Looking for a sweet and simple spot to get away for a couple of days? The Forsyth B&B is a cozy, modern gem located a short walk away from the historic Rondout waterfront. Owner-slash-chef Tamara Ehlin whips up inspired cooking for her guests with locally sourced ingredients, which may be enjoyed by the dining room fireplace. The four room options, plus the newly renovated Barn House, each have their own mix of vintage and modern decor, and guests will enjoy all the nearby shopping and dining that downtown Kingston has to offer.

With top-notch facilities, luxurious amenities, and seasonal sporting options galore, it’s no wonder Mohonk Mountain House is one of the most well-known resorts and spas in the Hudson Valley. Dive into this winter wonderland by ice skating in the beautiful outdoor pavilion, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing the many on-site trails, or snow tubing with the whole family. It’s all included in your stay. Then curl up by one of the many fireplaces to warm up, or relax in the spa’s eucalyptus steam room or outdoor heated mineral pool.

Located at the base of the Shawangunk Mountains, The Greenhouses at Audrey’s Farmhouse are repurposed from a 1950’s flower nursery. Guest rooms are charming and modern, all with private patios. The 1700’s cedar-shake farmhouse has been rated #1 pet-friendly B&B in the US and has another set of contemporary guest rooms with an all-natural feel. The Greenhouses Kitchen serves fresh seasonal fare at the communal table. Wooded trails wind through the sprawling property, and outdoor firepits are ready to warm you up at the end of the day.

First opened in 1766 and listed on the register of Historic Hotels of America, The Beekman Arms Inn boasts no shortage of rustic-chic lodging options; decor strikes a balance between old-fashioned and contemporary, though amenities are unobtrusively modern. The Delamater Inn, its sister site, offers 50 romantic guest rooms, 29 of which also feature wood-burning fireplaces. The Tavern includes a charming Colonial Taproom, and serves brunch on weekends, as well as lunch and dinner daily.

Shop Locally

This week while working at the Woodstock Farm Festival, I discovered a new vendor I had never met before. Due to rain and thunderstorms in the forecast, many vendors didn’t show up; however, this ominous forecast did not stop a five-year-old boy from setting up shop next to me. He carried a tiny black stool (for him to sit on) and a slightly larger one. His mother lovingly draped a scarf over the larger stool, where he carefully laid out his product, placing a cardboard sign in front that read, in rainbow-colored letters, “COLORED ROCKS. 50 CENTS.” He then got him-

self a donut, sat down, and proceeded to rally in his customers. The parents of the young businessman-in-the-making watched from across the street, letting him have full reign over his business. He’d yell, “Rocks! Rocks! Gotta get some rocks! Anyone want a rock?” Next to him was a little glass jar for coins, which was soon filled, including some folded paper bills. As customers approached his stand, he spoke to them one by one, carefully guiding them to their perfect rock. He was a natural businessman—confident, polite, and charming, yet relentless.

The Hudson Valley is home to a diverse culture of business owners, artisans, makers, and craftspeople. While it is known to be a destination spot for tourists and city dwellers, the small business economy is a distinctive characteristic of the region. When you hear that something’s been “handmade in the Hudson Valley,” you immediately feel the intention that went into making that product.

SHOP LOCALLY

It wasn’t what he sold that appealed to customers so much as the feeling and intention behind his business. (I’m sure no one went to the market that day because they had a dire need for purple, sparkly rocks.) The genuine passion and care that he put into coloring and selling rocks was irresistible for them. He believed in his product, and he believed people would enjoy it.

1.

When you shop locally, the money stays in the community.

2.

Money that stays in the community helps the local economy thrive and supports the lives of community members.

3.

You get a chance to build relationships—with business owners and employees, as well as with fellow customers.

4.

Shopping locally also means you save on travel time and expenses. Less time in the car means more time shopping, which might get the holiday shopping done sooner (which might be a plus!).

We are all about helping people and promoting folks we work with. It’s so important, these days, to gather together. “When I first saw the Black Barn, I was immediately drawn to it and could not get it off my mind,” says Katherine McMillan, curator and purveyor at the Black Barn and owner of the brand Northern Grade. “I met with Ron [Sharkey] in late-January 2016, and I just walked in, and the smell of the wood and the details in the ceiling and space—the energy of the Barn spoke to me, and I wanted to be here forever. Later in the year I opened up at the Barn with Ron as a holiday pop-up, and he never got rid of me.”

Pratt, has been happily connecting lovers of well-crafted pieces with the things that they love since the mid-90s. He then found a hideaway in Accord and opened Downtown Antiques, which quickly became a go-to for interior designers. Something about Ron’s taste just resonates. When he acquired and renovated the Black Barn in High Falls, and it became the scene of the first iteration of the Field + Supply “modern makers craft fair” in 2014, The New York Times’ style magazine T took notice.

The Black Barn/Barn Days venture has a shimmer that’s hard to describe. Ron, the owner of the Barn with a degree in art education from

Katherine, meanwhile, had helped establish Northern Grade, a wellloved, rustic-chic brand that strives to connect “conscious consumers”

But life was calling Katherine—who was born in New York City and raised in Brooklyn Heights, and spent summers and weekends in the woods in Blooming Grove, Pennsylvania—back to the country. “I think coming upstate was the best decision for me and my children, and to pursue the business projects I wanted. I’m focusing on the Barn now, and other consulting projects in design and merchandising strategies. And we’re growing the Barn markets into a place for designers and brands to come in and have a pop-up shop, year-round.” Katherine is loving the upstate life. “I love living

here,” she says. “I love High Falls so much. The community-driven ideals in a small town are what I want my kids to grow up with and know. I go hiking in the woods at least once a week, I love how much there is to explore. I guess you could say I am a naturalist, and I like to be outdoors as much as possible. I like to keep things simple in my personal style. Bare necessities...basic supplies, but quality ones.” Her instinct for quality—for clean lines and graceful curves and resonant objects—is evident on the Barn Days Instagram feed. Birdhouses, hammocks, stoneware, clothing, and furniture lure the eye and create a desire to experience them firsthand. A key part of her dream is helping other creative souls to hone their own dreams. “My business, Barn Days, is a store, but I also work on design concepts and strategic partnerships for makers and artisans to grow and work with developers. If you want to build a store or market, I can try to

help you do that the right way—but I love meeting customers and owning a shop, so the Barn will always be my first love.” Customers are Katherine’s special joy. “I get to meet so many different people!” she says. “We have a variety of folks come in, lots of people just exploring and wandering through town. We have regulars, all sorts of folks with one common characteristic: they love to shop for quality and discover new and interesting things that really have human connection. Whether it is an antique or something new, you can see that a person took care and time to create our goods.” As a broker of both items and ideas, she’s filling a vital role in the Hudson Valley maker economy. “I sell quality goods, promote makers and artisans, design retail concepts, and create markets for local folks to sell goods,” she says. “Ron has been doing the tents for years, and it’s always drawn a huge crowd. Together, we are growing and mor-

phing and getting more and more cool folks to come be vendors here.” Hudson Valley folk, not to mention their metropolitan neighbors, have always loved a good community flea market; at the Barn, the experience becomes an art form in itself, curated and exquisite, yet downto-earth and welcoming. “When Ron let me try out my ideas and

products for a month, I got to see what we needed to do to make it work for the space and clientele. We had music and drinks; we made it more than just a store. We have local vendors popping up inside in the winter, and we welcome all and any who want to come in and create their own mini store with us for a day, a week, or a month. We want to help.”

“I sell quality goods, promote makers and artisans, design retail concepts, and create markets for local folks to sell goods.” That spirit extends to each customer who enters the space, and beyond to the wider community. “I love meeting people and seeing how much every individual cares about what they are buying,” Katherine says. “It’s so interesting! I am also happy to see folks not wanting to waste a bag, or to add to the

overspending problem we have as consumers. People want to buy, but they are thoughtful and conscientious about it. I love learning the things you learn about personality and life and beauty by seeing how people shop—it’s really about community and chatting and who you meet. I enjoy that part a lot.”

11/1/18 2:06 PM

The Black Barn is retail for the wide-awake, the polar opposite of mass production and exploitation. Ron’s eye for fine, rustic items, and Katherine’s instinct for cutting-edge makers, are blending into a species of marketplace with the potential to thrive far into the future. “Our plans for the year are to open up the Barn to more local makers and brands who want to showcase their products and business,” Katherine says. “We want to host pop-ups inside and out,

and really engage vendors with the community. We want it to be the place folks come to grow their business, meet a friend, have a coffee, host an event, or do something to open up to the community. We are all about helping people and promoting folks we work with. It’s so important, these days, to gather together.” The best way to keep up with the latest, says Katherine, is to follow @barndayshighfalls and @ronsharkey on Instagram. Looking for an espe-

cially fine rustic piece, an outlet for your own retail passion, or an outing for the afternoon? Treat yourself well, and keep in mind your standing invitation to the happenings at the Black Barn/Barn Days.

rowing up in western New York, Dave Pillard yearned for city lights. “I'm one of those people who fled small-town America and ran to NYC as fast as I could, swearing I’d never leave New York,” he says. “Well, look where I am now!” Surrounded by peaks and creeks, Dave is once again living—quite happily—in the countryside, running what a TripAdvisor reviewer calls “The Best Little Retail Store” on Main Street, in the sweet Catskill village of Phoenicia. “I guess there is some truth to the idea that life is a circle, and the familiar calls out to us,” he says. “Here I am back in the same kind of rural scenery.”

It’s been 25 years now since Dave found himself back in the hills. In 2002, he and then-partner Bill Forbes decided that a tasteful array of contemporary home goods, decor, art, and gifts would make the perfect complement to Bill’s existing store, The Tender Land—a more traditional and rustic gift shop (named after Bill’s favorite opera The Tender Land by Aaron Copland; Dave still thinks it suits the Catskills to a T). When Bill left the area in 2006, David blended the rustic aesthetic into his contemporary offerings, and the result is a unique shopping experience that pleases the senses, mind, and soul. Graceful, useful pottery, scented

soaps and candles, gleaming wood, fiber arts and sparkling jewelry surround the visitor; reviewers rave about both the friendly welcome and the finery with equal, five-star enthusiasm. “I want people to feel comfortable and relaxed in my store,” says Dave. “I have a little something for everyone: babies, children, and adults young and old. There’s never any pressure—I tell people that if

they need help, to let me know. And I pride myself on my customer service—I gift wrap, I ship, and I fill my store with good, quality, affordable merchandise. I'm very selective with what I offer, so my customers can assume they're getting good things at a good price. I try to feature locally made products if they're appropriate for my store and the price is right. But don't forget—everything is made by the locals somewhere!” 43

11/1/18 2:06 PM

The Cats, says Dave, are “a pretty darn good place to be a country boy. I'd say my lifestyle here in the Catskills is like that of a lot of people’s—we like to have fun but we also relish in being laid-back. I enjoy socializing; meeting people who come into my store is one of my favorite things. But I also love sitting on my deck at home and looking at the trees swaying gently in the breeze. It's easier to have that balance here.”

Tender Land Home has become something of a Phoenicia institution over the years, but returning visitors will always find something new. “There’s always new merchandise coming in,” says Dave, “to keep it fresh and exciting.” Finds that sparked him at press time include: elegant paper placemats featuring 19th-century William Morris floral designs, clever baby bibs that hold a pacifier within reach, a chic square

By the time you’re reading these words, there will be a fresh batch of quirky loveliness. Tender Land Home has evolved with the times. Realizing he couldn’t compete with free shipping on massive pieces, Dave adjusted. “When I first opened sixteen years ago,

I sold much more furniture,” he says. “I still have some very beautiful locally made furniture, but I've changed the focus somewhat to smaller things that people can take back with them to their home here in the Catskills, or their apartment in the city.” Meanwhile, he’s embraced social media marketing with gusto, keeping fans and friends up on his

latest finds on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest with the help of Chris Bick of Pioneer Agency. Running a retail business in a hamlet of just a few hundred souls, even when it’s been named one of the “10 Coolest Small Towns in America” (Budget Travel, 2011), is inevitably an adventure. “I always tell people, if you're going to start a business in the Catskills, make your business plan and then throw it out the window,” Dave says. “You can't possibly plan for all the ups and downs that are peculiar to our area. So have access to more capital than you thought you'd need, because you'll need it. Hang on for the ride with a tight grip, and eventually you'll pass that tipping point from start-up to successful business. Businesses are like fingerprints—each one is unique and has its own timeline.” For Dave and his shop, that timeline continues to be a multilayered love story, bringing people together with the special pieces that will enhance their lives. “One of the things that I'm happiest about is that I have my own business in the Catskills and can live here full time,” he says. “It’s a dream of many people to do that, and I’m living that dream. I have a wonderful partner, Robert Hessler, who is an amazing ceramicist. He's supported himself for decades making his pottery from his studio in Kingston. We’re both lucky—we have each other, we have our friends, we have successful businesses. No matter where you live, that’s what it’s all about.”

yde Park is genuinely old-school Hudson Valley, so rich in long-established assets and attractions that it has no need to brag or gentrify. It was home to Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, a stomping grounds for Frederick William Vanderbilt, and is currently home to the Culinary Institute and its array of restaurants. And, as locals have known for generations, one

of Hyde Park’s other main attractions is next-level thrifting, and the The Village Antique Center on Route 9 is one of its crowning glories. “Oh, goodness, you want me to talk about myself,” says Rose Gaches. “Here, talk to ‘Mary.’” (Name changed by request.) “She’ll answer your questions.” Mary takes the phone. Rose and Mary are both

originally from the Bronx “when it was countrified, which only people who lived there would understand,” Mary says. “Fifty years ago. We came up here and watched this change too, from cornfields on both sides of the highway to IBM bedrooms and beyond.” Rose has been an avid antiquer since 1971; she and

50

11/1/18 2:06 PM

Mary have been friends since even before Rose founded The Village Antique Center 30 years ago. For 14 years, Mary had her own shop; nowadays, she comes in to hang out and help her friend. Antiquing, says Mary, is something that a person grows into. “It happened by accident. She became a collector, early on. She started collecting and collecting,

and then you have so much stuff that, you know, you sell, you upgrade, you study and learn a little more, and go a little higher-end, a little rarer. “Some of us started early, ahead of the times. And Rose had the gift. She was always really into it. Like a superstar compared to us.” (“I AM NOT!” yells Rose firmly in the background,

The Center includes roughly 20 independent dealers, curated but not micromanaged, with a wide variety of tastes, specialties, and price ranges. “Oh, she’s not. Yes you are,” says Mary.) Rose’s denial notwithstanding, it is a matter of record that when The New York Times wrote about antiquing along the Hudson in 2008, the story was illustrated with a photo of a marble statue at her Village Antique Center. Reporter Anita Gates wrote: “small, rambling rooms were crammed with

merchandise from various dealers at various price levels. There was a spectacular selection of chandeliers ($265 and up, way up), a carousel horse on a rocking-horse base ($4,500), a gorgeous writing box with mother-of-pearl detailing ($1,100), a lovely inlaid walnut Art Deco secretary-armoire ($850) and a pretty collection of jewelry.” 51

35665 Visit Vortex Text.indd 51

11/1/18 2:06 PM

People like coming here because we have so much fun. “Rose has a very good idea about things,” says Mary. “She does have a lot of unique items. There are people who live up this way who’ve been dealing with her forever, and she develops a high level of insight into their decorating and collecting needs.” There’s a lot more to a pleasurable antiquing experience than simply buying something old. “We treat the customers like family,” says Mary, “whether it’s a collector we’ve been working with for years or a random newcomer. People like coming here because we have so much fun; we have people from other states— both dealers and vacationers—who stop in every year when they’re in the area. There’s a special camaraderie to the fascination with quality old things. A lot of the regulars get a hug when they show up and again when they leave. We like people. They share things with us, and it makes a richer experience.” The Center includes roughly 20 independent dealers, curated but not micromanaged, with a wide variety of

tastes, specialties, and price ranges. “Everybody comes in,” says Mary, “second homeowners from the city, wealthy estate owners, those who don’t have much at all … and they all get the same warm welcome. We’ve helped some people furnish their entire homes. We have a ten-year-old girl who rides her bike here. I heard her telling someone ‘They love me here.’ Yes, we do. “We were lucky. We grew up in great times. In the 80s, a bunch of us were all learning the business together—what a great time that was! Rose just always dealt with the most interesting and biggest pieces. Besides running the Center, she teaches antiques. There are always amazing pieces here—you should come on in and see.”

Christen Drexler is a fashion industry veteran with more than 20 years of experience under her belt. Lucky for us, she’s brought her expertise up north to the Hudson Valley, and created OAK 42, a contemporary fashion and lifestyle boutique in Kingston.

55

35665 Visit Vortex Text.indd 55

11/1/18 2:06 PM

Christen’s vision for OAK 42 is simple: clean, contemporary apparel, accessories, and home goods at an affordable price point. Christen officially opened OAK 42 in August 2016. She and her husband had relocated upstate a few years earlier, eventually settling in Kingston in 2015, and Christen had entertained the idea of opening a boutique for some time. When OAK 42’s location became available, Christen was still working in corporate fashion in New York City. But the storefront—a cozy spot with beautiful tin ceilings, tucked away on John Street in Uptown Kingston—reminded her of the boutiques she loved in Nolita and Brooklyn. It was too perfect to pass up, she says. Plus, Kingston was in need of some more retail destinations. “I wondered, ‘Where do people shop around here?’” she recalls. Christen’s vision for OAK 42 is simple: clean, contemporary apparel, accessories, and home goods at an affordable price point. Nearly everything in the store is priced under $100, save for coats and sweaters. 56

35665 Visit Vortex Text.indd 56

11/1/18 2:06 PM

But Christen doesn’t sacrifice quality or stylishness for a price tag. Her fashion industry experience has

“It’s cliché, but when people walk into the store, they say, ‘Oh, it’s very SoHo-looking,’” she adds

helped her forge valuable connections with sellers at showrooms in New York City’s Garment Center. She carries popular, contemporary brands like Project Social T, BB Dakota, and Bel Kazan—fun, easy fashion that Christen describes as “cute and chic, but not complicated.”

with a laugh. “It’s clean-looking, but with a twist. And I keep my inventory very tight and curated.” Customers at OAK 42 really run the gamut. (Christen says she’s sold the same thing to “a woman in her 60s from Kingston and a young

girl from the city!”) This is what Christen loves most about running her boutique—meeting new people every day, and being part of the eclectic Kingston community. Her favorite thing to hear from returning customers is that they’re still loving and wearing the clothes or accessories they purchased from OAK 42 months ago. In the New Year, Christen plans to expand the storefront, install new dressing rooms, and continue bringing in new brands. She doesn’t have any radical plans to transform OAK 42, but that’s totally OK with her: “If it works, it works.”

Her talent is a legacy. Her mom taught art, and Joanna developed her own creative sensibilites early in her life. From the age of fifteen—first at Kingston High School and then at SUNY New Paltz—Joanna knew she wanted to work with stone and metal, and has never looked back. Jared, the other “J” of J Bliss, grew up in Dad’s design studio and filled notebook after notebook with sketches —some realistic, some fantastical—full of almost-real creatures and whimsical worlds.

“Every piece, whether one-of-a-kind jewelry or artwork, has a story, and working so intimately with customers, we get to connect with them and be a part of it.” The two have known each other since seventh grade, but didn’t become close until they reconnected in early adulthood. “We met at a diner to catch up and we haven’t wanted to be apart since,” says Jared. “We just had to be at the right point in our lives, I guess.” Joanna had been doing craft fairs since her high school days; minoring in businness at SUNY had equipped her to think realistically about opening her 64

own store one day. Once she reunited with Jared, she realized right away that their works, as well as their personalities, were a good fit. “The first event we did together was Celebration of The Arts in New Paltz in 2010,” says Joanna. “For the next six years we continued doing this work on the side, growing and learning our business. In 2016, we both committed full-time to our business, becoming J Bliss Studios in May, and opening our own shop that August on Tinker Street in Woodstock.”

The location was a logical choice. “Woodstock has a history of supporting art and artists, which draws many people who appreciate them,” says Jared. “There’s an enthusiasm for artist-owned-and-operated shops. Joanna has worked in Woodstock since she was 16, so she’s familiar with the community and the customers. Also, we are the only jeweler in town with a shop that offers repairs or custom work made on-site.”

“Since everything is handmade, no two pieces are alike, so there is always something new and exciting to discover with each visit.” –Jared Bliss, co-owner 65

“Sustainable practices are important to us, so we work with recycled gold and silver, harmony diamonds, and heirloom stones.” Both Joanna and Jared grew up in Ulster County and find it a nurturing place for their art. “We especially love the natural beauty,” says Joanna. “And living in a community that has an appreciation and understanding of the arts is important to us. The region has been inspiring and supporting artists for centuries, and we love being a part of that story!” And the region loves them right back. “People who have an appreciation for art and locally handmade items enjoy coming into the studio,” says Jared. “Most are locals or part-time residents, but we also serve tourists, and we have some customers that travel specifically for us. It’s important to us to be accessible to locals and have pieces at a variety of price points.”

As Joanna and Jared were preparing to open their shop, the couple worked on a business plan with Ulster County’s Small Business Development Center, a program that provides free coaching for young entrepreneurs. They knew that they had something special to offer. “With one of us always in the shop, customers work directly with the artists creating their work, and can see the studio where it is made,” says Jared. “Sustainable practices are important to us, so we work with recycled gold and silver, harmony diamonds, and heirloom stones. We’re always creating new designs, expanding our range of work. Since everything is handmade, no two pieces are alike, so there is always something new and exciting to discover with each visit.”

When crafting a custom piece, Joanna works with love and intention, whether bringing new life to a treasured family piece or creating something from scratch. “We offer our own designs and often create customized versions of them for our customers; we’ll also work with clients to create entirely new designs to suit their needs,” she says. “I often work with a customer’s old jewelry and heirloom stones to redesign them. We join in the excitement of new couples starting their journey, or the reflection of those who have lost a love. Bringing new life to heirloom pieces can be very emotional. We’ve helped those looking to commemorate a moment in the past or present, and families who are reconnecting at a tender moment. Every piece, whether one-of-a-kind jewelry or artwork, has a story, and working so intimately with customers, we get to connect with them and be a part of it. Nothing is more rewarding than sharing these beautiful and emotional moments with our customers!” “We also love being able to work together, whether it’s side by side on independent projects or collaboratively,” says Jared. “As partners in life and business, as well as best friends, being able to work in the studio together is truly special.” His pen-and-ink works and art objects

seem to spring from a nearby planet in the same enchanted universe, at once whimsical and deep. With a one-year-old son and a two-year-old studio on Tinker Street, the couple still finds time to enjoy Hudson Valley living to the fullest. “We love being in nature, as well as watching nature documentaries about the wonders of the world—especially David Attenborough’s,” says Jared. “Joanna has always been passionate about community and connecting with others around her, especially those involved in the arts. I studied literature and philosophy in school, and being an avid reader informs my art. I’m especially influenced by science fiction, notably Ursula K. Le Guin, and my book collection could be described as expansive.” “Having a baby a year after opening a business, we’ve needed to play to our strengths and carefully balance our time,” says Joanna. “It’s been a challenge, but the business and the baby are both growing steadily! We like being able to do a little bit of everything; having different types of work to do keeps things fresh and can help prevent creative blocks. We also both enjoy being able to work directly with our customers.”

As the future unfolds, expect an ever-expanding array of unique and lovely pieces. “We hope to expand our fine jewelry line,” says Joanna. “We often make gold pieces to order, but want to expand the number of designs we have in gold in the shop. And Jared has been creating more art objects, like matryoshka dolls and exquisite blocks, and plans to have more in the near future, such as ornaments.” Each summer, the couple plans to hold a Studio Celebration with new works and refreshments; for 2019, they want to add live music. But don’t wait for summer. Make J Bliss Studios part of your next Woodstock weekend; the studio is open Thursday through Monday, just down the alley at “Lotus Lane” off Tinker Street. HOLIDAY

ift wrapping for the holidays can be a real chore. Often it is saved for the last minute, and we find ourselves wrapping feverishly, with the gift-giving deadline looming and feelings of regret that we procrastinated for so long. We at VISITvortex decided that this year, we are not only going to be proactive about our gift wrapping, but we are going to be creative and have fun with it!

We are happy to share our experience with you, and hope that we inspire you, not only in new and creative ways to make your own wrapping papers, but also in building vibrant community.

Just by making it into a fun event with friends, gift wrapping turns out to be a surprisingly lovely and gratifying process.

visitvortex.com

About once a month, friends and acquaintances within our community get together to explore a new craft of mutual interest. Whether it’s indigo-dying of fabrics, making leather pouches and purses, or pressing flowers, it’s a chance to get together, share good food and wine, make new friends, and deepen existing relationships. While preparing for this Holiday/Winter issue, we thought it would be fun to plan a gift wrapping piece around our crafting get-togethers. Just by changing the energy and feel of the process, and making it into a fun event with friends, gift wrapping turned out to be a surprisingly lovely and gratifying process.

Naturally Hand-Dyed Papers: Dip-dying paper allows for versatility in both colors and design. We created our own all-natural dyes using goldenrod, indigo, black walnut, and pokeberry, which added another creative and fun element to the process. Folding thin white paper into triangle shapes and then dipping the corners into various colors made for unique and vibrant results. Special thanks to MJ! Rubber-Stamped Papers: Using premade rubber stamps (for a more custom and personalized feel, you could make your own stamps using linoleum cuts, or even a simple potato). No need to buy expensive inks—feel free to use any extra paint you have on-hand. Whites and silvers look great on kraft paper, and darker colors stand out best on rolled white paper, which can be purchased at any craft store. Flower Rubbing: With the help of a local florist friend who brought a bunch of flowers to work with, we experimented with various rubbings. We loved the look of the delicate hydrangea flowers, and were fascinated by the different impressions that each type of flower created. Feel free to experiment with a variety of flowers at home. Simply place the flowers between your sheet of paper and wax paper, and rub with the back of a spoon.

Using premade rubber stamps is an easy way to make a custom wrapping paper

Wrap and Embellish with Natural Yarn, String, and Twine: Take your wrapping to another level by wrapping the gift boxes with yarn, string, or twine in unique and interesting ways. Fabric Wrapping: Furoshiki, as it’s known in Japan, is the tradition of wrapping clothes, gifts, or other goods in cloth or fabric. This is a resourceful way to get rid of leftover fabrics and scraps you have around the house. Group gifts together with complementary

fabrics. Create more interest by using a wide range of textures, prints, and colors. Use string or ribbon to tie off/close the wrapping, rather than using tape. Embellish with Nature: Make your gifts really stand out by bringing the outdoors in. Gather hearty items from nature, such as evergreen and fir clippings, red berries or holly, birch bark, tree bark covered in lichen, or pinecones. Try with dried flowers, leaves, feathers, or beads for a different look.

Giftwrapping with this kind of intention is a special way to show your love and appreciation for your friends and family.

We all know that feeding the masses starts days ahead of time with recipe hunting, list making, and ingredient shopping. Not to mention crunch time when everything has to come together. With a caterer to handle all of this, you can concentrate on the parts of planning you love, like decorating, planning fun activities, or finding the perfect outfit.

2. m e n u o p t i o n s

If some of your friends follow a gluten-free or vegan diet, while others love nothing more than traditional shepherd’s pie with rich gravy, we’ve got caterers on our list who can handle both with aplomb. Chefs who work with vegan or gluten-free fare know how to ensure those options are just as tasty as anything else on the menu, thus avoiding unsatisfied guests (or, worse yet, allergic reactions).

You invited folks over because you love their company, right? With a caterer handling the serving and the refreshments, you’re free to get into those long, lovely conversations, go outside for a photo session, or dance the whole set without fretting over whether your guests’ food and drink needs are met.

4. c u s to m s e rv i c e

Talk to a few caterers; many offer ranges of service from full-on event design and planning, decor, and clean-up, to simply showing up at the door with savory trays and pans full of goodness and vanishing again.

We all know your friends are there to see you and would be perfectly happy with the same deviled eggs and wings as last year. But why not spoil yourselves with something more exotic? Caterers in the Hudson Valley know exactly where to source the perfect local ingredients. Your guests can indulge themselves on foods that are more complicated than you might attempt to create in your own kitchen. A caterer is dedicated to preparing those dishes flawlessly.

Word is out around Saugerties: Olsen & Company, the cafe and specialty grocery store that opened on Partition Street in June 2017, is exactly what the town needed. With its selec-

has become a go-to shop in the village. Sourcing mostly from local suppliers, Olsen & Co. carries a unique array of cheeses, jams, syrups, sauces, pasta, honey, herbs, meat, dairy, and eggs,

as well as home and body care products. It’s a specialty place, but not so special that it’s not extremely useful; it offers solid value and top quality.

MEET THE OWNERS prepared foods, and every product we stock our shelves with.” –Marianne Olsen, co-owner

As a lover of cooking and eating good fresh food, Marianne found herself doing some catering for commercial shoots and recording studios, as well as some private chef work for well-known musicians. The Olsen Family Farm, a collaboration with daughter Elizabeth who had gone to college for animal science, began producing goats’ milk soaps that they could sell online and at farmers markets and craft fairs where they met producers

The concept of Olsen & Company (O&Co for short) began in the Saugerties countryside and is a collaborative venture. Marianne Olsen was one of the many children of young families in the 60s who, seeking fresh air and open spaces, relocated upstate from Brooklyn. She eventually met and married a man from Saugerties and together they raised five children on a piece of land gifted by his family.

of fine artisanal foods. Meanwhile, the Olsens tossed around the dream of opening the sort of place they wished they could find when shopping downtown. Another family member, Janelle OlsenLeipheimer, turned out to be the missing piece to this vision, and was just the right fit. The perfect space opened up, and it was time. O&Co is a long-polished dream that’s been realized with love and hard work. “Our lifestyle is very similar to the one we promote through our business,” says Marianne. “We appreciate well-made products, espe-

cially from local, small businesses. From our homes to our food to how we spend our free time, we are careful in our selections. We believe in slowing down and appreciating what the beautiful Hudson Valley has to offer. We value family and time spent together, especially when it includes good food and great wine.” Growing up in the Saugerties countryside, neither Elizabeth nor Janelle had thought that they’d find professional fulfillment right in the village. But life is truly what happens while you’re making other plans. “I grew up thinking I would never stay here,” says

Elizabeth. “I went away for college and moved to Pennsylvania for a short period. Then I realized the Hudson Valley had turned into a place that was really unique and had a lot to offer me. Now I can’t see myself anywhere else.” Janelle, meanwhile, had headed to the big city to study fashion, and stayed a while. “I spent 10 years living the fast-paced life,” she says. “I decided it was time to slow down, so I left the city to move back to Saugerties. And I found I’d never realized how special this town was.”

It’s a specialty place, but not so special that it’s not extremely useful; it offers solid value and top quality. “As consumers ourselves, we wanted a place to purchase great cheese, fresh bread, and other provisions under one roof,” says Elizabeth. “Since something like that didn’t exist here, we thought why not just open it ourselves? It was years before the perfect spot was available and the timing was right in all of our lives. The final push for us was the agreement from Janelle to be our third partner. She moved back to Saugerties at the perfect time, and now we know we could’ve never done this

without her. The storefront was ideal for us as a new business; we didn’t want to take on too much, and it was a blank slate—small, cute, and quaint. Not to mention, Partition Street is absolutely the most prime location for a business in Saugerties.” The team set about working with local distributors, learning how to use an espresso machine properly, and “tasting a lot of cheese,” they recall. Not all relatives make great coworkers, but

these three do. “The dynamic between the three of us as owners is unique. Sometimes it’s amazing. Sometimes it’s a little hard. Sometimes it’s really hard. Most of the time we have a great time working together. We’re family so that can go both ways. But at the end of the day, it’s nothing a good bottle of wine can’t fix. We each have different strengths, and we work together harmoniously to get the job done. And we love not having a boss. We—us three—are the boss.”

A shared philosophy informs their business practices. “We try to be very honest about what we’re offering. We are careful and thoughtful about each ingredient we put into our prepared foods, and every product we stock our shelves with. We taste before we buy or serve something. We try to keep our prices fair. We buy organic when we can. We’re always open to new ideas and suggestions from our customers. We want to know our customers and what they like or are looking for

when they come into our shop. If we can’t help them, we always do our best to send them to someone who can.” However, the commitment to customer service at Olsen & Co is paramount. “Our services are limitless,” they say. “We offer organic coffee, clean, locally sourced food, and a wide variety of local products. We want to be able to offer options for everyone, so we do our best to cater to most dietary

restrictions. We want to make people happy, so there isn’t much we wouldn’t do to accommodate our customers. Last year, we even baked 30 preordered Thanksgiving pies.” Not surprisingly, their skills and spirit have won hearts, minds, and taste buds. “We’ve learned that every business has something different to offer. Even if someone else may be carrying a similar product or serving a similar dish, everyone does 93

35665 Visit Vortex Text.indd 93

11/1/18 2:08 PM

things a little differently. One business can’t cater to every person. And within a small community, it’s best to encourage and support other businesses. We also think, as consumers, it’s important to spread your love and try to support each business in different ways.” With the adventure heading toward its second birthday, the Olsens couldn’t be happier with their progress—“People are still walking through the door!

And we’re still here!”—and are thinking it might be fun to be able to offer even more of the good things they and their customers love. “We’d love to be able to accommodate more customers. It’s a challenge to keep from buying 35 kinds of amazing jam! Seriously, we need a bigger space. It’s not quite a plan yet, we’re not sure when or if, but we’re open to it and on the lookout for the next place we can make our own.”

We believe in slowing down and appreciating what the beautiful Hudson Valley has to offer. That low hum you hear is the purr of approval of lovers of fine, fresh, local food and stunning coffee. Would you like yours to be drip, pour over, espresso, cappuccino, or cold brew? I’ll take mine with a shot of maple syrup and a chocolate chip hemp cookie. Mmmm.

One of the best ways to experience the winter season in the Hudson Valley is by cross-country skiing our area’s scenic parks and destinations. Miles of ski trails with varied terrain offer something for everyone.

Not only is cross-country skiing an equalparts strenuous and enjoyable workout, the sport also allows you to rediscover your favorite parks dressed in winter white! Here are a few of our favorites.

With its added elevation, this area holds on to snow better than its surrounding valley, making it a great locale for gliding through that powder. Plus, its unique ecology and geography of pitch pines and white Shawangunk conglomerate make it a mesmerizing place to explore! 100

This park offers a more “rugged” skiing experience as only certain carriage roads are groomed while other backcountry trails remain ungroomed. You can either begin your journey from the Spring Farm Trailhead or from the West Trapps Trailhead. For those looking for a more intense, perhaps even more advanced excursion, I’d suggest beginning at the Spring Farm Trailhead, which has immediate uphill climbs and a network of ungroomed trails. The West Trapps Trailhead offers a gentler (and straighter) skiing experience on the Overcliff and Undercliff carriage roads, though the trails are limited. Visit mohonkpreserve.org for more information on these skiing routes. 101

Bring your own equipment or rent from the hotel’s ski shop where the knowledgeable staff will guide you toward which trail is best suited for you. At this beautiful site, you can ski up to Skytop Tower, enjoy a lakeside jaunt, or explore any number of trails offering sweeping views of the Catskill Mountains.

There you have it, folks—three wonderful places to crosscountry ski this season right in your own backyard! Hopefully this adds another winter activity to your repertoire and gives you another way to ski those winter blues away. Fingers crossed we get just the right amount of snow … not too much, not too little … Goldilocks style. Happy skiing!

Janette Bower, founder of 58Flora and Flora Beauty, was born and raised in the Hudson Valley. The city life called to her at age 22, and she relocated to New York, where she spent the next two decades honing her craft as a hair colorist. By age 28, Janette and partners

opened a boutique hair salon in trendy SoHo. “It was a dream come true,” she says, recalling how she enjoyed cultivating relationships her “wonderful, inspiring” clients. Somewhere around this time, Janette’s interest in holistic beauty began to blossom.

Intrigued, she enrolled in classes to further her knowledge in aromatherapy, perfumery, green medicine, and psychology, all disciplines that inform her work to this day. Janette believes the impulse to create runs in her blood: Her father was a chemist by trade, and she comes from a long line

In October 2017, she launched 58Flora, a line of luxury hair, face, and body products with a focus on clean, quality ingredients and strong performance. All products—think elegant perfumes, soothing facial mists, and luxurious body oils—are free of synthetics, parabens, and phthalates and

All products—think elegant perfumes, soothing facial mists, and luxurious body oils—are cruelty-free. are cruelty-free, keeping in line with Janette’s ethos of causing no harm and promoting self-care. Less than a year later, Janette opened Flora Beauty, a wellness apothecary and spa tucked away on John Street. Kingston’s upstate demographic and ease of access to the surrounding area drew her in, since she already felt the push to return to her country roots, and she couldn’t resist the quaintness of John Street. “It reminds me of SoHo or Paris,” she says. Her team offers a variety of services, including acupuncture, waxing, facials, massage therapy, hair styling, and coloring. What ties it all together is a passion for natural beauty products free of harmful ingredients, and a mindbody-soul approach to wellness—two core values Janette says her clients at Flora Beauty also hold close to heart.

Moving forward, Janette plans to continue expanding 58Flora’s product line and the studio at Flora Beauty, all the while staying true to her original vision of creating of a natural, holistic sanctuary right here in the Hudson Valley.

“I’ve been on a long journey to get to this point,” she adds, “so I’m extremely grateful for opportunities and the passion that drives me to create.”

You’ve been taking care of everyone else this winter and it’s not over yet. Getting through the holiday rush, shoveling out the car to get to work. Sledding or snow tubing with the kids. Not to mention, that winter cold and indoor heating can make your skin cracked and dry. Seasonal depression can sap the energy you need to do everyday things.

That is why making time to reenergize yourself is essential, not only to make it through the winter months, but also to enjoy them. Not to worry, help is here! The Hudson Valley is replete with opportunities to immerse yourself in floatation therapy, slow down and stretch with yoga, or spend some time away at a resort and spa.

The first floatation center of the Hudson Valley region, Mountain Float spa offers both floatation therapy and massage. Floatation therapy allows your body and mind total relaxation, the feeling of floating away from stress … and gravity. In your float cabin, noise does not reach you. With 800 pounds or more of Epsom salt to help you, gravity is no longer an issue. The water is kept at a soothing 93.5 degrees—this is skin-receptor neutral, which means you’ll lose track of where your body ends and the water begins. Floatation therapy has been known to promote total calm and peaceful relaxation, eliminate fatigue and jet lag, improve sleep, alleviate stress, fight addiction, eliminate chronic pain, promote creativity, facilitate meditation, energize, rejuvenate, and revitalize a tired soul. Book a floatation therapy session and a massage for a “float sandwich” to experience the integration of relaxation and detoxification. Mountain Float Spa offers a year-round 15-percent discount to firefighters, police officers, and veterans. Check out their website for special holiday discounts and monthly surprises.

Having deep roots in the Hudson Valley and local community, Zephyr Float exists to provide a scientifically proven method of reducing the power of stress over the human body, alleviating chronic pain and bettering oneself through introspective learning. Floatation therapy provides the much sought-after “experience of nothing” in a world of information overload. Purchase Float Bundles to buy multiple floats for discounted rates, or purchase a six-month membership for one float per month . Share them with friends. Deep-tissue and therapeutic massages are also available—enjoy a post-float massage or a post-massage float for an ultimate escape from stress. As a continued thank you to our veterans and active military personnel, Zephyr Float offers one-hour float sessions for a discounted price of $35 every first Monday of the month. Simply sign up for a 60-minute float that day and come in with your military ID. Corporate accounts are available to treat your employees to an experience that nourishes the body and soul.

Sara Trapani’s journey started in Rockport, Massachusetts, on the tip of Cape Ann on the North Shore. She ventured across the state to UMass at Amherst for college, then across the sea to Senegal, West Africa for two years’ service to the Peace Corps in 2009, and then back to western New England, where she started apprenticing at a yoga studio. She eventually found a full-time job at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, working in development. And then, love struck. “Shortly after moving to the Hudson Valley, I met Ryan, my husband. He’s a New Paltz native, so the rest is history,” she says.

WELLNESS Sara’s experience in yoga, organizational development, and marketing, nurtured by her time at Omega, has served her well in opening Whole Sky, as has the sense of possibility and determination that she internalized while living in Senegal. But it was motherhood that inspired her to seize the opportunity: “When I returned from maternity leave after having my firstborn, something shifted in me,” she says. “I realized the fragility of life, and that working nine-to-five was not going to work for me as a new mother. The seed of a dream to open my own studio had grown within me; I’d always put it off, thinking I wasn't ready. Then, on a whim, I went and looked at what would become our original space in High Falls. I knew it was the right spot. I asked Ryan what he thought and he said, ‘I think if you don’t do this then you’re always going to regret it.’ At that moment, it became an easy choice because I knew he was 100 percent in my corner.”

Sara and Whole Sky Yoga’s 14 other teachers offer 40 weekly classes geared to all skill levels and many styles.

On March 29, 2014, Whole Sky Yoga was born. “I had been teaching yoga for years at Bard College, at Omega Institute, and at other local studios. In High Falls, I was definitely starting from nothing; I had virtually no following or presence in the area. I mailed some postcards out and offered a lot of free classes that first season to gain momentum.”

Sara had a five-year plan, and she knew what kind of yoga studio she wanted to create—warm and mellow, a “welcoming and reliable resource for students to explore yoga, create a personal practice, and connect with each other.” That original location was, she says, turnkey perfection. Charming and centrally

located, High Falls had no yoga classes at the time. “We looked at the demographics and my father said ‘If you’ve got people that want to drive 15 to 30 minutes for yoga, I think you’ve got a shot.’ Knowing how spread out everything is here, how everyone drives to get anywhere, I had a hunch it would work.” Her hunch turned out to be accurate, and her instincts pitch-perfect as far as local yoga fans were concerned.

Now relocated to the heart of Stone Ridge and drawing in 80 to 100 new customers a month, Sara and Whole Sky Yoga’s 14 other teachers offer 40 weekly classes geared to all skill levels and many styles. “We get goodnatured, kind-hearted women and men aged 14 to 75, from all over Ulster County and beyond, with an interest in personal health, spirituality, selfdevelopment, community, and, of

opportunities, more variety, more services. I’m starting to add deeper learning opportunities in yoga and yoga philosophy for members, as part of their membership.” Sara is currently studying for her certification in yoga therapy and plans to add it to the roster soon.

“For me it's all about deepening the quality and quantity so that it’s convenient and accommodates

A Yoga Alliance-approved, 200-hour teacher training course is currently in its first year. “We’ve got a wonderful first group of trainees to work with,” says Sara. “Trainees receive unlimited yoga at WSY for the year of the training. We look forward to fine-tuning this program and offering it every year.”

their lives, their projects, new jobs, kids, grandkids, all of it. It warms my heart that they come to Whole Sky and get something positive enough that they come back year after year. I have dozens of long-term students who’ve been a huge part of the growth and evolution of the studio. To me, that’s priceless,” Sara says.

Besides teaching seven classes a week herself, the mom of three (ages 5, 3, and 1) handles marketing strategy and implementation, website updates, project management, social media, programing classes and workshops, and more. “I have one dear woman, Kelly, who supports my admin duties. There’s not a ton of leisure time in my life right now,” she says. “But doing what I love is a blessing. I thrive with routine; I tackle one thing at a time and get goals accomplished little by little. Days sort of flow by from one task to the next. When my kids go to bed, I often work on projects and tasks related to my business and teaching.

“I actually love the business end almost as much as teaching—I love the balance of being challenged physically, creatively, and strategically, on so many levels. I’m constantly learning. Every day I get to be creative and share with others this practice that has impacted my own life so profoundly. I’ve created this vehicle that allows me to follow my calling and find meaning and purpose in life. What more could I ask for?”

“I love sitting at the front desk checking people in. It brings me joy to hear about

Real Estate

home buying and selling by barbara reina

The winter months continue to be a busy season for home sales in this thriving Hudson Valley market. That’s good news for both home buyers and sellers. Whether you're on the hunt for that upstate dream home,

looking for an investment property, or moving to a new area, here are some key tips to keep in mind from Steven Domber, President of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Hudson Valley Properties.

142

HOME s e l l i n g a h o m e i n t h e h u d s o n va l l e y

It’s a seller’s market for Hudson Valley homes in the median price range of $280,000 to $400,000 that are in good condition with a scenic location. • Price it right. “Good pricing is one of the best strategies that people have to pay attention to if they are going to get the best pricing for their home and sell it in the quickest amount of time,” says Steve. He adds that many homeowners make the mistake of listing at a high price, thinking they can chase the market down. “They feel it gives them more negotiating room, but it really does just the opposite.”

• Stage a home for sale. “Declutter and stage it. Rip up smelly or bad carpeting and replace it. Do some painting,” says Steve. “Heed the advice of your realtor. A good realtor can bring in a team of staging or other consultants to help you get the best bang for your buck.”

visitvortex.com

• Photography is everything. Steve says that professional photos and videos of your home attract the attention of buyers, while amateur photography can have an adverse effect. “It’s important how you show the house on the internet. It needs to be done well. You need professional photography and—if you are going to use videos—professional videos.”

• People are buying homes year-round. “In a good, healthy market as we have now, people are buying homes yearround because there is more of a sense of urgency to pounce when the right home comes up; nobody cares if it’s in the middle of January,” says Steve. • Get out there and look. “Since they’re not lasting long on the market, you want to get out there and look at homes quickly,” advises Steve. “Chances are, if it’s a great property, it won’t be there the following week.” • Be a qualified buyer. Steve says that being a qualified buyer gives you the competitive edge in buying your dream home. “You’re always a better buyer if you go in with a prequalification so the seller knows you are pre-approved for a certain mortgage amount.”

As the mid-Hudson Valley's leading real estate company for 26 consecutive years, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Hudson Valley Properties serves buyers, sellers, and investors in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Westchester, Ulster, and Columbia counties.
