What does your dream look like? Whether you want to be as impeccable as royals or go barefoot to the altar, the Hudson Valley has a venue to make your dreams come true. Consider the options:

18

Shot at Mohonk Mountain House. Photo by Sarma & Co. Photography.

Shot at Taghkanic State Park. Photo by White Poppy Weddings.

Shot at Glynwood. Photo by Susan Baker Photography.

Shot at Senate Garage. Photo by Hudson River Photographer.

Grand: Estate, hotel, or gourmet restaurant

Natural: Park, gazebo, backyard

Rustic: Barn, winery, farmstead B&B, farm

Modern: Loft space, garage, museum

Photo by Jorg Windau. Shot at F.E.A.S.T. at Round Hill.

Once you’ve settled on your setting, you can narrow it down to two or three favorite choices. Choosing the right venue will help everything else fall into place. You’ll be better able to envision how the day will look and feel.

think about:

Season: What will your venue look like in the month you’ve chosen? Furnishings: What’s included? What will you need to provide? Does the venue have lists of suggested vendors? Acoustics: Will your music of choice work well here? When the dance floor’s on fire, will there still be spots for quiet conversation? Flexibility: If there are special details that mean a lot to you, will the venue accommodate those? Are you allowed to alter the decor, for example? Is there a place where kids can play, visible but out of the flow of adult traffic?

things to remember:

Start early! Great venues are often booked up a year in advance.

Read reviews and scan social media for photos of past events at venues you like.

The clearer you are about your needs, the easier it will be to find the venue that can fulfill them. 19

It’s here where we cultivate many of our own organic hops, grains, and native fruits. We produce classic, wild, and mixed-culture ales to express a sense of our time and place. Agriculture and nature inspire our approach to NYS terroir-driven beers. Come enjoy on-site at our Farm Brewery!

Your special day is a celebration of love and also a wonderful chance to reconnect with dear friends and family. Welcoming your guests with a satchel filled with your favorite local goodies is a thoughtful way to express gratitude, especially to those traveling from afar, and to provide a glimpse into all that the Hudson Valley has to offer.Â

You can make your own welcome pouch by using a 12-inch by 12-inch piece of canvas or burlap fabric, or even a silk scarf to match your wedding colors, and pull all four corners together, tying it off with a bow at the top made of twine, yarn, or ribbon. This is a fun chance to get creative and improvise with various textures, colors, and prints.

Welcoming your guests with a satchel filled with your favorite local goodies is a thoughtful way to express gratitude, especially to those traveling from afar.

• A beeswax candle. These come in all sorts of fun shapes and sizes. • Handcrafted soaps. You can make these yourself (this takes some experience to get just right) or buy them at your local farmers market or food co-op. These are made in all sorts of delicious scents, from lavender rose to mint honeysuckle. 32

• Jams, jellies, and pickled vegetables. The Hudson Valley is teaming with homemade preserved goodness. These make a lovely welcome gift and can be as unique as pickled fiddleheads or beets, or as down-home as strawberry rhubarb preserves or huckleberry jam.

• Whittled woodland creatures. Our local artisans are making all sorts of adorable handwhittled and hand-illustrated objects, from beavers to bears, and much more. • A locally crafted leather keychain or bookmark. These can be stamped with all sorts of lovely designs to fit your wedding’s unique style.

They will be happy to help you find what you need, and your guests will have memorable souvenirs to bring home with them. • A blank handmade paper card. Imagine arriving at a wedding a few minutes early. You’ve been getting ready, you’ve been traveling, and you’re just now realizing you haven’t eaten since breakfast.

38

Then you see it: the pre-ceremony grazing table and beverage bar. Your whole being sighs with gratitude. You’ll be relaxed and focused on every moment of the joyous ceremony, not wondering how soon you get to eat. Yes. Be that couple. Don’t make your guests go hungry.

• Small plates or traditional entrées? Guests may do well with a wide range of nibbles rather than having to choose in advance between, say, the prime rib and the salmon. Small plates also allow guests with various dietary needs a lot of flexibility.

• Drop-off or on-site? If your wedding’s on the laid-back side, you may be able to manage with a caterer who simply delivers the food and comes back for the dishware.

• Passed appetizers or grazing table? There’s something elegant about polished, gracious servers circulating and offering gourmet dishes in a bite-size format. • Some venues have a list of suggested caterers. If one of those offers everything you want, it may simplify your logistics. • Some caterers can provide or arrange for tableware, stemware, and even tables and chairs. Again, cutting down on the number of companies you’re working with can smooth your way, but make sure they offer what you want.

Drinks and cocktails are an important element to consider with any celebration, whether you feel that no event is complete without them, or want to make sure sober guests have more options than just seltzer. Be sure to ask your venue and caterer about the options for your reception before creating your bar menu.

let it flow

Open bar? For how long, and do you want to include all drinks or just beer, wine, soda, and maybe a large-batch signature cocktail?

Is champagne really necessary? Sure it’s tradition, but caterers say a lot of it goes to waste. A nice Prosecco can make a dandy toast.

Will you want specific wine to pair with food, or just a decent red and a decent white?

If your caterer doesn’t do alcohol (some great ones don’t), consider a caterer who does.

If you’re going with a cash bar later in the evening, consider arranging free soda or juice for designated drivers and those who have had their fill.

How much to buy? Professionals say a safe assumption is two drinks per guest in the first hour and one drink an hour after that.

Make sure your liability insurance is tight and covers what you plan to do.

Consider hiring a pro bartender, especially if you’re serving cocktails, and even if you’re buying the booze yourself. Having a pro tend the flow can save a lot of headaches.

Photo of Peony Vodka.

DIY? You know your people. A DIY drinks arrangement can be fine for a smaller or mellower crowd, especially if you’re sticking to beer, wine, and soda. Even then, somebody will have to keep it supplied and tidy.

Peony Vodka was created to celebrate country living, drawing its inspiration from the Hudson Valley’s sparkling meadows, rushing brooks, and stone walls. Operations take place on an 18th-century farm, boasting luscious rows of peony flowers. With a whisper of flavor from nine botanicals, Peony tastes great by itself, or in any vodka or gin cocktail. Available in fine restaurants and liquor stores throughout the Hudson Valley & Connecticut.

Located in historic Stone Ridge, this knowledgeable group is uniquely qualified to recommend wines for any event or menu. This year marks their 23rd year in business, and they are constantly looking for ways to improve service. Stone Ridge Wine and Spirits looks forward to assisting you with selections for your big day.

Stoutridge Vineyard & Distillery isn’t your average vineyard. Bringing together passions for science and art, Stoutridge takes a new approach to creating wine. The only winery in North America that doesn’t chemically process their wine, Stoutridge focuses on natural flavors. Your wedding, your vision. You know how you want it to feel and sound and look. But where do you find the ingredients for that recipe? How do you put all those moving parts in place? Do you wish you knew someone who had solid expertise? That’s when a planner can be the best thing that ever happened to your wedding process.

planning possibilities

Full-service: Great for busy folk and those who feel comfortable turning minor decisions over to an expert with excellent taste and a fabulous network. Also great if you’re planning something complicated from a distance. Month-of: You’re arranging most everything yourself, doing the picking out, booking, and ordering—the things that can be arranged six months to a year in advance. What you don’t want to do is be running around like a mad-person in the last few weeks, handling troubleshooting and event coordination when you just want to be marveling at your good fortune and looking forward to that honeymoon. Day-of: You love planning parties and your wedding’s no exception, but you totally want to just enjoy the day and the people and have it all run like clockwork. A day-of planner may be the only known way to actually enjoy your thoughtfully curated wedding day, instead of having to manage it.

Some people thrive on wedding planning and love the idea of celebrating with 100 friends and relatives, complete with all the trimmings. Others...don’t. If you find yourselves saying to each other “Why don’t we just run off?” and all of a sudden it sounds like the best idea ever, know that you’re not alone. It’s actually trend-

ing. “We are seeing a growing need for smaller, simpler ways to begin a marriage,” says Erica Beckman of Hudson Valley Elope, a local business that works with couples to create a personalized wedding day. “It’s not about cutting corners; elopements allow couples to connect in an intimate way as they make this incredibly important commitment to each other.” 71

Whether it’s just the two of you or a small gathering of close family and friends, eloping can be a relaxed, intimate, and meaningful choice. Perhaps you have a location in mind that’s a hidden gem near one of your favorite trails, or maybe you have an idea of what you want but need some help in finding it. “The Hudson Valley has so much to offer for couples who want to run away together and get married in the mountains!” explains Anna Conlan, coordinator for Hudson Valley Elope. Anna and her team help couples to actualize their dream elopement. “We want to alleviate the planning stress by creating personalized ceremonies and gorgeous photography, and 72

giving couples insider knowledge about stunning outdoor locations, where to get locally grown seasonal bouquets, or cool places to stay nearby,” says Anna. Saying “I do” can be quick, simple, and inexpensive, or as dressy and romantic as you want to make it. If you’re looking for some pointers, Anna is there to guide you, along with Erica, a former-photojournalist-turned-wedding-photographer who knows how to quietly capture those valuable moments, and Michele Zipp, an ordained minster and officiant with a knack for creating a unique ceremony that resonates with every couple she meets.

Whether you’re running off to city hall or Vienna, marriage is a legal contract. Make sure you’re familiar with the local rules. You don’t want a required waiting period or blood test holding you up.

Consider the possibilities of an intimate wedding with just a handful of people sharing the moment. If you’re set on it being just you two, do let your inner circle know by phone or in person before you post that photo to social media.

Speaking of those photos, feel free to pick your

bouquet in your garden or have a picnic after— freedom’s the point here; but, please, please, hire a photographer for a couple of hours. You, your loved ones, and any descendants you may have will be glad you did. •

Consider what means the most to the two of you. The beauty of not having to please a crowd is that you can absolutely do as you please with your dress, makeup, rings, vows, and the whole bit. Splurge on the things that make your hearts happy. Ignore the ones that don’t.

Many venues offer elopement packages that include the ceremony, photos, a meal, accomodations, and various other trimmings. You pick a date a few weeks out; their on-staff planner does the rest. Just do your homework when you’re choosing that venue. Read reviews. Ask questions. Once that choice is made, all you have to do is show up.

Celebrate! Send the rest of the folks you love a pretty announcement with a favorite photo; host a laid-back party and share your delight with those you care about most. 73

Anything your venue or caterer doesn’t supply, you’ll want to rent. Never fear. With rental companies helping, a wedding can be put together anywhere, any way you like. Tip: Round your numbers up— better to have a few extra chairs or a tent or dance floor that’s a bit too big, rather than too few or too small.

Floral arrangements add ambiance and beauty to any setting or display; colorful blooms and lush foliage can make the simplest spaces feel extraordinary. Create your own bouquet or let one of their florists design an arrangement for you from their array of fresh-cut flowers: roses, snapdragons, orchids, lilies—selections from far and wide that change from day to day and season to season. They also specialize in creating arrangements for every kind of event, and they deliver locally. Stop by any four of their locations and see what’s blooming at the Adams Flower Shop.

At Athabold, we work with flowers to establish a mood, evoke an emotion, and bring people together. Owner/creative director Shuheng Ji offers the ideal combination of creative vision and customer service to deliver custom designs that are truly personal to the couple with a perfect balance of natural and elegant. We collaborate with brides, couples, and wedding planners to celebrate special moments and create lasting memories.

Inspired by place and informed by season, Dirty Girls Design’s arrangements capture the wilds of the Hudson Valley—spring’s emergent growth, summer’s explosion of color and bounty, fall’s abundance of foliage, flower, and fruit. Even winter offers hardy, textural foliage, and striking architectural forms. We are committed to sourcing local material, both farmed and foraged, and cultivating authentic relationships with clients to create distinctive occasions.

At Heart & Soil, we put our heart into every project. We strive to create floral designs that are a unique reflection of our client, the season, and the location. Through consultations, we help our clients articulate their vision and we weave a cohesive design for their event or space. farmer, Stars of the Meadow Flower Farm When making the decision to get married in the Hudson Valley, known for its long farming tradition, you might have considered a local and seasonal menu, rustic event venues, and local bands, photographers, and other services to imbue your event with the spirit and energy of the Valley. However, you might not have considered that verdant foliage and flowers, grown right here in our rich soils, could also be a source of Hudson Valley terroir, and reflect values of sustainability, seasonality, and local economy for your floral decor. If you and some of your dearest friends or family are DIY savvy, cre-

ating your own arrangements from locally grown flowers is a wonderful way to have your very own vibrant, ofthe-moment, seasonal arrangements on a small budget. My DIY wedding customers have made everything from simple stems in bottles to sophisticated tablescapes and wedding party personals, using the flowers grown at my farm. Many of the Hudson Valley’s skilled flower farmers offer DIY buckets of specialty cuts for pick-up on the farm, and some farmer-florists also offer à -la-carte wedding personals like bouquets and boutonnieres to lend polish to your informal arrangements. 101

For couples seeking more curated designs, with specific flower colors and types, and services like delivery, hiring one of the Valley’s many talented florists and event designers is the way to go. You can still support sustainability and the local economy by asking your designer to source your flowers from local farms.

Creating your own arrangements from locally grown flowers

When considering doing your own, be sure you and your helpers can dedicate several hours a day or two before your event to do the work, and have ample workspace, as well as floral tools and vessels, and a cool place to store your flowers. Do your research on constructing the items you’d like to make. Make a mock-up or two a few weeks ahead, and have a plan for your flower team. DIY is not for everyone, and some of you will be happiest leaving your flowers in the hands of a professional designer who will deliver the specific designs you request. For those who choose to take it on, the experience of creating your own unique floral elements together with friends and family will be another personal touch on your wedding day that you can be proud of. 102

Lasting Memories

Take some time to talk with your photographer about what you’re looking for in terms of quantity and quality for the day-of documentation. Don’t be shy. It’s perfectly okay to request a variety of photos ahead of time, including formal and candid snapshots of weddings and celebrations that they’ve photographed in the past. Check their website and Instagram feed to get a sense of their approach and style— it’s different for every photographer.

Photo by Sarah J Berman Photo and Stone Ridge Imagery.

That’s why it’s so important to take the time to find a photographer who is the right match for you—someone who can help create the aesthetic that you’re looking for, who you are completely comfortable with and even energetically connect with. This discrete VIP guest will be with you all day, snapping intimate and often deeply emotional shots that will last a lifetime, and you’ll want to feel at ease and stress-free in their presence.

Your wedding is a day that you’ll hold in your heart forever, but you’ll also want some visual memories to look through over the years, to reminisce and share with loved ones.

121

How many hours of photography services are included?

How many edited images will I receive from the event?

Is video footage included in the package?

How soon will I be able to view and receive the images?

Will I receive digital copies of the images, prints, or both? It’s always good to have both.

How many photographers will be on the ground during the event?

What do you love about photographing a wedding?

Also keep in mind that many of your guests may have traveled a long way and planned their outfits months in advance, so they will also want their own documentation of this celebratory day. Here are a few ideas to think about:

guest selfies!

c e l l p h o n e e t i qu e t t e

#bestweddingever

For a memorable addition to your reception, consider renting a photo booth, and even adding your own fun props for extra silliness. Guests will love walking away with their very own photo strips of memories, and you’ll enjoy seeing how much fun they were having while you were making the rounds with long lost family and friends.

To avoid the glare and distraction of seeing phones waving in the air as you exchange vows, consider requesting no cell phone photography at your ceremony—a simple elegant sign will do the trick in helping guests to be present. This is where having a good photography team to capture those important moments is key.

When it’s time to hit the dance floor, those phones will be whipped out in no time! Social media is a fun way to share your celebration with a wider community—create a cute hashtag for your wedding guests to use on Instagram and Twitter, so everyone can take part in documenting your joyous day. Spread the love! 123

Organic. Romantic. Non-cheesy. My work is a delicate balance. Pretty shots for Mom. Natural and non-cheesy for you. And some killer art images when we can! Let’s leave behind the “supposed to’s” of wedding photography and tap into the connections and moments that are all around us. It’s a day filled with realness and that’s what I want to document. So kick off your shoes, dance with your best friends, and let’s do this!

Stone Ridge Imagery was founded by Ben Ganon and Calum Murray, two photographers from the Hudson Valley. Our documentary approach to photography combines an unobtrusive, good-humored attitude with an organic workflow to capture moments as they unfold. We prioritize capturing emotion, and we know how to find or make the best light possible for creating beautiful fine art images of you and yours.

Susan Baker’s work can be described as painterly and cinematic. Through unposed, romantic portraits, lively, quiet candid moments, and poetic, atmospheric details, she captures an intimate storytelling narrative. With a fine art approach, Susan photographs with both film and digital. Ten Tips For

toa s t i n g t h e n e w ly w e d s Photo by Alicia King Photography.

132

Is a loved one a little unnerved about giving a toast? Here are some helpful hints you can pass along to ensure that this sweet moment becomes one of the favorite memories of the day.

1.

Start writing a month before the wedding. You’ll want time to rehearse and revise.

2.

Two minutes is plenty. How you know the couple, a story or two about how perfect they are for each other, your heartfelt joy for them, and some variation on “So let’s all wish them the very best,” is a foolproof recipe.

3.

Keep it PG! Think of the elderly relatives, children, work friends, etc. That one hilarious story from college? Save it for the after-party. That witty line about marriage being hell? No. Just no.

4.

Imagine you’re the one getting married. What would you love to hear? There you go. Say that.

5.

You know it’s not about you, so make sure it doesn’t sound that way. If you find yourself saying “I” too many times or telling inside jokes that many guests won’t get—rethink. 133

6. 7.

8.

134

Read it out loud, many times. Hearing the words will help you identify and eliminate any awkward phrases. Use a paper copy, with a font large enough to read with ease. It’s more reliable than a phone or tablet and makes a nice keepsake for the happy couple. Breathe naturally, speak slowly. Don’t be afraid to pause and focus your energy.

9.

Make eye contact with the happy couple and others as well. It will help you feel centered and brings the room together.

10. Feel the love in the room. You’re not testifying in court and you’re not going to be graded on your performance. Everyone wants you to enjoy the moment with them.

How you know the couple, a story or two about how perfect they are for each other, your heartfelt joy for them, and some variation on “So let’s all wish them the very best,” is a foolproof recipe.

Gifts are an important part of any wedding celebration—whether they’re for the bride and groom, for the wedding party, or for parents who may have helped to pay for this big event. We’re here to guide

140

you in deciding what to give and when. Think locally when choosing a unique and meaningful gift—something made with love and care is sure to make the recipients know that they are appreciated.

c e l e b r a t o ry g i f t g i v i n g

f o r t h e b r i d e & g ro o m :

How much to spend? Spend what you think makes sense when considering your relationship to the couple. Abundant generosity is a beautiful thing, but however big or small, the most important thing is that the gift comes from the heart. Somewhere between $100 and $300 per person attending is usually in the right realm.

Photo by Elena Wolfe. Planning by RSVP by B.

If you’re attending the engagement party, the bridal shower, and the wedding, you might consider breaking down the total cost of how much you want to spend: 20% each for the first two gifts and 60% for the wedding gift (for which cash is recommended). What to get? The registry is a good place to start, but don’t be afraid to be creative if you feel drawn to something else that would bring the couple joy. Tickets to a show or a gift card to an upscale restaurant can make for fun, experience-focused gifts. To ensure your gift is something that the couple needs or wants, and to avoid giving the same gift as someone else, the wedding registry is the way to go. Nobody needs three waffle irons. But if you want to guarantee that your gift will be much appreciated and needed, cash is the generally preferred option as the wedding day gift. 141

For big-ticket items, feel free to go in on a gift with other guests. This allows you to give lovely family-heirlooms-in-the-making, such as a whole set of fine china, linens, silverware, handcrafted ceramics, and quality woodworked goods.

f o r t h e b r i da l s h ow e r :

The bridal shower is the perfect time to give a smaller gift, which can then be followed by cash on the wedding day. Consider giving a beautifully handcrafted gift made by a local artisan. Jewelry, handmade textiles for the home, leather goods— fun and unique is key. This helps support an abundant local economy, and personalized, handcrafted gifts feel even more special.

f o r t h e w e d d i n g pa rt y :

Friends and family who are in the wedding party often dedicate their own time and money to support the happy couple in their celebration. Show your appreciation with some of these simple and unique gift ideas: 142

For the bride and groom attendants: • Jewelry is always a favorite. From earrings to cufflinks, go with something that is personal, handmade, unique, and wearable from a local jeweler or artists’ collective. • A gift certificate to a spa or favorite local eatery • Handmade accessories, such as scarves, satchels, and neckties • Local handmade confections

• A leather toiletry kit, filled with things like locally made lotions, beard wax, shaving cream, or soaps. • Naturally derived colognes and perfumes • An engraved wallet, coin purse, or money clip • A customized flask • A gift certificate to a fun experience (think zip lines and tubing!)

143

Flower girl or ring bearer: • Locally made candies • Handmade games, stuffed animals, or toys For parents of the bride and groom: Parents often contribute significant resources to help make a wondrous wedding come together, and they will be sure to appreciate a thoughtful gift. Museum tours, wine or beer tasting passes, or tickets to an opera, ballet, or favorite band will be well-received.

Photo by Fantasy Flash. Design and planning by Gina Maloney.

Newlyweds can return the “favor” by leaving guests with a small parting gift to keep the happy memories flowing. In choosing a wedding favor, think of the venue and the overall theme and vibe of the celebration. Sweet and simple is key here—a small potted plant, seeds in a mason jar, an ornament that represents something you and your spouse love, or some local confections artfully wrapped. The gift can look quite elegant when wrapped up creatively with your initials and wedding date stamped on it as a keepsake. 144
