Hafnarhús Hafnarhús is located downtown Reykjavík by the old harbour and houses the permanent collection of the works of Erró, one of Europe’s most notable pop artists. The temporary shows at Hafnarhús tend toward the progressive and experimental, emphasising works from established contemporary artists and encouraging the works of newcomers. The museum is a refurbished warehouse and was built in the 1930s. The atmosphere inside the building is fresh and provocative. It contains six galleries, courtyard, a multipurpose room, a library and a book and design shop. The stylish café on the second floor is a popular lunch spot. National Museum of Iceland Whether your visit to Iceland is for business or pleasure, making time for a trip to the National Museum will leave you enlightened about the making of the Icelandic nation and its history. The museum offers a variety of fascinating exhibitions and one permanent display illustrating lavishly the story of Iceland’s past, from the medieval days of Viking settlements to current contemporary culture. The main exhibition has over 2,000 artefacts discovered in various parts of the country; however, in pride of place amongst the museum’s many treasures is the Valthjófsstadur door featuring elaborate medieval engravings depicting scenes from the legendary 12th century knight’s tale Le Chevalier au Lion. Kjarvalsstaðir houses the works of one of Iceland’s most influential and recognised artists, Jóhannes S. Kjarval. The exhibitions at Kjarvalsstaðir focus primarily on paintings and sculptures of the established masters of modern art. The building is a fine example of Nordic modernism, it features floor-to ceiling windows that look onto the beautiful Klambratún Park. One can take in the view while enjoying a drink or a snack at the museum´s café. There is also a design- and- book store in the lobby and a lovely family-activity space. Ásmundarsafn Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum is the former home and workshop of the sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson who designed and mostly constructed the building himself. The museum serves to preserve his work and life, and displays the largest collection of his sculptures both inside and outside the building. Ásmundur´s art greatly reflects his lifelong interest in the Icelandic sagas, folk tales and classical mythology. The building itself is a magnificent work of architecture, largely inspired by Egyptian pyramids and the mosques of the Middle East. The impressive sculpture garden surrounding the building can be enjoyed by anyone for free. The museum also houses an elegant design store. Opening hours: Daily 10:00 – 17:00

Reykjavík Art Museum
Those who are passionate about paintings and other works of art, the National Gallery of Iceland has a wealth of valuable artworks on display, with various exhibitions by both foreign and Icelandic artists. The main emphasis of the collection is on 19th and 20th century Icelandic art, but international art is also featured. The museum owns the most valuable collection of works by Icelandic artists in the country, including some works by internationally renowned artists. Opening hours: Daily 11:00-17:00.
Reykjavík Art Museum is Iceland´s largest network of art museums and displays both modern and contemporary art, paintings, sculptures and works in different media by established local and international artists. The museum is housed in three unique buildings across the city and can all be visited in one day by foot or bus. The entrance ticket is valid to the all the buildings at the same day. The museum holds some of the most distinguished works in of Icelandic art. It plays an important role in preserving traditional works of art, displaying the works of world-renowned international artists and promoting emerging local talent. The museum´s exhibits run gamut from the historical to contemporary and boundary-pushing. There are over hundred special events at Reykjavík Art Museum every year that range from lectures and symposiums to alternative rock events. A visit to Reykjavík Art museum is a must for every art-lover and it is open daily.
The Settlement Exhibition In 2001 archaeological remains were excavated in Aðalstræti, which turned out to be the oldest relics of human habitation in Reykjavík, with some of the fragments found dating to before 871 AD. During the excavation a longhouse from the tenth century was also discovered. The hall and a wall fragment are now both carefully preserved at their original location and form the focal point of the Settlement Exhibition Reykjavík 871±2 - a fascinating exhibition about life in Viking times. As part of the exhibition the construction of Viking Age buildings is explained using multimedia technology and enhanced with computer technology to provide an insight of what life was like at the time of the first settlers. Exhibits also include artefacts from archaeological excavations in central Reykjavík. Opening hours: Daily 10:00 – 17:00

Museum of Photography The aim of the museum is to shape a unique vision and to be leading in its field. The museum preserves various photo collections from professional and amateur photographers, around 5 Million photographs from the period around 1870 to 2002. The collection´s themes are diverse. One can find family photographs, photos from portrait studios, industrial- and advertising photographs, press photography, landscape photographs and more.

Árbær Open Air Museum Árbær is an open air museum with more than 20 buildings which form a town square, a village and a farm. Most of the buildings have been relocated from central Reykjavik. Árbær was an established farm well into the 20th century, and the museum opened there in 1957. Árbær Open Air Museum tries to give a sense of the architecture and way of life and lifestyles of the past in Reykjavik and during summer visitors can see domestic animals. Viðey Island With the Reykjavík Welcome Card you can enjoy a short trip with the Elding ferry service to the lovely island of Viðey, situated just off the coast of Reykjavík. Apart from its ancient ruins and rich historical background, other attractions include impressive works of art by Yoko Ono (the Imagine Peace Tower) and Richard Serra (the Milestones project). Fans of architecture will also be interested to learn that the church in Viðey is one of the oldest in the country and that Viðey House is the first building in the country to be constructed with stone. With an extensive network of trails the island can be explored both on foot and by cycling. Bikes can be rented on the island. No matter which path you take, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the surrounding mainland, and to the west you’ll be able to see the impressive outline of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The bird life on Viðey Island is quite diverse and about 30 species nest on the island. Among common birds in Viðey are the eider, fulmar, graylag goose, snipe, purple sandpiper and oystercatcher. Reykjavík Zoo and Family Park The Family Park and Zoo in Laugardalur is open all year. The Zoo includes most Icelandic animals, both wild and domesticated, from foxes, reindeer and seals to cattle, horses and sheep. In summer the Family Park offers many rides and play equipment for children of all ages. Outside the summer season the Family Park remains open as a play area. The Coast Guard Ship Óðinn (probably Iceland’s largest historical relic!) is docked next to the museum. Óðinn served in all three Cod Wars during the last century and played an important role in rescue work at sea.
