Northumberland Holiday and Short Breaks Guide 2015
Castles, forts and pele towers dot our countryside. Scattered across the county are fortified bastle houses, in which farmers lived above their livestock in an attempt to protect them during Northumberland’s lawless Border Reiver years. Alnwick Castle is home to the Duke of Northumberland to this day, and Bamburgh Castle was once the ancient seat of the kings of Northumbria. Chillingham Castle, reputedly the most haunted in England, is still intact, unlike the spectacular ruins of Dunstanburgh and Warkworth.
Visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and experience the serenity of Lindisfarne Priory, a far cry from when Viking Raids pillaged Northumberland’s coasts, massacring the monks on the island. Nowadays, you can enjoy spectacular, tranquil views from 16th Century Lindisfarne Castle. Hadrian’s Wall, spanning 73 miles, leaves a lasting impression on anyone who visits. Along the wall are archaeological sites and museums telling the fascinating story of Rome’s rise and fall, and mysteries yet to be solved, like at Housesteads Roman Fort where you can speculate about the ‘Murder House’. Our rugged landscapes, hay meadows, wild moors, and coastlines are home to an abundance of wildlife species that are often rare elsewhere. With two areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and England’s most tranquil National Park, Northumberland has an abundance of wildlife such as red squirrels, otters and black grouse. Wonderful tea rooms and cafes serving delicious homebaked treats provide the perfect end to a wild day of exploring in the National Park; guilt-free cakes - the longer the walk, the bigger the slice!
The wildlife hide in the West Woods at Wallington offers you the chance to get close to native red squirrels, but for a uniquely Northumbrian wild experience, visit the ‘Beasts of Chillingham’. This herd of white cattle are the last wild herd in Britain and thought to be the sole survivors of the cattle that roamed through the forests of Northumberland centuries ago. These remarkable beasts have never been touched by human hands, so are completely untamed. Between May and July, the Farne Islands and Coquet Island offer amazing views of 23 species of seabirds including approximately 37,000 pairs of Puffins and Roseate Terns, one of our rarest nesting seabirds. You will often see grey seals resting on the rocks watching boat trips sail by.
‘Northumberland, the land that’s just as good with the lights off ’ Northumberland International Dark Sky Park is a vast area which combines Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water & Forest Park. It is the largest dark sky park in Europe, meaning it is one of the best places to enjoy the wonders of the night sky.
Between October and April is the best time to visit, as that is when the night skies are longest and clearest. Allen Banks, maintained by the National Trust, has recently been awarded the status of Dark Sky Discovery Site ensuring that this ancient semi-natural woodland remains a perfect place for a spot of stargazing. You can discover Northumberland’s wild spirit whilst staying in comfort in one of the traditional yurts, shepherds huts, and tepees found throughout Northumberland. visitnorthumberland.com/wild

Northumberland’s turbulent history is evident in our stunning landscapes. From the invasion and unrest of the Roman occupation to Viking invasions, civil wars and Reiver raiding, all have left their mark on the county. Now a different kind of ‘wild spirit’ can be found in Northumberland: rare wildlife, miles of coastline, rolling hills and beautiful countryside just waiting to be explored.

into
Northumberland’s story
Rich with castles, abbeys, priories, historic houses and Roman history, Northumberland is a county steeped in cultural heritage. Almost 2000 years on, the awe-inspiring World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, is still here. The 73-mile long Wall links a range of forts, winding through some of the most beautiful countryside you’ll ever see. Parts of this impressive feat of engineering are now hidden from view, but you’ll find forts, museums and live action events, all just waiting to help you discover our fascinating Roman past. English Heritage is guardian of four of the best preserved Roman sites; Housesteads, Chesters and Birdowald Roman Forts and Corbridge Roman Town. English Heritage also cares for some of England’s most spectacular castles. Walk the almighty stretch of coastline up to the twice besieged Dunstanburgh Castle or visit Aydon Castle, tucked away in woodland, just a stone’s throw from Hadrian’s Wall. Once home to the powerful Percy family, Warkworth Castle was and remains one of the largest and most impressive fortresses in North East England. Belsay Hall, Castle & Gardens situated between Morpeth and Ponteland, is a gem in Northumberland’s crown. With exotic gardens that are a sight and smell to behold, a grand Hall inspired by a honeymoon trip to Greece, a Medieval castle and a Victorian Tearoom, there really is something for everyone at Belsay.

Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens
Visitors to Belsay are often surprised by the microclimate in the Quarry Gardens. The unusual temperatures and conditions encourage rare species to flourish. You may find Rhododendrons flowering in April, instead of June - usual flowering times go right out of the window! Original home to the famous Lindisfarne Gospels, Lindisfarne Priory is a truly tranquil island escape and a ‘must see’ when you cross the causeway to Holy Island.

The Coast
Snow on the Cheviots ( NCC )
Northumberland’s dramatic coastline boasts spectacular sandy beaches, undulating dunes, and rocky cliffs. The Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covers 39 miles of coast, incorporating two national nature reserves and a host of conservation sites. Standing guard along the coast are the iconic castles of Warkworth, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh, and Lindisfarne, while slightly inland are Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Garden. Holy Island, the birthplace of the Lindisfarne Gospels, is cut off twice daily from the rest of the world by fast moving tides, so make sure you carefully check the crossing times before making your journey. Scattered a couple of miles off the coast, the Farne Islands are a haven for seabirds including a large colony of puffins.
The Cheviots Nestling up to the Scottish Border, the hills and valleys of The Cheviots were the stomping grounds of the infamous Border Reivers. The peaceful landscape at Flodden Battlefield, in the Ford and Etal Estate, belies the bloody clash between England and Scotland in 1513 that changed the course of history.

Combining magnificent medieval architecture with sumptuous Italianate State Rooms, Alnwick Castle has been used as a film location for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts and, more recently, Downton Abbey.

Ranging from challenging long distance trails with cosy pubs and welcoming guest houses en route, to leisurely circular walks through pretty hamlets and wildlife rich coast and countryside, Northumberland has it all. We asked a few of Northumberland’s walking experts to give us their highlights on Northumberland’s long distance walks. The Northumberland Coast Path
St. Oswald’s Way
Discover castles, golden beaches, wildlife and history on the Northumberland Coast Path. It is made for walking. If you want something remote, head north of Bamburgh Castle and past Stag Rock to a wilder coast. The sea is on one side, sand dunes are on the other and on the far horizon stands Lindisfarne Castle. Alternatively, the path from Craster to Dunstanburgh offers a gentler walk, and features a pleasant stretch along the dunes. Keep an eye out for swirls of lava that can be seen just above high water mark!
So much history: Hadrian’s Wall at one end, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne at the other, and some of the best walking in Northumberland in between. Perhaps the best section and certainly the most magical is the Pilgrims’ Way, the traditional path between the mainland and Lindisfarne. You’ll never forget it, three miles across the sea, barefoot of course, the mud between your toes and the seals ‘singing’ you a serenade as you walk in the footsteps of the saints.

Hadrian's Wall Path Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail, is an unbroken 84-mile signposted trail stretching from coast-to-coast, from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west. It passes through some of the most beautiful parts of England - from rolling fields and rugged moorland to the vibrant cities of Newcastle and Carlisle. If you don't have time to walk the whole route, there are many circular walks available which take in some of the most scenic areas around the Wall.

The route is among the most varied and exciting of its type - encompassing everything from the rugged terrain of the Cheviot Hills, to the enormous sandy beaches of the Northumberland coast. Furthermore, the trail is dotted with ancient castles, churches and abbeys, as well as charming villages and an array of wildlife.

-upon-Tweed
An Elizabethan walled town that in 2015 celebrates 900 years of turbulent history, tradition and culture. On an estuary with golden beaches, a thriving arts scene and family entertainment, Berwick has the perfect mix for a rewarding visit. Where else, within one short hour, can you walk on dramatic Elizabethan fortifications, see the country’s first purpose-built infantry Barracks, and view an iconic 28 arch railway viaduct designed by Robert Stephenson? All within a stunning setting alongside one of Britain’s finest salmon rivers, and with views up the Tweed valley and out across the estuary as far as Holy Island and beyond.
away
If you are staying anywhere in Northumberland the wide hilltop vistas and sheltered valleys of Northumberland National Park are never more than 30 minutes away, and with 700 miles of footpaths and many more of traffic free roads, getting out and active is full of rich rewards.
Berwick Town Hall ( Danny J Spring )
A townscape shaped by a river A boat-building town from the eighteenth century, and centre of a thriving salmon fishing industry from the nineteenth century, Berwick, along with former fishing village Tweedmouth and the seaside resort of Spittal, has stone harbour walls and a cobbled quayside beneath the massive ramparts.
With less than 2,000 residents in the 400 square miles running from Hadrian’s Wall to the Cheviot Hills on the border of Scotland, Northumberland National Park is justifiably the country’s most tranquil area. This is a landscape of farms, forests and heather moors, with crystal clear waters rushing down from their source in the high peat bogs into some of our best salmon rivers; all lying under the canopy of dark night skies crackling with stars that form Northumberland International Dark Sky Park.
Built between and around these iconic historic sites are Georgian buildings of great character, linked by cobbled lanes and narrow archways. This is a town packed with interest and tradition, and even boasts a building which leans more than the Tower of Pisa - a newly restored Granary which is now a youth hostel, art gallery and bistro!
There are opportunities for everyone to blow away the cobwebs from a gentle stroll ending with a cosy tearoom in one of our pretty and historic villages, to a hike along Hadrian’s Wall or the Cheviot Hills. These high points are both crossed by the Pennine Way which celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2015 as the country’s first National Trail.
Festival Frenzy and a 900th Birthday Party
On the main East Coast line from London, with regular services from Edinburgh and Newcastle, and both long-distance and local bus services, Berwick has to be the ideal car-free destination, a springboard for several long-distance walks and cycling routes, as well as a compact town with maximum interest for day visits. Close to the A1, Berwick is perfectly located for shortbreaks or longer stays to explore everything it has to offer, as well as Northumberland and the Borders: Holy Island, the Farne Islands and Bamburgh Castle are all within easy reach.
The nice thing about the National Park is that there are as many picturesque spots for just playing or sitting and staring as there are for vigorous activity, some offering easy access for wheelchairs and buggies such as Walltown country park on Hadrian’s Wall or the Breamish Valley in the heart of the Cheviots. If you’d rather not drive, you can see some of the best views by taking the bus. AD122 runs a regular service between railway stations and the sites of Hadrian’s Wall, while Spirit Buses links the villages of the scenic Coquet Valley. To get the best out of your visit, speak to the friendly staff at the award-winning Once Brewed National Park Visitor Centre and TIC on Hadrian’s Wall. Military Road, Bardon Mill, Hexham, NE47 7AN

Enjoy our famous Craster Kippers and Lindisfarne Oysters with the stunning backdrop of the Northumberland Coast. From quintessential country pubs to cheerful coastal inns, our public houses each have a character all of their own. The Ship Inn, overlooking the beautiful sandy beach of Newton Haven produces 20 beers in their own micro brewery - the beer travelling just 15ft from brewery to cellar! Northumberland is also a haven for fine dining with 2 AA rosette restaurants at Matfen Hall and Eshott Hall and a 1AA rosette restaurant at Doxford Hall. We love a cuppa in Northumberland and we have an array of cafes and tearooms to choose from. Howick Hall, the birthplace of Earl Grey and his namesake tea is the perfect place to enjoy afternoon tea, or relax in the quirky surroundings of a converted 1957 railway carriage at Carriages Tearoom in Bellingham.
Lake view at Kielder
Covering almost a quarter of the county, Northumberland National Park is officially the country’s most tranquil location. It is a place for adventure or relaxation, where you can be as active or as laid back as you want. Tea rooms and cafes serving amazing home baking provide the perfect end to a day in the National Park.

Hadrian's Cycleway
Coast Path ( Northumberland Coast AONB )
One of the most popular long distance cycle routes in the country, the Hadrian's Cycleway winds its way for 174 miles between Ravenglass and Tyneside. The 33 miles in Northumberland visit the iconic central sections of the Wall at every opportunity. The undulating middle section of Hadrian’s Cycleway literally passes numerous ‘doorways’ into Roman history. West to east is usually wind assisted and once you reach the River Tyne, not far from the old Roman town of Corbridge, the remaining section to the North Sea is entirely flat.
Sandstone Way
New for
The Coast & Castles route extends for 192 miles between Newcastle and Edinburgh, 85 miles of which follows the magnificent Northumberland coastline. This flat, scenic coastal route offers constantly changing views of the sea and provides fascinating glimpses into the coastline’s history and culture. Magnificent castles, including Bamburgh and Lindisfarne, stand proudly and defiantly along its route. Rocky headlands protect countless coves and bays, with onshore reserves and coastal islands providing wildlife havens that thread the Coast & Castles Cycle Route together.
& around
2015
The Sandstone Way is a fantastic new 120 mile mountain biking route between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Hexham that runs along the Sandstone Ridge through the heart of North Northumberland. Linking numerous sandstone features, crags and outcrops, the route links the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding National Beauty with Northumberland National Park, making it one of the most scenic rides in England. Primarily aimed at mountain bikers, as much of the route as possible is off-road and the route safely crosses rivers, four main roads and two railway lines giving a constant flow. Featuring a varied terrain, it takes advantage of an interesting mix of double-width dirt tracks, sections of single-track, un-surfaced lanes and bridleways of all types. The Sandstone Way starts/ends at Berwick upon Tweed and Hexham both of which are served by rail. Along the route are numerous villages and small communities including Wooler, Rothbury, Elsdon and Bellingham; each an ideal place to pause and take refreshment.
Coast & Castles Cycle Route
Getting to
Eight optional loops are also offered, enhancing the linear route to provide great ‘day rides’ for those who wish to cycle back to their starting point. Accessible to all abilities, from families and less experienced mountain bikers, to those at intermediate standard and fit competent mountain bikers, this new cycle route is certainly one to add to your list! The Sandstone Way is funded by Northumberland National Park Authority, Northumberland County Council, DEFRA, Northumberland Coast AONB & Tyne Valley MTB Club.
Northumberland By Car
By Train
Heading northbound into Northumberland you’ll pass the iconic Angel of the North on the A1 at Gateshead. Enjoy a scenic drive southbound from Scotland where the A1 crosses the magnificent River Tweed. From the west, take the A69 which runs parallel with Hadrian’s Wall.
Less than three hours from London Kings Cross, stations on the East Coast mainline from London include Newcastle, Morpeth, Alnmouth and Berwick-upon-Tweed. Northern Rail operates a service along the East Coast line with stops in-between.
Explore Northumberland by car, taking in lovely landscapes, dramatic viewpoints and fascinating history along the way. Drive the Northumberland Coastal Route, a 39-mile stretch spanning the coastline, taking in seaside villages like Seahouses and Alnmouth. Alnwick, Berwick, Hexham and Morpeth all have free parking in council car parks. You need to display a parking disc for short stay parking, these are available from tourist information centres, libraries & local businesses - always check signs for more information.
Connecting services stop at towns along the Tyne Valley/Hadrian’s Wall corridor, including Haltwhistle, Hexham, Corbridge and Prudhoe.
By Bus Make for Northumberland with coach operator National Express which stops at numerous points. Catch the Mega Bus to Newcastle and connect with regular local services from Newcastle to towns and villages throughout Northumberland. Northumberland has an excellent bus service with extra routes running during summer months and at peak times.
Ford and Etal ( Alan McPhail )
By Sea Just 20 minutes drive from the Port of Tyne International Passenger Terminal at Royal Quays, North Shields and you’re in Northumberland! DFDS Seaways run a shuttle bus service from the Terminal to Newcastle Central Station if you’re travelling car-free.

In Elizabethan times the border between Scotland and England was home to the notorious Border Reivers for whom interclan robbery and violence were a way of life. Farmers lived in a state of constant alert and built fortified homes called Bastle Houses in which they lived above their precious livestock.
Small peaceful site adjacent to the farmyard of a working farm. Ideal base for coast, hills and Scottish Borders.

1000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest play home to this magnificent, elegant Edwardian mansion house. Sympathetically extended, the interiors are almost as dramatic as the exterior. This is very old world grandeur with a modern twist. Enjoy the warmth of welcome as you arrive and immerse yourself in the luxury that the hotel has to offer. Choose to dine in one of restaurants; Hadrians Brasserie - offering understated cuisine locally sourced, Dukes Grill - specialising in steak and seafood or the Claret Jug - with a relaxed atmosphere and informal dining. Take time to spoil yourself in the recently refurbished spa offering a delicious array of ESPA treatments or simply unwind in the steam room, sauna or take a swim in the indoor pool. If outdoor is more your thing, it doesn't get much better than this. Choose a bracing country walk around the estate or choose to play one of the 2 PGA Championship 18 hole golf courses - take on the challenge of The Hunting Course often described as the ‘Augusta of the North’. If excitement and adventure are what you crave - we have these too. Based on site are Allout Adventures who offer 4x4 off road driving, quad biking and much more. After all of this excitement retire to the 19th bar for a well earned drink. Surely you deserve this?
