Vitamin D has earned a nickname as the “sunshine vitamin.”
This magical compound helps boost your immune system, lift your mood, and increase your energy. In the winter months, Vitamin D can seem elusive…unless you are in McCall! With more than 200 sunny days each year, McCall is the perfect place to replenish your Vitamin D stores with a little outdoor winter fun. Like that favorite sunshine vitamin, getting active in the winter can make a big difference in warding off cabin fever. This amazing combination of sunshine and a little do-it-yourself adventure result in a “relaxing workout” and what we like to call Vitamin DIY. Energize your body while finding your mental balance. We caught up with three winter recreation enthusiasts to see how they make their own Vitamin DIY in McCall.
The Sport: Snowshoeing Our Expert: Katie Hearsum, writer for Snowshoe Katie snowshoeing at Jug Mountain Ranch in McCall
“If you like nature, you better own a pair of snowshoes!” Katie Hearsum, a contributing writer for Snowshoe Magazine, makes a good point.
Magazine
Snowshoes were historically a means of winter survival, but in the 1970s, saw a transformation into a recreational activity. Since then, snowshoeing has grown into a perfect way to enjoy the snow. “This sport has a really low barrier to entry,” says Hearsum. “It is ideal for families and kids or even a group of girlfriends who want to get outside but still have the breath to gab.” All you really need is a pair of winter boots, snowshoes and trekking poles. Then just start walking! The beauty of snowshoeing is that you don’t need a trail to enjoy a trek. Whether you leave right from your back door or jump in the car to get to your adventure starting point, snowshoes are one of the best ways to explore winter terrain. “I love that you can make a snowshoe session as easy or hard as you want,” says Hearsum. Stay on a designated snowshoe trail (we recommend Bear Basin or Jug Mountain Ranch) or stick to wide open meadows to keep things relaxed. When you are ready to take it up a notch, just turn uphill! Higher elevations with steeper terrain and deeper snow offer up a challenging workout.

Working with Snowshoe Magazine has taken Hearsum around the northwest on snowshoes. She says McCall really hits the perfect stride when it comes to the sport. “McCall has a destination factor,” says Hearsum. “The views are spectacular and the terrain is varied without being overly steep.” But the best part? “It is not just about the snowshoeing! After a trek you still have time to come into town and visit a brewery, have lunch or go to the spa…McCall is incredibly charming,” Hearsum explains. We think that is why snowshoeing is ranked as one of the fastest growing winter sports worldwide. Not only is it easy to do, snowshoeing is a great supplement to a weekend itinerary full of other activities. “There really is no downside to snowshoeing,” says Hearsum. If you haven’t tried snowshoeing yet, now is the time to get out there and start trekking! Continued page 10

The Sport: Fat “Tire” Bike Riding Our Expert: Nick Bohnstedt, Avid Mountain Biker Have you seen these bikes around town and wondered what the heck was going on? Fat bikes have been gaining traction over the last few years in McCall for their ability to grip surfaces a traditional mountain bike would not be able to traverse. And as Nick Bohnstedt, a lifelong mountain biker and McCall resident points out, “fat bikes are a great way to stay fit in the winter for those of us who are less than graceful on Nordic skis.” Groomed trails at areas like Jug Mountain Ranch and the Activity Barn are a great place to start. In fact, Jug Mountain Ranch was the first resort in Valley County to open up all of its trails to fat biking and now they boast a network of fat bike-specific trails. This winter, look for a new groomed fat bike trail at McCall’s Activity Barn. You can even ride a conveyor lift to the top of the ridge to save time for extra downhill laps. “It is amazing to be able to mountain bike all year round,” says Bohnstedt. The big 4-inch-wide tires use low air pressure (5-10 psi) and this provides more traction and stability on ice and snow, helping the tires to “float” over slippery surfaces. While the big tires and weight of a fat bike translate into better balance, that also means you are going to get a great workout when you ride. “Riding a fat bike is a lot slower and more technical than traditional mountain biking,” Bohnstedt says. Most fat bikes are single speed which means that you will need plenty of muscle to power them. Because of this, Bohnstedt recommends renting first. “You aren’t going to be an expert right away,” he says. “There are a few new skills and techniques to master, but with a little patience and an appreciation for being outside, you will love it.” Once you have mastered the snow, take your fat bike on the trails all season! You can use these bikes to get around town after a heavy snow or during the springtime when dirt roads are soft and saturated. Plus, Bohnstedt says, “Hunters are discovering the benefits of fat biking for their ability to cover a lot of ground quietly, especially when many roads close to motorized vehicles during the fall rut.” Just be sure that as you venture farther out, you also pack necessary safety gear, food and extra water…just in case. Ready to get on a fat bike? Head over to our “How to Get Started” tip sheet to find out where to rent equipment and which trails to try first. Continued page 12

“Cross-country skiing is a grace sport, not a power sport,” explains Lyle Nelson Lyle carrying the American flag as team captain for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary
The Sport: Cross-Country Skiing Our Expert: Lyle Nelson, 4-time Biathlon Olympian Let’s face it. Cross-country skiing can look a little intimidating. In comparison to snowshoeing and fat bike riding, there is a steeper learning curve, but that doesn’t mean you should skip this fabulous sport. For some inspiration, we turned to McCall local Lyle Nelson, four-time Olympian in the biathlon at the 1976, 1980, 1984 and 1988 winter games. For newbies to cross-country skiing, Nelson recommends going early on with someone who knows the ropes. “An experienced skier can show you a few tricks that may not be immediately intuitive and within 45 minutes you will be hooked.” Turn to a friend for help or take a lesson from one of the area Nordic centers. The key, Nelson says, is to find your balance. “Find your balance, find your stride.” And he’s not just talking about your skiing skills. “Cross-country skiing is a grace sport, not a power sport,” explains Nelson. “You have to relax to be able to balance...it should be a spiritual journey.” Fortunately, McCall is a perfect place to find this serenity. “There is the person who wants to storm up a hill and gets a kick out of flying downhill around corners on skinny skies,” says Nelson. “Then there is the person who is simply enchanted by the outdoors.” Nelson would put himself in the latter category. “As a young person, it was about the competition of the sport, but as I get older, cross country skiing has become much more about the beauty and joy of nature,” he explains. “It is its own romantic, exhilarating experience.”

And McCall’s broad network of trails and skiable terrain mean that all types of skiers can find an escape in McCall. Find groomed trails at Ponderosa State Park, Bear Basin, Jug Mountain Ranch, the Activity Barn, and Tamarack Resort. A small trail fee applies at most of these locations, so be sure to check in at the welcome centers upon arrival. Outside of the designated Nordic trail systems, Nelson says McCall is ideal for “crust-cruising,” that magical phenomenon when the top layers of snow are heated by the sunshine then freeze overnight. This allows skiers to glide through large open areas on a crusty layer…no grooming needed. Nelson recommends the meadows near the Activity Barn. “The entire area is a carpet for skiers,” he says. Looking to stay on a groomed trail but adventure farther into the backcountry? “Snowmobiling and Nordic skiing are much more compatible then people realize,” says Nelson. “Try a few snowmobile trails mid-week when there isn’t so much traffic and you will discover a huge network of places to explore.” Just turn around before you get tired. “You never want to end a ski session thinking ‘this is not fun’ because you wore yourself out,” advises Nelson. “Finish refreshed so you have energy for all of the other things in your day.” “You don’t have to be an Olympian to have a lifetime of unforgettable experiences on the snow,” Nelson reminds us. But you do have to get outside! Now is the time to unwrap from that snuggly blanket by the fire and take winter by storm with these accessible options. Strap on the snowshoes, jump on a fat bike, or glide over the snow on cross-country skis to start earning your Vitamin DIY. Not only will you feel refreshed, you will make some amazing memories this winter in McCall! Continued page 14

slice of life By Lindsey Harris The sport of curling, a bit of a mystery for most. As an outsider, an ice sheet with a bullseye, people lunging with large stones, unknown hand signals cast with some yelling, and a scoreboard that may as well be Greek, one may wonder what on earth is going on. Is curling a sport? Well, ask a curler and they will let you know that it is, indeed, a sport. McCall Curling Club has been around for 12 years with Manchester Ice Centre as their home since 2004. At their peak and post-Salt Lake City Olympics of 2002, the McCall Curling Club boasted nearly 100 curlers and was the second largest league west of the Mississippi following Seattle. Presently, the club has around 40 members. Curling began in Scotland during the 16th century, and originally was played on frozen ponds. The granite that the stones are made of are quarried in only two parts of the world: Ailsa Craig, an island off the Ayrshire coast of Scotland, and the Trefor Granite Quarry in Wales, adding to the tradition and uniqueness of the sport. These stones are heavy buggers, weighing in at 42 pounds to gracefully glide with speed down the ice. Two teams compete against one another with four players on each team. The ice sheet is approximately 145 feet long, with a 12-foot wide target on either end that looks like a bullseye and is termed the “house.” The objective is to cast the stone down the ice sheet and into the house for points. Beyond the house are starting blocks to propel off of and these are called “hacks.” Recreational clubs will play eight “ends,” or rounds,
16
where eight stones are cast by each team, two stones per player. The first player to throw their stone is termed the “lead,” followed by the “second,” then the “vice-skip”, and finally the “skip,” who also is the team leader and directs the shots for the team at the other end of the ice. A unique characteristic of curling is its self-governance. Curlers are expected to call fouls on themselves when there is a violation and the honor system is highly valued. “Curling is competitive, but it’s one of the few sports where sportsmanship is of primary importance. Etiquette is a huge part of the game,” says

experienced curler and board member, Laura Crawford. This is one of the many aspects that set curling apart from other sports. The mutual respect, tradition and camaraderie keep players coming back. For example, at the beginning of the match, teams will always greet each other by exchanging the words “good curling,” and a handshake with each opponent. At the end of the match, the winning team traditionally buys the losing team a round of libations and they all socialize together for what they call “broom stacking.” In the McCall area, this is a welcome option for active residents, especially close to the Winter Solstice when the sun goes down by 4:45 p.m. The curling league season begins in early December and runs through the end of February. Their annual bonspiel tournament, called “Rocktoberspiel,” occurs in October where teams travel from all-over the country to play here in McCall. In addition, the club will offer private lessons for those wanting to learn to curl for a fun family reunion activity or a great team-building exercise for a business or group. If you would like more information or to contact the McCall Curling Club, please visit their website: mccallcurling.com.

Featuring recipes from the Blue Moon Yurt
MULLED WINE
SESAME MARINATED ASPARAGUS
The delicious smell of mulling spices hits you the minute you step into the Yurt as the mulled wine simmers over the wood-burning stove. This delicious cocktail is perfect for a winter evening at the Yurt or in your own home. We’ve made an easy modification to the Blue Moon’s recipe so you can serve up some mulled wine the easy way… from your slow cooker!
This delicious dish is a staple at the Yurt. Served during the appetizer course, guests can munch on this crisp, flavorful veggie while mingling with fellow diners. This asparagus has become a fan favorite for Yurt-goers and we are sure this recipe will be a hit at home, too!
Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1 bottle red wine (we like to use cabernet) 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup brandy (optional) 2 cinnamon sticks 1 tsp whole allspice berries 4 star anise 1/2 tsp whole cloves 5 whole cardamom pods, lightly crushed with the back of a spoon to expose the seeds 1/2 vanilla bean, slit down the center (or 1/2 tsp vanilla extract) a good grating of fresh nutmeg (about 1/4 tsp) 4 clementines, juiced 4 clementines, cut in half
Directions: Put the water and sugar in the crock pot and turn on high. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Juice 4 of the clementines and add juice to the pot. Add the rest of the ingredients and heat until the wine just gets to a simmer. Then turn the dial to the ‘keep warm’ setting and let it sit for about 30 minutes before serving. Garnish each glass with a cinnamon stick and a star anise. Add a sprig of rosemary for a holiday twist!
18
Ingredients: • • • •
Asparagus, 1 bunch 2 1/4 T. Soy 2 T. Rice Wine Vinegar (Seasoned) 1 T. Dark Sesame Oil
• 1 tsp Sugar • Salt, to taste • Black & White Sesame Seeds, garnish
Directions: Marinade: add the soy, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil and sugar in a bowl. Stir until sugar is dissolved. (You can do this while you’re blanching the asparagus.) Slowly add salt to taste, a pinch at a time. The salt will bring out the depth of the flavors. Snap ends of asparagus. Combine ice and cold water in a bowl and set aside. Heat water in a saucepan until it boils. Blanch asparagus in boiling water in single layered batches until asparagus turns bright green and the spear just begins to go limp. The asparagus should have a little crunch to it. Immediately place in ice water bowl to keep asparagus from over cooking. Continue the process until all the asparagus is cooked and cooled down. Drain asparagus and put in a large zip lock bag. Pour marinade into the bag and coat asparagus. Marinate for 3 to 4 hours. Put in the frig and flip bag several times, whenever you think about it. To serve, pull asparagus out of the marinade and arrange on a platter. Sprinkle with black and white sesame seeds and watch your friends chow down!

It is hard to miss this large building in downtown McCall. The Manchester Ice and Event Center is a cornerstone in the community offering ice skating, hockey leagues, curling, stunning ice shows, and is home to the Idaho Junior Steelheads. All of these activities make the rink a gathering place for the whole family. “This rink is truly a special place,” John Barth, General Manager says. “It has been an unbelievable gift to our community.” Hudson, age 6, loves playing hockey at the rink. “I run hot, so I am always really hot in the winter and I like the ice rink because it is cold inside and it cools me down.” Having started skating when he was just 2 years old, Hudson has had a lot of time on the ice. He says he first

Hockey is a big deal in McCall. League and club play are active just about all year with drop-in and stick-and-puck games weekly. For beginners, the rink offers Hockey 101 and Hockey 102 classes. Plus, from September through March, the Manchester Ice Center is home to the Idaho Junior Steelheads. These fast-paced, hardhitting hockey games are a great way to spend an evening in McCall cheering on the hometown team. Along with hockey, ice skating is a huge sport at the rink. For those after the challenge of figure skating, the ice rink offers a wide range of instruction to get you started. Enroll in the official United States Figure Skating Association “Learn to Skate Basic Skills Program” or take a private or group lesson. Looking for a quick skate session without the instruction? started skating with his parents, but wanted to try it on his own pretty quickly. “The first time I skated I fell down and cried,” he explains. “The second time I skated for about one minute and then I fell down and cried again. Then my mom and dad got me hockey pads.” And the rest, as they say, is history.

matter what you do at the rink, it is always a good time. “I like hanging out with all of the kids at the rink,” says Hudson. “It is really fun.” In addition to daily skating, the ice rink also produces the fabulous “McCall Starz on Ice” show. Lori Benton, World Professional Figure Skating Champion, choreographs this stunning show for the McCall Winter Carnival each year. McCall Starz on Ice brings world class skaters to McCall accompanied by the McCall Figure Skating Club which includes local skaters from the area. “I love doing one-foot glides,” says Gemma, age 4. But her favorite part about performing? “My pretty dress.” Continued page 26

2. The Activity Barn
Have you ever wanted to fly? The Activity Barn comes pretty darn close to giving you the sensation. “It is great when you get a good boost down the hill,” says Juliette, www.activitybarn.com age 12. With a send-off from the staff at the top, speed down the snow packed chutes for an exhilarating experience like no other.
The Activity Barn is a perfect stop for any family. Pick out your tube at the bottom of the hill then jump on the new “magic carpet” type lift for a ride to the top. “Before the new lift was added you had to stand in line and hook your tube on,” says Benjamin, age 16. “Now you can just step on the conveyor.” His sister McKinley, age 14 agrees. “It is more efficient!” That means less time getting to the top and more time sliding down the hill. Any tuber age two or older is welcome on the lift. Kids under 6 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
the hill,” says Benjamin. “Either spinning or linked together with your friends.” As easy as snow tubing is, remember to dress for the weather! Waterproof clothing, winter boots, gloves and a hat will help keep the troops dry and warm. Conditions can change quickly, especially when the sun goes down. If you need a place to warm your toes, head to the yurt. There you can also pick up a quick snack or sip on some hot chocolate. When the sun goes down, the fun doesn’t stop. The Activity Barn is lit for night tubing as late as 8 pm on Friday and Saturday evenings. There are also extended hours for holidays and Winter Carnival so you can get in some continuous downhill action. Tickets are $5 for a single ride, $15–$18 for a two-hour session or $75 for a season pass. Continued page 28
Once at the top, take in the views and stare down the massive 800 foot long chutes. Each season, up to 6 chutes are available for guests with varying degrees of slope and speed. The tubes are like big inflatable cushions for your ride down. The wonderful staff at the Activity Barn will help make sure you’re all set for the 85 foot drop. “Spinning is the best way to go down

The Little Ski Hill is a McCall institution. The local ski area first opened in 1937 and encompasses 80 acres of skiable terrain with 405 vertical feet. Originally, the lift was a large toboggan sled that carried skiers uphill. Today, the toboggan has been replaced by a T-bar that is famous in these parts…loading onto the T-bar is a rite of passage for kids and adults alike! “It is easier with two people,” says Molly, age 8. Her sister Murphy, age 5, shares her advice for getting on the T-bar, “When the bar comes, you try to sit on it.” But even these seasoned experts sometimes lose their balance. “I still fall off sometimes,” laughs Molly. Once at the top, kids have a ton of action-packed options to get to the bottom of the mountain. Groomed trails cover the face of the hill while a terrain park and tree skiing keep things interesting. “I like downhill skiing because you can go fast,” says Molly, “but I also like the jumps and the dropoff.” Will, age 10, agrees. “My favorite part is ‘the drop. It is like a powdered run and it is sort of hidden.” So how did Will get up the

courage to ski “the drop?” “I do a lot of crazy things without really thinking about it which is probably bad ‘cause it will get me places I don’t want to be.” Luckily, this has yet to get Will into trouble on the ski hill. “Lately I have been coming off of [the drop] and doing front grabs and back grabs.” These local ski demons all honed their skills by participating in the After School Program. This learn-toski and snowboard program runs for seven weeks in January and February. Students from McCall, Donnelly and New Meadows are bussed to the Little Ski Hill after school where they ski with high school instructors. On average, 140 students participate in the weekday program and 20 participate in the Saturday program.

and snowboard opportunities together and you get one dynamic recreational area. “We are really excited to see a revival of the Little Ski Hill since the early 2000s,” says Colby Nielson, General Manager. “The growing support is allowing us to make improvements to the facility and work on some new, big projects in the coming years.”

After a bit of practice, the Little Ski Hill is a perfect place for kids to cut loose. While every child is required to ski or snowboard with a buddy, they don’t have to wait around for mom and dad. “I like being able to go and ski without my mom,” says Murphy. “But I usually beat her to the lodge because the cookies there are my favorite.”

Even during the best family vacation, kids and parents can require some time away from one another. After a day on the slopes, PLAYLive is just the ticket. “We would rather play games here than at home ‘cause here we can all play together!” Triplets Jarom, Isaac, and Quentin, age 9, give PLAYLive high praise. Younger brother Caleb, age 5, agrees, but adds with a shrug, “I usually lose because I am the youngest, but it is still fun.” PLAYLive is a social gaming lounge featuring the newest video games available to play on high-end consoles. Each station is linked so players can compete against friends or other gamers in the lounge. “Our favorite game is Rocket League,” says Quentin. “There is a tournament where you can play online against lots of people any time you want.” Along with online tournaments, PLAYLive also hosts in-store tournaments each month and will set up a mini-tournament for a walk-in group if desired. For those new to the gaming scene, Isaac recommends Lego Dimensions. “It is really easy to play and you don’t get frustrated easily,” he says. “Instructions are on the TV so you can learn as you play.” This doesn’t mean, however, that the brothers have confidence in their parents’ video game skills. “We keep having to teach them because they one, two, three forget,” says Caleb, snapping his fingers on the count of three.

Perhaps that is the beauty of PLAYLive. The friendly staff is happy to entertain the kids while mom and dad enjoy a nice dinner out. “Kids would definitely rather spend an evening at PLAYLive than at a fancy restaurant,” Jennifer Campbell, PLAYLive owner says. “Typically, kids 11 or older can stay without a parent; however, we are definitely willing to work with you if you are after a date night!” Along with video games, PLAYLive offers movies and television shows in the lounge. Pair gaming and movies for a unique birthday party – and even order pizza to the store! Once you purchase game time, it never expires.

The amazing team at the Payette Avalanche Center has a pretty tall order. Their mission is to foster awareness and promote safe backcountry travel by sharing crucial avalanche information. One of only 14 such Centers in the nation, the PAC provides an invaluable service to the McCall area. We sat down with Kent May, a forecaster for the PAC, to get the inside scoop on this great organization.
1. First of all, what is the Payette Avalanche Center? The Payette Avalanche Center is technically a Type 2 Avalanche Center for the U.S. Forest Service; however, we have been running as a Type 1 Center for the last three years. This means that we issue a forecast seven days a week by 7am from when the first snow sticks in November until the snow melts in April. The daily forecasts are a tool for the recreating public to understand avalanche conditions, weather, and recent snowfall and decide where and when to go. We do all of the work for you!

To determine current conditions, we head out on snowmobiles and skis every day to test different aspects (i.e. north slope, west slope, etc.) and elevation bands. By digging a snow pit and conducting stress tests on columns of snow, we are able to see where the snowpack fails and translate that into the advisory spectrum.
The only salon in McCall with a certified clean air filtration system
But aside from the actual testing, we also observe. This is probably the easiest thing we do! Having a background in snow science, ski patrol and avalanche conditions, all three forecasters can go out and recognize avalanche factors. It doesn’t take a test to see that the wind is blowing from the west and loading the east slopes or to observe a natural avalanche in progress. This is valuable information we are then able to incorporate in our daily advisories.

3. How do you read the daily advisory? While we do get into the nerdy dialogue at the bottom of the forecast, the easy to decipher nuts and bolts of the forecast is at the top of the page. Look for the primary avalanche danger rating: low, moderate, considerable or extreme. Next to that will be an “avalanche danger rose” which shows the different aspect and elevation ratings (i.e. if the east facing slopes are green and the west facing slopes are red, avoid the west facing slopes). The “Bottom Line” provides a brief overview of the current conditions followed by weather information, recent observations, and avalanche problems to be aware of.

4. How can I learn more about avalanche safety? A big part of what we do is outreach in the community. One of our programs, “Know Before You Go” is part of a national program aimed at middle school kids. Each winter we go into the schools and talk about snow science and avalanche training to educate kids early. For adults, we have avalanche awareness classes, including a two-day training and a special “diva” class for women only, as well as rescue clinics. We did a total of 17 educational events last season—our website and Facebook page will have information on the events planned for this winter. In addition to event listings, the PAC website has several educational links and video resources if you want to brush up at home. Regardless of what activity you are doing, we recommend that anyone planning over-the-snow travel have a beacon, shovel and probe at all times. I like to say that “bad things can happen in low consequence terrain.” If you are headed out to ski, snowshoe or snowmobile, carry the right equipment!

5. How is the Payette Avalanche Center funded? We are actually one of the only Forest Service programs that rely on a non-profit to keep us in business. A small portion of our budget comes from federal funding and the rest is through grants and fundraising efforts. Grant dollars are something we apply for each year and that money is directly sourced from the snowmobile sticker program – so thank you to everyone who plays by the rules and purchases a sticker! In addition, the Friends of the Payette Avalanche Center supplements our budget with fundraising. We are always looking for more people to get involved either as a volunteer, board member, or with fundraising outreach. Give us a call and get involved!

cabin fever
GETTING CREATIVE TO KEEP THOSE WINTER BLUES AT BAY
If Jack Torrance from The Shining had been able to take a painting class from the McCall Arts and Humanities Council’s Cabin Fever Series, the movie may have turned out VERY differently. While perhaps not as extreme as the cabin fever insanity depicted in this classic Stanley Kubrick film, we can all get a little stir-crazy in the winter. The solution? Paint, draw, design, cook, create, dance and learn! The Cabin Fever Series started in 2009 with 12 classes as a response to the community’s desire for adult programming in the winter months. Today, the annual winter series offers close to 40 classes starting in early January and running through April. Tracey Kindall, Executive Director of the McCall Arts and Humanities Council, says that each year, Cabin Fever tries to strike a balance between arts and humanities programming. Past events have included learning how to dye fiber with snow, watercolor painting for beginners, making leather wrap bracelets, learning to use herbal teas and essential oils for winter wellness, wine 101, meditation, book discussion series, educational lectures, writing workshops, “paint and sip” evenings, and the ever-popular cooking classes with local chefs. “The crown jewel of Cabin Fever is our annual Heritage Night at Shore Lodge,” says Kindall. This mid-season event is a special evening dedicated to providing an opportunity to share stories and experiences uniquely related to our heritage. Past presentations have focused on the Nez Perce tribe, Finnish culture and log construction, a panel of local elders swapping stories and histories, and in 2015 a presentation by Kathy Deinhardt Hill on her book “Hanged – A History of Idaho’s Executions.” “Cabin Fever works so well because of the great partnerships we have with artists, instructors, venues and participants,” Kindall says. “We are lucky because we have so many people who are really talented and are interested in spending time in McCall so we get really high quality instruction for a fraction of the cost we should really be paying,” Kindall says. On top of that, most of the class ideas come from participant feedback. All of this feeds into a network of opportunity that keeps Cabin Fever flourishing each year.

While some lectures and presentations are free of charge or have only a suggested donation, most events do have a registration cost that covers the instructor and supplies. “We try to keep program fees low and also offer a scholarship fund for those interested in classes that they may not be able to afford.” Kindall says the appeal of the Cabin Fever Series is that “it solves the isolation problem in the winter and helps bring people together to socialize and learn – some events even turn into little parties.” Just what we all need to beat the winter blues! Because remember…“all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Don’t be like Jack. Prevent cabin fever and take an art class!

Rentals are available for just about any activity you have in mind. Photo courtesy Visit Idaho
THRILLING WHITEWATER Idaho is well-known as the Whitewater State and there is certainly no shortage of rapids to satisfy thrill-seekers in the McCall area. From the laid back Cabarton Stretch to thrilling multi-day trips on the Main Salmon through the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, we have the whitewater you are looking for! GEAR UP FOR MOUNTAIN BIKING The McCall area is ripe with miles of single and double track trails for all abilities and has been designated as a Silver Ride Center by the International Mountain Biking Association. Hitch a ride to the top with lift serviced mountain biking at Brundage Mountain Resort and Tamarack Resort or take advantage of the shuttle service at Jug Mountain Ranch. If you would rather take the trail less traveled, stop by mccallchamber.org and view our Mountain Biking itinerary with fresh ideas for easy, intermediate, and expert rides around the region. MUSIC Summer turns up the heat on the mountain music scene. Catch weekly music everywhere from the Narrows at Shore Lodge to the Anchor. Plan to hit up annual events including the Summer Music Festival at Roseberry, SummerFest, and the Huckleberry Jam, or catch a summer music series session at Tamarack Resort and Jug Mountain Ranch. DINING The patio is open! One of our favorite things about warm sunny days in McCall is dining al fresco and sampling the delicious fare of our local restaurants, bistros, and pubs. Just about every eatery has a place to take advantage of the sunshine or pick up something to go and picnic at Legacy Park along the shores of Payette Lake. Photo courtesy Rupert’s at Hotel McCall

Meet the couple: Justin and Cole were married at Blackhawk on the River in McCall, surrounded by their closest friends and family. Their shared love for the outdoors, the mountains and river were represented in their breath-taking, rustic elegant wedding, featuring hand-crafted farm house tables, s’mores by the focal fire pit, a three-tier cake from local Stacey Cakes and dancing under the beautiful McCall starlit sky. It was a dream come true for these newlyweds as McCall is a beloved second home for their family.
UNCROWDED. UNSPOILED. UNBELIEVABLE.
