What to eat? The pepper has pride of place in Tacna’s cuisine, lending its bright colors to dishes such as the emblematic picante a la tacneña (mondongo stew, cow’s trotter, jerky and oregano), or adobo a la tacneña (marinated pork, with turmeric, garlic and vinegar, served with pumpkin and potatoes). From Pachía comes tierno maíz (sweet corn), which provides the sweetness for pastel de choclo. For a toast, there is wine, pisco and the damasco (apricot) cocktail. For a snack, one can try the Tacna olive, which has its own special flavor.

What to buy? The region’s craftsmen work with hollow reeds, leather, wood, and fabrics. Traditional Tarata dolls are dressed with the region’s typical costumes. The visitor can also purchase wine and pisco products, as well as infusions prepared in the region’s artisanal wineries.


What to see? Tacna Province Cathedral Paseo Cívico. Opening hours: 7:00 am - 1:00 pm / 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm The French firm Eiffel, founded by Gustave Eiffel, began the construction of this cathedral in 1875, but the work was interrupted many times and it was finally inaugurated in 1954 following a Neo-Renaissance design.

The Ornamental Fountain Paseo Cívico. A monument made by the English Simpson foundry, it was installed in 1869 as a gift to the city of Tacna from the government of José Balta. It sits on a granite base and measures six meters in height. The set of fountains is decorated with sculptures of children, mythical beings, lilies, scallop shells, and other marine figures.

Admiral Miguel Grau and Colonel Francisco Bolognesi memorial Paseo Cívico. This quarried stone monument measuring 18 meters in height was inaugurated in 1957 in homage to the heroes of the War of the Pacific. In August 2018 it was declared National Cultural Heritage.

Casa Basadre Cultural Center San Martin Ave. 212. Opening hours: Tue-Sun 9:00 am – 1:00 pm / 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Republican style house where historian Jorge Basadre Grohmann lived, considered one of the most notable Peruvian thinkers of the 20th century. The property was declared a historical monument of Peru on April 5th, 1978.

Tacna Historic Museum Apurímac St. 202. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8:30 am - 12:00 pm / 1:30 pm 4:00 pm. Tel. (052) 411-171. Ticket entry. Located in the center of the city one block from the former Municipal Palace, this museum was created in 1957. It also houses the Tacna Public Library.

Francisco Antonio de Zela House Zela St. 542. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8:00 am - 1:00 pm / 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm / Sun 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Ticket entry. The home of this forefather of Peruvian independence houses a photographic exposition that depicts events from the revolution that Zela led in the city. In honor of its emancipating past, Tacna received the epithet “Heroic City”.

Judicial House Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8:00 am - 1:00 pm / 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. (052) 415-225. This building was the venue for the signing of the Act of Delivery of Tacna on August 28, 1929. Housed here too are the Reincorporation Museum, the Tacna Art Gallery, and the Departmental Historic Archives.

Municipal Theater Psje. Calderón de la Barca s/n, facing MacLean Plaza. Visits by prior arrangement with the municipality. The facade of this building inaugurated during the Pezet government is made of quarried stone. One of its three floors hosts the main hall, whose walls are decorated with portraits of illustrious Tacneños such as the poet Federico Barreto and the painter Francisco Lazo.

Alameda Bolognesi Two blocks from the Paseo Cívico. This is one of the city’s busiest roads. Its first block preserves the original architecture of tradition mansions. The Caplina River flows beneath.

Locomotive Park Av. Grau, first block The space is home to a 1859 model locomotive (n.º 3), which transported Peruvian troops and continued to connect Tacna and Arica until 1940.

Tacna - Arica Railway Station / Railway museum Gregorio Albarracín Ave. 484. Opening hours for ticket sales: Mon-Sun 8:00 am 1:00 pm / 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Ticket entry. The old Tacna-Arica railway station still retains much of the machinery and many of the objects used during the second half of the 19th century. Its exhibition recounts the history of the railway. The railway is currently operational.

Campo de la Alianza Monumental Complex 8 km to the north of the city of Tacna (10 min. by car). Opening hours: Mon-Sun 8:00 am - 12:00 pm / 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. At this site where, on May 26, 1880, the Ba le of Alliance Heights took place during the War of the Pacific, homage is paid to its combatants. Besides the battlefield, there is also a cemetery, a monument and a site museum that displays weapons from the era, as well as uniforms, le ers, documents, and a scale model illustrating the battle.

Valle Viejo 3.5 km to the east of the city of Tacna in the district of Pocollay (9 min. by car). The wide open countryside here forms part of the Pocollay, Calana and Pachía districts. Its temperate climate and beautiful scenery make it the perfect place to relax and enjoy regional cuisine. Along its 23 km extension one can also visit vineyards that produce wine, pisco, and infusions.


Pocollay District 3.5 km to the east of the city of Tacna in the district of Pocollay (9 min. by car). This agricultural town is known for its export products, such as vines, plums and apricots. The Our Lady of Mercedes Church is located in the main square. The Las Peañas site museum exhibits objects recovered during the excavation of 56 Pre-Inca and Inca tombs.

Pisco and Wine Trail Magollo, Cercado, Pocollay and Calana sectors. This is one of the country’s most traditional wine regions. On a tour of the vineyards the visitor can discover the process used in the making of wines, piscos, and infusions. This begins with the vine, the plums and the apricots, all used as ingredients, and culminates in the craft production of the beverages.

Calana District 10.3 km from the city of Tacna (15 min. by car). This region was an important trading center during the Viceroyalty and the first years of the republic. The traditional mansions of quincha and mud bear testimony to this old splendor. The Virgin of the Rosary church is located in Bolognesi Square.

Pachía District 11.3 km from the city of Tacna (17 min. by car). This town has a main street and a small plaza opposite the Church of San José, rebuilt in 1870 after being destroyed by the great 1868 earthquake. This modest church holds a splinter from Christ’s cross, a relic gifted by the Vatican. Corn and pumpkin are the most emblematic products of Pachía’s fertile soil.

Calientes Hot Springs 23 km to the east of the city of Tacna in the Calientes annex (30 min. by car). Ticket entry. These thermal water pools at an elevation of 1400 meters on the banks of the Caplina River reach temperatures of 39 °C. Many people visit them because of their medicinal properties. Others do so to relax, since the facilities include tourism services, including accommodation and restaurants serving traditional food.

Miculla Archeological Complex 25 km to the northeast of the city of Tacna (30 min. by car). Ticket entry. Petroglyphs are found throughout this 20 km2 area framed by the Wawapas and Miculla mountains. They portray hunting, dance, and fight scenes. It is believed that they were drawn between AD 500 and 1445. In addition to humans, they depict animals (Andean deer, pumas, suris, snakes, lizards and foxes), as well as animals, plants, fruits, and constellations. A hike through the area provides the perfect opportunity to view the animals represented on the rocks, as well as local species of flora such as pepper trees, yaro, and cactus.

Los Palos Beach 41 km to the southwest of the city of Tacna (25 min. by car). This open beach with peaceful waters has bungalows and restaurants during the summer.

Boca del Río Beach 52 km to the southwest of the city of Tacna (45 min. by car). This seaside resort is one of Tacna’s most popular because of its shallow waters. It has accommodation and restaurants.


Jorge Basadre Province Museum of the Desert and the Sea 92 km along the Costanera Highway. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. Saturday and Sunday by prior arrangement with the Ite municipality: (51) 998-811-421. This museum arises in the midst of the Tacna desert. It has six halls that display archeological items, historic documents and geological samples, as well as representative biological species from the area. There are also two lookouts of 12 meters in height, from which the ocean and the Ite Wetlands can be seen.

Ite Wetlands 93 km to the north of the city of Tacna (1 hr. 30 min by car). Visits by prior arrangement with iPerú Tacna, telephone (51-52) 425-514. At 12 km², these coastal wetlands are the largest in Peru and the second largest in South America. This is a compulsory stop for bird lovers, since it is home to 85 local species and 59 migratory species. They can be seen from the lookout at the Museum of the Desert and the Sea.

Locumba Valley 93 km to the northwest of the city of Tacna (1 hr. 30 min. by car). This Inter-Andean valley is well known for its wine and pisco production, as well as for pepper cultivation. The town of Locumba, the provincial capital, is an important center of devotion in the south of the country since it is home to the Lord of Locumba religious sanctuary, also known as The Lord of the Burned Feet (Señor de los Pies Quemados).

Panina Waterfall At 2559 meters above sea level. From Tacna - Ilabaya - Cambaya, 328 km in total (5 hr. by car). From Cambaya - Panina, 4 km (2 hr. on foot). Free entry. Panina has two beautiful waterfalls, whose highest height is 30 meters. The water in this waterfall is produced thanks to the bed of the Camilaca River. The course of the cataract allows the formation of a natural pool, where visitors can cool off.

Tarata Province Conchachiri Waterfalls At 4500 meters. 84 km. of Tacna. Beautiful waterfalls due to deformations of the earth's crust that have formed due to the passing of time in the Maure river.

Apacheta Lookout 65.5 km to the northeast of the city of Tacna (1 hr. 25 min). The summit here reaches 3505 meters and offers a privileged view of the Tutupaka and Yukamani volcanoes to the north and the Barroso mountain range to the southeast. Its name means “wayside chapel” in Spanish alluding to its history as a site on the Inca Trail where stones were left as an offering to local gods.

Tarucachi Church Main Square of the village of Tarucachi, 79.1 km to the northeast of the city of Tacna (1 hr. 40 min. by car). This colonial church has two lateral towers crowned by wooden crosses. Inside, its walls were painted with ash from the yareta bush, wild plants, and a type of tuber. This affords them a bluish color, among other natural pigments.


Tarata 88 km to the northeast of the city of Tacna (1 hr. 30 min by car). The Church of San Benedicto, built in 1741 in dedication to the patron saint of the province, is located in the main square, together with a cultural exhibition hall. The latter displays domestic objects and farming tools used by the ancient inhabitants of Tarata.

The Santa María Inca Trail and Tarata Terraces 3 blocks from the Tarata Main Square. On a tour along the Inca Trail, the visitor can see Pre-Hispanic terraces that are still in use for the cultivation of corn and potatoes. After a few minutes, the Santa María archeological site is reached, a settlement constructed by ancient inhabitants of the area. To finish the walk, the trail reaches the Qala Qala archeological site, which was used as a cemetery.

Ticaco Hot Springs 12 km to the north of the town of Tarata (15 min by car). Ticket entry. A thermal hot spring is the source for nine individual baths and a pool. Its waters reach a temperature of 51 ºC.

Candarave Province Aricota Lagoon 154 km to the south of the town of Candavare (4 hr. 30 min by bus). Rainbow trout are plentiful in this large lagoon that lies at 2800 meters. It is also home to cormorants and the Andean goose.

Candarave 170 km to the northeast of the city of Tacna (6 hr. 30 min by car). The name of this peaceful town comes from Aymara and means “place of the condors”. At 3415 meters, it is an excellent location for viewing the flight of these majestic birds. Alfalfa fields are found at the foot of the Yucamani volcano. In 2018, the Anata de Camilaca dance, from the district of Camilaca, was declared a National Cultural Heritage.

The valley of Geysers 35 km away northeast of the city of Candarave (1 hr. 30 min. by car). The place is characterized by geysers with temperatures that exceed 86 °C (186 °F). On the way you can observe andenes of the area and enjoy an impressive view of the Yucamani Volcano, surrounded by an extensive queñuas forest. There are also two hot springs sources, one of them has a temperature of 37 °C and the other of 40 °C, both are known for their therapeutic properties to treat diseases such as arthritis and rheumatism.
