Have summer fun in city parks

Lincoln’s Parks and Open Spaces

THE sun is out, the snow is a distant memory, flowers are blooming and the birds are singing which can only mean that spring is here in Lincoln.

In 2003, the park completed a £3 million restoration to return it back to its original beauty (see above) Today the Arboretum boasts beautiful gardens, lakes, bridges, a maze, two fountain features, a Victorian bandstand, children’s play area and a café for the family to enjoy. The Arboretum is the closest of Lincoln’s parks to the city centre at under a 20minute walk to the gates. Pay and display parking facilities are also available for public use on the weekends on Sewell Road. The Arboretum is owned and managed by City of Lincoln Council.

With three beautiful parks in the city, you’re spoiled for choice on where to enjoy your walk in nature, but rest assured, we’ve got all the details so you can make the right choice for your day out. Boultham Park - Hall Drive, Lincoln LN6 7SW The 50-acre Boultham Park is nearing completion of its multi-million pound restoration and a short walk around the park uncovers a whole range of new features. Not only does the park boast an improved look and feel, but a brand-new café (below) and education centre have been installed and a full restoration has been carried out on the fountain garden, bandstand, sundial and bridges. Visitors can still wind along the traditional paths and enjoy the park’s favourite features such as the lake and children’s play area. The improvements at Boultham Park were made possible by The Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Parks for People Project. The Boultham Park Restoration Project is run by City of Lincoln Council and Linkage Community Trust. Hartsholme Country Park - Skellingthorpe Road, Lincoln LN6 0EY If you’re looking to visit a park away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Green Flag Award winning Hartsholme Country Park is the ideal spot for you. The park offers something for everyone, whether it’s fun for the children in the play area, a bite to eat in the café or a gentle stroll around the lake with your loved ones. The park boasts many natural features including landscaped gardens, a large reservoir, woodlands and grassland, as well as 80 different species of tree. What’s more, the 63-acre Swanholme Lakes Local Nature Reserve is accessible through the park and hosts a range of wildlife. Follow the park at: facebook.com/hartsholmecp to find out about the many events that the City of Lincoln park rangers host throughout the year (see also under our Families Listings). Hartsholme Country Park is signposted from the A46 Lincoln bypass and Tritton Road, with the entrance and car park located on the B1378 (Skellingthorpe Road). Arboretum - Monks Road, Lincoln LN2 5RT The Arboretum is a Grade II listed and Green Flag Award winning park near the city centre.

Lincoln Transport Hub

Hub is welcoming gateway to city

LAST year, the city bagged itself a new 1,000 space car park and this year, it’s got a brand-new bus station to shout about! The opening of Lincoln Central Bus Station marks the completion of City of Lincoln Council’s £30 million Transport Hub project, offering visitors a warm welcome to the city by providing modern facilities for all. The Transport Hub development compromises of the new car park, bus station, improvements to the railway station forecourt, a new access for vehicles into the railway station car park and a pedestrian plaza linking Sincil Street and High Street to the city’s railway station. Lincoln Central Car Park officially opened its doors in November 2017 to coincide with the city’s Christmas lights switch on. The building provides a safe environment for users with plenty of convenient parking for visitors and 12 EV charging points for electric vehicles. Next door, Lincoln Central Bus Station welcomed its first passengers in January 2018 to offer a much-improved experience for visitors to the city. The light and spacious concourse provides up-to-the-minute travel information and Lincoln’s first Changing Places facility is available for less able visitors to use. Lincoln Central Bus Station and Car Park were built for City of Lincoln Council by Willmott Dixon Construction, and part-funded by a £12 million grant from the Department for Transport and the Greater Lincolnshire Economic Partnership.

Lincoln Drill Hall - make The Arts part of your life

Lincoln Drill Hall

HERE at Lincoln Drill Hall we’re committed to bringing the arts and people together. The arts enrich and transform lives and should be accessible to all, regardless of age, background or circumstance - this is what drives us as a team and a charity. Our logo carries the words ‘changing lives, changing place, changing perceptions’. Since 2004 we’ve been committed to making a positive difference in those three areas. Each year we programme over 800 events and welcome 100,000 visitors. Through this activity we change lives, for example, 1100 people with disabilities attend our Butterfly Club events each year. We change place - of those surveyed, 90% say that the Drill Hall enhances the city’s sense of community. And we change perceptions: ‘This show opened my eyes and taught me so much.’ (pictured). All this plus Lincoln Beer Festival, Gin Festival, Blues Festival, Northern Soul All-Dayer and much more.

Our year-round programme of events includes everything from theatre to dance, live music to stand-up comedy, talks and films to a wide range of family events. We also offer a wide range of participation opportunities, including our Fishtank Youth Theatre groups, Happy Mondays and Hartbeeps creative play sessions for toddlers, Dreamland Drama for adults with disabilities, Full Bloom dance classes and life-drawing workshops.

At the heart of all of the above are amazing stories, songs, people and experiences - so join us this year and make the arts a part of your life! As a charity, we also need your support. Every penny we receive goes towards making the Drill Hall the best it possibly can be and able to offer more opportunities for people of all ages. Every donation, no matter how small, makes a big difference to us, so please visit www.lincolndrillhall.com/support-us to see how you can help.

This Spring and Summer is packed with the incredible range of events we’ve become known for, including great acts like Kevin Bridges, Barbara Dickson, Benjamin Zephaniah, Jess Robinson, Abba Mania and King Pleasure & the Biscuit Boys and top shows such as Crimes Under the Sun, Northern Ballet’s The Ugly Duckling, a stunning production of Les Misérables and the brand new outdoor show by circus theatre company Ockham’s Razor, Belly of the Whale.

Food & Drink

An easy way to Love Local Food and Drink/Recipes

Food & Drink

BUYING local products makes sense in so many ways. It’s good for the environment as it reduces food miles and your support for these smaller, craft producers helps boost our local economy. Even better, it doesn’t need to be hard work. You don’t have to do any research, track down producers or source a variety of ingredients from across the county. Just pay a visit to your local Lincolnshire Co-op food store.

There’s a wealth of quality goods from our region in the Love Local range and you can discover everything from beer, bread and biscuits to chutneys, cheese and crisps. Lots of the ingredients can save you graft in the kitchen too - they’re store cupboard and fridge essentials that can liven up every day dishes. Mr Huda’s curry paste, which is made in Scunthorpe by former restauranteur Maf Huda (pictured above), is a must-have. He’s done all the preparation for you, so no need to grind spices or get hold of fresh herbs. Mix up the paste with some yoghurt for a quick marinade for chicken, use the handy recipe on the back of the pack for a tasty curry or go veggie with our sweet potato and lentil dish (see bottom of page 30). A distinctive cheese can add another dimension to a speedy pasta supper or make an easy omelette more of a treat. Try full-flavoured Lincolnshire Poacher, made by the Jones brothers on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds(Simon is pictured left), nutty Cote Hill Red, crafted by the Davenports on their farm near Market Rasen or creamy Just Jane cheddar, which comes from Lymn Bank Farm near Skegness. Our naan pizza (see top of page 30) can be ready to cook in just five minutes and uses any cheese, pasta sauce and toppings you have to hand. Quick, delicious and doing some good - that’s our kind of fast food! Friday 25 May 7pm

Gainsborough Old Hall

Iconic movie and TV costumes in Old Hall exhibition EXCLUSIVE to Gainsborough Old Hall this year Historical Hall of Fame is a selection of iconic costumes from historical films and television.

The costumes displayed are from popular programmes and films such as Shakespeare in Love, Elizabeth and Henry V. These will be the actual costumes as worn by the lead actors Judi Dench, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kenneth Brannagh. Also among the 12 costumes on display from March 30 - September 2 will be Helena Bonham Carter’s costume from Suffragette, which reflects the centenary of Votes for Women this year. Other costumes include uniforms worn by Aiden Turner in Poldark and Sean Bean in Sharpe, and the uniform costume worn by Kirstin Scott Thomas from Darkest Hour. Covering a span of time from the 15th Century to the 20th Century these costumes bring to life those films of epic moments of British history both fact and fiction - but all have authenticity in common. Gainsborough Old Hall provides a beautiful and historic backdrop for these costumes, having witnessed each of the periods in history represented by the costumes on display; and the exhibition is sure to be a highlight of a visit to one of the greatest medieval great Halls in the country. Throughout the display duration will be a series of special events inspired by the costumes. Exhibition highlights include; Fashion from the Past - Friday 30 March 30 - Monday 2 April; King & Queen for the Day Children’s Dressing up for Half Term Saturday 26 May - Sun 3 June; Join Sharpe’s Rifles on Sunday 17 June; Meet Queen Victoria and her Butler on Thursday 26 July and Meet Elizabeth’s Executioner over the weekend of Saturday 25 Monday 27 August. For more details see under the Old Hall’s listings in our Heritage Section.

Bishop Grosseteste University

Learning at heart of the community FOR more than 150 years Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) has been an integral part of the Lincoln community. Deep in the heart of this historic city, just a few minutes’ walk from the Castle and Cathedral, it has evolved from its humble roots as an Anglican teacher training college into a TEF Gold rated institution, and the top university in the East Midlands for widening participation. Beginning life in 1862 as a teacher training college for women, it was renamed Bishop Grosseteste College (in honour of Robert Grosseteste the thirteenth century scientist, philosopher, educator, and Bishop of Lincoln) to mark its centenary in 1962. Over the years it has continued to grow, and now, as Bishop Grosseteste University, it educates over 2,000 students in subjects ranging from drama to psychology from foundation degree level to PhD, and much more in between. Though much at Bishop Grosseteste University has changed in the course of this progression, its commitment to providing first-class education and turning out graduates of the highest calibre who go out into the world to change people’s lives

for the better has never wavered. From top-of-the-line teaching and study facilities, to an on-site cinema, BGU has worked hard to ensure that the beautiful and peaceful campus has everything a student could need to succeed. More importantly, at the heart of all these services, BGU boasts a team of educators and staff dedicated to advancement of their students through academic, professional and emotional support whenever and wherever it might be required. Widely recognised for its consistently high employability and student satisfaction rates, Bishop Grosseteste University is committed to being a leader in learning, to inspire excellence, innovation and to enrich the lives of its students, staff and the communities it serves. You can experience everything Bishop Grosseteste University has to offer, and see why students rate it so highly, at an upcoming Open Day. All dates and information can be found at www.bishopg.ac.uk/opendays or simply contact the Enquiries Team at enquiries@bishopg.ac.uk to discuss what Bishop Grosseteste University has in store for you. University at the heart of city life

University of Lincoln

ONE of the world’s great small cities, Lincoln is a melting pot of history and modern living, from the spectacular Lincoln Cathedral to the buzzing Brayford waterfront, which is home to the University of Lincoln’s inspiring campus.

Lives series. And in October TV presenter and naturalist Chris Packham, a Visiting Professor at the University of Lincoln, will explore the wild side of Halloween in a public talk. These popular events are completely free to attend although prior booking is essential (see below). The campus is also home to The Engine Shed, the largest live music and entertainments venue in Lincoln, and the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre.

With a fusion of state-of-the-art academic facilities and thoughtfully renovated historic buildings, the University has won a string of awards for its campus investments. Just last year two major new buildings named after two of Lincolnshire’s most famous sons and daughters - the Sarah Swift Building and the Isaac Newton Building - were opened along with new waterfront accommodation for students.

Whether you are interested in viewing the modern architecture, enjoying a drink and bite to eat in one of the many cafes and eating spots around campus, or taking in a show, the University of Lincoln will be happy to welcome you to its campus.

The campus’s welcoming environment is peppered with cafes and eateries. Visitors can enjoy a stroll along the Brayford Pool, and take in views of the waterfront, castle and cathedral, and meet the local waterfowl which waddle along the pathways snaking through the waterside campus. The friendly campus is open to the public all year round - and there is plenty to make a visit to campus worthwhile.

Brayford Pool

An eye on the Brayford Pool

LINCOLN’S striking Brayford Pool is not only recognised as England’s oldest inland harbour, but it’s also one of the city’s best loved attractions. Over the past two decades it has grown into an area which is central to the city’s prosperity with great bars and restaurants lining the beautiful water’s edge. And, whether you’re looking for a romantic dinner for two or a drink with your old friends in the spring sunshine, the Brayford is well known as a favourite destination for visitors to Lincoln. The range of restaurants on offer is extensive, with well-known Italian chains such as Prezzo, Ask Italian and Zizzi on the waterfront amongst the likes of Harvester, Handmade Burger Co and Nando’s and, on the water itself, Wagamama. To align with its charming qualities, the area also hosts some of the city’s top drinking spots such as the Royal William IV which features seats out in the sun next to the water for ultimate relaxation. A few doors down, the Square Sail is a venue to suit every budget whilst the Doubletree by Hilton serves elegance through a host of desirable cocktails and its delightful waterfront balcony.

The city’s Odeon cinema is situated on the waterfront and screens the latest in blockbuster films, with a Costa Coffee and Ben and Jerry’s to dish up your favourite treats before the film begins. Add to these the recent renovation and development at One the Brayford, creating one of the city’s premium addresses. The area is also home to some of the city’s best accommodation with the Doubletree by Hilton and Holiday Inn on the Brayford offering some of the best views that the city has to offer. However, not all the fun takes place on the waterside, with the Brayford Belle operating boat trips on the water itself from Easter to October, offering exceptional scenes of the city on its journey.

A selection of events take place on the waterfront each year, with 2018 events including Lincoln BIG Mini Day on 15 April, Classic Car Rally on 22 April and Bike Fest on 10 June.

Steampunk - Weekend at the Asylum

IBCC opens in centenary year

International Bomber Command Centre

IT’S fitting that in the year the Royal Air Force celebrates its 100th anniversary the ambitious project to build the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln has come to fruition. After six years of planning and construction it opened to the public on January 30 and the official open ceremony has been planned for Thursday April 12 when thousands of veterans are expected to visit the city to visit the centre that commemorates their fallen comrades and educates visitors. IBCC chef executive Nicky Barr, her staff , a huge team of volunteers and a whole host of partners have made the Canwick Avenue centre a possibility. Funding has come from private donations and grants including the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the Chancellor’s LIBOR Fund, Biffa Awards, Wren FCC Environment, Garfield Weston and the Foyle Foundation. “The centre provides the public face for a wide scale and international project, which has been supported by organisations, institutions and individuals from across the world and includes the Chadwick Centre, the Memorial Spire, the International Peace Garden and the Bomber Command Digital Archive.,” said Nicky. National Lottery money has also enabled the project to work in partnership with the University of Lincoln to create a free to access digital archive which records the first-hand testimonies of those involved and preserves documents and photos, from private sources. Once live on the web site, this archive will provide one of the most comprehensive free resources on the work of the Command. “So far, the Archive Team, supported by volunteers from nine countries, has preserved over 180,000 documents and photographs and has recorded 800 oral testimonies. These have been used to ensure that the exhibition at the IBCC relates the human story of this contentious period of history.” The website already carries the names and details of nearly 58,000 men and women who perished in the service of the Command, these names appear on the walls at the Memorial providing the only place in the world where every loss is memorialised. The work to create the database has taken four years and the dedication of a team of over 100 volunteers. Education lies at the heart of the IBCC’s mission statement and the Team have already worked with over 800 school students, 270 adult education group members and hosted over 20,000 people on the site on free guided tours. The centre will be open Tuesday - Sunday from 9.30am to 5pm. To find out more please visit www.internationalbcc.co.uk
