THIS SEASON

A

utumn in the Hudson Valley is a cornucopia of wonders. The usual suspects—superb scenery, fab retail, fascinating museums, hot live music—are still in the lineup, but they’re joined, and in some cases transformed, by the season’s fine crisp breezes and swaths of red, gold, and orange forest.

Catch your autumn highlights while they last. Soon enough, it’ll be time for ski weekends and puffy coats. Right now, it’s harvest time: time to be thankful for the bounty, human and otherwise, that fills these hills and river towns with so much splendor. Here, then, are some treats not to be missed.

Hudson River Cruises

There are various methods that work well here. Total leaf immersion, otherwise known as a walk in the woods, is highly recommended; you’ll be breathing in the clean scent of the leaves’ grand finale with every breath, and likely see some critters scampering around stocking their larders. We advise a trail that climbs to a panoramic view. Get tips at the Hinchey Catskills Visitor Center or the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center. Alternatively, you can do a whole lot of peeping from the comfort of your car. Here again, panoramas are the thing. Try Rt. 44/55 (aka Minnewaska Trail) or Rt. 28 West out of Kingston. A third possibility, and a great one: Take a sightseeing cruise on the Hudson and revel in the glories of both shores. Can’t decide? You could probably squeeze two or even three options into a single weekend, with a bang-up feast/picnic or two in between.

s e n s at i o n s Speaking of immersion, those leaf-peeping hikes can leave you aesthetically sated but achy, and we do get chill breezes in these parts come autumn. Refresh and rejuvenate with a treatment at one of our five-star, eco-friendly spas. Your mind and body will thank you. Why not go all in and try a flotation tank? The reviews are fabulous. Harvest season means our farmers are rejoicing. This is pretty much true no matter what kind of season they’ve had, because the crops are in and farmers are about to get a bit of (comparative) downtime between harvest and planting. You’ll find corn mazes, live music, and amazing soups and fresh-baked pies abounding. The immersive version of harvest season fun, of course, is to do some harvesting yourself. Get your comfy shoes on and head out among the trees or vines to pick your own apples or pumpkins. It all tastes better when you know exactly where it came from and can thank the plant in person. 28

s ta r gazing

Clear, crisp autumn nights are perfect for this type of fun, refreshingly brisk but not so cold that a late outdoor evening becomes an endurance test. Wear a cozy sweater and bring a pair of binoculars -there are many spots around here where the lights of civilization don’t drown out the skies’ symphonic perfection. Pairs extremely well with a fire-pit evening and that hard cider you simply could not resist bringing home.

Apple harvest time is cider-drinking time. By the glass, can, or growler, you’ll find the indefatigable creativity of our local cideries in full roar, many with pizza ovens ablaze and live entertainment overlooking the orchards. Whether you like it hard, really hard, or sweetly virginal, the Hudson Valley has historically ruled, rocked, and rolled the world of cider production—and baby, we’re back.

Thirsting to get to know the real Hudson Valley? If you’re a wine and spirits lover, it’s hard to imagine a better way to

enjoy our splendid scenery, warm welcome, and superb flavors than a taste along the Shawangunk Wine Trail.

visitvortex.com

The trail is heir to 300 years of historic expertise; the oldest member winery, Brotherhood in Washingtonville, is also the oldest continuously operating winery in America. Other wineries have come into being as a new generation discovered and built upon a grandparent’s knack for the grape. And what may seem new—cideries and distilleries— shares in that same historic lineage, being a resurgence of long-ago practices. “Autumn at the wineries is a celebration of harvest,” says Jude DeFalco, the trail ’s operations manager, “with fruit picking, f ire pits, music… so many fun things. And the wineries are all on large properties with great views, so you really can’t go wrong.”

38

The round trip along the Shawangunk Wine Trail is 85 miles, and DeFalco suggests picking a cluster of wineries—like a bunch of ripened grapes—to visit in a day or weekend, the better to savor each flavor. If you’d rather have someone else do the driving, so you can sip to your heart’s content, there are seven different limousine companies with Wine Trail expertise—and one, vip winery vacations, that will get you a wine expert driver for your own car: vipwineryvacations.com To guide you in your planning, here is a taste of what to expect at each: Wineries are listed in alphabetical order, and the Shawangunk Wine Trail website (shawangunkwinetrail. com) offers a handy map to your closest cluster.

jack-o-lantern How Jack Got His Name by anne pyburn craig

s the days of autumn shorten and the air begins to nip toward the end of October, cheery orange gourds take center stage at our local farm stands and u-pick fields and pop up on many a local porch. Parents teach their children the craft they learned as children themselves: draw the

face on the pumpkin’s skin, cut a handy lid from the top (who doesn’t remember the thrill of finally being big enough to hold the knife?) and scoop out the slippery innards before finally carving that face—be it a toothy grin or a menacing scowl—and adding a tea-light inside for full effect.

Why do we do this?

Well, it’s fun. But it’s certainly not the most logical thing in the world to do with a pumpkin. The American continent has grown pumpkins for thousands of years, and people sensibly used them as a food source. The fruit is low in calories and rich in vitamin A and antioxidants, not to mention versatile, lending itself to soups, pies, cakes, and pancakes, as well as being delicious roasted. (There is also pumpkin spice, a controversy which we decidedly are not going to touch.) But spooky lanterns? OK, the Maoris did start using gourds for lighting around 700 years ago. Still, faces? The answers lie in Ireland where, legend has it, a layabout thief named Stingy Jack thought he could outwit the Devil. Now, the Devil could change

shapes, so after he and Jack had a drink together, Jack prevailed upon him to transform into a coin to pay the pub tab. Once he had the coin in hand, Stingy Jack popped it into his pocket next to a silver cross, keeping the Devil in coin form until he had his strategy ready: In return for his freedom, the Devil would have to promise not to take Jack’s soul. The following year, Jack thought he’d bested the Devil again. “Look at that yummy fruit,” said Jack. “I bet you could climb up there and get it for us in two shakes.” Up went the Devil, whereupon Jack implemented this year’s plan: he carved a cross into the tree and wouldn’t let the Devil come back down till he’d promised to leave Jack be, treacherous thieving habits and all, for ten years.

Pumpkins make dandy Jack-o-lanterns, whether you’re lighting your porch for the wandering candy-gatherers of Hallowe’en (Samhain, in Celtic history) or warding off the spirits from Purgatory. 78

Stingy Jack may still be out there somewhere. He may have immigrated here for a larger landscape to wander. Better safe than sorry—and there’s nothing quite like the festive glow his namesake will bring to your seasonal decor. But apparently Jack must have annoyed someone besides the Devil along the way, because—plot twist!—God wouldn’t let him into Heaven, and he’d already gotten himself banned from Hell (No word on the pub where he pulled the original scam). Thus was Stingy Jack sentenced to roam the Irish moors forevermore, carrying a burning coal inside a carved-out turnip as his light, becoming Jacko’the-Lantern.

If you have never seen what a carved-out turnip looks like with a light inside, rest assured they are 1,000 times more horrific than our modern pumpkin versions, with a decidedly zombie-esque flair. Pumpkins are also far easier to hollow out and carve, of course, so some of the results may relate to the carver’s mood by the time they were done hacking at that turnip. Be that as it may, it was a pumpkin Jack-o-lantern that Washington Irving imagined his Headless Horseman

hurling at Ichabod Crane in 1820. Pumpkins make dandy Jack-o-lanterns, whether you’re lighting your porch for the wandering candy-gatherers of Hallowe’en (Samhain, in Celtic history) or warding off the spirits from Purgatory. (And you can dry and toast the seeds into an amazing snack.) The designs carved into them every year are limited only by the imagination of the carvers. For a truly im79

pressive array, we recommend a Hallowe’en visit to The Bakery in New Paltz, where the Night of 100 Pumpkins carving contest has been a beloved tradition since 1990. And after all, you never know: Stingy Jack may still be out there somewhere. He may have immigrated here for a larger landscape to wander. Better safe than sorry—and there’s nothing quite like the festive glow his namesake will bring to your seasonal decor.

You can eat the seeds from any pumpkin variety. Some seeds are quite large, and others are very small. Some have really thick hulls. There are some varieties, however, that are especially good for toasted pumpkin seeds. Kakai seeds are completely hull-less. How cool is that?! 1. Rinse pumpkin seeds under cold water and pick out the pulp and strings. (This is easiest just after you’ve removed the seeds from the pumpkin, before the pulp has dried.) 2. Place the pumpkin seeds in a single layer on an oiled baking sheet, stirring to coat. If you prefer, omit the oil and coat with nonstick cooking spray. 3. Sprinkle with salt and bake at 325˚ F until toasted, about 25 minutes, checking and stirring after 10 minutes. 4. Let cool and store in an air-tight container.

fter the closing of their beloved Duo Bistro, foodies in Uptown Kingston were delighted to find that a worthy successor had arisen: Grainne (pronounced “gren-yah”), named for the legendary Irishwoman pirate also known as Grace O’Malley, swiftly became a wellspring of great flavors.

Jennifer Cruz says that’s the goal in running her bistro and market. “I want it to be the kind of place that people can feel comfortable hanging around, feel welcomed, and receive excellent food and really good service,” she says. “Our food seems to be

And what I hear from our guests is that they feel good once they come in. She realized rapidly that, along with gorgeous scenery and lovely humans, life upstate eliminated what had been a source of serious stress. “I can go to my car, in my driveway, and go to my destination and park in the lot. I haven’t circled a block for a parking space in forever. Living in the Upper West Side, I circled many a block, and alternate side parking was a major hassle. Driveways are so very nice!” She also followed her muse. “As my marriage ended I needed a new career. I had been a baker all my life— made cheesecake with my mother when I was 5, was the Martha Stewart wannabe when I was 20—so I went to the CIA [Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park] and studied Baking and Pastry. I’ve been in restaurants since I was 16, which is a long time ago! A friend offered financial support to start the business when I lost my job to Covid, and I took the opportunity.”

“We are a very close team. We truly like and appreciate each other. I come in with a positive attitude every day—or I try to. And working with people I like and respect makes that easy. ” - Jennifer Cruz, owner, Grainne Her former employer’s loss is Kingston’s gain, and she’s loving being called “Boss Lady” by the cook—and leading a happy crew. “We are a very close team,” Jennifer says. “We truly like and appreciate each other. I come in with a positive attitude every day—or I try to. And working with people I like and respect makes that easy. We joke around a lot. Some restaurant environments can be really toxic, and we make sure that doesn’t happen here. We focus on what people ‘do well and good,’ rather than on the problems. Praise the team to success—it keeps us all positive and motivated.”

particularly on the weekends, loads of folks from the city,” Jennifer says. “We have had a growing group of regulars almost since we opened. It’s a really diverse group, which keeps life interesting. We try to make everyone feel well taken care of. All of the staff really care that our guests enjoy their time here.”

That positive vibe translates to happy customers, and Jennifer and her crew love nothing more than pleasing each one. “I have the nicest guests ever! Lots of folks from this area, but,

According to her daughter (who ought to know), the Mom energy is strong in this one. So it’s not surprising that “Boss Lady” takes on a lot of roles as needed. “I’m chief cook and

bottle washer!” she says. “Kidding, sort of! I did most of the pastry work, until I hired a wonderful recent CIA grad. Now she does the pastry work, possibly better than I do. I’m serving while we work to hire staff. I do dishes... paint... clean bathrooms... Basically, whatever needs to get done.” A satisfied guest is her bliss. “I love seeing my guests enjoy their meal,” she says. “They love the food. I enjoy coming up with new foods to serve. We’ve been called a comfort food bistro, and I like that. Excellent food that makes you feel good. With a full-service bakery... and someday a bar!” At this writing, Grainne’s liquor license is expected any day, and Jennifer’s excited about adding bottomless Mimosas to the joys of a Grainne brunch. And the market side will soon be seeing new items as well.

“We’re adding bitters and shrubs, soaps, seasonings, and herbs, honey, maple syrup, tea blends. I’m searching for teapots and cups as well as tea towels and handmade trinkets. We’ll make our own granola, crackers, and dog biscuits. Things might cycle and change as seasons and discoveries change, but I’m keeping it local.” Opening a restaurant in late 2020 required a thoughtful spirit. “We had a little more to consider while getting open, and getting up and running has taken a bit longer,” Jennifer says. “We have made every effort to keep our guests safe and feeling comfortable. It was really encouraging when guests told me that this was the first place they had eaten in a year. It warmed my heart that they felt comfortable here....I am expressing my creativity. I am learning new things every day. This is the dream.”

at Benedictine Hospital (now part of Health Alliance) and joined Gabe at the shop when she retired, shortly after it opened. Back then, midtown Kingston was not a hot spot for a new business— especially a coffee shop in the years before Starbucks revolutionized the scene. Through their dedication to coffee, their research of the area, and much hard work renovating the building, they built a business that has thrived and will hopefully continue to do so for years to come.” Britt grew up in the Albany area, attended Siena College, and made her way to Kingston after a stop in Saugerties. Melissa, a Dutchess County native, left to pursue a few degrees in music and returned over a decade ago. Both found themselves working at Monkey Joe for a combined 17 years and loving it.

“We meet so many people....Just hearing their stories, their worries, their small joys, watching their lives grow and unfold, is what really creates the character of this space.” - Britt Morton, co-owner, Monkey Joe Roasting Co.

“Owning a coffee roasting business was not ever the plan,” says Britt. “But the options were to dust off our resumes and work for someone who didn’t understand, know, or love the business and its customers, or put on our big-girl pants and buy our jobs. It probably helped that we had been happy to show up to ‘work’ every morning—we still are!—and knew to an extent what we were getting into, having been managing the day-to-day operations of the

shop for many years. And we both now live within two miles of the shop, which makes for a nice commute on those snowy winter mornings.”

fee’s hot and fragrant and the welcome’s warm. Britt and Melissa have watched and nurtured local coffee culture from its tender beginnings.

Snowy winter mornings in Kingston and beyond are warmed by Monkey Joe’s roasts: The business supplies numerous restaurants and markets in the Hudson Valley. And there’s no such thing as the wrong kind of morning for a place like this, where the cof-

espresso was on sale. Even up to five years ago, cold brew coffee was a full-on explanation and conversation. Now people confidently walk in and order four. It’s been fun to watch the progression on that front and how it has been reflected in Kingston’s coffee culture.” But no matter how fancy things get,

Monkey Joe is rooted in the basic bean. “If you ask us, we always recommend a cup of coffee!” says Britt. “It’s a simple answer, but we roast every week, so you are getting a cup of coffee that is super fresh and our passion. Personally, we’ve been on an Americano kick the past year—shots of our delicious, super-secret house espresso with water, hot or iced. It’s

time goes on….Thankfully, our supply chain and costs have not been affected. It may help that we try to shop locally and buy American-made products with the exception of our green coffee beans, which results in a smaller ecological footprint and keeps our neighbors in business.” Staffing through the pandemic has been tough, but Britt and Melissa—alone at the counter—and roaster Tom Delooza ensured that no Kingstonian or casual visitor need face quarantine un-caffeinated, determinedly showing up for their people— who, Britt says, are the best part of the brew. “We

meet so many people: from down the street, from across the country, children of people who used to be regulars, people who have moved away and still order coffee off our website. Just hearing their stories, their worries, their small joys, watching their lives grow and unfold, is what really creates the character of this space. We’ve become almost an institution in Kingston, and there are now people who have never known this spot on Broadway to not have Monkey Joe Roasting Company, to not have that toasty smell of roasting coffee wafting each week...For us, to be part of that is just really wonderful.”

So stop in, meet the monkeys, and order up a cuppa whatever joe strikes your fancy. They’re there for you, sustainably delicious and sticking to a simple time-tested formula. “As for our business philosophy,” says Melissa, “we roast it, you buy it, and as always, ‘Taste No Evil.’”

ambience and the art. They also love the story of my leaving the corporate world for a passion project. And I do, on occasion, bring in new artists if I fall in love with something and just have to have it in the gallery! So there is newness on offer, plus a great story behind the business and its distinctly personal touch. For instance, my mother is a fellow artist. She specializes in fiber art, a very hot trend in the art world at the moment, and I recently started featuring her work. She was my top-selling artist for May!” Being the mistress of her own destiny is a multifaceted challenge. “I am a one-man band and do it all, from curating shows and acting as ‘shop-girl’ to building the website and managing social media. I hope to get an intern at some point, but for now I’m happy to be in the gallery as much as possible so I can learn the business. I am also a full-time artist, working in a variety of media, from painting to illustration. And I’m available to do art consulting on design projects in the area for hotels, restaurants, homes, and so on. I can

be contacted directly through the gallery website. My ambition is to help people discover accessible art by upstate talent that might otherwise go unnoticed.” The lack of staff doesn’t mean she’s entirely alone at quiet moments, whether in the gallery or at her refuge in Hurley. “I come to work every day with my best friend, a beagle named Vladimir. He is the gallery mascot, the gentlest and sweetest little dog who loves greeting customers of all ages...On my own time, I confess to being a homebody. My favorite moment is sunset on the deck with Vlad and friends, a glass of cold rosé in hand, good tunes on the outdoor speakers, a roaring fire pit and some ghost stories as the sky darkens while the forest starts to sing its evensong.”

Meet the Owner

129

“Each day is a unique experience in knowing we are helping members of our community discover something about an item they did not previously know.” - Jay C. Grutman, owner, Rhinebeck Antique Emporium

Lovers of antiques probably already know that the Hudson Valley holds abundant treasures. If you haven’t happened upon it, though, you absolutely must plan a voyage of discovery to the mother lode: the Rhinebeck Antique Emporium, the region’s largest venue for antiques, appraisals, and auctions. Proprietor and president Jay C. Grutman grew up in Larchmont on Long Island Sound, immersed in the beauty of fine old things. “Several generations of my family have been avid collectors of 18th-century furniture, and a close family friend owned Astor Galler130

ies in Manhattan and a gallery in Mamaroneck where I worked part time,” he says. “As an undergraduate at Sarah Lawrence, I had an internship working on the Channel 13 auction.” Jay went to Bard College for grad school, and fell in love with the beauty, history, and character of the Rhinebeck area. “I moved to Newport, Rhode Island after college, but I always hoped to return to Rhinebeck,” he says. A career in multinational commercial real estate development nurtured the business savvy that would stand him in good stead

Forty-plus expert dealers, several of whom have been involved since the Emporium’s opening nine years ago, curate arrays of all things old and elegant. when he decided to begin his entrepreneurial venture. But the thing that actually led him to purchase the property that would become the Emporium was his passion for antique cars. “After the completion of our home in Rhinebeck I passed a real estate auction sign at what had been a John Deere dealership. I am an avid antique car collector, so I pulled over, looked

over the property, and thought it would make a good location to store some of my cars. At the auction I was the successful bidder. That was in mid-October of 2011; during that winter, while having the property remodeled, I decided it was better suited to a state-of-the-art antique center and auction gallery.”

And what a gallery it is. Forty-plus expert dealers, several of whom have been involved since the Emporium’s opening nine years ago (there’s a waiting list), curate arrays of all things old and elegant: furniture, collectibles of all sorts, antique and costume jewelry, silver, porcelain, paintings, oriental rugs, and tapestries.

131

“We enjoy meeting like-minded people. Our personal attention to detail, and the knowledge base we can access when required to assist our clients, make the Emporium stand out.” - Jay C. Grutman, owner, Rhinebeck Antique Emporium

“The experience I accumulated growing up played a large part in how I felt things should be operated,” Jay says. “When the Antique Center was designed, I felt it should have the feel of walking through a high-end antique show: no clutter, wide walkways, and a broad spectrum of quality items.” Whether you’re an experienced collector, a novice, or just curious, you’ll be welcome. “We endeavor to offer the best values while maintaining a high level of quality service,” says Jay. “We enjoy meeting like-minded people. Our personal attention to detail, and the knowledge base we can access when required to assist our clients, make

132

the Emporium stand out. Each day is a unique experience in knowing we are helping members of our community discover something about an item they did not previously know.” Along with retail sales, Jay provides appraisal, repair, and auction services in a spirit informed by the Golden Rule. “Always treat customers the way you hope you are treated when dealing with personal issues such as an estate liquidation or appraisal of family heirlooms,” Jay says. “Some of the larger NYC galleries have a sort of generic feel; you won’t find that here. We take joy in helping you discover a hid-

den treasure. We have the freedom and time to respond to each client’s individual needs.” The Emporium’s location, between Rhinebeck and Hyde Park, could hardly be better for those with a reverence for history—an antique-shopping venture pairs well with a visit to the Roosevelt or Vanderbilt mansions and a meal at the Culinary Institute of America in nearby Hyde Park. For Jay, who spends time at his homes in Rhode Island and Florida as well as in Rhinebeck, it’s a special place. “I love the beauti-

ful open space, the Hudson River, and the wonderful, interesting people who call the Hudson Valley home,” he says. Maybe someday Jay will get his hands on his dream car: a vintage boattail Duesenberg to round out his collection of mostly British classics. For now, he loves time on the water on the 40foot Alden motorsailer he spent four years restoring. “Stepping aboard is like stepping back in time,” he says. “It has amazing features. The bathroom sink is in the shape of an octopus.”

Now that autumn is here, it’s time to give your garden that last little push prior to putting it to bed for winter. Whether you’re a die-hard gardener, or your thumb is more of a faded chartreuse, there are plenty of rewarding tasks to do before the snow starts to fly.

One of the easiest ways to squeeze out a few extra weeks of bloom is to plant some late-season flowers. Here are some good choices: MUMS and ASTERS Though both are perennials (at least in general terms), it’s simple to treat them like annuals for use in containers and for plugging gaps in gardens and borders. If you do intend to treat them as true perennials in the garden, please note that the 10-inch tall aster you purchase in the fall can morph into an enormous plant the following year. As for the mums, they too can come back far larger than expected, and should also be pinched back once or twice during the following growing season to prevent them from blooming too early or from becoming too leggy. PANSIES Low-growing, showy, and a bit whimsical, pansies are available in some of the season’s most bewitching colors, including orange, purple, burgundy, and even black. Indeed, Monet was mad for black pansies and planted great swathes of them in his gardens at Giverny.

138

garden clean-up do’s and don’ts

Cleaning up your garden at the end of the growing season helps prevent disease and ensures a good head start for the spring. A fall clean-up does not

These will turn lovely shades of gold and russet, providing color, movement, and even a musical rustling sound throughout the winter.

Fall is also an ideal time to DO ANY NEEDED TRIMMING OR PRUNING, as the branch structure of trees and shrubs is most evident

necessarily mean that the garden should resemble a moonscape afterwards. Leave certain perennials and grasses standing that provide visual interest and food for wildlife. Among the perennials to leave standing for their interesting seed heads are RUDBECKIA (black-eyed Susan) and sedums such as AUTUMN JOY. In addition, you should also consider leaving DECORATIVE GRASSES standing.

Except for the plants described above, you should REMOVE SPENT ANNUALS and CUT DOWN ANY PERENNIALS that look shabby as part of your fall cleanup. Most of these go into the compost pile; however, do not add any plant material to your compost pile (at least if you intend to use the compost) that is diseased.

after the leaf fall. Do not, however, trim forsythia or other spring-blooming shrubs at this time (except for damaged or dead branches), as you will be removing the spring blooms. This is also not the right time to shape boxwoods or other dense shrubs in hedges, as this might encourage late-season growth that will only be killed by the coming frosts. 139

Fall is a great time to PLANT TREES AND SHRUBS, provided that you do so early enough in the season: Allow six to eight weeks for them to become established prior to the ground freezing. On this note, one word of caution: Many nurseries offer excellent sales this time of year, but beware of purchasing trees and shrubs after the leaf fall, as it is difficult to judge the specimen’s health without the leaves being present.

140

t

o n l e av e s a n d m u l c h

After the garden is tidied up, now is an excellent time to ADD A LAYER OF MULCH. It seldom is a bad time to add mulch, as it provides so many benefits. During the winter, mulch helps to insulate roots from the winter’s chill as well as prevent excessive moisture loss from drying winds if the snow cover is lacking.

REMOVE LEAF LITTER FROM GARDEN BEDS unless it is in a very naturalized, woodland garden setting. Fallen leaves do make a great mulch, provided they are shredded first. If whole leaves are left to rot where they fall, they form dense, damp mats that do not readily break down and play host to molds, fungus, and slugs.

141

It goes without saying that fall is the time to PLANT SPRING-FLOWERING BULBS. Of the many types of bulbs available, you may wish to avoid tulips, as they tend to poop-out after a few years and everything from voles and squirrels to deer find both their blooms and bulbs delectable. Instead, plant loads of DAFFODILS and ALLIUMS (decorative onions). These are untroubled by pests and put on a reliably smashing show each spring. Autumn is also a good time to cover the trunks of young trees

142

u

with one of the many commercially available types of TREE WRAP. This process protects trees from developing splits or cracks in their bark caused by rapid temperature fluctuations. Finally, fall is a great time to begin planning for next season. No doubt, you are all looking forward to curling up in front of the fire with a cup of hot cocoa and a few good gardening books, magazines, and seed catalogues. NOW GO OUT AND PLANT SOMETHING—WHILE YOU STILL CAN.
