HISTORY & HERITAGE
Since its foundation as a trading post before the French and Indian War in the 1750s, Pittsburgh has been a prime destination for shipmen, traders, artists and businesses. Located where the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers meet to form the Ohio River, its Golden Triangle has drawn generations of people from around the world to form 90 diverse neighborhoods. Pittsburgh’s history is embraced in numerous attractions, such as The Frick Pittsburgh, a cluster of museums and historical buildings, including “Clayton,” the residence of industrialist Henry Clay Frick. The Senator John Heinz History Center, Pennsylvania’s largest history museum, is devoted to western Pennsylvania history. The Nationality Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh depict the architectural styles that immigrants brought to the region. And the Duquesne Incline, a funicular that scales Mount Washington provides an historic ride to one of the most beautiful Clayton at The Frick Pittsburgh views in America. From 1875 to 1980, western Pennsylvania was the Steelmaking Capital of the World. Though heavy industry has all but disappeared, the legacy of hard work and honest values has been handed down from generation to generation. Pittsburgh’s steel heritage is kept alive thanks to the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area. Visitors learn how the steel industry played a major role in the economy and culture of the region on Carrie Blast Furnace Tours. Guided and self-guided architectural walking tours of various Pittsburgh neighborhoods are available through the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. Fallingwater, a National Historic Landmark, is located about 90 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, it is considered to be the most exceptional home in the world. Another unique Wright-designed house, Kentuck Knob, is just a few kilometers away.

ARTS & CULTURE
Pittsburgh is considered one of the best arts and culture destinations in America, a testament to the city’s industrial heritage and its innovators (Andrew Carnegie, H.J. Heinz, Thomas and Andrew Mellon, to name a few), whose fortunes created what remains today. Pittsburgh Symphony at Heinz Hall
Set in the heart of the city, downtown’s vibrant Cultural District is home to 10 theaters within a 14-block area. From a world-renowned symphony, which performs in its elegant Heinz Hall home, to the ballet, opera, dance companies and Broadway shows all at the beautifully restored Benedum Center for the Performing Arts — and from contemporary and classical plays performed by the Pittsburgh Public Theater, to the diverse programming at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture — there’s always something happening in the Cultural District. Among the city’s fine art galleries lies The Andy Warhol Museum, which celebrates the life and pop art of the Pittsburgh native. The Mattress Factory is hailed as one of the world’s best museums for installation art. Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History house two museums in one — with an outstanding collection of fine and decorative arts. And, under the same roof, the third-largest collection of authentic dinosaur bones in the world are on display.
