CELEBRATING LOVE

RE-MAILING PROGRAM

Loveland has been celebrating love since the 1940’s, and in the 1960’s the Miss Love‐ land Valentine program was created.

Volunteers hand-stamp thousands of Valentine’s cards at the Chamber that get sent all over the world each February.

LOVELAND, CO… WHERE LOVE LIVES It all started in 1946 when the local postmaster proposed the concept of a special Loveland Valentine’s Day stamp. His idea quickly took off, and thus begin the Loveland Valentine Re-Mailing program, which has sent love through millions of valentines around the world. The program, which is run by the Loveland Chamber of Commerce, still exists today and has received international acclaim. In 1962, Miss Loveland Valentine was established as the city’s spokesperson for the season, and a yearround heart-shaped mascot named Valentina was introduced in 2016. Since the 1940’s Loveland has embraced its name and designation as the Sweetheart City. Each year, the Loveland Sweetheart Festival in downtown celebrates Valentine’s Day with a multi-day festival of light shows, music, arts, vendors, a 4-mile race, and more. A group wedding on Valentine’s Day features a romantic candlelit ceremony where couples can get married or renew their vows. All marriage licenses issued from Loveland have a special “Sweetheart City” designation on them. If you’ve ever driven through Loveland during February you’ve seen the 300+ wooden hearts with messages of love hung up on lampposts. Messages have ranged from funny love notes to marriage proposals. Valentine’s season would not be complete in Loveland without magical love potions. Grimm Brothers Brewhouse produces the Bleeding Heart Beer, the official beer of the season. Sweet Heart Winery makes the official sweetheart wine, and Top of the Lake produces a specialty coffee blend. Two of the largest love lock sculptures live in Loveland. One spelling out LOVE is at the Visitors Center and a heart-shaped one lives at Lake Loveland. What better place is there to lock your love for eternity than in the land of love?

VALENTINA THE MASCOT

LOVE POTIONS

This heart-shaped mascot can often be found at various places around the city.

Only in Loveland can you find official Loveland beer, coffee and wine.

GROUP WEDDING

HEARTS ON LAMPPOSTS

Couples renew their vows and get married in a beautiful ceremony on Valentine’s Day.

These love notes are scattered through‐ out the city during February.

SWEETHEART FESTIVAL Music, light shows, entertainment, games, contests, a race, and much more take place in downtown each Valentine’s weekend.

Art & C ultu r a l E x p e r i e n c e s

ART & CULTURE Loveland is known as one of the best small art towns in America. From sculpture and foundry tours to our accredited Loveland Museum which features world-class art exhibitions, our galleries and art spaces are an integral part of Loveland’s unique culture.

D

@iamallisonkay

id you know that in 1985 Loveland became the first city in Colorado to enact an ordinance which earmarks 1% of all capital improvement projects over $50,000 for public art? Today, the city's collection encompasses more than 540 diverse works of art valued at approximately $11.4 million. Over 69% of that was donated by private contributions. From sculpture parks to painted transformer boxes through‐ out the city, there’s no doubt that Loveland is truly an arts destination.

6

Benson Sculpture Garden

Buildings along 4th and 5th Streets from Jefferson to Railroad Avenues in downtown Loveland are canvases for uniquely artistic and creative street murals. Currently there are 17 - can you find them all? Take a self-guided scavenger hunt journey to find 36 individually painted hearts as part of the City with HeArt Program. These are scattered throughout the city and a fun way to explore Loveland. Maps are available at the Visitors Center.

Chapungu Sculpture Park at Centerra

Public art is everywhere in Love‐ land! Loveland is home to four free outdoor sculpture parks: Benson Sculpture Garden, Chapungu Sculpture Park, Foote Lagoon, and McWhinneyHahn Sculpture Park. Benson Sculpture Garden is a 10acre outdoor park featuring mostly bronze sculpture but you can also find stone, wood and metal pieces. The park has over 172 pieces of art on permanent display, allowing guests to interact with the pieces. Each year during the second weekend of August the park hosts Sculpture in the Park (the largest out‐ door juried sculpture show in the U.S.). Nearby North Lake Park is home to Art in the Park and the Loveland Fine Art & Sculpture Invitational during that same sculpture show weekend. On the east side of Loveland is the 26-acre Chapungu Sculpture Park. Featuring 82 Zimbabwean stone sculp‐ tures telling stories of family, children, elders and village life, Chapungu is the only permanent exhibit of its kind in the country. The park comes to life for the annual free Winter Wonderlights event in the winter. The McWhinney-Hahn Sculpture Park features several bronze sculp‐ tures along the grounds near the Love‐ land Visitors Center while the Foote Lagoon is located just steps away from downtown.

Bronze pour at Art Castings Foundry

Benson Sculpture Garden is home to the largest outdoor juried sculpture show in the country each August.

Be sure to add a bronze foundry tour to your itinerary to learn how sculptures are made. The ancient lost wax process will give you a new appreciation for how sculptures are brought to life from beginning to end. For a truly memorable experience, see a bronze pour at Art Castings of Colorado or Bronze Services! Reservations may be required so be sure to call in advance. Another must-do is a visit to the Loveland Museum, home to seasonal world-class exhibits that have featured artists including Dali, Goya and O'Keeffe. Travel back in time to learn about Loveland’s rich history in the free history museum. The Loveland Museum received accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums. Less than 5% of the museums in the United States are accredited, and the Loveland Museum is one of only three accredited institutions in Northern Colorado.

Visiting an art town provides the opportunity to meet and interact with local artists at one of many local galleries and studios. Don’t miss the annual Governor’s Art Show & Sale to see works from Colorado’s top artists each May and June, or the Loveland Art Studio Tour in October to explore galleries throughout the city. For a listing of galleries, visit our website.
