Drift N’ Dine

“My all time favorite thing to do with my family is spend the day on the St. Croix River. With kids, that may sound daunting—what do we need to pack? What will we eat? Osceola makes it easy to have an outdoor family adventure. We just throw a couple towels, sunscreen, and life jackets in a bag, and we’re ready to go. Family day on the river for us begins picking up supplies at the Cascade BP Deli with special treats and some made-to-order sandwiches for our river picnic. Another great place to pick up lunch is Dick’s Fresh Market, which has a brand new deli-case filled with ready-made foods and Caribou Coffee! We have our own boat, so we launch at the Osceola Landing. It’s nice taking our time boating down the river and enjoying the beautiful scenery and nature. Sometimes we fish or swim. We have our picnic lunch at an open camp site or on a sandbar along the river. When we are looking for something fun to do, the river is easy and inexpensive. Everyone has fun! My husband and I enjoy our time outside, the relaxation the river provides, sunshine—a stress-free day. My kids love that there is no destination—we just go.”

DAY ON THE RIVER

Packing Checklist

“One of our favorite summer/fall activities to do is gather friends for a “Drift and Dine!” I create a simple, yet elegant dinner and bring it on the pontoon near sunset. I set the table with local wild flowers, wine glasses, and china. Everyone helps carry the provisions to the pontoon. Then, we cast off and motor downstream past the Osceola Landing. We turn off the engine and just drift, enjoying the majestic cliffs, soaring birds, sounds of splashing water, and conversation. All the while sipping on wine and eating a delicious meal. We marvel at the setting sun and drift a bit further before motoring back upstream. We all live such busy lives, it’s great to relax and drift. It makes for a perfect evening on the St. Croix River!” By Mary Norenberg, Grow Osceola Volunteer

RIVER ITINERARY

#3

“Growing up in the area, I have always had a love for nature and the great outdoors. As a teen, I enjoyed hiking and rock climbing along the St. Croix River. As the years have gone by, I have transitioned to kayaking or canoeing whenever possible, either solo or with family and friends or with my dog, Izzy, who I adore. Having my own kayak gives me a great excuse to get out on the river and unwind from a busy day at work. Riverwood Canoe and Kayak Rental makes it easy if you have a group of people. They can accommodate multiple drop off/pick up times. Before launching, I grab breakfast at Osceola Lanes and stock up my cooler with items from Valley Spirits. When I’ve worked up an appetite after several fun hours on the river, I like to eat at PY’s Saloon & Grill for the best veggie burger and homemade fries in town. Sitting outside on their back patio, overlooking the Falls, is a great way to end the day.”

Company Paddle #4

RIVER ITINERARY

southbound down the river in canoes, kayaks, or on stand-up paddle-boards. The St. Croix is a wide, open, strong, and beautiful river that provides different options for different abilities and ages. Some people just float and enjoy the beauty. Others like to put their heads down and paddle. Employees and their families have an opportunity to sample the paddles we make, relax, and enjoy the river before arriving at the Osceola Landing. Some end the trip there and head to Osceola’s restaurants and bars. Others continue on down the river and stop in Somerset or Marine on St. Croix. Time on the St. Croix River is always a great company experience and is enjoyed by all.”

“Every August, 30-40 employees from Bending Branches, and their families, head down the St. Croix River with the help of Riverwood Canoe and Kayak Rental. First, we have a company picnic in the Wisconsin side of Interstate Park, then folks embark

Frank says “I sew hundreds of alterations every week, zippers and even bean bags for the teams around here” Although you couldn’t tell with his warm smile, Frank is 76 years young. When asked what keeps him and his business going he says...

“To me, it’s more about the people. That’s what makes staying in business worthwhile.” 7

The Vitality of Volunteering Volunteer

Shirley Johnson, one of our beloved volunteers, received the Volunteer of the Year award in 2016 and the Main Street Volunteer of the Year award in 2017, shares her experiences. Shirley writes... “For most of my life, volunteering has been a way of life. As I was growing up, doing volunteer work was often our family look-forward-to weekend activity. The reward was how we felt afterwards, as we drove home smiling and recounting what had been fixed, improved and accomplished. One of the amazing features of volunteering is meeting a variety of people. I, too, experience what researchers call the “helpers high” or the sense of well-being after volunteering because it fosters a greater purpose in my life. I believe it is so important for the next generation to get engaged with volunteering. Right now, working in the GROW Osceola Flower program and raising money for the Trails Coalition by planning the Valley Brew Fest are my passion projects. Contributing to my community is where I want to volunteer my time.“

“Osceola has one of the highest rates of volunteerism among small towns in Wisconsin. We believe this is how we cultivate our thriving community.”

Shop and Stroll Charming and independent shops, lots of local handcrafted items, cozy restaurants, outdoor patios, plenty of free parking are all within walking distance. Osceola is a quaint, small town surrounded with waterfalls, bluffs, a creek and walking trails that are all accessible right from historic downtown. Because the people who own and work in our downtown are every bit as unique and interesting as what they sell, you’ll discover a small town adventure all of its own. In fact, many Osceola merchants and artisans personally create or source the handcrafted items and often have an interesting story to share or a tale to tell about the history of our town.

LOCAL ARTIST - Bitten birch bark is an ancient native art form. The elder women of the Woodland Nations created this traditional art by biting the birch with their teeth while socializing around the campfire. The designs were often used for bead or quillwork. Robyn Foster says it is a privilege to be one of the few people who continue to particpate in this beautiful artform. Robyn’s bitten bark framed artwork and jewelry can be found at Uptown Gifts.

WORK WHERE YOU LIVE AND PLAY

Putting Down Roots...

Amy Brain

AMY BRAIN,

LINDA SHOBER,

As a kid, Amy traveled all over the world with her family, and lived in England for over 13 years. Osceola was their vacation spot each year. After she married her husband, they decided to move to Osceola because of the quality schools and they were able to find good jobs. Amy says, “what surprised me was that people were really welcoming to us as outsiders”.

When we were first married, we moved around quite a bit. We wanted a place we could connect with community and nature and raise our future children. After being inspired by a hiking day trip in the fall to the area, we moved. We found and fell in love with the natural beauty, the small town feel, and the availability of outdoor recreational activities, such as hiking, biking, and kayaking in the Osceola area. And yet it’s still so close to a major metropolitan area. In 2018, we built our forever home in Dresser, WI.

CUSTOMER DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE LEAD AT NORTHWIRE, INC.

BUSINESS OWNER OF SHOBER MARKETING & DESIGN, AND INSTRUCTOR AT WILD RIVER FITNESS

Now, almost 20 years later, with a home in the country and two kids, Osceola is where they plan to stay. On weekends, they enjoy Pokeman Go (there’s a lot around here), their extended family get togethers and walking. Amy goes on to say,” living in a small town is so easy-- to get to work- a short drive, the gym, the doctor, the dentist-it’s all right here. The company we work at, Northwire, is a big company and global, but everybody still knows each other- it’s like family”.

“What surprised me was that people were really welcoming to us”

GREAT

Schools & KIDS

Our Kids Come First... THE OSCEOLA SCHOOL SYSTEM is a community of excellence and well known for quality education. The students are provided with numerous opportunities to be challenged as they learn and grow. While Osceola Schools have a long tradition of excellence in academics as well as extracurricular, the pride and support from our community is what keeps us strong. All Osceola schools are fully accredited and staffed with warm, professional teachers and support staff whose primary mission is the comprehensive education of every school age child. So many fantastic programs come out of our schools.

“Why Wait” is particularly new and promising. The premise of “WHY WAIT?” provides high school students the opportunity to analyze and study a topic they are passionate about. Advisors Amanda Wicklund and Peg Medcraft started “Why Wait?” as a program for students interested in making a concrete impact in the world in ways that interest them right now. They create projects that solve a problem related to their chosen topic and volunteer their time and effort in the community.
