Heritage Highlights Known for its Roman ancestors Lincoln, or lindum, is home to over 1,000 years of history.

L

incoln was once one of the largest settlements in England, and benefitted from its raised position high upon the hill. Wool and coins were traded via the waterways and buildings that are still standing today tell the fascinating tales of Kings, Castles, Conquerors and Battles throughout the ages. Built by William the Conqueror in 1068, Lincoln Castle, a stronghold along major routes of Ermine (York to London) and Fosse (Lincoln to Leicester) provided a strategic position for the Romans. Today Lincoln Castle is home to one of only

four original 1215 Magna Carta, an original Victorian Prison, full 360˚ wall walks and interactive displays of Lincolnshire artifacts. One of the finest Gothic buildings in Europe and once the tallest building in the world, Lincoln Cathedral is a must see experience for anyone visiting Lincolnshire. Roof, Tower and Floor tours give a fascinating insight into the history of the building, led by expert guides. The Medieval Wren Library houses some of the world’s rarest documents including the first known written verse thought to be referring to Robin Hood.

KIDS KNOW BEST What some of our minivisitors thought about their trip to Lincoln….

Check out Lincoln Mums for a great range of classes and activities for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers.

I like going to the Cathedral because it’s so big and you can try and find the imp, an angel froze it!

Hull City of Culture

Frequency Festival of Digital Art

A 365 day programme of cultural events and creativity inspired by the city of Hull, told to the world. Divided into four seasons, this national event hosted in Hull, draws on the distinctive spirit of the city and the artists, writers, directors, musicians, revolutionaries and thinkers that have made such a significant contribution to the development of art and ideas.

Virtual realities blur with medieval streets when Lincoln’s biennial festival of digital culture returns for its fourth edition - ten days of extraordinary installations and events. Frequency Festival will explore the theme of ‘disPLACEment’ (Place and Displacement) in 2017 as part of the celebrations of the 800th anniversary of the Charter of the Forest.

incolnshire, known as Bomber County, has a rich and varied aviation heritage, attractions across the county commemorating the past, present and future. Journey through the ages with a self-guided aviation tour. Learn of Lincolns involvement in the UK's WWI aviation manufacturing industry when over 3500 aircraft were produced - and how Lincoln is the birthplace of the tank. The Aviation Heritage Centre at RAF Cranwell (one of the very first Military Air Academies) has interactive exhibits including a flight simulator, story boards and digital displays. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, based at RAF Coningsby offers you the chance to see flight technicians working to maintain these iconic aircrafts and see the Lancaster Bomber “Just Jane” taxi along the runway. FOODIES Lincolnshire is one of the largest food producing counties in the UK – and the local “Yellow-Bellies” love great food.

F

amily run bistros, quintessentially British pubs, big name chains and celebrity chefs mean you will be spoilt for choice when dining in Lincoln. Lincolnshire specialities are often top of the list for our local chefs – you might find tangy Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese, succulent Lincolnshire Sausages, rich Lincolnshire Red Beef or fruity Lincolnshire Plum Bread on the menu.

Many restaurants and food venues are award winners, The Green Room at The Lincoln Hotel is Rosette quality, Burton Road Chippy was awarded 5* at the National Fish & Chip Awards and newly opened Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse & Grill at The Doubletree by Hilton brings the celebrity twist. You can meet some of the local farmers and producers at the regular street markets and sample the fine produce that our region has to offer.

Well stocked farm shops across the county champion local produce, often reared or bred on site. Doddington Hall has a fantastic farm shop and restaurant, and Uncle Henry’s north of Lincoln is well known for its varieties of meat and vegetables straight from the on-site working farm. Events such as the Lincolnshire Show in June are a great opportunity to see the best of Lincolnshire agriculture and farming, from rare breeds to award winning herds. The Lincolnshire Food & Gift Fair in November celebrates local chefs, gifts and crafts plus the popular Lincolnshire Sausage Festival in October is a firm family favourite.
