Flying 16 B-25B Mitchell medium Bombers, these brave men, known as ‘Doolittle Raiders’, flew a bombing mission from the USS Hornet, deep in the western Pacific Ocean, striking strategic targets in Japan. With low fuel reserves, the mission plan was for each crew to do all they could to recover in China. Several crews struggled to reach the Chinese shoreline; not all crews were so fortunate. Now known as the “Doolittle Raid”, this mission took place on April 18, 1942, and helped turn the tide of the war in favor of the Allied Forces. In attendance from that historic mission, is navigator, and 1939 Alabama Alumnus Major Thomas Griffin, and his close friend and Army Air Corps comrade on the mission, co-pilot, Lt Col Dick Cole.
