Caballitos de totora These vessels are handmade from totora reeds and have been used since the time that the Moche and Chimu took them out to fish in the open sea. Today, they are used for work and transportation at Huanchaco Beach in Trujillo, La Libertad, (northern Peru) that is frequented by fisherman and beachgoers alike to surf the waves. Carlos Sala

Many of the festivals, rituals, and ways of life you can see today in Peru are the same as they were during the Pre-Colombian era. From outfits to expressions of popular art, from belief systems to the ways in which people work and even cook, Peru overflows with cultural expressions that keep alive the values our ancient cultures have passed down to us. 3 Indigenous Amazonian communities. In addition to being a refuge of biodiversity, the Peruvian tropical rainforest is home to indigenous communities that clearly have identities, languages, and customs all their own, such as the Yagua from Loreto, seen in the picture.

Rural community tourism. There are plenty of areas in Peru that have not felt the influence of the modern world and where you can still see people following their ancient traditions; one such place is Taquile Island, in the midst of Lake Titicaca (Puno), home to a community of weavers who produce astounding works of wearable art.

Experience elegance by watching the dance of the Peruvian paso horse in the ranches and fields of the Lurin valley on the outskirts of Lima. This breed, whose traits are found nowhere else on Earth, are a wonder on account of its characteristic gait that looks more like a dance step than a horse trot. In April, you can attend the National Peruvian Paso Horse Show at the Mamacona Ranch, where the best breeders come to show off their finest specimens.

16

Just 35 minutes south of Lima (36 km / 22 miles), it used to be site of an oracle to the god Pachacamac, creator of the world, and center of his worship on the coast. Ancient

Sacred cities and monuments From the oldest civilization in the Americas to the largest and most powerful empire in South America, Peru is the caretaker of the architectural vestiges and artistic heritage of fascinating cultures. Discovering them is an unforgettable experience. Eduardo Cayo

19

Machu Picchu, Cusco, and their surroundings. Machu Picchu is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, constructed by the Incas on the summit of Mount Machu Picchu (meaning “old mountain” in Quechua) and mimicking that mountain’s shape. Across from it stands another mountain: Wayna Picchu (“new mountain”), on which the Incas built another incredible site of the same name. This lost city is located just over 100 km (62 miles) by train from the city of Cusco. Heinz Plenge Pardo

20

Nasca Lines, Ica. Still as mysterious today as they were when first discovered, the Nasca Lines are gigantic geometric, anthropomorphic, and zoomorphic shapes on the desert floor. The Nasca literally plowed these lines some 30 cm (12 in) deep in the dry, encrusted earth in a place where the weather conditions kept these incredible geoglyphs intact for nearly 1500 years.

21

Colca Valley, Arequipa. An awesome spot for watching the majestic condor soar on the updrafts that rise up between 5000 (16,400 foot) meter tall mountains and the sheer cliffs of the Colca Canyon, one of the world’s deepest at 4160 meters (13,648 feet).

Northern beaches: Tumbes and Piura. It’s summer all year long on Peru’s northern coastline, where you can always enjoy the white sandy beaches and warm blue ocean. From there, you can engage in expeditions to watch humpbacked whales as they migrate towards Antarctica.

Natural

Magical biodiversity Peru is one of 10 megadiverse countries in the world, with 84 of the 117 life zones and 28 of the 32 types of weather. It is, furthermore, the top country in fish, butterfly, and orchid species, number two in bird species, and third in mammal and amphibian species. All of these live in natural habitats as fabulous as they are remote, bursting with life.

24

Manu National Park and Tambopata National Reserve in Madre de Dios. two of the most important protected natural areas in the country, where an enormous variety of bird, mammal, fish, insect, reptile, and plant species thrive, many of them endemic.

25 The Amazon River and Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, Loreto. Start your trip in Iquitos, sailing down the Amazon River, which runs past the city, until you reach the national reserve, an area covered by a tropical rainforest teeming with plants and animals, some like the pink dolphin that are found only in these waters.

26

Paracas National Reserve and the Ica Desert, Ica. The reserve and neighboring Ballestas Islands are sanctuaries for sea lions, Humboldt penguins, dolphins, flamingos, and other birds. Farther south, you enter into a desert of perfect sand dunes and the Huacachina Oasis. TalĂa Barreda

27

Natural energy. There are destinations where you can still unplug from the world, places as amazing as they are legendary, which pulsate with energy and where you can unwind in a world of pleasure. Just a couple are drinking a glass of champagne in a tent in the midst of the Ica desert or watching a sunset in a private country house with access to a spa and hot springs in a valley in Arequipa (in the photo). Luxury Amazon cruises. The chance of a lifetime to visit indigenous communities and to see exotic Amazonian plants and animals, all in the comfort of a five star trip with specialized guides and gourmet food.

29

Lima and the art of fine dining. Peru’s capital is also the culinary capital of the Americas. What has turned Lima into a true caldron of flavors is the variety and richness of ingredients from the coast, highland, and jungle, the blending of ancient and modern cooking techniques, and the fusion of influences from different cultures, like Chinese, Japanese, African, and European, resulting in a culinary melting pot that is now an important part of the Peruvian identity. We recommend you try a “trio de cebiches”, a seafood delight and just one of an immense list of small pleasures Peru offers.
