Sense of Place
You want to celebrate your union at a place where your plans bloom to colorful life, feeling welcomed home to your special day with your chosen companions. Your venue’s going to set the tone for the memories you’ll be making; the right choice makes for a smooth planning process and a wedding day that flows, glows, and shows everybody what your love’s about.
14
Here in the Hudson Valley, it’s all about choice. Whether you like industrial or rustic, waterside or mountaintop, artsy or sporty, frilly or sleek or barefoot, you can find a place to work with among our barns, inns, historic sites, parks, clubs, and resorts that will fit like a glove.

choosing the right venue
So here are five tips and five questions to keep in mind as you sort through options together, whether you’re looking for a mansion or a meadow.
1.
Start looking as soon as you have a general idea of when you want to marry. You’ll have the widest range of options if your date is a ways off, and will have time to linger over your decision.
2.
Have a checklist of questions to ask your contact, and try to include as many absolutely essential points as you can. Email is an especially good way to get some of your questions answered—you’ll have written records of your conversations as a reference.
3.
If a venue’s policy includes a list of approved vendors, get the list and do some research to see if their choices are ones you can learn to love.
4.
Visit at least three places. You never know what you might be inspired by.
5.
Take plenty of pictures and notes on your visits. Review them together someplace comfy before making a definite decision. You’ll be better able to compare, and you may notice things that you missed while touring the venue in person.
Shot at Arrowood Farm. Photo by Aurora and John Photography.
Tips for choosing your venue:
15
Are you looking for a blank canvas on which to paint the picture of your dream, or will you be happier not having to worry about some things? Ballrooms and hotels may have a well-established dress-up look to offer; other choices, such as industrial spaces or barns, give you more room to improvise.
3.
Who’s on your guest list? The number, of course, will rule some spaces out and others in. Will there be a lot of kids? Are there loved ones with mobility issues?
4.
How much can you spend? You don’t want to invest more than 50 percent of your wedding funds in the venue itself. Keep that in mind as you evaluate what’s included in various package deals.
5.
How does the place look in action? In your wedding season? Go beyond a venue’s official website and look for pictures and tags on social media. You’ll get a less-censored look at their event game and will be able to ponder whether you can see your own plans fitting into those spaces.
Photo by Love Me Do Photography.
2.
What kind of place will you want to look back on in your photos and videos over the years? Cozy? Awe-inspiring? Laid-back? All of the above? Fodder for some great early-engagement talk: where do you feel most you? Where do I feel most me? Where do we feel most us?

The Inn at the Ridge’s location is rural but still close to Hudson Valley wineries, breweries, cideries, restaurants, antique shops, biking, and hiking! We offer our beautiful property for weddings and private celebrations, accommodating events for 10 to 150 people, including weddings, anniversary celebrations, birthday parties, engagement parties, baby or bridal showers, and rehearsal dinners/BBQ. Our beers are inspired by nature. We start with the soil by cultivating our very own hops and grains. Animals are just as integral to our farm’s ecosystem, from the biggest sheep to the littlest bee. Pristine water drawn from historic limestone caves complete our distinctive New York terroir. The entire process, from the flowers in the field to the kettle in the brewery, is powered by the sun—so it’s safe to say that every sip of beer contains more than a drop of sunshine too!

For salads and sides, try subbing nutrientpacked ingredients—think wheat berries or puffed quinoa—for standard elements like croutons or crispy chicken strips. These unexpected add-ons offer diverse textures and flavors for a well-rounded menu. Guests will enjoy the tantalizing new dishes spread before them, and you might even be able to save some money by forgoing heavier entrées.
The Hudson Valley offers a bounty of delicious farm-grown produce that can be used as key ingredients and beautifully displayed.

Shift the focal point of your menu du jour from heavy meats to leaner, lighter proteins like organic chicken, or wild-caught fish. Think about vegetarian options, too: soy-based proteins like tempeh, seitan, or tofu can easily act as meat substitutes in many dishes.

food for thought: Do any of your guests have dietary restrictions, allergies, or intolerances? Consider including dairy-free, meatfree, and gluten-free options in your lineup so that all friends and family have something to enjoy. 30
Can ingredients be sourced locally? The Hudson Valley offers a bounty of delicious farm-grown produce that can be used as key ingredients and beautifully displayed. Search for caterers who shop locally for fresh goods.
Can your catering team cater to the season? If they can, it will not only enhance the seasonal beauty of your special day, but will also allow you to use more local ingredients, and is often more cost-effective. Design
your menu around the calendar: For a fall or winter wedding, think roasted acorn squash or toasted pumpkin seeds. For a spring or summer ceremony, try sliced melons or a spinach and tomato salad.

COCKTAILS, WINE, AND BEER—OH MY! b y d i a n a wa l d ro n
Photo provided by The Amsterdam. Shot by Jennifer May.
Whether it’s beer, wine, a unique cocktail, or sparkling juice, there is something ceremonious about imbibing a drink during a special occasion—it creates a sense of community and joy. Deciding what type of drinks you’d like to serve at your wedding can be overwhelming, and having an open bar can
quickly put you beyond your budget. To minimize stress and reduce your expenses, try blending your own signature cocktail in large batches to put in punch bowls or pitchers throughout the venue for guests to enjoy. It’s quick, it’s self-serve, and it’s easy. This is a great way to control portion sizes and monitor how much is being used.
You can also designate times when certain drinks will be served— for example, serving champagne during the toast and speeches.

Here are a few things to think about when it comes to providing your guests with their drinks of choice:
Consider the time of your wedding. Is it a morning wedding? Or will it be on a Friday night? A Sunday afternoon? The time and day will greatly impact the amount of alcohol that people wish to drink. Know your guests. Consider your own personal preference, as well as your guests’, when it comes to beverage options. Are you a light drinker? Or is drinking something that you feel will be an important aspect of your wedding? If you know that your family members tend to like wine, offer more wine and less hard liquor. To add a creative touch, consider the following ALTERNATIVE SPECIALTY BAR OPTIONS:
diy Bar A fun, creative way for people to build and mix their own drinks. Or, keep it simple with beer and wine, and consider offering selections from local Hudson Valley wineries and breweries. 38

To minimize stress and reduce your expenses, try blending your own signature cocktail in large batches to put in punch bowls or pitchers throughout the venue for guests to enjoy.
Craft Beer Bar Support local breweries by featuring two or three of their signature craft brews on tap.
Reclaimed Cart Bar A fun and stylish way to allow guests to help themselves is to place reclaimed cart bars throughout your reception—it prevents long waits on the line at the main bar, or can be a simple way to avoid an open bar altogether.
Non-Alcoholic Drinks

Whether there are young children or guests who simply don’t drink alcohol, it’s always nice to offer other beverages, such as a specialty homemade lemonade, ginger ale, or iced tea. 39

Full-service planning will guide you through every step, from fantasy to reality. A full-service planner is ideal for couples with busy lives or those who know they want a beautiful wedding, but can’t bear the thought of spending time deciding exactly how the napkins should be folded. Maybe you have very definite ideas about your playlist and your menu, but would just as soon let someone else figure out who can provide those. Maybe you’re planning your wedding from a distance and want local knowledge on your choices. A full-service planner will listen well and then take the reins, handling contracts, negotiation, and scheduling. Make sure you’re comfortable with 54

How much planner do you need? Many planners offer several service options. Here are some things to consider:

hiring, but can use a hand with the logistics during those last crucial weeks from someone who has a lot of practice. Time-challenged couples, people with a tendency
to procrastinate, eager dreamers who just want to enjoy the last bit of their engagement with their heads in the clouds, guilt-free—if any of these describe you, a month-of coordination package may be the perfect choice. 55
Make sure you’re comfortable with your planner’s style, make sure you’ve communicated your vision clearly, and you’re on your way.
Hiring a day-of (or weekend-of) wedding coordinator is a great way to make sure that you and your guests will have a lovely time. You’ll be free to wed and to revel, with someone else as the point person sorting out details, making sure everything and everyone is in the right place at the right time, and solving any last-minute problems that arise. A day-of coordinator is almost a necessity if you’re planning a large wedding. Throwing any sort of a gathering for dozens and dozens of people is a major logistical feat, even if you’re not getting married at the same time. A day-of coordinator will take over the arrangments and leave you free to love each other, your day, and your company. 56

A month-of coordinator is an expert at handling final negotiations, scheduling deliveries, and trouble-shooting. Communicate your vision, make good lists, hand them over, and the month-of coordinator will leave you free to get ready to celebrate.

The desire for petite wedding and elopement packages is growing in the hudson valley and catskills So much so that many inns and bed-and-breakfasts throughout the region are now offering packages that cater to couples looking for a smaller celebration. These deals promise to relieve you of all of the details and complexities of planning a wedding, so that you are free to enjoy your day with your closest friends and family. Be it at the top of a hill or in a f ield full of wild flowers, here are the pros of choosing a petite wedding package.
66
A MORE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE This is your special day and you want it to be meaningful. Instead of having that whirlwind feeling of trying to make the rounds to all your guests, a petite wedding allows you to spend more quality time with the VIP’s in your life. Whether you decide to elope—just the two of you saying your vows with an officiant—or have a petite wedding with those dearest to you in attendance, a small group is always more intimate.
LEAVE THE DECISIONS TO THE PROFESSIONALS
SAVE some MONEY Petite weddings and elopements are clearly less expensive than a big catered affair under a tent. Less money spent on your nuptials means more money in the bank for other things, like maybe your first house or the honeymoon of your dreams! Bottom line: If a stylish, intimate wedding ceremony and reception is your thing, a petite wedding or elopement package could be the right choice for you.
Main Course Catering. Photo by Noel Perrone. Venue: Windrift Hall.
Inns and B&B’s that offer elopement packages are experts in pulling off small weddings and events, and because of that they have taken all of the guesswork out of planning the day. For example, a petite wedding package might include an officiant, a florist, a photographer, a catered reception, and a stay for the newlyweds both the night before and the night of the wedding. In addition, rooms are often put on hold exclusively for wedding guests, meaning you’ll basically have the place to yourselves during your celebration. Each location has its own options and packages. At some venues you can go entirely with the curated package, pick and choose from the suggested vendors, or hire all of your own services.

renting ambiance and style

Lucky you, planning a Hudson Valley wedding! Between our own local talent and the neighboring metro area, it’s hard to imagine that there’s anything in the world you can’t rent for your wedding day. A crystal chandelier? Mismatched antique china? Laser tag? Tribal rugs? If you can dream it, someone can help you find it. Rental companies will be glad to help you choose complementary pieces, but don’t be afraid to let your own sense of style be your guide. If you fall in love with something, chances are your guests will love it, too—this whole celebration is your personal love story, after all.
renting tips:
• Assess what’s included in your venue’s package. What blanks do you need to fill in with rentals? If you’re not in love with their chair selection, let’s say, most places will allow you to rent and import your own for the day. • If you’re renting the basics for a big wedding—tables, chairs, tents—check out the big, long-established event rental companies to see if you can save a few dollars. Devote that leftover money to fun and unique items from an artsy shop with vintage or imported goodies. 72
Photo provided by Gina Maloney Events.
• How about renting some fun? A popcorn or cotton candy machine? (Remember, cotton candy can come in any color you choose, and popcorn bags can be stamped with your initials.) A bouncy house (for kids and adults!)? A green-screen-enabled photo booth offering every sort of romantic background? A vintage ice cream truck? The fun does not have to be limited to what the venue has to offer, so bring it with you!
Planning by Hudson Valley Event Ceremonies.
• Don’t worry about getting every chair to match. Different shapes and sizes can add visual interest, and you can pull the look together with matching cushions in your wedding colors. • Feel free to mix up round and square tables as well. Placing them alternately can be a terrific look. Or do you like long banquet tables? They can make a large room feel like the great hall of a castle. • Mixing and matching can also be great fun for china, glassware, and centerpieces. You can pull the look together with table linens, if you like, and layer those in complementary colors and textures for even more visual interest. • Many rental companies with collections of unique and vintage items can also give some styling tips. Bring pics to show them your venue and design elements as you browse and consult. • Don’t forget the lighting! You may want to supplement or switch out what the venue’s got on hand with candelabras, light strings, or different colors. The right lighting goes a long way in setting the right mood. The Flowers
The tradition of a bride carrying flowers down the aisle is rooted in ancient customs. Whether bearing herbs and spices to ward off evil spirits or hand-picked flowers to signify a new life together, the bridal bouquet has stood the test of time and continues to evolve in styles and arrangements.
Choose local, seasonal flowers and greens to highlight the essence of your surroundings, or incorporate your all-time favorite blossoms into your statement piece for the day. Flowers offer fragrance, style, color, and texture, and are the bride’s primary accessory for this most special day.

Create your own bouquet or let one of their florists design an arrangement for you from their lovely array of fresh-cut flowers: roses, snapdragons, orchids, lilies, alstroemeria—selections from far and wide that change from day to day and season to season. They also specialize in creating arrangements for every kind of gathering or event, and they deliver locally. Stop by any four of their locations and see what’s blooming at the Adams Flower Shop.
At Athabold, we work with flowers to establish a mood, evoke an emotion, and bring people together. Owner/creative director Shuheng Ji offers the ideal combination of creative vision and customer service to deliver custom designs with a sense of seasonality, integrating current trends and quality products that are right for your specific needs. We collaborate with brides, couples, and wedding planners to celebrate special moments and create lasting memories.
Inspired by place and informed by season, Dirty Girls Design strives to capture the wilds of the Hudson Valley. Our passion is to design with the seasons—spring’s emergent growth, summer’s explosion of color, fall’s abundance of foliage, flower, and fruit. Even deepest winter offers hardy, textural foliage and striking architectural forms. Often seen harvesting from fields and roadsides, we are committed to using locally farmed and foraged material. We are also dedicated to cultivating dynamic relationships with our clients so that, together, we can create distinctive and authentic occasions.

Elderberry Flowers creates one-of-a-kind wedding florals based on your dream wedding. Designer Jim Williams, with years of art and design and photo styling experience, puts together unique floral combinations in a painterly fashion. Whether rustic country, casually elegant, formal, or totally modern, Jim will create the flowers of your dreams. With its focus solely on weddings, Elderberry gives you the ultimate attention you deserve and will make your everlasting floral memories.
Flowerkraut is passionate about using seasonal, locally grown flowers, working alongside the Hudson Valley’s best growers to compose sprawling, abundant designs. Expect to find subtle color palettes and attention to detail, from the tiniest pretty stems to the biggest blousy blooms. Arrangements incorporate herbs, unexpected foliages, seed pods, grasses, and other avant-garde components, alongside more classically beloved flowers. Always seeking out the most unusual ingredients, Mairead’s style is informed by an upbringing amongst Scotland’s wildflowers, and flower training amidst England’s country gardens.
As a sentimentalist, Dennis Nutley understands the importance of special occasions to everyday life. He creates expressive arrangements that evoke nature with a mix of ordinary and extraordinary flowers. His designs are truly dazzling, and his enjoyment of working with clients to reflect and refine their vision is paramount to him.

At Petals & Moss, designer Nancy J. Lee partners with each client to create an organic floral experience that tells a story. A horticulturist based in the Hudson Valley for over 25 years, she is inspired by natural landscapes and seasonal foliage from local growers. Her abilities to transform fresh & dried flowers, in combination with foraged materials, offers a truly unique approach to each design. Whether it’s a private party, wedding, or statement installation, Nancy provides an artistic approach where no detail goes unnoticed!
We are a second-generation farm in the Hudson Valley specializing in cultivating sustainably grown varieties of cut flowers and foliage. We bring the field-to-vase initiative to life with a unique combination of seasonal blooms and foraged greenery and branches. Whether woodland and wild or sophisticated and polished, we will create a look that’s perfect for you. Although we favor working with our own seasonal botanicals, in the off-season we also import varieties from around the country and world.

Have you considered a custom gown? We spoke to our local couturiers to get the scoop on handmade bridal wear.
1. it doesn’t have to wreck your budget. The average cost of a wedding gown is around $1,500. It’s worth consulting a couturier about what she can offer you for the amount you’re planning to spend. “There’s a misconception that it will be far too expensive,” says Betsy Wise, designer at BETSY WISE BRIDAL. “Not necessarily! My pricing for custom gowns is comparable to what you would spend on a store-bought gown. And any store-bought gown will generally require an additional $300–$500 worth of alterations, whereas a custom gown is made specifically for your body.” 92
“It's very often the same cost as going to a bridal boutique, except we can create anything you can imagine, including veils, hairpieces, and other accessories,” says Juda Selkowitz, proprietor of JUDA LEAH ATELIER. “You get convenience and personal attention most shops can't offer, and alterations are part of the process.” “She did her best to help me save money on material wherever possible,” says a happy client of Barbara Kerner at STYLE DES RÊVES. “In the end, the dress fit me like a glove.”

2. it’s hands-on, fun, and collaborative. “We start with ideas, Pinterest boards, sketches, and fabric samples, and from there come up with a final design,” explains Betsy. “We move on to a muslin, a mockup of your design in an inexpensive cotton fabric. This gives you a chance to see what the design looks like on you, and we can make any necessary changes to the fit and design before cutting into the actual fabric. You will be very involved throughout the whole creative process.
“I had a vision, and she executed that vision and brought such a deep knowledge and skill of dressmaking, that astonished me,” says a Style des Rêves client. “My whole experience was such a pleasure that I can't put into words my deep gratitude to Barbara.” “It's such a personal and important experience,” says Juda. “I often become friends with my clients, which only adds to the experience. It's magical. I love my job!”
3. skilled couturiers can breathe life into an heirloom.

“I also specialize in vintage reconstruction, where we utilize a family heirloom gown and transform it into a completely modern design,” says Betsy. “These designs are so meaningful and such a celebration of your story and family history. It’s a wonderful way to bring new life to a vintage gown, while sharing something truly special with your loved one who wore it before you.” 93

“People were in shock that it was really my mother’s dress,” says a Style des Rêves customer. “I still have guests raving about the work Barbara did. She has given me a memory I will cherish forever.” Perhaps the best reason for going bespoke? The comfort and “wow” of a dress that’s customized to your vision and your body. “I create your dream dress,” says Juda. “Or maybe dresses aren't your 94
thing, or you don't fit into the ‘bride mold’—no problem! The best part about working with a designer is we think outside the bride box. We'll create something just for you, that makes you feel like the best version of yourself.” “A one-of-a-kind gown made specifically to fit your personality is a beautiful way to make your day unique,” says Betsy. “Being a part of the creative
process and design of your own wedding gown is a really fun and memorable experience that you can cherish.” “The final outfit was perfection,” says another happy Style des Rêves bride. “It surpassed any idea I had in my mind of how it would look and feel, and, I think it's fair to say, was even more incredible than the original inspiration!”

Beauty Masterclass
masking 101 b y s av o r b e a u t y f o u n d e r , a n g e l a j i a k i m
When brides-to-be come to us for facials or wedding makeup, the number one request is a natural, flawless look that is camera-ready for the special day. We adopt the “skin first, makeup second” philosophy. If you think of your skin as the canvas for a gorgeous painting, you begin to think of your skincare plan as a mindset and lifestyle that can be fun, too. One trend for beauty lovers and brides is clay masking, which is famous for its detoxing and skin-clarifying benefits. It’s an easy and simple beauty ritual to do at home or with friends. Here are five clay-masking tips for clear, glowy skin.
97
1
know your skin mood:
Listen to your skin: Is it dehydrated, stressed, or tired? Your skin shows you what is going on emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Your skin mirrors your diet, your emotional state, and your lifestyle habits. Look into a mirror to examine and feel your skin. If your skin feels tight and coarse, it could be experiencing dehydration, so you will want to apply a more nourishing mask. If your skin feels slick to touch, it might need a mask that absorbs the excess oil. If your skin is breaking out, it may be craving a detoxifying treatment.
2
98
customize your mask:
Fresh masks made at home provide the most potent skin benefits. It’s like having a just-made juice versus one that has been sitting on a store shelf for a while. The nutrients feed the skin for more vibrancy, revealing clear, glowy skin.
Savor Beauty offers Face Cake Mask Mixes which are easy to make and allow you to create your customized mask using milk or egg whites. You could even add a dollop of face cream or 3-5 drops of serum to create a hydrating mask.
There are a variety of recipes that you can create on your own by mixing ingredients such as avocado, yogurt, and honey, or oatmeal, orange juice, and tumeric.
Choose from three types of Savor Beauty Face Cake Mask Mixes: Milk + Honey to help nourish, Velvet Rose to firm skin, or Bamboo Rice for a thorough detox.
3
1.
how to apply: Cleanse your face to remove dirt, grime, and makeup for a smooth surface.
2. Put a spa headband on to avoid getting the mask on your hair. 3. Mix the mask ingredients to a cake-batter consistency. 4. Take a clean mask brush (you can use fingers, too) and apply onto the part of your skin that needs the most attention in upward motions. 5. Finish by applying to the rest of the face.
4
how long to keep on:
There are three phases of clay masking. phase 1: When the clay is still wet, your skin is drinking in the skin-loving minerals. If you have sensitive skin, rinse off at this point. phase 2: The just-drying stage is when the clay is stimulating blood flow as the mask cools and contracts. It is best for most skin types to remove the mask at this point. phase 3: The drying period draws out moisture from the skin, which can cause dehydration and pinkness. The more you allow the clay to dry, the more irritated your skin may become. 99
5
how to remove the mask: We love face-caking for its ability to soak up dirt and oil, leaving skin soft and smooth, but how to wipe it all away? Don’t! Instead, splash your face with fresh water to rinse away. If the mask has hardened and feels tight, moisten your fingers and then gently pat your face before manipulating. Feeling extra lazy? Let your shower do the work. Time the application of your mask, so it’s ready to take off right when you hit the shower. You can “face cake” as a home spa ritual, or with friends for a spa party. To book a Face Cake Party at Savor Beauty + Spa, visit savorspa.com.

After all is said and done, your wedding day will be a cherished memory; your wedding jewelry, however, will still be with you, catching the light
in sparkling stone and metal. It’s this lasting quality that moves people to consider repurposing a family heirloom into a lasting symbol of their
newly forged union. What could be more perfect than a grandmother’s gemstone, perfectly reset, tying together a family’s past and future? Photo by Rachel Collet Photography.

“We can take old diamonds, gemstones, and gold and refashion the parts into something completely new and wearable with today’s styles.” Hudson Valley jewelers know how you feel and take great care to craft a piece that you’ll be proud to wear for a lifetime. “We can take old diamonds, gemstones, and gold and refashion
the parts into something completely new and wearable with today’s styles,” says David Walton, owner of Hudson Valley Goldsmith. “We also do full restoration of heirloom pieces. Often jewelry
that is 50 or 100 years old has been worked on by jewelers of wildly varied skill over the years. I love going in there and undoing all the bad stuff and making it great.” 105

very emotional time for people, and I love helping them express it. I just put one on my Instagram [feed]—a mother came in and had diamonds from a piece she had when she was younger made into a necklace for her daughter’s wedding day.”

Some shops will be able to reuse the actual metal from an heirloom piece; others give you a credit for the metal, recycle it, and craft a new setting. Either way, the goal is to dazzle you. “I start by getting a sense of a client’s personal style and sensibilities and do some drawings,” says Barbara Klar of Clear Metals. “Jewelry is the art form worn closest to the body, and when there are deep emotional ties already attached, I want to make something that they’ll want to wear all the time, something deeply special to them.” 107

“There was no pressure to buy anything, and they were so respectful of our budget! We will definitely be back for bands.” In some families, it’s the jeweler that’s the tradition. “My parents got their rings from Schneider's Jewelers 35 years ago and made us promise to check it out,” says satisfied customer Sarah Dressel on Facebook. “There was no 108
pressure to buy anything, and they were so respectful of our budget! We will definitely be back for bands.” Should you want Great Grandma’s stone reset, Schneider’s will do that with pleasure.

WHY YOU WANT A PRO by anne pyburn craig
And, yes, it is incredibly generous of your relative or friend to offer to document the occasion, or incredibly tempting to ask, especially if you have a loved one who’s really good with a camera. It may even seem like the best idea; your friend knows you, after all, and will bring that love to the task. Not to mention saving a little money is always nice.
A skilled professional knows how to analyze your wedding plan and then strategically figure out which shots to capture and when.
Long after the last dance is danced, the last dessert devoured, and the last thank you note sent, you’ll have one major keepsake that serves as a record of your special day. Your wedding photos will become part of the family archive, a chronicle that says more than words can tell about the day you celebrated the joining of your lives.
115
Hold on there. Consider our list of reasons why you should tell Loved One to just concentrate on having a wonderful day with you, unburdened by responsibility, and hire a professional instead.
2. Diplomacy.
You want to be able, within reason, to tell your photographer what you want. There’s a simpler, cleaner dynamic involved when you’re hiring a pro. Should a volunteer accidentally screw up your keepsake shots, it won’t be easy, on either end, to deal with that disappointment. A pro won’t screw up.
3. Experience.
4. Skills.
A pro knows when to fade into the woodwork for candids and when to take charge and stage just the right shots. A pro knows how to handle every sort of lighting, and how to get an action shot that’s more than just a blur.

Someone with a talent for making beautiful photos, but no specific wedding experience, will not be as likely to know when to get the right shots without having to bother the newlyweds with questions.

You wouldn’t want youg Cousin Heather to spend the day fixing drinks even if she’s a genius barista or barkeep. You want her to immerse herself in your party. An objective pro will be focused on capturing your bliss at its most beautiful. Cousin Heather belongs on the dance floor.

A pro knows how to handle every sort of lighting, and how to get an action shot that’s more than just a blur.
5. Equipment. An experienced pro has ev-
erything they need, has backup equipment at the ready, and has thought through every last detail. A volunteer is unlikely to travel with extra batteries and lenses and a backup camera. A pro won’t leave home without the right gear.
6. Post-production.
There’s a lot more to creating the visual art that your wedding deserves than pressing the shutter button at the right moments. Selection, editing, and printing are arts in themselves. A pro will hand you a clean selection of files to keep and can offer prints in many sizes and styles.
7. Posterity.
Picture your descendants, generations down the line, getting their hands on your album and rejoicing at this window into family history. Your choice to hire a talented professional photographer today is one you’ll appreciate for the rest of your life, and family history lovers will continue to appreciate long after that. 117

come for your ceremony, you should delegate the task of creating the ceremony to an expe-
their ceremony. Though your caterer (and maybe some guests) may disagree with this statement, your ceremony is the foundation of your wedding day, and, ultimately, of your relationship and marriage. It can take weeks to craft a meaningful ceremony. It is not something you should rush to do at the last minute. You will go back to this moment in time to help you navigate adversity, to find inspiration, and to find hope when your relationship is challenged. It should not be the last thing you plan for, but the first.

ply created around what is truly important to both of you at this point in time. Ultimately, it is your ceremony. Let it inspire you. Let it reflect your values—what you deeply care about—and your hopes for your union. When I write a ceremony, I encourage the couple to write their own vows. Some choose to do this together and others do it individually. Some keep it a secret until the ceremony, while others share it beforehand. It is really up to you. Your vows will act as a beacon of light—they will guide you and give you hope when life's challenges make it difficult to stay on course. They will remind you of what matters most in your connection, and will help you let go of the rest. They will keep you grounded. Think about what inspires you, whether it is a poem, a piece of music, or a story, and share it with your friends and family during the ceremony. You can create a ritual that includes the individuals who matter most in your life. In a wedding ceremony, anything goes, really. Just be creative, be bold, and be you.

design tips for the invitations: • Consider having a calligrapher write your names and/or design you a monogram or logo.

If you’re hosting a weekend destination wedding, this is also the way to get an idea of, say, how many want to go horseback riding or take the dinner cruise. • Add corner copy for important little messages like “black tie,” “bring your swimsuit,” or “no gifts please.”

Stumped by wedding gift etiquette? For newbie wedding guests, the prospect of giving the right gift at the right time might seem intimidating, but seasoned wedding goers know the process can be fun and simple. Keep in mind: Cash is always king—some newlyweds will depend on cash gifts to defray the cost of the event. Sometimes the couple will let you know if they prefer no gifts or a donation to their favorite charity.
Gifts are definitely expected at bridal showers. Don’t be afraid to get creative: Shower your beloved bride-to-be in thoughtful, practical, or beautiful presents.
Most newlyweds expect gifts at the wedding reception. Anything from cash, to home decor, to a prepaid getaway is sure to wow. The more personalized, the better.
There aren’t any set-in-stone rules for gifting at engagement parties. Yay or nay: It’s up to you!
Times are changing, and many modern brides and grooms are shying away from department store gift registries and turning toward online registry services. Sites like Zola.com allow couples to create a custom registry with goods and services from all over the web. Honeyfund.com, another popular option, lets guests fundraise directly for luxury honeymoons, down payments on a house, home improvements, and more.
Don’t be afraid to get creative: Shower your beloved bride-to-be in thoughtful, practical, or beautiful presents.

Be sure to cooperate with the newlyweds’ wishes: Every couple has their own needs and plans. Show them how much you care by giving something that will add to their wedding-day bliss.

This year we’ve seen less floral crowns and more ornate and bejeweled princess crowns. We think these are just stunning and give a regal air to one of the most important days of a bride’s life.

There’s nothing more romantic than lace. There are so many styles of lace and each of them adds a bit of delicate refinement.

MUSIC CAN CREATE A SUBTLE YET PROFOUND INFLUENCE ON YOUR WEDDING DAY BY EVOKING DIFFERENT MOODS TO COMPLEMENT EACH EVENT, SUCH AS THE CEREMONY, COCKTAIL HOUR,

AND RECEPTION. Selecting the right music that suits your style is important—it sets the tone and creates the atmosphere for both you and your guests. Don’t be afraid to be unconventional and reach beyond the typical “wedding music” genre. Choose music that you love and enjoy.

Depending on your preference and budget, various musical options exist for you to choose from:
Classical pianist or violinist Small chamber music group DJ Jazz trio/quartet Live band Here are some guidelines to help you decide how, what, and when to incorporate music into your day: Consider the type of wedding you are having. How many guests? Is it formal? Casual? Choose music that fits with the setting and style of your venue. The physical environment plays an important role: If your wedding and reception are outdoors, keep in mind that sound will travel differently outside and good sound equipment is key. If you’ll be celebrating indoors, a jazz trio or quartet can enhance the intimacy of the space. Photo by Susan Baker Photography.

Note that there are various aspects to the wedding day that might benefit from different types of music:
156
Arrival—This music is played while guests arrive, greet each other, and find their seats. Light classical harp or piano can create an uplifting and soothing mood.
Cocktail Hour and Dinner—The bride and groom are officially married! There will be a lot of conversation happening—subtle background music will make sure the guests can still hear each other.
Ceremony—While the wedding party walks down the aisle, live or recorded processional music can create a sentimental quality leading up to the bride’s entrance.
Reception—Now that the serious (and possibly stressful) part of the day is over, it’s time to relax, unwind, and celebrate.
Consider whether you’ d prefer a DJ or a live band. If you decide to hire a DJ, go over in advance what songs you’d like to have them play, and what songs you definitely do not want. For a live band, decide whether they’ll be playing originals, covers, or a mix of both. Ask for samples of what they offer.
tips for selecting wedding music Conversations among guests are important: Music shouldn’t be too loud (unless it’s a celebratory part of the event or time for dancing). Choose music that is meaningful. Of course, there is a time for the lighter, feel-good music, but during the ceremony, choose music that means something to you and allows the impact of the moment to shine through. If you decide to have a band, make sure there are clearly defined boundaries about when they’re playing—decide how long they will play and what they will play. If you decide to get a DJ and are uncertain about what songs to have him/her play, spend some time browsing wedding song lists online. You can also ask other couples what songs they’ve chosen for their wedding. Organize a schedule with the DJ to arrange for specific moments (toasts, spotlight dances, etc.) when music will be played.
The right music for the right moments will enhance the experience of your wedding and make it an unforgettable day for everyone.

Silence is powerful. Shifting back and forth between silence and music will allow those moments when music is playing to feel more meaningful.
