fun things to do by anne pyburn craig

visitvortex.com

Summer is the time to get out and make those lifelong memories, and the possibilities for adventure around the Hudson Valley are many and varied: glide, freefall, wander, splash, dance, and get you some summertime fun. Here are nine of our favorites to get you started.

One could easily spend a summer’s worth of weekends exploring the miles of trails and carriage roads maintained by Mohonk Preserve. Four trailheads unlock epic views, historic ruins, and crystal creeks. There’s a smart, fascinating welcome center, and hikes for everyone from the stroller set to the mountain goats. Hiking maps and trail info for the Catskill Park can be found at the Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Interpretive Center on Route 28.

Before there was a craft beverage revolution, there was a historic and growing culture of award-winning Hudson Valley wineries, and they’ve only gotten better with age. The Shawangunk Wine Trail strings together fifteen exceptional small-to-medium wineries along the glorious blue highways and backroads. Book your ride with one of their arsenal of car companies and taste to your heart’s content.

When it comes to performances, there’s something for everyone in the Hudson Valley. Check out the eclectic Music on Market series in Ellenville, presented by the Music Institute of Sullivan and Ulster Counties. Also in Ellenville is Shadowland Stages, where you can see great live professional theatre. Or take in a concert at Bethel Woods in the natural amphitheatre on the grounds of the original Woodstock Music & Art Fair. This year they are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic 1969 festival with perfomances by several big-name artists.

The Dutchess County Fair (August 20–25) is vast, with 1,000 exhibitors, 12 acres of livestock, a living history section, and a SporkRun app game in which food vendors vie for your People’s Choice vote. The Ulster County Fair (July 30–August 4) is a classic community party with great pay-one-price and carload deals. The Woodstock–New Paltz Art & Crafts Fair, held every Memorial and Labor Day weekend, is a juried gathering of hundreds of fine makers of every sort of wonderful thing.

of the hudson valley

A thunderstorm rolling through on a warm evening brings a familiar, relaxing rumble of summer in the Hudson Valley, and the cooling rain that comes with it breathes life back into some of the best natural attractions we have in the region: waterfalls. You can often hear that same rumble before you reach a waterfall, although not all waterfalls are created equal—the weather and

@ da n n y w i l d 1 1

seasons can play a big role in whether or not it’s a good time to hike to these scenic spots. Surging waterfalls in spring can sometimes look a lot different in the summer, but, really, there's never a bad time to go chase waterfalls. The Hudson Valley has a bunch of accessible falls, so check the forecast, grab your dog or friend (or both), and head out to explore one of the region's famous (or lesser-known) waterfalls this summer.

New York City's vast water supply system funnels fresh water from all over the Hudson Valley, thanks in part to this impressive dam at the Croton Reservoir in Westchester County. The original dam was built in 1892, and a visit to Croton Gorge Park allows visitors views of the cascading water and natural waterfall flowing down from the reservoir. A bridge over the waterfall at the top of the dam provides a dramatic view and is a fantastic spot to photograph the sunrise.

This is another gem of the Catskills that's viewable from the road and requires very little hiking to enjoy. This 46-foot waterfall (one of many in the state and region called "Buttermilk") is just off Route 42, also called Peekamoose Road, just northeast of the Rondout Reservoir. There's a small dirt parking, area and you'll spot the creek on Google Maps as "Buttermilk Falls Brook." This spot is a photographer's dream with its many rocks, cascades, shady trees, and easy access.

Awosting is one of the most popular spots to visit on a day trip to Minnewaska, a state park in the Shawangunk Mountains, just west of New Paltz. The 60-foot waterfall is an easy 15 to 20 minute walk down the trail from the main entrance to the park. Awosting Falls is fed by Peters Kill, a mountain stream that meanders through the Gunks from Lake Awosting, about four

miles away. Visitors can park at the Awosting lot near the main entrance of the park and walk back toward the road to connect to the main carriage road trail— take it to the edge of the cliff at the top of this waterfall and enjoy the view looking down (take note of the very old pitch pine trees here). Then, continue down the trail for a few minutes to the bottom. If the water

level is low enough, you can cross the narrow stream and get a different perspective of the waterfall for your photographs. The shady, quiet trail below the waterfall also continues along the water—perfect for a quick, scenic hike. Minnewaska charges a $10 parking fee. Visitors can also drive up to the lake and enjoy the park's trails, cliffs, swimming areas, and views. 25

Locally known as Shaft 2A, Stony Kill is really worth your time following the fantastic trail work and renovations that were recently installed by the state. This 90-foot waterfall plunges straight down to a pool and flows into a rocky creek, and now it's easier than ever to enjoy the sounds and cool mist. A $340,000 construction project in 2017 allowed a local trail-building company (Tahawus Trails) to artfully create a new path through the area, complete with two wooden bridges, a viewing platform, and natural stairs made from the iconic white rocks of the Gunks. The first footbridge over the creek provides an Instagram-ready composition of the waterfall and cascading stream below. Pack a lunch and hike up above the falls for another smaller waterfall. Finding this spot is the toughest part: if coming from New Paltz, drive past the main Minnewaska park entrance and down the winding road to the other side of the ridge until you see Rock Haven Road on the left. Take that to Shaft 2A Road and park at the end on the side, before you reach the metal gate. The trail here leads you through a vast, open space that previously existed as a rock quarry—it's now part of Minnewaska and partially controlled by New York City's water commissioner. There's no fee to park here.

This 260-foot, two-tier waterfall is a classic scene of the Hudson Valley, and has inspired artists, painters, poets, and visitors for decades. Recent trail improvements have made Kaaterskill—the tallest waterfall in the state— even more accessible and less dangerous, and include a wheelchairaccessible gravel path to an overlook platform near the top. Most hikers park in the small lot along Route 23A and walk back toward the main trailhead, which takes you past Bastion Falls and up to the bottom of the lower falls. The viewing platform near the top has a nearby parking lot and short trail to follow. There is no fee to park.

This relatively small but scenic waterfall is perfect for a day trip from New York City. A small, free parking lot for the nearby Constitution Marsh (park only in designated spots to avoid a ticket) allows visitors to walk up the road to the left to reach a short trail down below a bridge that leads to the waterfall. Afterward, head down the road to the Hudson River and enjoy Instagramable views of the Hudson Highlands at the marsh's boardwalks. Grab lunch in Cold Spring or head over the bridge to Bear Mountain State Park for sunset at the lake or Perkins Tower. 27

This 180-foot waterfall flows down the side of a rocky cliff in the Gunks, although getting to it requires a much longer hike than Awosting and Stony Kill, and is best viewed from the top. From the Sam’s Point Trailhead on Sam’s Point Road, follow the 8.3-mile long Verkeerderkill Falls trail loop.

Cool off and stand under the falling water of this small waterfall, but only go if you're on your way out to Lake Awosting and there's been enough rain to keep this one flowing. A footpath off the main carriage road just before you reach the lake will take you here—just watch out for poison ivy.

The Platte Clove in the Catskills is known for its canyon-like scenery, including this 70-foot waterfall at the end of a one-mile hike from a DEC parking area on Platte Clove Road. As many hikers have warned, it is important to stay on the trail here and not wander off, due to the extremely dangerous, steep cliffs.

Bastion Falls is viewable right from the road, making it a good option for those who’d rather not hike up to Kaaterskill, but still want to see a nice waterfall before grabbing lunch in Palenville or Woodstock. Visitors will drive around the curve on Route 23A and see the falls, and you can park in the lot just up the road and walk back for a closer look. 29

p h o to g r a p h y t i p s :

Photographing the Falls: If your goal is to photograph a waterfall, consider adding a circular polarizing filter for your camera—it will help with water surface glare and clarity. A neutral density filter is also helpful in creating those silky, soft long exposures when paired with a tripod. Don't have a fancy camera? Your iPhone can do the job, too: enable live mode (the yellow circle at the top of your camera screen) and snap a photo; when viewing the image afterward, swipe up and select the "long exposure" option on your iPhone to get a similar effect. Waterfalls are best photographed on cloudy days or in the shade.

General Guidelines: Be mindful of park fees, parking regulations, and staying on marked trails to avoid eroding the terrain and disturbing wildlife, such as snakes. Respect the land and keep it clean: be sure to carry out any items you bring in, like water bottles or food wrappers. It's our responsibility to keep these beautiful spots clean and natural. 30

Waterfalls in Other Parts of New York: If you're up for a longer adventure, consider a trip to Watkins Glen and Ithaca, in the Finger Lakes region of New York, famous for its many gorges and waterfalls, including the picturesque Taughannock Falls.

fishing with kids 101 by anne pyburn craig

Outdoors

35

O

ne of the best ways to get outdoors with your kids this summer, and spend quality time together while developing a new

skill, is to take them fishing. Besides being fun, fishing encourages patience, with the payoff of landing that first fish, and a good catch can even provide dinner.

Some truly wonderful conversations can develop while spending time together at the water’s edge, so even if the fishing’s not so great, the bonding time is.

So how do you make that first fishing trip a success, something that you and the kids will be eager to do again? Here are some tips for getting your young anglers off to a good start: 1

b ru s h u p

If you haven’t fished in a while, refresh your knowhow. Takemefishing.org has user-friendly tips on every aspect of the process.

2

g e t yo u r l i c e n s e

Don’t forget to buy a fishing license for everyone over 16 and get up to speed on regulations, limits, and so on. Available by the day, week, or year, licenses can be purchased online, over the phone, or from your nearest issuing agent (see the DEC website at https://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6091. html for the whole scoop). Reservoirs, such as the Ashokan, have additional regulations and require special permits.

3

get the right stuff

Adult fishing tackle is hard for kids to manage; 36

get a simple, kid-sized spincasting setup or a cane pole. Get extra hooks, sinkers, and bobbers so a snag won’t spoil the fun. Use live bait like nightcrawlers or worms to maximize your chances of success. (And a rag or wipes to keep your hands semi-clean.)

4

outdoor basics

Don’t forget the outdoor basics: lightweight layers, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, beverages, snacks. If you’re going to be near water that’s at all deep or fast, include life vests and be sure to use them. And sunglasses will protect everyone, not just from the glare, but also from any errant casts.

5

p i c k yo u r s p o t

An adult’s idea of the perfect fishing trip might be

the bank of a swift trout stream deep in the forest, where said adult may relish the meditative side of fishing and not care about, you know, catching fish; kids, not so much. Ask around, do some Googling, and find the right easy-to-reach shore, dock, or pier in a spot that’s known for bluegill or crappies and/or regularly stocked. You want action.

6

practice

Try a few practice casts in the front yard with just a bobber on the line, so your young anglers can get the feel of it.

7

g o at daw n o r d u s k

Go in the morning or evening, when the fish are more likely to be feeding. Don’t plan on a full day of fishing on their first trip.

8

h e l p t h e yo u n g i n ’

Don’t expect to do any fishing yourself the first time you head out with the kids (or possibly even the second or third time…). You’ll want to concentrate on helping the newbie(s) learn the basics of baiting, casting, watching the bobber, being patient, feeling the line, and landing the catch. Besides, you’re the official photographer.

9

to e at o r n o t to e at

Catch and release? Fry ‘em up for supper? The choice is obviously yours. If you want to eat your catch, make sure there are no advisories against eating fish from that body of water and keep only what you can eat. If you plan to catch and release, a net will help you get enough control to remove the hook without having to yank the fish out of the water. Either way, you can model respect for the environment and our fellow species.

10

h av e f u n !

Toss pebbles in the pond, take a break, and explore. The more fun your young one has the first time out, the better your chances of raising a kid who’ll want to join you again and again. 37

Hudson River Cruises partners with local Kingston restaurants to offer lunch-and-a-cruise and dinnerand-a-cruise packages. “So you can do a 2:30pm cruise and then a three-course feast at Mariner’s, say,” says Kevin. “It makes a really special afternoon.”

Tourists, says manager Kevin Buckel, tend to want to start with the sightseeing tour to get their bearings. But what keeps the locals and repeat visitors coming back again and again are the evening cruises with live music or a DJ for dancing. “We have the complete lineup on the website,” says Kevin. “From June 28 through the end of August, we offer music cruises every other Friday. It’s just one of the best ways to spend a summer evening in the Hudson Valley. Couple that with Dinner at one of the great waterfront restaurants in Rondout Landing and you have a perfect night!

If you’ve got an occasion on the horizon, or want to plan something special for your company, why not charter the Rip Van Winkle and make her yours for the night? “It makes a really memorable venue,” says Kevin. “We take care of setting up the tables and chairs, and the lower deck is a very flexible space. Bring in your caterer and decorator; you’ll find we’re a very friendly and flexible company to work with. We’re all about you having a perfect time, and you really can’t beat the photo opportunities.” 44

Hudson River Cruises has been showing off the river’s beauty since the 1980s; in 2016, the operation was purchased by Charleston Harbor Tours, but there’s still a strong focus on partnering with the community. “We do fundraisers for the Boys and Girls Clubs, and People’s Place” says Kevin. “This community is just so full of great people, and we love being their favorite way to get out on the water. Every trip is a good time.”

Woodstock Farm Sanctuary

t h e g r ay b a r n p h o to s b y r a c h e l c o l l e t

For the past 15 years, Woodstock Farm Sanctuary has been helping to create, as their mission states, “a peaceful world rooted in respect and justice for all living beings.” Through the caretaking of poorly treated farmed animals, outreach to the

public, and active support of veganism, the Sanctuary has become a beacon of goodness in the Hudson Valley, and they enthusiastically welcome all who are interested in visiting with the animals and learning more about the work that they do.

Venture out and explore the Hudson Valley and its sweet little towns, all the while knowing that your money will directly support the Sanctuary’s animal rescue, education, and advocacy work.

For those who wish to support the Sanctuary by becoming members, a new option is available in the form of gorgeous accommodations: The Gray Barn has recently opened on the Sanctuary’s property in High Falls to allow visitors the opportunity to stay overnight and fully experience the magic that the farm has to offer. 52

This modern boutique inn offers five rooms, each with its own en suite bathroom and private entrance. Windows throughout overlook the property and the backdrop of the Shawangunk Mountains. Rooms are well-appointed and spacious, with high-end minimalist décor that allows for full appreciation of the surroundings.

The Gray Barn is located deep in nature, and guest rooms feature their own outdoor terrace that overlook the property’s truly beautiful pastures.

This is truly a heart-opening experience.

While staying at The Gray Barn, you can wake up to a homecooked vegan breakfast, and then continue on to learn about the work of the sanctuary through a guided tour—all of this is included in your stay. Leigh Goldstein, The Gray Barn’s hospitality coordinator, will introduce you to many of the 380 rescued animals onsite—goats, pigs, sheep, ducks, cows, chickens, rabbits, and more—who all have names and are individually cared for and respected. Then feel free to venture out and explore the Hudson Valley and its sweet little towns, all the while knowing that your money will directly support the Sanctuary’s animal rescue, humane education, and advocacy work. Beacon Falls by Rachel Collet.

Hop off the Metro-North at the Beacon Station, or take a drive down Route 9, and you’re in for a day of beautiful sights and artistic encounters that only Beacon can provide. Located in Dutchess County, this Hudson River-side city is home to an abundance of treasures, such as Dia:Beacon, one of the country’s largest contemporary art museums, and the historic Howland Cultural Center, where you might be lucky 60

enough to catch local musicians for a spell or two. Rich with history and jiving with local artists and makers, the charm of Beacon leaves a lasting impression. Whether you’re interested in seeing the sights (of which there are many), or feasting your way down Main Street, this post-industrial landscape has a little something for everyone. Be like a local and walk a mile (or 4.9) in their shoes with this extensive itinerary we have planned.

Mountain Tops Outfitters photos by Rachel Collet.

Looking for the perfect Instagram shot from your trip to Beacon? You better stop over at Mountain Tops Outfitters before going hiking at nearby Mount Beacon or Breakneck Ridge. Get decked out in everything you need for your adventure: boots, rain gear, protective clothing, insect repellant... this place has it all. Be sure to check out the Mount Beacon Fire Tower where, if you catch it on a clear day, you can see all the way to NYC and Albany. If getting out on the water is how you prefer to sightsee, Mountain Tops is a onestop-shop for a jaunt on the Hudson River, too. Kayak rentals are available seven days a week for only $20 an hour. Enjoy a lovely guided tour with friends beginning at Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park.

feast

Doctor Who fans rejoice! The Pandorica invites Whovians and non-Whovians alike to choose from an extensive menu that pays homage to the long-running show. Start with some “Spoilers” like Satan’s Pit of Perogies, or a hearty entrée like Are You My Mummy Bacon Bound Meatloaf. Top it off with something from their “Sweeties” and a glass from their wine list. Take note of the subtle but clever nods to the BBC’s brainchild. If you’re in more of a celebratory, happy hour mood, head down to Baja 328 Tequila Bar & Southwest Grill where the tequila flows generously (over 130 top-shelf varieties are available) and live entertainment gets everyone off their feet. Get some starters to share, like Baja wings, or dive right into their large taco and quesadilla selection. Their extensive menu aims to please, and Baja prides themselves on using the freshest ingredients. Keep an eye out for their spicy food and drink specials. For a more romantic and cozy vibe with old-world charm, take a trip to the Italian countryside at Brother’s Trattoria, where you can try cuisine found throughout northern and southern Italy. For a quick bite, grab a slice of fresh-out-of-the-oven pizza at the entrance, or for a more relaxing experience, have lunch or dinner for two in the dining room, and enjoy a cocktail in front of the fireplace.

Don’t forget to take something home with you to remember your travels: Sanctuary Home Furnishings is a haven of beautiful, fair trade wares from around the world. Gorgeous textiles, eclectic home dÊcor, luciously scented soaps and candles, and so much more fill this globally inspired and eco-conscious shop that will make you wonder just how much you can carry home with you. Then stop and smell the roses, or houseplants, or succulents; Raven Rose is something out of your greatest Pinterest fantasies. You can easily spend a day or more just roving Beacon’s waterfront. Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park is a revitalized riverfront destination where you can rent a kayak or explore wetlands and then take an easy hike to Denning’s Point State Park. Just up the road is Dia:Beacon, the globally important contemporary art museum in a repurposed box factory that many credit with fueling Beacon’s resurgence as a destination. A quick walk upriver from the train station takes you to Pete And Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park, where you can cool your heels wading in the River Pool. The Newburgh-Beacon Ferry run by Metro-North offers a brief, inexpensive cruise across the Newburgh Bay and back, with or without a stop for a drink at one of the bars along Newburgh’s revitalized waterfront.

hike

Towering over the city of Beacon, Mount Beacon is the highest peak of the entire Hudson Highlands. Hike the steep mile to the summit. You’ll get a workout, and the indescribable reward is a view that stretches, on a clear day, all the way from Manhattan Island to the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge—pretty much the most Hudson Valley that can be seen at once without an airplane. Metro-North trains from Grand Central make Beacon easy to reach. Once you get to the station, you can explore the waterfront, grab a taxi, or walk a mile up the hill to town.

Newburgh native Janet Ruggiero knows Giannetta Salon & Spa is the true entrance to Beacon. “You cross the Newburgh–Beacon Bridge, the sun is shining and, suddenly, there it is,” she says. “I try to tell people how beautiful the salon is, but then they walk in the door and just say, ‘wow.’” Indeed, when you catch sight of the stand-alone brick building on North Avenue, it is clear this place is more than just your average salon; it’s a destination.

When you want to be pampered and treat yourself to a spa day or a new look, Janet’s many years of experience, along with her knowledge of current trends, will not let you down. Giannetta’s is known throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond as the place to go for hair, makeup, and more. A peek at their online photo gallery shows their range of talent and expertise, with one photo after another of gorgeous hairstyles and faces. When you want to be pampered and treat yourself to a spa day or a new look, Janet’s many years of experience, along with her knowledge of current trends, will not let you down. 70

Janet’s journey to business owner and NYS-licensed esthetician began at a department store where she worked as a buying manager, quickly developing a talent in the cosmetics department. Focused on visual representation, Janet dealt primarily with the aesthetics of fine jewelry, fragrances, and makeup. “I always had this idea that I wanted to be a makeup artist, but maybe just a different kind of makeup

artist,” says Janet. It was her attention to detail in working with cosmetic products that helped her realize her passion and finally say, “I love this.” Janet brought her experience from the department store into creating a high-end business. “We aren’t like mom-and-pop shops in the area,” she says. “We do, however, have a strong relationship with local 71

My girls eat out around the salon and constantly refer local haunts to our clientele.” From the bustling shops and beautiful scenery, to the vast array of other artists in the community, it was no wonder Janet stayed close to home and opened up her shop in the sweet town of Beacon. Her original vision of the salon aesthetic was vintage and old-world Italian, but, ultimately, the glamor screams Fifth Avenue. When customers walk in, “they can expect to be offered coffee, wine, tea, whatever their poison,” says Janet. “It’s the little extras that make us who we are. My girls will greet you at the door and bring you to your chair with refreshments, give you a consultation before even touching your head, then give you a head and shoulder massage, wash your hair, and give you the results you’ve been dreaming of.” Giannetta’s treatment options merely begin with hair; if it’s full-on pampering you’re looking for, or just a quick picker-upper or two, they’ve got 72

you covered. For skin enhancements, they offer micro-needling to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, UVA skin analysis to see where the problem areas in your skin will be before they appear, and all kinds of facials, from deep pore to “vino therapy” merlot enzyme peels. For beauty enhancement, they can spare you the

hassle of applying your own makeup and give you a whole new look via airbrush or traditional makeup application, or add some lash extensions for something new, and they’d be happy to offer you an indulgent mani-pedi. “I’m known for brows,” Janet says. Her art is precise, making sure to blend and take into account bone structure when work-

ing with a client. Whether it’s tinting, waxing, or microblading, Janet and her crew know how to do it just right. And aside from the no-pain-no-gain treatments, there is a wide range of feel-good, relaxing, and healthful massage options, to help you feel beau73

tiful from the inside out. Hot stone and deep tissue massages are on the spa menu, in addition to acupuncture and spa packages for the ultimate facial and massage combo. If there is a new treatment out there, it’s likely that Gianetta’s will have it. A results-driven team, Janet values and encourages constant education. “The reason we stay so on-trend is because we are always taking classes,” she says. “Before a girl gets on the floor, she must be licensed, and even through her work, the training never stops.” Despite the salon’s competitive nature, Janet admits she can’t deny the significance of wordof-mouth. “We put ourselves out there, but a lot of it is clients recommending us to others,” she says. “We have a lot of brides who come from the city to see us.” “For us, the most important thing is making sure that we address all of our clients’ concerns, and we will get them feeling beautiful,” she says. Looking toward the salon’s future, Janet admits that she likes to think about focusing on slow, high-quality work, but she’s open to growth. “Will there be more Giannetta Salons?” she ponders. “Maybe.”

Joyful news: This exists in real life. It’s called Menla, and it’s right here in Phoenicia, nestled in the heart of the Catskill Mountains, and you’re invited to come and choose the elements of your own dream getaway from a unique menu of options.

Welcome to Tibet in the Catskills! There has always been something about this particular valley; the Esopus and Mahicans felt it, too. An ancient meteor impact crater with an energy all its own and a unique ecosystem form the special, private oasis that became Menla in 2002, when Tibet House US was given 325 glorious acres in Phoenicia. Tibet House US is the Dalai Lama’s Tibetan Cultural Center in NYC, but you don’t need to be a Tibetan or a Buddhist to benefit from what it offers at Menla. “We support many local farms in the area.... It benefits everyone by supporting the local economy, and it promotes a safer food supply.” In Ulster County, the High Falls Food Co-op is a beloved staple for affordable, locally grown produce. Its organizational structure is a true labor of love, says Kerry Malak, the Co-op’s assistant grocery buyer. Kerry describes the Co-op as a community effort. Its board of directors, elected by Co-op members, volunteer their time to ensure that the business meets the needs of the locals it serves, and its general managers oversee the day-to-day operations. And the produce is as fresh as it gets: According to Kerry, one of the Co-op’s main priorities is “to buy local whenever possible.” “We support many local farms in the area,” she adds. “Above our produce case, we have a list of which local farms we buy from. It benefits everyone by supporting the local economy, and it promotes a safer food supply.” 86

Alongside local and mostly organic produce, the Co-op also sells meats and cheeses, bulk dried goods, nutritional supplements, and natural health and wellness products. Kerry joined the High Falls Food Co-op team in November 2017 and quickly became more heavily involved with the operation; she was promoted to her current position in February 2018. Now, she wears many hats, also participating in the Co-op’s finance, communications, and expansion committees. It’s ex-

citing work, she says, and learning the ins and outs of running a business “really interests me.” Alongside local and mostly organic produce, the Co-op also sells meats and cheeses, bulk dried goods, nutritional supplements, and natural health

and wellness products. Anyone is welcome to shop at the Co-op’s colorful, bustling storefront on Route 213, but members of the program pay annual dues and receive discounts in return. Discounts range from 2 percent to 8 percent, depending on members’ level of participation at the Co-op (options in87

clude volunteering at the storefront or participating in one of the organization’s committees). According to Kerry, the Coop recently updated its membership fees, adding on a sliding-scale option to accommodate community members who want to contribute more to the program. It supports lowincome locals, too, providing no-cost memberships to anyone in the region receiving government assistance. Plus, as Kerry points out, the Co-op is a communityoriented space in every sense of the term. The board of directors hosts monthly

meet-and-greets for Co-op members and locals, and customers are always encouraged to ask questions about what’s going on behind the scenes. This March, the Coop also issued a survey for feedback from its more than 1,100 members. “It’s a place to learn and share ideas,” Kerry says, adding that the Co-op functions as an “educational resource” for its membership. Regulars at the Co-op truly run the gamut, including a mixture of families, individuals, and senior citizens from “Kingston to New Paltz to Ellenville, and everywhere in between.”

RECIPE

The Taste of Summer

homemade ice cream by anne pyburn craig

visitvortex.com

On a hot summer day, there’s nothing better than fresh ice cream, and asking around will lead you to many a great Hudson Valley ice creamery. But why not try making your very own with your favorite fresh local fruit? It’s easier than you think!

93

v e ry b e r ry s e v e n - m i n u t e i c e c r e a m

This simple recipe needs no ice cream maker and makes 4 servings (you can always make another round!). The process is fun, involving kid-friendly activities like squishing and shaking. It’s a great science lesson, since you’re using salt to chill ice to below its normal freezing temperature. And in just a few minutes, you’ll be enjoying the delicious results.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

• • • • • • • •

• Mix cream, half-and-half, sugar, fruit, and vanilla extract in a gallon-sized, resealable plastic bag.

1 cup heavy cream 1 cup half-and-half 1/2 cup sugar or honey 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup mashed or pureed fruit 2 gallon-sized plastic bags 2 cups ice cubes 1/2 cup large-crystal ice cream salt

• Squish around to combine until sugar is fully dissolved. • Place ice cubes and salt into second gallon-sized, resealable plastic bag. • Place the bag with the ice cream mixture into the bag with the ice. Seal outer bag. • Shake until mixture freezes, about 7 minutes. • Top with fresh fruit and eat up.

Ingredients: • 2 cups fresh or frozen berries • 1 cup sugar, honey, or maple syrup • 2 cups heavy whipping cream • 1 cup half-and-half • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Instructions: • Roughly chop berries to the desired size and add them to a large bowl. • Stir in the sugar (or syrup or honey) until dissolved. • Stir in remaining ingredients and pour mixture into the cylinder of an ice cream maker and follow the manufacturer’s directions. • Churn for about 10 minutes and enjoy the taste of summer!

local apricot ice cream

Ingredients: • 4 cups frozen chopped apricots • 1 cup coconut milk or your favorite milk • 2 tablespoons maple syrup Instructions: • Combine apricots, milk, and maple syrup in the bowl of a food processor. • Process until smooth. • Taste the mixture and adjust sweetener to your taste, if needed. • If you like a soft-serve texture, you can eat it right away! • If you’re not planning on eating it now, transfer it to a metal loaf pan and place it in the freezer for two hours. • Stir occasionally for a smoother ice cream. • Let sit 10 minutes before serving.

1 14-oz can full-fat coconut milk refrigerated overnight 2 ripe avocados halved, pitted, and peeled 1 ripe banana 3 tablespoons maple syrup 2 tablespoons lemon juice 4–5 large mint leaves

Instructions: • Place the avocados, banana, maple syrup, lemon juice and mint leaves in a food processor. • Scoop out the solid part of the coconut milk and add to processor. Save the liquid part to use for a smoothie, etc. • Blend until smooth and creamy. • Pour the mixture into the chilled loaf pan and use the back of a spoon to distribute evenly. • Place in the freezer for at least 4 hours or overnight. • Let soften for 10 minutes at room temperature before serving.

Catskill might not be the first destination that comes to mind when one imagines authentic Mediterranean food and drink, but manager Denise McCarroll and chef Salah Alygad, founders of 394 Main Mediterranean Bistro, aim to change that.

The space is quaint with a marble-topped bar and high beam ceilings—an ideal spot for fine dining with a casual, cozy ambiance.

Denise, a Greene County native, and Salah opened 394 Main after 13 years of experience in food service at Friends and Family ll in Stone Ridge. Since the restaurant and wine bar’s launch in April 2018, 394 Main has wowed local diners and food savvy out-of-towners alike. The menu’s keen focus on Mediterranean-style cuisine—think homemade hummus, homemade falafel and taboulleh, simply accented meat entrées— is a nod to Salah, who hails from Egypt. “Although he can cook food from all over the world well, it seemed an excellent idea to accentuate Mediterranean food,” Denise recalls. “And that’s how it began.” 102

394 Main Mediterranean Bistro is known for its fine selection of wines, including varieties from France, Italy, Spain, and Israel. cializes in friendly service. (Denise recommends calling to make a reservation on weekends due to limited space and high demand.) Outdoor seating is available on the bustling Main Street sidewalk, and is ideal for warm summer nights and getting a feel for the downtown Catskill scene.

394 Main Mediterranean Bistro is known for its fine selection of wines, including varieties from France, Italy, Spain, and Israel. Culture plays a big part in the bistro’s appeal with locals, too. On the fourth Monday of every month, creatives Robert Tomlinson and Michelle Williams host 394Spoken, a regular open mic night for poets, artists, and musicians. The event runs from 5:30 to 8pm and includes a full-service bar and special “Starving Artist Dinner” for a $5 entry fee. (It’s also co-sponsored by Magpie Bookshop, Denise’s neighbor over at 392 Main Street in Catskill.) Above all, Denise is overjoyed to be one of the many small business proprietors working to put Catskill on the map as a cultural hub. “Catskill is really experiencing a comeback,” she says, “and it’s fun to be a part of it.” 394 Main is open Wednesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, and Sunday for brunch.

Growing up in a small town in Massachusetts, Karina Cousineau didn’t always appreciate being “the girl whose mother makes her clothes,” but she did enjoy learning the skills involved. Little did she know that one day she would be loved far and wide as the creator of “the original easy dress®.”

At her boutique/design studio in

As a young adult, Karina worked for

Kingston, customers will find a classic collection of figure-flattering dresses for every body—the kind of dresses you can roll up and stow in your carryon, then slip into and feel ready for anything, from chairing a meeting to dancing all night, or just hanging out. These are dresses that become your best friends, reliable and fun at the same time. They’ve been called my “go-to dress” by customers, and Travel + Leisure named them “the perfect travel dress.” They are machinewashable and never need ironing. “I have some I made ten years ago,” says Karina, “and they still look exactly the

a brief period of time in the corporate fashion world. It didn’t take her long to realize that industry designers were not embracing women as they are—supporting a healthy self-image was not a priority. And so she decided that corporate fashion was not an industry that she wanted to be a part of.

me,” she says. “I had a need for a dress that would go from day to night in my busy life, and feel comfortable."

Karina knew that it was possible to have clothing that embraces selfacceptance, and that having a supportive, joyful work place to make dresses that celebrated women was entirely possible, too. “My first customer was

They are machine-washable and never need ironing. Not to mention, they’re proudly made in the US (New York, to be exact). So, she decided to try it her way. “Once I started making my own, I would hear, ‘I want a Karina dress!’ And that’s how it started: one dress at a time.” Clearly, and to her great joy, she was onto something. “People kept telling me it was their new favorite dress, their new comfort zone—I don’t necessarily like to compare them to sweats or pajamas, but they’re no harder to wear than that. I’m a New Englander, I like things that make sense, so that’s what I’ve been doing all along; we just make the ones that people like. And people collect them. You don’t end up owning just one after you experience the way they look and feel.” Ten years into designing and selling dresses, her company was recognized by Oprah and continued to move forward. As Karina says, it was a journey of one dress at a time, loving herself, loving her customers, and the daily process of creating these “dresses for every body.” 119

At any given time there are a dozen style choices, each one available in six different prints, none made with zippers or buttons, all wrinkle-proof, with pockets. After working for eight years in Brooklyn, Karina began to seek a better life for herself and, with full awareness that her business would continue to flourish, decided to move her business up to Kingston. The move allowed her to expand the company, as well as hire local talent. “We’ve got 2,200 square feet and half of it is our flagship store, the other half is for our online fulfillment,” she says. “We do everything here, from textile design to photo shoots; we use real customers as models. We get interns from the SUNY Ulster

fashion design program; so far, four of them have moved into paid positions. Between here and the Brooklyn production facility, we make 300 to 400 dresses a week.” At any given time, there are a dozen style choices, each one available in six different prints, none made with zippers or buttons, all wrinkle-proof, with pockets. “There’s nothing more fun,” says Karina, “than having somebody walk in saying, ‘I don’t do dresses—I haven’t worn a dress in years,’ and then watching their face in the mirror. A lot of them leave with four or five.”

Ever since he first opened the shop in Woodstock, Paul has been listening to artists; if there’s one thing he’s learned, it’s that no two are alike. Whatever you’re into— airbrush, digital art, calligraphy, silkscreening, origami—you’ll find selection and quality here. “We’ve got all kinds of new products: paints, brushes, new lines of can-

vas, linen canvas... it’s a much more complete inventory, and we were pretty complete before,” he says. Office supplies may have been dropped from the name of the business, but you’ll still find them on the shelves, along with legal forms, topographical maps, and an easily accessible, high-quality copy shop. “It’s easier than ever to

Architects, designers, and engineers can email us a drawing, we’ll print it out and deliver it to their office.” 126

Catskill Art will also take care of any framing needs. According to Paul, “Our framing business has about doubled; we have four framers working in a big intake area.” Too busy to come in? Shop the vast selection of products online. Customers located in Ulster and Dutchess counties get free next-

day delivery on orders over $35. “You’ll still get your customer rewards and benefits, but you can stay in your studio and have us bring supplies to your door,” says Paul. (If that studio should need an easel, lighting, storage, or other furnishings, Catskill Art’s got you covered there, too.)

Best of all, says Paul, is the vibe. “Erin (Keating) and I were just talking about it; she’s been managing the business for over ten years now, and we’ve been having fun all along, but the new setup is just so refreshing,” he says. “My staff are artists themselves, experts, and having everybody on one floor

Stop in at the new Kingston Plaza location and say hello. “We’ve always been taking the retail experience to the next level,” says Paul. “But having all this room for the vision is cloud nine. The Garden

made in the shade b y v i c to r i a c oy n e , o w n e r v i c to r i a g a r d e n s , ro s e n da l e

Throughout the Hudson Valley, landscapes are peppered with soaring pine trees, sugar maples, and northern red oak. This makes for spectacular fall foliage, but it also means gardens are dappled or drenched with shade for some or all of the day.

Many gardeners find shade gardens a particular challenge, but there are literally hundreds of shade plants to choose from. You can increase your gardening success by planting the varieties of plants that will thrive in our climate.

visitvortex.com

I have been landscaping in the Hudson Valley for over 30 years. It is through trial and error, experience, and constant searching that I have learned which plants thrive in the shade. Here are some of my favorites:

133

heuchera

For shade in the Hudson Valley, this ornamental perennial is a staple. Also known as coral bells, Heuchera is a low-growing perennial that comes in an assortment of leaf colors, from deep purple with black veining, to red, pink, green, and gold— plus some combinations that look silvery or peachy. The foliage is spectacular, but these plants also bloom with delicate upright stalks of flowers from April to September. The flowers range in color from white to pink, peach, and red.

134

OPTIONS FOR DEER-RESISTANT SHADE PLANTS hellebores

I have been a big fan of Hellebores for years, because they’re hardy, deer-resistant shade plants, and they are one of the first perennials to bloom late-winter/early-spring. Many varieties push their delicate blooms up through the snow, and the evergreen foliage is a welcome winter sight.

epimediums

Epimediums flower in many different colors: Epimedium x rubrum has not only diminutive, deep-pink fairy flowers, but the ruby tinted leaves will add even more color to your early spring garden.

&

j a pa n e s e f o r e s t g r a s s

But flowers are not the only things that can add interest through the fall; Japanese painted ferns (Athyrium niponicum var. pictum) and Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa) offer foliage with color and texture for the shade all season long.

Meet The President

A great community bank is a huge community asset: They don’t forget their roots, they treat the small depositors as carefully as the large ones, and they find ways to leverage their capabilities to help make the community a better place. And a truly great community bank keeps good community people front and center. Rondout Savings Bank has done just that in choosing Cheryl Bowers as its first female President and CEO. 138

Cheryl, a Kingston native, was just 16 when she started her first job as a local bank records clerk in the early 80s, moving into the work full-time after she graduated. “I took any job opportunity that came up at that bank,” she says. “I worked there for about 20 years, and by the time I left, I’d worked in several leadership roles in different departments, and in several counties; it had evolved into a large corporate bank.”

SHOP LOCALLY but, knowing that we could bring our experience and knowledge of business banking to Rondout, and develop a department that would serve our business community better... it was a no-brainer. We were able to make decisions right here; we eliminated the “red tape” and helped build relationships that, I am proud to say, are still with us today.”

for only a few minutes, I knew this would be a great opportunity for me and I said, ‘yes.’ After nearly 20 years at the other bank, it was a tremendous decision;

Over the decades since Cheryl started that first job at 16, the banking industry—like so many—has seen the rise of

“Business clients can be anything from

a person working out of their living room, to someone with hundreds of employees; either way, we celebrate their wins and hang in there when it’s tough.”

–Cheryl Bowers, CEO and President, Rondout Savings Bank

Cheryl was disinclined to evolve into a large corporate banker, and when her colleague Jim Davenport told her he was headed over to Rondout Savings Bank and would like her to come help them organize a commercial lending and deposit department, she jumped at the chance. “It was 2001, and I was expecting my second child,” she remembers. “After listening to Jim

more women into administrative roles; but, women are still underrepresented in the top ranks. Cheryl’s perspective is nuanced. “In most meetings, there are very few women represented as CEOs,” she says. “I never feel alienated or less valuable than my male counterparts, but I do feel that the industry would benefit greatly from a broader perspective brought to the table by women and men, with more diverse backgrounds, experiences, and thought processes.” In her volunteer life, Cheryl’s a busy soul, serving on multiple boards. She’s been honored for her efforts by the YWCA Tribute to Women, named Volunteer of the Decade by Gateway Community Industries, inducted into the SUNY New Paltz Business Hall of Fame, and named Signora of the Year by the Ulster County Italian American Foundation. “It’s the community work that makes life whole,” she says. “I’d do that stuff full-time if I could. But I do love my work and the people. Being appointed President and CEO of this amazing, 150-year-old bank is a soul-shaking honor; I don’t take it lightly.” At Rondout, Cheryl gets to do banking as she feels it should be done. “My goal is to never have a typical day,” she says. “I thrive on the energy that comes from doing different, challenging, innovative things all the time. Our employees are constantly challenging me with great ideas. We have wonderful, loyal, long-term, multi-generational families that bank with us, which is a huge honor; mutual respect is the core. It matters to us that our customers do well and be successful; if they don’t, then we don’t either. Business clients can be anything from a person working out of their living room, to someone with hundreds of employees; either way, we celebrate their wins and hang in there when it’s tough.” 140

“My door and my executive team’s doors are always

open—we enjoy our interactions with our customers

and community leaders, and tailoring to their needs.” –Cheryl Bowers, CEO and President, Rondout Savings Bank

Being a small local bank doesn’t mean providing less service. “We offer state-of-the-art loan and deposit products and deliver them in whatever way makes the best sense,” Cheryl says. “We have hands-on, personalized delivery, complemented by any digital service you get at the mega-corporate banks. Most importantly, my door and my executive team’s doors are always open—we enjoy our interactions with our customers and community leaders, and tailoring to their needs. I‘m so proud of our employees. They’re true community stewards who can be counted on to volunteer, sponsor, and support our local not-for-profits and business development agencies.” To help those employees keep on growing, the bank offers them plentiful opportunities to expand their horizons. “We’ve recently invested a lot of resources in continued education and learning opportunities for our staff,” says Cheryl. “And this will continue to be a priority focus going forward.” In helping to build that kind of a community bank, Cheryl and her crew are working behind the scenes on many of the new and 141

Having grown up and raised two kids here (Christopher, 26, is an insurance producer with Reis Group; Angie, 17, is a Kingston High School senior; and husband Tim is a detective and 32-year veteran with the KPD), she’s loving the blossoming creativity in Kingston. “As a lifelong resident, I’ve seen an amazing amount of change,” she says. “There are so many improvements all across the city, not just at one end of town at the expense of

And Cheryl, who loves to enjoy life among friends and family, is having a blast helping to make dreams come true. “I had the great privilege of touring the Fuller Building, a factory that’s been repurposed by someone I’ve known for two decades, and I was just astounded

Experience the play in cinemas, filmed live on stage as part of National Theatre Live’s 10th birthday. Small Island embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948—the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury. The play follows three intricately connected stories. Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer, and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots. Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the UK. A company of 40 actors take to the stage of the National Theatre in this timely and moving story.
