HECTOR & ILANA Hector and Ilana chose a gorgeous rustic farm location in the Hudson Valley, complete with baby chicks, homegrown treats, and breathtaking backdrops. With pops of color and special touches, the wedding reflected their multicultural backgrounds. There was also no shortage of spunk, as seen in Ilana’s lipstick choice, the groomsmen’s bowties and bridemaids’ dresses, and the flowers. They even had a cigar roller making cigars on site!

Where do you picture yourselves on your special day? In a castle? On a farm? On a boat? Against a backdrop of stunning mountain vistas, colorful gardens, rolling fields, gently flowing waters? Do you want a destination wedding, where you and thirty friends can make merry all weekend long? Whatever your dream may be, the Hudson Valley has a venue where you can make it happen, with professionals who will listen to your ideas and work hard to make them your reality.

Of course, there are practical considerations. How many people will you be inviting, and do any of them have special needs? Most venues are fully accessible, but make sure before you sign on the bottom line. Full bar, beer and wine, or non-alcoholic? What’s included in the price, and how many hours of time will you have? These and quite a few other questions can be answered online or on the phone, saving you a lot of bother. But when you’ve narrowed your choices down a bit, go visit. Be sure to go at around the same time of day to experience the setting in the same light your guests will see. comparisons and mull your options in comfort and privacy. Make an appointment with someone who’s actually in charge of wedding arrangements and can give comprehensive, accurate answers to any questions you may have. Will this person be present on the day of the wedding? If not, make sure you get a chance to meet the staff member who will be. You don’t want lastminute misunderstandings.
Take note of how you feel when you first walk in the door or arrive at the outdoor spot. 12

You want a splendid presentation, tender- loving service, and fine ingredients perfectly prepared, of course, and Hudson Valley caterers understand this. But only the homework you do now can make it possible for them to delight you and your guests on the big day.

When choosing your venue, find out whether catering is done in-house, whether there is a preferred list from which you must choose, or whether it’s completely up to you. Even if the latter is the case, it’s not a bad idea to ask whether the venue management has any suggestions. If a caterer they regularly work with Grounded
sounds good to you, you can get a team that knows the venue and works well with its staff. If you don’t get any suggestions, other wedding pros are good people to ask. They’ve probably worked with more than one caterer and will know the ones who make magic.
Miss Lucy’s
Try to look for a caterer who understands the value of fresh and local foods, which are not hard to find Harvest Real Food Catering
in these parts. Have an idea of what you can spend, and don’t be shy about sharing it—many caterers can creatively adjust the packages they offer to suit your budget. Also, ask about any extra fees and taxes. The last thing you want is a larger-than-expected bill just as you’re heading off to honeymoon. Find out what’s included. Will the catering staff bring along everything they need, or will there be items you need to rent or otherwise provide? What about liquor?
Upstate Events & Catering

The Would Restaurant
Are there service options offered, such as the choice between a sitdown or buffet-style meal? Can you set up a tasting session to preview dishes? At the very least, a caterer should be able to show you photos of recent work, including both the food itself and how it is presented. Find out whether the person you’re making the arrangements with will be at your reception or whether the staff will be handling the event. If it’s the latter, you may want to ask about the staff ’s training and experience. Book your caterer early—nine months to a year is about right. The good ones get very busy in season. But keep in touch as the day nears. There will be a deadline by which they’ll need to know a final head count and who among that number might need a gluten-free, vegan, or other special-option meal. Find out when that deadline is, and observe it religiously.
The right caterer will set your mind at ease and make your mouth water. And once you’ve found them, you can check a major item off on your wedding to-do list. Main Course Catering

On your wedding day, you’ll need special items you’ll probably never need again. If you’ve chosen a venue that doesn’t supply them, you’ll need basics: tables, chairs, flatware, glassware, china, tents for outdoors, perhaps a portable dance floor, a generator for outdoor lights and sound, and maybe a couple of potties for the party. Even if the basics are already covered, there may be items you can rent that will add the perfect touch to the day. The perfect piece of elegant vintage furniture? A photo booth for memorymaking? A bounce house? A tank of helium for balloons? A trellis or archway to bedeck with ribbons and flowers? A popcorn machine? A piano so that Uncle Al can tickle the ivories while the DJ or band takes a break? OK, so maybe the thought of Uncle Al’s rusty keyboard skills makes you cringe, but you get the idea. It’s your day. Special touches can make a wedding memorably creative, and rental companies can be a great place to find them. 27

Read all of the fine print in a rental company’s contract, and ask questions about anything that’s not spelled out. Some rental companies include delivery and setup in the basic fee; others will do it for an extra charge. Find out how far in advance you need to place your order and what the final total will be. Policies about things like loss and breakage vary. Find out now to avoid unpleasant surprises later.

CAKES SWEETS
What could be sweeter than dreaming up the perfect wedding dessert? Hudson Valley bakers pride themselves on creations as delicious as they are visually stunning. Whether you’re looking for something traditional or thinking outside the cake box, you can find a baker who will make your dream
a reality. Start by browsing photos on Pinterest and other wedding and baking-related sites for pictures that come close to what you are after. Save your favorites, so you can share them with bakers you’re considering.
If you’re not a fan of the traditional, many-tiered white cake found at so many weddings, you can relax. There are lots of options. Some people choose a tiered-cupcake tree; if you love vanilla and your intended (or your entire family) is 31

devoted to chocolate, a cupcake tree can mean no one has to compromise. You might also consider a French croquembouche, a tower of profiteroles (otherwise known as creampuffs) drenched in toffee or shrouded in spun sugar that can then be decorated to taste. Theme cakes that reflect a shared interest add a memorable note. Still other folks go with a lush array of beautifully laid out cookie or pie choices.

Whatever you decide, take a visual aid with you when interviewing bakers—either a photo you’ve found or a sketch you made yourself. Know how many people you’ll be feeding. If it’s a small wedding and you’ve always dreamed of a lavish, towering cake, you can add a couple of faux layers to get the visual. Take a look through the baker’s portfolio, and ask to sample a recent creation. Some bakers will provide a small sample cake. Be honest with your baker about your budget. Different methods can sometimes be used to get similar effects, and a good baker will find a way to execute your concept at a price you can afford and/or let you know what can be achieved within your spending limits. You may be able to save some money by applying some finishing touches yourself. Real flowers are a lovely alternative to fancy frosting flowers; just make sure to pick non-toxic ones. Figurines and charms can be purchased elsewhere and added. Be sure to find out whether the baker delivers and, if so, whether delivery is included or carries an extra charge. If the baker doesn’t deliver, delegate someone with steady hands to do the pickup. You don’t want a last-minute cake-tastrophe.

couture nce upon a time, there were ironclad rules about wedding wear. A bride who didn’t actually like f loor-length white ball gowns or a man who hated
tuxes was pretty much out of luck. Lucky for you, you’re getting married in a time when rules are made to be broken and are broken on a regular basis. Feel free to add some black lace touches; pick the length that f latters you most; go with a different color; or get married in Renaissance garb if that’s what makes the occasion really you. One thing hasn’t changed: all eyes are on the couple as the grand entrance is made and the vows are spoken. The most important thing about your outfit is that you love it dearly, and it loves you back. This is the look you’ll have in dozens of family photos. Make it f lattering to the point of enchantment. But most important, make sure you feel comfortable with your choice because this day could very well be the most special day of your entire life.

If you decide to go the traditional route, you’ll be dealing with a specialized bridal salon or formal wear shop, where a personal consultant will work with you one-on-one. Most of us don’t purchase “bespoke” or custom-tailored clothing on a regular basis, but don’t worry—bridal salons in the Hudson Valley are used to that. Tell them up front what you are prepared to spend to avoid wasting time and emotional energy. Before you go, browse the Pinterest boards and other online sources to get an idea of what you love. Check out some bridal expos or trunk shows to get a feel for the latest looks. Bringing some pictures and sketches can help point the consultant in the right direction. Consider what kind of wedding you plan to have. The season and the setting will make some clothes better choices than others. Nobody looks their very best if they’re sweltering or freezing.
their formalwear should reserve about three months in advance. Look for a rental place that will do alterations in-house to save time and money. If you’re an easy size to fit, don’t overlook sample sales, when bridal salons unload last year’s floor models at deep discounts. You can also conserve some funds by ordering your gown from a salon and then hunting down the accessories you want elsewhere. But be wary of slick ads online that offer budget bridal wear. You don’t want to be disappointed in quality or fit and find yourself with no recourse.

RINGS, GLORIOUS RINGS The idea of a “band of gold” is so firmly fixed in people’s minds that there’s even a song about it, and there’s nothing wrong with traditional gold wedding bands. But before you make your final decision, consider some newer trends that can make your ring as unique as your marriage will be.
LIGHT METAL LOOKS A word about platinum: yes, it’s lovely . . . and expensive. Platinum is about five times more rare than gold, very pure and strong, and considered by some to be the ultimate love token. If you can afford platinum, have at it. But even then, you may find some of other possibilities alluring. Palladium is a white metal that’s also more rare than gold but a tad less expensive than platinum. If your heart is set on white metal, palladium might be for you. Still another choice is titanium. As the name implies, it’s very strong, and it weighs only a third of what gold does. Titanium is hypoallergenic, inexpensive, and a good choice of raw material if you crave an original 47

design. Consider titanium if you’d rather put your money into the creative side of things. Cobalt chrome is another increasingly popular option that will allow you to save on the materials side. More scratch-resistant than titanium or precious metals, cobalt chrome is a good choice for people seeking a ring that will hold up to an active lifestyle. Its light color resembles platinum. White tungsten carbide is another inexpensive choice that’s increasingly popular. It’s virtually scratchproof and holds its shine, and it is more durable than any precious metal—a nice symbolic factoid in a wedding ring.
HIGH-TECH CERAMIC If you and your intended have a Goth streak, are tech-minded, or just like the color black, consider black high-tech ceramic bands. This is not the breakable ceramic used to make cups; it’s bonded with space-age metal alloys and is used in the space shuttle program. In a wedding band, it’s light and comfortable and practically un-scratchable. It’s available in a wide variety of colors; white and pink are other popular wedding-band choices.
MIXED METALS Mixed metals are a bold new trend, the perfect choice for unusual rings. White metal is blended with yellow, rose, or even green gold for a unique and lovely look.

OFFICIANT
W
ho do you want to assist you with your wedding vows? Your childhood priest? A public official? A special family member? Some
couples know exactly who their officiant will be before any other choices are made, while others do not. If finding that perfect third party for your ceremonial moment of joining is on your wedding planning to-do list, be ready to enjoy the process and meet some very special people.
Photo provided by Puja Thomson
THE FINE ART OF PRESIDING OVER A WEDDING CEREMONY HAS COME A LONG WAY. A great officiant will help craft a ceremony that speaks deep heartfelt volumes about your individual union. Celebrating your rite of marriage is a unique honor, and the Hudson Valley has a variety of spiritually and socially adept souls who understand that and will devote their talents to making that crucial few minutes a memory that will thrill your souls for a lifetime.
51
AMONG THE MANY OPTIONS: • Elopement packages for the perfect compromise between a massive wedding and skipping town at 3am. • Chinese menus of ceremonial options: butterflies, unity candles, flowers, wine, knotted cords, handfastings, and more. • Custom ceremonies with roles for parents or children. • Writing your own vows or ceremony. • Having an officiant write your vows or ceremony especially for you after one or more personal interviews.
PETER SONNENBERG Hudson Valley/NYC, 914-522-9118 Peter is a non-denominational/interfaith officiant providing customized wedding ceremonies that reflect the couple’s personalities, beliefs, and passions. His specialty is combining cultural and/or faith traditions, as well as incorporating unique and distinctive ritual elements to create a personalized and meaningful ceremony. As a spiritual director of a Westchester Holistic Healing Center, Peter has been in the field of the healing arts for over 25 years.
REVEREND DIANE EPSTEIN Kingston, 914-466-0090, hudsonvalleyinterfaithminister.com/welcome As an interfaith minister, Reverend Diana Epstein welcomes, respects, and embraces all paths—from the traditional to the unconventional, the secular to the spiritual. It’s her great pleasure to help you customize a ceremony to fit your unique needs, creating a personal, heartfelt wedding..
ROOTS & WINGS/Puja Thomson New Paltz, 845-255-2278, rootsnwings.com In the spirit of your tradition or beliefs, Reverend Puja Thomson will help you create a heartfelt ceremony that uniquely reflects a special commitment or marks an important occasion in your life. Puja welcomes inquiries from couples blending different spiritual, religious, or ethnic, as well as those with a common heritage. Declare your love and make vows in the presence of the Divine, your family, and friends. Ask for blessings on your marriage and celebrate your joy. .
REVEREND JUDE SMITH Rhinebeck, 845-337-6996, hudsonvalleyweddings.org Reverend Jude is a contemporary non-denominational wedding officiant who enjoys working with people of all faiths, preferences, and spiritual paths, especially those who consider themselves spiritual but not religious. She believes that our hearts choose our partners and celebrates marriage equality for all. Reverend Jude offers warm and distinctive handcrafted ceremonies ranging from secular to spiritual. She brings friendliness, joy, and a sense of calm to her work, as she skillfully leads you and your guests into an experience of love.
• Ceremonies incorporating elements of more than one spiritual or cultural tradition.
BEGIN INTERVIEWING EARLY Great officiants are joyfully busy in wedding season. Don’t be shy about making sure the three of you click; a great officiant wouldn’t have it any other way. Dream and plan together for the perfect, blissful blend of symbols, ceremony, and spoken words. If there was ever a day worth seizing, it’s this one.

icking the right photographer for your wedding is an important task. He or she will most likely be with you from
the getting-ready phase through the sunset kisses. A good wedding photographer knows how to be subtle but not too reticent and how to get great shots without intruding on your special day. The last thing you want is a photographer bossing you around. And the next-to-last thing you want is a wedding photo album that contains only standard, dull, posed shots that could be almost any wedding because a timid or lackluster pho-

A FEW CRAZY PICTURE IDEAS Pre-wedding, get into some jumping on the nearest bed with your attendants, or perhaps even have a pillow fight—a great way to get the jitters out and make for some groovy candid possibilities. False noses, glasses, and facial hair. Need we say more? Take a quick jaunt to the nearest playground between ceremony and reception. Swings, slides, and jungle gyms will inspire you, the photographer, and the attendants into some wild shots.

LEV KUPERMAN PHOTOGRAPHY NYC, 917-828-4430, levkuperman.com My take on wedding photography is simple: I strive to create sincere, stylish images that capture the personalities of my couples and raw emotion of one of the most important days of their lives. It’s those quiet, in-between moments I look for – the way you light up when you see your soulmate for the first time on your wedding day, the way you squeeze each other’s hands when you get nervous, and the way your parents tear up as you recite your vows to each other (trust me, I get a little misty as well). That’s love. That’s the magic. It gives me goosebumps. And hopefully, that’s the stuff that will give you goosebumps when you look back at your wedding album and relive the day.

Matt and his team can shoot both still and video to give you everything you need in a cohesive style and package. Matt is based out of both Brooklyn and Upstate, Ny and works worldwide for a multitude of clients and publications.

lanning for this year’s spring, summer, and autumn weddings should now be in full swing. For those of us who work in the wedding industry, hiring a professional planner to help with a wedding seems to make perfect sense. When the topic of DIY (do it yourself) events versus hiring a wedding planner arises in conversation, people sometimes don't fully understand how beneficial having a professional wedding planner can be. With any wedding, the decisions to be made and the plethora of details to organize can become overwhelming, even for the most organized of DIY couples. A professional planner can easily help you navigate through it all before it reaches the point of all-consuming, and it may even be able to put your budget at ease along the way.
THE PROS OF HIRING A PRO FOR YOUR WEDDING by Christine Atkinson
Who hasn’t been to—or heard a story about—a wedding where something just didn’t go as planned? The desired outcome for any event is that it flows seamlessly, but the reality is that without the oversight of a dedicated planner,
73

“PERSONALITY IS KEY WHEN PLANNING THE DETAILS OF SUCH A MEMORABLE CELEBRATION.” crucial details can easily be overlooked. It is fair to say that things can go wrong even with a wedding planner, but the difference is really in how problems are handled and resolved. Any seasoned professional would agree that when there is an event, expect the unexpected! In lieu of enjoying your celebration as guests, is it fair to rely on friends or family to resolve issues that may arise? Who is there to organize the wedding processional and get them down the aisle on time? What happens if the caterer is late? What happens when unexpected guests show up? You can create the most stunning event on your own, but the truth of the matter is that if something goes awry and affects your guest’s experience, that could become the most memorable detail of your celebration. Is it worth taking the risk to forgo a wedding planner for your event? What are you really saving by not hiring a planner for your event? Often times a professional planner is able to save time and money by introducing clients to vendors that are the right fit for their event vision and budget. Remember, a professional
74
planner creates events on a regular basis and the experience gained from doing so is absolutely invaluable. A professional planner may be able to negotiate pricing and contracts more efficiently than a client on his/her own and can easily coordinate all of the rental needs for your event. Paying experienced professionals who knows what they are doing can put your mind at ease, whether planning a casual or upscale affair. So what is the best approach to finding the right wedding planner? First and foremost, determine what level of assistance you think you will need, and seek out a planner or full-service caterer that offers different levels of professional event coordination. Coordination options should include full-event planning to partial-event planning and day-of-event coordination. Seek out an experienced professional who can offer references and has established positive vendor relationships in your area. Most importantly, hire a planner who you feel at ease with. Personality is key when planning the details of such a memorable celebration.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: • When and where will the wedding be held? For example, an afternoon outdoor wedding may have guests asking for more cocktails, while an evening dinner reception might have guests asking for more wine. • Will there be a champagne toast? • Will you want a signature cocktail? • Know your budget and the number of guests that will be attending. • Will there be a theme for your party? This could even be a color theme. • Will it be a sit-down event, or will guests be walking around? • Will you have beverage service, or will there be beverage stations?
QUESTIONS TO ASK: • Will you deliver the day of the event? Is there a charge for this? • Will the wines be chilled? Do you provide ice? • Will you need a deposit for the order? Or full payment up front? • Can we try the wines before we buy them? • Should there be multiple types of red and white wine or just one of each?
90
Photo: Cappy Hotchkiss
• Will there be a special price because of the quantity we are ordering? • If there are extra bottles, will you take them back?

gifts THINKING OUTSIDE THE ENVELOPE… Wedding gifts used to be such a simple subject, and sometimes they still are. Folks just setting up a home need a lot of basics, and some cultures cut to the chase by considering the perfect wedding gift to be the fattest envelope of cash that a guest can muster. After all, who doesn’t need that? The cash tradition does make up for in practicality what it lacks in romance. There’s a similar logic behind the registry, designed to ensure that a couple gets what they need together without ending up with three identical toasters. It’s a beautiful thing.
…AND OUTSIDE OF HOUSEWARES It’s increasingly common for the two parties to a marriage to be combining households these days – deciding which of their toasters to keep, rather than hoping that Uncle Ed will crash through with a new one. The whole concept of a registry has evolved to take this reality into account. Couples can and do register for art, books, music,

WINGS & MEMORIES Rhinebeck, 845-876-4515, wingsandmemories.com White doves have always been a symbol of holiness, love, purity, and fidelity (these birds mate for life). White doves represent these highly regarded traits, and when the birds are integrated into any celebration of life, that symbolism is displayed. At weddings, the birds are a symbol of the bride and groom’s commitment to each other. Our love and admiration for the beauty and amazing abilities of our birds is obvious with over 50 years of experience in breeding, showing, and raising of our doves and pigeons. We are happy to share these wonderful birds with whomever would like to create a unique memorable occasion.
