Big Sioux River Recreational Trail River Greenway

Big Sioux River Recreational Trail Sioux Falls has a unique family-friendly trail system for biking, walking, jogging and roller blading. The trail system consists of over 26 miles of paved, off-street trails that allow users a scenic and safe trail experience without ever having to cross a city street. The trail system encircles the city and many of the city parks offer access to the trail. The trail is maintained year-round, allowing visitors a chance to explore the city at any time of year.

River Greenway

The River Greenway is the city’s newest addition to the park system. Located just south of Falls Park on the bike trail, the Greenway allows visitors to take in a free concert at the amphitheatre or sit back and relax. The Downtown River Greenway offers a variety of entertainment options along with a paved trail to enjoy the Big Sioux River. Take in the history of downtown Sioux Falls and dine in one of the restaurants between 6th and 9th Streets. Additional features include an interactive water feature, kayak port, two new pedestrian bridges, landscaping and seating areas.

The Commission for the Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) recognized Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation as the first accredited parks and recreation agency in the state of South Dakota and 90th in the nation out of an estimated 10,000 agencies. CAPRA is the only national accreditation of parks and recreation agencies, and is a valuable measure of an agency’s overall quality of operation, management, and service to the community. This accreditation earned by Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation puts Sioux Falls in the top one percent of all park and recreation agencies in the country.

Turn Back Time and Preserve the Past Prairie Star Gallery is filled with centuries-old art forms displayed in a beautiful century-old building. It’s located in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls, on Phillips Ave. It’s a gorgeous place, with spectacular art and wonderful ambiance. We think you’ll agree with the 10,000 customers who have already visited – the gallery and its art are fabulous! The exceptional variety of our art distinguishes Prairie Star Gallery from other galleries. n Original Art n Indigenous handmade n Authentic and high quality The 500 artists represented are predominately from Northern Plains tribes. The artists’ tribal traditions influence their art and the stories they tell through their sculpture, paintings, bead and quill work, drums - everything. Our art comes from a time before the railroad and telegraph, when everything was hand-crafted and everyone was an artisan to some extent. No matter the artists’ tribe or band, you’ll find our art to be incomparable. We’ve been told we have the finest gallery of Indigenous art, and the most knowledgeable staff, by people who have visited galleries in all 50 states. We won’t argue. So stop in, put the world on pause, and experience the smallest gallery you’ll ever get lost in – Prairie Star Gallery. Open Monday and Wednesday - Saturday from 10am-5:30pm. Closed Sundays and Tuesdays.

Blood Run National Historic Landmark Blood Run National Historic Landmark is just a short drive from Prairie Star Gallery in Sioux Falls. At first glance, the Blood Run National Historic Landmark (designated in 1970) looks like other hilly, wooded river bottom land - extraordinarily beautiful. But several things mark it as unique. First, it is like a natural island in a sea of residential and commercial development a few miles southeast of Sioux Falls straddling the Big Sioux River in Iowa and South Dakota. Second, on close and educated examination, there are signs of past human habitation everywhere on the forest floor and meadowlands. In fact, this is one of the oldest sites of long-term human habitation in the United States. Third, the site has been identified by the National Park Service in 2000 as having national importance worthy of Park development. The river, abundant wildlife and wood for fuel, fertile flood plains, availability of catlinite (pipestone) and protection from winds made the area a crossroads of Native American civilization from 1300 - 1700 AD. Occupants were primarily Oneota Indigenous Peoples, including Omaha, Ioway, Oto and Yankton Sioux Tribes. These tribes combined hunting and gathering with agriculture and lived in semi-permanent sites. By 1700, Blood Run was a significant cultural center for ceremonies, trade, and social purposes and frequented at times by as many as 6000 Oneota Native Americans. Several possible reasons for site abandonment around 1750 are debated, and might be resolved with additional research. Burial mounds, storage caches, and signs of earthen enclosures remain. Some items of pottery, tools, trade goods and jewelry have been placed in safekeeping and more on private land need protection. The site is a time capsule of Indigenous culture. No other Oneota site of such size and integrity is known to exist in the United States.
