10 Activities For Your
winter bucket list by samantha manzella
Winter has arrived in the Hudson Valley and, while the temperatures may be dropping, the opportunities for adventure in the region are on the rise. Ward off cabin fever, try something new, and make the most of the winter months with these 10 fun seasonal activities.

What better way to start feeling festive than finding—and cutting down— your very own picture-perfect Christmas tree? Lucky for us, there’s no shortage of excellent cut-your-own-tree farms in the region. Spots like Bell’s Christmas Trees in Accord make tree shopping easy and fun. Pro tip: Give your freshly chopped tree a small trim once you’ve brought it home and immediately set it down in a tree stand that can hold at least a gallon of water for optimal hydration.
If your idea of a good time when the mercury starts to drop involves rest and relaxation, consider planning a winter-themed staycation. Various inns and spas throughout the region are perfect for a weekend getaway, with easy access to charming nearby towns, cozy rooms with fireplaces, and in-house taverns and restaurants serving up some of the finest local cuisine.

If braving the elements isn’t in the cards for you, consider sampling festive beverage options at your favorite local haunts. Plenty of independent cafÊs offer seasonal coffees or espresso drinks, and bars that sell locally brewed beers or ciders are sure to feature whatever flavors are in season. Bring a good read or good company along for the adventure and make yourself comfortable. Cheers!
It’s no secret that the Hudson Valley and the Catskills boast some of the premiere ski spots in the tristate area. Belleayre Mountain in Highmount and Plattekill Mountain in Roxbury are beloved by locals for their family-friendly, off-the-beaten-path feel. Hunter Mountain is as scenic as its slopes, and winter sporting options are varied.
In the spirit of the holidays, consider spending some spare time volunteering for a local nonprofit, community organization, or dedicated cause that means something to you. Make it a whole-day affair by bringing family or friends along. Giving back is always a rewarding experience, and enjoying the company of loved ones in the process is a surefire way to kickstart a new winter tradition.

Grab your skates and layer up to enjoy ice skating at any of the Hudson Valley’s varied venues. Indoor arenas like Kiwanis Ice Arena in Saugerties or Ice Time Sports Complex in Newburgh offer rental skates, public skating hours for a small fee, and lessons for first-timers. If you’re itching for a more authentic winter experience, hit the ice at an outdoor spot like Mohonk Mountain House Pavilion Ice Rink in New Paltz or the Pine Ridge Dude Ranch in Kerhonkson, both of which pair scenic views with a classic family-friendly winter pastime.
Though not as popular as skiing, snowshoeing is an equally fun way to get moving and enjoy the natural beauty this region has to offer come wintertime. It’s also perfect for recreational hikers itching to beat cabin fever when their favorite trailheads are covered in snow. Parks and sprawling nature preserves like Mohonk Preserve in New Paltz, Catskill Forest Preserve in Big Indian, or Fahnestock Winter Park in Cold Spring all feature beautiful trails for snowshoers of different skill levels. Various rail trail systems throughout the Hudson Valley are perfect for getting in some exercise any time of year. 17

Getting crafty during the holiday season is a great way to beat boredom, learn a new skill, and perhaps save a little money on holiday gifts for family and friends. Try your hand at a traditional craft by taking lessons in pottery (try Stone Window Gallery in Accord), basketry (try Circle Creative Collective), or knitting (try White Barn Sheep and Wool in New Paltz), to name just a few. You’ll be able to take the skills you learn with you and present a loved one with a unique, handmade present—a win-win.
Too intimidated by heights to tackle traditional skiing? Cross-country skiing might be worth a shot. This endurance-based sport offers the best of both worlds: beautiful scenery and an excellent, highly physical workout. Most of the region’s popular skiing destinations also have cross-country trails, and scenic parks—think Minnewaska State Park in New Paltz or Mohonk Preserve in Gardiner—offer fun trails and stunning views.
The Hudson Valley and Catskills are known for their eclectic cultural experiences, and that doesn’t change during the winter. Arts and music venues like Bethel Woods and BSP Kingston host concerts year-round. Enjoy a contemporary theatrical performance at Shadowland Stages in Ellenville or the Denizen Theatre in New Paltz. If fine art is more your speed, check out the current exhibitions at Dia:Beacon or the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz.
EXPERIENCE THE HUDSON VALLEY’S MOST ICONIC RESORT Snuggle up beside a wood-burning fireplace, ice skate in our grand open-air pavilion, and enjoy farm-to-table cuisine from award-winning chefs—all included in your overnight rate. Rejuvenate with a nature-inspired treatment at The Spa at Mohonk Mountain House—ranked the #1 resort spa in the U.S. by Condé Nast Traveler. We all know how much better we feel when we keep the focus on love, connection, growth, and beauty. At Dreaming Goddess in Poughkeepsie, owner Rhianna Mirabello has a bottomless treasure chest of ways to help you
keep that focus, whether it be with the help of a piece of sterling jewelry or a crystal imbued with magic, the right essential oil or chakra candle, a sacred spray for the home, a reading or ritual, or even a whimsical gnome.

Rhianna is a well-traveled Hudson Valley native who’s found her calling in spiritual community building. “I have always walked to the beat of a different drummer,” she says. “My connection to the Earth and Her natural rhythms and cycles, along with the core belief that all things are spirit-filled, has led me to many wondrous and magical adven46
tures. I knew early on that I would not be wellsuited to the available 9 to 5 work options, so being creative about supporting myself was necessary.” A nondenominational minister, shamanic practitioner, and reiki master teacher, Rhianna got her start in retail at festivals and craft fairs, selling
It’s that emphasis on learning, interconnection, and lovingkindness that has made the Dreaming Goddess a unique blend of awareness center, cultural venue, and beyond-cool gift emporium.
“It is our mission to empower seekers to trust their own intuition as they search for tools that will support them on their journey.” –Rhianna Mirabello, owner
jewelry that expressed her spiritual beliefs in the physical forms of crystal and stone and silver. “Selling at shows gave me an opportunity to generate an income, and to share the knowledge that I was gathering about the energy of the stones, and the power of the animal totems that were included in my designs,” she says. “I learned that consumers are attracted to a very specific energy and style. Those who like my particular vibe will find me. I learned to trust that all those years ago, and I still do now.” In 1995, Rhianna opened her first brick-and-mortar shop—Call of the Wild Southwest Trading Post and Café in Beacon. “As the busi-
ness grew, I was able to begin to incorporate more tools and items to support others on their spiritual journey,” she says. “It started off with a few crystals and herbs and a smattering of books. It was the natural ‘next thing,’ as it was what I knew and felt passionate about. I watched the healing that took place not only in my world, but in those around me. I wanted to share that healing and the profound difference these gifts could provide. Remember, this was 1995, with no internet—finding herbs and crystals was not easy! I was able to provide consumers with a commodity that was hard to come by and still carried a bit of stigma. We were pushing edges.” 47
In 1998, she moved the shop from Beacon to Poughkeepsie’s Arlington neighborhood where it became Dreaming Goddess. “The shop needed a name that reflected our community-based foundation,” Rhianna says. “The Dreaming Goddess was an Oracle in Malta 6,000 years ago. She shared healing and wisdom not only with individuals, but her broader 48
focus was on healing the community. It was perfect for the energy I was fostering.” Sure enough, those who like her particular vibe continued to find her, and in 2011, Dreaming Goddess moved to a larger location just around the corner, eventually knocking out a wall and turning the space next door into a dedicated space for crystals and stones.
This is a store that’s more than a store. “We are in the business of supporting people on their journey toward healing, self-awareness, and spiritual connection. I am deeply invested in offering people an experience that can’t be recreated at the mall or via shopping online, and I work diligently to provide our customers with a magical, uplifting experience,”
Rhianna says. “And we all collaborate on that. As a team, we are all invested in giving each customer a positive experience, and we genuinely want to support them in finding the right items to help them on their journey. Each team member is experienced and educated in all things DG, which translates into delightfully supportive customer service.”
“We are in the business of supporting people on their journey toward healing, self-awareness, and spiritual connection.”–Rhianna Mirabello, owner
Rhianna may have established herself in retail (in fact, she took a “Best of Hudson Valley” award for Entrepreneur in 2019), but she’s still vagabonding and learning as she goes. “I travel to gift shows, festivals, craft fairs, and other events around the globe, searching for items that fit the vision of our shop and our customers,” she says. “I like to search out companies who are fair trade, giving back to communities, and working with families to better their lives. And whenever I travel, I look for and visit shops like my own. I love to see how others are making it work. It’s inspiring. I am blessed to have a handful of women in my life that own 49
metaphysical shops in the Northeast. We’re part of a networking group; we can ask questions and support each other personally. We all see each other once a year at a trade show and we always make the time to connect.” It’s that emphasis on learning, interconnection, and loving-kindness that has made the Dreaming Goddess a unique blend of awareness center, cultural venue, and beyond-cool gift emporium. “My business philosophy is reflected in three words: experience, empowerment, and expression,” Rhianna says. “To provide an environment that gifts each person who walks through the door with a curiously peaceful experience that allows them to explore and express their spiritual nature. essentials. These socks are utterly unlike the drab, serviceable socks we so often accept in life. On the merchandise at Woodsock, pigs fly and ninjas leap. These are socks full of attitude.
“Weendeavor to bring some color and levity to people’s lives with the most fun and fabulous novelty socks around.”
visitvortex.com
Pssst. How much fun are your socks? If they’re not from Woodsock, chances are they could be even better. Yes, it’s a store devoted entirely to socks, those useful and often-overlooked fashion
55
How did Woodstock’s Tinker Street come to have an emporium that (thus far) deals exclusively in socks? It’s the brainchild of Roman Schreiner and Richard Baran, who met in Manhattan 17 years ago and built lives and careers there, Richard as an acupuncturist and Roman in corporate retail. Like so many, they needed an escape hatch, and found that the escape gradually became a part of “real,” everyday life.
These socks are utterly unlike the drab, serviceable socks we so often accept in life. “Both of us had visited friends in Woodstock and loved its proximity to the city, scenic beauty, and vibrant arts community, so we started looking for a place up here,” says Roman. “In 2008, we closed on our first house and were weekenders for eight years before I moved up here full-time in 2016, with Richard coming up every weekend.” You can take the man out of the busy, but it proved impossible to take the busy out of the man. “I had 56
a long career in corporate retail with progressively increasing responsibility and stress,” Roman says. “While I hate the term ‘burned out,’ that’s what I was. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to leave the corporate world and move up full-time to my favorite corner of the world, but had too much time on my hands. Starting
a business was a logical next step in our journey. It gave us both the opportunity to do some of the things we do best—I know the retail operations, customer service, and merchandising angles, and Richard has the necessary sense of design and aesthetics to create a one-ofa-kind, fun, and stylish shopping destination.”
“I am in retail for a reason—I love people. I also have fun playing
DJ with the music in the store
throughout the day, and I get to wear really fun socks.”
57
“We are proudly gay-owned and operated, and fly the Stars and Stripes and a Pride flag at the shop every day.”
58
They wanted to open a shop together, but what? “The sock idea was relatively random,” says Roman. “We tossed around a lot of ideas for starting a business and, on a road trip out West, wandered into a novelty sock shop in Albuquerque. After walking out with a shopping bag full of socks for friends and family, a light bulb went on above Richard’s head.…”
specifically for some well-known night clubs in the city, to design and build out our shop. Our leftbrain, right-brain disparity has contributed to us being great partners from the beginning, respecting and trusting each other’s areas of expertise. We started shopping real estate locations, coming up with display ideas and buying a lot of socks.”
The more the two honed in, the more they realized they made natural business partners. “I had opened and operated multiple retail locations in my career,” says Roman. “Richard was able to utilize his pre-acupuncture background in interior design,
On Saturday, May 19, 2018, Woodsock opened its doors to the amusement and delight of visitors and locals alike. Word spread quickly. “We focused on visibility— to have as strong a presence on Tinker Street as possible, making sure that if people were looking

for us they could find us, and folks driving or walking down the street would know that if they wanted fun socks, this was the place,” Roman says. “We found an awesome sign maker and employed some tried-and-true tactics to increase visibility with flags and a sandwich board. Our marketing strategy also includes a mix of print and online advertising, and a robust social media and SEO campaign.” Woodsock and Woodstock are a natural fit, thanks to Roman and Richard’s intuitive understanding of what kind of sock shop the town needed. “Weendeavor to bring some color and levity
to people’s lives with the most fun and fabulous novelty socks around,” says Roman. “This is reflected in our buying strategy by steadily increasing our selection of socks and regularly introducing new brands. Offering friendly and very genuine customer service has been an overriding priority since we opened our doors— making tourists and visitors feel wanted and welcome, and building relationships with the locals as they discover the new sock shop in town. We are proudly gayowned and operated, and fly the Stars and Stripes and a Pride flag at the shop every day.” And most every day is a good day 59
when you’re doing what you love. “Our customers make every day enjoyable,” says Roman. “I am in retail for a reason—I love people. I also have fun playing DJ with the music in the store throughout the day, and I get to wear really fun socks.” More socks are being added to the lineup constantly (Roman lists “reading sock catalogs” as a thing he does for fun), and—as you’d expect— especially at holiday time. “We have several exciting new brands that we will be introducing for the holiday season,” says Roman. “Last year exceeded
60
expectations, so we are working hard, building our sock offerings even further, and will also be adding a few non-sock items to our offerings—no spoilers!”
It is hard to imagine a better wintertime gift than the perfect novelty socks. Tasteful and yet warm, cozy, and personal. “Socks make such great gifts because every time you put
the socks on, you think of the person who gave them to you,” Richard observes. Woodsock’s offerings include Michele Obama socks, Shakespeare socks, socks with bees and cats and dancing dolphins, and Conscious Step socks, which help to support causes like tree planting, literacy, and ocean protection. And now that Woodstock has Woodsock, they’re not shy about making special requests: yoga socks, tights, and wool socks, among other things, have been added by request.
“We love being able to define who we are as a company, what is important to drive the business, and where we want to go moving forward,” says Roman. “Lots of work—some stress—but it’s worth it because it’s ours. We take great pride in our stores—brick and mortar and e-commerce—and we are as concerned about the customer experience as we are about having the best sock selection possible.” It cannot be denied that socks—besides being eminently useful—can be great fun. But this may be the most fun that has ever been had with them. “I love a challenge, learning new things, and feeling a sense of accomplishment when I figure something out,” says Roman, who has taught himself e-commerce from the ground up. “Creating a business that both of us take a great deal of pride in is an awesome pay-off. We love customer reactions to our shop, from befuddled by a store that has only socks, to literally screaming with laughter when they browse the socks. We love working for ourselves—taking pride in what we do and have built—but interacting with customers and sharing our love of fun socks is the best.”

Winter in the Hudson Valley offers some time for nesting and hygge and good things to eat and read. It can also feel a bit long, with its erratic weather and chilly slogging about. There are a myriad
66
of activities and wellness spaces to take advantage of during these cold months. Here are some of our absolute favorite ways to take good care and beat cabin fever through the darker season.

Meditate. There are many monasteries and ashrams in the region, or you can even find a guided mindfulness meditation on YouTube. Make a shrine in your home to focus on, with objects and colors that bring comfort and inspiration. Try floating. People rave about the feelings of relaxation, well-being, and inspiration that flotation therapy can bring. Retreat. There are some wonderful spas and retreat centers nearby where you can spend a few days soaking up tranquility. A retreat center staycation can be more relaxing than flying off someplace far away, and it’s plenty warm in that hot tub. 68

Winters can be tough. Going out into the cold can seem daunting, and daylight hours are few. Less movement can quickly lead to sour moods and stiff muscles.

Pine Ridge has been listed in the Top 10 USA Family Resorts by Resortsandlodges.com for its stunning views, spacious and cozy accommodations, and first-class riding program.
In the fall of 2017, it looked like the end for the Pine Grove Dude Ranch, the homey, casually hip horse lover’s paradise in the foothills of the Catskills. Owner David O’Halloran had died in June. The horses were sold. The doors were shut. No one was happy about it; the Pine Grove had been an institution. Then the humans—guests and barn crew together—intervened to save the animals they loved and, ultimately, the place, too. The Pine Ridge Dude Ranch that has been resurrected is an award-winning triumph of Hudson Valley hospi-
82
tality and human—and equine— collaboration. Now they celebrate all the time at the ranch, with special deals, with new bands, with holiday feasts—and you’re invited to join them. Mike Offner discovered the Pine Grove as a seven-yearold, loved it there, and started working in the barn at 16. The ranch, and especially the herd of hardworking, welltended horses, were his life. After earning his MBA and exploring the business world, he found himself drawn back to Kerhonkson by 2012, having realized it was where
he most wanted to be. The Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Appaloosas, Paints, Percherons, Clydesdales, Haflingers, Icelandics, Morgans, and Arabians had his heart. So, when the Pine Grove was struck by tragedy and it looked as though the place might close permanently, Mike knew he had to shake off his grief and step up for the herd.
“There’s nothing like riding in the mountains on new-fallen snow.”
“David had the heart attack in June, and the doors closed in September,” Mike says, “and the horses were taken to auction. The chances of saving the ranch at that point felt like slim to none, but we desperately wanted to save the horses.” Working with rescues and organizing a GoFundMe, Mike spearheaded a campaign that
83
bought 31 of the 34 horses at the auction. Half went to an equine retirement in Vermont, and the other half were situated in a donated field in Rifton. The plan was to rehome them slowly and carefully. Mike is still a little amazed at what happened next. Pine Grove regulars stepped up, purchased the property, and spent over $2 million refurbishing and renovating the guest rooms and dining facilities, and Mike—along with dozens of locals—had his dream job, running what is now the Pine Ridge Dude Ranch. Since then, the Pine Ridge has been listed in the Top 10 USA Family Resorts by Resortsandlodges.com for its stunning views, spacious and cozy accommodations, and first-class riding program. It’s been voted a Top 10 All-Inclusive Family Destination by Family Vacation Critic. “Up there with places like Disney World,” says Offner happily. folk—can get plenty of time in the saddle. There are sunset wine-and-cheese rides and a new “Own a Horse for a Day” option. Barn and riding programming is designed by and for horse lovers. The Pine Ridge is the place to bring your horsey-loving kid—or your horsey-loving self—for total adventure-filled immersion. Holidays at Pine Ridge sell out quickly; families gather around the tree for tea and cookies with Mrs. Claus, lovers and friends dance the night away on New Year’s and feast on a midnight
buffet, and Valentines enjoy revelry. There are specials for military and first responders, and a midweek $99/night special for everyone. These deals are allinclusive and feature Chef Jeremy’s house-made classics (vegans, vegetarians, and gluten-free eaters are all accommodated). And for a celebratory gathering of your own, there’s a private 85-person space for your dream event plus all the help you’ll need to make it a lifetime memory.... So chase your cabin fever with a day or a stay at the

Pine Ridge, and help celebrate the victory of life, legacy, and horses. “There’s nothing like riding in the mountains on new-fallen snow,” says Mike.
“And then we’ve got tractor rides, snow tubing, ice skating, the rock wall, the bounce pillow...we have snowman-building
contests,

indoor pool with waterslides, a spa, and all kinds of live entertainment for kids and adults. There’s just always something great to do.”

Or check out the Mediterranean Bistro at 394 Main, where the menu’s keen focus on Mediterranean-style cuisine—think homemade hummus, homemade falafel and taboulleh, simply accented meat entrées— is a nod to chef Salah, who hails from Egypt. “Cold-weather favorites are Autumn in New York (bourbon, myrtleberry and ginger liqueurs, cranberry, lime) and the Cinnamon Kingston (local honey-infused vodka, fresh lime, cinnamon simple syrup, orange juice). On Friday and Saturday nights, we do a late-night happy hour from 10 to 11pm with $1 oysters and drink specials.”
“We run happy hour Tuesday through Friday, 4 to 7pm, $1 off all drinks, year-round. In winter, our best-loved drinks are the Black Cherry Hot Toddy and the Grapefruit Mule. For special events we do a warm mulled wine, and local cider with Captain Morgan is a favorite and always available in the winter.”
Margaritas come in seven varieties here: House, Corona-rita, Jalapeño, Rose Mint, Green Iguana, Strawberry, and Mezcal-rita. Specialty cocktails include El Branca (Fernet-Branca, añejo tequila, lime, and ginger), Rose-Fashioned (honey, whiskey, rosemary, cinnamon, bitters), and Dark and Stormy (dark rum, ginger, lime).

“Deanna will be featuring a Bergamot Sling when the temperatures dip just a little bit lower. We’ve recently fallen in love with gin as a winter spirit, and one of our favorite producers in our region are the folks over at Neversink Distillery. We love locally crafted booze! Their gin is made with an apple-based spirit with 11 botanicals. Deanna is adding bergamot and a reduced fig syrup and finishing it with a lemon peel.”

“The drink that immediately comes to mind is a new addition, the Royal Navy Old Fashioned, created here at Wm. Farmer & Sons by our bartender Rhys. Blended scotch whisky is the base spirit, and with the addition of walnut bitters, honey, and Smith and Cross rum, it is a balanced sipper with some great spice. Great for fall, winter, or any season in between.”

“Freddie is a dishwasher who’s been with us for about five years. The reason the cocktail is named after him is, while we were testing some new specialty cocktails for the autumn season, Freddie suggested something with rum. (He only drinks rum, but typically goes for fruity summer drinks.) The Henry’s bartending team had him try the prototype cinna-rum special. He loved it so much, he asked for it every shift meal after that. We knew it was a hit and put it on the menu, paying homage to him for all of his hard work and dedication to the Henry’s team.” Freddie’s Cinna-Rum Special: Plantation rum, fresh lemon juice, maple syrup, cinnamon rim

“Fall and winter drinks are our specialty! We have several menu items catering to warming the soul. We do a Winter Sandra and that doubles as mulled wine when heated up on our induction burner: Dressel Farms cider, cinnamon sticks, cloves, oranges, and red wine are simmered on low; served warm in one of our ceramic ‘torso’ mugs, made by our talented ceramicist bartender, Casey. Or serve it over ice and top with cava to make it a Winter Sangria. Casey takes orders for the torso mugs for customers. Custom made. “Our most popular drinks right now seem to be the Bee's Knees, a classic cocktail made with local ingredients. I use Barr Hill, a floral gin from Vermont, and I make a honey syrup using local honey and lavender from our herb garden out back, and lemon juice. Bubbles and Smoke is quite popular: mezcal, lime juice, and golden agave, shaken, strained, and topped with cava brut.”
“Pumpkin gin is a big hit, we just got in a few cases today of a wonderful gin that is macerated with pumpkin.”

Difficulty Level: Intermediate Courtesy of: Blue Mountain Bistro-to-Go in Kingston Bread pudding is often considered a dessert, but it’s surprisingly wonderful as a savory accompaniment to roast chicken or pork. Like most casseroles, this travels and reheats well, making it perfect to bring to a potluck dinner. Cheddar or fontina cheese easily replaces the Parmesan, if you prefer. 1 large butternut squash (about 2 lbs.), peeled, seeded, and cut into 3/4" cubes (about 6 cups) 1/2 cup chopped fresh sage 2–3 tablespoons olive oil 2 cups thinly sliced onions (2 medium onions) 2 tablespoons butter 6 eggs 1 cup grated Parmesan 2 cups milk 2 cups half-and-half Freshly grated nutmeg 1/4 cup garlic confit or 3 cloves of garlic, minced 8–10 cups stale, dry, crusty peasant-style bread, with crusts, cut into 1" cubes Salt and pepper 126
bu t t e r n u t s qua s h b r e a d p u d d i n g
cont.
Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 13" x 9" x 2" baking dish. Season butternut squash cubes with salt, 1/4 cup chopped sage, and olive oil in a mixing bowl. Place on a baking sheet and roast in the oven 20 to 25 minutes, until tender. Caramelize onions in a medium saucepan with butter and the remaining sage while squash is cooking. Cook until onions are soft, sweet, and deep brown, 12 to 15 minutes. Set aside. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, Parmesan, milk, and half-and-half. Season with grated nutmeg, minced garlic, a generous pinch of salt, and pepper to taste. Add cubed bread to custard mix and let stand at least 20 minutes. Now it’s time to assemble the dish. Combine the roasted butternut squash and caramelized onions with the bread-custard mix. Transfer to the prepared baking dish. Let stand at room temperature 20 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F and bake until pudding has set and is lightly browned on top, about one hour or more. Check center with a toothpick, much as you would with a cake. If the casserole has not browned on top, turn the oven to 425°F for the final few minutes or pass it under a broiler. Allow to settle and cool for about 10 minutes before serving. 127

Why Business Owners Choose to Call the HV Home
135
The Hudson Valley’s undeniable charms have been drawing together a unique community for thousands of years. From Native American nations through the various waves of settlement that have followed, we’ve been shaped by people from all over the world who have come with plans and the talent to make them real—or have been inspired once they got here. They shape local culture. Local culture shapes their offerings. Here’s a look at some of the folks who have come from near and far and chosen this valley as fertile ground for their creative and entrepreneurial dreams.

Paul de Marchin - From Liege, Belgium In the mid-90s, Paul’s husband John Mathews accepted a position in the anesthesiology department at Columbia Memorial in Hudson, where he’d soon be leading the department. Soon afterward, in 1996, Paul opened de Marchin on Warren Street, bringing to Hudson a whole new world of sartorial possibilities. “Back then, people would drive up and shop for a couple of hours and leave; now, they come and spend a weekend at a B&B, go to Olana, dine out. Hudson is a destination now.” 136

John Krenek and Jamie Niblock - From New York City John and Jamie had been spending time in Kingston and saw unlimited potential there. The two feel like they are among the pioneers of the booming shift that has been unfolding there. “It’s fun, upbeat, happy, and welcoming. Our being there has really paved the way for other people to open up businesses and believe that, like we do, it’s the place to be and thrive as a new business,” says Jamie.

Gemma D’Entrone - From Britain “We have a local but international team,” says Gemma. “I’m British, our chief mixologist hails from South Africa, and our sommelier is French; it’s a great blend of perspectives and influences.” Equipped with a strong creative vision, they commissioned an incredible lineup of Hudson Valley artisans to create a space that celebrates the community, not only in its use of local produce, but also in its structure and design. From the stunning 30-foot tiger maple bar top to hand-fired plates and bowls, hand-sewn staff aprons, and a throwback, custom A&P neon sign, a sense of pride and appreciation for the Hudson Valley’s worldclass local artistry is evident. 137

Cathy and Roy Naor - From Israel Cathy and her husband Roy—an airline pilot who flies between Tel Aviv and New York—moved to the US in 2005 with son Kai and daughter Mika, and drew a radius 100 miles around Manhattan for home-hunting purposes. Roy was the first to discover Rhinebeck. “He said, ‘You’ll love it—everyone wears jeans and no makeup,’” says Cathy. “He was right.”

Morgan Mikula - From York, Pennsylvania We can thank her husband Brian for her discovery of the Hudson Valley. The couple met in Pittsburgh, but Brian had lived in New York and supported a move back. “He always told me, ‘You’ll love the Hudson Valley,’” she says. “We came to visit and I instantly fell in love. It finally felt like I was home.”

Karina Cousineau - From Massachusetts After working for eight years in Brooklyn, Karina began to seek a better life for herself and, with full awareness that her business would continue to flourish, decided to move her business up to Kingston. The move allowed her to expand the company, as well as hire local talent. “We do everything here, from textile design to photo shoots; we use real customers as models. We get interns from the SUNY Ulster fashion design program; so far, four of them have moved into paid positions.”
