What’s in a name?

Vacaville was founded in 1851 on land purchased from Manuel Vaca. That’s why it’s called Vacaville. There aren’t that many cows here! (Get the full story of Vacaville’s founding families on page 51.)

The Buck Mansion was built by architect George Sharpe in 1891 with an extravagant price tag of $5,000.

Built in 1907, Vacaville’s Old Town Hall has the distinction of being one of the first reinforced concrete structures in the West.

Preserving Nature

California’s most reowned botanist, Willis Jepson was raised in Vacaville. At 25, Jepson and John Muir founded the Sierra Club.
