A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE...
The inspiration for Winter Carnival actually dates back to 1924 when the town created the Payette Lakes Sports Carnival to beat the winter doldrums. Events included dog and snowshoe races, ski jumping, horse ski-jouring, and a tug-o-war where the prize was a box of oranges. In addition to these events, visitors could also take an exhilarating ride across the lake ice on a motor sleigh, a standard sleigh outfitted with an airplane motor for power.
As guest lodging was limited in the 1920s, the overflow of visitors were housed by residents who opened their homes for the event. In addition, a special train with sleeper cars attached was positioned at the train station and reduced rates were offered as another form of accommodation for visitors. The first Sports Carnival was attended by approximately 2,000 people, including then Idaho Governor C. Moore.
The Payette Lakes Sports Carnival lasted several years, but began to fade out as organized clubs and the development of permanent facilities such as the Little Ski Hill made sporting competitions more formal. The Sports Carnival eventually evolved into an “Ice Break-Up Contest.” A person could purchase a ticket and enter a guess as to what day, hour, and minute the ice on Payette Lake would break up in the spring. The last contest was held in 1941 and ended as gambling became illegal.
In 1965, the community rallied to bring back a winter festival to McCall, motivated by a desire to promote skiing in the area. Brundage Mountain Resort had opened a few years earlier in 1961, and the first official Winter Carnival was held on the same weekend as the University of Idaho Ski Invitational at Brundage, which included events such as slalom racing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, snowshoe races, and snowcat races. The first Winter Carnival in 1965 was a two-day event that drew regional visitors to the area.
PLAN AHEAD FOR THE 2024 MCCALL WINTER CARNIVAL
Our goal as a Chamber is not simply to promote tourism in the McCall area, but rather, to support our business community through all of the various challenges it may face.
In recent years, it’s become clear that the current format of Winter Carnival is no longer working for many of our service and hospitality businesses. Using city lodging tax revenues to assess visitation trends, the Chamber found that visitation during the months of January and February has skyrocketed, rising 201.5% over the past 10 years. Hidden in this large number is an even more interesting statistic: January/February occupancy rose by 22.66% from FY20 to FY21, the year that Winter Carnival was canceled due to COVID-19. The following year, when Carnival was reinstated, those collections continued rising, but by a smaller percentage, just 3.7%.
Additionally, a Chamber survey of McCall area businesses conducted at the end of the 2021 Winter season showed:
• 82.5% reported that canceling Winter Carnival had no negative impact on their business
• 80% reported winter business was UP during the winter when there was no Winter Carnival (2021)
• 70% of businesses supported either shortening Carnival to one weekend or moving it later in the winter, only 30% voted for no change
With our community facing a housing shortage and businesses facing ongoing staffing challenges, the current set up of Winter Carnival no longer meets the needs of our business community. These factors, along with feedback from our business and community members, have prompted us to search for solutions.
WHAT TO KNOW FOR 2024:
The McCall Winter Carnival is moving to a single weekend (three-day event) starting in 2024.
The McCall Winter Carnival will be held the last full weekend in February starting in 2024.
All your favorite events will continue to be held including fireworks, the Mardi Gras Parade, the Torchlight Parade, live music, vendors, and (of course) snow sculptures!

THANK YOU TO
I will avoid left-hand turns during high traffic times to preserve my own sanity and that of the cars behind me.
I will soak in the fresh mountain air and small-town charm.
I will be kind and courteous, even when hangry.
I will not invent my own trail while seeking the trail less traveled.
I will stand in awe of the local wildlife, but not stand too close…even in pursuit of the perfect photo.
I will keep a keen eye out for Sharlie.
I will not get freaked out when someone tips a hat or waves in passing on a back road – locals are just a friendly bunch.
I will take my lead from Smokey Bear and drown my campfire.
I will respect the natural wonders that make this place so special and do my part to keep the water and the land as I found it.
I will say please and thank you like my parents taught me and remember to tip my servers.
I will adhere to Leave No Trace practices and take my trash with me (and any I may find along the way).
I will plan for several seasons of weather to happen in one day and pack clothing accordingly.
I will respect no wake zones in the summer and avalanche reports in the winter.
I will brake for pedestrians and bikes and town deer (even when they forget to carry the bright green flags provided at crosswalks).
sign the promise today!

OUTDOOR ACTIVITY GUIDE
Get outside and enjoy the fresh mountain air
The McCall Winter Carnival was started as a way to celebrate the amazing outdoor winter recreation here in McCall. So get out there! From skiing and snowboarding to snowshoeing and ice bumper cars, there is something for the entire family.
nordic skiing
When the sun shines in the winter, powder can play second fiddle to a fresh groomer…a staple for Nordic skiers and something McCall has plenty of. McCall’s broad network of trails and skiable terrain mean that all types of skiers can find an escape in McCall.
PRO TIP:
many recreation areas are out of cell range. download maps, directions and guides before setting out on your adventure!
Nordic skiing has been a staple in the mountains around McCall since the Finnish and Scandinavian settlers first homesteaded here in the 1880s. While the equipment has made leaps and bounds since the 1880s, the exhilaration of flying along on “skinny skis” remains the same. Not only is Nordic skiing a workout, it is an easy way to enjoy the peace and solitude of a winter forest.
We rounded up some of our favorite Nordic trails around the McCall area to get you started:
bear basin
Quick and Easy: Just Right
As the name implies, Just Right is about as good as it gets for an easy loop with your four-legged friend. This trail also provides a great opportunity to add in some distance or figure-eight through the meadows if you want to extend the route.
Endurance: Lyle’s Loop
To really experience Bear Basin, head out from the trailhead and link all of the outer loops together. This route skis well in either direction and offers scenic views of the Seven Devils Mountains culminating with a sweeping panorama on Lyle’s Loop.
ponderosa state park
Quick and Easy: Easy Does It Loop
This loop is perhaps the best beginner route you could ask for with a few great views of Payette Lake. To avoid downhills, ski this trail clockwise from the Activity Center.
Endurance: Re-Mastered Race Route
This loop covers just about every trail used during the 2008 World Masters and runs from top to bottom along the peninsula. Starting from the Activity Center, take Northern Lights and wind your way up to Thread the Needle before heading back down Fox Run. For a detailed map of this championship route, visit mccallnordic.com.
spring skiing crust-cruising
In the springtime, snow conditions align for a magical cross-country experience known as crust-cruising. If the days are warm and the nights are cold, the snow crusts over and enables skiers venture just about anywhere on the valley floor…no trail needed!
activity barn + north valley rail trail
The Activity Barn offers a great 5k loop for anyone looking for a quick adventure in the fresh winter air. There is no fee to ski the trail. The Activity Barn loop also connects into the North Valley Rail Trail which runs south to Heinrich Lane. The rail trail is maintained by Valley County Pathways and there is no fee to use this trail. Originally a Union Pacific railroad track, the line was retired in 1979. It now provides a scenic, multi-use pathway. The North Valley Rail Trail is a wide, gently rolling route perfect for first-timers or pros after a sun-filled ski. Dogs welcome!
jug mountain ranch
Quick and Easy: Fenceline – Harper’s Loop – Lower Hoot – Gully
From the Clubhouse, head out on Fenceline and connect with Harper’s Loop and Lower Hoot. To keep it short and sweet, take Gully back to the Clubhouse or extend your ski by adding some short climbs with Up & Over and Harper’s Cutoff.
Endurance: Reservoir Loop
Take South Boundary to the Upper Jug Reservoir and ski the reservoir loop. On the way back down to the Clubhouse, choose to take South Boundary for a gentler descent. For an exciting ride to the bottom, both Mainline and Around the Mountain are the way to go.
tamarack resort
Quick and Easy: Pelican Head south from the Nordic Center to find long, easy, semi-flat skiing. While there are a few short climbs along this route, the terrain is rolling with minimal climbing required
Endurance: Pelican – Redtail – Merlin Loop
Run the full gamut of Nordic terrain with this sweeping loop. Cruise the meadow along Pelican then connect the loop by climbing to Redtail and Merlin. FOR
ski & snowboard
With three alpine ski areas and an average of 300 inches of snowfall each year, McCall is home to some of the finest skiing and snowboarding in the Northwest. Untracked powder, smooth corduroy, and plenty of terrain park features to keep you shredding.

We rounded up some of our favorite Nordic trails around the McCall area to get you started:
The McCall area has always been a haven for snow seekers. From ski jumping competitions held at Blackwell Ranch in the 1920s to the development of three ski areas –the Little Ski Hill in 1937, Brundage Mountain Resort in 1961 and Tamarack Resort in 2004 – a love of winter sports has always been at the heart of the McCall community.
TAMARACK RESORT

Quick and Easy: Just Right
As the name implies, Just Right is about as good as it gets for an easy loop with your four-legged friend. This trail also provides a great opportunity to add in some distance or figure-eight through the meadows if you want to extend the route.
Tamarack offers 1,020 skiable acres to skiers and snowboarders of all ages and ability levels. With 2,800 feet of vertical terrain, there is always something new to explore. We love Tamarack for its tree skiing, vertical drop (try “Bliss” for an amazing top-to-bottom run), an on-site ski-in, ski-out lodging options. Don’t forget to check out the expanding Village with shops and new dining experiences!

5 tips
spring skiing crust-cruising
#1.
Dress for Success
In the springtime, snow conditions align for a magical cross-country experience known as crust-cruising. If the days are warm and the nights are cold, the snow crusts over and enables skiers venture just about anywhere on the valley floor…no trail needed!
Layer 1 – Base – Socks, thermal underwear, undershirt. Choose a synthetic material/ blend (avoid 100% cotton) that will wick moisture away from your body. Socks (1 pair) should be thin and long enough to rise above the boot.
Layer 2 – Insulating – Fleece or wool works very well as a middle layer.
Layer 3 – Outer Layer – Gloves, coat, ski/snow pants. Waterproof and wind resistant is the key.

Safety - A helmet and googles or sunglasses are essential on the mountain. And don’t forget the sunscreen!
#2.
Rent Gear That Fits
Avoid borrowing skis or snowboards from others since they are typically designed based on someone’s height and weight. You will have a better experience with gear that fits your body and level of expertise. You can rent at the resorts or from local shops like Home Town Sports.
#3.
Have Realistic Expectations
Dogs

You’ll spend some time in the beginner area – and you should...don’t get pressured into going on bigger slopes before you are ready. You will fall. Laugh and get back up. We highly recommend taking a lesson, even if it is only one!
Quick and Easy: Fenceline – Harper’s Loop – Lower Hoot – Gully
#4. Don’t Be A Gaper
“Gapers” are people who show up unprepared for the weather or who frequently violate the Skiers and Riders Responsibility Code:
From the Clubhouse, head out on Fenceline and connect with Harper’s Loop and Lower Hoot. To keep it short and sweet, take Gully back to the Clubhouse or extend your ski by adding some short climbs with Up & Over and Harper’s Cutoff.
Always stay in control.
Endurance: Reservoir Loop
• People ahead of you have the right of way.
Take South Boundary to the Upper Jug Reservoir and ski the reservoir loop. On the way back down to the Clubhouse, choose to take South Boundary for a gentler descent. For an exciting ride to the bottom, both Mainline and Around the Mountain are the way to go.
• Stop in a safe place where others can see you and out of the flow of ski traffic.
• Whenever starting downhill or merging from one trail to another, look uphill and yield to oncoming skiers and snowboarders.
• Use devices on your skis to help prevent runaway equipment.

• Observe all signs and warnings and keep off closed trails.
• Know how to use the lifts safely.
#5. Take Time For The Little Things
Quick and Easy: Pelican Head south from the Nordic Center to find long, easy, semi-flat skiing. While there are a few short climbs along this route, the terrain is rolling with minimal climbing required Endurance: Pelican – Redtail – Merlin Loop
Run the full gamut of Nordic terrain with this sweeping loop. Cruise the meadow along Pelican then connect the loop by climbing to Redtail and Merlin.
The views from our mountains are gorgeous. The feeling of the snow, wind and sun on your face can be exhilarating and life-affirming. The thrill of gravity and the solace of nature are all part of what makes skiing and snowboarding sports worth learning – and enjoying for a lifetime. So don’t forget to look around, listen to the sounds of the mountains, and be proud of yourself for trying something new!
fat biking
Fat bikes have been gaining traction over the last few years in McCall for their ability to grip surfaces a traditional mountain bike would not be able to traverse. There really is no limit to where you can take a fat bike!
PRO TIP:
many recreation areas are out of cell range. download maps, directions and guides before setting out on your adventure!
what is a fat bike?
A fat bike is an off-road bicycle with oversized tires, designed for low ground pressure to give you better traction on soft unstable terrain, such as snow, sand, and mud.
is riding a fat bike just like riding a mountain bike?
While similar, fat biking tends to be a lot slower than traditional mountain biking. Tire pressure plays a big role in how you can “float” on top of the snow. That paired with the large tires means movements happen at a slower pace, so it takes some time getting used to transitioning to biking on snow. We recommend starting out on a flat trail to get the hang of it!
fat bike gear
clothing
Fat biking will get your heart pumping, so make sure to layer. Moisture-wicking layers, softshell pants or warm leggings, and a lightly insulated jacket usually do the trick.
boots
Waterproof boots that allow for some ankle movement are your best bet. And add some insulating socks to keep those toes warm as you adventure.
The Bike
Purchasing a fat bike is an investment. Before you consider buying, or if you are just starting out, rent a fat bike from one of our local retailers. They offer everything from a 2-hour test drive to full day rentals.

fat bike etiquette
When riding on groomed trails, always stay on the designated path. If it is a shared trail, keep to the side of the trail and be mindful of conditions. On Nordic trails groomed with a Classic track, be sure to not ride over these specially set lines. On shared snowmobile trails, it is a good idea to wear reflective clothing, stay to the far right of the trail, and yield to fastermoving snowmobiles.
If you are sinking into the snow and leaving ruts on a groomed trail, it is too soft to ride.
pro tip
tire pressure makes
all the difference
As a general rule, the softer the conditions, the lower air pressure you need in your fat bike tires. For hard-packed terrain, a PSI of 6 to 8 is usually ideal. For a soft, groomed surface, try starting at a PSI of 5 and work your way down to ensure you don’t leave ruts. Just remember, it is easier to let air out of your tires as you ride than add more air, so starting at a higher PSI and letting air out as conditions warrant works best!

Snowshoeing is ranked as one of the fastest growing winter sports worldwide. Not only is it easy to do, snowshoeing is a great supplement to a weekend itinerary full of other activities. Stay on a designated snowshoe trail or stick to wide open meadows to keep things relaxed. When you are ready to take it up a notch, just turn uphill! Higher elevations with steeper terrain and deeper snow offer up a challenging workout.
why try snowshoeing
“This sport has a really low barrier to entry,” says Katie Hearsum, contributing writer for Snowshoe Magazine. “It is ideal for families and kids or even a group of girlfriends who want to get outside but still have the breath to gab.” All you really need is a pair of winter boots, snowshoes and trekking poles. Then just start walking!
Snowshoeing is also a great supplement to a weekend itinerary full of other activities. “There really is no downside to snowshoeing,” says Hearsum. If you haven’t tried snowshoeing yet, now is the time to get out there and start trekking!
getting started with the right gear
clothing
As with any winter sport, the name of the game is layering! Start with socks and thermal underwear in a synthetic material to wick moisture (cotton is not your friend here). Softshell pants that are water resistant (if not waterproof) work great to keep you moving. Add a mid-layer top and pack a waterproof or insulating layer depending on the weather.
boots
Stick to waterproof boots with some insulation. While just about any boot will do, a waterproof hiking boot is ideal. Snow boots can be a bit bulky in the snowshoe bindings, so be sure to check the compatibility of your boots with your snowshoes before setting out.
snowshoes
Rent or purchase a pair of your own at one of our local retailers. Snowshoes come in all shapes and sizes to fit children and adults.
Add-Ons
Poles are popular, especially on a longer trek. Rent a pair with your snowshoes or use your ski poles if they are handy. You can also add in gaters if you have an opportunity to use themthey help keep the snow out of your boots!
A light backpack with water and snacks is also an easy addition to your snowshoeing gear.
where to snowshoe around the mccall area
While you can snowshoe just about anywhere, there are a few easy access points around McCall where you can go for a quick trek.
Ponderosa State Park, Bear Basin, Jug Mountain Ranch, the North Valley Rail Trail, and Tamarack Resort all offer snowshoe trails. Some have designated trails while others allow snowshoers on the side of groomed Nordic trails. Be sure to check with each areas for current grooming conditions and access.
feature trail goose creek falls
The Goose Creek Falls trail is one of the most popular hikes during the summer months, but it is also a great trail to take in the winter! Strap on your snowshoes and meander through snow-covered Douglas fir and down Goose Creek Canyon along a clear mountain stream.
To access the trailhead, drive west on Highway 55 from downtown McCall then turn right on the paved Brundage Mountain / Goose Lake Road. The Gordon Titus parking lot is about 3.5 miles from the Highway on the left, about a half mile before you get to Brundage Mountain Resort. The trailhead is located at the northern end of the parking lot. Follow the trail about 100 yards before coming to an open area and heading over the western ridge. From there, you will descend through Goose Creek Canyon until you come to the Goose Creek Bridge. Turn south over the bridge and follow the creek downstream to the falls, a stunning 60 foot drop.
The hike is about 2 miles out and back and rated as a “moderate” hike due to the 650 foot elevation gain. This is a great option for families looking for a quick winter adventure. Dogs welcome!
snowmobiling & snow biking
SnoWest Magazine has called the McCall area some of the West’s premier snowmobiling country. With more than 500 miles of groomed trails, and the opportunity to jump off the trail anywhere along the way, there is unlimited riding potential. Whether you want to rent and ride your own machine or hire a seasoned guide to show you the ropes, the McCall area can accommodate both options.
PRO TIP:
many recreation areas are out of cell range. download maps, directions and guides before setting out on your adventure!
The vast and diverse riding opportunities available in the region have brought world-class athletes and riders to explore some of the best winter terrain around. Make no mistake about it, world class athlete or not, snowmobiling is a doable sport for almost anyone.
featured rides
Burgdorf hot springs
Historical Burgdorf Hot Springs is one of the ultimate winter destinations for our region. There are two ways to access the hot springs, either by the Warren Wagon Trail starting at the Francis Wallace parking lot past North Beach or the more scenic, less traveled path up and over Copet Creek to the west.
To take this scenic route, start from the Gordon Titus Parking Lot, located up Goose Creek Road half mile before you hit Brundage Mountain. From the parking lot, head up Goose Creek Road Trail past scenic spots like Clowe Point and Brundage Reservoir.
At the Brundage Reservoir intersection, take a right turn, heading east over Copet Creek Summit. This route ultimately takes you down to meet the well-trafficked Warren Wagon Road Trail and to the Burgdorf intersection twenty miles from where you meet the main trail.
granite lake
North of Brundage Reservoir lie dozens of additional trail miles and country to explore. The scenic views along this route such as Black Tip Point, Fisher Creek Saddle, and of Granite Lake once you reach your destination, make this ride worth every minute.
The direct route is groomed, but this area offers plenty of powder stashes for more advanced riders to play in. From the Gordon Titus Parking Lot, head north, keeping right and traveling along Brundage Reservoir. Follow the trail until you reach Granite Lake.

taking winter by storm snow biking
Idaho continues to be the epicenter for snow biking, even attracting big names like pro freestyle motocross rider Ronnie Renner to try out the sport near Burgdorf. But what is it that makes snow biking so appealing?
In a word, freedom. “On a snow bike, you just point in the direction you want to go, throttle up and lean where you need to,” says Sarah Whipple, a McCall area local. “A snow bike is much easier to ride in variable terrain,” says Whipple. “I feel more freedom on a snow bike, both on-trail and off-trail, because it’s so easy to go where I want without hesitation.”
For those looking to get into the snow bike game, we recommend you start with a reputable dealer. Mile High Power Sports in McCall has knowledgeable snow bikers on staff and carry the full line of Timbersled kits. They also offer select demo days where you can try before you buy (please check with Mile High Power Sports for demo schedules).
winter family fun
Planning a vacation, or even a single afternoon, where the kids are entertained and the parents can kick back and relax can seem next to impossible...but it is easy in McCall! From ice skating to sledding to skiing, there is no shortage of ways to keep the whole family entertained this winter.
PRO TIP:
keep kids happy in the snow - be sure to dress in warm layers and bring an extra pair of gloves! cold hands mean cranky kids.
t-bar magic
The Little Ski Hill is an institution in McCall. The local ski area first opened in 1937 and encompasses 80 acres of skiable terrain with 405 vertical feet. Originally, the lift was a large toboggan sled that carried skiers uphill. Today, the toboggan has been replaced by a T-bar that is famous in these parts…loading onto the T-bar is a rite of passage for kids and adults alike! Once at the top, kids have a ton of action-packed options to get to the bottom of the mountain. Groomed trails cover the face of the hill while a terrain park and tree skiing keep things interesting. The terrain park is another big draw and is a great playground for kids wanting to rip. The Little Ski Hill is also offers night skiing. This is the only lit mountain in area and makes for a great after work or weekend excursion for the whole family. Pair all of these accessible ski and snowboard opportunities together and you get one dynamic recreational area.
snow tubing
The Activity Barn is a perfect stop for any family. Pick out your tube at the bottom of the hill then jump on the new “magic carpet” type lift for a ride to the top. Once there, take in the views and stare down the massive 800 foot long chutes. Each season, up to 6 chutes are available for guests with varying degrees of slope and speed. The tubes are like big inflatable cushions for your ride down. The wonderful staff at the Activity Barn will help make sure you’re all set for the 85 foot drop. The Activity Barn is lit for night tubing until 6pm on Friday and Saturday evenings. There are also extended hours for holidays so you can get in some continuous downhill action.
ice fishing
Sitting on a frozen lake, staring down into a hole in the ice, willing a fish to bite may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But ice fishing isn’t just about the catch. It is an opportunity to get outside in the fresh air in the depths of winter and spend some time with the family. All you really need to get started is an ice fishing rod, a hook and some bait, an auger, a bucket, and some warm clothes!
Lake Cascade and Horsetheif Reservoir are great places to get your hook wet as you fish for lake trout and yellow perch.
ice skating + bumper cars
It is hard to miss this large building in downtown McCall. The Manchester Ice and Event Center is a cornerstone in the community offering ice skating, hockey leagues, curling, and stunning ice shows. The ice rink offers a wide range of instruction to get you started. Enroll in the official United States Figure Skating Association “Learn to Skate Basic Skills Program” or take a private or group lesson. Looking for a quick skate session without the instruction? Drop by during the daily Public Skate at the rink and glide along at your own pace. The ice rink also offers ice bumper cars - where you can twirl on the ice and bounce off of other participants. Rides start every 20 minutes during designated bumper car time slots. Please check the ice rink schedule for daily ice schedules.
