Welcome from Lydia Rusling, Head of Visit Lincoln
Enjoy another great summer in Lincoln
surrounding areas after seeing our city and images of Lincoln Cathedral beamed across the globe thanks to F.A. Cup TV coverage. Visitors to the website will be able to find out what’s happening in the city and surrounding areas throughout the summer, and learn more about our historical connections to one of the least known, but decisive battles in English history. I hope you find this What’s On Guide helpful in planning an exciting summer in Lincoln. It would be great to see your favourite moments and photos over the summer, share them by using #LoveLincoln or tagging @VisitLincoln.
I’D like to thank Bailgate Independent for producing this What’s On Guide for summer. 2017 marks another significant year for the city with the 800th anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln and the sealing of Charter of the Forest. Visit Lincoln is delighted that so many businesses and organisations have decided to celebrate 2017 with us by hosting a cultural mix of events and putting to good use Visit Lincoln’s 2017 brand to join us all together. As you walk through the city over the summer look out for the new art trail featuring 36 decorated Knights. Glance up to see the colourful street bunting, experience medieval markets, re-enactments and festivals, as well as live performances across the city’s venues. Don’t miss Battles & Dynasties a special collection with exhibits from the National Archives, the British Library and the National Portrait Gallery (read more on page 26). Look out for the bonus Lincoln City Knight, which continues the excitement and local pride generated by this year’s success of our local football club. We’ve welcomed an increasing number of visitors worldwide to our website visitlincoln.com, with a significant number of new visitors wanting to know about Lincoln and

Lincoln Knights’ Trail
Follow the colourful Knights’ Trail TO arms! The colourful figures that will form the Lincoln Knights’ Trail are in position to play their part in commemorating the 800th anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln and the sealing of the Charter of the Forest in 1217. The 36 knights will be displayed as art installations at different locations across the city between May 20 - the actual anniversary of the battle - and September 3. Various businesses and organisations are represented by the knights including newly-promoted Lincoln City Football Club. Its red and white livery was designed by Lincoln artist Leah Goldberg and later signed by players and manager Danny Cowley. “As everyone knows, it’s been an amazing season and it will be great to have our knight on display on the city’s streets throughout the summer as a reminder of the team’s success,” said Danny (pictured above right). Lincoln Business Investment Group (Lincoln BIG) is the driving force behind the Lincoln Knight’s Trail with partner organisation Visit Lincoln and Wild In Art - a follow-up to the hugely successful Barons’ Trail in the 2015 Magna Carta celebrations. “We welcomed Lincoln City to get involved in the Knights’ Trail because the team has brought attention to the city through its amazing performances,” said Lincoln BIG chief executive Matt Corrigan.
The knight sponsored by Bishop Grosseteste University proved to be a big hit when it visited the campus (below). Knight and Day was designed by Kieron Reilly and Lynsey Brecknell and features Lincoln’s skyline and is pictured being admired by youngsters who attended the university’s Easter Sports programme – it can now be found near Newport Arch. St Barnabas Hospice decided to take part in the Lincoln Knights’ Trail as 2017 also marks the charity’s 35th birthday. Artist Lizzy Mason’s colourful design features Lincolnshire landmarks and familiar sights with the county’s flag tying it all together. Lizzy is pictured above (left) with St Barnabas trustee Paul Banton and Veronica McBain, head of fundraising and marketing.
The Lincolnshire Spirit and Loving Embrace Knight went on tour of St Barnabas’ facilities in Nettleham Road and Hawthorn Road as well as the fundraising shops on Birchwood, Wragby Road and The Forum, North Hykeham. At the end of September the knights will be auctioned with proceeds in aid of The Nomad Trust. Visit www.knightstrail.com

Lincoln BIG
The team with BIG ideas for Lincoln AMBITIOUS plans to make Lincoln one of the UK’s top tourist destinations are being supported by Lincoln Business Improvement Group (BIG). Lincoln BIG works closely in partnership with the city’s destination management organisation, Visit Lincoln, investing time and money into a lively programme of events designed to attract and entertain visitors and residents and boost the city’s economy. The not-for-profit company supports more than 800 businesses based in the city’s Business Improvement District (BID), which covers an area bordered by St Mark’s Shopping Centre (south), Newport Arch (north), Lincoln College (east) and the University of Lincoln (west). The BID is funded in three ways - by a levy on businesses in the area, grants and voluntary donations and its own trading activities. “We are at the heart of a range of initiatives that
aim to put Lincoln on the map as a great destination in which to live, work and study, and our profile as a top visitor destination is growing phenomenally,” said chief executive Matt Corrigan. “We are working hard to help traders to thrive and grow and to encourage more people to discover Lincoln and spend longer here, enjoying our superb shopping, historic attractions and fun family events. “Working in partnership with others, we have introduced a Park & Ride Scheme (operating from Nettleham Road - opposite Waitrose), a Walk & Ride bus and subsidised travel and parking deals. “Our own team of street wardens (including Lance Hodgins above left) are on a mission to help keep the streets bright, friendly and

welcoming. Levy payers get free membership of our Security Group and we have an awardwinning Evening Economy Manager who works closely with the city’s two PubWatch Groups - to ensure people enjoy a safe night out in Lincoln.” During Summer 2017 the city will be a blaze of colour, thanks to Lincoln BIG’s In Bloom scheme - which offers levy payers an easy way to decorate their premises with floral displays and flags. “These will complement the exciting Lincoln Knights’ Trail - an unmissable attraction featuring 36 sculptures. It will be in place from May 20 to September 3, in celebration of the 800th Anniversary of The Battle of Lincoln and the Sealing of the Charter of The Forest,” added Matt. www.lincolnbig.co.uk

New Theatre Royal Lincoln
Entertainment for all at the New Theatre Royal
IT’S been just over six months since the New Theatre Royal Lincoln opened under new management, putting this much-loved venue back firmly in the spotlight. It’s been great to be able to welcome so many people through the doors and regulars will have noticed a few changes going on. There’s now a second bar in the theatre’s Stalls Lounge. Not only does it look stunning, but we’re proud to have been able to give a new home to the beautiful counter that graced the Ruddocks’ store for so many years. As part of our commitment to being a theatre for all, we’re working on improving disabled access and we’ve begun the process towards achieving charitable trust status. We’re pleased to announce our new summer season brochure has arrived. There is something for everyone and every occasion. We’re also introducing new regular in-house events, such as Comedy Night at the Royal with amazing stand-ups - including Gary Delaney and Patrick Monahan, not to mention some great local support acts. We’re also thrilled to be the hosting venue for a variety of local dance schools, university and college students’ performances, private hires and we are a fully licensed wedding venue. On the subject of opportunities, we are holding open auditions in August for young dancers to perform in our end-of-year pantomime Aladdin and our 2018 Easter pantomime Alice in Wonderland. Keep a look out on our website and social media for dates.
Have you seen the newest addition to the New Theatre Royal family - our little Ruby Royal and her driver, Lester? Ruby and Lester will be out and about in Lincolnshire in the coming months, giving out flyers and brochures for all the fabulous up-coming shows in our varied programme. If you spot Ruby, make sure you get a quick selfie with her and tag us on social media with the hashtags #RubyRoyal #WeSupportNTR to enter our monthly competition to win two tickets to a performance. There is a selection of shows to choose from. See you at the New Theatre Royal Lincoln soon. natalie Hayes-cowley, operations director

SINCE 1890 Lincoln Drill Hall has been a key venue in the city, serving a myriad of functions from military training to a makeshift hospital, music venue to wrestling and roller discos. Following a major refurbishment, we re-opened in 2004 and have been providing the people of Lincoln with a vibrant, welcoming venue in which to experience a vast range of arts and entertainment ever since. We’re committed to ensuring that Lincoln continues to thrive as a city with culture at its heart. Since 2010 the Drill Hall has been operated by Lincoln Arts Trust, a registered charity. Our year-round programme of events includes theatre, dance, live music, stand-up comedy, talks, films, party nights, festivals and a fantastic range of family events, culminating each year with our annual pantomime that plays to over 14,000 people. This Christmas we celebrate ten years of panto at the Drill Hall with a spectacular production of Jack And The Beanstalk. Taking part in arts activity can contribute positively to health, wellbeing and personal development so we offer many opportunities to get involved. Lincoln Performing Arts Centre
Performing in the heart of the city
LINCOLN Performing Arts Centre sits at the heart of the city on the University of Lincoln campus. Home to over 300 performing arts students, the venue strives to bring arts to the local community of Lincoln. With everything from children’s shows to folk music, visitors will definitely find something to entertain them. The venue has an exciting and varied programme that allows everyone to get involved and watch some theatre this summer. Highlights of the season include the return of Ballet Cymru with their latest adaptation A Midsummer Night’s Dream. “The incredible award winning company are known for their innovative approach to ballet and ability to make their work relevant. This is an outstanding adaptation of Shakespeare’s timeless play that features breath-taking choreography danced by some of the finest dancers around,” said Lincoln Performing Arts Centre’s Alice Dale. Another highlight is the Olivier Award Nominee, The Tiger Who Came To Tea. “After a smash hit West End season, the tea-guzzling tiger is back on the road in this delightful family show; packed with oodles of magic, singa-long songs and clumsy chaos. It’s a stunning stage adaptation of the classic tale of teatime mayhem expect to be surprised.” For lovers of live music the world-renowned folk band Belshazzar’s Feast will be gracing the stage with their hilarious sense of humour as well as their impressive folk musicianship. “If you are busy this summer, the venue’s autumn and winter season will be on sale in June and will feature some incredible theatre, dance, music and comedy including our two Christmas shows, Robin Hood and Maid Marian: Winter in Sherwood and The Winter Whale,” added Alice. The fantastic pop-up in-the-round theatre Roundabout will be returning for POP OUT FESTIVAL from Thursday, September 28 to Sunday, October 1. “This festival of art outside the ordinary will be filled with new playwriting by Paines Plough fresh from Edinburgh Fringe, as well as a bunch of other exciting shows and activities.” Keep an eye out for the new season going on sale in June. Battles and Dynasties Exhibition
Unique opportunity to see iconic document in impressive exhibition
By Mary Powell, Tourism Manager Lincolnshire County Council
LINCOLN is gaining a reputation for its top rate summer exhibitions and they don’t come much bigger than 2017’s Battles and Dynasties. It has been put together to celebrate the 800th Anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln Fair - the least known decisive battle in English history. The exhibition will be held at The Collection in Lincoln. Patrick, Lord Cormack, chairman of the Historic Lincoln Trust, has been behind Battles and Dynasties and decided to take a broad historical look at how certain great battles had changed, or confirmed, the royal houses of England from the Norman Conquest onwards. In 1068 William the Conqueror, realising the strategic importance of Lincoln ordered the Castle to be built, followed four years later by the Cathedral. And it was William in 1085 who commissioned the most extensive survey of land and ownership ever conducted. It soon became known as Domesday Book. “The most outstanding of all the treasures we will be showing is Domesday Book. Never, in almost 950 years, has it been displayed anywhere in the provinces. Domesday Book is, in effect, the birth certificate of Norman England, a detailed inventory of land and
landholdings throughout England produced in 1086. But the appearance of Domesday Book in Lincoln, a truly memorable landmark in our city’s and county’s history, should not detract from the interest and splendour of the other exhibits,” said Lord Cormack. How fitting that Domesday Book, rarely on display and never before shown outside London, should visit William’s castle at Lincoln between May 27 and September 3. It will join Magna Carta and Charter of the Forest in the David PJ Ross Magna Carta Vault a never to be repeated gathering of medieval England’s three most iconic documents. Visitors to The Collection, where the rest of the exhibition will be displayed, will be able to see the near contemporary illustrations of the Battle of Lincoln from the 13th century Matthew Paris Chronicle (above).
There will also be an illustration of the earlier Battle of Lincoln, that of 1141, when King Stephen was captured at the Castle. There will be the prayer book, which Richard III took to Bosworth Field and the personal book of devotions of Mary Tudor . “On a more sombre note visitors will be able to see the Bill of Attainder which led to the execution of Katherine Howard and the death warrant of Mary Queen of Scots. We shall be displaying the great illuminated Bible of Henry IV, Henry Bolingbroke, the only king to be born in Lincolnshire, and the will of Henry V,” explained Lord Cormack. “We shall also have the contemporary parliamentary account of the trial of Charles I in Westminster Hall and the Act of Settlement which brought to a close the constitutional upheavals of the 17th century and laid the foundations for the Hanoverian succession. And, from much more recent times, there will be the Instrument of Abdication of Edward VIII.” The exhibition will also include some royal portraits loaned by Her Majesty The Queen from the Royal Collection, including Van Dyck’s triple portrait of Charles I (above) and Hans Holbein’s drawings of Anne Boleyn (left) and John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester. “All three of our longest reigning Queens will be celebrated with painted portraits of Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, and photographs of Her Majesty The Queen, when Princess Elizabeth, featuring in the exhibition.” Other exhibits, including further outstanding royal portraits come from the National Archives, the British Library, the Lambeth Palace Library, the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, the Society of Antiquaries, Eton College and many other public and private collections in this country. We have been fortunate enough to secure, from the Pierpoint Morgan Library in the United States, manuscript life of the great William Marshal, one of the two heroes of the Battle of Lincoln written less than a decade after his death in 1219. We will also have his seal and that of the other hero of the Battle of Lincoln, Nicola de la Haye, Constable of the Castle. “All in all this will be a sumptuous and memorable feast of exhibits manuscripts, documents, portraits and even Queen Victoria’s throne. It has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of the David Ross Foundation, Investors in Lincoln, and a number of Lincolnshire companies and individuals. I would urge everyone in Lincolnshire to make an effort to come for these things will never be seen together again.” Tickets can be bought on www.thecollectionmuseum.com or by calling 01522 782040.

THE earliest surviving public record Domesday Book - is making a once-in-ageneration trip to Lincoln Castle as part of a major exhibition for 2017. William the Conqueror commissioned Domesday in 1085, 20 years after his successful invasion of Britain. The iconic document gave the king a picture of his realm by recording the taxable value and resources of all the boroughs and manors in England. Domesday will be on loan to Lincoln Castle from its permanent home at The National Archives in London. It will be on display in the David PJ Ross Magna Carta Vault from May 27 to September 3. It will be among local and national treasures showcased as part of Battles and Dynasties, an exhibition brought together by Lincolnshire County Council and the Historic Lincoln Trust.
27
“This is an unmissable chance for visitors to see the book within the grounds of a castle built by the same king that ordered it to be written. Following the investment in Lincoln Castle and The Collection, we’re lucky to have the state-ofthe-art conditions to display special items like this here in Lincoln,” said Lincolnshire County Council’s heritage spokesman Cllr Nick Worth. Lord Cormack, chairman of the Historic Lincoln Trust, added: “This will be a very special exhibition with major works of art and manuscripts which have never been seen together before. I am particularly thrilled that Domesday Book which is the single most important item in our national archive, and which records the Lincolnshire of 1086 in meticulous detail, will be on display in the David PJ Ross Magna Carta Vault.” Domesday Book will be part of the Lincoln Castle all-inclusive ticket, which also includes Magna Carta, the Medieval Wall Walk and the Victorian Prison, adults £13.50, concessions £11, child £7.20, families £34.20 (2 adults, up to 3 children). Live interpretation: crime and punishment Lincoln Castle’s Victorian Prison was designed for the 'separate system', an isolating regime that kept prisoners apart from the corrupting influence of their fellow prisoners. Men, women and children as young as eight were held here from 1848 to 1878 for crimes ranging from stealing a waistcoat and Bible, to highway robbery and murder. Explore the renovated prison with guides, films and live action events. Live events can be seen at weekends and during school holidays. Normal admission prices apply. Castle opening 10am - 5pm. 10. twilight tours Experience Lincoln Castle after hours through a monthly programme of exclusive Twilight Tours. The events will give people a chance to discover the castle in an intimate group setting and hear a range of lectures connected to its history. Visit lincolncastle.com for more information and tickets, which can also be bought at the Castle shop.

Creating memories on heritage days out for all the family PROVIDING a great day out for the whole family is the ethos behind any event, exhibition and activity organised by Lincolnshire County Council. Its Heritage Service has arranged a massive summer programme largely based on the area’s medieval history and celebrating the 800th anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln in 1217. These events will be primarily staged across Lincoln Castle and The Collection, and include the momentous Battles and Dynasties Exhibition (see page 26) and Domesday Book displayed with Magna Carta (see page 27) and Charter of the Forest, also celebrating its 800th Anniversary. “These will be fantastic and certainly draw those people who are interested in their art and heritage, but creating experiences for families underpins everything we do,” said Jon Hogan, Heritage Service Public Engagement Manager. Over the course of the summer there is a season of “Medieval Summer” family events at the castle, such as the Grand Medieval Joust and reenactments of William the Conqueror’s return to Lincoln and the castle he had built in 1068 (See pages 28-29). “We like to think of these events as inter-generational, so all the family can come and have a great day out. It’s about creating memories. For children in the summer holidays there are activities such as Fighting Knights at the castle (below) where youngsters can learn to use swords all under safe supervision.” Life in the refurbished Victorian Prison is also brought to life by castle characters as costumed performers tell tales of inmates, wardens, the Governor and Matron. There’s also an array of costumes for visitors to dress up in and perhaps even take a family selfie? There are many other activities catering for families from the Early
30
Morning Explorers designed for autistic children to all the digital, audio and film material suitable for youngsters with practical facilities including a buggy park, baby changing and high chairs in the café. “We have got a lot organised for children and families, but we musn’t overlook the castle itself, in between events - it’s a great space for the family to come, watch the kids play and enjoy in the sunshine. They can bring a picnic or enjoy great food and tasty treats from Langton’s Café.” The Collection regularly holds family events throughout the year, but has stepped up its programme for summer to include Medieval Week, Archaeology Week and Ye Olde Bug Day: Plague Fleas and Creepy Cockroaches. Another Heritage Service site, Gainsborough Old Hall, is a medieval manor house built by the Burgh family, who had strong connections with the Tudor dynasty, especially Henry VIII. This connection is explored in the exhibition of sumptuous costumes (right) from the BBC2 series Wolf Hall, which is accompanied by a trail for youngsters, while the Hall also operates a Friday Fun Club covering Woven Wonders, Tomb Raiders among others . The Museum of Lincolnshire Life and The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Centre cover different aspects of the county’s heritage, but Jon said the rationale behind their activities was the same. “Basically we want to create days out worth talking about. An example of this is the Museum’s Alive event on Father’s Day, June 18 when volunteers and staff will be dressed in costume at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. “You will be able to buy sweets from the Victorian sweet shop; make a card on the printing press shop or play traditional games such as hopscotch and stick and hoop in the Victorian playground.” Museum’s Alive also runs every Thursday during the school holidays. “Some organisations say you have fun while learning, while we say our events mean you’re learning while having fun - there is a subtle difference, but it’s basically about offering experiences that make people want to come back time and time again and discover what else we do,“ said Jon. See our listings for the events or see our Useful Contacts section on page 5 for further information. There’s also www.visitlincoln.com/kids.
Gainsborough old Hall is a medieval manor house dating back to 1460 and has had its fair share of royal visitors including Henry VIII.

The Thursday afternoon session is free, but there will be a £3 entry charge for the sessions on Thursday night, Friday and Saturday. Visit www.lincolncamra.org.uk Across Broadgate The Jolly Brewer’s Summer Beer Festival also starts on Thursday, May 25 with music from the best of the pub’s regular Open Mic performers. Landlord Mark Siddy tries to ensure the Brewer’s beers are different from those available at the Drill Hall. “Our list of beers is still being finalised but we will have something to suit all tastes and we’re trying to treat our customers to something that isn’t usually available in Lincoln.” The pub’s extensive beer garden will be the setting for music from The Manipulators on Friday, May 26; Blue Boy Kings on the Saturday and while Sunday is not officially part of the festival but if there are some beers left patrons can enjoy the mop up with rockers from the Playing Aloud stable. Performances start between 8.30pm-9pm and children are welcome at the festival until 7pm. Featured ales will be listed on The Official Jolly Brewer facebook page.
BEER lovers can enjoy two events dedicated to the amber nectar over the May Spring bank holiday. It’s 40 years since the first Lincoln Beer Festival was held at the Stag’s Head pub on Newport with just a dozen ales available in an upstairs room. Now the festival is held at the Drill Hall and is an important event in the city’s calendar with a choice of more than 100 real ales from across the country. Held May 25-27 the Campaign for Real Ale event will also feature traditionally brewed ciders and perries with food and live music in the café bar.
