Like a song that brings back a memory in vivid detail, food has a special way of marking a moment. While eating is a fundamental part of our every day, it isn’t always just about getting sustenance. Sometimes, food becomes an experience that shapes a story in our life.

Culinary experiences in the McCall area are wide and varied. Perhaps your family celebrates a special occasion with a steak dinner at The Mill. Maybe you reward a day on the slopes with a burger and craft beer at McCall Brewing Company. Or is the Pancake House on your bucket list every time the whole family gets together in McCall? If you ask 10 people what is on their “must eat” list when they are in McCall, you will likely get 10 different answers. Food is personal. But one thing is universally true: when you share a meal, you share an experience. Explore McCall’s culinary offerings and dish up!

A WINTER FEAST
Great food plays a leading role in how we celebrate. Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, weddings, visits from friends and family and vacations are all cause for feasting. Sometimes, finding time to sit back and enjoy a well-prepared meal is reason enough to celebrate.
For an immersive dining experience, we love Rupert’s at Hotel McCall, the Cutwater and The Narrows Steakhouse at Shore Lodge, Steamer’s Steak and Seafood and the Jug Mountain Ranch Clubhouse’s Supper Club. At Rupert’s start with the Bacon Ranch Shrimp Scampi. Jumbo prawns are sautéed in garlic, wine and bacon butter then served hot with fresh baguette slices. For the main course, try the Seared Sea Scallops with sweet corn risotto or the Grilled Beef Tenderloin Filet set atop light, fluffy Idaho russet mashers. Save room for dessert and enjoy hand-crafted confections while taking in the view of Payette Lake. (rupertsathotelmccall.com) Shore Lodge provides several stunning dining options Continued page 8

including the Cutwater and The Narrows Steakhouse. At the Cutwater, we love the Slow Braised Beef Short Ribs and the Pan Seared Pacific Wild Salmon. The Narrows Steakhouse will re-open for business in January 2018. Freshly remodeled, but with the same excellence in food and wine. The Narrows received Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence in 2016 and 2017. This restaurant should be a must-do on your dining list! (shorelodge.com/dining) Steamer’s Steak and Seafood is in the heart of downtown McCall and continues to delight families with their surf and turf menu. Try the Lamb and Trout or the Steak, Shrimp and Scallop Platter. Both bring a mix of harmonious flavors onto one plate. Pair a complimentary vintage with your meal. The knowledgeable servers at Steamer’s in-house wine bar, The Cork, can help you choose the right wine from their extensive selection. (steamersrestaurant.com) In the winter months, the Clubhouse Restaurant at Jug Mountain Ranch serves up a unique weekend dining experience. Each Friday and Saturday evening, enjoy a four-course a la carte meal. Menus rotate each week with selections like Wild Mushroom Risotto to start, Thai Chicken Coconut Soup to follow, and entrée of Honey Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi and a Huckleberry Crumble Square for dessert. Each week offers a choice of two appetizers, soup or salad, three to four entrée selections and two desserts. (jugmountainranch.com/clubhouse-restaurant) Continued page 10

Salmon River Brewery Elk Burger
BURGER NIGHT
Who doesn’t love a good old fashioned burger? While it is easy to discount a burger as “boring,” in and around McCall, you will find they are anything but. Seemingly endless combinations of meat, bun, toppings and accompanying sides make this family favorite an easy go-to meal. At Cougar Dave’s in Donnelly, The Cowboy is our favorite burger. Topped with bacon, barbeque sauce, smoked cheddar and onion rings, this dish is both burger and side in one. But don’t let that stop you from ordering a side of garlic or truffle fries. (find Cougar Dave’s on Facebook) For more great pub fare, try Salmon River Brewery’s Black-N-Blue Elk Burger. This third pound elk patty is topped with gorgonzola crumbles, grilled onions, bacon, lettuce, tomato and spicy aioli. Served up with a side of Salmon River’s signature rosemary fries, this burger is oh-so-satisfying. (salmonriverbrewery.com) While most know My Father’s Place as having the best milkshakes around, their burgers are also a pretty big deal. While the Smokejumper and Baconeer are delicious, we have to go with the Nut Burger as our favorite. Add sautéed mushrooms and onions to this perfectly spiced vegetarian option, add a side of sweet potato fries, and we promise you won’t be disappointed. (find My Father’s Place on Facebook) Need a burger after a day of snowmobiling? The Baum Shelter in Warren, Idaho is the perfect stop! Open seven days a week and in the middle of some of the best riding around, stop in for one of “Aunt Margaret’s Famous Burgers.” Stick to a traditional option like the Old-Fashioned or spice things up with the Jalapeño Burger. (baumsheltertoo.com) For those over the age of 21 looking for a quick bite with a great view, the Yacht Club is an easy choice. Their Cheeseburger is a classic; delicious, filling and reasonably priced at just $6. (yacht-clubmccall.com) Continued page 12

TACOS
We have a serious obsession with tacos. With t-shirts touting “I love you more than tacos” and “Live every day like it is Taco Tuesday,” it is pretty safe to say these delicious treats will always hold a special place in our hearts. From sweet to spicy, large to small, a good taco can fit any mood or occasion. Pueblo Lindo serves up a huge selection of authentic Mexican cuisine with a delightful side of friendly service. If you need a taco fix, try the Carne Asade Tacos. This trio comes wrapped in a double tortilla and sprinkled with onion and cilantro. (find Pueblo Lindo McCall on Facebook) For 35 years, Southside Grill has been a staple in McCall. Their fresh, high quality ingredients add delicious flavor to every dish. The House and Fish Tacos are always good, but we recommend being a bit adventurous and trying the Mini Calamari Taco Trio. Crisped in rice flour and topped with a refreshing Peruvian cilantro slaw, these tacos are a treat! (southsidemccall.com) The bright and lively décor at KB’s Burrito in McCall is a just a preview of the festive flavors on the menu. Their Famous Fish Tacos come piled high with mahi mahi, cabbage, cabo sauce, salsa and a squeeze of fresh lime. You can also swap out the mahi mahi for shrimp. Either way you go, it is delicious! WICH-CRAFT
From a simple PB&J to a decadent deli sub with layer upon layer of flavor, sandwiches have become a staple. And the possibilities are endless. Stack colorful veggies with freshly sliced meat; add a creamy dressing and a few slices of cheese, put it all between two slices of bread and voila! A sandwich is born. With so many options, a quick bite or a light lunch can be different every day. Find fresh ingredients piled high between two slices of mouthwatering specialty bread, baked fresh daily, and you have sandwich perfection. Pick up your order slip at the Evening Rise Bread Company counter, circle the meats, cheeses, toppings and sauces you want then sit back and enjoy. Don’t forget to add the pickle on the side! (find Evening Rise Bread Company on Facebook) When it is cold outside, there is nothing better than a grilled cheese sandwich to warm you up. Seven Devils Pub at Tamarack Resort puts a twist on this classic. They start with a grilled flatbread and stuff it with melty cheese, heirloom tomatoes, avocados, bacon and sprouts. Plus, you can choose truffle chips, soup or couscous as a yummy side. (tamarackidaho.com) They say variety is the spice of life and variety is what you will find at Subway! With multiple locations in the valley, this one-stop sub shop is always a great on-the-go option. Foot long or flatbread, toasted or traditional, you can build a different sandwich every day of the year. (subway.com) Continued page 14

BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS There are morning people and then there are breakfast people. If the smell of crackling bacon and freshly brewed coffee put you in a state of nirvana, you fall into the latter category. Touted as the most important meal of the day, breakfast can take on a life of its own. Whether you are a traditionalist, a lover of baked goods, or like to push the breakfast boundaries, McCall has you covered.
Pancake House Cinnamon Roll
Known for its stunning flowers in the summer, Christmas lights in the winter and plate-sized cinnamon rolls, the Pancake House is an icon in McCall. With a menu that covers everything from pancakes to omelets to benedicts to biscuits and gravy, you won’t have any trouble finding a hearty breakfast here. Oh, and breakfast is served all day so you can enjoy that huge cinnamon roll any time! (mccallpancakehouse.com) Stacey Cakes is more than just icing on the cake. Handmade treats like their famous ginger snaps, salted caramel cheesecake and “twixter” shortbread cookies line the display cases. We recommend you pick up a few sweet treats for later and opt for a delicious piece of quiche for breakfast. The perfectly baked tart crust plays host to a rotating mix of ingredients inspired by the season. (find Stacey Cakes McCall on Facebook) TJ’s Cutting Edge Café is probably best known as the snack stop during hockey games or ice rink events, but it is also a hot spot for breakfast! We love the Bus Driver Scramble with rosemary roasted potatoes, scrambled eggs, cheese, bacon and sausage and the Puck Breakfast complete with buttermilk biscuit topped with a fried egg, your choice of ham, bacon or sausage and covered in country gravy. (tjscuttingedgecafe.com) If you ask a local where to grab a quick, hot breakfast, you will likely be led to the Old Town Station in McCall. Yes, it is a gas station and convenience store. It also has a fabulous food counter that serves up hearty fare to fill you up before your adventures. Try the Moose Toast, loaded with eggs, bacon, sausage and cheese, or the Gravy Train Burrito filled with eggs, hash browns, bacon, sausage and (of course) gravy. (find Old Town Station on Facebook) Continued page 16

APRÈS SKI (OR RIDE)
Whether you call them appetizers, tapas, or canapés, these small bites are delicious by any name. Indulge in a single order, pair several together to create a colorful meal, or share your favorites family style around the table. When the weather turns wintery, small bites become even more enjoyable après winter fun! Either après or for a mid-day powder break, find lots of hearty selections on the mountain. The Canoe Grill at Tamarack Resort is great for family-friendly casual fare. We love their handmade pizzas and grab-and-go salads. (tamarackidaho.com) Brundage Mountain Resort now has two great spots to ‘apres’ after a day on the slopes. The Mile High Nachos at Smoky’s Bar & Grill have reached legendary status, but some more adventurous options are also available upstairs at the Upper Lot Pub. Try a Ballard & Bacon Skewer or a Smoked Trout Crostini in this newer, adults-only space. (brundage.com) Off the mountain, pair a glass of wine from Bistro 45 with the Tomato Basil & Mozzarella Bruschetta or Baked Brie. Grab one of the house board games or well-worn books and sit back to relax. The cozy atmosphere is ideal after a day in the snow. (bistro45mccall.com)

While sushi may not fit the traditional après ski picture, we would argue that this is one of the best ways to end a long day of fun. The Sushi Bar showcases a perfect view of Payette Lake and some of the best rolls in Idaho. You won’t be able to order just one! We love the Rainbow Roll, the spicy Bonfire and the Sharlie’s Garden, but anything on the menu is sure to please. (sushibarmccall.com) Beer cheese soup. Need we say more? McCall Brewing Company does soup right by combining smooth aged cheese with their fresh ales. It’s delicious on its own or as a starter before your meal. Pair it with any one of the Brewery’s craft beers and you have done après ski right! (mccallbrew.com) Looking for a bit of adventure in your small bites? The Anchor is your place. Find fun options like Pork Thai-quitos, Froggie Pops, and Bacon Artichoke Rice Flour Fritters alongside staples like the Grilled Shrimp Cocktail and Anchor Steamers. KING OF THE GRILL
Steak. The king of meats. Something about a juicy cut of meat, crosshatched from the grill, with a perfectly done center makes grown men swoon. If you are after a Tri-tip, T-bone, New York Strip, Filet Mignon, Rib-Eye, Porterhouse, Tenderloin, Ribs, or Brisket, we have you covered.

Named for the small mining town that existed in the 1880s where the restaurant now sits, Lardos Grill and Saloon is the local gathering place. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, cold beer and comfort food menu, Lardos is also a fabulous place to get your steak fix. Try the Rib Eye Steak, cooked just the way you like it, or the Choice Prime Rib, served daily starting at 5pm. (lardogrillandsaloon.com)
Weddings • Corporate Events Family Reunions
The Mill Steakhouse lives up to its name. With selections including the New York, Rib Eye, Medallions and Famous Prime Rib in 8, 10 or 18 ounce cuts, there are plenty of options to keep you satisfied. On top of all that, the ambiance of this eclectic joint makes dining here an unforgettable experience. Sit and swing in an old chairlift chair by the huge open fireplace or stop in on a Friday night to hear piano man Jamie Cope play your requested tunes. (themillsteakhousemccall.com) If a little wood smoke appeals to your taste buds, stop by Incahoots BBQ in McCall. These hearty, home style meals are made from scratch and use locally grown and raised meats whenever possible. Try the Tri Tip topped with homemade sauces like the Cranberry BBQ or the Spicy BBQ. (incahootsbbq.com) Looking for good food, good people and good times? The Intersection BBQ Bar and Grill in New Meadows is the place. The Brisket should definitely be on your list and if you are lucky enough to stop in when it is in stock, the Pastrami is a must. This local favorite is brined and cured for a month before serving. North Fork Coffee Roasters Dark Roast Beans
NOT YOUR AVERAGE CUP OF JOE
Coffee is hands down the most popular beverage in the world. It is hot, it is cozy, it is energizing. Taken straight black or with a myriad of accoutrements, a good cup of joe is like a warm blanket on a cold winter day. We are lucky to have a big variety of coffee shops in McCall. Fogglifter Café in the heart of downtown is a great stop for a morning boost. Sip on drinks made from fresh roasted beans from Landgrove Coffee in Troy, Idaho and munch on light breakfast fare. (find Fogglifter Café on Facebook) Just steps from Legacy Park and Payette Lake, Mountain Java serves up hot drinks in a boutique setting. Peruse artwork from local photographers, browse the selection of mugs, chocolates, gift cards and tea or sign up for the Mountain Vino Wine Club as you sip your java. (find Mountain Java on Facebook) Sometimes you don’t want to get out of your car when the temperature drops outside. Wild River Java lets you stay warm and toasty while you order your cup of joe. Drive right up to the window and order your favorite! (find Wild River Java on Facebook) If you want to enhance your morning ritual, pick up a bag of freshly roasted beans from North Fork Coffee Roasters. As a small-batch roaster, they source seasonally available beans and carefully craft each batch to bring out the fullest flavor. From light to dark, North Fork has a variety to please any palate! PIE IN THE SKY
A quality slice of pizza is crave-worthy. All that melty cheese layered with meat and veggies atop a perfectly baked crust makes our mouth water. Pizza is a universal comfort food and appropriate at any time of the day (hello leftover cold pizza for breakfast), in any season. Aside from all of this, pizza brings people together. What better way to spend an evening than sharing a pie with the ones you love? Growler’s Pizza Grill is a family owned restaurant sure to please everyone in the group. The dough is handmade fresh daily and topped with delicious combinations of toppings. Pick a specialty pie like the Big Growler, the Payette Lake Supreme, or the Bruschetta Pizza. You can also build your own to order. (growlerspizza.com) The menu at Toll Station Pizza and Pasta is big. You can find everything from burgers to specialty sandwiches to traditional pasta dishes, but here, the pizza is the star. Dine in on a hot and ready pizza like the Zesty Garden, BBQ Chicken, Mac and Cheese Pizza or the McCall Special or pick one up to take and bake at home. (tollstationpizza.com) Crusty’s Pizza is a culture, not just a restaurant. Here, they say “different is better” and it shows in the eclectic mix of weekly live music and the thin sourdough crust they are known for. Selections like the Butcher Block, which comes with pesto, elk sausage, prosciutto, roasted garlic, mushrooms, caramelized onions and blue cheese, and The P&P, a spin on a traditional Hawaiian using prosciutto and pineapple, Crusty’s puts a unique twist on this classic food. ADVENTURES IN FOOD
McCall puts a bold spin on dinner. Pairing a rustic setting with elegant fare, the Bear’s Den Dinner After Dark offers an unforgettable adventure for your taste buds. Brundage Mountain has transformed their mid-mountain outpost, the Bear’s Den, into a cozy venue for a spectacular four-course meal after the lifts stop turning. The journey begins by stepping aboard a SnowCat at the base area. The Cat whisks dinner-goers on a short uphill trek to the Bears Den where a warm welcome awaits. Upon arrival, enjoy a complimentary drink (like mulled wine with cardamom-crema) and settle in for a four-course meal featuring seasonal dishes prepared by Executive Chef Devin and team. A wine pairing is included with the meal and there is also a full selection of craft brews, wine, and after-dinner sippers available for purchase. Plan to enjoy the Bear’s Den After Dark at one of several public dinners (including two ‘full-moon’ events) throughout the season or book a private event if you have 12 or more in your group! Please visit Brundage.com/after-dark for upcoming public reservation dates.
The Fine Print: Cost: $129 per person (includes tax and gratuity) Arrival Procedure: Arrive at the Brundage Lodge at 5:30pm. The first SnowCat departs at 6:00pm and dinner service begins at 7:00pm Reservations: Call (208) 315-3080 or email reservations@brundage.com Private Events: Private reservations for groups of 12 or more are available Monday– Thursday during ski season.
Blue Moon Yurt We can’t talk about adventures in food without mentioning the Blue Moon Yurt. This culinary experience takes guests along a trail lit by tiki-torches via cross-country skis or snowshoes to a cozy yurt tucked into the trees. The Blue Moon Yurt has previously operated in Ponderosa State Park. This season, the Yurt is taking a hiatus to revamp their offerings and experience. While the Yurt is not open this year, we are excited to see what the team at Blue Moon Outfitters has in store for the future. We can’t wait for winter 2019! Standing on one of the endless peaks surrounding Long Valley is a humbling experience, partly because getting there can prove so difficult. In the winter months, backcountry skiers and snowboarders summit these mountains on hi-tech equipment, expending considerable energy reaching the top. Snowmobilers, however, can reach these same elevations with more ease. SnoWest Magazine has called the McCall area some of the West’s premier snowmobiling country. According to the magazine, “with more than 500 miles of groomed trails, and the opportunity to jump off the trail anywhere along the way, there is unlimited riding potential. Perhaps this is why McCall has become a destination for snowmobilers. The vast and diverse riding opportunities available in the region have brought world-class athletes and riders to explore some of the best winter terrain around. Make no mistake about it, world class athlete or not, snowmobiling is a doable sport for almost anyone. Whether you want to rent and ride your own machine or hire a seasoned guide to show you the ropes, the McCall area can now accommodate both options. Continued page 26 Photo courtesy Phil Yribar

CM Backcountry Rentals set up shop in McCall in 2011, and immediately noticed an opportunity to expand the snowmobile market. Similarly, Brundage Mountain Resort, who has been shuttling cat skiers to backcountry locations since the early 1990s, saw an opportunity to reach a broader population of recreationalists. That opportunity was guided snowmobile service. To obtain guide permits on Forest Service land, both businesses had to go through a rigorous permitting process to meet the high standards for training and safety, including avalanche certification for their guides. Because of this extensive training, you can rest easy knowing your guide’s number one priority is safety. In the winter of 2016, both CM Backcountry Rentals and Brundage Mountain Resort secured permits to begin offering guided snowmobile trips in the Payette National Forest, McCall Ranger District. Over the mountain from McCall, Seven Devils Guest Ranch also has a special use permit to offer a guided backcountry snowmobile experience in the Council Ranger District of the Payette National Forest. So what does a guided snowmobile trip entail? First, it means that a permitted, qualified professional rider will guide you into the Idaho backcountry, imparting knowledge and training so you can safely operate your machine. Depending on the experience you are after, this can mean a trip over groomed snowmobile trails, off-trail powder riding or a combination of both alongside your guide. You can ride your own machine or opt for a tandem snowmobile (please call ahead for a tandem machine as these are limited). As the guest, you determine what type of country and what type of riding you would like to do based on your level of comfort. Continued page 28

For newbies to the snowmobile game or intermediate riders looking to enhance their skills, a guided snowmobile trip is the way to go. Along with improving your riding techniques, these trips also take you to some magical places. We asked CM Backcountry Rentals and Brundage Mountain Resort to share their favorite routes for a sneak peek at what you can expect on your trip. Both trails are also great options for independent snowmobile owners or renters to explore!
Brundage Mountain Resort’s Featured Trail:
Burgdorf Hot Springs Historical Burgdorf Hot Springs is one of the ultimate winter destinations for our region. There are two ways to access the hot springs, either by the Warren Wagon Trail starting at the Francis Wallace parking lot past North Beach or the more scenic path up and over Copet Creek to the west. This is the route Brundage uses for their guided snowmobile trips to Burdgorf. It takes you on the road less traveled with several scenic overlooks to stop and admire along the way.

The trip starts from the Gordon Titus Parking Lot, also known as Goose Creek Falls High Elevation Parking Lot, located up Goose Creek Road a half mile before you hit Brundage Mountain. From the parking lot, head up Goose Creek Trail past scenic spots like Clowe Point and Brundage Reservoir. At the Brundage Reservoir intersection, take a right turn, heading east over Copet Creek Summit. This route ultimately takes you down to meet the well-trafficked Warren Wagon Road Trail and to the Burgdorf intersection twenty miles from where you meet the main trail. Once you arrive at Burgdorf, soak your chilled bones in the hot, healing waters while watching the steam rise out of the snow. When you feel like you have had your hot water fix, filled up on water and snacks and dried-off enough to put your helmet back on, you will return the way you came. “Venturing into the backcountry can be intimidating if you’ve never done it before,” says April Whitney, communications director at Brundage Mountain Resort. “Many of our guests tell us having the option of sledding with an experienced guide was what made them feel comfortable trying something brand new.”
Map Route: Follow the trail from the Goose Creek High Elevation Parking lot, turn right at A, turn right at B, turn left at C and turn left at D that points you north on Warren Wagon road. Twenty miles up the Warren Wagon Road, you will come to the Burgdorf Junction, where you turn left to the hot springs approximately 2 miles down the road.

North of Brundage Reservoir lie dozens of additional trail miles and country to explore. CM Backcountry owner Cody Monroe loves this area for its sweeping terrain, much of which has opened-up over the years from past fires. The scenic views along this route such as Black Tip Point, Fisher Creek Saddle, and of Granite Lake once you reach your destination, make this ride worth every minute. The direct route is groomed, but this area offers plenty of powder stashes for more advanced riders to play in. If you choose CM Backcountry’s guided trips, they include eight hours of guided service. That leaves plenty of time to jump off the main trail and explore some of the epic scenery or try out some of your new skills. “Be open-minded,” says Monroe. “Expect to be challenged in a new way and that you will receive some feedback on how to ride safely and correctly. At the end of the day, you will learn more than you realized.” And have a lot of fun, too!

slice of life
By McKenzie Kraemer While the McCall area attracts a lot of visitors looking for fun, healthy activities, access to healthcare probably isn’t among the top reasons tourists decide to visit here. Still, it’s nice to know that if an illness or accident strikes, there is a facility in this small town poised to deliver the best care and service available. That’s just one of the reasons that Valley County has been named the “Healthiest County in Idaho” for the second consecutive year. Sean McCallister, the site administrator for St. Luke’s McCall, has a unique perspective on the level of care available in the McCall area. “I came from Alaska and worked in remote, small communities throughout the state,” he says. “The quality and scope of services offered in McCall is second to none. I have never seen anything quite like it.” That uniqueness is exemplified in “Strategy 20/20,” St. Luke’s vision for the future of healthcare in all the communities they serve. The strategy aims to achieve the best healthcare outcomes at the lowest possible cost. That means emphasizing preventative services, primary care and partnering on health initiatives in the community spearheaded by groups outside of the St. Luke’s system.
36
Programs like the Youth Advocacy Coalition, the Valley-Adams Health Improvement Coalition, local food pantries, community garden projects, a shuttle service between Riggins and McCall, nutrition in schools and providing free bike and ski helmets are just a few of the community projects St. Luke’s McCall supports. “In small communities, you see a lot of teamwork and partnerships,” says McCallister. “This is a really powerful way to engage the community…instead of asking people to come to us, we are bringing health education to them.” St. Luke’s McCall also tries to lead by example. “We want to set the tone for what health and wellness is on a personal level,” says McCallister. Employees of St. Luke’s participate in a “Know Your Numbers” program that sets a baseline for things like cholesterol, blood glucose, body mass index, blood pressure and lifestyle choices. Once the baseline is set, each employee is given tools and resources to take charge of their own health. In addition, St. Luke’s McCall started a bike share program in 2017. Any employee is welcome to check a bike out before or after work or on their lunch break. This program has been so successful, some departments actually use them for meetings and take a ride down to Legacy Park rather than gathering in a conference room. These community efforts are paying off. For the second year in a row, Valley County earned the top spot as Idaho’s Healthiest County. Valley County also ranks first in the nation for longevity. “With more than 3,000 counties nationwide, this designation is really quite phenomenal,” says McCallister. These recognitions are a result of a study conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation comparing 35 physical health, mental health and social factors. “St. Luke’s, in collaboration with our schools, local government, and non-profit community partners continues to build a culture of health,” says Lyle Nelson, St. Luke’s McCall community relations and health promotion director.
Looking to the future, St. Luke’s will not only continue building on the area’s culture of health, they will be building a new facility. The project aims to expand the hospital from 47,000 square feet to nearly 80,000 square feet. Most departments will double or triple in size. This major structure replacement is currently in the planning and design phase and if all funding goals are met, site preparation will begin in summer 2018. “The combination of infrastructure, technology, a highly skilled and compassionate care team, and relentless focus on community health will ensure we meet the health needs of people in our region now and in the future,” says McCallister.
How do you define health? Physical? Mental? Social? Health goes beyond medical care. It’s how we take care of ourselves, how we interact with our communities, how we take care of each other. Let St. Luke’s support your health however you define it. #pictureyourhealth
What’s
New? 4 Exciting Additions to Winter Recreation
It may be hard to believe, but winter in the McCall area is about to get even more epic. Our amazing businesses continue to change, grow and expand their services, providing fresh new ways to keep the whole family entertained.
Here are four new additions you won’t want to miss.
1. Tamarack Resort’s Hibernator Glade
Tamarack already has loads of fabulous tree skiing, but they are upping the ante by opening brand new terrain for even more options. The Hibernator glade is an intermediate tree skiing area easily accessed from the Tamarack Express Chairlift. Just hop off the lift and take the groomed Showtime Trail to the glade.
2. Brundage Adds A New Lift on Easy Street Brundage is taking free skiing on Easy Street to the next level with the installation of a brand new SunKid conveyor lift. The 120-foot “Easy Rider Carpet” will operate seven days a week during regular season, and every weekend during the Spring. This new lift will enhance the children’s lesson programs, making it easier for the little ones to access learning terrain without riding an elevated lift. Brundage Mountain will continue to offer free lift tickets to the public on the Easy Street Triple Chairlift all season long. Photo courtesy April Whitney

3. Bear Basin’s New Warming Hut The yurt at Bear Basin, which served as the Nordic Center’s home base for the past eight seasons, is getting an upgrade! The new 40-foot by 12-foot structure will feature a spacious lobby with changing rooms, a waxing station, an office, storage area and a propane stove to keep everyone warm and toasty. This project has been a major logistical and fundraising effort over last three years. Funding for the new structure came from the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, the City of McCall and proceeds from the “Snow Ball” fundraiser held annually by the Payette Lakes Ski Club. In addition, many hours and hard work by the Payette National Forest McCall Ranger District and Epikos Design + Planning mean that the new structure will be in place for the start of the winter season. The Bear Basin Nordic area is home to 25 kilometers of dog-friendly groomed trails. Learn more and find daily rates and season passes at payettelakesskiclub.org.

4. Meet the Idaho IceCats You actually already know them! The Idaho Junior Steelheads have changed their name to the Idaho IceCats! The name change comes as the hockey team enters its ninth season. The catalyst behind the change is simply to clear up confusion with several other teams with similar names including the Junior Steelheads, a youth hockey team, and the Idaho Steelheads team based in Boise. While their name may have changed, the action on the ice has not! This group has brought home five titles in the last seven years. The “IceCat” as a mascot was selected for its association with the outdoors and McCall’s proximity to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area. Coach John Olver says it best; “It was time for (the team) to gain its own identity. Our players are aggressive, strong and fierce competitors and this logo will reflect that identity.” We can’t wait to cheer on our home team!

The secret is out…we Love love in McCall! With venues around the area becoming more and more popular for couples looking to say “I do,” we wanted to get some insight about what makes this place so special and a few insider tips on planning a wedding in the McCall area. We turned to husband and wife team Travis and Candice at Summit Photography for answers. This photography duo got their start taking pictures of their two children. From there, they started shooting family weddings and their hobby soon blossomed into a full scale photography business. After five years of capturing brides and grooms throughout the Valley, they have learned a lot. Over peach smoothies, they shared their wisdom with us.
1. Why has the McCall area become such a hot spot for tying the knot? “Everywhere you look there is beautiful scenery,” says Travis. It doesn’t matter where you go, every venue is stunning. “I also love the intimacy. We have seen weddings with 12 guests and weddings with 250 guests, but in every case, they have a special, intimate quality about them,” Candice adds.

2. Do you have a favorite wedding venue in the area? “Each venue is so different and unique,” says Travis, “it really depends on your personality.” With Valley County exploding in popularity as a wedding destination, Candice and Travis say to also consider the season. While summer is always lovely, fall is their favorite time for a wedding. “There are so many wonderful colors,” says Travis. Winter weddings can also be stunning. “You can’t beat a bride with fur,” says Candice. “Her ring sparkling and a little punch of color on the dress or shoes or flowers look amazing against the snow,” she adds.
3. What is the secret to an event that “clicks?” “A timeline,” Candice and Travis both agree wholeheartedly. Weddings, especially, tend to have a lot of moving parts. Laying out a timeline in advance helps make sure you don’t miss anything that is important to you.
4. What is your favorite part of a wedding? “As photographers, we absolutely love the ‘first look.’” For couples who aren’t tied to seeing each other for the first time walking down the aisle, the first look creates that same wow-factor in a private setting. “It gives a bride and groom Continued page 46

time to really capture the moment, a moment just for them,” says Candice. “And selfishly,” adds Travis, “we get better pictures!”
5. Do you have any tips for couples starting their wedding-planning journey? Do your research! “Make sure that you understand exactly what your wedding package includes,” says Candice. Does the venue include tables and chairs or do you need to rent those separately? If your photographer says you will receive 400 photos, are they edited or unedited? “We highly recommend working with an event coordinator if your wedding will be 50 people or more,” says Travis. A coordinator can help you navigate all of the details and make the planning process a lot less stressful. “If you don’t work with a coordinator, designate someone to be in charge the day of,” says Candice. “The bride shouldn’t have to figure out where the flowers are or help Aunt Alice when she takes a wrong turn on her way to the venue.”

Author Craig Vroom Discovering Sharlie By McKenzie Kraemer If you spend any time in McCall, you are likely to hear about Sharlie, our resident lake monster. Those who have seen her describe a creature 35 feet long with a dinosaur-type head, pronounced jaw, humps like a camel and a shell-like skin. While regular sightings have been reported over the years, no official evidence of Sharlie’s existence has been offered up. Regardless, residents need no proof to know that she exists. Her presence adds imagination and mystery to the area’s folklore and now, is also the inspiration for author Craig Vroom’s latest children’s book, Discovering Sharlie.
52
Vroom first came to McCall on his honeymoon. Having grown up on the East Coast, he followed in his father’s military footsteps and joined the Navy. While serving in Bermuda, he met his wife, “an Idaho girl,” according to Vroom. The honeymoon in McCall was his first time in Idaho and he loved it from the beginning. Over the years, Vroom and his family kept coming back to vacation, eventually buying property and making McCall a permanent home in retirement.
Discovering Sharlie is imaginative and lively, written in a rhyming meter that is both fun to read and fun to listen to. It also earned Vroom the Idaho Top Author Award for Best Children’s Book in 2015.
It was retirement that allowed Vroom time to write, although he says he had always wanted to be a children’s author after reading to his kids each night. “They loved the rhyming and poetry of Dr. Suess, but after a while, I got tired of reading the same stories so I started making them up with my own kids as the heroes,” Vroom says.
Pick up a copy of Discovering Sharlie, published by Tru Publishing in Boise, Idaho, at the McCall Area Chamber (605 N 3rd Street), Razzle Dazzle (503 Pine Street), or Shore Lodge (501 W Lake Street). It is also available at the McCall Public Library (218 East Park Street). Other works by Craig Vroom include The Tall Trees, The Secretous Sign and The Riddle of Shipwreck Sound.
After publishing a series of books about a boy and his dragon, inspired by his own son Andrew, Vroom decided it was time to give his daughter Olivia her own adventures. While researching the urban legends and sightings of Sharlie, Vroom realized that there was not a lot of material aimed at kids. “There is a chapter book available that appeals to an older crowd, but there were no picture books for the younger kids,” Vroom says. He set out to remedy that. The story follows two young detectives, Olivia and Jenny, who are called in by Scotland Yard to investigate when Nessie, the Loch Ness monster, goes missing. The girls travel underwater with their “Super Transducer Blaster” searching for clues and eventually end up in an underground river that leads right to Payette Lake. Throughout the book, the girls have a lucky penny to help get them out of trouble. As part of the “Lucky Penny Detective Adventures,” Discovering Sharlie is the first in a new series Vroom is working on. His next book in the series, set in Yellowstone National Park, will follow the girls as they try to find out why Old Faithful has run dry.

Summer turns up the heat on the mountain music scene. Catch weekly music everywhere from the Narrows at Shore Lodge to the Anchor. Plan to hit up annual events including the Yellow Pine Harmonica Festival, Summer Music Festival at Roseberry, SummerFest, and the Huckleberry Jam, or catch a summer music series session at Tamarack Resort and Jug Mountain Ranch.
GET DIRTY MOUNTAIN BIKING The McCall area is ripe with miles of single and double track trails for all abilities and has been designated as a Silver Ride Center by the International Mountain Biking Association. Hitch a ride to the top with lift serviced mountain biking at Brundage Mountain Resort and Tamarack Resort or take advantage of the shuttle service at Jug Mountain Ranch. If you would rather take the trail less traveled, stop by mccallchamber.org and view our Mountain Biking itinerary with fresh ideas for easy, intermediate, and expert rides around the region.
DINING The patio is open! One of our favorite things about warm sunny days in McCall is dining al fresco and sampling the delicious fare of our local restaurants, bistros, and pubs. Just about every eatery has a place to take advantage of the sunshine or pick up something to go and picnic at Legacy Park along the shores of Payette Lake.
THRILLING WHITEWATER Idaho is well-known as the Whitewater State and there is certainly no shortage of rapids to satisfy thrill-seekers in the McCall area. From the laid back Cabarton Stretch to thrilling multi-day trips on the Main Salmon through the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, we have the whitewater you are looking for!
