wedding venues

As the pandemic abates (as of this writing, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that wedding venues can host receptions of up to 150 people with some restrictions), it’s time to start thinking about where to celebrate. Historic castle? Mansion on the river? Rustic barn? Mountain meadow? Whatever your dream may be, whatever your style, the Hudson Valley options are vast and charming. Expect a refreshed sense of joy in venue owners as they’re getting back to doing what they thrive on most: hosting celebrations of love, ensuring everyone has a wonderful time, and making your Big Day flawless.

Opus 40.

Expect a refreshed sense of joy in venue owners as they’re getting back to doing what they thrive on most: hosting celebrations of love, ensuring everyone has a wonderful time, and making your Big Day flawless.

Start with the Internet—social media, websites, reviews—to find venues full of features you adore with simpatico management. Once you’ve got your top three picked out, do some day trippin’ (nothing like a scenic drive to a beautiful location anyway), envision yourselves and your loved ones there, and find the fit that lifts your heart.

12

Inn at West Settlement.

Note that some venues may be booked heavily this year with weddings that were postponed in 2020. If you have your heart set on a popular one, you may need a little bit of patience—but hey, something that great can be worth the wait.

Smaller crowds often make for deeper conversations and more intimate moments. Spending the day with your close circle is entirely different from masterminding a production for 200.

T

he good news is, many couples who thought they were “settling” for a micro wedding or a Zoom hybrid have discovered that these smaller gatherings can be uniquely charming and romantic. Smaller crowds often make for deeper conversations and more intimate moments. Spending the day with your close circle is entirely different from masterminding a production for 200, and might actually feel better on such an important, intimate day. That said, COVID-safe micro weddings look different, and adjusting your expectations accordingly will allow you to take joy in what you can do instead of mourning what you can’t. HERE ARE TIPS TO MAKE THE MAGIC HAPPEN:

Micro weddings are typically a little shorter than traditional weddings, and tend to have a more casual vibe. This frees you to think outside the box 21

A trimmed in-person guest list means you can put more thought —and possibly more money—into the experience of each individual. Go wild with your menu. Find the vintage fashion of your dreams. Micros offer a lot more venue flexibility; places that would never hold a traditional wedding can be adapted to 30 or so people 22

with ease, so you can be creative with location ideas. If your heart is set on a bigger space, talk to the wedding coordinator about using furniture arrangements and other measures, such as drapes or room dividers, that will pull the look together at scale. Think about making a weekend of it with a dozen or so of your nearest and dearest. You can arrange for contactless delivery of everything you need in advance; decorating for the ceremony makes a great group project for the right group. Whatever you do, you’ll need an officiant and a photographer. Un-

about what matters most. Many wedding planners and venues now offer micro packages. A gifted wedding planner knows the ins and outs of the Wedding World and can steer you clear of dead-end roads and potholes.

less you and yours are all in on DIY, a caterer is the third leg of your essential tripod. Expand as needed, but those are the basics. One professional you wouldn’t have needed in 2019 has become essential: a wedding streamer. Virtual reality allows you to turn the peak moments of your micro wedding into a ceremony that includes loved ones from everywhere, and wedding streamers have become proficient in helping include remote guests in meaningful ways while managing the tech, music, and special effects. Keep your wedding website updated with the latest guidelines and regulations and any changes in plans, and stay in close touch with your vendors if anything major changes. 23

Outdoor venues make a bigger party safer and every party freer and more laid-back. Here are some of the ways you can add elegance, creature comforts, and an extra layer of safety to the mix: BASICS FIRST: Port-a-potties are an obvious must-have at an outdoor event, but you’re not stuck with the kind you remember from the county fair. Today’s options include roomy, well-ventilated porta-johns with sanitizer 28

stations (check out John To Go) and luxury portable restroom trailers available in various sizes, like those available from VIP To Go.

plan to share it with wedding attendants, keep it simple for easy wipe-downs and choose a well-ventilated model.

SEVERAL SMALLER TENTS may work better for distanced seating than one large one. A good PA system will make sure everyone feels included in your ceremony and festivities.

If you’re doing a buffet meal, either have servers (the fewer people touching spoons and things, the better) or have INDIVIDUAL SERVINGS PRE-PLATED. Drinks, too, are safer in individual bottles and cans.

A COMFY TENT with sides can be set up as a changing room for the bride and groom. If you

PRETTY SIGNAGE will remind people to stay distanced, as will properly spaced tables and chairs. Communicate with your guests ahead of time about their level of risk tolerance; arrange extra distance for medically vulnerable guests. MOUNTAIN MEADOWS AND GARDENS offer the natural decorating grace of Nature herself; if the season is right, you may have all the blooms you need right there. To add fancy touches, use trellises and tents. ELEGANT MONOGRAMMED MASKS laid out at tables are a lovely touch.

dings. Proprietors are well-schooled in safety tactics by now.

RUSTIC OUTDOOR DECOR is incredibly flexible. Wooden barrels, hay bales, even pickup truck beds can be transformed into whimsical, beautiful accents and photo ops. Hay bales set seven or eight feet apart and “upholstered” with colorful quilts around a firepit? Solar strings of fairy lights outlining the tree trunks? Get wild with it.

When your wedding requires you to rent various items, whether a particular venue doesn’t offer them or you’re hosting a DIY event, finding what you need can be an overwhelming task. Remember to think about the flow of every part of your

day, and be organized in what you really need versus what you truly want, keeping your budget in mind. Focus on the vibe you want to create and then find what’s necessary to make your wedding as personalized and fun as you want it to be.

Beyond the tents, tables, and chairs you’ll need for the day, all kinds of other possibilities present themselves that can personalize the look and feel of your venue. Here are some you might need and some you might really want to consider. •

Old-time popcorn or cotton candy machine

Photo booth with green screen

Zip line

Vintage furniture groupings

Lighting effects such as fairy lights or lanterns.

Glamping tents

Vintage unmatched tableware

Fun tapestries or drapes

Ice cream truck

As with most businesses in this marrying moment, the best rental companies are catching up with backlogged demand and sanitizing every possible surface between uses. Reserve the stuff you want well in advance, and make sure the venue and rental company are on the same page about delivery and setup. 37

w e d d i n g d e s s e rt If there’s a part of the meal more fun than dessert, no one knows what it is, and the very essence of it is perfect for a wedding. Sweetness just goes well

cakes, for smaller weddings, offer the baker the chance to concentrate on your desired “wow” factor and execute it flawlessly. And just about anything you could want can be made gluten-free or organic in these parts.

For sugar- or gluten-free guests, consider adding a fruit station. Few things are lovelier than fruits and berries. Add yogurt and various options for toppings (chopped nuts, granolas, sprigs of mint) and guests can build their own healthy sweet treats. You might want to plan on two servings per guest; individual serving containers make it easy to take something tasty home to savor alongside the memories.

Individualized desserts are a safety-forward option, but they’ve always made for a wonderful dining experience. Ice cream cones can be used for pudding, or fresh berries atop sponge cake. How about frothy ice cream shakes garnished with colorful cookies? Cake pops have become a fine art. Martini glasses are elegant filled with fruit and topped with chocolate. Cupcakes and mini-cakes can be served on monogrammed coasters.

flower trends for this time

There are infinite choices when it comes to integrating blossoms into your celebration, but here are some trends the American Floral Trends Forecast expects to see ruling in 2021 that make deep psychological sense: •

Joyful Expression: Opt for bouquets, centerpieces, and incidental arrangements that are rich in color, texture, and delicate detail. Color palettes also set a mood—deep, rich hues for exuberance, bold and soft to offset one another, earth tones or lots of greenery to evoke a sense of deep peace and calm.

Otherworldliness: “Floating” florals that cascade from on high and immersive installations create an ethereal sense of enchantment. An immersive installation that doubles as a photo nook is lots of fun. And don’t forget scent! Masses of lilacs or roses do wonderful things to the human brain.

Simplicity: Earth tones, maybe with a hint of blush thrown in, or expanses of simple green and white can impart a feeling of respite from our hectic digital world.

Sustainability: Ethical sourcing, foam-free designs, and an arrangement to donate your blooms to a place that could use a little color will add a warm, satisfying feeling to your floral experience.

Create your own bouquet or let one of their florists design an arrangement for you from their array of fresh-cut flowers: roses, snapdragons, orchids, lilies—selections from far and wide that change from day to day and season to season. They also specialize in creating arrangements for every kind of event, and they deliver locally. Stop by any of their four locations and see what’s blooming at the Adams Flower Shop.

Inspired by place and informed by season, Dirty Girls Design’s arrangements capture the wilds of the Hudson Valley—spring’s emergent growth, summer’s explosion of color and bounty, fall’s abundance of foliage, flower, and fruit. Even winter offers hardy, textural foliage and striking architectural forms. We are committed to sourcing local material, both farmed and foraged, and cultivating authentic relationships with clients to create distinctive occasions.

Hops Petunia is a floral boutique that takes great pride in honoring nature by bringing back the artistry of floral design in its most honest way. Every design is artfully made and special to the occasion and season, with sweeping gestures, wild and textured details. We do our very best to bring your wedding dreams to life. We use as many American and locally grown flowers as we can.

Capturing The Day

Talk to your photographer about style choices and your vision for the day to ensure that the images they capture will be cherished by you and your kin through the ages. Are you looking for candid, documentary photos or slightly more staged “lifestyle” shots? Do you want to get a little crazy with artistic images, tell the story of the day with editorial sequences, or stick to the time-honored classic groupings? A mix?

76

Like most wedding vendors in 2021, photographers are striving to play catch-up and balance postponements with new work. They’re also mastering the art of working with smaller, more intimate ceremonies and snapping gorgeous shots with socially distanced zoom lenses.

Photo by Sarma & Co Photography.

Make sure a lot of images will be captured—you can always edit, but, of course, you can’t re-shoot.

Think of the possibilities—historic mansions with formal gardens, riverside parks with mountain backdrops, waterfalls, Catskills high peaks....

Hudson Valley photographers know where all the scenery is; if you’re thinking outdoor micro-mini or elopement, consider asking your photographer for suggestions about spots where the two of you, your officiant, and a couple of friends could take a hike, tie the knot, and create incredible images together. Think of the possibilities—historic mansions with formal gardens, riverside parks with mountain backdrops, waterfalls, Catskills high peaks.... Bring a fancy picnic from a favorite caterer and you’re set.

Like everyone else in the milestone festivities field, wedding clothiers are chomping at the bit and bursting with fresh creativity. Some of the festive styles they’re offering in 2021: Gatsby-esque Roaring 20s styles dripping with pearls and crystals; bold, chic prints that pop on white; flawlessly tailored clean lines; puff sleeves; cool pastels like pistachio and sky blue; laser-cut lace; short ceremony dresses; versatile convertible dresses that will take you through the whole day; big ruffles and dazzling sparkles. (We told you it was fun!)

But expect to find both suits and tuxes in a rainbow of bold colors like blue, teal, orange, and burgundy, as suit-wearers assert their right to the spotlight. Even charcoal suits are hot stuff with the perfect tie and cufflinks—and don’t forget the boutonnieres.

Wedding beauty starts today. If you want that glowing look when you walk down the aisle, or even if you just want to feel healthy from head to toe, it all starts from within. Eat all the nuts and berries and greens, swap out sugar for honey, drink the water. Get active in whatever way most satisfies. Treat your hair to avocado or coconut oil once a month. Use whitening toothpaste for a bright smile. You don’t even have to wait until The Day to reap your rewards on this one. If you’re planning to go dramatic with makeup for your celebrations, be sure to do a dry run so you’ll know exactly what to do when it’s time.

lace and earrings. Think of a an elegant multi-strand choker to sweep the neckline, or something chunkier for more effect. Ear crawlers for bohemian style. Elegant pearl drop earrings for a classic style. Or a crown to adorn a wispy up-do. Like a good floral arrangement, jewelry will take your dress and beauty design to the next level.

When choosing a gift, think deeply about what would make the couple happy and what could add to their marriage experience. From kitchenware to linens to cash, gift giving is a way for guests to show they care. Gift registries make the decision-making process much easier. Guests know exactly what kinds of items couples need and in which styles. Luckily, many smaller and local businesses also offer registry options, so you can pick out something unique and personal that you know the couple will definitely love. Guests sometimes choose instead

100

to give a more personalized surprise. As long as its hearfelt and meaningful, don’t let the wedding registry scare you away from this option. Also don’t shy away from giving straight-up cash. In today’s world, cash is always greatly appreciated. If setting up your own registry, consider local businesses. Your registry should be as unique as you are. Include items you need for your home and new life together, but also include ones that simply make you happy. Also consider arranging for a donation in your honor to a nonprofit organization of your choice that is dear to your heart. Weddings, and the gifts exchanged at them, are all about celebrating the couple and their commitment of love. As long as the gift conveys your support and thoughtfulness, you need not worry.

Gift giving at weddings is a way to show just how much you love and care for the newly married couple, and it also helps them to begin their lives together more comfortably.

i n t i m at e ceremonies This pandemic year, the idea of social gatherings has changed, and isolation has created a boom in couples deciding that their stress-tested, cozierthan-ever relationships deserve a wedding ceremony. The combination has led to a rise in safety-conscious ceremonies that often exceed all expectations. Maybe you have always dreamed of a big, packed

church and a country club reception, and if that’s your dream, you’ll need to pick a date that’s far enough in the future to avoid a potential postponement. If you just want to formalize your commitment, there are ways to get there in less time and with less fuss than ever, that will include your loved ones near and far in the proceedings.

107

here are some emerging wedding styles that have gained prominence in our current reality:

108

If you want to go just a little fancier, many venues now offer elopement packages—basically micro-mini weddings at which you’ll be happily spoiled. There’s even a company, Hudson Valley Elope, that specializes solely in this kind of wedding: two expert photographers, a videographer, and an officiant/ritualist who’ll listen to your love story and help you craft a ceremony that’s pure magic and pure you. Have some prints made of those keepsake photos to send out to distanced loved ones.

Elopements can be as simple as the two of you and your officiant hiking to a waterfall or getting together in your backyard. The one other thing you really need is a photographer to capture your rapture for posterity. The Hudson Valley is jam-packed with mind-blowingly gorgeous spots; if you don’t have a favorite yet, ask your photographer or officiant for suggestions.

Micro-weddings include up to 50 people (in places with pandemic restrictions, your count must include every person present and not just every guest) and are quickly emerging as a perfect idea for a great many couples. The small size allows for your pick of parks, galleries, restaurants, and historic sites that wouldn’t hold a large crowd. Your budget will go farther in countless other areas that add wow, and so will your time and energy. How about a personalized note to each beloved guest? Your reception will feel more like an intimate dinner party, less like being presented to court. A microwedding has a way of centering the couple, their love, and their relationships with friends and family that a massive wedding just doesn’t allow. We think the small-is-beautiful trend may be here to stay.

Your ceremony should be spiritual and emotional soul food that will nourish you both all over again. 109

Virtual weddings make it easy to do things you might not otherwise do: One couple signed up every child on the guest list as virtual attendants who walked down an “aisle” in their own homes to bless the union, others have provided

time for each guest to say a few words. Send guests a tip sheet in advance so they’ll know what to expect and how to easily join; consider arranging for deliveries of edibles, drinks, and a fun package of favors to open as they log on. Timing of a virtual wedding requires a little thought; you don’t want to choose a time that means your friend in Hawaii will be rising at 5am if you can help it. Virtual weddings are typically shorter events—nobody should have to spend four hours at an online event. Pack that 90 minutes or so full of great memories together, and have dinner after with your close friends and family that are there in person.

Virtual/hybrid weddings mean that your oldest, frailest family elder and your old college pal living in Greece can share your joy without the fuss of plane tickets and accommodations. You’ll want to hire pros (or recruit a techminded friend) who can help you get the most out of a streaming or video conferencing platform, with options like a virtual lounge where guests can gather and mingle or special background effects.

wedding sounds We’re hoping that by the time your wedding comes along, restrictions on gatherings, dancing, and live performance will be but an unpleasant memory. That said, the charm of micro-nuptials and elopements, and the versatility and convenience of virtual gatherings, are here to stay. But one thing will never change: In addition to food, drink, officiant, and each other, many wedding duos consider a great soundtrack essential to a day full of forever memories. So here are some notes to hit if you’re planning something innovative: Think outside your musical lane and consider an in-scale live performance. Steel drum bands, duos

and trios, a capella, and chamber musicians can bring right-sized sounds to your party with ease. Consider making your own playlist on your phone—it’s much less daunting for an intimate 90-minute event than for a four-hour marathon—and then bringing or renting speakers to connect to your phone. Some restaurants and halls may already have great speakers you can use. For a virtual ceremony and/or reception, many DJs and musicians have expanded their skill sets to include streaming your favorites at just the right moment for maximum impact, while helping you coordinate virtual backgrounds, slideshows, and special effects.
