America’s first National Wildlife Refuge is nestled near the Atlantic coastal community of Sebastian, Florida. This small island in the Indian River Lagoon, though just a dot on the map, boasts a significant international footprint. Known as Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, it encompasses over 5,400 acres of protected waters and lands, offering a sanctuary for diverse wildlife and a treasure trove of natural beauty.
The nation’s most historic refuge, Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, offers a variety of recreational opportunities for birders, nature photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can explore two 3-mile loop trails along with the newly added Wildlife Trail, each offering a glimpse of the refuge’s diverse wildlife and landscapes. The easy ¾-mile Centennial walking trail features views of Centennial Pond and leads to a 500-foot ADA-accessible observation tower and boardwalk, providing a stunning view of Pelican Island in the middle of the Indian River Lagoon.
The best time to observe Pelican Island’s famous residents, including migratory white pelicans and nesting brown pelicans, is from fall through spring. History buffs will appreciate the informational signs along the trails, which detail the story of the nation’s first wildlife refuge and the people who established it. Additionally, the surrounding Lagoon waters and numerous spoil and mangrove islands within the refuge boundaries offer abundant opportunities for kayaking, boating, and swimming.
