EAT & DRINK

“Penticton & Wine Country is a wine and food-lovers delight!”

Penticton is the heart of wine country in the Okanagan. The wine industry continues to flourish and grow as each spring new cellar doors open to welcome thirsty visitors. Relaxed and friendly – with an intense passion for the valley, the art of grape farming and wine making is the common thread you will find when touring. Each winery offers a distinctive flavour and experience being born from location and the people at the helm. Using Penticton as your home base, when wine touring, gives you plenty of options. North along the east side of Okanagan Lake you will find the Naramata Bench, home to more than 30 wineries as well as two distilleries. On the west side a few minutes to the north you will be in Summerland, home to Bottleneck Drive Wineries. Meander a bit to the south to visit the wineries of Okanagan Falls. A little further south will bring you to the Oliver/ Osoyoos area, and about 45 minutes to the west along Highway 3A you will find yourself in the Similkameen Valley. Doing a self-guided wine tour is easy enough; the team at the Wine Country Visitor Centre will be happy to provide you with

OFFICIAL 2016 EXPERIENCES GUIDE | VISITPENTICTON.COM

maps that list locations as well as directions and suggestions. If you’d prefer someone else do the driving, a guided winery tour is a great option and there are several companies that specialize in this, with most offering the option of either a half-day or full-day tour. Touring with a guide will provide a narrative of the area and its offerings in a comfortable, climate controlled vehicle. Your reservation will typically include tasting fees and some tour operators will also offer lunch on a winery patio or a picnic in a vineyard. To add that extra something to your experience you might like to choose a tour that includes a stop at one of the local distilleries or craft breweries. For a completely different experience why not book a “Wine & Kayak” tour.Your day will begin on the beach of Okanagan Lake from where you will paddle over to 3 Mile Beach in Naramata. From there you will be transported, by vehicle, to visit several wineries. For the artistically inclined there are painting classes held in the vineyard combined with wine touring – the choices are many.

Tip: When wine touring refrain from wearing any perfume, cologne or lip-gloss. This way you are able to focus on the subtle nuances of the wine.

T ip: When visiting wineries ask them about vineyard location and how the terrior has affected the wine in your glass. FROM FARM TO TABLE

TERRIOR (PRONOUNCED TER´WÄR) Terroir is one of those tongue twister words that you will hear often while in the Okanagan Valley. The literal French translation is “land or soil” but the actual definition is “the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate”. Where something is grown will have an impact on the final product – it might be the consistency of the soil, the climate or weather, the elevation and slope of the land or a combination of all of these things. The Okanagan Valley stretches 250 kilometers and is dotted with unique micro-climates that create the perfect growing conditions for grapes. The soil in much of the central part of the Valley is a little more “gravely” and to the south it becomes more sandy or silty. It has taken a few years of experimenting, by many pioneers in the industry, to understand what grows well and where and their efforts have certainly paid off. There are 75 plus wine varietals now grown in British Columbia in some 9,800 acres of vineyard. Pinot Gris & Merlot have the most acreage but you have lots of other choices to sample. From luscious Chardonnays to crisp Riesling; fruity Pinot Noir to full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon as well as other less known varietals, such as Zweigelt and Viognier (another couple of tongue twisters that you will undoubtedly come across on your travels). Grapes love growing in the Okanagan and wine makers from across the world are being lured to the region to become a part of this exciting industry as it continues to grow.

Good wine and good food goes hand in hand and the Okanagan Valley yields an abundance of fresh produce which will leave any professional chef or amateur cook spoilt for choice. Every Saturday from May until October you will find hundreds of foodies down at the Penticton Farmer’s Market, on Main Street, filling shopping baskets with nature’s finest. Many of the local eateries take advantage of the availability of fresh local produce and menus tend to evolve with the seasons. In the winter months heartwarming soups and stews crammed full of earthy root vegetables are just the ticket while the summertime offers succulent salads and ripe juicy fruits. If you’re interested in developing your culinary skills there are many classes available to the budding chef or the experienced home cook; from food and wine pairing to baking and charcuterie. Once back home your dinner parties will be the talk of the town.

PEACH CITY PICS • Relaxing with a picnic in a local vineyard or a shady park • Choosing a beautiful bouquet of flowers at the Farmer’s Market • Chilling with a cold one at one of our local craft breweries • Sniffing, Swirling and Sipping at a local winery • Eating, eating and eating some more!

T ip: When visiting the Okanagan be certain to stop at one of the many fruit stands. They host an amazing variety of whatever is currently in season.

WINE COUNTRY The Okanagan Valley is ranked in the top three best wine regions to visit in the world. The pioneers that planted some of the first vines in the valley marvel at how far the industry has come and the quality of wine being produced. Each spring celebrate with us at the annual Spring Wine Festival, then do it all again in fall as we take a moment, during harvest time, to enjoy the fruits of our labour.

THE NARAMATA BENCH www.naramatabench.com A 13 kilometer stretch offering breathtaking views of sparkling blue lake, orchards and vineyard. The Bench is home to 30 plus wineries as well as two micro-distilleries. You will also find numerous art studios and lots of places to capture special moments on camera. Two creameries that produce artisan cheese, road side fruit stands and lovely outdoor patios. At a couple of

wineries you are able to bring your own picnic lunch to enjoy with a bottle of their finest. There might be live music or beautiful, serene peace.Visit a winery that also hosts a restaurant for lunch or dinner for a wine country culinary experience.

SUMMERLAND’S BOTTLENECK DRIVE www.bottleneckdrive.com In Summerland the hills are alive with the gentle humming of a tractor working in the vineyard and the chatter of a vineyard crew. The whistle of the Kettle Valley Steam Train echoes in the distance and laughter is heard, as visitors relax on winery patios while enjoying live music with a little something in their glass. It is an idyllic area, currently with 16 wineries and two cideries. Main Street in Summerland is great for a stroll with a new gourmet “wienery”, a great bakery and some cute shops for browsing.

OKANAGAN FALLS WINERIES www.ofwa.ca Okanagan Falls oozes rural charm, from the antique stores brimming with collectable knick-knacks to the locally renowned, family-owned ice cream store on the edge of town. But don’t let the old-world feel of this small suburb fool you; it is also home to some valley’s most sophisticated wineries and bistros. From the shores of Skaha Lake to the tip of Vaseux Lake, you’ll find a string of small wineries with big hearts crafting big wines! The area is also a delightful spot for bird watching, wildlife viewing and nature study.

T ip: Don’t try to see it all and taste it all in one day. Take your time and immerse your senses in all the Okanagan offers.

SAY CHEESE!

You will find that many of our wineries also play host to culinary masters to tempt your taste buds with menus inspired by local goods. Relax on a sun drenched patio enveloped by the heady scent of fruit filled vines and orchards. Nothing goes with a fine wine better than a tangy, flavourful cheese and on the road to Naramata you will find two creameries – Poplar Grove and Upper Bench, both of which lovingly produce hand-crafted artisan cheeses. Pack up your picnic basket with a crusty loaf, a bottle of chilled vino and a pick up a rich Tiger Blue or buttery U & Brie.

The Fitzpatricks are transforming their historic Greata Ranch Vineyards into a Sparkling Wine house. FRUITS & BLOSSOMS

Alongside the acres of grape vines in the Okanagan Valley are acres of luscious orchards. The roadside from Summerland to Oliver is dotted with dozens of fresh fruit and vegetable stands and a few of the farmers are happy to invite you in to pick-your-own produce. Get in touch with Mother Nature as you pluck plump edibles from her bountiful boughs. This abundance of fresh fruit can only lead to one thing – delicious desserts. When dining in Penticton make sure to leave room to indulge in a local sweet treat. There is no better finish to a fine meal than some home-made fruit pie with a big scoop of ice-cream. On those hot summer evenings, why not take a drive out to one of the local ice-cream shops, where kids and adults alike will be salivating over many scrumptious flavours to choose from. Look out for specialty concoctions infused with local wine and beer.

EAT & DRINK

CRAFT BREWING The Okanagan Valley is well known for its selection of world class wines, but a growing number of budding beer enthusiasts are also being drawn to the area. 2016 marks the 21st anniversary of the Okanagan Fest of Ale, one of the largest and longest standing beer festivals in the Pacific Northwest, bringing together beer lovers and brewers to celebrate the almighty ale! Oktoberfest is another great “All Hail to Ale” event that takes place every year and gives locals and visitors the chance to raise a stein and sing along with the Oom-Pah band! The event was ranked, by Huffington Post, as the second best Oktoberfest in Canada. As the saying goes “It takes a lot of good beer to make great wine”, so it is no surprise that microbreweries are a growing trend in Penticton. You currently have a fab four to choose from. Bad Tattoo Brewing Company - Grab a “growler” of their Los Muertos Cerveza 12

Negra, a luscious and rich dark ale or stay and enjoy a delicious pizza straight from the stone oven. Cannery Brewing - Whet your whistle with a Blackberry Porter or Anarchist Amber Ale at this well-established brewery, which produces individually crafted fine ales and lagers of unmistakable complexity and balance. Stay a while and enjoy a lite bite indoors or on the patio, and for a bit of inside scoop on the art of beer making, book a tour. Patt, one of the owners, has such passion and knowledge you will have a fun, educational experience. Tin Whistle Brewing Company – Drop by and sample their Killer Bee Dark Honey Ale along with their fabulous seasonal brews. They brew it, they drink it, they sell what’s left! Barley Mill Brew Pub – Relax in the warmth and intimacy of this traditional pub while supping a pint or two of their award winning handcrafted ales & lagers.

OFFICIAL 2016 EXPERIENCES GUIDE | VISITPENTICTON.COM

T ip: Take some “beer to go” and grab a refillable growler. SOMETHING FRUITY IS GOING ON What better homage to the abundant orchards in the valley than the creation of delectable dessert wines. Elephant Island Orchard Wines and Sleeping Giant Fruit Winery offer an intoxicating variety of liquid refreshments, flavoured with cherries, apricots, raspberries, pears and other local fruits. Celebrate the awesome bounty of the Okanagan apple orchards with a sample of delicious cider. The Summer-

land Heritage Cider Company’s all-juice cider is made using European cider apple varieties that they grow themselves in their own orchards. The Naramata Cider Company also prides itself on quality concoctions made from 100% locally grown fruit, a little Okanagan sunshine and a lot of hard work. All you have to do is grab yourself a cider glass and “rest easy”.

T ip: Different fruits are in season at different time the year. Be sure to check out the blossom and harvest dates, although weather will have an impact on what is ready when. SHAKEN OR STIRRED As the age of cocktailing returns in all its opulent glory Penticton & Wine Country is right on cue. Taking advantage of the regions natural produce, distillers have integrated local fruits, herbs and botanicals to create a range of spirits including: gin, vodka, brandy and liqueurs.

Maple Leaf Spirits Inc - In 2005 Jorg Engel and his wife Anette formed this distillery that was founded on the tradition of Jorg’s Southern German ancestors. They have been internationally recognized for producing award winning artisan spirits from 100% BC fruit and grapes. Don’t leave without sampling their mouth-watering Maple Liqueur. Old Order Distilling - A craft distillery whose heritage dates back over seven generations of pioneering Mennonite farmers. Their decision to open a “farm to glass” craft distillery in the heart of the city rather than on the farm, was a conscious one, in order to preserve as much of the disappearing agricultural farming land as possible for future generations. The fruit and grains distilled at Old Order are grown exclusively on BC farms. Their Heritage Vodka is triple distilled in their German handcrafted alembic copper pot still.

Legend Distilling – This artisanal distillery is producing premium vodka as well as gin that has been infused with locally foraged botanicals, herbs and fruit – it is just what the “doctor ordered”. Or try their Blasted Brew over a bit of ice. Stay a while and enjoy a hand-crafted cocktail in the lounge or on the patio. Okanagan Crush Pad – In their constant pursuit of innovation this Summerland based winery added a line of wine and grape-based spirits under their Narrative label in 2015. Along with a wide range of award winning wines you will now be able to sample their very refined vodka or vibrant craft gin.

Tip: Many of the local tour operators now offer itineraries which include breweries and spirits alongside wineries.

FAMILY & FUN

“A place for sharing special moments and making treasured memories.”

Penticton is the perfect setting for a family vacation. It lies nestled between two lakes, with long stretches of sandy beach and a river channel connecting the two bodies of water as well as lots of green space offering somewhere shady, to get out of the sun. Get set to make some wonderful memories and enjoy one of the best vacations, ever.

SUN & SAND To the north of the city is Lake Okanagan offering over a kilometre of beach with a walkway running alongside, perfect for an early morning or later afternoon stroll. Here you will find the “Wibit” park – a bouncy bit of water fun with obstacles suitable for ages 5 and up. For the older kids and adults there are a couple of places where you can rent sea-doos or book a parasailing or banana boat adventure. Okanagan Lake is also home to the SS Sicamous. Now a museum, this famed stern-wheeler, was once a luxury class passenger vessel that was used to transport passengers and cargo to remote communities along the shores of the lake. 26

OFFICIAL 2016 EXPERIENCES GUIDE | VISITPENTICTON.COM

You will be swept back in time, wandering the decks of this iconic monument of Penticton history. Why not rent a family bicycle and peddle along Lakeshore drive perhaps stopping for a bite to eat at one of the beachfront restaurants. Then spend some time, working it all off at the local adventure park; play a round of mini golf, race a go cart or have some fun on the bumper boats. About 7 kilometres to the south is Skaha Lake which has a seemingly endless stretch of sandy beach and lots of green space. There is also a splash park, volley ball and tennis courts and a marina where you can launch your boat or rent a paddle board or kayak. Skaha Park also has a covered pavilion, which provides the perfect setting for family gatherings and evening BBQs. Don’t forget to stop by the locally renowned Tickleberry’s satellite location to pick up a delicious ice cream cone for dessert. If you travel west along Skaha Lake you will come to Sudbury Beach, one of the local’s best kept secrets. There are paddle board rentals and a California inspired concession.

A little further along you will discover Barefoot Resort that has shops, zumba on the beach, a juice bar, paddle board rentals and the best coffee ‘yurt’ in the whole Okanagan.

Tip: The summers in the Okanagan can get extremely hot be sure to use plenty of sunscreen, seek shade where possible and stay well hydrated. THE LEGENDARY LAKE MONSTER While in Penticton you should keep your eyes peeled, because you could be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Legendary Ogopogo, a friendly waterdwelling creature who lives in the depths of Lake Okanagan. Some say that this huge beast is 40 to 50 feet long and is often described as multi-humped, with green, black, brown or grey skin. The head is said to look like that of a snake, sheep, horse, seal or even an alligator. Some eyewitnesses say it has ears or horns; others don’t. All we can tell you is that Okanagan Lake is 84 miles long, 2.5 to 3 miles wide and has an average depth of 249 feet, so there are plenty of places for Ogopogo to hide away. Maybe you could set out on your own expedition to track down this mythical monster. Rumour has it that Ogopogo has a real sweet tooth and can sometimes be spotted hanging out outside Ogo’s Ice Cream Shop on Main Street.

ACTION & ADVENTURE You will never hear your kids utter the words, “I’m Bored!” during your stay in Penticton. Throughout the summer season there are endless attractions, activities and events to keep the wee ones occupied for hours on end.

If someone in your family is a fan of skateboarding Penticton has a great youth-park, boasting a huge street section with ledges, hubbas, rails, banks, quarter pipes, and stair sets. There are lots of dare-devil stunts being attempted here. The Riverside Skate/BMX Park is fantastic for Runbikes (super small little rippers) and is one of the best in the Interior, attracting bikers of all ages. Drop the kids off at the park then head to the beach, just a short walk away, for a little ‘you time’. Head over to Penticton Speedway for some adrenaline fueled fun. There are regular races and demolition events on the quarter mile oval track! “Hit-to-Pass” races are among the more popular events, but there is also the chance to watch Hornets, Street Stocks and Okanagan Dwarf Cars. There is plenty of parking and family tickets are available at the gate. Best of all, there is no seat that has impaired vision of the race underway. For a “locals know” moment try the handpressed cheese burgers and home-cut fries, they are the best. To keep that adrenaline pumping, drive out to Zipzone in nearby Peachland for some epic family fun. Zip-line over the canyon on one of the highest lines in Canada, plunge from the “leap of faith” – an 80 ft pole, perched on the edge of a 300ft canyon or make your way through the obstacle course. To unwind, book a shuttle up to Chute Lake and cycle the 40 kms back to Penticton. Along with breathtaking views you will find rock ovens that were constructed while the railway was being built. There are lots of places to stop along the way to take photos or just pause and take it all in.

Tip: Some activities will be subject to age restrictions, please check with each vendor beforehand.

NOWHERE ELSE, BUT HERE It is a rite of passage for any newcomer to Penticton to “Float the Channel”. On Riverside Drive you will find the starting point for your leisurely drift down the river. Bring your own floatie, raft or tube or rent one at the entrance, where you are also able to book a ride back. Be sure to take cool beverages, sunscreen and hats as in the late summer floating the channel can take as long as three hours from start to finish. You are able to exit at the half way point if the sun is getting a bit much. In neighbouring Summerland you can bring history to life with the sight and sound of the restored 1912 Steam Locomotive on the Kettle Valley Steam Railway. Take in ten miles of beautiful vistas; from lush orchards and vineyards to the spectacular view of lake and land from the Trout Creek Bridge 238ft above the canyon floor, as you ride along in a vintage passenger coach or open air car. 28

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

GETTING VERTICAL Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park was recently established to primarily protect species at risk, however it also serves as a prime recreational climbing, hiking and mountain biking area right next to Pentictons’ city limits. The area is considered world renowned amongst climbers and below are a few pointers from local expert Russ Turner of Skaha Rock Adventures Ltd. • Climbing Season: Late March - Late October. • Climbing Routes: 1,100+ established climbs in Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park. • Climbing Cliffs: 65+ different cliffs to climb on. • Grades of Difficulty: Very diverse, from novice to advanced climbs to choose from (top roping, sport lead climbing, traditional lead climbing). • Popularity: Perhaps the best cliffs to learn on in North America (Russ has volunteered 2,500 hours and $30,000 in materials to create some of the finest teaching areas on the continent).

34

OFFICIAL 2016 EXPERIENCES GUIDE | VISITPENTICTON.COM

• Trails: The Skaha Loop trail circumnavigates the Bluffs and takes approximately 4-5 hours to complete car-to-car, but there are many trails of different duration to choose from. Note that most of these trails are not ‘groomed’ and may include rough, rocky, talus-like sections, so be prepared. There is a trail map in the parking lot as well as maps at each trail junction. • Facilities: 2 parking lots - 83 parking stalls per lot. No garbage removal, therefore Pack it in - Pack it out. There are 6 outhouse locations, 2 in the parking lot areas and 4 in the back country.

Tip: New BC Parks Dog Ruling: Due to wildlife protection concerns, as of 2016 dogs are no longer allowed in Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park so plan to leave Rover at home. ON THE WATER Uniquely positioned between two large lakes, Penticton has obviously become a haven for water babies. On Okanagan Lake you will find rental outlets where you can book a boat or sea-doos. For some high-flying adventure book parasailing or for some family fun try a banana boat. Skaha Lake has a marina where you can launch your boat or rent a paddle board or kayak.

The northern end of Skaha Lake also lends itself particularly well to Kite Surfing. When the cross winds pick up you can see some pretty spectacular maneuvers. Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) is growing in popularity and if you’re interested in giving it a try head out to Sun N’ Sup in the beautiful village of Naramata or on Skaha Lake. Take a lesson, book a tour, or simply rent a board for a leisurely paddle.

ARTS & CULTURE

“Honouring the past, embracing the present and welcoming the future.”

Before fur trappers and early settlers came to the Okanagan, the Syilx First Peoples called this area home. For more than 7,000 years they have lived here in “Snpintktn” - which translates as “a place to stay forever” a phrase that has rung true for many. Embrace our regional heritage at the En’owkin Centre, a dynamic institution, which puts into practice the principles of self-determination and the validation of cultural aspirations and identity. One of the main features of the Centre is the large circular gathering space, which emulates the original underground housing of the Syilx people. At the heart of this great room are four poles carved and painted with pictographs commemorating the Four Food Chiefs. The surrounding gardens, which include trails, walkways and a nearby creek, offer an array of indigenous foliage. The Centre is also home to ECOmmunity Place, which comprises four separate eco niche areas, inhabited by several indigenous and endangered species including: Great Blue Heron, Tiger Salamander, Painted Turtle & Great Horned Owl. 36

Experience the sights and sounds of steam while traveling along the only preserved section of the old Kettle Valley Railway line built between 1910 and 1915. WINTER ACTIVITIES

“In Penticton you will learn to fall in love with winter all over again.”

Penticton is a place where you will learn to fall in love with winter all over again. The winters are so dry and temperate here that many outdoor activities continue right through the year. You can go for a bracing hike up at Munson Mountain and there are many year-round walking and cycling trails along the lakeshores, creeks and rivers right in town. After a day on the trails take some time out to warm up your insides with hot chocolate and marshmallows toasted over a lakeside fire pit.

ON THE SLOPES Being situated in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, Penticton does not see a huge amount of annual snowfall. However, a mere 25 minute drive from the city is the hidden gem of Apex Mountain Ski Resort, where you can wallow in the white stuff to your heart’s content. Apex is a full service destination resort known for the lightest champagne powder snow, incredible terrain, and friendly people. They offer a full range of lessons, from children’s and adults’

first-turns, to honing up on your existing skills. Wherever you’re at, they’ll improve your confidence and show you how to get maximum enjoyment from skiing and snowboarding! Whether you’re an absolute beginner or seasoned pro, Apex has something to offer. There are plenty of easy to moderate groomed runs as well as some heart stopping double black diamond routes for the more experienced. So, strap on your skis or board and take to the slopes. If you want more excitement, head for the Tube Park where you can release your inner kid while sliding down the snow on oversized inner tubes or max out your fun playing ice hockey on the outdoor regulation size ice rink. If a more relaxed approach with nature suits your style, try a quiet snowshoe tour or relaxing skate on the one kilometer skating loop, which winds through lofty pines. After the lifts close, you can dine and party, relax in your hot tub, or grab a hearty bite to eat at the Gunbarrel Saloon. For the ultimate pampering, there is always a spa treatment waiting for

you in the Apex Mountain Inn. There are also great kid’s programs, a licensed child care facility, and a variety of resort activities that make Apex Mountain Resort the ideal family getaway. There are plenty of accommodation options at Apex to suit any budget and regular shuttle services to and from the resort if you prefer to stay in the city.

T ip: If you’re staying in the city you can access a handy webcam online that lets you check out the conditions at Apex Mountain Resort before heading up the hill. WINTER WILDERNESS Answer the call of the winter wilderness at Nickel Plate Nordic Centre, which boasts 56 km of groomed trails for both classic and skate cross-country skiing, as well as 16 km of marked snowshoe trails. There are trails for all abilities and the centre offers a full line of rental equipment and professional instruction. Experience phenomenal views from above the clouds as you listen to the sound of fresh powdery snow crunch beneath your feet. Another fun way to enjoy the outdoors during the winter months is a snowshoeing tour with Hoodoo Adventures. Pick from a number of programs, from brief two-hour jaunts to wine and cheese tours, each of which is guided by a knowledgeable instructor who will share the history, flora, and fauna of the area. For an ultimate winter experience Hoodoo also offer a snowshoeing adventure that concludes with a three-course fireside dinner prepared by a local chef.

Penticton is renowned for its world class cycling and mountain biking routes and old man winter proves to be no obstacle with the introduction of Fat Biking. Fatbikes are just like ordinary mountain bikes but with over-sized tires and rims, designed for low ground pressure to allow riding on soft unstable terrain, such as snow. Freedom the Bike Shop in downtown Penticton offers rentals as well as advice on some of the best spots to ride. For something a little more adrenaline fuelled get in touch with Penticton Snowmobile Club. The club meets the third Wednesday of every month in winter and holds organized rides at local and other different riding zones and trails. All organized rides led by extremely knowledgeable guides.

Tip: Avalanches are a real danger when out in the backcountry so it makes sense to follow the advice of the experts.
