In this case, the name says it all – this district is full of adventure for the whole family. From the can’tmiss National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, to the rush of live horseracing at Remington Park, to visiting Oklahoma City’s wildest residents at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens, there’s plenty of fun for the young and young at heart.

Make friends with the animal kingdom at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens. You can feed giraffes at the Giraffe Feeding Platform or Lorikeets at Explorikeet Adventures, and you can touch stingrays at Stingray Bay. And be sure to visit some of the zoo’s newest residents, the Asian elephants named Bamboo and Chai that arrived in Oklahoma City in May 2015. Sample Oklahoma City’s Western heritage at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. In addition to its world-class art and exhibits, this museum

is also home to Prosperity Junction, a replica turn-of-thecentury cattle town. Experience the thrill of scientific discovery at Science Museum Oklahoma. Kids of all ages will love exploring eight acres of handson science experiences with thousands of space, aviation and cultural artifacts in the mix. This is especially true in the new “CurioCity” exhibit, a 20,000-square-foot area of discovery that uses interactive devices and creative settings to encourage learning through play.

Oklahoma City’s foodie scene is alive and well in the Asian District, where an influx of Vietnamese immigrants in the 1970s created a hub now known for its Asian fusion cuisine. Here you will find some of the best Asian restaurants in OKC, including authentic Vietnamese food that rivals any found this side of the Pacific.

Grab a bowl of phõ. The Asian District is best experienced through food, and it’s hard to beat this traditional Vietnamese noodle soup. Favorites with the locals include Pho Cuong and Pho Lien Hoa. Eat beyond Asia.

Want to experience an up-and-coming district right in the heart of downtown? Equal parts historic and revitalized, Film Row was once home to the film distribution offices for Hollywood’s major studios. It’s now home to a mix of artistic businesses, locally-owned restaurants and more.

Grab a bite at one of OKC’s family-owned eateries. Located at the corner of Sheridan and Shartel avenues, Caeli’s Sweets, Eats & Bar offers allnatural and fresh ingredients in a family-owned atmosphere. Can it get any better? Yes, it can, because they have made-from-scratch desserts that change daily and the perfect patio from which to enjoy them. Sweet. Relive the rad ‘80s at Flashback RetroPub.

Get your retail kicks.

Check out Oklahoma art.

Local retailer Prairie Gothic recently renovated the 1930s Milk Bottle Building, one of Route 66’s most iconic buildings. The shop carries local art and curated finds from local estate sales and thrift stores, with midcentury charm that perfectly matches their Mother Road location.

It doesn’t get more Oklahoman than the IAO (Individual Artists of Oklahoma) Gallery. In addition to the two stunning gallery spaces with visual art, they also present poetry, film and performances – all by emerging and established Oklahoman artists.

www.VisitOKC.com

The district’s culinary influences travel far beyond Asian cuisine. Be sure to visit Cafe Kacao for a Guatemalan-style brunch. Or grab a cup-of-joe and a vegetarian meal from The Red Cup, another café that perfectly captures the bohemian and ecclectic vibe of this district.

With its vintage arcade games, Rubik’s Cube cocktail tables and ‘80s-themed Karaoke, you’ll feel like you’ve gone “Back to the Future” at OKC’s only ‘80s-theme bar. Enjoy a drink and take on Mario, Donkey Kong, Qbert and any of the other 30+ arcade games. Leg warmers and Hammer pants are optional.

Located north of downtown along Broadway Avenue, the Automobile Alley district was originally home to the city’s car dealerships, a fact that is immortalized in the neon signs that still hang from its original buildings. The past and the present have combined to make this district effortlessly cool with lots to offer, including some of Oklahoma City’s best shopping, dining and nightlife.

Bricktown

E N T E R TA I N M E N T D I S T R I C T Just a short walk from downtown hotels, event venues and attractions, this former warehouse district is filled with restaurants, nightlife and entertainment options. From taking a cruise along the Bricktown Canal to catching an Oklahoma City Dodger’s game at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, Bricktown is a favorite destination for visitors and locals alike. And just north of Bricktown is historic Deep Deuce, where you can find more great restaurants and nightlife options.

As one of Bricktown’s newest attractions, Brickopolis is amping up the district’s level of family-friendly fun by offering miniature golf, laser tag, arcade games and multiple dining options.

about okc

Schedule a play date at Brickopolis.

Enjoy a night out on the town. Bricktown has plenty of nightlife options, but we recommend the rock-and-roll dueling pianos of Michael Murphy’s. Part concert, part comedy roast, this show is sure to have you rolling with laughter and tapping your toes to the requestdriven music. Cruise the mile-long Bricktown Canal on a Bricktown Water Taxi. This 40-minute trip is the perfect way to tour through Bricktown, from the eastern edge of downtown all the way to the northern edge of the Oklahoma River. All taxis are staffed by ambassadors that narrate points of interest along the way and give a feel for the unique history and culture of the area. Explore Deep Deuce like a local.

www.VisitOKC.com

The Deep Deuce District, located just north of Bricktown, was the heart of Oklahoma City’s African-American neighborhood in the 1920’s and 30’s, and during that time the district was known for its incredible jazz music. Music legends Jimmy Rushing and Charlie Christian both called Deep Deuce home, as did Ralph Ellison, the author of Invisible Man. Today, Deep Deuce is a popular urban housing location and has several neighborhood hangouts like WSKY Lounge, a whisky club offering more than 250 bottles of whisky and almost 400 spirits. Other local favorites include Slaughter’s Hall, Urban Johnnie’s and Anchor Down, which is a gourmet corn dog eatery (yes, we said gourmet) located in a shipping container. Trust us, it is worth trying.

Uptown 23rd Midtown On the northern edge of downtown and just west of Automobile Alley, the Midtown district connects the hustle and bustle of downtown with the stately historic neighborhoods to its north. With a mix of local restaurants, neighborhood pubs and unique shops, it’s a great place to experience the best of OKC’s recent urban renaissance.

Grab a cup of joe at Elemental. Elemental Coffee Roasters imports and roasts some of the finest coffees available and serves them at its coffee shop, which offers a full menu of espresso-based drinks, brewed coffee and fresh food. Be sure to pay a visit during the weekend to sample its delicious brunch menu. Strike out at Dust Bowl. This 12-lane bowling alley harkens back to the heyday of bowling with its retro-inspired décor (think wood paneling and shag carpets). Located below Fassler Hall, you can bowl a few frames and then walk upstairs to enjoy beers and brats at this German-inspired beer garden. If you enjoy the vintage-bar vibe, take a short walk and pay a visit to R&J’s Supper Club as well.

Uptown is home to one of the latest neighborhood revitalizations in OKC and is gaining quite the local reputation as a fun, easy place to dine, shop and drink. The attractions in Uptown are casual, very accessible and are largely owned by local proprietors eager to please OKC’s residents and visitors alike. It’s also home to the historic Gold Dome building, a Buckminster Fuller-inspired geodesic dome design that lies on the border of Uptown and OKC’s Asian District (see page 15).

Do some serious dining. Restaurant options are abundant in Uptown, from fast casual to more upscale. Visit Pizzeria Gusto for authentic Neapolitan pizza from a wood-fired oven. The Drake, one of the newest restaurants to open in this district, offers family-style seafood platters. For a more eclectic menu (and one filled with Phish/ Grateful Dead references), Guyutes offers elevated street food drawing inspiration from a wide range of cuisine styles. Fill up (your glass) at The Pump Bar. The Pump Bar began life in 1929 as a Texaco service station. It’s now one of the hippest new places to grab a drink in OKC. Be sure to venture out back to the gaming area to make new friends over a game of cornhole. Test your puzzle-solving skills.

With a rotating schedule of food trucks, you’ll never get tired of the cuisine at Bleu Garten. Its open-air dining includes lawn games, a fire pit, a full-service bar and several large TVs, making it a great place to catch a Thunder game during basketball season.

Think you’re a whiz at solving mysteries? Test your chops at The Escape OKC, a live-escape game where you have 60 minutes to solve the puzzles and mysteries of a locked room. The easiest game room has a 38 percent escape rate, so good luck. You’ll probably need it.

Plaza DISTRICT Sample some of the best craft beer in Oklahoma. Oak & Oar lives up to its slogan of “Craft Beer and Craft Fare” by keeping 36 always-rotating Oklahoma beers on tap. When combined with its selection of unique appetizers, salads and hearty knife-and-fork sandwiches, you’ve got a dining experience that can’t be beat. Try their take on Chicken Nachos, a dish that uses plantain, taro root and kettle potato chips as its base. Satisfy your sweet tooth. It doesn’t get much better than Roxy’s Ice Cream Social, a food truck turned permanent establishment that scoops up the best salted caramel ice cream

in existence (in our humble opinion). Roxy’s Ice Cream pairs nicely with the nearby Pie Junkie’s tasty options. Buy pie by the slice or get the whole thing – we won’t judge. Shop for the perfect OKC t-shirt and other only-in-OKC gifts. Check out the t-shirt selection at Tree & Leaf or the affordable art and locally-sourced clothing, accessories and gifts at DNA Galleries or Collected Thread. www.VisitOKC.com

If you’re the sort that likes to check out the hip and happening, you’ll find it in the Plaza District; an enclave of locally-owned shops, neighborhood bars, quirky galleries and fun-and-funky restaurants. Named for the historic Plaza Theater (built in 1935), the area has become a hub for creativity and a magnet for local businesses. Its namesake theater is now the nationally-renowned Lyric on the Plaza Theatre, where you can catch live performances in season.

Home to a number of shops specializing in all things western, you can outfit an entire ranch (cattle included) or just find a new pair of boots and enjoy a great steak in Stockyards City. Eat like a ranch hand at Cattlemen’s Steakhouse.

Find some proper cowboy duds.

The oldest continually-operating restaurant in Oklahoma City and a nationally-known Stockyards City staple, Cattlemen’s Steakhouse has been visited by presidents, movie stars, pro athletes and music icons, among others. It’s worth a visit for a delicious steak, some everpopular lamb fries and a thick slice of coconut cream pie. If you’re out and about early, they serve one of the hardiest (and best) breakfasts in town as well.

Explore the vast selection of boots, hats, pearl snaps and more at Langston’s Western Wear. There are also great boots and more at Little Joe’s Boots and custom hats at Shorty’s Caboy Hattery. Tap your toes to live music at the Rodeo Opry. If country music is your jam, then attend one of the shows at the Rodeo Opry along Exchange Avenue. This family-friendly venue serves up live tunes every Saturday night.

Western AVENUE From upscale to accessible, contemporary to antique, the Western Avenue district has a little bit of everything. From the local dives on Western avenue to the chic shops along Classen Curve, this district has you covered for shopping and eating.

Hunt for vintage and vinyl.

Some of OKC’s most fashionable shops are in the Classen Curve shopping area along Western Avenue between NW Grand Boulevard and Classen Boulevard. National retailers lululemon athletica, Anthropologie and West Elm.

If curated treasure hunting is more your style, visit one of Western Avenue’s many antique stores, like Antique Avenue. Western Avenue is also home to Guestroom Records, which sells new and old vinyl albums for your listening pleasure.

Shop local.

ICONIC OKC A full-fledged visit to OKC isn’t complete without a trip to these uniquely-OKC destinations.

Take a Trip Inside the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum If you’ve never been inside the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, or it has been years since your last visit, it’s definitely worth a stop. Last year the Memorial went through a $10 million renovation upgrading the museum with state-of-the-art technology, hands-on exhibits and new displays of artifacts. Detailed information on the investigation as well as the trails of evidence that were left behind are all a part of the new enhancements. Also added to the museum is a 40-foot glass overlook creating a seamless connection between the museum and the memorial outside.

You can also zip across the Oklahoma River and back again along the Sandridge Sky Zip, a 700-foot zip line.

Today it’s just a delicious OKC staple. Ask a local where to grab one and chances are they will tell you Tucker’s Onion Burgers. This Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers has won five divisional titles in the past decade and a conference title in 2008 and features some of baseball’s top young talent. A NIGHT (AND A DAY) ON THE TOWN By Greg Horton

We can talk about nightlife, but the truth is this city offers fun all day long. Ready to choose your own adventure? Whether you want to spend a day with your girlfriends, tour Oklahoma City’s excellent breweries or spend a romantic day together, OKC has adventures aplenty.

Saturday brunch has become one of the most popular meals in Oklahoma City, and a day with girlfriends can start with brunch in several areas of the city. For traditional and modern American, Packard’s New American Kitchen offers brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Located just one block off Automobile Alley, brunch at Packard’s puts you close to all of Bricktown, Midtown, Deep Deuce, Downtown and Uptown 23rd. If you are farther north, West on Western also has Saturday and Sunday brunch, as does La Baguette. These restaurants have excellent wine lists, as well as mimosas and bloody mary bars. La Baguette puts you close to Memorial Road, an area with dozens of shops, Quail Springs Mall, and Topgolf. West on Western is located just 10 minutes from downtown and 10 minutes from Memorial, a central location that gives you twice the options. After a mimosa brunch, hit the spa for pampering. Udånder downtown is one of Oklahoma City’s most elegant spas. If you plan your day right, you can brunch at Kitchen No. 324 and walk across the street to Udånder, which features a full range of spa services, including facials, massage, sauna and skin treatments. One of the best features about Udånder is the quiet elegance; even the atmosphere and décor are relaxing. Shopping districts are located all over Oklahoma City, but one of the local favorites is Blue Seven, a boutique that features men’s and women’s clothing, gifts and fun, wonderful surprises. Just north of La Baguette, it can be the first stop on a shopping expedition that takes you north to Memorial or south to Midtown or Plaza District, two more of the city’s best shopping districts.

If it’s dancing you’re after, the locals still swear by Groovy’s. Their mixture of rock, pop, hip-hop, country and R&B makes for an eclectic crowd and a wonderfully casual atmosphere. If it’s a quiet evening, hit Roxy’s in Plaza District for amazing ice cream or Pie Junkie in the same neighborhood, because good days end with dessert.

Beer Tour

Oklahoma City is home to a number of excellent breweries, and several of them offer brewery tours. Many of our local bars and pubs carry a great selection of local brews. You can start on either side of town and get a taxi or Uber across the city, if you don’t have a designated driver. If you start on Memorial on the north edge of the city, BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse offers an excellent selection of beers. No, they are not a local joint, but the locals love it. From there, head south to Plaza District. Oak & Ore features one of the city’s largest selections of local beers. The nononsense décor makes it possible to focus on what matters—the beer.

www.VisitOKC.com

Midtown shops include stationery, clothing, gifts and art. Hit Black Scintilla for women’s clothing, accessories, gifts and home décor, and then pop over to Automobile Alley for an amazing assortment of stuff you never knew you needed at Plenty Mercantile.

Before the big night of fun, hit the rooftop at Packard’s or O Bar (atop the Ambassador Hotel), both in Midtown, for excellent wine or cocktails. Both provide an excellent view of the city, but if you really want to check out the skyline, be a part of it by heading up to Vast on the 49th floor of the Devon Tower. For an alternate view, head downstairs to Flint, one of the city’s best patios, and check out the view from the base of the tower.

The building itself is remarkable, but so is the beer selection. TapWerks looks and feels like a pub. There is just something reassuring about brass and dark wood when it comes to picking a beer joint. Its menu is nearly as extensive as McNellie’s, and it definitely has more beers on tap, including those locals you need to be trying: Anthem, Black Mesa, COOP, Mustang and Roughtail, to name some of the local favorites.

Midtown is the next stop. McNellie’s Public House carries approximately 350 beers. Yes, 350, and dozens of those are on tap. The menu is broken down into countries and styles, making it easy to find favorites. Just a couple of miles from McNellie’s is Bricktown, an area of the city that contains our oldest beer mecca: TapWerks Ale House.

For the sporty couple, the Boathouse District offers a wide range of physical fitness options. A run through Myriad Gardens gives you an excellent view of the best part of Oklahoma City’s skyline, or if it’s a competition you want, Topgolf on Memorial is fun for experienced golfers and beginners.

At some point, you will want to hit up a brewery, and COOP opens its taproom every Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. for sampling and purchase, and the tours are at 2 and 4 p.m. COOP was one of the city’s first craft breweries, and it remains the handsdown favorite among locals. COOP is located about as far west as is possible to still be called Oklahoma City, but you can hit up another brewery on the way there or the way back. Mustang Brewing Company is located just off Interstate 40, making it super easy to get to. The taproom is open every Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. If you’re here at the right time — second Saturday of each month — you can catch the Craft Beer Block Party at Mustang.

Our largest arts district is The Paseo. Located in the center of Oklahoma City, this historic district has dozens of galleries that feature working artists. There is almost no limit to the variety of media you will find, and drinks and dining are available at Picasso Café or Paseo Grill.

www.VisitOKC.com

For late-night carousing, head over to Deep Deuce. WSKY and Slaughter’s Hall are located right next door to each other. One of the city’s best whiskey selections is available at WSKY—assuming you are ready to switch from beer—as is an excellent selection of cigars and a state-of-the-art air circulation system. If it’s still beer you want, step into Slaughter’s Hall and sample its selection of locals beers along with excellent pub food.

For the artsy couple, we have a number of museums and galleries, including the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. A traveling, rotating exhibit is always located on the first floor, and the collection of works by world-famous glass artist Dale Chihuly on the third floor is breathtaking. The museum puts you close to ballet, symphony, and Film Row, where you will find the IAO Gallery.

If you are staying closer to downtown, Ludivine is the choice for locals who consider themselves foodies. In fact, it isn’t just locals who love Ludivine; it has been featured in publications around the country. The menu rotates constantly, so check social media for the current menu. Its wine list is small but excellent, and the cocktails are some of the best in town. Bricktown is home to The Mantel, a fine dining restaurant with an ambience that is perfect for romantic date. The cuisine features the best seafood in Oklahoma City, and there are 50 wines by the glass. If you want Italian, head over to Stella in Midtown. It’s also a great date restaurant, featuring modern Italian cuisine and the largest list of Italian wines in the city. Cocktails to end the evening are better with a view, so go for Vast, Packard’s or O Bar. They take their cocktails seriously, and theirs are the best views in the downtown area.

The Criterion is owned by the same group that made the Wormy Dog Saloon a household name around the state. Originally a Stillwater club, the Wormy Dog in Bricktown hosts top regional talent just about every weekend. Oklahoma City is only a few hours north of Austin, so the roots, Americana, bluegrass and Red Dirt artists who make Austin such a musical mecca, make the trip up Interstate 35 regularly to play the Wormy Dog. One of the side benefits of the venue is that it’s a dance club as well, so feel free to two-step your way through the shows.

nightlife

Date night options abound in Oklahoma City. For wine lovers, head to The Metro Wine Bar & Bistro in Nichols Hills for one of the city’s best wine lists and a wonderful menu.

The Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma is actually a degree program through the university, but it is also an event center that features a wide range of artists. ACM@UCO, as it’s known, is actually in Bricktown, unlike the university, and it focuses on several different genres. The venue regularly hosts performers—including comedians—with regional and national profiles. As it is contemporary in focus, the artists tend to be across genres, so it’s possible to see jazz, rock, country, swing or just about any other style you can imagine.

If you are not ready for the evening to end, dance the rest of the night away at Groovy’s, or for the country and western lovers, Moonshiners Music House in Bricktown is an upscale country dance hall. Bricktown also has DollHouse Lounge & Burlesque, a grown-up dance club with full bar and regular shows.

Music Lovers

Finally, for the serious music fan, the Blue Door is Oklahoma City’s best venue for listeners—no crowd noise, cigarette smoke or nonsense allowed at Blue Door. There are shows nearly every week, and the list of bands and musicians features some of the best local, regional and national acts, especially in the genres of Americana, folk, roots and new grass. Since it doesn’t sell alcohol or food on the premises, you are free to bring your favorite bottle of wine or an ice chest full of beer to enjoy during the show.

www.VisitOKC.com

Oklahoma City is home to some iconic music venues, and while the music route has been through Tulsa in recent years, that is changing with the addition of outstanding new venues like The Criterion in east Bricktown. The 4,000-seat Criterion has adaptable seating to allow for smaller, more intimate shows, a state of the art sound system, and a full bar for concert-goers. A partnership with Live Nation means The Criterion draws the best local and regional acts, especially singer-songwriters, alternative rockers, bluegrass, and country artists.

Shopping by District

There’s so much great shopping in OKC that it’s best to tackle it one area at a time. In fact, shopping in OKC is best done by district to make sure you don’t miss anything! Look through the different areas and their offerings, then plan your attack. In these distinct, little areas throughout the city, you’ll find charming locally owned shops of all kinds, full of treasures to take home. And while this isn’t a complete list, it’s a great start to shopping throughout OKC’s districts.

Western Avenue This beautiful area along Western Avenue between NW 36th Street and Wilshire Avenue is full of one-of-akind shops. You’ll find plenty of quality and beautiful antiques, for which Western Avenue is well known. And, you’ll also discover other quaint finds from vintage LPs at Guestroom Records to fun and imported candies at 42nd Street Candy Co. Check out the home decor at The Wood Garden and Designer Rugs or the gifts, jewelry and accessories for him and her at Take Out Treasures. Kitchen and cooking finds can be found at Savory Spice and Culinary Kitchen. Nestled in the center of Western Avenue is Classen Curve and Nichols Hills Plaza, two shopping plazas featuring higher-end boutiques and fashions by exclusive designers. Balliet’s is Oklahoma City’s locally owned department store in Classen Curve, filled with two stories of women’s clothing, shoes, accessories, beauty products and even a spa. It has the big city fanciness with the warmth of local service.

Automobile Alley Once known as the home of OKC’s car dealerships, Automobile Alley is now a hopping gateway into downtown along Broadway Avenue from 13th Street. Explore specialty shops like Plenty Mercantile and hip clothing boutiques like Bow & Arrow. Find curated items for the home from all over the world at Sara Kate Studio and Urbane, or designer Western furnishings and fashion at Rawhide, the luxury ranch lifestyle store.

arts

Best of the Arts By Greg Horton

Oklahoma City’s art scene runs year round, so depending upon your preference, there are options in visual and performing arts every day. Most of the city’s arts options are located in or near downtown, making it very easy to access more than one choice.

Oklahoma City Ballet Oklahoma City Ballet’s season runs from October through April. The company boasts an international group of dancers, many trained in some of the best schools in the world. Artistic Director Robert Mills has a repertory that includes classical works like Giselle, Swan Lake, and Romeo and Juliet, as well as more contemporary masters like George Ballanchine and Twyla Tharp. For visitors from larger cities, the ticket prices will be a very pleasant surprise.

www.VisitOKC.com

The Oklahoma City Philharmonic

54

The Oklahoma City Philharmonic offers shows year round, and the season is a combination of classics, pops and discovery family series. Conductor Joel Levine oversees an outstanding collection of musicians, and world-renowned musicians and vocalists are

arts featured every season. Concerts are at the Civic Center Music Hall downtown, and the area has plenty of parking and easy access to some of the city’s best restaurants.

Oklahoma City Museum of Art

www.VisitOKC.com

Also in the downtown area is the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Visitors are greeted by a massive Dale Chihuly glass sculpture as they walk into the foyer, a not-so-subtle promise of what the third floor holds. The first floor is always occupied by a traveling, rotating exhibit that features classic and contemporary artists in a wide range of media. The second floor holds several rooms where selections from the OKCMOA’s permanent collection are displayed—everything from mixed media, to painting, to sculpture.

56

The third floor of the museum is home to a collection of Dale Chihuly glass exhibits. Ranging from the whimsical to the serious, Chihuly’s work is always remarkable, and the OKCMOA has done a wonderful job of staging the separate assemblages as a voyage of discovery.

Individual Artists of Oklahoma Less than a mile from the OKCMOA is the official gallery of the Individual Artists of Oklahoma (IAO), an organization that supports and features local artists from all over the state. The gallery is located in the Film Row district, close to plenty of food and entertainment. Exhibits rotate regularly, and the work on display comes from every conceivable genre, including film. A venue in the rear of the building regularly features poetry and music as well.

Oklahoma Contemporary At the corner of NW 11th Street and Broadway Avenue, Oklahoma Contemporary will soon have its permanent home, a $26 million arts campus. For now, the Showroom at Oklahoma Contemporary houses exhibitions, serves as an arts venue and curates the art library. Oklahoma Contemporary partners with Marfa Contemporary in Marfa, Texas, and the Green Box Arts Festival in Green Mountain Falls, Colorado, to feature some of the best regional and national artists.

CityRep

Exhibit C is one of downtown’s newest art galleries featuring handcrafted artwork by Chickasaw artists. Located in Bricktown, the gallery is a perfect combination of arts, Native American culture and hospitality, showcasing a new artist every few months. You can also buy authentic artisan works such as jewelry, pottery, paintings and clothing in its bright retail space.

Oklahoma City has several excellent theatre companies offering Broadway-style shows, as well as classic and contemporary plays and musicals. CityRep Theatre partners with Oklahoma City University and national and regional artists to offer a full slate of outstanding live performances. Many of the OCU students are well on their way to being the next Kristin Chenoweth or Megan Mullally, both OCU alumnae, meaning CityRep features some of the best young talent in the country.

The Paseo Arts District Anyone serious about the visual arts has to head over to The Paseo, Oklahoma City’s historic arts district. The area is home to more than 22 galleries that feature the work of approximately 80 artists. The first Friday of every month, all the galleries are open from 6 to 10 p.m. for the monthly Art Walk. The district has grown rapidly over the past several years, and that trend seems to be continuing. New restaurants are going in, and more shopping options are popping up, making The Paseo a destination in its own right.

Exhibit C

Lyric Theatre Lyric Theatre has performances in its home theater in the Plaza District, as well as a full season of bigger shows at Civic Center Music Hall. Lyric has established itself as a staging ground for shows that are being groomed for Broadway, and so its seasons often feature regional or national premieres.

FOOD TOUR By Dave Cathey and Staff

Every major city has its signature dishes and iconic eateries, and OKC is no different. But with so many options, the choices can be daunting. Sometimes it’s best to ask the experts; and in OKC, that means talking to Dave Cathey, food editor for The Oklahoman. Here are just a few of his suggestions for a local gastronomic tour of OKC

Bonjour

They didn’t invent food trucks in Oklahoma City, but they did make them cool. Big Truck Tacos has an army of followers crowd into the tiny HQ in Uptown 23rd and chase around two trucks regularly dispatched to events around the metro for gourmet taqueria fare.

When chef Vuong Nguyen left avant-garde Asian concept Guernsey Park in 2014 to open a breakfast and lunch concept, local diners were left scratching their heads. But when Bonjour opened in Chase Plaza in early 2015 it wasn’t long before lines led out the door for Nguyen’s precision French techniques expressed in classic made-fromscratch café fare.

Nic’s Grill

Café Kacao

Big Truck Tacos

Owner Justin “Nic” Nicholas has built an international reputation as one of the country’s burger kings by serving 19 years behind the griddle at his 17-seat Nic’s Grill. From “Diners, Drive-In and Dives” to French GQ magazine, all have lauded the hand-formed burgers grilled with precision and panache at Nic’s. Lines usually stretch around the corner, but the fact the line is always there is strong indication something special waits inside.

The Mule

The cornerstone of The Plaza District’s dining venues, The Mule is devoted to gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and a wide selection of cold beer. The Mule’s success has helped new Plaza concepts like Empire Slice House, Chiltepes and Oak and Ore find traction.

Breakfast Go-To’s Elemental Coffee Roasters

Coffee enthusiasts Laura and Laurent Massenat and friends first turned their passion for coffee into one of the city’s top roasteries before opening Elemental’s coffee shop in Midtown back in 2011. Now serving coffee from roaster to counter, Elemental offers a full breakfast menu overseen by Elena Farrar, who built her reputation at another local favorite, The Wedge Pizzeria. When Kitchen No. 324 opened in late 2013 the bar for downtown dining was immediately raised. With a coffee program, a fleet of house-baked breads and pastries, Kitchen 324 is among the city’s most popular breakfast stops, but added dinner service and an updated menu from chef Chris McCabe in 2014.

Long lines for breakfast are nothing new to Luidgi Del Cid and his family’s Café Kacao, which specializes in Guatemalan coffee and cuisine. Café Kacao serves its signature breakfast all day along with an expanded lunch menu. The only bad news: No dinner service – yet.

Drink and Dine Slaughter’s Hall

Slaughter’s Hall opened in December 2014 as a counterbalance to the owner’s group nearby upscale WSKY Lounge. Chef Jonathan Groth just joined the team to update the small-plate offerings at WSKY and elevate the soups, salads, sandwiches and appetizer offerings at Slaughter’s Hall. Located in legendary Deep Deuce, Slaughter’s Hall has started offering live music as well.

Bossa Nova Caipirinha Lounge

Looking for inspiration for her Bossa Nova Bar, owner Ana Davis traveled to her home country Brazil over the summer last year. Davis returned and closed the rooftop concept to renovate and rebrand into the Bossa Nova Caipirinha Lounge. The previously simple menu now boasts nine different versions of Brazil’s national cocktail, the Caipirinha and 50 extra seats.

The R&J Lounge and Supper Club

Chef/owners Russ Johnson and Jonathon Stranger built a national reputation with five-year-old, farm-to-table Ludivine, but last year jumped in the Wayback Machine to conjure the R&J Lounge and Supper Club. Channeling the early 1960s Great American Supper Club, the R&J serves umbrellaadorned cocktails in Tiki mugs, champagne on tap and a menu Betty Draper would be proud to serve.

Mahogany Prime Steakhouse

Hal Smith Group’s most ambitious concept Mahogany Prime Steakhouse opened its second location in downtown Oklahoma City in 2015. The new space is nearly four times larger than the original with far more ostentatious ambiance. Instead of low-lit, quiet intimate dining, the new place features a dining-room long banquette, halfmoon booths, numerous private dining options and an enormous bar.

Jamil’s

Greg Gawey took over operations of his uncle’s iconic Lebanese steakhouse back in the late 1960s. It’s the city last remaining restaurant of its kind with Lebanese mezzes mixed with smoked bologna and smoked ribs served ahead of TopChoice steaks, seafood and chops. Located in an old home with a long, bawdy history, Jamil’s has anchored the north end of the Capitol complex along Lincoln Boulevard for more than 50 years.

Cattlemen’s Steakhouse

The city’s oldest restaurant has been through a renaissance or two, the last in 1982 when Dick Stubbs and David Egan took over the day-today of then Cattlemen’s Café. Now Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, the cuisine has changed very little over the years other than to add to the arsenal of steaks. Breakfast is still served daily, the salad dressing recipe remains top secret, and lamb fries continue to be among Cattlemen’s bestsellers. Cattlemen’s now has a strong wine list and nationwide following.

Fine Dining Vast

Junior’s

When Junior Simon opened his swank restaurant and club in the basement of the Oil Building in 1973, the sky was the limit. Forty-three years, two major oil downturns and the death of its founder haven’t stopped Junior’s. Owner Jim Shumsky, a longtime regular, maintains the same Don Draperfriendly ambience and classic supper club cuisine.

The Metro Wine Bar and Bistro

Owners Chris and LaVeryl Lower opened 28 years ago and have a following that ranks among the city’s most loyal. With one of the state’s best wine lists, The Metro’s upscale fare draws inspiration from around the globe while adhering to French sensibilities.

Asian Tour Pho Lien Hoa

Since 2000, Pho Lien Hoa has set the standard for Oklahoma City’s competitive pho market. Though the Asian district has grown leaps and bounds since Lien Le took over Pho Lien Hoa, her cashonly operation still boasts the longest lines thanks to a variety of noodles and rich broths in which to serve them.

Grand House Asian Bistro

Owners Cathy and Thai Tien are among the Asian district’s pioneers. They opened in a tiny building across the street from the current home of Grand House Asian Bistro – a large, well-appointed space adorned with blown glass, featuring live jazz on Fridays and Dim Sum service Sundays, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Szechuan Bistro

The family-owned Szechuan Bistro represents the reach of influence from the city’s Asian District. The restaurant kicked the buffet habit for a menu boasting as much traditional Chinese cuisine as it does Americanized classics. Owners Yuan Ren and Xiu Mie Chen have taken an old Burger King and turned it into a modern Asian bistro

www.VisitOKC.com

Nearly 50 stories above downtown near the top of the Devon Tower, Vast offers artfully crafted continental cuisine and a view that stretches for miles. Since chef Kurt Fleischfresser took the reins at the city’s loftiest restaurant, Vast has begun to hit all the high notes for fine dining: menu, service and atmosphere. Chef de cuisine Patrick Williams welcomed the addition of sous chef Kevin Lee,

and together they’ve taken Vast to new heights. Private dining options abound with a menu drawing inspiration as broad as the view.

Not just any steak

Since

Hungry for steak? Cattlemen’s Steakhouse has been recognized by Gourmet Magazine, Southern Living and Bon Appetit. We’ve also been featured on the hit television shows Man Vs. Food and Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Cattlemen’s has won the Best Steakhouse Award by The Oklahoman and the Oklahoma Gazette every year for nearly two decades. Even the President dropped in for a great steak. But the best proof of just how great our steak is – is to come taste for yourself.

European Tour La Baguette

Michel Buthion and his brother chef Alain’s lofty reputation was built on pushing gustatory boundaries in casual, fun environment bolstered by an artisan market that includes a small army of take-away desserts and gourmet foods.

Pizzeria Gusto

Uptown 23rd’s most dynamic restaurant duo, Chris Lower and chef Kathryn Mathis, has struck street foods for inspiration again with Pizzeria Gusto. Unlike previous concepts, Gusto is full service with a full bar. Dough is made daily and baked in a 900-degree wood-fired oven, resulting in crisp Neapolitan-style pizza. Craft cocktails and small plates round out the offerings.

Stella Modern Italian

Owner Lori Tyler opened Stella in 2010, converting an old gas station into one of the city’s most beautiful restaurants. Chef Melissa Aust oversees the upscale, food-forward menu, which is served in a casual, elegant setting bathed in natural light muted by curtains made of Italian fabric by day and set aglow by Venetian glass fixtures by night. At the granite-top bar, you can choose from 73 bottles of wine and 23 by the glass.

Seafood and More The Drake

Since 1984, Paul Seikel has been Oklahoma City’s pre-eminent purveyor of Cajun-style seafood. With Pearl’s Oyster Bar near Nichols Hills and Crabtown in Bricktown, Seikel has diners covered from from a Big Ol’ Bowl of Beans and Rice to a crab boil flung on the table. Both places offer a broad menu, but the specialties of the house come from the sea.

Rococo Restaurant and Fine Wine

Chef/owner Bruce Rinehart came to Oklahoma City to open his dream restaurant back in 2004, an homage to his East Coast roots with plenty of inspiration from his travels along the Pacific Coast. The city’s most popular crab cake is a signature, but the menu offers plenty of pasta, steaks and fresh seafood. With two locations, the Northpark store boasts one of the city’s most bountiful brunches.

Ludivine

Chef/owners Jonathon Stranger and Russ Johnson just celebrated their fifth year, which has been a succession of accolades from various national gourmet magazines for its style and grace while adhering to farm-to-table principles. The menu changes each week, drawing almost exclusively from the season’s bounty. Ludivine also has a full bar that follows the same credo.

Museum Café

Chefs Henry Boudreaux and Ahmed Farnia oversee the restaurant attached to Oklahoma City’s Museum of Art and offer foods meant to live up to the venue’s devotion to beauty and creativity. The menu hits all the high notes with steaks, chops and fresh seafood that draws harmony from global influences.

www.VisitOKC.com

A Good Egg Dining Group started populating Oklahoma City with top-notch concepts since opening Cheever’s Café 15 years ago. Red Prime Steakhouse, Iron Star Urban Barbecue, Republic Gastropub, Tucker’s Onion Burgers and Kitchen No. 324 followed but the latest installation, The Drake Seafood and Oysterette, is its most ambitious yet. Featuring oysters from both coasts and fresh seafood daily, The Drake offers upscale fare in casual environs.
