Nature Holiday in P채rnu County

PÄRNU COUNTY – CLEAN AND PURE! The charm of Pärnu – green parks, immense sea, beautiful beach and clean air – is magnified by wild beaches, silent, extensive bogs and ancient forests. But it is already in the city that you meet the nature. The sandy beach of Pärnu is surrounded by coastal meadows and reed-beds, starting within the borders of the city and continuing beyond. The nature reserve of Pärnu coastal meadow situated on the shores of Vana-Pärnu and Raeküla is home for many different and rare species. You will find a number of plants subject to nature protection here – fen orchid, sea coast angelica, soft horn wort, crow garlic, lesser butterfly-orchid and several other orchids. There is a wonderful view to the Pärnu river mouth, to the northern part of Pärnu bay and to the seaside pasture from the bird watching tower in Vana Pärnu. There are over 100 different bird species here at different times of the year. The bird life is especially rich from April to October, May and June being the highpoint. During the migration-period you will meet mute swan, whooper swan, bean goose, greater whitefronted goose, barnacle goose, ducks, cormorants, white-tailed eagle and marsh-harrier here. The city people and tourists find more and more often their way to the walking paths along the beach, where highland cattle is feeding on the crass of the seaside pastures. Outside the city the Pärnu county´s sun journeys are taking us to discover the ancient nature and show us how to live in harmony with it. Here the sea meets the land, the bogs meet the ancient forests and rivers rich with fish. The four different seasons of the year with the additional fifth season of the Soomaa floods presenting the primitive power of Pärnu river, make it all even more exciting. The peace and quiet of Pärnu balance the everyday rush helping you to recover from modern life turmoil. Take a deep breath of sea and pine tree air, fill your lungs with fresh scents of bogs and let the nature restore your strength. How you look at nature will change after a fishing trip on the sea with a local fisherman or after tracking down the wild life in the bog with a local hunter. Pärnu offers a huge list of activities all the year round – kick sledging, sleigh riding, skiing or ice yachting in winter, bog walking, surfing, riding and fishing in autumn or spring and pleasures of beach life, biking and sailing in summer. There are 242 kilometres of coastline, 177 islands and islets in Pärnu County which make a great nesting place for thousands of birds.

The track is marked with wooden signs indicating how much distance you have covered in metres, and it is open to Nordic walkers, rollerskaters, and walkers year-round. BIRDWATCHING The Vana-Pärnu Birdwatching Tower is located between the river and the sea, next to the pier on the left bank of Pärnu River. The tower is ideal for watching birds moving in the thicket of reeds on the beach, the nearby meadow, and over the sea. GREEN RIVER LAND The trails of the Green River Land are connected to the Pärnu River. The heart of the River Land is Soomaa, where we miraculously have a fifth season – the season of floods. The kingdom of bogs Soomaa with its 5 bogs can be called a bog kingdom. The greatest of those five is the Kuresoo bog with its 10 000 hectare of land. The importance of the area is confirmed by the fact that Soomaa is a member of PAN Parks Network connecting the 11 most important and best nature reserve parks which have combined the preserving of the wilderness and sustainable tourism development. Birthplace of log boats This is the birth place of log boats. To sail down the river on that little boat is a special experience. During the floods you can sail in the forest, above the roads and the meadows. This is also the time where the log boats are the only way for the locals to get home. Into the nature by bog shoes, kick sledges or dog sleds The wooden paths placed all over the Soomaa invite you to discover its peculiar and immense nature. The knee high pine tree of the bog can actually be a century old. As a bonus you will have the particularly fresh air of the bog for a companion. While on the hiking trail we suggest you reach out your hand and pick up a vitamin bomb – the red cranberry. If in luck you might catch a glimpse of willow grouse and golden eagle, both under protection. Bogs are the castles of peace and quiet where you can leave the turmoil of every day life behind. On bog shoes you can reach places far from wooden paths, between the mysterious small lakes in the bog. Bog shoes are practical in many ways – the person walking on them won´t sink and the vegetation of the bog won´t be destroyed. Bog shoeing can be compared to hiking and is therefore suited for the most of the people. In winter you will have a lot of fun on kick sledge tours on the frozen rivers or cross skiing through the frozen landscape of bogs. The oldest horse farm in Tori invites you to discover the local nature on horse back or by riding in the horse sleigh. Instead of horse sleigh you can also use dog sled where the good-spirited Alaska malamutes and huskies take you for a fast ride on snow covered roads.

THE LAND BY THE BLUE SEA The long coastline of Pärnu gives you the opportunity to admire the wide blue sea stretching endlessly beyond the horizon. In winter the powerful winds push the huge piles of ice on to the shore and the sun shining back from the white glittering snow is blinding your eyes. Wild sandy beaches, junipers and thousands of birds To the north of Pärnu by the coastline there are several beautiful paths to take a walk on. The wild sandy beaches of Valgerand and Matsirand are treasures worth discovering, offering a refuge for those longing after silence. The view from lighthouses and observation towers over the sandy beaches and juniper fields on the coast is breath taking. Estonia is a world famous bird watching area thanks to the migrating birds who land here on the coastal meadows and islets on their way to and from the Arctic. The observation towers are placed conveniently all along the coastline of Pärnu County. Let the fisherman take you to the sea The islands, islets and the long coast line of Pärnu has made it necessary for locals to learn to co-exist with the sea. Sea has always been an essential food provider. For example in Kihnu Island there is always freshly smoked fish and home baked bread on the table. You can also get a sense of fishing life at the fishing villages by the coast. To have a fisherman take you to the sea is an unique experience. If you are in luck the sea trout will take a bite, but fishes like zander, perch, northern pike, common roach or crucian carp make also a good catch. For Kihnu people the fishing is all the year round activity starting with net fishing in April. From July to September the main technique is angling. In October it is time for special kind of nets and fishing goes on all through the winter until the ice breaks again in spring. If you simply wish to enjoy the sea, then go for a sail in a boat or kayak. Seals Sangelaiud with its many islets, located north-west of Kihnu has become a favourite resting place for ringed seal and grey seal. Especially the ringed seal is fond of the place coming here in winter to take a rest on the ice floe and to give birth to their pups. In spring it sheds its fur here. Sangelaid is the biggest gathering area for the ringed seal in Baltic Sea during the April and May. Since there are so many of them, the local Kihnu men (fishermen) and the seals are not the best friends. The seals get stuck in fishing nets, ending thus on the dinner table in Kihnu.

Species-rich wooded meadows Heading for the mainland you will reach the prehistoric land by the sea – Terra Maritima, stretching all the way from Pärnu to Lihula. Although the sea has given way to the land, the nature is still offering some exciting compilations - wooded meadows side by side with bogs and grass land under the junipers. Nedrema is the second biggest wooded meadow in Europe. It is situated in between two bogs and is rich of species. You can find beautiful orchids, great burnets and butter worts here. There is a special trail down the coast for the romantics, The Romantic Coastline (www.rannatee.ee/frontpage)
