ACTIVITY GUIDE Get outside and enjoy the fresh mountain air
Wide open spaces, crystal clear water and scenery for days. It is easy to get out and find solitude in the mountains around McCall. A few things to keep in mind as you explore the great outdoors to RECREATE RESPONSIBLY: • Do not engage in outdoor recreation if you’re sick, stay home instead. • If a trailhead or boat ramp is congested, consider finding another or going during off-peak hours. • When recreating outdoors, maintain appropriate social distancing, which is defined as six feet or more from others. • Practice “Leave No Trace” practices and pack out what you pack in.
HIKING Hiking is hands down one of the most popular activities in McCall. There is a huge variety of trails to explore around McCall. Only have an hour? No problem, we have a trail for that. Want to turn a hike into a day-long adventure? We have that covered, too. And the scenery is epic no matter which trail you take.
From blooming wildflower fields to pristine highmountain lakes, the hikes around McCall take you through some of the most stunning scenery imaginable. Get started with some of our favorite trails:
Goose Creek Falls (Easy) (Trail #354) In a little over a mile, this trail takes hikers to Goose Creek and the waterfall. The first portion of the trail goes steadily downhill until it reaches Goose Creek Bridge and is not recommended for small children. Unlike most trails which gain elevation, Goose Creek Falls Trail starts at 5760’ and drops to 5080’.
Twin Lakes (Easy) (Trail #165) This trail involves a 1-mile walk up to the Twin Lakes. It climbs steadily but not steeply for an elevation gain of about 400 feet. Fishing is good, however the lake is subject to drawdown at the dam so you will want to go early in the season. It’s a fun place to take the kids for a picnic.
Hazard Lakes (Easy) (Trail #169) There are three Hazard Lakes: Hazard Lake, Upper Hazard Lake and Big Hazard Lake. All three are popular fishing lakes. The one-half mile walk to Big Hazard Lake is flat and suitable for most people. The trail to Upper Hazard Lake is a bit more strenuous, covering 2 miles, and gains about 348’ in elevation, starting at 7080’ and ending at 7400’. The hike to Upper Hazard Lake is a perfect hike for children and seniors because of its relatively flat terrain.
Twenty Mile (Moderate)
(Trail #085) This trail winds for six miles through the burn of the 1994 Corral/ Blackwell fires and takes hikers to the Twentymile Lakes. The first three miles of the trail are relatively flat, then climbs steeply for the last three miles.
Louie Lake & Jughandle Mountain (Moderate) Designated as a trophy lake, Louie Lake is backdropped by the magnificent cliffs of Jughandle Mountain. The trail in to the lake is 2 miles long, and is a steady uphill hike. To make a loop, continue onto the Jughandle trail over to Boulder Lake. The loop is 6.8 miles long and passes 3 lakes: Louie, Boulder and Boulder Reservoir.
Duck Lake & Hum Lake (Moderate)
(Trail #085 and Trail #082) Duck Lake is a short hike of approximately 2 miles round trip. It has little elevation gain and makes an ideal hike for most ages and abilities. Hum Lake trail takes off from Duck Lake and is a three-mile one-way hike with about a mile of steep grade. It takes hikers over a ridge, into a meadow and to the glacial Hum Lake.
Box Lake (Moderate) (Trail #110) The starting elevation is 5680’ with an elevation gain of 1863’ and a 343’ drop from a ridge to the lake. This trail is 3.5 miles long and suggested as an overnight hike for many people especially if you plan on fishing and swimming. The trail switchbacks 800 feet in the first mile and continues to be steep for another mile.
family-friendly stand out
Boulder Lake
There is no end to the options when it comes to great hiking around the greater McCall area, but this hike is a top pick for families because of its easy access and long list of fun ‘distractions’. The hike is labeled as moderate in some hiking books, but many families find it suitable for all but the smallest kids. The hike to the lake is about two miles long with an elevation gain of about 700 feet. The trail climbs slowly until just before the lake where you follow a few steep switchbacks among the rocks. This quick scramble adds to the fun; the stunning alpine lake reveals its beautiful self at the top. Once there, your family can enjoy inspiring views as well as fishing, swimming or poking around in search of small waterfalls, wildflowers, huckleberries and forest critters of all shapes and sizes. Pro tips: bring a picnic lunch and a couple of fishing poles. Boulder Lake is open to fishing year-round, limit is six fish per angler. Fishing rules are available where fishing licenses are sold and on-line through Idaho Fish & Game.
mountain biking Mountain biking in the McCall area has been quietly evolving. While the rugged backcountry trails that put us on the map are still prime, the addition of purpose-built trails is changing the landscape. practice makes perfect
JUG MOUNTAIN RANCH
Test your mettle and practice your technique on one of the many skills parks. Find pump tracks in downtown McCall near the Harshman Skate Park and at Bear Basin. Jug Mountain Ranch and Tamarack Resort also offer skills parks with smaller progressive features like tabletops, berms, rock gardens and skinny bridges.
Berm ‘N Ernie is a 1-mile flow trail with personality. A mixture of rock sections, jumps and big berms keeps you on your toes while descending effortlessly from the ranch’s highest point.
skills parks
With more than 500 miles of trails in the greater McCall area, there is certainly no shortage of options. But where do you start? First, we highly recommend picking up the CIMBA trail map then hit the trail with one of these spectacular rides:
Payette Lake Trail Intermediate/Advanced
There are several access points to ride the Payette Lake Trail’s single track along the West side of the Payette Lake. Start from the Payette Rim Trail parking lot off of Brundage Lookout Road (Forest Service Road #451 just 2 miles outside of McCall) or at the Brush Creek Parking Lot off of Warren Wagon Road. From either starting point, enjoy views of Payette Lake and features including berms, drops, rock faces and rock gardens.
BRUNDAGE MOUNTAIN RESORT GREENHORN & ELK (BEGINNER)
Greenhorn is a leisurely out-and-back lollipop with nominal elevation change, some great berm turns and fun rollers as an introduction to riding single track. Greenhorn also connects to Thorn Creek and Hammerhead for a longer ride. For one step up, head to Elk trail, a six-mile downhill cruise with scenic vistas, aspen groves, wildflower meadows and creek crossings.
GROWLER (INTERMEDIATE) This two-way trail can be accessed either from the base of the mountain and provide a heart-pumping climb to the top or a switchback ride down from the Lakeview Vista connection.
BERM N’ ERNIE (INTERMEDIATE)
DOUBLE SHOT (EXPERT) One and a half miles of pure downhill bliss. A mixture of rocks, wood features, tables and tacky berms create the perfect trail to get your flow on. The lower section of this trail is brand new and expands this trail’s appeal with big rock rolls and a road gap.
TAMARACK RESORT
SUPER G (INTERMEDIATE) With its sweeping turns and g-force producing corners, Super G is a must-ride at Tamarack Resort. The trail is 2.5 miles and features a stunning viewpoint of the lake below about halfway down the mountain.
SMOKEJUMPER (ADVANCED) Named after the fearless men and women who jump out of planes to fight wildfires, Smokejumper gives you a shot of adrenaline as you traverse 1.5 miles of features including drops and jumps.
BEAR BASIN
SLEEPY HOLLOW (BEGINNER) A great little side trail off of the main drag that can be tied together with the main access route for a nice loop. Sleepy Hollow winds through a dense wooded area with an easy grade, some twists and turns and a few fun bridge and rock features to keep it interesting.
BLUE RIDGE LOOP (INTERMEDIATE) With twists and turns, rocks and roots and an optional skinny bridge to keep things interesting, Blue Ridge Loop is a great intermediate single track trail.

the legend of sharlie Everyone loves a good legend and we have a great one right here in McCall, Idaho with “Sharlie,” our resident Lake Monster... Big Payette Lake is named after Francois Payette, a French Canadian fur trapper who roamed the central Idaho mountains during the early years of the 19th century (1800’s). The natural lake is over 5,000 glacier-carved acres of clean, still water. At its deepest and darkest point, near the Northwest shore, the lake is 392 ft deep. The Native Americans who once spent summers in Long Valley were said to fear the calm seemingly bottomless waters of the lake, telling stories of an evil spirit that lurked in its hidden depths. The first documented sighting of something out of the ordinary was by a railroad logging crew. In 1920, while cutting railroad ties near the upper end of the lake, workers thought they saw a huge log floating in the frigid water. The log began to move forward. Then the log began to undulate. Then the ‘log’ created its own wake as it rapidly left the area. In 1944, a group of people near the Narrows saw a creature, describing it as, “At least 35 feet long, with a dinosaur-type head, pronounced jaw, humps like a camel, and shell-like skin.” This dramatic account propelled the story into the national headlines, and serpent hunters began to frequent the tranquil area to snap a photo of the creature or even capture it outright. An article published in the nationally distributed Times Magazine in August of 1944, reported that 30 people had seen the periscope-shaped head of the creature they called “Slimy Slim” since July 2 of that year. In 1946, twenty people in a group reported seeing the creature. Dr. G.A. Taylor, of Nampa, stated that it appeared to be 40 feet long and seemed to keep diving down into the watery depths. He also said that it left a wake like a small motor boat. By 1954, many people had reported sightings of Slimy Slim, and residents decided their local monster needed a better name. A. Boone McCallum, editor of the Star News, held a national contest, and the winning entry was submitted by LeIsle Hennefer Tury, of Springfield Virginia. In her letter to the Star, she wrote, “Why don’t you call him Sharlie?—you know, like ‘Vas you der, Sharlie?” This was a reference to a one-liner used by Jack Pearl in a popular radio show. Regular sightings of Sharlie have been reported over the years, but no official evidence of Sharlie’s existence has been offered up. Regardless, the residents of McCall need no proof to know she (yes, Sharlie is a she) is real. Her legend continues to grow, adding imagination and mystery to the area folklore, as an unofficial symbol of McCall.
Have you been lucky enough to see Sharlie? Story of Sharlie courtesy Barbara Nokes Kwader with the Nelle Tobias Research Center in Roseberry.
paddling When it comes to lake kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding, locals know that Payette Lake plays second fiddle to the North Fork of the Payette River. This lazy stretch of river was made for meandering. Flanked by soaring pine trees and lush wetlands, it is not uncommon to see deer, eagles, fox, or even the occasional moose on the bank.
THE MEANDERS
PAYETTE LAKE: duck bay to downtown
upper north fork of the payette river Payette Lake is a scenic show-stopper. This deep alpine lake right in the heart of downtown McCall is perfect for summer boating, sailing, jet skiing, and swimming. When it comes to kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding, however, locals know that Payette Lake plays second fiddle to the North Fork of the Payette River. This lazy stretch of river was made for meandering. Flanked by soaring pine trees and lush wetlands, it is not uncommon to see deer, eagles, fox, or even the occasional moose on the bank. Beneath the surface, schools of fish dart back and forth under your paddles in the crystal clear water. Gliding down the river, the hustle and bustle of the day fades away. With only the scenic splendor to distract you, it is a perfect setting to catch up on some quality family time. Trust us; laughter just seems to sound better when it carries over the water! Aside from meeting a few fellow paddlers along the way, there is plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy the river. We recommend launching at the North Beach boat ramp. If you need to rent equipment, Backwoods Adventures is on hand to help you with canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards (lifejackets included). In the heat of summer, the launch area can be a bit congested, so for the best experience, set out up river. The farther you go, the fewer people you will see. Remember to pack some snacks or a picnic lunch. There are lots of great beaches to stop at along the way!
Pro Tip: Make a reservation for rental equipment in advance. Backwoods Adventures, Gravity Sports, Home Town Sports, and the McCall Sports Exchange all offer summer water rentals.
payette RIVER BASIN WATER TRAILS The Payette River Basin covers over 3,000 square miles and includes the Deadwood River, the South, Middle, and North Forks of the Payette River, the main Payette River, and tributaries, lakes and reservoirs. What is a water trail? Water trails are boat routes suitable for canoes, rafts, paddleboards, kayaks, and motorized watercraft. Like pedestrian, equestrian and bicycle trails, water trails are recreational corridors between destinations.
Payette Lake, Duck Bay to downtown: Sometimes you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, and sometimes, you want to be part of it. You can paddle this 4-mile stretch in either direction, but here’s why you should consider north to south. You start at a boat launch in Ponderosa State Park’s placid Duck Bay, a scenic spot midway up the peninsula that makes up most of the park. You don’t have to go all the way to Duck Bay because there are several access spots so you can tailor your float to your time and energy. After starting in Duck Bay, you paddle along the park’s timbered shoreline, which is lightly developed, mostly with paved paths and campsites. If it’s a weekend or peak summer, don’t expect perfectly smooth water. The lake is popular for powerboating and personal watercraft. There’s a 300-foot, no-wake zone around the shoreline, but you may still encounter some rolling water. As you progress, the shoreline gets more developed, with docks, homes, marinas, condos, etc. But take all that as a benefit. Want to stop for a beer or other cold beverage? Swing by Mile High Marina near Legacy Park, or paddle onto the sandy beach and walk to a downtown restaurant for lunch or dinner (or breakfast if you’re one of those weird early risers). Most of all, just bask in the glory of a McCall summer day. It’s an experience that never gets old.
CITY OF CASCADE FLOAT Sometimes, you don’t want to overthink it, you want to enjoy a relaxing float on a river, and this section of the North Fork is a prime candidate. It’s 2.5 miles from bridge to bridge with a gentle current carrying you along. There’s a path along most of this route, which makes a bike shuttle a hassle-free option. There’s also a commercial shuttle available during summer. Start your float below the dam where the Idaho 55 bridge crosses the river on the north end of Cascade. You can take nearly any watercraft that’s suitable for moving water, including inner tubes. Try not to miss the second bridge downstream (spoiler alert: you can’t). That’s the take-out. So why would this short, mostly flat float strike your fancy? It’s relaxing and casual. If you want to add a quick thrill, float through the waves at Kelly’s Whitewater Park, which has a series of man-made rapids and waves that are easy to navigate, or avoid by portaging. Have fun splashing in the waves? Get out, hike upstream on the path and do them again. Heck, do it as many times as you want. Not like you have hours of floating ahead of you, more like minutes. When you get to the take-out at the bridge, you’re within walking distance of cold drinks, burgers and other summer staples. This is what a casual float is all about, maximizing the fun on a warm summer day while minimizing the logistics.

golf You don’t have to be an avid golfer to appreciate the natural splendor of our five area courses. Teeing off over a green meadow with a snowcapped mountain at your back may not automatically improve your handicap, but it will improve your mood!
top 5 scenic golf holes Fairways flanked by towering pines, perfectly manicured greens overlooking the crystal-clear water, and tee boxes that offer dramatic views of the mountains beyond are just a few of the striking scenes that await. Each golf course has its own appeal, but we rounded up some of our favorite holes that showcase both dramatic scenery and challenging play. Explore our favorites (in no particular order – let’s face it…they are all amazing!):
Jug Mountain Ranch 16th hole
Set at the base of Jughandle Mountain, the 16th hole at Jug Mountain Ranch is a long par 5, dogleg right. The tee shot is played uphill and over natural wetlands with a perfect view of Jughandle Mountain. Once on the fairway, thick groves of trees line each side of the hole, while Boulder Creek crosses the narrowing fairway near the green.
cascade golf course 6th hole
Tucked next to Lake Cascade, this 9-hole course may just be the most scenic in the area. Each hole offers beautiful views of the lake, but we love #6 for its exciting tee shot over the water. Starting on a bluff above this par 4, a solid drive is required to carry the water. Women can play the forward tee, but we recommend taking a shot at playing from the tips on this hole!
mccall golf club aspen #1
With 27 holes to choose from, finding a favorite at McCall Golf Club is a tough choice, but Aspen #1 is a beauty. The 370 yard par 4 has a tree lined fairway with a stunning view of Brundage Mountain and water features to the left of the fairway and green, which was rebuilt in 2016. If you are lucky, you may also see some of the resident deer wander through your tee shot adding to both challenge and aesthetic appeal to Aspen #1.
meadowcreek golf course 13th hole
Located at the 45th parallel in New Meadows, this 6,696 yard course offers a thrilling round of golf. With par 4s and 5s dominating this course, we love hole 13 for its short and sweet challenge. Precision is the name of the game with a tee shot over natural wetlands. Your reward? Expansive views of the golf course and mountains beyond. You may even catch a glimpse of Brundage Mountain in the distance.
whitetail club 16th hole
This private course has a dual personality. Half of the holes wind through mature pines while the other half take advantage of wide open views. Hole 16 is the latter. This par 3 offers plenty of challenge with a tee shot over the water paired with the scenic beauty of a stream that crosses the hole and flows smoothly into a large pond. Don’t be fooled by the serene setting. While the water features add ambiance, they can be hazards to your score.

Please note: tours of the museum are suspended for summer 2020, however the outdoor grounds and buildings are free to explore.
6. Rotary Park - Legend of Sharlie (335 W Lake Street)

4. Veteran’s Park (Corner of Lenora and N 3rd Street)
Across the street, at Community Park, you’ll find the Veteran’s Memorial. Follow the pathway to the memorial where McCall’s service members and military veterans are honored.
EXTEND YOUR ROUTE! 2 miles (about 15 minutes)
Ride southwest toward Mather Road and turn right to stay on Mather Road. Turn right onto N Mission Street, left onto Stibnite Street E, left onto the North Valley Rail Trail then right onto Archer Avenue. Turn left onto Mission Street Smokejumper Base will be on the left.
McCall Smokejumper Base (605 Mission Street) On a roll and feel like pedaling some more? Make your way down to the McCall Smokejumper Base. The Smokejumper Base in McCall was established in 1943 as a station for “smokejumpers”. Smokejumpers are specialized firefighters who parachute into forest fire sites. The current facility was built in 1988 and is home to the Smokejumpers who protect forests throughout the Western US and Alaska, including the seven national forests surrounding McCall. *Tours are not currently available.
ART IN THE CITY 4 miles The natural beauty of McCall is made even more majestic with a series of public art installations throughout the city. From historical legacies like the Civilian Conservation Corps memorial statue to works by the budding future artists of McCall like the Youth Art Installation on Railroad Avenue, this collection of public art is diverse, beautiful, and speaks to the spirit of the city. Follow the Art in the City self-guided bike tour to enjoy 9 of these delightful works of art.
1. “Shortcut” (McCall Public Library) This jovial bunch of children welcomes visitors to the McCall Public Library and is the perfect first stop on our public art tour. Created by artist Jane Dedecker, the staff at the Library have been known to add beach balls, winter scarves, and school books to the children to celebrate the seasons.
2. Youth Art Installation (Railroad Ave.) Even retaining walls in McCall are decorated to the nines! This installation was created by art students from the McCall-Donnelly High School Advanced Art Class and provides a welcome pop of color for drivers, pedestrians, and bikers along Railroad Avenue.
3. “Taking Flight” (Corner of Pine and Railroad) Artist Alisa Looney created this sculpture to represent our deep connection with nature, open skies, and freeflowing rivers. The bright blue steel installation joins a bird taking flight with a person staying grounded, all in a location that takes advantage of beautiful Payette Lake in the background!
4. Big Green Chair (NE corner of Pine St. and Roosevelt Ave.)
This hidden gem is a perfect place to snap a family photo. Find it tucked away under the pines in a little popup park on the corner of Pine and Roosevelt. There are also several picnic tables here where you can stop and enjoy a snack.
5. “Mountain Goats at Play” (Roosevelt Ave.) Pull up a seat next to three colorful mountain goats in the Alpine Playhouse pedestrian plaza. Artist Matt Babcock’s bright red aluminum installation provides a fun public gathering place to soak in the sunshine. While you are there, check the Alpine Playhouse for the next performance dates!
6. “Going to School” (Brown Park) Brown Park is an idyllic place to spend an hour or two. Along with playground equipment, benches and ample green space to enjoy, this site is also where the historic McCall Mill used to be located and has a lovely shoreline path perfect for strolling.
7. “Stalactites” (Legacy Park) Legacy Park is in the center of it all and features a unique sculpture designed by Zella Bardsley that perfectly frames the view of Payette Lake and Brundage Mountain. While here, enjoy a volleyball court, picnic tables, splash fountain, and an enclosed swimming area.
8. “CCC Worker Memorial” (Central Idaho Historical Museum)
During the Great Depression, more than 25 percent of Americans were suffering from unemployment. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was part of FDR’s New Deal and put America’s young men to work protecting the nation’s natural resources. The CCC accomplished remarkable feats for the environment and agriculture and had a lasting impact on the McCall area. The CCC Worker statue is a monument to their legacy and sits on the lawn of the Central Idaho Historical Museum.
9. “Wings Over McCall” (Deinhard and Hwy 55) The last stop on our tour, but the first piece of art to welcome you into McCall! “Wings Over McCall” sits at the main intersection of Dienhard and Highway 55 against the backdrop of the McCall airport. This iconic sundial was designed by Ward Hooper.
THE SCENIC ROUTE
6.3 MILES (UP TO 17.3 with extensionS) McCall’s network of pathways give you a front row seat to some seriously beautiful views. From the golf course to Ponderosa State Park, Payette Lake to shady forests there is no shortage of natural beauty to see on a ride around town.
1.
starting point It is easy to hop on the trail at any point and make a loop of this route, but for an easy starting point, we like to start this ride on the separated paved pathway in front of Ridley’s Family Market. The path is smooth and wide and a perfect place to kick off your scenic ride.
2. Put a Spring in your Step (or Pedal) From Ridley’s, head east toward the Payette Lakes Middle School then turn north to connect to the Spring Mountain Ranch paved pathway. This delightful stretch takes you along the outskirts of the city and past thick forested areas, the McCall Golf Course and past meadows and wetlands. Pro Tip: There is a bike tuning station where the path passes Wooley Ave. in case you need to make any adjustments along the way!
Extension: Osprey Point & Narrows Overlook
The trails in the Park are dirt single track and the route to the overlook does climb in elevation, but the effort is worth the view! From the Peninsula Trail starting at the Activity Center, ride 3/4 of a mile and connect to the Huckleberry Bay Mountain Bike Trail at the Lily Marsh parking lot. This route will take you another mile to the northernmost point of the Park with two stunning overlooks.
5. lakeside cruise When you are ready to head back into town, exit Ponderosa State Park and turn right onto Ruby Street. This turns into McCall Avenue and follows the perimeter of Payette Lake. Continue on to Mill Road, and then turn right onto Pine to put you right at Legacy Park.
6. explore downtown mccall From Legacy Park, pedal through the downtown core and explore the shops and restaurants. If you are looping back to the starting point, meet up with the pathway system next to City Hall on E. Park Street. Ride past the McCall-Donnelly High School and Disc Golf Course until you reach the pathway’s intersection at Deinhard. From here, turn east (left) to get back to Ridley’s.
3. Lick Creek Road At the end of Lick Creek Road, turn north and ride into Ponderosa State Park. Take the Lakeview Trail at the park entrance to access the Peninsula Trail that follows the western shoreline of the Park. At this point, you can choose to explore the Visitors Center, Amphitheater, Activity Center, and beaches or extend your ride through the Park to see one of the most scenic overlooks in McCall.
4. ponderosa state Park Across the street, at Community Park, you’ll find the Veteran’s Memorial. Follow the pathway to the memorial where McCall’s service members and military veterans are honored.
Extension: North Valley Rail Trail If you haven’t had enough scenery for one day, extend your ride by continuing straight along the pathway at the Deinhard intersection. The route will take you to Mission street with a short section of “share the road” riding until a separated paved pathway near River Ranch begins. The paved pathway gives way to a natural surface pathway and marks the beginning of the North Valley Rail Trail. Ride the Rail Trail past the Activity Barn up to Heinrich Lane.
fishing There are not many things that compare to the feeling of hooking a fish. Watching your line suddenly disappear beneath the surface of the water with a quick tug is always thrilling. Pair that thrill with being in the middle of stunning scenery and it is no wonder that fishing is a hugely popular way to enjoy the water in and around McCall.
Crystal clear streams. Stunning alpine lakes. Family friendly ponds. So many options, so little time! Fishing is a fabulous way to experience the great outdoors and there is very little to compare to the thrill of reeling in a catch! Whether you are an expert or just starting out, a fly or bait fisherman, McCall has a wide variety of options to fit any style.
Here are 5 of our favorite fishing spots to try Goose Lake Perfect for those looking to cast from a float tube! Goose Lake is a no-wake lake 16 miles north of McCall up Goose Lake Road where you can fish for brook trout, cutthroat trout and rainbow trout. Make Grouse Campground at Goose Lake your home base and explore the network of alpine lakes if you are looking to extend your fishing trip!
Payette Lake Complex Comprised of three lakes including Payette Lake, Little Payette Lake and Upper Payette Lake. Payette Lake (5337 acres) is great fishing for cutthroat and rainbow trout. In addition, Fish and Game reports that oldgrowth lake trout planted in the 1950s can weigh more than 30 pounds. Little Payette Lake (1450 acres) has a good population of trophy small mouth bass. There is a 2-fish limit on bass and fish must be at least 20” long. No live bait may be used on this lake. Upper Payette Lake (400 acres) is stocked with rainbow trout. Brook trout can also be found in these waters.
Louie Lake Looking to bring home a fish tale? Louie Lake is where you can find trophy cutthroat trout that will make you the envy of your friends. A short, but uphill hike will take you to this pristine lake accessed from the same parking lot as the Boulder Lake trailhead. Pack in your float tube or fish from the bank – either way, we guarantee the effort is well worth it!
granite lake This small, scenic lake north of Brundage Mountain is stocked with rainbow trout. Grab your fishing tube, kayak or canoe and enjoy these smooth waters. To access Granite Lake, drive past Brundage Reservoir (also a great place to stop and fish on your way in or on your way out) to the fork at Sater Meadows. Take road 446 3 miles. Four-wheel drive is highly recommended!
Cascade Lake The largest fishing lake on our list, Cascade Lake boasts 28,300 acres of prime fishing for perch, rainbow trout, kokanee, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, and tiger muskie. Find a prime spot along 50 miles of clean, sandy shores or take your boat out to explore. Stop at Tackle Tom’s in Cascade to get the inside scoop on what’s biting!
family friendly fishing North Fork of the Payette River We love to talk about this beautiful stretch of river with easy access spots at the Deinhard Bridge, Sheep Bridge, Hat Ranch and Smylie Bridge. Find rainbow trout, brook trout, mountain whitefish, and cutthroat trout.
Browns pond This small pond offers easy access to fishing on the southern edge of the McCall airport, and is hidden from the road. Turn south on Mission and proceed 1.5 miles. Look for a large red barn and a roadside parking area on the left. Browns Pond is about a quarter-mile walk from the parking area.
northwest passage pond This pond offers easy access and convenient facilities. Within the Northwest Passage Campground, the pond is situated along the river just north of Payette Lake.
Fischer pond Tucked into a city park, Fischer Pond provides good bank fishing in the early summer and fall. The pond is the cornerstone of this cooperative community effort, with a fish viewing aquarium, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts, and picnic tables adjacent to the river walking trail. Fischer Pond is located on the east side of State Hwy 55 in Cascade along Payette River.
rowland pond A small but pretty pond in the woods close to McCall, anglers will find good bank fishing in this peaceful setting. Turn north on Davis and just past the golf course turn right/ east on Lick Creek Rd, bearing right and meandering alongside Little Payette Lake for 2.3 miles.
horsethief reservoir This reservoir has everything for a memorable fishing weekend - a beautiful lake in the trees, good fishing and camping. Camping is managed by the Treasure Valley YMCA. From State Hwy 55 north of Cascade, turn east on the Warm Lake Highway. In 6 miles turn south on Horsethief Reservoir Rd and go 3 miles to the reservoir.
off-road riding If you’re looking for a place to take out your ATV, UTV or dirt bike, look no further than McCall, Idaho. With diverse terrain and hundreds of miles of roads, it’s the ideal place to get “off the beaten path.”
From climbing to stunning vantage points like Brundage and No Business Lookout or winding along the river to Yellow Pine, a scenic back road is easy to access.
Here are 3 great rides to get you started kimberly mine Looking for a great day trip? We recommend the Kimberly Mine ride. The mine is in the Marshall Lake mining district and sits at an elevation of 7,300 feet near the head of Bear Creek on an alpine lake. The mine got its start in 1900 when “The Jewel Group” staked a claim and mined free-milling gold ore using a two-stamp mill. The mine was in operation until 1966, changing ownership many times. Today, several old buildings can be seen and the stunning scenery is well worth the trip! Access this site via Forest Service road 25150 then Forest Service road 50318. If using a GPS or topo, know that Kimberly Mine does not come up in the search, but Marshall Mountain will. Follow route 50318 a couple miles north of Marshall Mountain turn off (road 50338 – Canada Saddle Road), and the road to Kimberly Mine will be on the right.
lake for their belongings. One story tells of a piano being moved out of a second story window onto a raft. The piano was then moved to higher ground and eventually sold to the Yellow Pine school where it still resides today. For 20 years following the landslide, whole buildings floated around the lake. Roosevelt Lake is located 18 miles from Stibnite, Idaho. From the town of Stibnite, head northeast on NF-375. Cars are able to make the trip, but ATVs and UTVs also share the road and offer a faster way to access the Roosevelt Lake trail. After traveling 18 miles along NF-375 you will see a trailhead and “River of No Return Wilderness” sign. From here, the hike to Roosevelt Lake is about 1 mile. On a clear day, you can still observe the outlines of buildings and cabins beneath the water and find logs and boards floating at the edge of the lake.
While in the area, hit up another popular destination including California Lake, War Eagle Mountain and Lookout, Burgdorf Hot Springs, and Carey Dome.
Lucile to kirkwood ranch
roosevelt lake
The road descends through beautiful forest which turns to sage covered open (and steep) hillsides with gorgeous views of Hells Canyon below. The road gets narrow and a little rocky in spots as you get closer to Kirkwood so take is slow and easy. The rocky canyon walls are stunning as you approach the end of the old jeep road where you will find a gate with a sign welcoming visitors. A short and gorgeous 1/4 mile hike will take visitors to Kirkwood Ranch along a trail that follows Kirkwood Creek to the Snake River. Enjoy your lunch at the ranch and visit the museum full of historical artifacts while there.
In the early 1900s, the city of Roosevelt, located on Thunder Mountain, was part of one of the largest gold rushes in the country. In 1902, the town boasted a newspaper, two general stores, brothels, a dozen saloons and a post office where more than 5,000 area residents received their mail. One resident described Roosevelt as “a log town with one street and no society.” On May 30, 1909 volcanic ash soaked with water began slowly sliding down the unstable mountainside toward Roosevelt. Many residents were unconcerned with the landslide. As the water started to rise, most did not have time to get all of their possessions out. Two days after the initial slide, the blocked Monumental Creek flooded the town forever and created Roosevelt Lake. It is said that many residents would go to “fish” in the new
A scenic day trip is to the historic Kirkwood Ranch on the Snake River north of McCall.
To access, start from Lucile, Idaho on the Salmon River (about an hour north of McCall on Highway 95) and head west from Lucile up Cow Creek Road (NF-242) to Cow Creek Saddle. Then take the 420 to the fork in road just after the cattle guard where you will take a left to head on down to Kirkwood Ranch. It is 12 miles from Lucile to Kirkwood Ranch – the road is a 2 lane (mostly) gravel road between Lucile and Cow Creek Saddle and then turns to single lane old jeep road a mile past or so.

foraging

Forest to table! From morels to huckleberries, find delicious varieties of foraged delights and add flavor to your adventures.
CHAIRLIFT RIDES
morel foraging
Catch a ride to the top of Brundage Mountain Resort or Tamarack Resort and soak in the scenery. Once on top, explore the view at your leisure.
Morels like springtime conditions, but with the variable weather in McCall’s mountains, a few can still be found in the summer months.
Scenic lake cruise
1. Stay on the sunny side of the mountain. These little gems often pop up on south-facing slopes first since the sun warms the soil earlier than other areas. As the season progresses, you can wander toward north-facing slopes.
Hop aboard the Idaho and take a leisurely 90-minute cruise around Payette Lake. Sit on the top deck and enjoy the fresh mountain air while your captain regales you with history and points of interest along the way.
parks From Ponderosa State Park to the Harshman Skate Park, the iconic “Bearing Wall” at Art Robert’s Park to the splash fountain at Legacy Park, our community spaces highlight the best of McCall. Pack a picnic or grab some take-out from one of the local restaurants and settle in for an afternoon of fun. Most of our area parks are well known, but here are two that may offer a new way to enjoy the great outdoors:
davis beach This quiet beach area is a favorite with families and a perfect place to dip your toes in Payette Lake.
wildhorse park McCall’s newest park and first sensory trail! Wild Horse Park is a small neighborhood pocket park featuring a native plant garden, wildlife habitat trees, and firewise landscaping. A great place to relax in the shade and take in all things wild.
horseback riding Get back to your western roots with a guided horseback ride through Idaho’s mountains. Knowledgeable guides and gentle horses at Ya-Hoo Corrals make this adventure perfect for families. Half day rides, 1.5 hour rides, private rides or an evening ride with delicious BBQ dinner await!
2. Morels love trees. While these mushrooms often grow wherever the wind blows them, you can usually rely on finding a few beneath the shelter of trees, along the edge of forested areas. And don’t discount dead or dying trees – they can often be a haven for Morels. 3. Keep soil types in mind when scouting for these mushrooms. Morels like loamy soil that is welldrained. They often thrive in disturbed ground such as that found in burn sites or logging areas.
huckleberry picking The unofficial mascot of summer and officially our favorite summer food! Depending on the elevation and weather, huckleberries will start showing up in July. 1. Bring a hands-free container. A small bucket or basket that can be tied through your belt loops is a great option. 2. Wear long pants and a long-sleeve shirt. This will help protect you against the brush on the forest floor as well as give you an added layer of protection against mosquitoes. Bug spray is also a good idea! 3. Pack a water bottle. Aside from needing a drink you may also want a bit of extra water to wash off your hands after a day of picking! 4. Huckleberries are a favorite food of bears. While it is rare for a bear to attack, be sure to make some noise as you work your way through a patch and always carry a canister of bear spray just in case!

backyard bbq
the fourth of july weekend is a perfect time to fire up the grill for a backyard bbq. We rounded up some of our favorite culinary inspiration from our local chefs and put together a mouth-watering menu. So ditch the frozen burger patties and get cooking!
garden green bean and gala apple salad courtesy chef gary kucy, rupert’s Ingredients • 1 lb fresh green beans • 3 gala apples • 3 Tbsp chopped fresh dill • 1.5 Tbsp honey mustard • 2 Tbsp cider vinegar • 1 pinch cayenne • 3 Tbsp olive oil • Kosher salt to taste Directions Place 1 gallon of water in stock pot, heat on stove over high heat, add 3 t salt once it reaches a boil. While water is heating, trim stem ends from green beans. Blanch beans in water, by adding them while water is boiling, allow approx. 2-3min to softened texture and bring out color. Once softened slightly but still retaining a little crunch, drain and cover with ice water to cool quickly. For the dressing, place chopped dill, mustard, cider vinegar, and cayenne in a large mixing bowl, mix together. Add chiilled, drained green beans from above, and allow to marinate for 15 minutes. Cut apples into long thin juliennes (or matchsticks) and toss into salad, season with a little salt and a drizzle of olive oil. Can be served chilled or room temperature, should be served immediately to preserve color and texture.

Pieces) • 2 tablespoons olive oil Spice Rub • 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar • 1 tablespoon sweet smoked paprika • 1 tablespoon coarse kosher salt • 1 1/2 teaspoons chipotle chile powder or ancho chile powder • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper Chimichurri Sauce • 3/4 cup olive oil • 3 tablespoons Sherry wine vinegar or red wine vinegar • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 3 Garlic cloves, peeled • 2 medium Shallots or Red Onions • 1/2 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper • 3 cups (packed) stemmed fresh Parsley • 2 cups (packed) stemmed fresh Cilantro • 1 cup (packed) Arugula • Salt and Pepper to Taste
Ingredients • 1 pound butter • 6 cups flour • 2 teaspoons cinnamon • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 2 cups brown sugar • 1 cup sugar • 4 yolks • 3 cups almonds • 2 cups raspberry jam Directions Cream the butter and brown sugar together. Add the salt, baking powder, and cinnamon to the butter mixture. In a food processor add the almonds and sugar. Mix until the almonds are ground up very fine. Add the yolks to the butter mixture. Mix to combine. Add the flour and ground almonds. Mix until it comes together. In a half sheet tray lined with parchment press half almond mixture into the pan.
the
Spread the raspberry jam on top of the almond mixture. Add the remaining dough on top of the jam. Bake at 325 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.
Directions Combine all ingredients for Spice Rub in a small bowl. Combine first 8 ingredients for the Chimicurri Sauce in blender; blend until almost smooth. Add 1/4 of parsley, 1/4 of cilantro, and 1/4 of Arugula; blend until incorporated. Add remaining herbs in 3 more additions, pureeing until almost smooth after each addition. (Can be made 3 hours ahead. Cover; chill). Let Beef stand at room temperature 1 hour. Prepare barbecue (high heat). Pat Beef dry with paper towels; brush with oil. Sprinkle all over with spice rub, using all of mixture (coating will be thick). Place beef on grill; sear 2 minutes on each side. Reduce heat to medium-high. Grill uncovered until instant-read thermometer inserted into thickest part of beef registers 130°F for medium-rare. Transfer to platter. Slice Beef Against the Grain. Serve with Chimichurri Sauce and Flatbread or Tortillas.

bring your own blanket (or chair!) Looking to have a nice meal out, but feeling uncomfortable with dining in? We hear you. Check out our interactive map with countless options for having a to-go picnic at one of our region’s public park and open space facilities. Data shows that activities outside are considered much lower risk due to open airflow and better opportunities for physical distancing. Consider grabbing a to-go order from your favorite restaurants and getting some sunshine and fresh air while you dine!
before you go: Please keep a physical distance of at least 6 feet from other groups while picnicking, and be sure to wash your hands frequently. We have done our best to account for things like restrooms, hand washing stations and parking on our mapping, but we ask that you please be respectful of our public spaces and clean up after your group to avoid issues with animals and sanitation. As always, we do our best to protect this mountain playground, and we ask that our guests and residents alike all do their part to keep our region pristine.
