Melbourne’s Neighbourhoods Take a Ride

There’s no better or greener way to explore outside your own neighbourhood than by public transport. Here are a few suggestions for new adventures.

A Little Sunshine 7

Wherever you are in Melbourne, it’s easy to get to Footscray Station, one of our major transport hubs. When you arrive, transfer to the Sunbury Line and get off at Sunshine. This is an interesting neighbourhood that offers great dining and important historical sites.

Head to Brimbank Community and Civic Centre to enjoy the awardwinning design and view the art collection. There’s also one of HV McKay’s Sunshine Harvesters hanging from the ceiling. They were made here from 1906 to 1992 – in fact, the suburb was named after the company.

When you’re ready for lunch, take a seat at Cô´Đô for traditional Vietnamese soups that go beyond pho. And if you want to stock your pantry before heading home, Tai Phat Supermarket has a bounty of Asian ingredients, vegetables and fruits. +brimbank.vic.gov.au +facebook.com/

Ready for a day of animals, roses and winery visits? Then jump on the Werribee Line and head to its final stop. When you get off at Werribee, you’ll need to jump on the 439 bus to Werribee Open Range Zoo. Once you’ve safari’d to your heart’s content, walk to Werribee Park Mansion. There you can tour the historical house, visit the Victoria State Rose Garden, admire the sculpture walk or head onwards to Shadowfax Winery, with its cellar door and restaurant. +zoo.org.au/werribee +parks.vic.gov.au +shadowfax.com.au

Beach Bus 9

Most people living on the north side of the Yarra see the beach as a faraway destination. But jump on the 903 bus, which runs through Coburg, Preston and Heidelberg, and you can go to Altona Beach in one direction and Mordialloc in the other. Head south and, at the end of the line, wander along Mordialloc Pier and the beach. Stop for a meal and perhaps a cocktail at SunnyBoy Beach Club, set right on the foreshore. +sunnyboybc.com.au
