SALT POTATOES @ BULL & BEAR

ROADHOUSE. The ultimate when it comes to iconic Syracuse foods, the salt potato is a starchy staple reminiscent of summertime in Central New York. Thanks to the salt springs lining the southern shores of Onondaga Lake, Irish immigrants boiled potatoes in the briny water and voila, the infamous Salt City spud was born. WHAT TO ORDER : Loaded Salt Potatoes piled high with pulled pork, bacon, cheddar, sour cream and chives at Bull & Bear Roadhouse , the Kimchi Potato at Kasai Ramen , the ‘Cuse Salt Potato Pizza (their best seller!) at Toss & Fire Pizza

The best franks you’ll ever eat. Period. Since 1879, the Hofmann Sausage Company has been making the tastiest German franks, all-beef hot dogs and coneys (AKA Snappy Grillers). Typically a summer treat, you can find these franks at local food truck round-ups, stadium concessions, street fairs, ice cream stands, even at the new Hofmann Dog Haus at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. But Heid’s is the place to go for that nostalgic bite you remember. WHAT TO ORDER : The Mixed Double (frank + coney) at Heid’s , with a side of onion rings, French fries and fried pickles.

ALL THE BBQ @ DINOSAUR BAR-B-QUE. We know, we know. This isn’t Kansas City or Memphis, but Syracuse holds its own when it comes to America’s favorite smoky, slathered and slow-roasted cuisine. It’s impossible to mention BBQ in Syracuse without bragging about the original Dinosaur Bar-B-Que , voted Best Barbeque in America in ABC’s “ Good Morning America Weekend ” poll, arguably the city’s most famous foodie stop. There’s plenty more saucey, smoked goodness to enjoy throughout the area, including fabulous brisket and pulled pork to savor at Bull & Bear Roadhouse, Limp Lizard and a handful of food trucks around the city too! WHAT TO ORDER : Go big or go home — Fried Green Tomatoes, Mac & Cheese & the Family Stylin’ Bar-B-Que Combo Plate with a side of mac & cheese at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que . Still hungry? Share a plate of the Créole Deviled Eggs and bring some sides home for later.

Doug’s Fish Fry is all about delicious, hand-battered food. Located in the village of Skaneateles, Doug’s serves fresh fish dinners year-round. Just about everything on the menu is made in-house. WHAT TO ORDER : The Fish Dinner with a side of onion rings, and save some room for the tastiest local fruit sundaes during the summer months — just make sure you save some for the rest of us!

Those are just the Syracuse stops along the Upstate Eats Trail! Plan an extra few days to taste the garbage plate in Rochester, sponge candy and hot wings in Buffalo, and spiedies in Binghamton. Take pictures while you enjoy the food and tag # UpstateEatsTrail to share your adventures.
