Muscatine is one of a kind, the only city in the world that bears its name. But before the town became a one-and-only, it was known as “Casey’s Woodpile” because Mississippi River steamboats stopped to restock, and after that it was renamed “Bloomington” until 1850. Since then, Muscatine has been referred to as the “Melon City” for its unique melons grown on Muscatine Island. Just as much as any nickname, the town’s been called the “Pearl Button Capital of the World” for producing 1.5 million pearl buttons annually 100 years ago. The “Pearl City” and the rest of Muscatine County has been known for its industry ever since, with numerous large companies calling the area home. CIVIL WAR MONUMENTS AND MARKERS: In 1861, at the beginning of the Civil War, Muscatine men hurried to enlist and Muscatine sent more men to war than any other county in Iowa. Later, in April of 1862, the casualty list from the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee touched every neighborhood in the city. For 50 years, the city celebrated Shiloh Day. Muscatine still remembers. Deep Lakes Park Fish, canoe, kayak, hike, explore and more at Deep Lakes Park. This 435-acre park, donated to Muscatine County by longtime sand and gravel business W.G. Block, is still referred to by locals as “the sand pits” and includes 130 acres of fishable water, including numerous small lakes and ponds with the largest lake totaling 55 acres. Amenities and facilities include parking lots, restrooms, a boat ramp on Lake Chester and Lake Jewel as well as access for canoes, kayaks and small boats. Deep Lakes Park is in its third year of a multiyear development plan. Future plans include trails, RV and primitive camping, rental cabins and a swimming beach. Discovery Park and Environmental Learning Center Walk or bike the 1.5 miles of paved trails or the 2 miles of mowed trails, fish from the stocked ponds, stop by the outdoor raptor enclosure or visit the Environmental Learning Center, all in the 85-acre natural park in an urban environment. The Environmental Learning Center offers numerous natural history exhibits, two 1,200-gallon aquariums with native fish, live reptiles and amphibians, more than 100 mounted animals and is the home to the Muscatine County Conservation Board office. Fairport Fish Hatchery The large fisherman eagle tree trunk sculptures will welcome you when you arrive at the Fairport Fish Hatchery, located 8 miles east of Muscatine on Highway 22, a scenic section of the Great River Road. With 18 ponds, this facility hatches and grows largemouth bass and bluegill to stock in Iowa lakes. Walleye are raised for stocking Iowa’s interior rivers. The hatchery was established in 1908 and started out as a freshwater mussel research and propagation station to contribute to the local pearl button industry. It became a fish hatchery in 1929. Fuller Park Disc Golf Course Looking for a fun, free activity? This 18-hole disc golf course is located in Fuller Park and accommodates players of all skill levels with wide-open shots for the first-time recreational player and more difficult holes for the challenge-seekers. You will find yourself going up and down hills and across bridges in this wooded course. Fuller Park offers ample parking, a picnic shelter, a playground, restrooms, signage and benches throughout the park. Great River Road The Great River Road is a collection of state and local roads that follow the course of the Mississippi River through 10 states from Ontario to the Gulf of Mexico. Developed in 1938, the road is 2,340 miles designated with a green-and-white sign showing a river steamboat inside a pilot wheel with the name of the state or province. Muscatine holds a special fondness for the Great River Road as Muscatine native and entrepreneur Charles H. Young worked toward establishing the Great River Road and according to some, the idea for the green and white pilot wheel marker distinguishing the route is attributed to Young. Take a moment to enjoy the view at the Mark Twain Overlook (100-198 Lombard St. Muscatine) located by the entrance to the Norbert F. Beckey Bridge close to downtown Muscatine. Kent-Stein Park Kent-Stein Park is a 66-acre home run of a sports complex that welcomes about 100,000 visitors each year. The park has eight lighted baseball diamonds (including historic Tom Bruner Field), nine lighted softball diamonds, night lighted horseshoe courts, two concession stands, picnic areas, restroom facilities, walking/biking trails and fishing in the adjoining 11-acre slough. The park hosts events sponsored by national, state and local associations involving participants of all ages. Lock and Dam No. 16 A great place to sit and enjoy the Mississippi River, Lock and Dam No. 16 is located on the Illinois side of the Mississippi. Watch the barges pass through the channel and make sure to stop during the winter as it’s the best place to see bald eagles. They come to fish in this area of the river as it rarely freezes due to constant churning of the waters passing through the dam. During the spring and fall seasons, you can also find a significant amount of pelicans frequenting this popular fishing hole while migrating through Iowa for the seasons. Watch from the observation deck or grab a picnic table, which are open year round. Maid-Rite Diner Have a Maid-Rite sandwich in the town where it was invented. The first legendary loosemeat sandwich was created in 1926 by Muscatine butcher Fred Angell, who combined a special cut and grind of meat with selected spices. As the legend goes, Angell asked a delivery man to taste his “newest sandwich invention.” After a few bites the taster exclaimed, “You know, Fred, this sandwich is made right!” Some believe Fred chose the “Maid” spelling to represent the wholesomeness and pureness of the sandwich. Mairet’s Garden Center Looking for that famous Muscatine Melon? You can find it at Mairet’s Garden Center, one of the last remaining growers. Monsanto Butterfly Garden Open to the public, the Monsanto Butterfly Garden attracts many pollinators with an array of brightly colored flowers and shrubs that bloom from early spring until fall. Plant employees planted 65 acres of native grasses and wildflowers with the assistance of the Muscatine County Conservation Board in 1993 and an additional 90 acres were added to the prairie in 1998, including a butterfly garden. Muscatine Aquatic Center Soak up the sun at the Muscatine Aquatic Center, located inside picturesque Weed Park, and have some fun with five slides (two drop slides, one family slide and two long slides), a zero-depth entry area, and an interactive play structure with kid slide and spray features. Muscatine Arboretum Take a walk, bring your four-legged friends and look at more than 1,000 native and ornamental trees and shrubs that have been planted, mulched and labeled. Muscatine Art Center Built in 1908, the Laura Musser Mansion — part of the Muscatine Art Center — provides an elegant setting for the display of fine and decorative arts. The mansion’s hallways feature an impressive collection of works by artists such as Renoir, Degas, Chagall and Pissarro. Period rooms blend family furnishings with paintings that depict the Mississippi River. Linked to the original mansion is the Stanley Gallery which provides two floors of space for changing exhibitions. Located on the grounds is a historic Japanese Garden installed in 1929, which serves as a beautiful venue for weddings. Walk-in visitors are welcome Tuesday through Sunday with admission by donation. Muscatine History and Industry Center Experience the Muscatine that was the “Pearl Button Capital of the World,” a story proudly told by the Muscatine History and Industry Center’s Pearl Button Museum. Muscatine produced 1.5 billion pearl buttons annually 100 years ago and sold them to the New York garment industry and the rest of the world. Learn about how Muscatine is still a thriving manufacturing and entrepreneurial center on the second level of the center through interactive displays on 1940s and 1950s industrial giants like C. Maxwell Stanley, Roy J. Carver, S.G. Stein and Stanley M. Howe, who led to the manufacturing of products like office furniture, retread tires and corn product processing. Muscatine Municipal Boat Harbor and Marina Ditch the traffic and dock your watercraft on the riverfront at the Muscatine Municipal Boat Harbor and Marina located by Riverside Park on the Mississippi River. The harbor has 18 slips for houseboats and 64 slips dedicated for smaller, pleasure and speed boats. There are slips available for rent for the current season. Transient slips are available. Muscatine Municipal Golf Course Hit your golf ball over the water on No. 13 or test your leg strength on a par 5 on the FootGolf course. The Muscatine Municipal Golf Course, referred to as “Muni” by the locals, offers an 18-hole traditional golf course and an 18-hole FootGolf — a combination of soccer and golf — course, installed in fall 2014. The course also has a complete pro shop, concession area, cart rental and driving range. Private and group golf lessons are available. In the winter, play a round on the golf simulator and make sure your game is ready for summer. Muscatine Skate Park Whether you’re a skateboarder, rollerblader or BMX biker, the Muscatine Skate Park is yours for the shredding. This park is located within Musser Park and includes a flat track, a fenced area with a 100-by-100-foot stunt area and a 90-by-50-foot in-line hockey rink. Muscatine Soccer Complex Ramona Barber, organizer of the College Search Kickoff — an annual showcase that hosts about 100 youth teams from 10-plus states — called the fields at the Muscatine Soccer Complex “superb” and “unmatchable.” The complex is a 41-acre, $3.8 million facility that has earned national recognition, being named “Best Soccer Facility” by the National Turf Grass Managers Association. With eight full-sized state-of-the-art premiere soccer fields — and two of the eight internationally sized and lighted with amended soils — this facility welcomes about 100,000 visitors annually and hosts events sponsored by national, state and local associations involving participants of all ages. Nature Conservancy Preserves The White Oak Swamp, the Red Cedar Woodland, and Greiner Family Preserves are three Muscatine County natural areas that are part of the Nature Conservancy, an international organization whose mission is “to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends.” These preserves are a wonderland for naturalists. The 654-acre White Oak Swamp Preserve is habitat for an estimated 500 plant species as well as some endangered animal species. The very unique 34-acre Red Cedar Woodland Preserve is found on an island in the Cedar River and can only be reached by boat or by wading through water. The 117-acre Greiner Family Nature Preserve is a sand prairie and wetland area, a unique combination of soil and water essential to nesting turtles and supporting an assemblage of rare plants and animals. 319-726-3041 www.nature.org

Norbert F. Beckey Bridge After enjoying the beautiful river views in the daylight, be sure to take a look at the Norbert F. Beckey Bridge — the only bridge over the Mississippi River that has LED lights. Completed in December 1972, it replaced the Muscatine High Bridge, which stood from 18911973. A pillar from the old High Bridge still stands at Riverside Park in Muscatine. The bridge, which stretches 1,500 feet from Iowa to Rock Island County, Illinois, across the Mississippi River, is awash in a rainbow of colors and lights up the night. Mark Twain might have seen his most beautiful sunsets in Muscatine, but modern residents and visitors to this historic river town now have their own light show to enjoy. Oscar Grossheim Photo Collection More than 55,000 glass plate negatives of historical photos taken by Muscatine resident and photographer Oscar Grossheim are included in this collection that spans the late 1890s to the early 1940s. Grossheim’s collection includes photos of local scenes, landscapes and portraits of residents from that time period. The Musser Public Library has over 4,000 of the images digitally archived. As a service to the public, the reference staff provides access to high quality, photographic images in print for a reasonable fee. Pine Creek Grist Mill and Melpine Schoolhouse One of the focal points of Wildcat Den State Park is the Pine Creek Grist Mill, located in the eastern part of the park. The mill is thought to be the oldest working mill on its original site between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. It was built in 1848 by Benjamin Nye in response to the growing demand for pioneering families to have their crops ground into usable products like flour and meal. Near the mill is the classic one-room Melpine Schoolhouse, built in 1877, which is a museum of rural school memorabilia including old school books, photos, period desks, lunch buckets and more. Heritage Day and Buckskinner Rendezvous THIRD WEEKEND IN SEPTEMBER Take a step back in time and get in the pioneering spirit during this weekend event situated in the scenic Wildcat Den State Park just outside of Muscatine. Enjoy some fresh apple cider and homemade ice cream while listening to old-time mountain music and storytelling or strolling through the antique machinery displays. Take part in a variety of hands-on crafts and activities including taking a turn at sawing a log and catching a glimpse of what it was like “back in the day” before electricity. Learn more about the fur-trading era and watch a blacksmith at his craft by visiting the Buckskinners Rendezvous in the upper picnic area. Tour the Pine Creek Grist Mill, one of the few pre-Civil War mills still standing in the Midwest — and still operational. Public Camping Areas in Muscatine County: Muscatine County offers campers spectacular river views, clean comfortable facilities and plenty of recreational options. CLARK’S FERRY RECREATION AREA Clark’s Ferry is an 11-acre, Class A campground located along the banks of the Mississippi River just east of Muscatine. It is easily accessible from Highway 22. This facility offers 45 camp sites operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
SAULSBURY BRIDGE RECREATION AREA This Muscatine County Park is located 8 miles northwest of Muscatine, along the Cedar River, and is accessible from North Mulberry Avenue. Saulsbury Bridge Recreation Area offers three campgrounds with a combined total of 33 sites and a tent area. Saulsbury Bridge Recreation Area, which is managed by the Muscatine County Conservation Board, covers 675 acres. For more information call 563-264-5922 during business hours.

Beltway
The Beltway, also referred to as “the bypass,” is part of US Highway 61 — a major thoroughfare from Burlington and the Quad Cities to Muscatine. The Beltway District is one of the fastest growing areas of the city. It’s home to big box stores, a new movie complex as well as small businesses.
Historic Downtown
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this area of Muscatine is a must to explore. Unique specialty shops, antique shops, historic buildings, Pearl Plaza and the wonderful riverfront all make up the big community heart of Muscatine.
Mall District
The Muscatine Mall anchors this district that runs along and extends from Park Avenue, one of the city’s main routes. You’ll find many locally owned and operated businesses as well as some national chains.
Midtown District
The Midtown District is a bit more scattered than the other shopping areas in Muscatine. It includes all the businesses that are not part of the other districts. Take a little time and drive through Muscatine. You never know what you might find.
Southern District
Locals refer to the Southern District simply as “South End,” as it is the south end of town. Start on Grandview Avenue where you’ll find many locally owned businesses.
