Berwick Ramparts (Graeme Peacock)

Visit Berwick-upon-Tweed and embark on an adventure around the castle ruins, main guard, town walls and ramparts. Enduring years of conflict and damage, the town located at the mouth of the River Tweed was fought over by England and Scotland, with control changing hands many times. Explore the tremendous Elizabethan town walls, the only surviving example of bastioned walls in Britain, before following the riverside path which leads to Berwick Castle. Snuggled between the

Scottish Border and the Cheviot Hills, you will find Ford and Etal Estates. This beautiful agricultural estate includes over twenty unique attractions, one of which is Etal Castle. Built as a defence against Scots raiders in the mid14th century, the castle was captured by James IV before his defeat at the Battle of Flodden (1513). Be sure to explore the battlefield located nearby on Branxton Hill.

Warkworth Castle (Graeme Peacock)

Chillingham Castle (Graeme Peacock)

A trip to Northumberland wouldn’t be complete without a visit to spinetingling Chillingham Castle. It is rumoured to be one of the most haunted castles in England, so put on a brave face and explore the dungeons and torture chamber. If you’re lucky, you may bump into one of the resident ghosts… If a scare-fest isn’t for you, then take a stroll around the idyllic Italian Gardens famous for having the longest herbaceous border in Northern England. Explore the lake and woodland walks, tip-toeing through the seasonal flowers scattered around your feet. During the 6th century, Bamburgh was chosen by the Kings of Northumbria as their Royal Seat. In 1164 the Great Tower was built atop the towering Whin Sill rock. The castle was under constant attack for many years and was eventually destroyed by gunfire in 1464. After many changes of ownership, the castle was eventually saved from ruin by famed industrialist,

the first Lord Armstrong. Today it is filled with ancient artefacts from on-site archaeological excavations and continues to offer stunning views across to the Farne Islands and Lindisfarne.

was fought over by both Yorkists and Lancastrians. Although it is now in ruin, the bold and powerful scale of the castle offers an overwhelming experience that will take your breath away.

Standing tall on the highest point of Holy Island is Lindisfarne Castle. This 16th century castle is particularly unique as twice a day, at high tide, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne is completely cut off from the mainland. Throughout 2017 the castle is closed to the public as it undergoes major conservation works. Pay a visit to Gertrude Jekyll’s garden, which remains open, a glorious treat for the eyes and the nose with gorgeous gladioli blooming in September.

Home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, Alnwick Castle sits majestically in the centre of the town. Watch the castle burst into view from behind the trees and rerouted river, an image that was created by famous landscape artist, Capability Brown. Explore the luxurious State Rooms, admire one of the finest art collections in the country, the setting for Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey.

Dramatic Dunstanburgh Castle lies on remote headland overlooking the Northumberland coast. The largest castle in Northumberland, Dunstanburgh Castle saw its only military involvement during the War of The Roses (1455-85) when its control

For fantastic views of village, lake and coastline, head to Warkworth Castle, once home to ‘Harry Hotspur’. Explore the great tower, which is in the shape of a Greek cross and has various sizes of windows offering fabulous sweeping views. Warkworth Hermitage is located half a mile away from the castle.

Only accessible by boat, the hermitage is cut into the rock of the river cliff, tucked away underneath the wooded bank.

Rothley Castle (Graeme Peacock)

Our landscapes are rich in history, so let your imagination run wild and envisage the battles of yonder year when exploring our rugged ruins. At Wallington Hall lookout for the remains of Rothley Castle, a gothic folly built for Sir Walter Blackett on the top of Rothley Crags. Visit Edlingham Castle and see the magnificent solar tower which is the best preserved part of the castle; it is believed that a 13th century manor house is concealed beneath. Prudhoe Castle is a stunning Norman castle set along the River Tyne. This mighty fortress survived two sieges and was the only castle in Northumberland to fight off the Scots. Further north, standing boldly by the banks of the River Tweed is Norham Castle. Besieged at least thirteen times, the remains of the great tower still survive. Head to Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens to catch a glimpse of the fortified tower that still stands boldly in the grounds. Aydon Castle is located in tranquil countryside just one mile from Corbridge. The castle is almost entirely intact and complete with an original medieval carved fireplace and a beautiful walled orchard. Once the hunting lodge for the Duke of Northumberland, Kielder Castle now serves as a visitor centre, café and centre for cycling. Head there for a wealth of information and an adventure around the nearby Minotaur Maze – but be careful not to get lost!

From April to September 2017, Hadrian’s Wall attractions will host a spectacular Roman Cavalry exhibition. Telling the tale of Roman Cavalry regiments, attractions along the wall will exhibit a range of finely decorated objects, many on loan from private collections and museums. Cavalry were the elite troops of the Roman army and both rider and horse wore elaborately decorated equipment and armour. Re-enactment events will be held at sites along the 150 miles of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site. On one spectacular weekend there will be a full troop (Turma) of up to 30 Roman cavalrymen coming together to perform training exercises as designed by Hadrian himself 2000 years ago.

Built on the orders of Hadrian after he became Roman Emperor, Hadrian’s Wall stretches 73 miles from east to west. When it was built it boasted 80 milecastles, 17 larger forts and a defensive earthwork, the Vallum, to the south.

Hadrian’s Wall became a World Heritage Site in 1987, joining a list of places that are so special they are deemed important to the whole of humanity. 2017 marks its 30th year of being a World Heritage Site, an anniversary shared with Venice, The Great Wall of China and the Palace of Westminster. Explore bath houses, ramparts and turrets, watch live excavations and learn how to be a Roman soldier; just a few of the activities you can enjoy at the fabulous attractions along Hadrian’s Wall. But Hadrian’s Wall Country isn’t just about Romans, it offers something for all the family – spectacular landscapes, rare wildlife, complete solitude, cosy pubs and welcoming people. If you fancy a walking challenge, the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail is an 84-mile route following the line of Hadrian’s Wall, passing rolling fields and rugged moorland.

The AD122 Hadrian’s Wall bus service is a relaxing way to see the wall with a daily service from April to September (Please check timetables before planning your journey). The on-board commentary will ensure you don’t miss your stop. Many visitors to Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site are struck by the rugged beauty of the surrounding landscape, especially in the central section that lies within the National Park, where the land rises and is dominated by the wave-like skyline of the volcanic Whin Sill. Opening in the summer of 2017, The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre near Bardon Mill, with its year round programme of outdoor activities and events, will inspire you to go further and see more of our glorious countryside.

Terriers on

Belsay Castle

Tour

Oh no, the suitcases are out, that can only mean one thing, we are off to kennels. Hang on, the kennels are in the other direction, we’re going on holiday too - yippee!

River Coquet at Rothbury

With all the excitement, I nearly forgot to introduce myself. I am Rab, a 5 year old Border Terrier and this is my older brother Phin. It turns out we were going for a short break in Northumberland, staying in Coquetdale. Did you know Border Terriers hail from Coquetdale, so this was a trip to our ancestral home? Our adventure began when we stopped at Belsay Hall, Castle & Gardens, run by English Heritage. We had to stay on our leads and weren’t allowed inside, but there was lots to explore outside so that didn’t matter. My favourite part was the Quarry Garden, with its sheer rock faces and large exotic plants, it felt like we were in a jungle.

Rothbury, surrounded by the Northumberland National Park, was our base. A beautiful and peaceful town, there’s a lovely walk along the river bank, plus dog friendly pubs and cafes. We are really active and like many dogs love walking, we even have backpacks so we can carry our own water and snacks! The Simonside Hills and Cheviots are all within easy reach of Rothbury, so we had great fun exploring with the family. Northumberland National Park have a series of walking routes available to download on their website. We chose the 5-mile Drake Stone & Harbottle Walk, starting and finishing at the Forestry Commission Car Park in Harbottle. Our humans got very excited when we arrived at The Drake Stone, a large Fell Sandstone boulder, which local legend suggests has ancient healing powers, plus the views were stunning. Cragside, now managed by the National Trust, was the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity and our humans were amazed by the fascinating gadgets within the house. Dogs aren’t allowed inside but there are over 40 miles of footpaths at Cragside and on lead dogs are welcome. We were feeling energetic so did the 3-milelong Gun Walk. It did include a steep climb, but the views were worth it. We discovered that dogs really do receive a warm Northumbrian welcome at many cafes, pubs and from numerous accommodation providers. For a list of some dog friendly accommodation, go to page 86 or for even more look online at visitnorthumberland.com/pet-friendly Embark on an adventure to Northumberland with your four legged friends.

Follow in the

footsteps of the

Vikings…

From Border reiving to Roman occupation, Northumberland has more than its fair share of turbulent history. We flock to see relics of this past such as Hadrian’s Wall and the uniquely fortified Bastle houses, but we often overlook another monumental moment in the county’s history… Viking invasion! AD793 The sacking of Lindisfarne This was the first ever Viking invasion of the British Isles and signalled the beginning of the ‘Viking Age’. Skim over the sands to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and to a world where a wealth of history and stunning views sit in perfect tranquility. Don’t forget to check the tide times before travelling! As you cross the causeway, look out for the line of wooden poles across the sand known as ‘Pilgrim’s Way’ – the original route from the mainland.

Lindisfarne Priory Sat nav TD15 2RX

Lindisfarne Castle Sat nav TD15 2SH

Founded by St Aidan in AD635, the site owes its fame to the great Northumbrian holy man St Cuthbert, who lived and died there. Stroll around the monastic buildings which formed the living quarters of the monks. Imagine this peaceable lifestyle being shattered by the marauding Vikings.

In the 16th century, stones from the now-ruined Priory were used to build a fort atop the ancient black basalt known as the Whin Sill at the tip of the island to defend the English-held harbour from the Scots. The idyllic location of the castle has intrigued and inspired for centuries.*

Whilst there be sure to visit a later addition to Holy Island, Lindisfarne Castle.

Travel down the beautiful coastline made up of endless beaches, rugged cliffs and undulating dunes. Can you believe the Vikings raided this for the next 70 years? Stop off at Druridge Bay, a large stretch of beach recently used as a location for the TV remake of Viking legend ‘Beowulf’. No pillaging!

* Due to a major restoration project Lindisfarne Castle will be closed during 2017 and early 2018. The grounds, garden and lime kilns will remain open to visitors.

BAMBURGH CASTLE

Hexham Abbey

AD993 Bamburgh Castle

At this time, the kingdom of Northumbria extended from the River Humber to the Forth of Firth spanning coast to coast. It is believed that in the area of Northumbria known as Bernicia, in which modern-day Northumberland now sits, resistance to the Viking rule was the strongest. We’re hardy folk! However… AD875 Vikings begin campaign to conquer Bernicia and ransack the monastic town of Hexham. Hexham Abbey Sat nav NE46 3NB The Abbey is one of the earliest surviving Christian foundations in Britain. Originally a Benedictine Abbey, then an Augustinian Priory and the Parish Church of Hexham, it was founded in AD674 by St Wilfrid. The crypt was lost underground for hundreds of years and is estimated to be over 1,300 years old.

AD993 The Vikings seize control of Bamburgh Castle Bamburgh Castle Sat nav NE69 7DF This was the most important Anglo-Saxon stronghold in northern Northumbria, known as Din Guayrdi – Din meaning fortress. The current castle is predominantly Norman in design, but evidence shows there has been a stronghold here since Ida the Flamebearer built the first wooden stockade in AD547. This act was the beginning of the end for the kingdom of Northumbria, which paved the way for the Northumberland you see today. As you stand on the battlements looking out across the sea, that’s quite a silver lining!

Whether it is the shy red squirrel, seen fleetingly in our native woodlands and conifer forests, our black grouse and curlews calling over the moors, or the wildfowl and coastal birds wading along our glorious coastline, you will be spoilt for choice. Even at night, our pristine dark skies remind us all that these precious environments should be celebrated and conserved for future generations to enjoy.

Opening in the summer of 2017, The Sill is named after the famous volcanic feature, the Whin Sill, upon which the Emperor Hadrian built his wall in AD122. As Northumberland’s newest visitor attraction, it will act as a gateway to the National Park and other protected landscapes in the region, with a walk-on grass roof and public viewing platform overlooking the Wall and surrounding vistas. Inside, you will be able to explore an amazing interactive exhibition that will help explain how our landscapes have evolved over thousands of years, and how they continue to evolve. Relax in the cafe savouring the local food. There will also be an information desk, staffed by knowledgeable and friendly staff who will help you get the best out of your day, with a well-stocked retail area selling outdoor gear and locally crafted gifts. Thanks to a brand-new 90-bed Youth Hostel, you’ll be able to stay on site, providing a great base to explore Hadrian’s Wall, the Tyne Valley and Northumberland National Park.

Pitmen Painters Exhibition (Woodhorn Museum)

Northumberland

inspired art

One look at works by renowned landscape painter JMW Turner, such as ‘Wreckers Coast of Northumberland’ and ‘Holy Island, Northumberland’, proves artists have long been inspired by our endless skies and dramatic landscapes. But Turner wasn’t the only artist in love with the most northern county in England. We’ve picked three very different examples of the creative pulse hidden within the heart of Northumberland.

LS Lowry Though known for his depiction of urban life in the Manchester and Lancashire area, you can follow in the footsteps of artist LS Lowry through the streets of Berwickupon-Tweed. He had a great love for England’s most northerly town, regularly holidaying there from the mid1930’s until just before his death in 1976. During his time in Berwick he produced more than twenty paintings, with scenes featuring the Town Hall and Spittal Beach.

Newbiggin Art Trail Further down the coast, pop to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea to follow another art trail. Stroll along the lovely curved promenade with an ice-cream and look out to sea. Within the bay stands Sean Henry’s ‘Couple’, the first ever permanent offshore sculpture in the UK which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. From there, follow the Newbiggin Art Trail around the town to find a mix of community, historical and modern artworks inspired by local life.

A lasting memento If you’re looking for some artwork to take away with you, there are a variety of shops dotted around the county. For contemporary pieces by local artists, you’ll find plenty to choose from in the shopping pods at Amble Harbour Village. If you prefer a little more history to your art, you can pick up some great pieces at Graham Smith Antiques in Horsley.

Pitmen Painters At Woodhorn Museum & Northumberland Archives you can see most of the works by The Ashington Group, known as the Pitmen Painters. Founded in 1934 just to ‘study something different’, these paintings provide a fascinating insight into the everyday life of the local coal miners and their families. They depict everything from wives wallpapering the kitchen to the dangerous world of the coal face.

Tickle your taste buds Take a measure of coast and countryside, add dedicated local producers and blend with talented chefs. The results? Outstanding food and drink to dine out on in restaurants, inns and cafes and to take home as well. To ensure you have a true Northumbrian experience, look out for the Produced in Northumberland logo during your stay. This will tell you which B&Bs, hotels and cafes offer locally sourced Northumberland food. St Cuthbert’s House Bed & Breakfast in Seahouses take great pride in sourcing as many local products as they can, including meat, fish, eggs, honey and homemade marmalade. For an off the scale foodie experience, a visit to the Northumberland coast is a must. Sample local fish and chips, Northumbrian crab or luscious Lindisfarne oysters. You must try a kipper, believed to have originated in Northumberland; there

is much debate whether this was in the coastal village of Craster or Seahouses, which is home to the UK’s oldest working smokehouse. This smoked fish is exported to food lovers across the world and is reputedly popular with the British Royal Family. All our producers use traditional methods to smoke their fish. Northumberland’s food heritage doesn’t end there. Did you know that Earl Grey tea was originally blended in Northumberland at Howick Hall? Using bergamot to offset the strong taste of lime in the local water, a Chinese mandarin specially blended the tea for Prime Minister Earl Grey.

New

discoveries every season

Northumberland is known for amazing landscapes and beautiful beaches, but did you know that the National Trust cares for miles of the coastline and countryside? Some of Northumberland’s most iconic houses, castles and gardens are also lovingly looked after by the National Trust for you to enjoy all year round. Early in the year, there’s nothing more inspiring than a spring walk along Hadrian’s Wall, which celebrates 30 years of its World Heritage Site status this year, or from April onwards, see the unforgettable sight of over 85,000 pairs of puffins and other seabirds returning to nest on the Farne Islands. A real must-see on your visit is Cragside, the dream home of Lord Armstrong. The Victorian house was lightyears ahead of its time and the huge estate bursts into colour every June with thousands of rhododendrons. If you’re visiting the county in summer, find a picnic spot at Cherryburn or pull up a deck chair in the gardens at Seaton Delaval Hall and relax with an ice cream. As autumn emerges, Wallington’s west woods become a riot of colour - perfect for walks, but if you visit when the leaves have begun to fall then it’s even easier to spot the playful red squirrels who are thriving on the estate. As the sun sets on the year in Northumberland, it’s still a wonderful time to visit, and the unspoilt shores of Newton and Embleton Links are ideal for blowing away the cobwebs with breath-taking views.

Places to explore… Allen Banks and Staward Gorge A grand Victorian wilderness garden with woodland walks, picnic spots and plenty of wildlife. Cherryburn One of Northumberland’s greatest artists, Thomas Bewick, was born in this farmyard cottage. Cragside Home of innovator Lord Armstrong, filled with gadgets and surrounded by 1000 acres of man-made landscape. Embleton and Newton Links This sandy beach is backed by wildflower rich dunes and looks onto the ruined Dunstanburgh Castle. Farne Islands One of England’s most exciting wildlife experiences, the islands are home to thousands of seabirds and seals. George Stephenson’s Birthplace Discover the humble birthplace of a great railway pioneer. Hadrian’s Wall A World Heritage Site that’s famous worldwide for its Roman history and fantastic views of the landscape. Lindisfarne Castle This 16th century castle is closed during 2017 for vital conservation work that will ensure future generations can enjoy this special place. If you’re visiting Holy Island you can still explore the village, lime kilns, walled garden and stunning shoreline surrounding the castle. Seaton Delaval Hall Set in beautiful gardens, this Vanbrugh masterpiece bears the scars of its colourful history. Wallington Make yourself at home at Wallington. The woods, gardens and house are yours to explore.

Grading

Accessible accommodation

If an accommodation provider has a star rating this means they have been quality assessed by either Visit England or the AA. Gradings are awarded by professional assessors from the awarding body and they assess every aspect of the experience including the comfort of the bed, the quality of the breakfast and the cleanliness of the accommodation. Please be aware that ratings may change throughout the year, so if you have specific requirements please check with the accommodation establishment.

If you have particular mobility, visual or hearing needs, look out for the National Accessible Scheme Logos. Properties displaying these logos have met the relevant National Accessible scheme criteria. For clarity on the adverts the awards will be represented by the symbols below.

Awards VisitEngland

Visit England Gold and Silver awards are given to the accommodation providors that ‘go the extra mile’ to make your stay a special one. Breakfast Award - awarded to accommodation providers that achieve exceptionally high scores for the quality of their breakfasts including choice of dishes available, presentation and culinary skills, quality of ingredients and hospitality. For clarity on the adverts the award will be represented by the outline egg symbol shown above.

For further information on Visit England’s Grading system, Awards and Accessible Accommodation visit www.qualityintourism.com

Complaints If you have any issues that have not been resolved by the proprietor/manager and which you would like to bring to the attention of the assessor body, please write to:

AA

The AA Gold Star Highly Commended Award is awarded to guest accommodation establishments that achieve a high percentage score within their rating. Breakfast and Dinner Awards - awarded to guest accommodation who provide a very special breakfast or dinner, with an emphasis on freshly prepared local ingredients.

Welcome Logos Look out for the Welcome logos, these are awarded by VisitEngland to accommodation providers that offer extra facilities for walkers, cyclists, families or pets.

Owned and run by the same Northumbrian family since 1967

Owning a caravan holiday home or holiday lodge on a Northumberland holiday park can be a wonderful way to make the most of your hard-earned leisure time. The businesses on these pages will be delighted to welcome you, without obligation, to view their parks and currently available holiday home stock.

Coquetdale Holiday Park is located in the peaceful market town of Rothbury, situated on the outskirts of a conservation area set within 25 acres of privately owned land with blissful panoramic views overlooking the Coquet Valley, Simonside Hills and the Cragside Estate. The Park offer’s it’s holiday home owners the perfect country escape. We offer a selection of starter caravans, affordable holiday homes and luxury lodges. Coast Sandy beaches, undulating dunes, two national nature reserves; the Northumberland Coastline is simply breathtaking. Standing proudly along the coast are the iconic castles of Warkworth, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Lindisfarne just waiting to be explored.

Don’t miss...

• Newbiggin Maritime Centre • Shopping for gifts and keepsakes at Amble Harbour Village • Proud mining heritage at Woodhorn

Berwick-upon-Tweed, at the most northerly tip of Northumberland, is a coastal town with four sandy beaches, riverside walks and inspiring exhibitions in the town’s galleries. Skim over the sands and causeway and prepare to enter another world; Holy Island is cut off twice daily from the rest of the world by fast moving tides, so make sure you check tide times before travelling. A visit to the quaint market town of Alnwick with its cobbled streets and grand architecture wouldn’t be complete without exploring Alnwick Castle, where parts of Harry Potter and Downtown Abbey were filmed, and The Alnwick Garden which offers fun for all the family.

Long distance walk St. Oswald’s Way explores beautiful landscapes and enthralling Northumberland history. The route begins at Holy Island, which was once the home of St. Oswald.

GOLD

The King of Northumbria in the early 7th Century, St. Oswald played a major role in bringing Christianity to his people. Follow the route south along the spectacular Northumberland coast before heading inland across sweeping countryside to Hadrian’s Wall in the south. St. Oswald’s Way is divided into six sections between 13.5 and 19 miles long. If you don’t fancy such a challenging walk there are also 24 short walks, 8 of which are designated Easy Access as they are short walks designed with young families, or people with mobility problems, in mind.

Hadrian’s Wall & North Pennines

Hadrian’s Wall, the Tyne Valley & the North

Pennines

The Tyne Valley has a wealth of awe inspiring scenery to be discovered; the most famous part of the landscape is Hadrian’s Wall, built by Roman Emperor Hadrian almost 2000 years ago and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hexham is a bustling market town, whose jewel in the crown is Hexham Abbey. The site has been a place of worship for over 1,300 years and now boasts a state of the art, interactive visitor centre. With tumbling waterfalls, vast heather moors, peatlands and hay meadows, the North Pennines is home to an array of wildlife including 80% of the UK’s black grouse population. Explore the moors on horseback, or take advantage of the Electric Bike Network for some help tackling those hills!
