Lierne National Park offers a diversity of animal and plant life in untouched surroundings – the perfect spot for eager hunters, fishermen and lovers of the outdoor life. The landscape also constitutes a fantastic exhibition of how the Ice Ages have left their mark on the area. The national park is characterized by low-lying, open mountainous areas, with the exception of the Hestkjølen mountain range, which reaches up to 1,300 metres above sea level. The varied landscape is the habitat of a number of different species of birds, particularly waders, ducks and divers. You may also observe dotterel, red-necked phalarope and long-tailed skua there. Moreover, due to its wilderness-like character, the area offers excellent conditions for species requiring sizeable territories such as wolverine, lynx and bears. There is also a wide range of cultural monuments there, bearing witness to the local Sámi heritage. With guides from Lierne National Park Center you can go “Bear tracking” and learn about the life of bears. Explore the bear’s natural habitat: the beautiful forests. The national park is also a safe bet for those who appreciate an abundance of mushrooms and berries. The area is well-suited to walking, but there are few marked trails or open cabins. However, the Lierne Fjellstyre mountain authority has cabins for rent both inside and outside the national park. The mountain authority also rents out boats on a number of the lakes. For more information visit www.nasjonalparken.no / www.fjellstyreneilierne.no / www.visitnamdalen.com
National Park Monument Stone, Lierne National Park In Lierne National Park there is a national park monument stone, erected to commemorate when HRH Crown Princess Mette-Marit opened the park. The hiking trail to the monument takes you into the park, along a signposted trail. From Grong, drive south on the E6 then turn towards Gäddede on Fv74. Turn right at Muru (brown sign for Lierne National Park) and drive towards Øvre Jakthytte where the gateway area to the national park is located. Toll road fee is payable by SMS and cash. At the starting point of the trail there is a campfire area and an informational sign. Follow the markings along the trail. The hiking trail is approx. 5 km one way.

Børgefjell National Park – rugged yet beautiful High peaks and gentle valleys. Wild rapids and extensive moors. Terrific scope for hunting and fishing. Welcome to Børgefjell National Park. In the eastern part of the national park you can experience extensive moors and rounded mountaintops, while the west offers high peaks and deep valleys with cirque glaciers and mountain lakes. For wild rapids and beautiful waterfalls, head to the southern part. You will also find Norway’s only viable stock of Arctic foxes and other animals such as wolverine, lynx and bears. The hunting is largely dominated by ptarmigan and small game. With its alpine terrain and at times changeable weather conditions, Børgefjell is best suited to impassioned outdoor recreation enthusiasts. It is no coincidence that seasoned mountain lovers travel to Børgefjell to find the ultimate peace of mind. Børgefjell is a good destination for those looking for the wilderness feeling, all year around.
Blåfjella-Sjækerfjella National Park – the realm of contrast Welcome to one of Norway’s biggest national parks. Welcome to fantastic hiking terrain with a unique flora and fantastic hunting. Welcome to the Blåfjella-Sjækerfjella mountains. The national park is known for its abundant stocks of ptarmigan and woodland game birds. Moose may also be hunted there. The local valleys and hillsides are the domain of red deer and roe deer, and with the help of your camera lens you may also find wolverine, lynx and bears within range. The area is also ideal for birdwatchers, providing the opportunity of observing wetland birds, birds of prey and owls. Large parts of the national park consist of low-lying mountains and otherwise benign terrain, and the wide range of marked trails there make Blåfjella-Sjækerfjella an excellent starting point for family outings. In contrast to this, we find Midtiklumpen, which towers up 1,333 metres above sea level. For those interested in long walks, it is good to know that there are a number of overnight accommodations in the park. The Ramblers’ Association place the self-service cabins Holden Fjellgård and Skjækerdalshytta at your disposal, and there are also a number of other possibilities for overnight stays. Hiking in Namdalen – Marked trails, available for everyone While hiking you experience nature in real time. Step by step you move along marked trails and gravel paths. You find your resting heart rate as you enjoy the view from the summit, or a cup of coffee at a rest area. Whether you hike alone or together with loved ones, the experience of the fresh air, the varied wildlife and the magnificent landscape is just as strong. Namdalen has many hiking trails, suitable for all ages and levels of outdoors experience. Throughout Namdalen, hiking associations, sporting clubs and other outdoor recreation enthusiasts take care of an extensive network of marked hiking routes. Such routes provide many visitors with their first encounter of Namdalen as a true hiking paradise. There are trails in every municipality in Namdalen, ranging from summit hikes, longer hikes in the national parks and walks along historical paths in lush forests, to hiking trails on the many islands on the Namdalen coast. There are many short walks around the city of Namsos. Klompen (114 masl) is the city-mountain of Namsos, only 20 minutes on foot from the city centre. Klompen Pavilion viewpoint is at the top of mountain, with the best view of the city. The trail is signposted from Scandic Rock City and the church. It is also possible to drive to the top in the summer season. On the geology island of Leka there are 50 signposted hiking and walking trails. Leka was named Norway’s Geological National Monument in 2010 because of the red serpentine mountains. The geology makes Leka one of Norway’s most unique islands! The round trip Herlaugsløype (11 km) gives you a nice view of the geology on the island and the Namdalen Coast. Hiking paradise in Inner Namdalen. There are many marked hiking trails and walks in the municipalities of Namsskogan, Røyrvik, Lierne, Høylandet and Grong. With 35 featured trails and routes there are plenty of options for the hiking enthusiast. The national parks in Namdalen also offer wonderful hiking opportunities for those who wish to walk in wilderness, far from any marked trail. Støypet and Ørnerovet, Leka Island The story about Ørnerovet, the eagle incident, put Leka on the map in 1932. Three year old Svanhild was taken by an eagle and flown away. Just like with fairy tales however, this story also ends well. The girl was found alive on a mountain ledge after 7 hours. The trail to Støypet and to Ørnerovposten starts in a large parking area in Kvaløya on Leka. Signposted parking with a picnic area and binoculars. The trail is marked and after a while it divides into two trails, one towards Støypet and one to Ørnerovposten. The rounds stones at Støypet have many different shapes and fascinating colours. The trail towards Ørnerovposten can entail some scrambling, but the view from the end of the trail is lovely. On Leka you walk among colourful rocks from the deepest part of the ancient seabed. There is both gold and platinum in the thin, black stripes in the yellow rock. For more hiking suggestions in Leka visit www.visitleka.no
Visit Leka Leka Kommune / +47 74 38 70 00 / www.visitleka.no Leka – Norways’s Geological National Monument. Leka island and municipality is the northernmost municipality in Trøndelag. Leka island was named Norway’s Geological National Monument in 2010. The unique geology shows a complete cross section of the earth, from the old seabed down to the mantle. The different types of rock in Leka originate from inside the earth, like the rock several kilometres below us. In Leka you can experience: • Unique geology • Spectacular nature • 50 signposted hiking trails • 18 signposted kayaking routes • Cycling around Leka (28 km) • Leka Stone Centre • Herlaugshaugen (burial mound from the Viking age) • Solsemhula (cave painting) • Ørnerovet • Skei Cultural Landscape

Cycling and Kayaking in Namdalen – an outdoors paradise Cycling and kayaking brings you close to white-sand beaches and the crystal-clear ocean, green cultural landscapes and exciting wildlife encounters. Namdalen is a paradise for outdoors activities with many possible routes, and large areas of nature where you can live your outdoor adventure. There are marked cycling routes all throughout the region. The «Cultural path in Harran” in Grong, a combined cycling- and hiking trip to Sisselfossen waterfall in Lierne, cultural memorial sites in Røyrvik and beautiful viewpoints are just some of what you can experience along the way. We also recommend the Landnámsvegen road between Rørvik and the fishing village of Abelvær (37 km). There are many great cycling routes both along the coast and inlands. Island hopping the Namdalen coast by bicycle. Along the Namdalen coast you will find several islands that are ideal for cycling. There is also good access to transport by ferry or express boat, so you can freely choose your destination and cycling distance. While cycling on the coast you can visit Namdalsmuseet, Norsk Sagbruksmuseum, Kystmuseet Rørvik and experience Norwegian author Olav Duuns childhood home on Jøa. We also recommend that you take the boat out to Sør-Gjæslingan fishing village, before finished the trip by cycling around Leka island. Kayaking on the Namdalen coast. You glide silently along the seabed. The silence is broken only by your own strokes and the open sea rumbling in the distance. You paddle at your own pace through crystal clear waters. A white-tailed eagle hovers over you and if you’re lucky you may just spot otters, seals and whales. The many beaches and sheltered coves are perfect for taking a breather ashore. Dramatic fjord landscapes, idyllic skerry or the mighty open sea? The choice is yours! In Namdalen you can take a kayaking class, go on tailored tours or try one of the many kayaking routes. You can also rent kayaks several places on the coast. Canoeing and kayaking in Grong. With several hundred lakes and many rivers of varying sizes, Grong is an Eldorado for those wishing to experience serenity between each stroke of the oar. Many choose Fiskløysa or Brusvatnet in Nesådalen for kayaking trips in scenic surroundings. Both lakes are accessible by car and have been adapted to facilitate lovely days in the outdoors. Join the Eagle Man, Ole Martin Dahle, among the isles and skerry of Flatanger. Follow the shipping lanes that people have used as their main travelling route for hundreds of years. Watch the sun rise above the mountains in the east and enjoy the sight of it as it sinks into the waters of Folla. Your guide will help you discover the joys of life by the sea. Close contact with the white-tailed eagle will take your breath away. Seagulls will follow along, scrounging food which, of course, they are given. The Eagle Man loves gulls. In search of bears in Lierne. Join a bear safari in Lierne, the realm of the bears. After an introduction about our largest predator, you are ready to explore the bear’s natural habitat: the beautiful forests. Climbing and Via ferrata Hanshelleren – a unique climbing paradise Flatanger is widely known for its sea eagle safaris and angling, but it’s now becoming world famous for another reason. Several of the world’s best climbers have become aware of Flatanger’s enormous natural climbing wall, the Hanshelleren cave. The massive overhang means the climbing surface always remains dry and free from moss. Several of the world’s best climbers have already travelled to Strøm in Flatanger to challenge themselves on one of the world’s toughest climbing routes – a so-called 9a route. But you don’t have to be a world-class climber to be attracted to Flatanger. There are now around 40 climbing routes of varying levels in the Hanshelleren cave, as well as more than 150 bouldering and climbing routes in the near vicinity. Moreover, there is a Via Ferrata – or “iron road” – where inexperienced climbers can try their hand at climbing. Using a cable and iron rungs, novices can climb 90 metres up a virtually virtual rock face. It’s hard to put the view from the top of islands, mountains and the open sea into words. You simply must experience it. For more information visit www.visitnamdalen.com

There are several wonderful areas for cross-country skiing and ski touring around Geitfjellet in Grong. The trails and routes are signposted, explaining distances and direction. Early in the season the most popular trail starts from Grong Ski Centre, up towards Heia. You can follow this trail onward to Kvernsjøen, into Snøådalen towards Snøhytta, or up the mountain to Geitfjelltoppen. The trail to Kvernsjøen is a great ski trip both in daytime and in the evening, with a headlight or in moonlight. Trails are groomed by machine and prepared both at the beginning of the season and all throughout. When the cross-country ski season is well underway the trails on Geitfjellet mountain are also groomed. All the trails in the area around Geitfjellet are signposted, so you can ski safely all winter long.
Koltjønnhytta Cabin, Overhalla

Koltjønnhytta is a cabin in Overhalla, popular among hikers and skiers all year around. This is an easy trip in beautiful terrain, well suited for families. From Namsos you drive east on Fv17, turning left towards Skage on Fv437. Turn right at Reinbjør and drive to the parking area at the end of the road. From the parking area in Reinbjør there are 3 km of cross-country ski trails in wintertime, though the trail to the cabin is shorter. For those who want a longer trip up the mountain it is possible to ski from Koltjønnhytta towards Liasetran and Liakammen mountain. This trip is approximately 8 km. You will find all of this in Namdalen. Just one more cast … Namdalen is named after one of the country’s most excellent salmon rivers, the Namsen. Deep-sea and freshwater fishing have formed the basis of human settlement and trade in Namdalen for thousands of years. Today, Namdalen is the preferred destination for sport fishermen at all levels. All of them with one thing in common: Expectations.

Salmon fishing in Namsen – the Queen of Rivers The Namsen, Queen of Rivers, emerges from Store Namsvatnet lake in the municipality of Røyrvik, before meandering 229 kilometres through majestic and magnificent countryside to its estuary in Namsos. Among enthusiasts at home and abroad, the Namsen is one of the country’s most coveted salmon rivers. Fishing from boats and from the banks of the river are long-standing traditions, and landowners along the river offer a wide range of facilities for both passionate anglers and those anticipating their first cast. Along the river you will find an increasing number of places offering you a “complete package” including high standard overnight accommodations, mouth-watering culinary experiences, access to exclusive salmon spots, organized activities, and nature and culture experiences. Namsen Salmon & Train Experience is one such place. In Overhalla you can sleep in one of NSB’s discarded sleeping carriages from the 1960s, above one of Norway’s best salmon fishing rivers. You will wake up in the middle of the old rail bridge and can enjoy the view of the river from morning to evening. There is a large terrace with tables and benches outside the sleeping carriage, and the kitchen serves various salmon-based dishes and refreshments. You can sit outside and enjoy the view of the river as salmon feed in the surface and get a panoramic view as someone catches a big salmon. You can also try salmon fishing from the riverbank, or by boat. The salmon fishing season in the Bjøra starts on May 15th, while the season in the rest of the Namsen starts on June 1st. Should you wish to feel the excitement of the Namsen, you can purchase reasonably priced fishing permits online. Find accommodation and providers of salmon fishing in this brochure and on www.visitnamdalen.com.

Mountain fishing in Børgefjell National Park – the Realm of the Mountain Trout Børgefjell is the realm of the mountain trout. You can wander from one of the many excellent mountain fishing lakes to another in search of the trout fisherman’s dream catch. Simskardvatnet and Orvatnet are among the national park’s best fishing lakes, while the sources of the rivers Namsen and Vefsn also originate within the national park. The Børgefjellkortet permit entitles you to fish throughout the national park and in the Austre Tiplingen landscape protection area. With only a few exceptions, it’s not possible to stay overnight in the national park in cabins. However, it’s possible to camp overnight in a tent.
Lierne National Park – fantastic mountain fishing The low-lying mountain areas of Lierne National Park are renowned for their excellent fishing. Innumerable first-rate fishing lakes and miles of river await you here. In most of the mountain lakes there are trout and in some of them also charr. Many of the fishing lakes are easily accessible, and you can be sure to avoid the crowds here. In Lierne, there are, in fact, more lakes than people... The Nordli permit (Nordlikortet) covers parts of the national park and provides access to attractive fishing in lakes, tarns and rivers. At several spots in the national park cabins are available for rent from the mountain authority (Lierne Fjellstyre). The mountain authority also rents out boats on several of the lakes.
The Blåfjella-Sjækerfjella Mountains – mountain fishing in spectacular surroundings The Blåfjella-Sjækerfjella National Park is one of the biggest national parks in the country, consisting of a comprehensive landscape including everything from exciting primeval forests to high, untamed mountains. In this vast Eldorado, you can easily wander undisturbed for days on end. Find one of the many mountain lakes, and you will soon find trout and charr that are eager to bite. Trout Fishing in Grong – one permit, many possibilities The Grongkortet permit allows you access to freshwater fishing in practically the whole of the borough of Grong. Within the municipal borders you will find over 500 fishing lakes and a number of rivers of varying sizes. The commonest species are trout and charr. The Grongkortet permit includes all private landowners associations, the municipal woods, and the Nordre Bangsjøen and Brennmoen areas of state-owned common land. In addition to fishing with rods, otter boards and nets are also allowed in some of the lakes. The permit does not apply to the salmon inhabited parts of the Namsen, Sanddøla and Nesåa (see “Salmon Fishing in Namsen”). The borough of Grong offers unusually varied natural surroundings, including wild mountains, extensive mountain plains and luxuriant river valleys. With just one permit, you have access to the whole lot.
Salmon Fishing in the River Sanddøla – the Princess of the Namsen Watercourse In Grong town centre, two of the country’s finest salmon rivers converge. The Namsen is the best known of the two, but more and more people are becoming aware of the tributary called Sanddøla. The salmon-populated part of the Sanddøla is particularly popular for fishing from the banks. In the lower parts of the river you will also find two mighty waterfalls – the Formofossen and the Tømmeråsfossen, offering exciting and challenging fishing spots. The Sanddøla offers fishing in peace and quiet. Spend some time exploring the river and you will soon discover exciting rapids, pools and deep channels that are not so easy to notice at first glance. This is where the fish bite …
Salmon Fishing in the Bjøra – idyllic surroundings The Bjøra is a classic salmon fishing river that meanders slowly past large farms and delightful cultural landscapes before merging with the Namsen. This river is the home of the biggest salmon in the Namsen watercourse, and is regarded by enthusiasts as one of Norway’s very rivers for salmon fishing. You can fish from the river bank or from a boat. Many of the anglers who travel to the Bjøra every year prefer single or two-handed fly rods, but it is also possible to fish with lures or worms. The salmon fishing season in the Bjøra starts on 15 May. The Bjøra is also known for its excellent sea trout fishing. For more information visit www.visitnamdalen.com

With no less than six species of fish “on the menu”, Kvesjøen Lake in Lierne is a well-preserved secret among impassioned anglers in Scandinavia. Here, you can fish lake charr, charr, trout, grayling, burbot and pike. Those who make the trip to Kvesjøen every year can expect some magnificent specimens among their catch, together with the possibility of record-breaking fish turning up on their hooks. And not to mention a good fisherman’s tale, of course – you should have seen the one that got away …
Salmon Fishing in the Høylandsvassdraget Watercourse – varied fishing The Høylandsvassdraget watercourse includes the rivers Søråa, Eida, Flakken and Flåttelva. The Søråa is the longest of the rivers in the Høylandsvassdraget watercourse, with a salmon populated stretch of about 20 kilometres. Large parts of the river run slowly through the local, well-groomed cultural landscape. For the most part the fishing takes place from the banks. The Søråa is a great river for fly fishing, especially for one-handed fly rods. The average salmon in the Søråa weighs between four and five kilos. The Eida includes a salmon populated stretch of about 1 kilometre. This is a very swift river where most people fish with lures or flies from the banks. You can expect salmon weighing between four and five kilos here, too.
Trout Fishing in Namsskogan – a wealth of opportunity Uppermost in Namdalen, the outdoor Eldorado of Namsskogan awaits you. With over 800 lakes and tarns and 35 rivers, the area is a Mecca for impassioned anglers, and an ideal starting point for beginners and families with young children. The Namsskogankortet permit gives you access to the whole lot. The source of the Namsen, the Queen of Rivers, is found in the borough. In this part of the river there is an excellent stock of trout, and the unique local species of salmon, namsblanken, can also be found there. Most of this varied area is managed by the Namsskogan Fjellstyre mountain authority, which is among those mountain authorities in Norway that put the most effort into renting out cabins. You will find no less than 17 of their inviting cabins round about in the mountains, in addition to a number of rowing boats. Deep sea fishing is, and has always been, the bedrock of settlement and business development on the Namdalen coast. The Skrei (migrating Atlantic cod) spawns on the coastline every winter, and the rest of the year there is active fishing of both cod, pollock and halibut. Every year in March the Skrei Festival celebrates Skrei fishing. The coast of Namdalen stretches from Flatanger in the south, via Namsos and Rørvik, to Leka in the north. Explore the archipelago. There are close to 6000 islands and islets in Vikna municipality alone. The archipelago is home to powerful nature experiences with white-sand beaches, narrow sounds and open ocean. Among the many islands you can you can hike, walk along cultural paths, along cultural paths, kayak, dive, island jump with bicycle and much more. The coast is an Eldorado for bird-watchers and has many amazing fishing opportunities. Every year recreational fishermen from near and far visit Namdalen to try their luck while fishing. The protected fishing village Sør-Gjæslingan, which in its heyday was the largest fishing village south of Lofoten, is on the Namdalen coast. Here you can stay overnight in authentic Rorbu i.e. fishermen’s cottages. The Namdalen coast is a favourite stretch to travel along among the boating enthusiasts. Coastline adventures are plentiful, all year around. Go on a guided deep-sea fishing trip, rent a boat for the day, or try fishing from a rowboat or a kayak. There are many businesses with boats for rent (with or without outboard motor), fishing equipment and knowledgeable guides in the municipalities of Namsos, Flatanger, Fosen, Nærøy, Vikna and Leka. There is a lot of fish, and large fish, outside the Namdalen coast. Maybe going fishing with a local fisherman sounds tempting? Nothing beats spending the day fishing, then ending the day with dinner made from the catch of the day. The locals always know where the big fish bite. Set sail! The aquaculture industry is also a large part of coastal culture in Namdalen. You can learn about aquaculture, one of Norway’s largest industries, with SalmoNor in Rørvik or with Bjørøya in Flatanger. SalmoNor collaborates with Kystmuseet Rørvik, the coastal museum, to tell the story of Norwegian aquaculture and the modern aquaculture industry. They give tours of the museum and boat trips out to a fish farm facility. Bjørøya takes you on a journey into the aquaculture industry through movies in the visitor centre and RIB-tours out to a salmon farm facility. For more information visit www.visitnamdalen.com

Sør-Gjæslingan is situated far out to sea near the infamous waters of Folla. In former times it was the biggest and most important fishing station south of Lofoten. Today, the island settlement is a listed holiday paradise where you can find peace and quiet in authentic surroundings. You can do as the fishermen do, and stay in charming fishermen’s cabins. Outside, you can enjoy the character and charm of the old fishing hamlet. In addition to the fisherman’s cabins the fish racks, fish landing station, manor house, shop, fisherman’s hostel, saltery and cod-liver oil refinery have all been preserved for posterity, allowing you to explore life as it was when the Vikna fishery was the main source of income among the people on the coast of Namdalen. Sør-Gjæslingan is accessible by express passenger boat from Namsos and Rørvikseveral days a week from the end of May to the end of August. You can also visit Sør-Gjæslingan with MS Sunniva Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays as a part of the SalmoNor trip between June 25th and August 9th.
Nordøyan – where the land ends and the sea begins Westernmost out at sea we find the islands of Nordøyan, three islands that have been an outpost and a haven for fishermen since time immemorial. The people out there have always made a living from the natural resources that surround the islands. In harmony with nature, they have been able to provide for themselves and their families thanks to the blessings of the sea. In this historic fishing village you can spend the night in authentic fishermen’s cabins (rorbu). On the Nordøyan islands, the sea and the abundant fishing grounds of the Namdal coast are just beyond the quayside. In addition to deep-sea fishing, deepsea rafting, guided tours and a number of other activities are also available. Nor do you need to bring your own boat in order to get to Nordøyan. In July and August you can catch the express passenger ferry “Foldafjord” from Namsos. On your safe arrival, a guide, a shop, some home-made fishcakes, and coffee and waffles will await you. And from the old post office, you can send postcards to friends and family stamped with the exclusive Nordøyan postmark. Nordøyan and the islands and their surrounding waters are hard to describe, they have to be experienced. You will not leave this natural gem unmoved. History and Culture in Namdalen Namdalen has a long history rooted in coastal culture, agriculture, timber industry and Southern Sami reindeer husbandry. Culture, tradition and community are important for both locals and for visitors. Among the thousands of islands and islets on the Namdalen coast deep-sea fishing is a vital part of life. The fishing industry is an important industry for the region. Sør-Gjæslingan is an authentic fishing village, which in its heyday was the largest fishing village south of Lofoten. Here you can enjoy peace and quiet, stay overnight in a charming rorbu and learn about life at the coast. At Kystmuseet Rørvik you can learn more about the Namdalen coast. Skei and Skeisnesset Utvalgte Kulturlandskap (Featured Cultural Landscape) is on Leka island. As one of 22 specially selected cultural landscapes within Norwegian agriculture, Skei achieved special status. This because of the biological, cultural and historical values of the area. The landscape is beautiful with both coastal heathlands (an endangered nature type in Norway) and agricultural pastures. There are also several cultural heritage sites in the area, among them Herlaugshaugen. Herlaughshaugen is the third largest burial mound from the Viking age in Norway. Leka is also Norway’s Geological National Monument. The regional city of Namsos was founded on logging and timber industry, an industry you will still find in the city centre. Timber was felled as far inlands as Namsskogan and brought south-west on Namsen river to the industrial area in Namsos. All of Namdalen was a part of the logging industry because of the Namsen river. The Norwegian Sawmill Museum in Spillum showcases the traditional industry, and you will also find Norway’s last steamsaw in the museum. Namsos is the home and birthplace of the Trønderock music genre. How did a sawmilling town in Namdalen become the home of rock music? The answer you will find in the Rock City experience centre in Namsos. Known Norwegian musicians like DDE, Terje Tysland, Åge Aleksandersen and Prudence all had their start in Namsos. At the Nord-Trøndelag Museum of Art (Kunstmuseet) you can view art exhibitions from both near and far. Namdalsmuseet tells the story of rural and farming culture in the region, with 24 buildings and over 13 000 items and photographs in their collection. There are many concerts, festivals, traditional markets and other events in Namdalen, all year around. See events and festivals on page 77.

The Norwegian Sawmill Museum – a journey back in time Spillum Dampsag & Høvleri (steamsaw & planning mill), just south of Namsos, is the country’s only major listed steamsaw mill, and one of fourteen technical-industrial cultural monuments of national importance in Norway. The Norwegian Sawmill Museum (Norsk Sagbruksmuseum) has preserved Spillum Dampsag & Høvleri as a time bubble where visitors travel back in time to the late 1800s. From time to time the old saw and planning mill are put into operation, thus helping create an authentic atmosphere. When visiting the sawmill museum you can choose between taking a tour on your own, or joining a guided tour of the production premises.
Namdal Museum – a fascinating presentation Want to learn more about Namdal’s eventful cultural history? The Namdal Museum is situated just outside of Namsos town centre, and consists of 24 buildings and over 13,000 exhibits and photographs. As a museum of cultural history, Namdal Museum presents a range of exhibits divided among a number of different themes. The main emphasis of the collection is on the old farming culture, the history of the forests and outlying districts and the history of the hospital. At Namdal Museum you can take part in a range of exciting and educational activities, like the culture market (kulturmartna), the Christmas market and several theatre performances.
Kystmuseet Rørvik– a beacon of coastal culture The distinctive design of Kystmuseet Rørvik (the coastal culture centre) sends out a signal that the coastal town of Rørvik has zestful coastal culture as its foremost trademark. Here, you can learn about the main trends of our history and about how proximity to the sea and its resources has formed Norway as a nation – since the first inhabitants followed the receding edge of the glacier northwards, up until todays opportunities and challenges as one of the world’s leading seafood nations. At Norveg you can, for instance, learn more about modern aquaculture by following the journey from sea cage to the table. Don’t miss the old trading post at Berggården, or the other historical buildings in Rørvik town centre that contribute towards the indisputable charm of this small coastal town.

At the mouth of the majestic Namsen river, you will discover Namsos - the pleasant little town with a big heart. Few towns have played such important roles in Norwegian music: It is now 40 years since Åge Aleksandersen and Terje Tysland revolutionized the Norwegian music scene with their distinctive Trønderlag rock. To this day Namsos is a vibrant rock town and home to some of Norway’s most beloved artists. The past and present are both brought to life at Rock City – an experience centre dedicated to Norwegian pop and rock. Right next door is Scandic Rock City. You can enjoy a good night’s sleep in a guitar-shaped bed! At the hotel’s restaurant, you can dine on dishes inspired by local cuisine while admiring beautiful views of the Namsensfjord. Explore Namsos with good friends. Visit the shops and taste the locally-produced and delicious food from both sea and land. Discover Oasen, a water park inside a mountain, and then be inspired in the town’s galleries and museums. Find peace strolling along streets and in the surrounding nature. With a river, fjord and a network of marked trails, memorable nature-based experiences are never more than a stone’s throw away.

Local Food – a taste of culinary tradition Namdalen has a lot of local flavours, produce and culinary treasures for you to discover. Trøndelag is the Nr.1 food region in Norway and there are many of food traditions in Namdalen that you can try. Here you can taste Atlantic cod and pollock from the Namdal coast, salmon from the amazing salmon rivers, and mushrooms and berries from the forests. Grain from local fields means that in Namdalen you can find both flour, bread, and beer from local breweries, made with local ingredients only. There are also many opportunities for hunting in the region, and it is not uncommon that you will find meat from moose or small game in local grocery stores or restaurants. Skjenkestova in Skorovatn is one of Norway’s more distinctive pubs and an “Ale Dorado”. Here, in scenic surroundings in the middle of the mountains, you will find over 500 brands of beer from all over the world. Skjenkestova also has one of the country’s best assortments of aquavit and malt whisky, and it is by no means a coincidence that people from all over the country travel to the Skjenkestova to learn more about the culture of food and drink. Gammel Erik cheese factory started as a trial project in Carlos Helguera’s kitchen in 2000 with 12 cheese moulds and a homemade cheese press. It proved so successful that Carlos opened a cheese factory in the former community centre in Namsskogan. Elvekanten Ysteri is situated by the E6 highway in the centre of Namsskogan. It’s hard to miss the large yellow building decorated with cheese holes. Buøy Gård is surrounded by a scenic coastal landscape with a long and interesting history as a trading post on the coast of Namdalen. By combining a historical treasure with an exceptional passion for local food, stately Buøy Gård (Buøy Farm) offers a culinary experience that has gained national reputation. Buøy Gård has received numerous awards and has been ranked as one of Norway’s best restaurants by the renowned White Guide. LiVerten is a restaurant with its own bakery, restaurant and a local food outlet. At the LiVerten service station you can buy fast-food with a local twist. Dishes include Li-bab (kebab-style dish with reindeer meat and mashed potatoes), moose burgers, wilderness grill sausages and more. In the local food outlet you can buy local meat products, chocolate, beer, cheese and more. The restaurant serves traditional food made with local ingredients. Namsosmartnan Market – public festivities in the City of Rock Namsosmartnan combines trade, fun and powerful cultural events with a view to creating public festivities in the regional capital. In addition to the extensive market, you can enjoy theatre performances, visit exhibitions and go to concerts with some of our most famous and popular musicians. The fun fair is also a safe bet for all the families visiting Namsos during the market. Popular Norwegian artists will guarantee a festive atmosphere in the evenings. Here in the cradle of the Trønder Rock genre you will, of course, also experience a number of local performers who contribute towards making the Namsos of today a prominent city of culture.
The Skrei Festival – a tribute to coastal culture Late every winter something magical occurs in the sea off the shores of Namdalen. Millions of skrei – a variety of Norwegian cod sustainably fished while in its prime– congregate on the spawning grounds intent on ensuring the survival of the species. At the same time the communities on the Vikna islands become a hive of activity, since cod has formed the basis for all trade and settlement here since time immemorial. The Skrei Festival is a tribute to coastal culture, while at the same time presenting the biggest cod fishery south of Lofoten. During the Skrei Festival you can join a trip to idyllic Vandsøya and sample the atmosphere at a fish landing station far out at sea. In Rørvik you can stroll around the pleasant market street and perhaps find a bargain among all the providers of traditional handicrafts. You can also buy locally caught cod, liver and roes here at very reasonable prices. The Skrei Festival also offers a number of cultural events, and, of course, skrei served in both traditional and more innovative ways.
Norsk Revyfestival – Norwegian Revue Championship 2019 Norsk Revyfestival (Norwegian Revue Festival) is a fun-filled festival in Norway, and a national stage for Norwegian revue from all over the country. In July 2019 the Norwegian Revue Championship 2019 is held at Høylandet, a village with under a thousand inhabitants. It’s pure craziness to invite to a humour festival on a field in Namdalen, but the 2000 audience members always have a blast. There is humour, theatre, music and Norwegian revue at the festival.

CAR FERRIES IN NAMDALEN A number of car ferries and express boats makes the spectacular coast of Namdalen easily accessible to travelers. A ferry crossing is also an experience in itself, and a pleasant break from the drive. BEFORE DEPARTURE • Take your time. This avoids stress and contributes to safety on the road. • Show up in good time before departure. There are normally few queues, but you may have to wait for the next ferry during high season. It is not possible to pre-book ferry tickets. • You can pay for your ferry ticket by card or cash. Some ferries offer a selection of drinks, light meals and snacks. • Don’t forget your camera! UPDATED FERRY AND EXPRESS BOAT ROUTES This travel guide was printed in December 2015. Some of the routes and fares may have changed later. Departure times and fares may be subject to typological errors. We recommend that you check the updated ferry routes online before your journey. Use the QR codes to get the routes directly to your phone or tablet, or visit the web sites of the ferry operators:
