greater, safer

san antonio

The priority on safety of our community and visitors is one of the reasons that San Antonio is a top vacation and business destination in the country. San Antonio’s civic, business and association communities have joined forces to ensure that as we emerge from the COVID-19 crisis we maintain safety as the most important aspect. As part of our community’s commitment to health and safety, Bexar County has established a requirement that all people 10 years of age or older wear a cloth face covering over their nose and mouth when in a public place where it is difficult to keep six (6) feet away from other people, such as visiting a store or indoor attraction. San Antonio business owners and associations have produced The Greater. Safer. Together. Pledge (in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance) with the aim to protect the health and safety of employees and customers.

Greater San Antonio business owners PLEDGE to: • Use face covering • Practice social distancing • Conduct temperature checks • Provide hand sanitizer • Follow CDC cleaning protocols • Implement contactless payment when possible • General COVID-19 awareness training for employees • REPEAT! • “Greater, Safer San Antonio”

This is

san antonio There is so much to see in the Alamo City. From the famed River Walk to Pearl, to Historic Market Square and La Villita Arts Village, to the missions— San Antonio is home to rich culture and dramatic history. With its world-class museums, colorful days-long Fiesta, and many other special events, the city is a living celebration of arts and culture. As a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, San Antonio is also a culinary capital, where students will delight in endless restaurant options. And, of course, you’ll want to visit the Alamo. Welcome, we are so happy to help you explore San Antonio.

The Culture Heart of San Antonio San Antonio is a city with a rich heritage that embraces so many cultures from around the world. From major exhibits to neighborhood cultural attractions, there’s a whole world to explore at San Antonio’s renowned museums, performance venues and historic places. The city’s eighteenth-century Spanish colonial missions—San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo), Concepción, San José, San Juan, and Espada— have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together, these five missions represent the largest collection of Spanish colonial missions in the United States. Student Handbook 2020 | Visit San Antonio 6

our

culture When you step inside any of the five historic missions, you take a step back in time and into the lives of the early Spanish settlers who founded what would become the city of San Antonio. Begin your historic journey at the Alamo, first established as Mission San Antonio de Valero in 1718. Now known as one of the most pivotal battle sites in the country, the Alamo became a military outpost in 1793, cementing its iconic role as a central locale on Texas’ road to independence. Move among the missions using Mission Reach, which extends south of downtown to connect the River Walk to four of the five UNESCO status San Antonio Missions. Mission Reach winds through an eight-mile riparian woodland ecosystem, featuring smooth walking and biking paths punctuated by public art for a pleasant outdoor experience.

Honoring the memory of the battles fought at the Alamo and San Jacinto, Fiesta San Antonio has remained the city’s signature event since the late nineteenth century. Since 1891, it has evolved into an eleven-day extravaganza with more than one hundred events that celebrate the history, arts, and cuisine essential to its heritage.

THE ALAMO Multi Phase restoration and enhancement The Alamo, one of the most historically significant sites in the U.S., is being preserved and enhanced for future generations through a multi-year, multiphase restoration and enhancement process.

san antonio The restoration includes preservation of the Alamo Church and Long Barrack and the creation of a worldclass museum and visitors center. RUBY CITY Ruby City is a new 14,000 square foot art exhibition space on Camp Street. The modern, crimson-hued building houses the Linda Pace Foundation’s growing collection of more than 900 paintings, sculptures, installations and video works by contemporary artists from around the world. THE SAN ANTONIO BOTANICAL GARDENS New Education & Event Center is the gateway to a 38-acre urban oasis of nature just minutes from downtown. This 3,500 square foot state-of-the-art indoor venue is ideal for events of all sizes from lectures and symposiums of up to 350 guests or receptions and banquets with up to 200 seated

SAN PEDRO CREEK TRANSFORMATION Heavily utilized during the Spanish colonial era, this $175 million redevelopment will reflect San Pedro Creek’s rich history and create a sense of place by making the two-mile stretch more accessible with hike and bike trails and through the addition of public art. It features installations from prominent San Antonio artists including murals, ceramic art, tiled benches and historical text and poetry.
