Most of us don’t work in theater or film, so it’s not every day we get the opportunity to craft an immersive experience for all our nearest and dearest ones. But a wedding

is the perfect reason to discuss your origin story and your shared values—so make the most of it and discover your wedding vibe in the process.

Record your conversation. Not only can you refer to your origin story, your special moments, and your hopes and intentions as you plan your celebration of love, a

Always dreamed of a big party? They’re back, big time. But couples are taking notice of how very individual and personalized micro-weddings and elopements can be and realizing there’s no reason they can’t make their big party every bit as unique in its own way. The wave of pent-up wedding demand that built during the pandemic is very much still cresting in 2022. (So are the waves of deep appreciation for our lives and loved ones—and the surging creativity that follows

tough times.) Check a few websites of core vendors—venues, caterers—to see how far out they’re booked before you set your heart on a date. Consider making your wedding day a wedding weekend. Gathering your people together for a couple of days makes things immersive and memorable, and there’s no shortage of amazing, even affordable things to do and places to hang out around here. Start planning early and make your guests part of the process.

You can determine which places meet your basic criteria online, make phone calls for clarification, and spend a couple of weekends touring the possibilities. Take pictures. Make notes. Professional Wedding Pros Reduce a Lot of Stress

p ro p e r p r i o r p l a n n i n g by anne pyburn craig

Getting married ought to be fun. For some people, party planning is also great fun. But even for those people, planning a wedding can become overwhelming. A wedding of any size has a lot of moving parts that need fitting together, and unless you

have a gift for planning and lots of time to invest— not just one or the other—it’s worth considering some level of help. Good planners have a passion and a gift for bringing your concept to vivid life and helping you make memories that will last forever.

31

Many of today’s planners offer various choices beyond the basic full-service and day-of options—you can choose to hire a venue scout to find a place that checks your boxes or a stylist to coordinate your decor, find a budget-friendly virtual planning process, or go all in and bring a planner on board as soon as you have your theme in mind and get help with everything from budgeting to clean-up.

Depending on your lives and personalities, a full-service planner may be money well spent. Here’s what to look for in a good one: • You’re hiring someone with a gift for listening, keeping cool, delegating, collaborating, and leadership who will dispassionately dispense with logistical snags that would cause you major agita if you were stuck facing them yourself. • You’re hiring someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of local places, people, and things that you’ll need—everything from flowers and videography to rentals. Someone who knows how 32

to build a team of responsive, talented vendors and coordinate their work will save you many hours of emailing and phone calls. • A planner may know ways to actually save you money on other budget lines by putting the right packages together or just by being an industry insider. It’s always nice to have a connection in the business. That’s your planner.

Look for a planner with a comprehensive portfolio who can handle questions of food service, timelines, flow, logistics, and guest experience, while making sure your needs are met—including your need to make your own choices on the resonant things, while they build in the underlying structure. 33

Wedding Rentals

Lucky you, planning a Hudson Valley wedding! Between our own local talent and the neighboring metro area, it’s hard to imagine that there’s anything in the world you can’t rent for your wedding day. A crystal chandelier? Mismatched antique china? Laser tag? Tribal rugs? If you can dream it, someone can help you find it. Rental companies will be glad to help you choose complementary pieces, but don’t be afraid to let your own sense of style be your guide. If you fall in love with something, chances are your guests will love it, too—this whole celebration is your personal love story, after all.

renting tips:

• Assess what’s included in your venue’s package. What blanks do you need to fill in with rentals? If you’re not in love with their chair selection, let’s say, most places will allow you to rent and import your own for the day. • If you’re renting the basics for a big wedding—tables, chairs, tents—check out the big, long-established event rental companies to see if you can save a few dollars. Devote that leftover money to fun and unique items from an artsy shop with vintage or imported goodies. 38

• How about renting some fun? A popcorn or cotton candy machine? (Remember, cotton candy can come in any color you choose, and popcorn bags can be stamped with your initials.) A bouncy house (for kids and adults!)? A green-screen-enabled photo booth offering every sort of romantic background? A vintage ice cream truck? The fun does not have to be limited to what the venue has to offer, so bring it with you!

Photo by Susan Baker. Flowers by Meadow Wilds.

• Don’t worry about getting every chair to match. Different shapes and sizes can add visual interest, and you can pull the look together with matching cushions in your wedding colors. • Feel free to mix up round and square tables as well. Placing them alternately can be a terrific look. Or do you like long banquet tables? They can make a large room feel like the great hall of a castle. • Mixing and matching can also be great fun for china, glassware, and centerpieces. You can pull the look together with table linens, if you like, and layer those in complementary colors and textures for even more visual interest. • Many rental companies with collections of unique and vintage items can also give some styling tips. Bring pics to show them your venue and design elements as you browse and consult. • Don’t forget the lighting! You may want to supplement or switch out what the venue’s got on hand with candelabras, light strings, or different colors. The right lighting goes a long way in setting the right mood. r e n ta l c h e c k l i s t Anything your venue or caterer doesn’t supply, you’ll want to rent. Never fear. With rental companies helping, a wedding can be put together anywhere, any way you like. Tip: Round your numbers up— better to have a few extra chairs or a tent or dance floor that’s a bit too big, rather than too few or too small.

So you’re going to say “We Do” to one another, in front of your community of loved ones and any Divine Presence you wish to involve.

It’s one of the most resonant moments of this memorable day; you want to do it in a way that’s uniquely you and draws everyone close.

43

Maybe you love the marriage rite of your religion, in which case you may have your officiant, location, and basic ceremony all mapped out. Make sure you know all about any premarital counseling or other requirements involved. If you want to personalize your ceremony, make sure your officiant is on board with your ideas. Speaking of having everyone on board, New York State requires that you both come in at least 24 hours before the ceremony with proof of age and ID, plunk down $40, and sign your license. Once 24 hours have passed, you can speak your vows in the presence of a current or former governor, a mayor, an appointed local marriage officer, a judge (anything from federal or tribal to village justice of the peace), a clergyperson, or a few other options explained in Section 11 of the Domestic Relations Law. 44

You should be able to find someone wonderful— someone who can radiate light and warmth into the ritual, whether it’s the secular basics, straight out of a venerable holy book, or written by the two of you over several successive sessions in the kitchen or the hot tub.

With all of those choices on the menu, you should be able to find someone wonderful—someone who can radiate light and warmth into the ritual, whether it’s the secular basics, straight out of a venerable holy book, or written by the two of you over several successive sessions in the kitchen or the hot tub. Be ready to tell your

story in some detail and explain the basic family dynamics; the right officiant will make time to hear it and will use the information to make their contribution personal. The biggest and best trend of 2022 being our appreciation of each other, you may want to incorporate one or more of the following into your ceremony:

It’s one of the most resonant moments of this memorable day; you want to do it in a way that’s uniquely you and draws everyone close. 45

• Water Cleansing: Your officiant pours water from a pitcher over your upturned hands, symbolizing the washing away and releasing of past negativity. • Handfasting: You join your hands in a figure 8; your officiant binds them with a ribbon or scrap of heirloom fabric.

• Unity Candle: Each of you uses a smaller candle to light the larger flame that symbolizes your union. Alternatively, parents can do this to mark the joining of families.

• Friendship Circle: At a smaller wedding, you can ask everyone to form a circle and do a classic round, giving everyone a chance to speak. • Ring Blessing: Tie your two rings together with a satin ribbon and pass around, so that each guest (or perhaps the two first rows at a large wedding) can hold them in their hands for a moment and add their good vibes. • Light It Up: Instead of (or in addition to) a Unity Candle, you can arrange a display of votives near the entrance; each guest can light one as an expression of their joy and good wishes for your union.

Any time from mid-spring to mid-fall, there’s a lot of beauty blooming in this valley, and you’ll be saving money and fossil fuels by incorporating local flowers into your scheme.

With the right florist, your floral style can flow from your choice of venue, attire, and color palette like a meadow coming into bloom. If you’ve been to a wedding where the flowers were especially joyous, find out who the artist was. Check out online portfolios and social media. Read reviews. When you meet with a florist whose work you like, bring along color swatches and photos you find especially inspiring. Take note of what will be in season at the time of your wedding: Any time from mid-

spring to mid-fall, there’s a lot of beauty blooming in this valley, and you’ll be saving money and fossil fuels by incorporating local flowers into your scheme. Start looking for a florist well in advance; the good ones get booked up. After you’ve reviewed proposals and decided who you’ll be working with, expect to pay a 50 percent deposit to secure your date. Be clear on exactly what’s included: will there be a site visit? Do the florist’s services include delivery, setup, teardown, and removal? 57

The bouquet toss, should you choose to do one, has been proven to work better with a smaller, lighter bouquet. If yours is large, consider tossing a bridesmaid’s posy. Floral accents for the bridal party can include bouquets, nosegays, floral crowns, or corsages worn at the wrist or waist, along with boutonnieres for those wearing suits. 58

• A classic, formal venue such as a banquet hall or mansion looks splendid decked out in masses of white blossoms with blue, green, or deep crimson accents. • Ultra-modern surroundings look great adorned with piles of blossoms in a monochromatic or two-tone palette. Unexpected elements—grasses, bare branches, cacti—can add thought-provoking flair. • If your overall theme is sweetly romantic, it practically begs for the blushing pinks and reds mingled with whites and creams.

• Floral centerpieces are lovely, but make sure they don’t block guests from seeing each other’s faces or emit an especially strong fragrance. Consider “floral chandeliers,” or hanging baskets, as an alternative. • Take a look around your venue and spot any nooks, crannies, or structural elements like beams or pillars that would look great holding a floral arrangement, garland, sheaf of ornamental grass, crystal vase of purple berries, peacock feathers…. • Have someone gather the florals from your ceremony to repurpose at your reception venue.

• Floral displays add sweetness to a dessert table (you can even add edible blooms to your cake) and freshen a powder room. • Create one or more floral photo backdrops for your guests. Drape garlands around a rustic bench or create a bank of blooms on either end. • Delicate bud vases make lovely table decor and party favors. • A rustic barn wedding is well suited to loosely gathered floral pieces, earth tones, warm colors, and plenty of greenery.

Create your own bouquet or let one of their florists design an arrangement for you from their array of fresh-cut flowers: roses, snapdragons, orchids, lilies—selections from far and wide that change from day to day and season to season. They also specialize in creating arrangements for every kind of event, and they deliver locally. Stop by any of their four locations and see what’s blooming at the Adams Flower Shop.

Inspired by place and informed by season, Dirty Girls Design’s arrangements capture the wilds of the Hudson Valley—spring’s emergent growth, summer’s explosion of color and bounty, fall’s abundance of foliage, flower, and fruit. Even winter offers hardy, textural foliage and striking architectural forms. We are committed to sourcing local material, both farmed and foraged, and cultivating authentic relationships with clients to create distinctive occasions.

Overseen by noted floral designer Rita Sands and husband Jay Sadowitz, Jarita’s is committed to offering the most exceptional floral arrangements with exquisite attention to detail that comes with over 40 years in the event business. Working with Jarita’s on special floral arrangements guarantees a gorgeous day for all and beautiful memories that last forever.

The Flowers

The tradition of a bride carrying flowers down the aisle is rooted in ancient customs. Whether bearing herbs and spices to ward off evil spirits or hand-picked flowers to signify a new life together, the bridal bouquet has stood the test of time and continues to evolve in styles and arrangements.

Choose local, seasonal flowers and greens to highlight the essence of your surroundings, or incorporate your all-time favorite blossoms into your statement piece for the day. Flowers offer fragrance, style, color, and texture, and are the bride’s primary accessory for this most special day.

Nothing dresses up a simple (or fancy) gown like a floral arrangement with a stunning color palette.

• whose personality clicks with yours; it’s crucial that they understand the story you’re creating and take the time to know who you are; • who has the chutzpah to give direction as needed and the charm to make it fun; • who’s offering a package that works with your needs: an engagement shoot and eight hours on The Day? Optional rehearsal dinner or shower shots? Boudoir session for two?

The simplest solution to wedding catering is to marry at a place that serves food, and such places are many, varied, and wonderful around here. But have no fear if you’re doing something different—the caterers who will serve you at a location of your choice are equally many,

varied, and wonderful. There are food trucks and cafes, barbecues and taquerias, farms and bakeries, and fine cuisines of many genres; here again, ask around, ask early, and read reviews once you have some idea of what sort of spread would make the day complete.

79

Many caterers offer a tasting session as part of your initial appointment. (If you’re considering a restaurant, of course, you can stop in for a meal and get some sense of the range and style.) Your contract should be detailed and include an itemized breakdown of costs, taxes, and fees. Expect to pay 50 percent upon signing the contract; some caterers need another 30 or 40 percent when you provide your head count, with the balance to be paid on The Day. 80

Catered by Agnes Devereaux. Photo by Cappy Hotchkiss.

Once you’ve narrowed your choices down to two or three, ask the key questions: What exactly are they providing? If your venue has no kitchen, is the caterer responsible for bringing needed heating and refrigeration, or are you? What levels of service do they offer, and who will be providing it? (Plated service of a multi-course, sit-down dinner requires more staff, time, and tableware than a family-style meal, for example.) Can they help you locate rental tables, chairs, linens, and other mealtime needs?

Wedding fare has come light years beyond the era of RSVP cards demanding that a guest choose the chicken or the beef; even at a formal wedding, there are no compulsory courses. If shrimp cocktail and prime rib are in your dreams and in your budget, have at it, but it’s both acceptable and refreshing to serve elevated comfort food of other varieties. Feel free to base your menu around lifelong favorites, that special dish you discovered together,

or something Grandma used to make. If your union brings together different cultures (and whose doesn’t, really?), find ways to represent both. It’s thoughtful to ask on your RSVP card and get a head count of vegetarians, gluten avoiders, and other relevant food concerns. That said, caterers can work their magic on fresh local ingredients to create meatless and even vegan choices that your omnivore friends will love.

At this writing, buffet service is still less common than it once was, as caterers still consider sanitation and safety to be paramount. It would be nice to see buffet style make a comeback. Meanwhile, though, many of the clever pandemic plating pivots that caterers have dreamed up—such as edible cones or cups of tasty hors d’oeuvres—are sensible, ecofriendly, and potentially elegant in the right hands.

Oh you lucky, smart people, you, getting married at the epicenter of a seismic wave of beverage revolution. If you decide you’d like to feature a Hudson Valley craft beverage at your Hudson Valley wedding, you have more choices of beer, fine wine, cider, and distilled drinks than ever before (check our sister publication, VISITVortex, for more about the scene).

Most couples decide to offer at least beer and wine, along with soft drinks, but there’s no law that says you have to do that. Only you know your crew and their preferences. On the subject of soft drinks, it’s nice to have water, a coffee and tea station, and a festive yet nonalcoholic choice that’s not soda pop.

Guests typically consume two drinks apiece in the first hour of open bar, and one per hour after that; for a five-hour reception, then, six drinks per guest is typical and allowing for seven should mean you’ll have plenty.

The simple way to begin finding someone to serve beverages at your reception is to ask your caterer for suggestions. They probably have a good idea of who can do a good job providing whatever you need. Most of our area’s fine drink shops will happily help you select whatever you need and deliver to your venue, but you’ll still need the barware, some bartenders—and the bar itself, if one doesn’t exist— and your caterer will know where to find it. 91

Rule of thumb: A bottle of wine holds seven glasses, a bottle of

spirits about a dozen drinks. There are numerous formulas offered on various websites for how to break down the mix of wine, beer, and hard liquor, but none can take the place of your knowledge of your people and their preferences.

Don’t be afraid to save money on the “Champagne” toast by pouring prosecco or cava. (Champagne “towers” can be just as visually stunning with these alternative sparklies as well.) A tasteful solution to the question of full bar vs. just beer and wine is to offer an open bar consisting 92

of beer, wine, cider, and your signature wedding cocktail. A vodka-based drink is the safest crowd-pleasing choice. And offer a virgin version for those who want to drink your health without any side effects; modern craft “mocktails” can be made exquisitely crafty and tasty.

six drinks per guest is typical and allowing for seven should mean you’ll have plenty. Of course, not everyone will drink that much, but it’s important to remember that some will go half-finished, and that leftover bottles make dandy gifts.

(wedding)

cake

C

ake has been a symbol of prosperity and good fortune since ancient Rome, although both its role and flavor

were a bit different. Originally, cakes of wheat or barley were broken over the bride’s head at the conclusion of the ceremony, after which the couple would eat the crumbs

together as a symbolic first meal. Sounds a bit bland, to say nothing of the negative impact on one’s hairstyle.

Photo by Love Me Do Photography

By medieval times, marrying couples had decided that they could get just as much good luck from something a little tastier, and a typical wedding of that era would feature stacks of cookies, scones, and buns; if you could kiss over the tower without it toppling, your union would be blessed with good fortune. Later, meat pies enjoyed a period of popularity; it wasn’t until the 17th century that cakes began to dominate. Today’s wedding cake is whatever you want it to be, whether that’s a multi-tiered marvel of fondant flowers or a vast array of fancy cupcakes. Jewel tones, metallics, and bright, primary colors splatter-painted on white or black have expanded the palette. Asymmetrics, architectural details, and flower blossoms add unique flair, and new trends in presentation include a cake swing (yes, a swing for your cake). Choose a design that complements your venue and decor. 95

A dessert table or station can be yet another delightful and memorable feature of your reception, as decorative as it is delicious. The options are practically endless. Ice cream stand with make-your-own-sundae toppings? Towers of cookies and brownies for a sumptuous medieval touch? A tree or wall of whimsical frosted doughnuts? Different flavors of fudge? Individual cups of pudding? Think about your special childhood favorites and consider incorporating them. Definitely include some gluten-free and vegan choices, along with fruit and cheese. Whatever dessert table you concoct, it should tempt your guests into just one last bite on this special day and leave them feeling perfectly pampered. 96

A layer of flavorful buttercream under the satiny fondant? Custard filling? Wedding cakes generally cost from $3 to $30 a slice, depending on how complicated you want to get. Beautiful and delicious options can come in simple forms, too: Make the presentation lovely with the perfect table linen, floral surroundings and topper. This is yet another instance in which the golden rules of wedding planning apply. Begin your search for a baker early—at least six months before your wedding—and start with recommendations and online portfolios, then move to appointments and samplings with the best prospects. Some of the finest bakers anywhere on the planet make their magic here; one of them will be able to create something delicious that makes a statement that’s uniquely you.

Nothing speaks “wedding” more than a perfect, beautiful dress. Pair it with your partner’s ap-

parel and a gorgeously attired bridal party, and a wonderful celebration is sure to follow.

Bridal wear has always been statement wear, and in 2022, the statement you want to make is up to you.

105

the basics

You will, of course, want to consider the season and the setting and choose your outfits accordingly. Remember, the two of you can agree on any color in the rainbow. Consider thinking out of the blackand-white box and going bold with matched pastels, jewel tones, or even neon, and complementary shades for the wedding party.

Before you go shopping on the ground, go window-shopping in cyberspace: Check out classic looks, backless beauties, extravaganzas of beading and fluttering lace, florals, and fashion-forward

Bridal wear has always been statement wear, and in 2022—like everything else about this getting-married thing—the statement you want to make is up to you. But do go big. Sparkle some, or sparkle plenty. Flow like satin water. Be the magnet that draws every eye. And try to plan six months to a year in advance.

The idea of a second look—a reception outfit that’s gorgeous but more wearer-friendly than a formal gown—is gaining in popularity, whether we’re talking about a gown that converts or a whole new ensemble.

asymmetrics. Get a feel for the ways various fabrics drape in a well-cut suit. You may end up finding inspiration in unlikely places. Use impossible, budget-busting designers whose work you love as a template for knowing what features matter most to you. Want to be a corseted wonder of lace piled high for the ceremony, but not so sure about how that will work for feasting and dancing? That’s exactly why the idea of a second look—a reception outfit that’s gorgeous but more wearer-friendly than a formal gown—is gaining in popularity, whether we’re talking about a gown that converts or a whole new ensemble.

You want to walk in there feeling put together and on point—it’ll give the sales folk an idea of who you are, helping them make better suggestions—and everything looks better with confidence. • Make appointments a couple of weeks in advance.

108

Photo by Jenn Morse Wedding Collective.

• Wear seamless, strapless nude or neutral undies. After you’ve made your choice, the sales folk can advise you about what undergarments will work with your gown. You’ll want to buy those and wear them to fittings. • Thinking about an updo or a French braid? Give it a dry run on your shopping trip to get a better sense of the full effect. • Have your companion take photos from every angle. If you’re still undecided after shopping, go over the photos together over drinks or lunch.

• The standard rules still make a great guideline: a tuxedo or fancy threepiece in wool, silk, or a blend, in black, midnight blue, or charcoal, complements a formal wedding like nothing else. You’ll want to arrange alterations two to three months in advance.

• For an outdoor wedding, barn wedding, or other, more casual setting, a lighter-colored three-button three-piece is a good choice, and one you’re likely to get more wear out of in the future. If you’re going with a tux, unless you’re often summoned to black-tie dos, consider renting.

• Don’t forget the accessories! Your clothier or tailor can help you make sure you get the right shirt, tie, pocket square, socks, and suspenders. Lace-up black Oxfords or Derby shoes go with everything—polished, of course.

• If formal occasions are a regular part of your life, consider splurging on a bespoke suit. You will look and feel superb.

Before you go shopping on the ground, go window-shopping in cyberspace.

You’re designing the look here, so of course you get to dress the wedding party. But don’t get too tyrannical. These are people you love, and you want them to love the way they look in your photos and the way they feel all day. In your decisions about color, silhouette, length, and accessories, get enough input to make sure that no one will be stuck with a look they absolutely hate. Pre-select some looks you love, get the crew together for coffee, and talk that stuff through. Color swatches are your ally here. Bring swatches of personal favorites to a gown fitting so you can get 110

an idea of the absolute best pop or most gracefully subtle shading. With a little basic photo editing, you can put photos together and see how outfits look side by side. Consider mismatched wedding party garb pulled together by one element or another—different styles in the same color, or various colors in the same style. It can make for a splendid look and give your attendants a little more room for self-expression. Just be clear about what you do want, choosing color families, hemlines, or fabrics that will play well together and will satisfy your ultimate vision of your wedding day.

hair dos & don’ts by anne pyburn craig

Along with your outfit and makeup, your hairstyle is a critical aspect of your wedding ensemble. Rehearse your wedding-day hair ahead of time, ideally before a dress fitting so you'll know whether the combination works for the effect you want; don’t forget to include whatever jewelry

you intend to wear. A dress with a dramatic back design or intricate collar detail may practically demand an updo; some flowing, simple looks dazzle most with cascading waves of curls. Try something different and fun—just don’t try it for the very first time on your wedding day.

From classic to modern, the right style is important.

Get tips from your hairdresser now about how to maintain the look; the morning of your wedding, a detail like that might get lost in the overall excitement. They’ll probably have a good idea of the right product to use for a soft but durable hold and some tips for wearing your new style with grace and ease. If you’re not hiring a stylist for the day-of, bring along a savvy friend who can watch what your hairdresser does with an eagle eye. A classic updo—a chignon, a bun, or a twist—never goes out of style. It highlights your profile and neckline like nothing else. Make sure you feel comfortable: You’ll be wearing it this way for hours, through a meal and some exuberant dance moves. An intricate ‘do is great if it works well with your hair’s length and texture, but don’t get so fancy you can’t cut loose on the dance floor for fear of wrecking your hair. 113

And don’t let anyone talk you into something so formal or fussy it feels austere, chilly, or dated. You’ll be looking at this hairstyle in photos for years, as will any descendants and probably some close friends. You want it to look like you, your best you, not like a cartoon schoolmarm meme. An adjustment as simple as being worn at the nape of your neck rather than high on the crown of your head can transform a classic chignon or bun from prissy to chic. If you’re planning to wear your hair down, consider a loose braid, low ponytail, or other style that keeps your locks (aside from those carefully chosen wisps and tendrils) out of your face. Again, gorgeous but wearable is the key. Be bold about incorporating flowers, feathers, silk, or jewels. Why not do a bit of both? A fancy braided chignon for the ceremony—that can be let down into cascading locks for the dance floor—has decidedly romantic implications. 114

It goes without saying that you want to glow on your special day. Take a little time to play with effects in the months and weeks leading up to your wedding, checking out options for your eyes and lips. Getting some practice in beforehand will be invaluable if you’re doing it yourself the day-of; if you have a makeup artist or a friend, you’ll be able to give them expert guidance in getting the look you want. Foundation, even if you don’t bother with it every day, will help keep your skin looking picture-perfect through hours of celebration and photo-ops. To 118

get the shade right, dab a couple samples at your jawline in natural light until one of them disappears. (Natural light is always best for makeup choices and application.) Choose the right formula by assessing your makeup-free face first thing in the morning to spot dry or oily patches; if you tend toward oily, choose a sheer formula, while drier skin calls for a hydrating whip. Apply concealer that’s one shade lighter first, then apply and blend with a sponge. Sheer blush will highlight your features and enhance your natural glow. Choose a shade close to your skin tone for just under

your cheekbones and alongside your nose, then smile and brush the next lightest shade onto the apples of your cheeks. Use powder if your skin is oily, cream if it’s drier, and blend with a big, soft brush. To avoid looking overdone or artificial, it’s a good idea to choose either eyes or lips as a focal point feature and go minimalist with the other: • For fabulous eyes, start with a shimmery cream shadow a shade darker than the skin on your lids, then brush a slightly darker matte shadow from lashes to crease. Next comes an eyelash curler followed by a double coat of mascara. To get liner perfect, use a brush and apply waterproof gel from inner to outer corner. Start with dashes that get slightly thicker as you near the outer corner of your eye, then connect them into a smooth line.

• Lush lips that last and last can be achieved with an undercoat of color from your tube or compact, a layer of translucent powder, and another layer of color over that. To keep your look at its best, delegate a bridesmaid or your planner who’ll hang onto your emergency kit for the day: a custom palette loaded with a little of each product you’re wearing for touch-ups, cotton swabs, blotting paper, mini-brushes, hair spray or gel, wipes, and a bottle of cooling spray. 119

Choosing a Ring and Other Bling

j e w e l ry

The ancient Romans believed that there was a vein leading directly from the fourth finger of the left hand to the heart. They called it

It’s a handy (a-hem) code for “I’m committed” and so much more: the soaring feeling you get in your heart glancing down at it, the

comfort of touching it. Vein or no vein, a lovely wedding ring feels like a direct line to the heart chakra for sure; your wedding rings will hold a meaning and magic all their own.

Depending on your gown and hairstyle choices, a tiara or headband may be just the thing to top everything off; if you’re wearing a fancy updo that commands attention, a sparkling brooch as an accent can be stunning.

So get a design that you love, whether that’s the simplicity of a band of yellow gold, an Irish Claddagh, an infinity twist, eternity band, or something you dream up with your jeweler. Wear it on that finger and people will make the default assumption. Platinum is said to represent purity, rarity, strength, and everlasting true love. Gold is said to represent passion, prosperity, illumination, and a bright future. Silver means serenity, purity, and wisdom.

We say your wedding ring means exactly whatever the two of you decide it does, probably all of these things and more. Nontraditional metal and design choices can be exquisitely beautiful and save you enough money to upgrade substantially on food, décor, or some other key element. Just make sure your choice is durable and comfortable enough to wear everywhere. Your jeweler can advise you on the advantages and disadvantages of various metals.

121

V-neck gowns work well with dangling earrings and pendant necklaces, bateau necks with longer pieces, and strapless gowns make a beautiful setting for multi-

strand or elaborate bib necklaces. If your necklace makes a major statement, consider going minimalist with stud earrings and simple bangle bracelets. Depending on your gown and hairstyle choices, a tiara or headband may be just the thing to top everything off; if you’re wearing a fancy updo that commands attention, a sparkling brooch as an accent can be stunning. You can also add a bit of bling at your waist with the right sort of dress.

Wedding-day jewelry doesn’t need to be limited to just the bride. Matching pendants, earrings, or 122

sets make a lovely gift for your bridal party and enhance your Big Day look at the same time.

You’ll want the right necklace and earrings to accent your gown. If you’re going with the “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” tradition, here’s your chance to incorporate your grandmother's strand of pearls or a new pair of sapphire or lapis lazuli earrings.

Options can be as elaborate as a soloist, choir, or acoustic performer before and during the ceremony, followed by a 10-piece ensemble at the reception…or as simple as a phone playlist, a great 128

speaker, and a friend to keep an eye and ear on matters. For most couples, the big choice comes down to band or DJ. Each has its own advantages. A DJ has access to the entire catalog of recorded music; you’ll be hearing your favorites note-for-note as they were recorded by the greats. A DJ’s set-up is also a lot easier to maneuver into a small space. A band, on the other hand, infuses your celebration with the kind of electricity that only live performance can provide.

Photos right by Vik Studio. Band: 45 Riot

Special songs truly add sparkle to your celebration. Your wedding-day soundtrack can be a mix of statement pieces at special moments, background sounds to dine, drink, and mingle by, and powerhouse anthems to pack the dance floor after dessert—but all of it takes some thought and planning.

For most couples, the big choice comes down to band or DJ. Each has its own advantages.

t h i n g s to k n o w :

• Whether you’re going with a band or a DJ, make your contract specific and detailed to avoid surprises. Break the reception into its component parts—cocktails, dinnertime, rituals like cake cutting and first dance—and make sure you and the entertainer(s) understand exactly who’ll be doing what (and when), song lists, scheduled breaks, and all. Contracts typically provide four or six hours of music; get the most out of yours. • Feeding dinner to the entertainment may make for livelier entertainment. Go figure.

• If you’re hiring a band, go to a gig if you possibly can; review any videos you can find, and get their playlist. Get a written commitment to exactly how many musicians will appear and who they will be; many event bands sometimes call in alternate players as needed. If there are a couple of strong core members, it may be no problem, but it’s good to know what to expect.

• In making your playlist (and do-not-play list), consider your people. Motown may not be something you listen to every day, but it’s likely to fill the dance floor with all ages. Something especially meaningful to the grandparents is always nice. Goofy group dance numbers? Conga lines? Your call, but they do have a way of uniting the crowd.

• Especially if you’re planning a weekend wedding between Memorial Day and Labor Day, you may need to book entertainment a year in advance.

• Your planner, venue manager, or just about any other wedding pro you’re simpatico with will probably be able to give you some good referrals. 129

This may well be the only time in your adult life when it is considered entirely proper and expected to make a wish list that your family and friends will then fulfill. Enjoy it: They’ll enjoy choosing a treat for you. To maximize the joy for all concerned, make your registry a thoughtful one. It’s fine and fun for your registry to reflect exactly who you are. part of your home; you could even register for paint or a load of patio stone. There are websites that will aggregate you a list from any website in the whole wide world, such as MyRegistry.com. Make sure your registry has choices for every wallet. You don’t want younger or strapped friends feeling like they can’t afford to give you anything you want; conversely, it would be a shame if some well-heeled, would-be benefactor didn’t have a couple of good ideas to choose from. The proper place for your registry list is on your wedding website, never in your invitation materials, although you may

Remember that you can register for experiences like cooking lessons (your friends may even find this pays off nicely), ziplining, couples’ massage, membership at your favorite museum or nature preserve...whatever sparks you.

In this day and age, especially, nothing feels more special than receiving a beautiful invitaion in the mail. Paper feels special. It adds elegance and flair, makes a dandy keepsake, and rules out any possibility of inconveniencing or scandalizing the more traditional guests. Your best allies in this process: a good print shop/stationer and a talented graphic designer. Whichever one you find first, you’ll want to work with someone

who has wedding experience— ask to see a portfolio and make sure they’re versed in the importance of the correct timeline and the finer details of wedding-correspondence etiquette. Your designer may be able to lead you to a good print shop—or the other way around, as these professionals often work together.

It can be as simple as your initials entwined, but it will add a sleek, unified feel and help guests keep everything together at a glance. If you’re doing a website, include the URL on all correspondence. Eco-conscious? Save some trees with recycled paper. Create some new flora with the seed-infused type that can be planted.

Engagement announcements: As soon as you’re sure! (If you’ve chosen a date, these can double as save the date cards.) Save the date cards: As soon as your guest list is finalized. If you’re planning a destination wedding, send these out several months in advance. Invitations and RSVP cards: Three months in advance if travel is involved; at least six to eight weeks for a wedding that’s closer to home. Don’t forget to request that RSVPs be returned at least a week or two before you need to finalize numbers with your caterer! Maps and schedules: Can be included with your invitations or posted on your website. Wedding announcements: Send out the day of the wedding or the day after. Thank you notes: Should be sent within two to three weeks after you return from the honeymoon. (Including a fun photo is a nice touch.)
