and Rory Mehen didn’t just own the Hartland Inn in New Meadows, they owned a piece of our hearts. They were active, involved kids at heart who were always ready to lend a hand, share a laugh, or race you to catch the first chair at Brundage Mountain on a powder day. While their lives were cut short, their light was not. They leave a legacy of friendship, stewardship, and hope for the future.

The McCall Area Chamber would like to humbly dedicate this issue of Visit McCall Magazine to the Mehen’s, and to their passion and support for the causes most near and dear to their hearts.

Sara was an animal lover and avid supporter of MCPAWS Animal Shelter. In her honor, a donation at mcpaws.org , an hour of volunteerism, or even a like and a share on the MCPAWS social channels makes a difference. Rory was invested in helping local youth grow positive connections within the community. He was the driving force behind the New Meadows Skate and Bike Park project, raising $250,000 to build this facility for all to experience. Learn a new sport and fall in love with winter again

There is a restlessness that sets in somewhere between late March and early April each year. Even the most die-hard snow lovers start to get antsy. People get a little more irritable and start to take a few more quick trips to lower elevations, seeking a glimpse of spring. There is no escaping the fact that winters are long here in the mountains.

And whether you are a long-time local or just visiting for a few days, being confined indoors is a sure-fire way to bring on those cabin fever feelings. But there is an easy solution…learn a new outdoor activity! There is something about learning a new sport as an adult that feels far more intimidating than it did when we were kids. So, we talked to some of our favorite instructors and guides about how to get started alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, ice fishing, and curling. Your school days may be long gone, but it is never too late to learn something new and rediscover your love of those long winter months.

Pro Tip: Lessons aren’t just for newbies. “As soon as you feel like there is something you aren’t able to do or if you are sore when you shouldn’t be or are feeling exhausted after three runs, it’s time to take a lesson,” says Morishita. Don’t wait. An instructor can help you continue learning and progressing so you can keep enjoying the sport. And as Morishita points out, “Michaela Shiffrin still has a coach!” You can, too.

Alpine Skiing

The big kahuna. For those who didn’t grow up around snowsports, the idea of learning to ski as an adult can be daunting. Watching little kids fly down the hill with no fear certainly doesn’t help lessen the intimidation factor; a 5-year-old definitely isn’t thinking about insurance premiums as they bomb through the trees. But getting the nerve to step into a pair of skis pays dividends in the winter fun department.

Colleen Morishita is the Assistant Snowsports Director at Brundage Mountain Resort and while instructing is now her full-time job, she didn’t learn to ski until she was 30. “I wanted to learn just to keep up with my kids, but because of taking that chance and learning to ski, I completely changed my life,” she says. After one lesson she was hooked, and it was all downhill from there (pun intended). The next year she joined the ski school and traded in her office job and high heels for instructing and ski boots.

So how did she take that initial leap and face the bunny hill at 30 years old? “First of all,” Morishita says, “there is no shame in the bunny hill!” It is where everyone learns. And after years of instructing, she has found that the key to overcoming first-time skier nerves is all about falling. “You have to know that you are going to fall and be okay with that,” says Morishita. Which is hard. “As adults we tend to avoid falling at all costs, but with something like skiing, falling is unavoidable and that can be hard to adjust to,” she says. Just know that you won’t be alone. Between 30 and 40 percent of lessons given at Brundage are for adults, and lessons really are the best way to learn.

“I had a great instructor once tell me that there really is no wrong way to ski,” says Morishita, “but there are techniques we teach that help people ski more efficiently and that usually means they can ski longer and have a lot of fun doing it.” Private lessons are a great way to get introduced to alpine skiing. For adults looking to learn, schedule a private lesson with an instructor or choose from one of the specialty lesson packages including the 50/50 Club and the 4x4 Learn to Ski + Ride program.

50/50 Club: Geared toward skiers and riders over the age of 50(ish). Sessions are held once a week for a six-week period and include a 90-minute lesson.

4x4 Learn to Ski + Ride: A multi-day program for beginners of all ages. The package includes four days of private lessons, four days of ski or snowboard rentals, and four days of lift tickets. At the end of your fourth session you get a season pass.

– then progress at the pace of the student. “One of the very first skills we work on is stopping,” says Morishita. “Being able to stop gives you so much confidence!” From there it is building one skill after another until what was once intimidating feels easy.

After you have booked that lesson and taken a first run down the bunny hill, the next challenge is equipment. Like a lot of other winter sports, skiing comes with some specific, and sometimes expensive, equipment requirements. “My best advice for anyone starting out is to either rent equipment or do a seasonal equipment lease,” says Morishita. This gives you an opportunity to “try before you buy” and test out different options before you commit to any equipment investment. But if you want to buy something, start with ski boots.

“Boots are the best investment you can make,” says Morishita. “Everything else is interchangeable, but if your boots are uncomfortable, you won’t have a good time.” Even better, you can get your boots professionally fitted at Home Town Sports, McCall Sports, or Gravity Sports for a customized, perfect fit.

Skiing

A lone skier gracefully glides down a trail, lost in thought and surrounded by the quiet of a snow-covered day. They soak in the solitude and stillness of the forest as they skate through the crisp winter air. Then, around the next turn, that idyllic serenity kicks over to exhilaration and speed as the trail takes a dive downhill. And that, says Lisa and Dan Ostermiller, is why they never get tired of Nordic skiing. “I love being in nature and it is so quiet,” says Lisa. “But it is also amazing exercise.” Dan agrees. “I really love being out in nature,” he says. “It is a really peaceful place to be…but I also love the downhill. It’s a challenge to stand on those skinny skis and go as fast as you want.”

And that, it seems, makes Nordic skiing the perfect sport for anyone. Whether you are after a leisurely ski to enjoy a bluebird day or an adrenaline rush, both are easily attainable – and it doesn’t require a full day commitment. “We both also love to powder ski,” says Dan, “so we often try to arrange our day so we can downhill ski in the mornings then Nordic ski in the afternoons.”

Which sounds like a perfect winter day to us…assuming you know how to Nordic ski. And if you have never clicked into a cross country ski, the allure of all the sport has to offer can’t diminish the awkwardness of standing on skinny skis for the first time. But Lisa and Dan say that shouldn’t stop you. “We really just invite you out to give it a try,” says Lisa. “Because there really is nothing like being on the snow.”

Pro Tip: Nordic areas around McCall are known for their flow and are garnering more and more attention for the diversity of terrain they offer. But it takes a lot of work hours and equipment to maintain the trails. Each area has different options for day and season passes. “I like to remind people to just be aware of the trail fees and make sure you have a pass,” says Lisa. “It really impacts our ability to maintain the quality of the trails.”

As with all things new, a lesson really is the best way to get a proper introduction to the sport. “I think classic skiing is a beautiful way to start,” says Lisa. “People are really familiar with the motion, so it is a great way to get comfortable balancing on skis.” The end goal of any lesson, says Lisa, is to get you out there to glide. “Once you get that glide down it really is magical.”

They also teach a lot of people to skate ski. “The motion of classic to skate ski is actually fairly similar, but there is mentally more intimidation with skate skiing,” says Lisa. But that is where you can really benefit from an instructor. “We can help you

master the skills, but we also have a lot of fun,” says Dan. Lisa agrees. “When we are both out giving a lesson, I can hear Dan laughing and I know he is having a blast out there.”

Along with great instructors like Dan and Lisa, there are a few essentials that can make a lesson even more enjoyable. “Wearing the right layers can make all the difference,” says Lisa. Whether you classic or skate ski, it doesn’t take a lot to get warm fast. “I recommend wearing a light layer underneath, a midweight insulating layer if the day is cold, and then topping that with an outer shell,” says Lisa. Then as you heat up, you can mix and match layers so you stay the perfect temperature.

For a lesson, renting equipment is the best way to go and like alpine skiing, boots that fit are the best investment you can make. If you are looking to purchase equipment, a knowledgeable retailer is the best place to start.

“There are lots of options and different equipment for classic and skate skiing,” says Lisa. And if you go to a place like a ski swap, just be sure to bring someone who Nordic skis with you. “It can be tricky to know what boots go with what bindings, so be sure to ask,” she says. That way you know the equipment you take home will work for you when you get out on the trail.

At first glance, ice fishing may not seem all that exciting. In fact, sitting on a frozen lake waiting for the fish to bite seems… cold. And boring? Until you talk to Chris Weber. You’d be hard pressed to find a more enthusiastic fisherman and his passion for the nuances and skill of ice fishing is contagious.

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Weber was lured (yep, we went there) to Idaho full time by the perch in Lake Cascade. “In the Midwest, a big perch is about 10 inches,” says Weber. “We always hear about this bucket list experience in Idaho where you can pull 16-plus inch perch out of the water.” Three years ago, he made his first trip out. “I was actually here to elk hunt, but by chance stopped at Tackle Toms and ended up fishing with a group of guys and caught a ton of fish.” He went back to Wisconsin with a great fish tale and a plan to bring his wife back to Cascade for ice fishing. After multiple trips and two-pound perch, he offered his guiding services to some fellow fisherman, not thinking it would amount to much. However, he soon got a call from Tamarack Resort looking for a full-time fishing guide and the stars aligned. Weber quit his job, he and his wife packed up and moved to Cascade, and in 2021 he spent his first winter as a fishing guide. So, what makes ice fishing worth leaving one life for another? For Weber, it is the endless variables that keep fishing on the

interesting and challenging. “If you think about open water

fishing, which I also love,” says Weber, “you basically cast a line out into a large expanse.” In contrast, with ice fishing, you can only fish out of the holes you drill into the ice. It requires precision. “You are basically fishing straight down, and you are targeting a very specific area. And once a fish swims by, you have to entice that fish to bite.” To do that requires technique and skill…and some luck. But those challenges are what make ice fishing so fun. Not to mention reeling in a fish is one of the more exciting experiences on the water, especially if it is a trophy-size perch.

Book A Trip

For newbies to the ice fishing realm, the best way to get hooked is to go with an experienced fisherman/ fisherwoman. A guide like Weber can get you started on the right foot. “My job is to eliminate all of those things that would make you uncomfortable so you can just enjoy fishing,” says Weber. It is also a great introduction to equipment, techniques, and local fishing holes.

A guided trip starts on shore. In most cases, getting to the fishing area includes a snowmobile ride across the lake, then setting up a home base for the day. “We put up a heated shack and it makes it a really nice environment to fish in,” says Weber. Often temps inside a shack can get up to 60 degrees. “Once we have a spot and have drilled some initial holes to fish from, we get the fishfinder out and get a great underwater view below us,” he says. And it is a setup like this that can make all the difference in a good first experience or a disappointing one. “Like all sports,” Weber says, “ice fishing requires some equipment, and you get out of it what you put into it.” While they can be more expensive, a gas or electric auger makes drilling through the ice much easier and tools like a fishfinder help you stay consistent and catch more fish.

“A guided trip can be a great way to get an introduction to the gear and equipment before you invest, especially if you are new to the sport,” says Weber. But going with a guide isn’t just for those new to the sport— it is also a great way to learn about a new area. “My wife and I have traveled to a lot of different places to fish and we love spending a day or a morning with a guide to get to know the water and what’s biting,” says Weber. “We are always happy to pay for local knowledge.” And that drive to keep learning, keep honing his skills, is another reason Weber loves to be on the water—frozen or not. “I love continuing to learn new techniques and finding new places to fish,” he says. “Every day is different.”

These guidelines are for new, clear, solid ice. But if something feels unsafe, err on the side of caution.

Pro Tip: Ice safety is a big deal when it comes to ice fishing. As a general rule, you can walk on the ice once it is four inches thick, but a snowmobile needs at least seven inches of ice. Idaho Fish and game has weekly reports on ice conditions – but keep in mind that lakes don’t freeze uniformly. “There are a lot of variables that can impact the ice,” says Weber. “One end of a lake may get a bigger snowfall than the other and that snow makes the ice really slushy.”

Curling

The object of the game is to slide granite stones (also called “rocks”) into the target area or the “house.” The “house” is comprised of three circles – a blue outer circle 12 feet in diameter, a white circle eight feet in diameter, and a red circle four feet in diameter. The team that gets their stones the closest to the center scores points according to the position of other rocks. For each stone “in the house” (or touching one of the circles of the target), and closer than their opponents, points are scored.

A curling match is played between two teams of four people and each team has eight stones. One team member will “pitch” the stone and two “sweepers” follow it down the ice using a broom ahead of the stone to alter its speed or curl its path. Teams take turns sending two stones each down the ice until all sixteen have been sent and then the round is scored.

Curling

Every four years when the winter Olympics roll around, curling enjoys a boost in popularity. Maybe it is because ordinarylooking folks make some extraordinary shots and become a gold, silver or bronze medalists. And while we sit engrossed cheering on the curling teams on television, it often doesn’t occur to us that we can learn to play this fun winter sport right here in McCall.

“I am a retired teacher and when my wife and I moved to McCall we were looking to meet some people,” says Bill Cleves. “We happened to see an ad in The Star-News about a ‘Learn to Curl’ event and decided to give it a try.” After one afternoon on the ice, they joined the McCall Curling Club and have been playing ever since. The Club meets every Sunday from December through March and hosts several Learn to Curl events throughout the season.

“The first time we played we knew absolutely nothing except for what we had seen watching the Olympics,” Cleaves says. During the Learn to Curl event, the purpose is really to get comfortable on the ice and introduce some basic techniques for throwing stones. The Club provides all the equipment, which makes curling a very easy sport to try with little upfront cost commitment.

“It is a great culture,” says Cleaves. “Everyone in the league helps everyone learn. Each team we played that first year helped us learn a bit more and by the end of the season we felt like we knew what we were doing.” Now it is their turn to help newcomers learn the game. “We love it because it is a fun, social way to spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon and a great way to meet people.”

For those looking to learn the art of curling, Cleaves recommends participating in one of the Learn to Curl events. “The one barrier when it comes to curling is ice time,” he says. “With all of the events and sports that share time at the ice rink, there are specific times the Club sets aside for curling.” Otherwise, it isn’t something you can drop by the rink and expect to do anytime.

If you plan to participate in Learn to Curl, the Club provides nearly everything—including the grippers and sliders needed for your shoes. “The one thing you need is comfortable clothes you can move in and stay warm in,” says Cleaves. “It can get cold standing on the ice for several hours, so layers are key.” One thing that doesn’t matter? Your age. “Last year we had curlers in their 20s and curlers in their 70s,” he says. “And while we can get competitive at times, most of us are there for the social aspect.” An afternoon of laughing, curling, and libations? Sign us up!

Dress for Winter Success

As the saying goes, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing choices.” In snow and ice, your clothing must keep you warm, keep you dry, and block the wind. For most winter sports, here is our go-to list for how to dress for success:

Base Layer: Socks, thermal underwear, undershirt. Choose a synthetic material/ blend (avoid 100% cotton) that will wick moisture away from your body. Socks (1 pair) should be thin and long enough to rise above your footwear (or ski boots).

Insulating Layer: Fleece or wool works very well as a middle layer. Depending on the temperature, you can also add a down vest or jacket as well, but keep in mind that down can heat you up quickly if you are active.

Outer Layer: Gloves, coat, pants. Waterproof and wind resistant is key.

Headwear: Helmets are the go-to for alpine skiing, but don’t forget a hat if you venture out for another winter adventure.

Eye & UV Protection: Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean the sun isn’t shining. Goggles, sunglasses, and sunscreen are must-haves!

It’s the news that McCall area hockey fans have been waiting for since 2018: Full contact adult hockey is returning to McCall this winter in the form of the rebooted McCall Mountaineers.

Starting in late October, the Mountaineers will play a 16-game season in a new league fashioned after the old “Black Diamond” league that boasted classic mountain town teams like the Sun Valley Suns and Jackson Hole Moose. The schedule will have the team traveling to destinations like Bozeman, Reno, and Sun Valley. Most importantly, they’ll be playing ten home games at McCall’s own Manchester Ice and Event Center.

While the original Mountaineer’s team put on a great show for hockey fans and netted a USA Hockey 30+ National Championship back in 2004, this next-gen Mountaineer team sports has a more modern, youthful hockey vibe.

For the most part, the 2004 roster was packed with veterans who had played out the peak years of their pro careers, then came back to the Idaho squad to play for the love of the game. Back then, players succeeded on hard work and grit.

Now, the game is more about speed and technique, and this new squad is full of talented young players who are fit, skilled, and hungry. Many of the new team’s standouts are collegiate players—the rising stars of Idaho youth hockey. Several of them, including Cam Gallagher and Dom Dumas, have played together in Boise or Coeur D’Alene programs since they were 6 or 7 years old.

“We all know how each other plays, who’s good at what, we get to know each other,” says Gallagher. “The chemistry is definitely there.”

“Every summer we’re all back in Idaho training, pushing each other to get better, so we have a lot of history,” adds Dumas.

With so many Mountaineers playing collegiate hockey, and one team member playing professionally in Germany, not every star player on the roster will be at every home game. Fortunately, a tenacious group of McCall locals is more than ready to fill the gaps.

Local players Steve Hughes, Brent Bergeron, Chase Cooney, Tyler Franco, and goalie Phil Reid hold their own on the ice and have quickly meshed with the younger group. The players bonded during an intense exhibition game in Reno last spring. They brought home a victory— and a new rivalry.

“Last spring, we showed up to Reno and they’d posted this article on their website saying that we were just this group of misfits from the comfy confines of Idaho,” says Gallagher. “They were just talking it up saying it was going to be an easy win for the Reno Ice Raiders. It was hilarious because we were like,

they’re obviously a little more reserved, but it’s awesome. After you play with someone and get to know them, you’ll have their back any day.”

Childhood training and shared battle scars aren’t the only thing that connects this team to each other and the community. Cam and Dom are second-generation Mountaineers, the sons of two of the original players, Brett Gallagher and Rob Dumas.

“I remember going to Winter Carnival, following my dad around,” recalls Dumas. “Then we’d be in the corner over there, playing mini sticks while our dads were on the ice.”

Cam plays for Boise State so his dad, Brett, comes to all his games. Dom plays for U Mass-Dartmouth. His dad, Rob, live streams his games on HockeyTV. So far, he hasn’t missed a single one.

“I think my dad coached me until I was 15 or 16 years old. Even now, after games, he’ll call me and say, ‘Well, what do you think?’ and we’ll talk about it. Both of our dads are not really our coaches anymore, but in many ways, they always will be,” says Dumas.

Dom’s dad, Rob, agrees. Rob still helps his son with conditioning training during the off-season and they check in with each other after every game.

“We both get excited,” says the elder Dumas. “We both celebrate the victories and go though the hard stuff since that’s what sports is all about.”

Rob coached most of the boys when they played youth hockey in Boise and says it’s been fun to watch them grow up and compete. Coming together to play on the Mountaineers is like a family reunion among two generations.

“I think the boys just love it. They all grew up together—it’s just a chance to get on the same team again like back when they were kids.”

While the passion for the game hasn’t changed with the shift in generations, the game itself has evolved substantially.

“When they played it wasn’t as much speed and skill as it is now,” says the younger Dumas. “It was more hard work and grit and there were a lot more fights.”

“During my era, there were two or three tough guys on every team,” says Dom’s dad. “If you weren’t paying attention, someone was going to hurt you. There was more

of an intimidation factor. That’s looked down on now. Cheap shots are discouraged, and the penalties can really change the outcome of the game.”

Several of the other original Mountaineers echoed those observations. Troy Edwards and Scott Davis helped rink manager John Barth put together the original Mountaineers team in the early 00s when the Manchester Ice and Event Center was brand new. They were playing senior level hockey at the time, and they saw the potential to create a McCall team based on what other ski towns like Sun Valley and Jackson Hole had going at the time.

Davis remembers the first game they played in McCall. “It was packed, it was sold out, beers were flowing, there was good energy. We were playing against Sun Valley and it was a pretty spirited game. There were a couple fights and the fans went crazy.”

20 years ago, they didn’t realize that what they were starting, that they would plant the seeds to grow a legitimate hockey culture here in McCall.

“People are a lot more hockey knowledgeable now. People used to go to a game to get a beer and occasionally watch. Now, people are watching and understand the nuances of the game. The McCall fan now has a way higher hockey IQ and is really going to appreciate this group

of players because they’re going to recognize quickly that there’s some pretty damn good players here,” says Davis.

“It’s been long enough now that the McCall community is developing players. Parents are coaching and they’re way more hockey savvy— it’s nice to see a whole generation that have grown up with hockey and are

Edwards and Davis are both nostalgic about the early years of the program, and excited to see their teammates’ kids grow up and succeed.

HOW TO HIT THE ICE:

McCall’s hockey culture is about so much more than just watching the Mountaineers play! Manchester Ice and Event Center offers several ways for boys, girls, and grownups to get involved in the sport.

Learn to Skate Classes are designed for varying levels of skill (including beginners) ages four and up. The group lessons focus on the fundamental skills of skating and are offered in several sessions between September and May. Kids can progress through several levels in these affordable group lessons.

Those ready for team play can sign up with the McCall Youth Hockey program. MYH is part of the Idaho Amateur Hockey Association’s Rocky Mountain District and offers student athletes 5-years-old though High School the chance to play friendly games and tournaments at home and regionally.

“I remember very vividly, Dom could hardly walk and he had this little stick, and he’d be stick handling around the rink while we were playing,” says Davis. “I can still see it. Now, he could light us up really well. It’s awesome.”

While the ‘older’ generation players all carry legitimate pro hockey pedigrees, there’s no lack of respect for the skill—and especially the speed—of this next generation.

“He’s a forward, I was a defenseman, so there’s that difference,” says Rob of Dom. “He’s a little taller, a little leaner, but he’s strong. He can fly. He’s a very smooth skater, he makes it look effortless. For it to come full circle, I think it’s phenomenal. I take great pride in it as a dad.”

Now, it’s Dom and Cam’s turn to shine on the ice (along with other standouts like CJ Walker and Auggie Kuzera), and while they both play competitive college hockey, they have a special place in their hearts for this community, this rink, and this team.

“McCall’s just a great town, they love hockey. If you’re here for a weekend and you can come catch a game after skiing, it’s just a great cherry on top,” says Gallagher.

“It’s awesome,” says Dom. “It’s a chance to get back to what we love most about the game and be what our dads were to us when we were little kids – it’ll be something special.”

And one more thing:

Small Town Big Time

It is 4am and Mary Gilson is already up checking emails and placing purchase orders. While her lovely shop, Backcountry Boutique, won’t open until 10:30am, she will have put in a full day’s work before the first customer walks through the door.

A few blocks away at Bella Kitchen, a new freight delivery has arrived. Opening box after box of merchandise, unwrapping, organizing, cleaning, pricing, and displaying the new products is hard work. “It can be a slog,” says Lisa Wood, owner of Bella Kitchen, “even if you are excited about the products you are unpacking. If you ask my employees if they love this job, they will say half of it…everything but freight!”

It is easy to stop into Backcountry Boutique, Bella Kitchen, or one of the dozens of locally owned businesses in town and be so dazzled by the enticing displays and welcoming ambiance that the hours of dedication behind the scenes go largely unnoticed.

Behind every storefront, every cash register, there is a level of commitment and dedication that is extraordinary…and a story that makes each of these local businesses unique. “When you think about all of the people that own businesses in this town,” says Wood, “there is no ‘man on the hill’ here. In every store you will find the owner’s presence.”

We set out to get an idea of what goes on behind the scenes and bring just a taste of what owning a small business in McCall is really like.

Backcountry Boutique | The “new” kid on the block

Backcountry Boutique started as a leap of faith. “We moved to McCall planning to purchase a completely different business,” says Gilson. When that fell through it left her wondering what other options there might be. “My husband asked me what was missing locally, what kind of things I wanted to buy but couldn’t.” And that sparked the idea for a clothing store. “My daughter was getting older and not in kid sizes anymore, but not a women’s size either,” she says, “and I was looking for clothing myself without having to go to Boise.”

So, with no experience in retail or business ownership, Gilson immersed herself in learning everything she could. “Before I opened the store, I had been a housewife and a homeschooling mom,” she says. “I honestly thought fashion was stupid, I didn’t understand why anyone would buy something that wasn’t completely practical.” But in navigating the ups and downs of bringing Backcountry Boutique to life, Gilson has realized that although she owns a clothing store, the clothes and fashion are secondary. “It is really about people,” she says. “It is about relationships.

It is about being welcoming to all and helping someone find something that makes them feel happy and confident.”

After three years in business, Gilson says it really feels like they are finding the right mix of products that best serve their customers.

“I try to find things that flatter most body types and hit a middle price point without sacrificing quality,” she says. “No one wants to find something they love only to have it fall apart on them a few months later.” But it has to be unique as well. “It is easy to find a pair of black boots,” she says. “But a pair of black boots with a little fun detail nobody else has is the type of thing we look for. Something you just can’t resist buying.”

Paired with her diligence sourcing from companies she trusts, Gilson also takes her cues directly from her customers and is curating clothing, shoes, accessories, and more to align with her ultimate goal. “We want people to be excited, and feel pretty and trust us,” she says. “Making a connection is what it is all about.”

A connection she hopes lasts for years to come. “I look at other local businesses like Bella Kitchen who are celebrating 20 years and it is such an incredible thing,” says Gilson.

“I can’t even imagine where Backcountry Boutique may be in 20 years – the relationships we will continue to build, what the store will look like, how it might change.”

With her daughter, Grace, working alongside her to build Backcountry Boutique, a great mix of merchandise, amazing customer service, and a loyal customer base, we know great things are in store.

Bella Kitchen | Celebrating 20 years

Lisa Wood didn’t start out as an entrepreneur. “I spent the first part of my adult life bartending and waiting tables,” she says. “I was raising kids in my 20s and was 35 when I graduated from college with a business degree.” After graduating she and her family moved from Boise to McCall and Wood took a job with the county as a juvenile probation officer. After seven years, she knew it was time for a change and took a chance at opening a business of her own.

Bella Kitchen opened in 2002 and Wood set up shop in the space Bistro 45 now uses as an auxiliary meeting room. “It was tiny, just 500 square feet,” she says. But it was perfect. “I had this idea about how I wanted Bella Kitchen to be a gift store with a kitchen theme, not just a kitchen supply store.”

When it came to sourcing the products for her store, Wood says she had some general ideas about where to start from her food service and hospitality days. But at the end of the day, she just filled her store with what appealed to her. “I honestly just find things that speak to me, the things that I like myself,” says Wood. “I am definitely not a decorator, but I have learned over the years what people like and how they want to shop.” Which means they no longer carry any bath accessories, but they do carry a lot of wooden bowls. “People love wooden trays and bowls…and foxes,” she says. “There is something about foxes that everyone loves.”

And while the inventory may change, the experience doesn’t. “Our customers are fabulous, fantastic people,” she says. “We want everyone to feel welcome and when they come in, we provide an environment that is super welcoming and happy.” Which means no pressure sales or any type of commission. “If you don’t want the pots and pans, we are good with that,” she says. “We just want you to have a lovely time in the store.”

Whenever she hears anyone say, “I love this store” or “we always come here when we are in town,” it is an affirmation to keep doing what she is doing. But the best compliment?

“You always have what I need.”

Wood’s knack for knowing just what her customers need (or didn’t know they needed) has built Bella Kitchen into a success. Which is impressive for someone who does not consider herself to be a whizz in the kitchen. “I am a decent cook, but not at all an expert,” says Wood. “Aside from the occasional pie I don’t bake at all, and I have never canned anything. We eat a lot of tacos. A lot of tacos. So, no fancy French sauces for us.”

As for the future of Bella Kitchen, Wood says she is keeping her eye out for a store manager that may one day want to work toward ownership. “The saddest thing would be if in the end, it just closed,” she says. “I think people would really miss it. And I am just so proud of this shop.”

Calling All Creatives

If you’ve been into any of McCall’s galleries, toured our public art scene, took part in one of the numerous paint and sips throughout the summer, or been to a McCall Arts and Humanities play, you know that art and creativity plays a special part in our community. To us, being creative isn’t just a way to pass the time when we start to get cabin fever— it’s a way to learn something new and expand horizons, a way to get to know yourself and bond with others in the community. Put simply, it’s a daily part of our lives whether we’re getting creative mountain gardening, listening to local music, or de-stressing with some watercolors after a long day.

It’s therefore no surprise that when the Idaho Commission on the Arts began investing resources to develop the first regional creative district in Idaho in 2019, the West Central Mountains was singled out for our high potential. Potential doesn’t always equal success, but fast-forward to 2022, and the West Central Mountains Creative District, or WCMCD for short, is steadily growing. Driven by the Action Team, which consists of members Renee Silvus, Delta James, Rachel Morton, Robin Fahle Olgren, and Idaho Commission on the Arts representatives Alison Espindola and Michael Faison, the district has already striven to bring together creatives from across the valley, promote resource and education sharing, and increase visibility of regional artists.

Though the action team works hard to bring the area new events and ideas, a creative district’s strength is truly found in its members. A large part of the Creative District’s efforts have recently been focused on their directory, where anyone can “Count Yourself Creative.” This GIS tool, built by local creative Kara Utter with Dynamic Visions GIS, allows individuals to build their own profiles including photos, descriptions, links, and contact information. Profiles are displayed on the Creative District website for other artists and community members to reach out to for sales, commissions, events, displays, and more.

On the directory, you can find over 40 artists from across the West Central Mountains, from writers, luthiers, and fine artists, to cooks, educators, and sex coaches, there’s no end to the creative avenues of the west central mountains. Many of the works reflect our area’s natural resources and beauty— there are rocky mountains, glimmering blues, foresty greens, and wildlife shots. But more than that, the growing directory shows a community of artists and creators who are looking for connections, who are searching for community they had previously lacked.

It’s no secret that people often wear a lot of “hats” in our community. Even if you are not a full-time artist or do not sell your work, you can still Count Yourself Creative on the directory. The WCMCD aims to “recognize the creatives in the garages, living rooms, kitchens, and gardens and be able to celebrate on a regional level so we can share resources, make a good impact on the economy, and celebrate what’s unique about our area” said

Action Team Member and City of McCall Economic Planner, Delta James at the recent West Central Mountains Economic Development Council Summit in October. With an aim to connect local businesses, non-profits, and community leaders within our region, the summit was the perfect opportunity for the WCMCD to show how art can impact local economies and show off our regional artistic assets. Five local artists, including McCall Made co-founder Jenni Ritch and Fabrications owner Thea Belecz, were accepted to display in this community summit and more events with display opportunities are well on the way as the Creative District establishes itself.

According to the WCMCD, a creative district “is a way to identify, promote, and grow the creative people, products, and places of an area.” Our creative district is therefore defined by the community members and artists of the West Central Mountains- those of us who live and work in New Meadows, McCall, Donnelly, Cascade, and everywhere in between. While the creative district is just starting out, the WCMCD’s goal is to promote creativity in all forms and encourage positive educational and social interactions within our region.

What does this mean for local creatives? As the West Central Mountains Creative District continues to grow, artists can expect to see increased and expanded visibility, sales, networking, problem-solving, and shared resources, as well as more

opportunities for new trainings, resources, and tools. What does this mean for the rest of us? We can live, work, and visit a place that puts emphasis on beauty, education, and community, one that has been mindfully molded by community members who put creativity first.

Currently, the WCMCD holds Creative Meetings every 4th Monday at 1:30pm via zoom to brainstorm about current projects, events, hopes, and pitches. They also plan quarterly creative networking meetings with an emphasis on community-building and ideation to allow local creatives to build their own goals and missions moving forward.

This issue, we’re featuring new offerings in high-profile locations as well as several businesses that exemplify the all-important entrepreneurial spirit of our mountain communities.

Drift West

McCall has a new fly shop— and it’s only a stone’s throw from Payette Lake. Though they just opened this summer, Drift West is already creating a lot of buzz for fishing in the area. Their shop on Lake Street has already become a key stop for visitors and locals alike, and their following is quickly growing.

Drift West sees its role in the community as more than a fly shop and welcoming retail location, says manager Franklin Dyer. The company is also a booking agency, and they hope their bright, charming shop will become a gathering area for the local fishing community.

Drift West offers several ways for beginners to break into the sport, from formal flyfishing classes to casual advice on what’s biting where. They also work with multiple local and regional guide services to help you find the best type of trip to match your personal angling aspirations. The outfitters they partner with hold permits to guide across the area— from the Snake River to Yellow Pine and everywhere in between. Guests have the option to fish for bass, trout, salmon, or steelhead, depending on the location and season, and the guides have the know-how to make the trip a successful one.

On the retail side, Drift West is focused on both fashion and function. They offer everything you need to get set up for a fishing outing—but also some quality outdoor lifestyle clothing, like Duck Camp and Haller Bros, that you can comfortably wear around town.

Dyer says Drift West’s ultimate goal is to adapt to the local fishing community’s wants and needs; because while McCall is not generally considered a ‘destination fishery’, there is a ton of good fishing around here. “But you have to find it,” says Dyer. “While we won’t give you all the locations, we’ll send you somewhere you can be successful.”

Whether you’re looking to get local fishing tips, just beginning your fly fishing journey, or shopping for gear and clothing, Drift West has your back. “You can get your stuff here, you can talk about it, you can go out with our partners. OR, you can just come in and share fishing stories. We spend a lot of time just talking about fishing.”

Nordic Inn

Originally built in the 1970’s, the two-story log hotel located on Third Street has been a part of McCall’s downtown landscape for nearly half a century. Throughout the years, this iconic building has been remodeled and renamed several times. Last spring the

beloved hotel underwent its most dramatic transformation yet, and adopted a fitting new name to go with it: Nordic Inn.

The hotel’s current owners—4th generation Idahoans who also own McCall’s Scandia Inn and McCall Lake Cruises—decided to beautify the iconic building using bold black stain, barnwood shiplap accents, and rusted patina metal signage. This new exterior has already caught the eye of many a visitor, and represents a welcome change to McCall’s downtown scenery.

Brunchette On the Lake

McCall’s charming collection of restaurants got a fresh new addition this year when Brunchette on the Lake joined the breakfast scene. The Brunchette concept was created to bring locally-sourced food to the table while providing a fun and vibrant dining

To launch in McCall, owner Boomer Godsill says the first hurdle was to find a great location. They chose a lakefront spot in the Waterfront Building downtown and completely remodeled the ground-floor space into a cozy, charming, and modern eatery. The menu features everything from classic breakfast dishes and lunch fare to signature items like a prosciutto and fig goat cheese omelet.

There’s a whole section of the menu devoted to the many Brunchette variations on eggs benedict—they have five different types of hollandaise sauce—with each providing a unique flavor profile.

Brunchette also offers gluten-friendly, keto, and vegan options, as well as a special ‘birthday’ menu that allows diners to pick one free item on their birthday (they also provide a tiara, sash, and birthday serenade).

“We try to focus on every aspect of eating at a restaurant,” says Godsill. “It’s not just the food, it’s not just the atmosphere, it’s not just the prices, everything wraps into one to create the experience. Moving forward, Brunchette plans to add more lakefront amenities, with a larger patio, a Victorian-style greenhouse, and private brunch cruises all on the wish list. In the meantime, stop in and grab a mimosa, or grab some friends, order a whole ‘mimosa tree’ and enjoy this fresh new lakefront dining option.

Payette Pedal Party

There’s a fun new way to enjoy summers on Payette Lake, and credit goes to 2010 McCallDonnelly High School grad, Sarah Lenda. This summer, Lenda launched the Payette Pedal Party with a specially designed boat, allowing passengers to motor around the lake with their own pedal power! (Don’t worry, if you and your crew get tired there’s also an engine for backup).

Growing up in McCall, Lenda worked a variety of jobs throughout the restaurant and recreation industries, including summers at Mile High Marina. That’s a big part of why she knew a pedal boat would be a great addition to McCall’s lake activities. Her 90-minute tours, launched from Art Roberts Park, can head either direction on the south shore of the lake. The tours are light-hearted, affordable, and a novel way for those without a boating background to safely enjoy the beauty and scenery of the lake.

“There’s not one person who comes on board who doesn’t have a smile and isn’t laughing,” says Lenda. “It’s just a fun way to get out there and enjoy yourself.”

You can book the entire boat for a private event or book a seat on a public trip. One of the special things Lenda offered during her maiden season was a Local’s Appreciation Day every Tuesday, where McCall locals got to ride for half price. “I know how it gets in the summertime when everybody’s working doubles, they’re really exhausted, they get in the routine of work-eat-sleep-repeat and you don’t get to enjoy yourself,” says Lenda. “People come here to play and have fun, so the idea was to give locals that opportunity to come out and have a little bit of fun and make it affordable.”

Friends of Weiser River Trail

For those who prefer to do their pedaling on dry land, one of our newest non-profit members is the quiet force behind Idaho’s longest rail trail, which runs 84 miles from Rubicon (near New Meadows) to Weiser. The trail opened in 1998 after the Union Pacific Railroad decommissioned the railbed and handed ownership over to the Friends of the Weiser River Trail.

The southern part of the trail features rolling hills and open canyons topped with black lava cliffs, while the northern section winds through forested canyons and alpine meadows. Wildlife often seen along the trail include deer, elk, great blue herons, bear, waterfowl, raptors, and wild turkeys. The trail is most popular with bikers and bikepackers, but is also open to horses, hikers, and some lower-powered e-bikes.

This stunning recreational trail is self-funded by member donations and grants. A single employee, a Habitat Manager, and assorted contractors provide repairs and construction as needed.

Unlike some rail trails, the Weiser River Trail offers a glimpse of the way the area might have looked when Lewis and Clark first explored the Northwest. It also offers an economic boost to

Jump in, dive in, or wade in! The West Central Mountains of Idaho are teeming with lakes… more than 300 of them. Our largest lakes, Payette Lake and Lake Cascade, offer swimming, sailing, waterskiing, wakesurfing, jet skiing, canoeing, kayaking, and stand up paddle boarding. Rentals are available for just about any activity you have in mind.

SINGLETRACK SCENE

The McCall area is ripe with miles of single and double track trails for all abilities and has been designated as a Silver Ride Center by the International Mountain Biking Association. Hitch a ride to the top with lift-serviced mountain biking at Brundage Mountain Resort and Tamarack Resort or take advantage of the shuttle service at Jug Mountain Ranch. If you would rather take the trail less traveled, stop by mccallchamber.org and view our Mountain Biking itinerary with fresh ideas for easy, intermediate, and expert rides around the region including CIMBA’s Payette Lake Trail.

TAKE A HIKE

Hiking is hands down one of the most popular activities in McCall. There are a huge variety of trails to explore around the area. Only have an hour? No problem, we have a trail for that. Want to turn a hike into a day-long adventure? We have that covered, too. And the scenery is epic no matter which trail you take.

The patio is open! One of our favorite things about warm sunny days in McCall is dining al fresco and sampling the delicious fare of our local restaurants, bistros, and pubs. Just about every eatery has a place to take advantage of the sunshine—or pick up something to go and picnic at Legacy Park along the shores of Payette Lake. Our local Farmers Markets are also open each summer and provide a great place to find fresh local produce, meat, and baked goods.

Jug Mountain Ranch offers every golfer, social or competitive, gorgeous panoramic views of Jughandle Mountain, the Ranch’s natural wetlands, old growth forests, and the rolling hills of the East Valley. The prestigious Whitetail Club and Resort offers an inspiring mountain masterpiece, while MeadowCreek Resort in Meadows Valley brings brilliant play and ample friendliness.
