hat do Duck Tape®, fire, bagpipes, and antique farm equipment have in common?...They are all unique features of Lorain County celebrated with festivals! We take your idyllic summer fest to another level, and show you something you’ve never seen before. You'll find an explosion of multi-colored adhesives at the Avon Heritage Duck Tape® Festival (June 17−19, 2016). Everything you love about traditional festivals is better when it’s done in Duck Tape®. Think life-sized vendor booths made of Duck Tape®, Duck Tape® floats, Duck Tape® fashion show, and Duck Tape® crafting stations. After a weekend full of building, sculpting, and playing with Duck Tape®, relax for a few days on Lake Erie before heading a bit south to the 39th Annual Ohio Scottish Games & Celtic Festival

(June 24−25, 2016). If you want authentic look no further. You’ll be surrounded by Scottish clans, pipe bands and Highland Games such as the caber toss – a true symbol of Scottish and Celtic culture. Picture a man throwing a log four times his own height! The FireFish Festival (September 17, 2016) is a celebration of arts and culture that incorporate fire to “ignite” your imagination. We’re talking burning sculptures, opera on a fire truck, fire dancing on rooftops type of creativity. After the ultra-modern feel of FireFish events, it may be nice to get back to Ohio’s roots at the LaGrange Engine Show (September 16−18, 2016). Hosted by the LaGrange Engine Club, this festival features antique farm equipment and other antique engine powered machinery such as a steam powered sawmill. This show will really get your gears turning!

A Beach for Every Body
WWW.VISITLORAINCOUNTY.COM
With over 25 miles of Lake Erie shoreline, there is a beach for “every body” in Lorain County. Just outside of downtown Cleveland is Avon Lake, Ohio. Hit the beach in Avon Lake if you’re a water sports fan. Miller Road Park is ideal for boaters, jet-skiers, wakeboarders, and more. The two-lane public boat launch is open 24 hours. If you love the sights, sounds, and smells of the beach, but are more interested in history and heritage, then Veterans Memorial Park is the place for you. This beach park houses the historic Folger Home and Avon Lake Cemetery. For the cyclist, stop by Lakewood Beach Park in Sheffield Lake. Convenient bike rack storage makes for a great, scenic stop along the Back Roads and Beaches. For the foodie and nature lovers, head to Lakeview Park in Lorain. Guests of all ages can enjoy breathtaking views of the Lorain Lighthouse. The beach at Showse Park is best for the paddler. Enter the Vermilion-Lorain Water Trail here! This bustling beach is also perfect for families. When the sand is no longer entertaining the kids, they can turn their attention to the playground.

ALL ABOUT DRINKS
ALL ABOUT FLAVOR
Jeremy from Bistro 83 in North Ridgeville touts that the Bistro and Wine Bar is always trying to do things outside of the box, and that means The. Best. Happy Hour. Their happy hour features unbeatable drink and bite prices with a 4-5 star experience and menu. Recently, Bistro 83 began featuring smoked drinks. They smoke their drinks in house. After making and aerating their own bourbon, they infuse the drinks with smoke for an exceptionally unique taste. Bistro 83 is now experimenting with smoked foods too - talk about outside the box.
“Sapori” means flavors in Italian – which is where the name for Sapori Itallian Grille in Avon Lake comes from. Owners Kelly Marquis and Joe Truscello teamed up to start this business from scratch – the same way they prepare their dishes. Sicilian chef-owner Truscello uses his grandmother’s recipes to prepare many of the dishes served in the restaurant.
Fill in the blank: “I go to Bistro 83 if I want pretty much anything from drinks to beer to food to happy hour!”
Recommended Dish: 12
Local Flavor
Scallops Creamy Risotto, Grape Tomatoes, Amish Bacon Lardons and Portobella Mushrooms in a Red Wine-Tomato Broth
Fill in the blank: “I go to Sapori if I want to be treated like family.” At Sapori they greet all their customers by name. The owners spend time on the floor each night to get to know their guests – new and returning.
Recommended Dish: Chicken or Veal Marsala chicken or veal slices | butter | mushrooms | marsala wine sauce
ALL ABOUT ATMOSPHERE While Nemo Grille in Avon enters its 15th year of business, the rooms you eat in are over 100 years old! Guests enjoy their American eclectic dishes like steak, seafood, and pasta, while listening to 100-year old wood floors creak under their feet and marveling at the exposed brick walls of the 1850 Alten House. Owner Bob Nemo takes pride in his restaurant’s good service, good food, and good drinks, the latter two of which chefs Jen and Sebastian prepare with seasonal ingredients sourced from local markets and growers.
Fill in the blank: “I go to Nemo Grille if I want amazing food, personal service, and a cool dining experience in a unique environment.”
Recommended Dish: Chilean Sea Bass Truffle Cheese Sachetti Pasta, Grilled Asparagus, Marcona Almond Brown Butter Sauce

Lorain County Metro Parks 25145 Royalton Rd. Columbia Station | 236.3254 409 acres feature approximately 285 acres of constructed wetlands. Nesters include Hooded Merganser, Green Heron, Virginia Rail, Sora, both cuckoos, six species of flycatchers, Prothonotary Warbler, and Orchard Oriole. Good numbers and diversity of waterfowl can stop in spring migration, and depending on water levels, late summer and fall can produce good shorebirding.
SANDY RIDGE RESERVATION Lorain County Metro Parks 6195 Otten Rd. North Ridgeville | 327.3626 Productive at any season, but it is especially known for the numbers and diversity of breeding birds. List is nearly 250 species. Over 100 nesting species have thus far been recorded, including many regional rarities. Wooded areas can produce an excellent variety of songbirds in both spring and fall migration, and the wetlands often harbor lots of shoreall area codes
birds in late summer and fall. At least twenty species of plovers and sandpipers have been documented. Winter brings raptors such as Northern Harrier, Roughlegged Hawk, and Shorteared Owl. Merlin and Peregrine Falcon are occasionally noted in fall migration. Unusual breeders include American and Least bitterns, Northern Harrier, Virginia Rail, Sora, Sandhill Crane, Sedge Wren, and Cerulean Warbler. There are records for Cackling Goose, Eared Grebe, Little Blue Heron, and Red-necked Phalarope.
MILLER ROAD PARK City of Avon Lake 33570 Lake Rd. Avon Lake | 930.4130 A sizeable section of Lake Erie adjacent to Miller Park does not freeze in winter. This open water area can be fabulous for gulls and waterfowl when the lake is otherwise iced over. Large numbers of migrant Red-breasted Mergansers, Bonaparte’s Gulls, and occasional scoters and other ducks can be seen passing by in late fall. When all else is covered with ice, the opening off Miller Park can teem with Common Goldeneye, Common Merganser, Canvasback, Greater Scaup and other hardy fowl. Thousands of gulls often congregate, mostly Herring and Ringbilled gulls, but rarer species are usually present as well.

LORAIN HARBOR Lorain Port Authority 611 Broadway Ave. Lorain | 204.2269 A birding hotspot from November until ice-up of the harbor. Good numbers of waterfowl often loaf in the harbor, and staggering numbers of Red-breasted Mergansers can be seen passing by on Lake Erie. The spoil impoundment just east of the harbor’s east pier can be good for songbirds in migration. The willows lure many species of warblers, flycatchers, and other species, and oddities such as Barn Owl can even turn up. An impressive list of
OBERLIN RESERVOIR
FINDLEY STATE PARK Ohio State Parks 25381 State Route 58 Wellington | 647.5749 The park’s 838 acres is mostly forested and supports an excellent diversity of woodland breeding birds. Noteworthy nesters include the Red-shouldered Hawk, Barred Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Veery, nine species of warblers, Scarlet Tanager, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. A nearly 100-acre lake in the center of the park often attracts loons and various diving ducks in migration. Mature pine plantations sometimes lure boreal irruptive species in winter, including Red-breasted Nuthatch, Pine Siskin, and both crossbills. The park’s woodlands can be fabulous
in May and September for songbird migration.
WELLINGTON RESERVOIR Jones Rd. Wellington | 647.3164 Large numbers of waterfowl stop in fall migration. Nearly every species of diving duck can be seen, sometimes at one time. Massive numbers of American Coots and Ruddy Ducks also gather in late fall. Common Loons can be expected, especially in April and November. Osprey and Bald Eagles are regular visitors. All three scoter species occur regularly, as does Long-tailed Duck. Cackling Goose has been found on several occasions. Red-throated Loon is always possible in November.
VERMILION RIVER RESERVATION 51211 North Ridge Rd. Vermilion | 967.7310 The scenic Vermilion River, bisects the reservation. The best natural area – and birding – is in the Bacon Woods unit, which makes up the park’s west side. The most interesting birding is in spring and fall migration, and during the breeding season. Nearly 100 nesting species have been confirmed, including Bald Eagle, both cuckoos, Cliff Swallow, and Brown Creeper. Thirteen species of warblers breed locally, including Louisiana Waterthrush, Blue-winged, Prothonotary, Hooded, Cerulean, Chestnut-sided, Yellow-throated, and Prairie warblers, American Redstart, and Yellow-breasted Chat.

43885 Parsons Rd. Oberlin | 775.7291 From late fall until the reservoir freezes, huge numbers of waterfowl often congregate. Their ranks can include nearly every species of regularly occurring diver, as well as many species of dabbling ducks. Hundreds of Ruddy Ducks and American Coots often gather. Large numbers of Herring and Ring-billed gulls use the reservoir as a roosting site, and rarer species are sometimes found amongst them. Any of
