Lincoln Christmas Market

Thursday 7 - Sunday 10 December

The first and still one of Europe’s best

Set against the stunning backdrop of the historic Cathedral quarter, Lincoln Christmas Market offers visitors an enchanting and atmospheric day out. For four days every December, the uphill area of the city is transformed into a beautiful festive wonderland. With more than 200 stalls selling everything from unique handmade gifts to traditional gluhwein, the event regularly attracts more than 250,000 visitors who put around £12m into the local economy. “And while lots of other places across the country host festive markets, Lincoln’s was the first traditional German-style event - and is still regarded by many to be the best,” said Principal Events and Culture Officer at the City of Lincoln Council Claire McDowall. The market was inspired by Lincoln’s friendship and twinning with the German town of Neustadt and began after a group of City of Lincoln Councillors visited the town in the 1980s. The inaugural market was held here in 1982 and consisted of just 14 stalls. Since then it has grown into a “must-do” event and is seen as the perfect opportunity for locals and visitors from far and wide to embrace the festive spirit by strolling along the cobbles and taking in the sights and sounds in the medieval square between the impressive Norman castle and magnificent Gothic cathedral. “Even today, the German link remains strong, with stallholders from Neustadt bringing crafts, food and drink to the event - a perfect gift if you want something a bit different,” said Claire. “For many, the Christmas Market is the most important event in the city’s calendar as it brings so many people to Lincoln. These visitors often return at other times in the year when they realise all the city has to offer.” Thursday is traditionally ‘locals day’ at the market. It opens around midday once everything is set up and is usually the quietest of the four days to head along. Castle Hill is traditionally the first point of call for visitors. Most people get into the spirit of things with a mulled wine from one of the many stalls offering the spiced drink here. From there you can follow the taking in the stalls inside the old buildings and the fairground rides along Westgate, including the popular Big Wheel.

Lincoln Performing Arts Centre

Lincoln Performing Arts Centre presents two stunning shows for a magical Christmas A visit to Lincoln Performing Arts Centre is sure to be high on your list of festive things to do this Christmas. This year they are presenting two stunning family shows. If you’re looking for a full-on theatrical experience then book now for The Adventures of Robin Hood and Maid Marian: Winter in Sherwood. It is winter in Sherwood and snow covers the greenwood. It’s a time of magic and adventure. The boy-king Henry III rules an England in civil war and the Sheriff of Nottingham who sees a chance to seize control. The people need a hero but who will step forward and fight for them? Join Robin Hood and Maid Marian on this rip-roaring quest suitable for families and children aged six up. What really sets this Christmas show apart - aside from it being a refreshing alternative to the numerous seasonal Pantomimes on offer in the city – is that the auditorium is transformed to create an immersive world, where the audience can imagine they’ve stepped into the Sherwood Forest of legend! In addition to the big family show in the main auditorium Lincoln Performing Arts Centre is also producing The Winter Whale, a professional studio Christmas show for younger audiences. This is a theatrical experience unlike any other on offer in Lincoln this Christmas and follows on from the success of last year’s sell-out show Brrr! The Lost Polar Bear. The Winter Whale tells the story of a little girl and boy lost at sea. The two friends find themselves cast adrift on an epic journey. Through rolling waves and frozen seas the children search for the magical Winter Whale to help guide them safely home. Charming characters and imaginative storytelling combine to make this a perfect show for young children, especially if this is their first experience of theatre. Robin Hood and Maid Marian runs from Monday 11 to Sunday 24 December, and the Winter Whale runs Friday 15 right through to Sunday 31 December. Advanced booking is highly recommended. Lincoln Drill Hall

Lincoln Drill Hall - make The Arts part of your life Here at Lincoln Drill Hall we’re committed to bringing the arts and people together. The arts enrich and transform lives and should be accessible to all, regardless of age, background or circumstance – this is what drives us as a team and a charity.

Our logo carries the words ‘changing lives, changing place, changing perceptions’. Since 2004 the Drill Hall has been committed to making a positive difference in those three areas. Each year we programme over 800 events and welcome 100,000 visitors. Through this activity we change lives, for example, 1100 people with disabilities attend our Butterfly Club events each year. We change place – of those surveyed, 90 per cent say that the Drill Hall enhances the city’s sense of community. And we change perceptions: ‘This show opened my eyes… and also taught me so much.’

become known for, including great acts like Phill Jupitus, Jason Byrne, Russell Watson and The Red Hot Chilli Pipers and incredible shows such as Sherlock Holmes and The Crimson Cobbles and, hot from the West End, The Hunting of the Snark. And this Christmas we celebrate ten years of panto at the Drill Hall with a spectacular production of Jack and The Beanstalk.

Our year-round programme of events includes everything from theatre to dance, live music to stand-up comedy, talks and films to a wide range of family events. We also offer a wide range of participation opportunities, including Fishtank Youth Theatre groups, Happy Mondays and Hartbeeps for toddlers, Dreamland Drama for adults with disabilities, Full Bloom dance classes and life-drawing workshops.

As a charity, we also need your support. Every penny we receive goes towards making the Drill Hall the best it possibly can be and able to offer more opportunities for people of all ages. Every donation, no matter how small, makes a big difference to us, so please visit www.lincolndrillhall.com/support-us to see how you can help.

University of Lincoln

University puts Lincoln on global map for education

The University of Lincoln attracts thousands of students to the city from all over the world each year – helping to put Lincoln squarely on the global map not just as a place to visit but as a place to live, learn and work. Last year marked 20 years since Her Majesty The Queen officially opened the main Brayford Pool Campus and since then more than £300million has been invested in the award-winning city centre campus, helping transform what was once a brownfield site into the bustling, cosmopolitan waterfront area the Brayford is today. With around 15,000 students from more than 100 different countries the University of Lincoln is now a TEF Gold rated university in recognition of its excellent teaching, student support and graduate prospects. This September students took their first teaching sessions in two high profile new additions to campus – the £28m Isaac Newton Building and the £19m Sarah Swift Building. These state-of-the-art buildings provide new facilities for current and future generations of engineers, computer programmers, mathematicians, psychologists, nurses and social workers. Both buildings take their names from illustrious figures from Lincolnshire’s past. Sir Isaac Newton - widely considered the greatest scientific thinker of all time- lived at Woolsthorpe Manor near Grantham. Dame Sarah Swift, founder of the Royal College of Nursing, came from

Kirton Skeldyke, near Boston. This fusion of historic and modern, local and international, reflects the University’s role as a 21st century civic university located in one of the world’s finest small, historic cities. The University champions Lincoln’s proud heritage by supporting big calendar events such as this year’s 800th anniversary of the Charter of the Forest and the interactive Knights Trail. It also adds to the city’s buoyant arts offering with a varied programme of live music, stand-up comedy and theatre at the Engine Shed and LPAC venues. There are many free-to-attend public events on campus too, including the University’s Great Lives guest lecture series, which features inspirational talks by high profile figures from a variety of different professions and specialisms. Recent speakers have included naturalist and TV presenter Chris Packham (pictured above), Speaker of the House John Bercow, and crime writer Ann Cleeves. Comedian Stewart Lee and BBC Countryfile presenter Tom Heap are among the big names confirmed on the bill for the 2017/18 series so far. Christmas in Lincoln

Enjoy a cracking family Christmas all over the city Families who adore Christmas are promised a very merry yuletide season in Lincoln with many fantastic festive events. Lincoln BIG is introducing a new attraction to the city - THOR’s Tipi - open daily on the Cornhill from November 14 from 10.30am to December 31 (closed Christmas Day). The fun family bar is formed of two linked canvas tipis and decked out with wooden tables and benches, cosy furs and a fire pit. It will serve a wide selection of drinks, food and hot chocolate specials. On Friday, November 17 the city flicks the switches on three Christmas Festive light ceremonies with St Mark’s Shopping Centre at 6.15pm, followed by Lincoln’s main Switch-On ceremony in front of the High Street War Memorial at 6.45pm and The Waterside Shopping Centre adding to the festive glow at 7.15pm. “This the first time the event has been held on a Friday to cater for families with school-age youngsters and City Square will be turned into a winter wonderland with children’s rides, singing princesses as well as food and drink stalls, said Lincoln BIG chief executive Matt Corrigan. A giant screen is also being set up, which will capture the magic of the High Street switch-on ceremony - beaming it across City Square. On Thursday, November 23, Lincoln BIG will welcome reindeer from the Cairngorms to St Marks Shopping Centre from 2pm and 4pm where families can have their photographs taken. Then the Reindeer Parade will

27

leave St Marks at 6pm and pull Santa in his sleigh to City Square. Businesses city-wide will be celebrating the spirit of Christmas by decorating their premises with glittering trees, seasonal greenery and flags, as part of Lincoln BIG’s street-dressing scheme. The build-up to the big day gathers momentum with the four-day Lincoln Christmas Market, from Thursday, December 7 to Sunday 10 (see page 6), which will be complemented by ‘late late’ night shopping culminating in a week late opening from Monday, December 18 to Saturday 23. Schoolchildren, families and community groups will be adding their own special touch to the city’s streets, on Thursday, December 14, by carrying brightly coloured stars and lights in the Lincoln BIG Lantern Parade. This year the route is being reversed. After enjoying a carol service in Castle Hill, the parade will make its way downhill to City Square to be entertained by a fantastic light show. Investing £30m in Transpo

Lincoln Transport Hub

Lincoln’s impressive Transport Hub development will play a key part in the city’s continued renaissance and promises to create an attractive and welcoming gateway to the city for residents, visiting shoppers and tourists alike. The £30 million development - which includes a state-of-the-art bus station, 1,000 space multi-storey car park and an attractive pedestrian plaza, linking both to the improved railway station. This will help revitalise that area of the city centre, and the multi-million transformation underway in The Cornhill Quarter. “Amazingly, seven million people used the city bus station last year. Now they can look forward to being among the first to make the most of lighter, brighter, upto-date facilities when arriving or leaving the city,” said

Images include recent pictures of the work being carried out on Lincoln’s new Transport Hub with an artist’s impression of the resulting facility. Top insert image opposite shows City of Lincoln Council Leader Cllr Ric Metcalfe (right) and Louis Feakes of Wilmott Dixon on site earlier in the year. 32

The Transport Hub has been developed by City of Lincoln Council in partnership with The Department of Transport, Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, Lincolnshire Co-op and Network Rail, working with East Midlands Trains and Lincolnshire County Council. St Marks Shopping Centre

It’s personal at St Marks

Where can you find a personal shopper, beauty makeover sessions, spa treatments, suit hire, a 3D printer, product demonstrations, pamper evenings, mummy-to-be days and more? St Marks – that’s where. Clarins within Debenhams caters for onsite skin-spa beauty therapies – a perfect gift for that special someone this Christmas with prices from £35-£70. Debenhams also offer personal shopping for special occasions including that Christmas party outfit. If you’re a bride to be in 2018 or looking for a last minute holiday wardrobe the St Marks store has everything you’ll need. Best of all, it’s free - all you need to do is book. A selection of stores offer free services to parents to be including personal shopping in both Mamas & Papas and Toys R Us with Babies R Us, just book in-store. Toys R Us also offer a Lay-away Service, which allows you to fill your trolley with absolutely everything in-store and you pay 20 per cent of the total at the checkout. The goods are set aside and can be picked up when the outstanding amount is paid after four, eight, or 12 weeks. Kids are also covered with retailers such as Argos, The Entertainer, The Works, Mamas & Papas, Mothercare and Toys R Us so you can tick everything off the Christmas List in one visit if you’re lucky. Toys that are already being touted as a ‘must have’ this Christmas are: Luvabella Dolls; Hatchimals; LEGO Ninjago; Tiny Treasure Baby Dolls;

Lightning McQueen car and Teach and Tag Movi from Fisher-Price. Members of the St Marks team do not just pride themselves on a great shopping experience, but are always looking for opportunities to ‘give back’ to the community through charitable events and onsite activities. The centre has worked closely with Macmillan over the past three years with regular events such as the Gravity Box, bake sales and Get Fit, Get Active. The annual Macmillan Tree Of Lights event in St Marks’ Garden has grown each year and is a real Christmas favourite. Other charitable events include Debenhams raising over £2,000 for Help For Heroes in 2017 and raising awareness of local charities such as LIVES and the Air Ambulance with live demonstrations onsite. Last December St Marks in association with Costa collected over £600 worth of toys, which were donated to the Salvation Army and the children’s wards at Lincoln County Hospital. There will be a similar scheme running this year.

Waterside Shopping Centre

So many reasons to visit the Waterside For shoppers who want to get Christmas all wrapped up as quickly and easily as possible the Waterside Centre is the place to go. Lincolnshire’s only H&M is there, as are Next, Topshop, New Look, Roman and Office, so you can find the perfect festive outfit for you or a loved one. Stormfront, Lincoln’s specialist Apple retailer, is complemented by Virgin Media, Mobile Bitz, O2 and Three - perfect for picking up a present for the techy lover in your life. The Body Shop and Superdrug have everything you need to unwind with and The Fragrance Shop will have the perfect perfume or aftershave for you. Smiggle and Claire’s are the places to go if you want to put a big grin on little faces. And if you’re looking for something really special, then a trip to Goldsmith’s or the Watch Clinic won’t disappoint. If you’re partying over the festive season, don’t forget to treat your nails at Beaute Lounge and if you need some new spectacles to go with your new outfit, then pay Vision Express a visit. With everything you need under one roof, including some delicious festive fare at Caffe Italiano and Burger King, you could complete your Christmas shopping in just one visit. The centre’s Christmas Lights Switch On takes place on Friday,

November 17 (see page 27) with a Christmas Market the following Saturday with hand crafted and homemade gifts. And if you visit the centre December 9-10 the Jon Eggin Trust Carol Singers will be performing. Lincoln Castle Shop

Unique gifts have echoes of the past Shoppers looking for unique gifts should pay a visit to Lincoln Castle Shop. From a Christmas tipple to high end jewellery or from medieval knight statues to stocking fillers for children the shop really can offer something for all ages - there is even a lifesize suit of armour. Manager Amanda Andrews said the decorative theme for this year’s festive season will be Arts and Crafts, but that the stock will cover many more genres and eras. “The theme will be all purples and blues with William Morris prints on paper products, such as journals, and tapestries, but there will be many other products that reflect the castle and its history.” With the Battle of Lincoln 1217 a focus of many of this year’s summer activities the shop will be stocking the popular Paint Your Own Knights as well as Magna Carta inspired items. Men in armour also feature on some of the Castle Shop’s many food and drink gifts - many of which originate in Lincolnshire. Knights Nectar mead can be found alongside Limebay Christmas Mead and the new Sipsmith Gin tree decorations (see below) exclusive to the Castle Shop “As a nation, we’ve been decorating evergreen trees in the festive period for hundreds of years, with the decorated branches acting as a reminder that spring is on its way. At the Sipsmith Distillery the festive period just wouldn’t be the same without a little gin sipping on the side. So, we thought we thought it only right to bring the two traditions together in one beautiful box, ” said Master Distiller of Sipsmith, Jared Brown Other gifts include jewellery from Lincoln goldsmiths and silversmiths, Tarvier, as well as a gift range inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

Bangers bring in the crowds Lincoln Sausage Festival

By Jane Tomlinson, Redhill Farm Free Range Pork Ltd

The annual Lincoln Sausage Festival on Saturday 14 October is celebrating its fifteenth year. Now firmly established as the UK’s biggest Sausage Festival it was the brainchild of Mark Brewer, Founder member of Rotary Club of Lincoln Colonia, in 2002 to set up a fun, community event to celebrate our County’s famous Lincolnshire Sausage Starting with just six stalls in the Castle Square all those years ago, it has grown to full capacity of 60 stallholders inside the Castle Grounds and filling the Castle Square to attract over 12,000 visitors. Along with Lincolnshire Sausages there are many other varieties from producers of pork, beef, lamb and local venison. There is plenty of other produce to taste and buy from local cheese producers, artisan bakers and much more from Lincolnshire and further afield. Other attractions for the whole family include cookery demonstrations from Lincolnshire chef Rachel Green using as much Lincolnshire produce from the stallholders as she can, and managing to entertain, inform and create fabulous tasting dishes all at the same time. Founder stallholders and local farmers, Redhill Farm sponsor a Childrens’ Marquee to provide a variety of free entertainment for young children on the day – including Circus skills, clown’s entertainment and face painting. Children can also have a go at sausage making with Lincoln butcher and

Hazel and Terry Tomlinson of Redhill Farm enjoy a previous Sausage Festival

Rotary member, Neil Curtis, with his demonstrations throughout the day. There will be entertainment from colourful band Cosmic Sausages and look out for the famous Mr. Sausage in costume mingling with the crowd, he once appeared on BBC TV’s ‘Have I got news for you?”. Any money raised by the Rotary Club goes to their ‘Kids Out” Charity which takes special needs schoolchildren for a fun day out. “I just love this event” said Mark, who was recently awarded the Paul Harris Fellow for his outstanding services to the Rotary. “It involves a huge amount of planning and organisation and needs the help of 30 volunteers - many are family and friends to Rotary members but it’s well worth all the hard work, a very enjoyable day, but behind the scenes a day that really supports the local community.” Lincoln Sausage Festival runs from 9am in the Castle Square

and the doors open for Lincoln Castle 10am - 4pm.

Set aside a small handful of brownie crumbs for the top of the puds, then divide the brownies between the bases of 6 serving glasses. Melt the milk chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan halffilled with barely simmering water. Don’t let the water touch the base of the bowl or the chocolate will overcook. Alternatively, microwave on high for 1-2 minutes. Stir the custard into the bowl of melted chocolate until well combined, then divide the chocolate custard between the serving glasses and chill. Place the white chocolate and 3 tbsp of double cream in a heatproof bowl and melt as before, stirring once or twice. Remove from the heat as soon as the chocolate has melted and leave to cool. Whisk the remaining double cream until it forms soft peaks. Beat a few spoonfuls into the white chocolate to loosen it up, then fold in the rest. Divide the white chocolate cream between the serving glasses and then scatter the reserved brownie crumbs over the top. Spoon over the sauce of your choice and serve, or chill for up to 3 hours.
