What to eat? The region’s cuisine combines coastal and mountain traditions. From Andean cuisine comes the picante de cuy (barbecued guinea pig seasoned with chili peppers and spices), cuchicanca (marinated and baked piglet accompanied with boiled corn gains), tamales (corn-based dough steamed in a husk or banana leaf), charqui (dried and salted beef loin), llunca kashki (chicken broth with wheat), and pachamanca (meat, potatoes, and corn cooked in a pit). From the coast of Áncash comes Huarmey ceviche and pavo (turkey) pepian. Buttery and fresh cheese, bee honey, and caramel are some of the cottage products available.
What to buy? The region is known for its colorful costumes, each a unique item made by hand. The motifs on woolen blankets are traditionally representative of the product’s place of origin. In addition to these woven and ecological textiles, stone and leather pieces are also made. Chacas is known for its stained glass and wood carvings. Ceramics are very popular in Taricá.
