WHAT’S INSIDE

WELCOME TO McCALL The first half of 2020 has been challenging, to say the least. The global COVID-19 pandemic brought months of uncertainty and hardship, but it also showed us a resiliency we have never seen before. The willingness, however difficult, to push pause on “business as usual” to protect both family and strangers alike, to work from home, educate from home, postpone vacations and travel, even postpone day-to-day errands was incredible. The creativity and adaptability of our fellow citizens is inspiring. We have all been through a lot. The changing season is bringing with it new hope and new appreciation for this special place. As our communities open up and welcome visitors back to this mountain retreat, we invite you to take a moment to learn about what is new, what to expect and a few simple ways you can help protect yourself and this special mountain playground at ProtectYourMountainPlayground.com.

McCall’s Single Track Scene Finds Its Flow By McKenzie Kraemer

Inviting one of the best freeride mountain bikers in the world to test the trails in McCall is a bit daunting. And when another professional mountain biker, quickly rising to the top of the sport and competing in huge events like Red Bull’s Rampage, comes along on the trip, the intimidation factor increases tenfold. So, when the opportunity to have Darren Berrecloth and KC Deane explore the area’s offerings arose, we jumped at the chance to see how McCall measured up. The verdict? “Mountain biking in McCall is top notch,” says Berrecloth. “The trails are so smooth in comparison to other places like Moab where it is rough and rocky. Really good flow—a good rhythm.” On top of that, one thing that made McCall stand out for this global traveler was the charm. “McCall has a very laid-back feel—the way it used to be—everyone was so friendly,” says Berrecloth. “It was a treat.” Continued page 10

Mountain biking in McCall has been not-so-quietly growing over the last five years. In 2015, the area was designated as a Silver Ride Center by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) and since that time, the existing backcountry trails paired with brand new purpose-built trails around the Valley have only increased McCall’s mountain bike appeal.

During their visit, Berrecloth and Deane were accompanied by renowned outdoor photographer Grant Gunderson who captured the experience. From riding the Payette Lake Trail, Brundage Mountain Resort, Jug Mountain Ranch, Tamarack Resort and a few backcountry trails in between, the trio provided a brilliant visual representation of what you can expect to find on McCall’s mountain bike scene. 12

With more than 500 miles of trails in the greater McCall area, there is certainly no shortage of options. But where do you start? The Central Idaho Mountain Bike Association (CIMBA) has a mission to protect, enhance and create quality trail experiences for mountain bikers throughout Central Idaho. As part of that mission, the organization developed a comprehensive trail map with close to 30 recommended routes (purchase locally at Gravity and Home Town Sports or online at Adventure Maps). In addition, CIMBA works to preserve and maintain the trail system while also adding new, purpose-built trails to expand riding options. One of those new trails is the Payette Lake Trail. “The Payette Lake Trail is really unique because it provides a backcountry experience that starts from downtown McCall,” says Wayne Ruemmele, President of CIMBA. “You can start with breakfast by the lake in the morning, ride the trail and end at a brewery in the afternoon…all without getting in your car.” When complete, the Payette Lake Trail will be 33 miles, tying together several pieces of existing trail and building out new single track to make a full loop around Payette Lake. “This trail is

like a central hub,” says Dave Bingaman, Trails Chair for CIMBA. “It will connect a lot of other systems including Brundage Mountain, Bear Basin, Ponderosa State Park and the Payette Rim Trail.” In addition, the Payette Lake Trail will also offer a place to access other backcountry rides along the way like the Blackwell Loop. As of this summer, more than half of the Payette Lake Trail is complete. The remaining route along the East side of the lake is a few years from completion, currently in the approval process for nine miles of new single track and raising the necessary funds required to build. One group that has been instrumental in helping CIMBA fund projects like the Continued page 12

Payette Lake Trail and continue maintenance efforts in the backcountry is One Track Mind. “At some point, you have to pay knowledgeable people to build the technical parts of the trail,” says Bingaman. “The level of expertise these organizations bring to the table skyrockets our capabilities.” This year will mark a major milestone in the CIMBA/One Track Mind partnership with just over $1 million in funding received for projects in Central Idaho.

In addition to the Payette Lake Trail, CIMBA is also starting a new project this summer, the “Brundage to Bear Basin Trail,” which will include building five and a half miles of new single track in 2020 and an additional three miles in 2021 to connect the two ride parks. On top of this, CIMBA is actively working with groups including the McCall Area Composite Mountain Bike Team, the Central Idaho Trail Riders Alliance and the Idaho Conservation Corps to clear and preserve existing trails throughout the region. To get connected with CIMBA’s efforts, make a donation or volunteer, visit cimbarides.org

Recommended Rides: Payette Lake Trail | Intermediate/Advanced There are several access points to ride the Payette Lake Trail’s single track along the West side of the Payette Lake. Start from the Payette Rim Trail parking lot off of Brundage Lookout Road (Forest Service Road #451 just 2 miles outside of McCall) or at the Brush Creek Parking Lot off of Warren Wagon Road. From either starting point, enjoy views of Payette Lake and features including berms, drops, rock faces and rock gardens.

East Fork of Lake Fork Trail | Intermediate/Advanced This 10-mile cross-country ride has technical rock features mixed with smooth single track riding. Most riders will turn around at Idler Creek, but the trail does continue on for another mile of challenging terrain. The return is fast, making this trail a fun out and back. To access the trail, take Lick Creek Road to the Lake Fork Campground. One mile past the campground, cross the bridge and turn right into the dispersed camping area to park.

Park Riding For most, mountain bike parks are the easiest way to get out and ride. “Park riding is really the future,” says Berrecloth. “It is the way most people will be able to excel, and McCall has a good variety from beginner to expert.” With four major parks in the area offering different experiences, you can come back to McCall again and again without getting bored.

Brundage Mountain Resort Brundage was an early player in the mountain bike game. Their program began in the 1990s, but it wasn’t until the last five years that the Resort really started ramping up their summer offerings, including a major focus on trail-building. “We realized that we had a lot of trails approved on our Master plan, but not yet built,” says Ken Rider, Brundage General Manager. So they set out to remedy that. One of the major projects Brundage first undertook was to add cross-country trails around the base area of the Resort. “A lot of people really like to get out and ride cross country trails, and Brundage didn’t offer any opportunities” says Rider. That has now changed. Last summer, Brundage completed a new four-mile trail at the top of the mountain, Lakeview Vista, and a Continued page 14

base-area trail, Hammerhead. This summer they will be Ph o to completing several new cou rtes y Ga trails including the Thorn r y Peters on Creek connection and Wild Cat off of the existing Elk trail. They will also begin work on “Around the Mountain,” a trail that will link Lakeview Vista on the south side with Grouse near Sargent’s Peak on the north side and traverse the entire Bike Park area. “We want to enhance mountain biking in the entire region,” says Rider. “So we continue to look for new routes and new partners to expand the riding experience.” That has included connecting the Grouse trail at Brundage with Goose Lake Road. “From there, you can connect to the Goose Lake trail and make it all the way to Last Chance Campground,” says Rider. “That is a huge extension we were able to put together and an exciting new riding opportunity for the community.” On top of that, Brundage is working with CIMBA to build a new eight-mile stretch of single track to connect Brundage’s Lakeview Vista trail with Bear Basin’s Ditch Witch trail. In addition to the 26 miles of trails at Brundage, guests can also find a rental fleet of Kona and Rossignol bikes as well as a full-service restaurant and bar, and free disc golf. Cross-country trails are free and open seven days a week while lift-serviced trails can be accessed with a daily lift ticket or a Brundage Bike 16

Recommended Rides: Greenhorn & Elk | Beginner Greenhorn is a leisurely out-and-back lollipop with nominal elevation change, some great berm turns and fun rollers as an introduction to riding single track. Greenhorn also connects to Thorn Creek and Hammerhead for a longer ride. For one step up, head to Elk trail, a six-mile downhill cruise with scenic vistas, aspen groves, wildflower meadows and creek crossings.

Growler | Intermediate This two-way trail can be accessed either from the base of the mountain and provide a heart-pumping climb to the top or a switchback ride down from the Lakeview Vista connection.

Hidden Valley | Advanced This technical trail offers fast chutes, big jumps, tight corners, drops and log rides as it descends 1,600 feet.

Park Pass (winter season passholders get a discounted price). Lifts turn Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4:30pm starting Father’s Day Weekend. Brundage.com Continued page 16

Jug Mountain Ranch The one word that defines the mountain bike trail system at Jug Mountain Ranch is “flow.” From top to bottom, the trails offer an intuitive progression of purpose-built single track to make it easy for riders to hone their skills and have fun doing it. “We are always working on giving people options and a way to learn,” says Joe Weede, Outdoor Recreation Manager at Jug Mountain Ranch. “If you ride a green trail off the top and get that dialed, we want to provide you with a blue trail as a next step and a black trail after that, each with progressive challenge.” On top of terrain differences that give each trail a unique feel, the crew at Jug Mountain Ranch integrates variable features so the ride is always fresh. “You can ride a trail at different speeds and with optional lines over and around features and that makes it really fun,” says Heather Thiry, Mountain Bike Manager at Jug Mountain Ranch. In addition to dedicated downhill routes, Jug Mountain Ranch offers cross country trails that traverse the meadows at the base of the mountain and around Upper Jug Creek Reservoir. There is also a skills park to practice technique before hitting the downhill trails and a jump line, Exfoliator, for expert riders that includes big doubles and long tabletops. Hikers and dogs are welcome on multi-directional cross-country trails, but not on the one-way downhill routes for safety reasons.

Riders can get to the top by manpower along wider dirt roads or take a shuttle offered on weekends by reservation ($25 for three hours). And this is no ordinary shuttle. Guests can catch a ride to the top on a sixwheeled Swiss Pinzgauer or an Army Humvee, both equipped with bike racks and plenty of seating.

Tamarack Resort With 25 miles of dedicated lift-serviced trails spanning 1,700 feet of vertical and 25 miles of cross-country trails at the base, Tamarack Resort continues to be a prime riding destination for locals and visitors alike. “The trail system was originally designed and built by IMBA,” says Wolfe Ashcraft, Director of Base Operations at Tamarack Resort. “Since then we continue to add new trails and features bringing us to about 50 trail miles that is perfect for both seasoned riders and families to enjoy.” And family is always at the forefront of Tamarack’s planning.

Ashcraft says the Tamarack Bike Park was designed to offer a wide range of options. The Meadow trails are single track, multi-use and multi-directional trails with a mellow vibe perfect for a family ride or for beginners to get familiar with single track riding. From there, the level of intensity increases as you move up the mountain. Tamarack’s lift-serviced trails offer options for intermediate to advanced riders with varying levels of technicality and terrain. Tamarack installed a new Skills Park near the base area in 2019, which includes smaller progressive features like tabletops, berms, a rock garden and skinny bridges to practice technique in a lower risk environment. In 2020, Tamarack continues to expand the trail system with a dedicated Bike Park staff working to Continued page 20 21

There are several ways to ride Tamarack. The Meadows trails are free of charge and open all hours, seven days a week. Lift-serviced trails can be accessed by purchasing a day pass or Tamarack’s “Boundless Pass,” a year-round season pass that gives passholders unlimited access to both mountain biking in the summer and skiing in the winter. Boundless Passholders also receive complimentary cross-country and mountain bike rentals, a weekly yoga class and complimentary SUP and kayak rentals from the Tamarack Waterfront. Bear Basin Bear Basin is a ride center managed by the Payette National Forest featuring 15 miles of single track. This area can be easily accessed from downtown McCall by bike with the recent completion of the Bear Basin Connector trail that runs along Highway 55. Despite its proximity to town, the trails here wind through meadows, mature forest and offer scenic views reminiscent of a secluded backcountry setting. From a short pump track to the flowy drain trails and more technical traverses, Bear Basin is designed for all skill levels to enjoy. Trails are free to ride and are open during daylight hours from mid-May through mid-October as trail conditions and weather allow. Restrooms are available at the trailhead, but no other services are offered at this ride center.

Recommended Rides: Sleepy Hollow | Beginner A great little side trail off of the main drag that can be tied together with the main access route for a nice loop. Mountain Bikers and Dirt Bike Riders Team Up to Preserve Trails By McKenzie Kraemer Mountain bikers and dirt bike riders would seem an odd couple in most places. In McCall, these recreational enthusiasts have found common ground and formed a partnership to protect the riding areas they both love. This uncommon pairing got its start in 2016 when the Forest Service invited various user groups to collaborate on future forest use planning. The Central Idaho Mountain Bike Association (CIMBA) was partnered with dirt bike riders. Rather than present their differences, the group realized that they had a lot in common. “We looked at each other and realized that we both used the same trails and both wanted to ensure the preservation 30

of those trails, says Johanna Defoort, Treasurer of the Central Idaho Trail Riders Association (CITRA). So they decided to work together. From those meetings in 2016, CITRA was born. And since that time, CIMBA and CITRA have worked together to clear popular trails for all users to enjoy. Each Memorial Day the groups join forces for the South Fork clearing event. From there, trails are

“One of the most under-appreciated facts about dirt bikes riders is that we do more to clear trails than any other group combined,” says Defoort. This is because a dirt bike can access more trails and carry necessary equipment like chainsaws with ease. “Dirt bikes also pack out the trail due to their weight and help keep the vegetation down,” says Defoort.

cleared as the snow melts. CITRA has also adopted the Loon Lake trail system and maintains the three trails into the lake for hikers, mountain bikers and dirt bike riders alike.

On top of maintaining and preserving trails throughout the McCall area, this partnership has also helped to ease some of the stigma placed on dirt bike riders. “Dirt bike riders are unique in that they have very few designated trails,” says Defoort. “Hikers have dedicated hiking trails, mountain bikers have dedicated mountain biking trails, but the majority of trails for dirt bike riders are mixed use.” That means that riders are always cognizant of meeting other users on the trail. “I think there is an assumption that we are all just knuckleheads that go out to spin our tires and ruin trails, which couldn’t be further from the truth” says Defoort. In reality, Defoort says that most riders are out for the same reasons as any other outdoor recreationalists – to enjoy a good view, explore a new trail and get outside.

“For me, the challenge is also appealing,” says Defoort. “I haven’t mastered my riding skills yet, and probably never will, but I am always striving to be better.” Defoort says the adrenaline rush of pushing herself to try new obstacles keeps her coming back. “I also really love teaching my kids,” she says. “I will go ride with my

husband and he will give me tips then I turn around and take my daughter through obstacles that used to be really difficult for me and it is fun to see the progression and growth.” For new riders, Defoort’s number one recommendation is to find a bike that fits your riding skill and style. “Motorcycles are not built the same and you could easily hop on a bike that is overpowered for your skill level or too heavy for the type of trails you want to ride on.” Before hitting a trail, practice starting and stopping, using the brake and clutch, shifting, turning and balance. “There are a lot of moving pieces, so start slow,” says Defoort. She also recommends mountain biking. “A lot of the concepts are the same in terms of turning and balancing, so it is really helpful in learning dirt bike skills,” says Defoort. Once you have a bike, there is also protective gear to consider. “We like to ‘Power Ranger up,’” says Defoort. That includes motorcycle boots, protective pants with padding, a chest protector, elbow guards, gloves, and a helmet. If you opt for less gear, boots and a helmet are a must. One challenge for both new riders and experienced riders new to the area is knowing which trails are accessible for motorized use. “Sometimes it is difficult to tell when you leave Forest Service land and enter Idaho Department of Lands or even private property,” says Defoort. Road maps help, but most do not include topographic lines which can make it difficult to orient yourself. This is one area CITRA is hoping to focus on. “Aside from trail Continued page 28 31

clearing, our number one priority would be trail marking and education,” says Defoort. “As a recreation destination, we want people to come use our resources, but we also have to make sure we use them correctly so they will last.” One of the biggest benefits for Defoort and other riders is the accessibility of remote areas. “A trail like Krassel Knob is a 12-mile hike, so a dirt bike makes it much easier to get to,” says Defoort. “Being able to sit on top of that peak and look out at all of the South Fork below is so amazing.” And it is places like this, with stunning vistas and scenic trails, that keep Defoort and other riders coming back for more. “It makes me appreciate these special places and want to preserve and protect them,” says Defoort.

Recommended Trail: Loon Lake The Loon Lake Trail System offers three different routes, each appealing to different skill levels. From the Ruby Meadows Campground near Burgdorf, the Willow Basket Creek trail is for intermediate riders. From the Chinook Campground, the Loon Lake Trail offers and easier (and shorter) route to the lake while the Secesh River Trail will appeal to experienced riders. 32

In addition to the stunning scenery, Loon Lake was made famous as the site of a B-23 “Dragon Bomber” crash. During a heavy winter snowstorm in 1943, the plane made an emergency landing on the frozen lake and slid off into the timber. All eight crewmembers survived without major injury. With no sign of rescue, three crew members hiked 14 days and almost 42 miles in deep snow to the Lake Fork Guard Station. Everyone was successfully rescued shortly after.

From Two to Four Wheels

For those that prefer four wheels to two, the McCall area won’t leave you in the dust. Hundreds of miles of motorized dirt roads await. From climbing to stunning vantage points like Brundage and No Business Lookout or winding along the river to Yellow Pine, a scenic back road is easy to access. Bring your own or reserve a four or two-seat UTV from CM Backcountry Rentals. They provide the vehicle, helmets, goggles and a map to get you started. UTVs are street-legal on area city and county where the speed limit is 45 mph or less. That means you can leave directly from CM Backcountry and head to your adventure without having to trailer the UTVs.

Important notes about use on city and county roads:

34

• A brake light, headlight and taillight, horn audible for 200 feet and a mirror showing at least 200 feet behind the UTV is required for street use. • Must have a valid driver’s license, valid registered license plate, current OHV certificate and sticker (out-of-state vehicles can purchase for $12) and insurance to operate. • Anyone under 18 years of age must wear a DOT approved helmet.

critterstory

By McKenzie Kraemer It all started with Beulah the beautiful basset hound, a dog who needs stilts to keep her belly out of the snow. Long-time friends Niki LeClair and Janet Murphy love to get together to hike and cross-country ski in the great outdoors to inspire one another. It was on one of those hikes that Murphy was first introduced to Beulah. Murphy was taking a short story class and the friends got to talking. “Niki said she wrote a poem as a little girl and could recite it by heart,” says Murphy. “So, she shared Beulah with me and I started cracking up envisioning this basset hound on stilts.” That poem sparked an idea. “Janet looked at me and said ‘We have to write a kid’s book!’” says LeClair.

38

With the stories written, Murphy, a lifelong artist, brought the characters to life in watercolor. Most of the illustrations were inspired by LeClair’s photographs. For the images of a young Niki and her Palomino, Murphy used a photo from LeClair’s childhood. “The photo is about two inches tall and in black and white,” says Murphy, “so I added color and gave her cowboy boots, but this is the actual outfit she was wearing.” When it came to the horse, they wanted to match the little girl’s curls to the horse’s mane. “We worked really hard on the horse to get the swirls and overlays and color of the mane just right,” says Murphy.

With one story down, the pair set out to tell other critter stories. The book features four stories, two written by LeClair as a child and two new ones. “I Want A Horse” is a catchy song written by LeClair at age seven about her Palomino horse. When Murphy first heard the Palomino song she said it was stuck in her head for days. “Beulah the Beautiful Basset Hound” is the second story in the book, written by LeClair at the age of 10. The final two stories, “Sandhill Cranes” and “Feisty Fox,” are new creations inspired by the critters living around LeClair’s home.

Similarly, the cranes were inspired by photos taken right outside of LeClair’s home. “Niki and I were walking down the road to her house and I whispered at her to run back and get her camera,” says Murphy. She then used those photos to do a sketch of the neck from one and the wing from another and the tail from a different photo. “Then we would bring it all together and work side-by-side on each and every illustration until we both agreed on all of the details,” says Murphy.

“I wasn’t sure if I still had anything in me that was poetic,” says LeClair. She started keeping a journal and jotting down ideas as they came. “I would send them off to Janet and she would say ‘that sounds great!’ so I would continue to pursue it.”

The entire writing, illustrating and publishing process took two years. LeClair and Murphy were involved in all stages of the book’s production, including decisions about the final font choice and title. “I was adamant about all lowercase lettering,” says LeClair. “Our printing company pushed back on that and I reminded them that E.E. Cummings never used a capital letter and they couldn’t argue with that.” The title is also unique. “Critter” is

inspired by a close friend who always referred to the animals around her home as critters. Originally two words, critterstory evolved into one word and became a way to honor the memory of the friend who inspired them. The success of the book is due to both LeClair and Murphy’s dedication to every detail and to its universal appeal. “Everyone has their own critter story,” says LeClair. From young children to LeClair’s 94-year-old neighbor, the book is a hit with all ages. “We like to say this book is for ages one to 101,” says LeClair. They are now on their second printing of critterstory and working on a second book, critterstory 2. The second book will tell the story of Bobe and Bobette, two great horned owls that live near LeClair’s home, “Coyotes on the Run,” “The Grand Elk” and “Northbound Snow Geese.” While LeClair and Murphy have their own favorite characters and stories, they agree that the best part about creating critterstory was getting to work together on the project. “We inspire each other so much,” says Murphy. “To get out in nature and share what you love and inspire each other…that is the beauty of friendship.”

Look across the mirrored surface and feel the pleasant resistance as you pull your paddle through the water and hear the soft gurgle as you lift it and take the next stroke. You’re surrounded by evergreen forests rising from the mountain slopes, and rocky peaks patched with snow looming above. The white clouds high above look too perfect to be real, and a breeze turns the mirrored surface to shimmering quicksilver as you rhythmically cruise along with a gentle V-shape trailing behind you. The North Fork of the Payette River connects McCall, its surrounding peaks and the chain of lakes and reservoirs along its course. There’s water for placid flatwater paddling to white-knuckle, thrill rides capable of testing the world’s best whitewater boaters. The North Fork is also the heart of the Payette River Basin Water Trail. What is a water trail? It’s a designated route using water as a pathway. But before we get into that, let’s step back a little ways in time, and then a long ways. While the Payette River Basin Water Trail may be relatively new, the river’s early use as a trail dates back to the early 1800s and the river’s namesake, Francois Payette. He was a Canadian fur trader who traveled throughout the Payette River Basin representing the Hudson Bay Company. Continued page 42 45

Due to a geographic quirk, North Fork of the Payette River’s headwaters are surrounded on three sides by the Salmon River drainage, and while the North Fork flows south, rivers to the east and west, (Little Salmon and South Fork of the Salmon) flow north.

A lot has changed since then, but some hasn’t. The Payette River Basin still encompasses 3,000 square miles and ranges from the peaks north and west of McCall to the Sawtooth Mountains.

Dam building in the 1900s on the lower Payette River and in Hells Canyon blocked fish passage, so salmon and steelhead no longer migrate into the Payette River Basin. But development also had positive consequences. Building Idaho 55 on one side of the North Fork and a railroad on the other placed tons of boulders into the tight, steep section between Smiths Ferry and Banks and created some of the finest Class V whitewater in the U.S. But hike into the mountains surrounding the North Fork’s headwaters and you will see rugged, roadless backcountry that looks similar to what Francois would have seen when he first explored the massive Payette River Basin. The water trail segments provide opportunities to see a variety of what the North Fork and its lakes, reservoirs and tributaries offer. Here’s a sample of the diversity of boating and recreation the Payette River Basin Water Trail provides.

Payette Lake, Duck Bay to Downtown

Sometimes you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, and sometimes, you want to be part of it. You can paddle this 4-mile stretch in either direction, but here’s why you should consider north to south. You start at a boat launch in Ponderosa State Park’s placid Duck Bay, a scenic spot midway up the peninsula that makes up most of the park. You don’t have to go all the way to Duck Bay because there are several access spots so you can tailor your float to your time and energy. Continued page 44

After starting in Duck Bay, you paddle along the park’s timbered shoreline, which is lightly developed, mostly with paved paths and campsites. If it’s a weekend or peak summer, don’t expect perfectly smooth water. The lake is popular for powerboating and personal watercraft. There’s a 300-foot, no-wake zone around the shoreline, but you may still encounter some rolling water.

As you progress, the shoreline gets more developed, with docks, homes, marinas, condos, etc. But take all that as a benefit. Want to stop for a beer or other cold beverage? Swing by Mile High Marina near Legacy Park, or paddle onto the sandy beach and walk to a downtown restaurant for lunch or dinner (or breakfast if you’re one of those weird early risers). Most of all, just bask in the glory of a McCall summer day. It’s an experience that never gets old.

City of Cascade Float

Sometimes, you don’t want to overthink it, you want to enjoy a relaxing float on a river, and this section of the North Fork is a prime candidate. It’s 2.5 miles from bridge to bridge with a gentle current carrying you along. There’s a path along most of this route, which makes a bike shuttle a hassle-free option. There’s also a commercial shuttle available during summer. Start your float below the dam where the Idaho 55 bridge crosses the river on the north end of Cascade. You can take nearly any watercraft that’s suitable for moving water, including inner tubes. Try not to miss the second bridge downstream (spoiler alert: you can’t). That’s the take-out.

So why would this short, mostly flat float strike your fancy? It’s relaxing and casual. If you want to add a quick thrill, float through the waves at Kelly’s Whitewater Park, which has a series of man-made rapids and waves that are easy to navigate, or avoid by portaging. Have fun splashing in the waves? Get out, hike upstream on the path and do them again. Heck, do it as many times as you want. Not like you have hours of floating ahead of you, more like minutes. When you get to the take-out at the bridge, you’re within walking distance of cold drinks, burgers and other summer staples. This is what a casual float is all about, maximizing the fun on a warm summer day while minimizing the logistics.

To learn more about the Payette River Basin Water Trail go to payetteriverscenicbyway.org. You will also find a wealth of information in Steve Stuebner’s “Paddling the Payette,” which is a comprehensive guidebook of the whole basin. 50

Cabarton Whitewater

The Cabarton stretch of the North Fork is a cool whitewater section because it’s family friendly and great for whitewater rafters and kayakers. It starts west of Clear Creek store (near milepost 108 on Idaho 55). Turn west onto Cabarton Road to the put-in, and the float ends at Smiths Ferry. The 10-mile stretch has several Class III rapids, so it’s not for rank beginners, but boaters with whitewater experience find it fun and friendly. If you don’t know what Class III means, don’t float it unless you’re with an experienced whitewater boater, or an outfitter. The Cabarton is a classic “splash and giggle” float with great scenery. Shortly after you launch, the road disappears, and you’re floating through a forested canyon with a boulder-strewn shoreline for about 9 miles before crossing under the scenic Rainbow Bridge and the river flows alongside Idaho 55. The rapids are well spaced, so if there’s an unexpected flip or swim, you have plenty of time to pick up the pieces before the next rapid looms. The Cabarton also has a long floating season because during summer you get to ride irrigation water headed downstream from Lake Cascade to southwest Idaho agriculture fields. Beware, the river can run cold and swollen by snowmelt in June, so please take that into account. Even on a hot, sunny day, a cold, pushy river is more difficult to navigate, and a prolonged swim could be hazardous. A final word of caution: don’t even think about floating below Smiths Ferry. The North Fork turns into one of the most challenging and dangerous whitewater runs in Idaho.

Slice of Life:

McCall Area Comp! Let me hear you stomp! We’ve got grit, We’ve got pride, 1-2-3, let’s ride!

Hands clapping and feet stomping, this group cheer begins any gathering of the McCall Area Composite youth mountain bike team. With more than 80 studentathletes in 6th through 12th grade expected for the 2020 season, the team’s success and growth have begun to garner attention. The 2020 season will be the team’s sixth year in existence, and today the team is thirteen times larger than when it started with just six kids in 2015. In fact, the McCall program is now one of the four largest in the state. As a composite team, McCall Area Comp draws its athletes from McCall, Donnelly, New Meadows and Cascade. It is one of 28 teams in the nonprofit Idaho Interscholastic Cycling League (IICL), a statewide 56

organization that is part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, or NICA, the overseeing body for most school-aged competitive mountain biking teams in the U.S. During the season, which runs from July to mid-October, more than 1,000 student-athletes from across Idaho gather at a series of five regular season Continued page 54

races, with each team competing at four of them. The season culminates in a state championship attended by all teams. In 2019, the McCall team earned second place in Idaho for the season and won the State Championship race with the most points at that individual event. The wins were against large teams such as Boise and Eagle High Schools. At the core of the team’s culture is a focus on community, character development and personal improvement. Whether at a race or at one of its thrice-weekly practices, team pride and connection ring out loud and clear – as heard in the team cheer but also seen and felt in the coach-athlete interactions, the family involvement, the group camping at away races, and the way teammates cheer for each other. At the helm of the program is Head Coach and Team Director, Dean Cromwell, a semi-retired mechanical engineer who now devotes a large part of his time to organizing and leading the team – all on a volunteer basis. A former amateur road bike racer, Cromwell jumped aboard to help when the program first formed in McCall. By the team’s second year, the original founders were ready to move on and he took over. Cromwell’s commitment, leadership, thorough communication, and meticulous organization are 58

widely known in the community as the foundation of the group. Any parent and coach you talk to says that Cromwell’s devoted time and effort are invaluable. The tireless presence and support of Cromwell’s wife, Amy, is also noted by all involved, including Dean. And after five years of work leading the group, Cromwell’s 6th-grade son is finally old enough to join in 2020. His 9-year-old daughter will follow soon. In addition to Cromwell, more than 35 volunteer coaches (many of whom are team parents) donate several hours a week to attend practices and assist with team planning. All coaches—for any NICA team across the U.S.—must attain Level 1 certification, which includes a background check, risk management and athlete abuse awareness training among others. The head coach or team director of each program must have NICA’s Level 3 certification, which requires quite a bit more time and effort.

The McCall coaches run the gamut from highly experienced to enthusiastic but less skilled. They are united, however, in their goals to promote healthy, active lifestyles for kids and to foster a positive and encouraging environment that rewards hard work. “We really try to focus on trying your best and giving it everything you have. We want to celebrate the effort, not the result,” Cromwell says. “The level of improvement we see in kids from a skills and fitness perspective is just amazing.” Incoming sophomore Jamison Greaves, 14, experienced that firsthand. “When I started, I was out of shape and it was really hard. I was always in the back of the group. But Continued page 56

everyone was always cheering me on and I felt welcomed. It was super positive,” says Greaves. He has seen self-improvement in many areas, he says, including his riding and his social skills. “The team culture is the best part of the program,” says coach Matt Galyardt, whose son Gavin is in his fifth year on the team and was the Idaho Freshman state champion in 2019. “It’s a lifelong sport the whole family can enjoy together. It creates an inclusive environment where folks get to know each other better – student-athletes, coaches, and parents alike.” Galyardt says the key is keeping fun at the center of everything, but he also credits the mental toughness that the coaches instill. Cromwell agrees that the hard work the kids put in at practices is important.

“We want kids getting out of their comfort zone and maybe working harder mentally and physically than they have ever experienced before. There’s great value in building that grit and determination,” Cromwell says. “These are lessons that hopefully these kids take into the life ahead of them and know that when things get hard, as they invariably will, that they are a little more prepared to handle that struggle or those difficulties.” “The culture of the team is the most important thing to me and something we’ve really tried to foster and make better and better,” says Cromwell, who along with wife Amy also runs a nonprofit, the Payette River Bicycle Movement, that refurbishes and donates bikes to local children. “We’ve really started to see some success from a racing perspective the last couple years, but I feel like that’s just grown out of the culture.” NICA helps steer this culture as well. It is focused on being a youth development program using mountain biking to achieve its goals, not the other way around. It is also a strong proponent of service projects and positive youth activities and has begun to organize programs beyond racing such as its Teen Trail Corps. The McCall group organizes several of its own trail service days each season and won last year’s IICL award for the team that logged the most community service hours.

NICA, IICL and the McCall team also recognize that there can be barriers to entry in the sport of mountain biking and want every kid to have a chance to ride, so there are loaner bike programs as well as scholarships available.

members and coaches to ride together in their own groups. McCall Area Comp was 40% female in 2019, which was the second highest percentage of all teams in Idaho, according to IICL Director Eddie Freyer. “As we grow, we become a more and more diverse group, so it’s important we maintain our values on the team,” says Cromwell. “We want the new kids in the program to be just as stoked as the advanced kids who are winning races.” The team spirit department is often headed up by coach Sidney Bateman, who can usually be found at the center of the team cheers. She and her husband, Dave Bingaman, who is also a coach, have two daughters on the team. Bateman says she loves the relationships she forms with the kids and seeing them progress and grow.

“I can’t tell you how incredible it feels to have helped build these timid young kids to confident, independent individuals. They go from terrified at races to not being able to get enough,” says Bateman. I’ll do whatever I can to coax them to that starting line because I know that one race—that one challenging and intimidating experience—will benefit them for the rest of their lives.” She says the coaches are constantly evaluating the quality of the program and trying to improve, especially with how quickly it’s growing. “It’s NICA’s philosophy that we want kids to fall in love with the sport and carry it on for a lifetime, and we see that happening every day on the team,” she says. Cromwell says one of his favorite things is to hear the community feedback he often gets about how polite and helpful the team is out on the local trails. “I’d rather hear about that than about how great a kid did in a race,” he says. “If we’re learning how to be better humans on this team, that’s the most gratifying thing.”

Hot summer days call for refreshing flavors…and Rupert’s at Hotel McCall and Café 6 Three 4 have a few special recipes that meet the demand.

SAVOR RUPERT’S “BEET THE HEAT” There is a new bar in town! Rupert’s has been a staple stop for foodies and cocktail lovers alike for many years, but a major remodel of the bar space has upped their offerings in the liquor department. On top of an eclectic aesthetic that features pieces like a white marble bar top, an apothecary cabinet and open shelving to show off the bar’s offerings, Rupert’s has expanded the bar’s services as well. A new espresso machine serves up coffee-house favorites while rare selections have been added to the liquor list. That list now includes a new “flight” menu with selections like a rare Japanese whiskey flight, a bourbon flight, a scotch flight and a rye flight. Try this vibrant summer cocktail for an at-home version of Rupert’s mixology.

INGREDIENTS: 2 oz Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum 1 oz locally fresh squeezed beet juice from Deez Squeeze* 0.5 oz lemon juice 0.5 oz simple syrup

DIRECTIONS: Mix ingredients and serve in a rocks glass over a single ice cube. Garnish with a dehydrated red beet chip.

Stop by for a bite between 7am and 3pm or drop in at one of their open mic nights. If you want to enjoy a piece of Café 6 Three 4 at home, try the “Yummy” Sandwich, one of their most popular picks.

PLAN AHEAD

In the heat of summer, we can’t help but dream of champagne snow, creamy corduroy, and fresh powder stashes. When the snow starts to fall, McCall transforms into a winter wonderland…see what’s in store:

72

SNOWMOBILE With more than 500 miles of groomed trails, we promise you won’t be bored! Strike out on your own with your personal machines or rent them from one of our local businesses. You can also follow an experienced guide who can show riders of all abilities everything from gentle slopes to challenging hillsides that tempt even the most adventurous of the “high-markers.” Want to try something new? Snow biking is gaining traction in McCall and a great way to experience familiar terrain in a whole new way.

ALPINE SKI With three alpine ski areas, McCall is home to some of the finest Alpine skiing and snowboarding in the Northwest. Untracked powder, smooth corduroy, and plenty of terrain park features to keep you shredding. Want to explore beyond the boundaries? Access more than 20,000 acres of snow with a cat ski trip or adventure with Brundage SnowCat Adventures or Payette Powder Guides.

NORDIC, FAT BIKE & SNOWSHOE

When the sun shines in the winter, powder can play second fiddle to a fresh groomer…a staple for Nordic skiers and something McCall has plenty of. The rolling meadows and challenging hills winding through the trees offer unparalleled options. Looking for a new way to explore the winter trails? Hop on a fat tire bike and cruise through the packed snow. Want to trek into a winter wonderland? Snowshoes are a great way to blaze your own trail!

The entertainment heats up in the winter! Start with the Festival of Trees Thanksgiving weekend then cruise right into the holiday season with “Mountain Hollydays.” This two month extravaganza offers everything from wine tastings to shop local deals. In January, celebrate all things winter with the 10-day Winter Carnival and the Idaho Sled Dog Challenge followed by one of our favorite events in February, Destination:Beer.

DINING

Savor every bite! Our eateries, bistros and breweries offer the perfect après-adventure fare. Enjoy everything from fresh pastries and gourmet coffee to specialty hand-crafted beer and locally sourced meats and produce. Find tasty take-out, casual fine dining and adventurous dinner events—we have something for everyone.

FAMILY FUN

Photo

If cabin fever threatens, get the entire family out to play! Strap on the ice skates and hit up open skate at the Manchester Ice Center or ride up the magic carpet at the Activity Barn to fly down the hill on a snow tube. For a quick sledding adventure, try Legacy Park in downtown McCall. The gentle slope is perfect for the little ones! The area is also home to several hot springs perfect for warming up on a cold day.

“My husband and I have worked with Cindy and her team for several years. She recently sold our home in Jug Mountain Ranch and we couldn’t be more pleased with how the process turned out. Buying or selling in McCall can be very technical so having someone who has the experience and background in the area is key. Highly recommended!” Jen Colman “Steve Jones found us our dream home on the lake in McCall. Steve is the consummate Pro Realtor®.We have worked with Steve for the last 17 years both as buyers and sellers of real estate in McCall ID.” Barney Aldridge

Passing on the Tradition As the fall foliage emerges, so too does a new wardrobe preference…camo. Hunting is engrained in Idaho’s heritage and continues to be both a popular recreational activity and necessity for stocking freezers before winter. It is also a tradition that continues to be passed down through the generations. And the McCall area serves as a prime basecamp for hunting everything from elk to deer to turkey to bear. For Hayley Johnson, learning to hunt came later in life. She married an avid hunter, and loved the taste of elk, but resisted participating herself for many years. “It took me a really long time,” says Johnson. “I thought I would be someone who never shot a gun, but my husband wanted me to understand the mechanics of it so I wouldn’t be scared of them.” At 28 years old, and with their growing family needing more meat in the freezer, Johnson took the leap and completed a Hunters Education course. “Going through the class and being really well informed was empowering,” says Johnson. Since that time, Johnson has come to love hunting for the chance to get out into nature and disconnect as well as put quality meat on the table. But that doesn’t mean she takes it lightly. “When I am face-to-face with an elk or other big game, it can be hard to 84

pull the trigger,” she says. “But I know where these animals have been, I know they have lived a great life where they were able to roam free and I know that my family will get a huge benefit from the nutrients they will provide.” This respect for the process is now something Johnson and her husband are passing down to their daughters. “It is really important to be able to teach our kids about sustainability and help them understand where our food comes from,” she says. The kids help process the animals they harvest, from skinning to quartering and butchering, which Johnson says always turns into a bit of an anatomy class. “Involving them in the process has given them a better grasp on the circle of life concept,” says Johnson. “We use a lot of an animal, but what we don’t use is taken care of by other animals – nothing goes to waste.” While her girls are still young, Johnson says passing down these skills is important to her family. “We want to ensure that the girls are educated and involved so they can decide if they want to hunt for themselves as they get older…and continue the tradition.” For more information on Hunters Education classes, hunting seasons, and Idaho hunting rules and regulations, visit Idaho Fish and Game’s website: idfg.idaho.gov/hunt
