Gardens

Walled gardens, arboretums, exotic plants and aromatic lawns; Northumberland will excite the senses of all garden lovers and horticulturists. ‘2016 Year of the English Garden’ marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of landscape architect Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Born at Kirkharle in Northumberland, Lancelot Brown attended Cambo village school before learning his trade on the Kirkharle estate until 1739. You can see an exhibition about his life at Kirkharle Courtyard, and experience his seamless landscapes at various sites in Northumberland. Less than three miles from Kirkharle is Wallington, home to generations of the unconventional Trevelyan family who loved being outdoors and close to nature. The house is surrounded by an informal landscape of lawns, lakes, parkland and woodland waiting to be explored. It is believed that Capability Brown was involved in the early recreation of the East and West Woods. Nearby Rothley Lake, an impressive lake divided by the road towards Rothbury, was originally designed as a fishing lake by Brown and remains a tranquil spot, surrounded by wildlife and home to a family of swans. The landscaping work of Capability Brown was often very dramatic, an example of which can still be seen to the north of Alnwick Castle.

4

Land was flattened, trees planted, the river re-routed and hills created along the roadside to hide the castle until it bursts into view at its most impressive angle – a view that can still be appreciated today. While exploring over 400 miles of amazing scenery in the Northumberland National Park, stay in luxury at the magnificent Hesleyside Hall where you can gaze out of the window at grounds landscaped by Brown. Northumberland boasts an impressive collection of gardens, each with their own unique characteristics and charms. The gardens at Seaton Delaval Hall, created by John Vanbrugh are now the most complete Vanbrugh landscape in existence, pre-dating Capability Brown. Paths cut in trees and woodlands were used to highlight features of the wider landscape, such as the 18 metre high stone obelisk at the south side of the hall. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and strongly influenced by Gertrude Jekyll, Whalton Manor Gardens is truly a hidden gem, lovingly restored by owner Penny Norton. Open exclusively by appointment for individuals and

pre booked groups, you can enjoy the magnificent walled garden, listed summerhouses, pergolas and rose garden in private. The Gertrude Jekyll Garden at Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island occupies the site of a vegetable patch that once provided the soldiers in the castle with food. This small yet distinctive National Trust garden has something to offer all year round from hardy annuals to colourful perennials. The William Turner Garden is an oasis of tranquility in Carlisle Park in the heart of Morpeth. This modern garden features elements of a 16th Century Tudor Garden including Physic Beds, a Knot Garden and Viewing Mound. Entry to the garden is free. For a healing experience relax on the fragrant chamomile lawn, discover the secret powers of plants and follow the aroma trail at Dilston Physic Garden. Lemurs, wallabies, meerkats and snakes are just some of the 130 species of animals to be found at Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens. That’s not all, there is also the Victorian Walled garden, sunken and woodland gardens and the National Fagus (Beach Tree) Collection, making it a great day out for all the family.

We visited Northumberland’s largest gardens and chatted to the gardeners about what you can expect to see when visiting.

Cragside Cragside has something for everyone. The rock garden is dramatic, the pinetum is tranquil, the rhododendrons in bloom are a spectacle but late summer in the formal garden has to be our special time of year when the garden is at its Victorian best. Our bright and bold bedding schemes catch your eye and the vibrant dahlias always put on a show. The intricate planting and designs of the carpet beds are always impressive. But my personal favourite has to be our colourful 66 metre herbaceous border. Holly Darby, trainee gardener at Cragside

Howick Hall Gardens From snowdrops in February to autumn colour in November Howick Hall Gardens are spectacular throughout the year. Daffodils abound throughout the garden in spring and in the Silverwood you’ll marvel at the colourful show of rhododendrons, primulas and meconopsis. In summer the front borders are full of colour with many herbaceous perennials along with roses, catmint, lavender and agapanthus and the Bog garden has a wonderful array of plants grown from seed collected in the wild. The arboretum contains many unusual trees and shrubs from around the world. Robert Jamieson, Head Gardener, Howick Hall Gardens and Arboretum Holly Darby (Cragside)

Wallington Hall & Gardens

The Alnwick Garden

I’ve been working at Wallington for over 15 years now. The hidden walled garden, set in the depths of Eastwood, is the reason I love coming to work every day. The four acre garden nestles beautifully in what was a hawthorn dell. Within the walls, the ornamental garden is set on many levels, creating drama and surprise round every corner. The twentieth century planting design is ever changing and thrives in this sheltered valley, keeping me addicted to this magical space in every season.

The Garden, though modern and contemporary with Europe’s largest Treehouse and a Poison Garden, has taken garden features from the past and adapted them to create a sculptural, vibrant garden, including one of the UK’s largest rose gardens and the world’s largest Japanese cherry orchard. The very curvaceous hornbeam arbour mirrors the curves of the Grand Cascade and hides people as they ascend to the stunning Ornamental Garden, where pleached crab apples are suspended on floating hedges.

Assistant head gardener, Simon Thompson

Head Gardener, Trevor Jones

Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens The gardens really do offer something all year round; spectacular snowdrop displays come to life in early spring, 6000 tulips bloom in April/May alongside magnolia and lilies, then in June and July the Rhododendrons reach a spectacular peak. The highlight of Belsay has to be the Quarry Garden which always surprises and delights our visitors, plant-life grows from the cliffs and ravines and the sights and smells in this part of the garden are unique. I love these gardens, they are a real labour of love for me as I was trained by my father who was the previous head gardener for 18 years. Head gardener, Jo Harrigan leads the six strong gardening team, supported by a team of dedicated volunteers. Bog Garden in July (Howick Hall Gardens)

Star Studded

Night Out

What is a Dark Sky Park? A Dark Sky Park is a designated area of exceptional night time beauty where light pollution is minimised and controlled in order to preserve the dark skies. The Northumberland International Dark Sky Park has Gold Tier status and is the largest Dark Sky Park in Europe. It covers 572 square miles of the Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water & Forest Park, giving visitors oodles of opportunities to see up to 2,000 stars at any one time, the Milky Way and the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). There is something to see at any time of year, but the best time to take advantage of the Dark Sky Park is in Autumn and Winter when the nights are at their longest.

Where can I go to stargaze? Technically, anywhere in the Dark Sky Park! Wrap up warm, take a flask and a pair of binoculars and enjoy a star studded show! 20 Dark Sky Discovery Sites are dotted throughout Northumberland, some as simple as a quiet car park with an information board to help you explore the night sky, such as Cawfields and Walltown carparks on Hadrian’s Wall. Others host events throughout the year, including Kirknewton Village Hall, near Wooler and Allendale Golf Club in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If you prefer to be inside, visit the observatory at Battlesteads Hotel in the picturesque village of Wark where you can enjoy talks, activities and drop in sessions.

For more information go to: visitnorthumberland.com/darkskies

I’m a complete beginner, where do I start? Whether you are a beginner or an experienced stargazer, Kielder Observatory is a truly amazing and unique place to discover the stars, offering visitors a hands-on experience that is unrivalled in the UK. They run hundreds of events throughout the year from Family Astronomy to Late Night Deep Sky Observing, but be sure to book early to avoid disappointment. There are accommodation providers throughout Northumberland who hold Dark Sky awards. ‘Dark Sky Friendly’ businesses have check lists of what to bring to enjoy the night sky, provide resources such as star charts and have information on local dark sky events. Businesses with the ‘Stay & Gaze’ award also provide a designated viewing area on-site with equipment that you can use to view the stars. Look out for the awards on visitnorthumberland.com and in the accommodation section of this brochure. Ask your accommodation provider about our ‘starmakers’ who are trained to hold events and can be booked for a private stargazing session.

Wander along its woodland paths, explore the William Turner Garden- a tribute to the famous son of Morpeth or revel in river boating, tennis or bowls.

BERWICK-UPON-TWEED

Lying 3 miles south of the Scottish Border, Berwick-UponTweed sits at the tip of Northumberland. Steeped in historical significance, this coastal town was captured 13 times by invading Scots before eventually falling into English hands. Great Elizabethan walls surround the town, close to the iconic Royal Border Bridge which dominates the River Tweed. A beloved holiday destination of L.S. Lowry, visitors are able to walk the Lowry Trail depicting the scenes of his most famous work set within the town. Immerse yourself in Northumbrian history at the Berwick Barracks, be inspired by contemporary visual art at the Gymnasium Gallery or drink heartily at Berwick’s Food and Beer Festival in September.

Once an important port for shipping grain, Newbiggin has rejuvenated itself as a destination for contemporary art. Graced with the UK’s first permanent offshore sculpture, ‘Couple’ the 5m tall bronze monument dominates the horizon and forms part of the Newbiggin Art Trail. Attractive golden sands lay close to the Newbiggin Maritime Centre which depicts the communities’ history, heroism and hardship. Newbiggin Couple Sculpture (Jason Thompson)

Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in the country; home to the Duke of Northumberland's family, the Percys, for over 700 years. The castle’s rich history is brimming with drama, intrigue, and extraordinary people; from a gunpowder plotter and visionary collectors, to decadent hosts and medieval England’s most celebrated knight: Harry Hotspur. Combining magnificent medieval architecture with sumptuous Italianate State Rooms, Alnwick Castle has been used as a film location for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts and, more recently, Downton Abbey.

North Sea

Tall Ships Regatta

2016

The bustling port town of Blyth in South East Northumberland will host the prestigious North Sea Tall Ships Regatta in 2016. The four day event from Friday 26th to Monday 29th August will be a fantastic maritime celebration including live music, street theatre, Crew Parade and a spectacular Parade of Sail. It is a fitting tribute to Blyth’s rich sailing history that the town will be welcoming the Regatta in August. Tall ships up to 100 metres long, some decades old, will sail into the tidal, deep water port of Blyth. Visitors can expect a great view of the ships from the quayside as well as being able to go on board the ships. From vantage points along the bay between Blyth and Seaton Sluice, the dramatic sites of the ships at full mast, sails billowing, will be truly breathtaking. The North Sea Tall Ships Regatta is being held for only the second time in six years and 2016 marks the diamond anniversary of The Tall Ships Races. The ships will then depart on the 500 mile nautical race from Blyth to Gothenburg in Sweden.

The ghosts of the Border Reivers still haunt Windy Gyle and Bloodybush Edge, the endless white sand beaches where the Danes landed in their long boats, it's all there in the plaintive song of the Curlew up on the windy moors, still wild!’ Sting

Get

Closer

to Nature

Nestled within Northumberland’s dramatic coastline, unspoilt woodland and sprawling countryside is a variety of rare wildlife, thriving in the safe haven of our protected landscapes. Scattered a few miles off the coast at Seahouses, the Farne Islands, under the care of the National Trust, are home to 23 varieties of birds including razorbills, guillemots and most famously, the colourful puffins. Declared by broadcaster Sir David Attenborough as his ‘favourite place to see nature at its best,’ this birder’s paradise is bustling with spectacular colonies which flock to breed between April and July. The RSPB bird sanctuary Coquet Island lies a mile from the coast at Amble and its puffin colony is celebrated each year at the Amble Puffin Festival. Britain’s rarest nesting seabird, the roseate tern, also perches upon the Isle which is home to 90% of the total UK population.

One of the most unspoilt, remote landscapes of tumbling waterfalls and vast moors is situated in the South of Northumberland. The North Pennines is a scene of stark wilderness and is classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Due to the protective measures, wildlife thrives in the uninterrupted habitats of peat lands and ancient hay meadows. The most prominent species, often spotted by visitors, is the Black Grouse with the North Pennines accounting for 80% of the UK population.

After successfully raising its young at Kielder, the rare osprey is beginning its recolonization of the region.

See seals basking on the rocks with the 1,500 seal pups that are born each Autumn.

To best enjoy the delights of the Farne Islands and Coquet Island, catch a boat from Seahouses or Amble harbour (respectively) where operators such as Serenity Farne Island Boat Trips offer guided tours of these coastal wildlife hot-spots.

Around half of the UK’s Red Squirrel population inhabit Kielder Water & Forest Park, so observing one in its natural territory is commonplace on a wander around the Park, or you can watch the live squirrel feed on a screen in the Kielder Castle café. Other animals frequently spotted within Kielder and the Northumberland National Park include otters, roe deer, badgers and bats.

The Coast

The

Coast A staggering 39 miles of Northumberland’s coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with spectacular sandy beaches, undulating dunes, and rocky cliffs, plus two national nature reserves. Standing guard along the coast are the iconic castles of Warkworth, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Lindisfarne, with Berwick’s ramparts and Elizabethan town walls serving as a reminder of its turbulent border history. Holy Island, birthplace of the Lindisfarne Gospels, is cut off twice daily from the rest of the world by fast moving tides, so be sure to check the tide times before travelling. Sitting off the coast, the Farne Islands are a haven for seabirds including a large colony of puffins, to see them catch a boat tour from Seahouses harbour.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary, a new official guidebook has been published, containing up-todate information and route changes. A new Passport is also available for walkers to collect stamps at places they visit along the way and a dedicated website has been launched for the tenth year. If you have walked the Northumberland Coast Path since it opened or you are planning to walk it in 2016, we would love to see your photos and hear about your experience. www.northumberlandcoastpath.org

Newton

SLALEY HALL HOTEL

The Duke of Wellington Inn is located in the village of Newton close to Corbridge, Hadrian’s Wall and Hexham. The inn has recently reopened following an extensive refurbishment. The décor reflects the traditional country inn history but with a modern twist. Existing oak and stone has been enhanced with modern colours, furniture and fabrics. Lunches and dinners are served seven days a week in the bar and dining room. The food provides traditional British comfort eating to an exceptional standard and makes use of local, seasonal ingredients. A comprehensive range of beers and ales compliments an extensive wine list. The inn experience continues with seven bedrooms providing a very high quality of accommodation.

1000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest play home to this magnificent, elegant Edwardian mansion house. Sympathetically extended, the interiors are almost as dramatic as the exterior. This is very old world grandeur with a modern twist. Enjoy the warmth of welcome as you arrive and immerse yourself in the luxury that the hotel has to offer. Choose to dine in one of restaurants; Hadrians Brasserie - offering understated cuisine locally sourced, Dukes Grill - specialising in steak and seafood or the Claret Jug - with a relaxed atmosphere and informal dining. Take time to spoil yourself in the recently enhanced spa offering a delicious array of ESPA treatments or simply unwind in the steam room, sauna or take a swim in the indoor pool. If outdoor is more your thing, it doesn’t get much better than this. Choose a bracing country walk around the estate or choose to play one of the 2 PGA Championship 18 hole golf courses - take on the challenge of The Hunting Course often described as the ‘Augusta of the North’. If excitement and adventure are what you crave - we have these too. Based on site are Allout Adventures who offer 4x4 off road driving, quad biking and much more. After all of this excitement retire to the 19th bar for a well earned drink. Surely you deserve this?

Allen Valleys Where industrial heritage meets nature

Exploring locally

Powder houses, mineshops, turf stores, adits, shafts, smelting sites and washing floors adorn the landscape of the Allen Valleys, mostly reclaimed by nature, and are a reminder of the industrial past of the area. Much work is ongoing to help conserve some of these structures and to tell the story of its lead mining, smelting and carrying history. The Allen Valleys is also a place rich in wildlife with some of the last remaining flower-rich meadows in England, and large populations of breeding birds such as Curlew, Lapwing, Redshank and Snipe which return to the moorland and pastures every spring. Water voles and red squirrels are also thriving here.

The best places to learn about the area’s mining past is at Allenheads, where the Blacksmith’s Shop information centre is open all year round and you can discover self-guided trails which start in the village. At Allen Mills you can see the old smelt mill being rescued from rampant vegetation and later walk up to the chimneys which carried the poisonous gases from the mill to the fell top (you also get a great view!). For those who want to get active – guided walks, cycle routes, bike hire (including electric bikes), horseriding, angling, canoe-building, and much more are available in the Allen Valleys.

Grass Roots

2016 is the anniversary of the birth of British landscaping genius Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, but did you know he was born in Northumberland? On 30th August 1716, Brown was baptised at St Wilfrid’s Church in Kirkharle, a rural village in the Northumberland countryside. It was on the Kirkharle estate that he learned his trade, working there until the age of 24, surrounded and inspired by the rolling landscapes of the county that remain unspoilt to this day. You can visit St Wilfrid’s Church to see the record of Brown’s baptism, a beautiful Grade I listed church, well worth visiting in this landmark year.

Next to the church is Kirkharle Courtyard, a collection of artisan shops and workshops, a coffee shop and a Capability Brown exhibition, part of which is a plan Brown drew for Kirkharle. Recently re-discovered, Brown never saw his plan come to fruition, but the landscaping and lakes he designed for Kirkharle have now been adapted and incorporated into the estate.
