Must See & Do Fan Favorites. Whether indoors or out, high-brow or high energy, you’re going to find things you love in Winona. Here is what people say are some of their favorites. Courtesy of Great River Shakespeare Festival
1 MINNESOTA MARINE ART MUSEUM Prepare to be blown away. Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, Matisse – name a master painter and chances are good they have original artwork hanging in the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. From a moody O’Keefe to a brilliant Degas to a jaw-dropping original “Washington Crossing the Delaware” painting that came to Winona from the White House – visitors are completely shocked to find this incredible museum in Winona. Bonus: Bring a picnic and settle in on the museum’s riverwalk to watch barges and eagles pass by while prairie gardens sway nearby in the breeze.
THE GREAT RIVER SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL
2
Plan to be in town between mid-June and late-July to take in a play by one of the finest Shakespearean theater companies in the country. With a national cast and an approach that aims to make Shakespeare fun for even non-theater lovers, The Great River Shakespeare Festival entertains more than 10,000 people annually who come from far and wide. Come to a show and you’ll see why.
3 BLOEDOW BAKERY
Savour Magazine called it one of the 50 best doughnut shops in the country and WCCO fans have named it Minnesota’s best bakery more than a couple of times, and there is a reason why: Secret recipes handed down for nearly 100 years create sweet treats that taste like equal parts of love, flour and magic. The maple long john is legendary – in fact, the whole bakery is. It’s no wonder that a line forms out the door nearly every day of the week.

AMAZING HIKE & BIKE TRAILS Trust us - Winona is a place you want to roam. Think thousands of acres of public land crisscrossed with trails that are there for the wandering, whether you’re into gentle slopes or teeth-gritting descents. Winona is designated as a bike-friendly city and serves as a hub for bike routes across Southeastern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin.

ALL THINGS SUGAR LOAF That rock pinnacle sitting about 500 feet above the city is more than just a landmark visible from miles away. It is also part of Winona’s storied past and today part of its very active present. Quarrying more than a century ago shaped it to something resembling a lump of sugar, and today that sweet landmark is part of Winona’s core recreational jam. Biking and hiking routes to its base offer sweeping views of the river valley, and climbing routes to the top will leave you feeling like king of the hill in a very big way.

Must See & Do
WINONA FOR WATER LOVERS Hankering for a paddle? You picked the right spot. Winona has two beautiful lakes plus the Mississippi River, which meanders past Winona through a labyrinth of backwaters and islands, creating gentle waters for a leisurely paddle on one of the world’s mightiest waterways. Fun fact: The islands are public land - perfect for pulling up on for a picnic lunch. Don’t have a boat? No problem. The city rents access to canoes, kayaks and standup paddleboards (plus a whole lot of other stuff) in Lake Park, and boat rentals at Prairie Island Campground will get you out on the Mississippi River for a perfect day underneath soaring eagles.

COOL FESTIVALS Winona knows how to entertain itself and there is a long slate of local festivals celebrating everything from the music of Beethoven to our steamboat-ladened past. Film, music, theater, even storytelling - Winona’s dance card is full of entertainment year-round that has featured world-famous performers (Yo-Yo Ma, anyone?), internationally acclaimed films, talented musicians and a whole lot of fun.
FOODIE ADVENTURES We like great food in these parts and Winona has no fewer than 40 unique local eateries that you can’t taste the fare from anywhere else. In fact, restaurants have exploded here, bringing epicurean wonder and a heap of praise from great chefs with them. Interesting takes on American and farm-to-table cuisine are getting people like Andrew Zimmern excited about Winona’s food scene, and our authentic international kitchens are pure delight as well. Believe us, you’ll get excited too, but bring a pair of stretch pants with you.

Summer
The Great River Shakespeare Festival is the darling of Midwest theater, bringing together a national cast of actors and directors to entertain more than 10,000 patrons throughout the mid-summer. The Minnesota Beethoven Festival rounds out Winona’s astonishing summer arts scene with annual performances by classical music greats from around the world. And our river, lakes and trails are a summertime mecca for outdoor recreation, drawing visitors from across the country to our unique corner of Southeastern Minnesota.
Fall
The Great River Road has been named one of the most beautiful autumn drives in the United States, and Winona is definitely delivering on that promise. Bluffs that tower 500 feet above the road are encrusted with a tapestry of gold, red and orange each October, and our temperate weather means our fall colors outlast everywhere else in Minnesota. Get passes early for Boats & Bluegrass, a legendary music festival on the banks of the Mississippi River each September. National musicians, on-site camping and family camaraderie make this a festival that sells out every year.
Winter
Once the leaves fall, Winona lights up with live music, holiday shopping events and picture-perfect snowfalls that make it look like you’re living in a Dickens snow globe. Being the warmest place in Minnesota has its perks – it’s just more fun to play outside here. By early January, Lake Lodge opens with ice skating, snowshoe rentals and more, and ice fishing houses spring up all over Lake Winona and the Mississippi backwaters. About the same time, adventure junkies take to our ice park for exhilarating climbs hundreds of feet above the city. Don’t miss the Frozen River Film Festival in February, which brings in award-winning documentaries from around the globe. While you’re here, take in a little bird watching as eagles soar across the river valley while preparing nests for their young.
Spring
Spring comes earlier to the Miami of Minnesota than the rest of the state, and late-March snow flurries quickly give way to balmy temps and April blossoms. Hiking and biking paths come to life around the city with people on two feet and two wheels, and Lake Park bursts into bloom. Birdwatchers flock to the area to see millions of bucket-list migrating birds stopping through our patch of the Upper Mississippi River Flyway. Grab tickets for the Mid West Music Fest, an annual spring event that draws bands from across the Upper Midwest for a celebration of all things music. No matter what makes your toes tap, you’ll find music to love here and a few thousand people to enjoy it with.

Outdoor Recreation
Crisscrossed by hundreds of miles of land and water trails, the area surrounding Winona and even the city itself offer unmatched ways to play outside. Road and mountain biking are recreation staples here on routes that range from leisurely to adrenalin-infused. Trails and roads snake up the bluffs that cradle Winona, progressing from gentle double-tracks to adventurous single-tracks to hair-raising. But five miles of paved trails around our Winona lakes make for a ride that is just as enjoyable.
For boaters and paddlers, water trails through our beautiful backwaters offer endless opportunities for exploring the Mighty Mississippi. Sandbars and islands are mostly public domain, meaning you have miles of beaches waiting for you to pull up for a spell.
If you want to wander on foot, you can hike our bluffs to your heart’s content under a canopy of swaying hardwoods. If birds are your thing, we have those too – by the millions, actually – and there isn’t a better place to see them than the brand new Flyway Trail that spans the Mississippi River between Winona and Wisconsin.
#brockrutzen
For some, the best trails are vertical, and Winona takes climbing to new heights thanks to our towering bluffs and especially our landmark pinnacle, Sugar Loaf. Professional climbers have installed routes that will excite beginners and experts alike, and local organizations offer guided climbing and free open-climb events throughout the warm months.

In winter, Winona becomes home to the nation’s only ice park within a city limits, and adventurists are coming from across the Midwest to scale our spectacular specially created flow.
And if the weather isn’t cooperating for an outdoor climb, Winona State University has one of the largest university climbing walls in the Midwest and it’s open to the public.
Rentals available in Lake Park, from local businesses and through area campgrounds mean everyone can have fun outdoors here without loading up the car with gear. And having the warmest average annual temperature in Minnesota means our four seasons are as perfect as a Minnesota destination can be.

In The Area
In The Area
Winona is the hub of a beautiful region of Southeastern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin and anchoring here gives you the perfect jumping off point for exploring. This area is called the Driftless Region – a tiny sliver of land that was spared being flattened by the last glaciers 10,000 years ago – and the scenery this blessed us with is like nowhere else in the upper Midwest. Towering limestone bluffs, rolling backcountry roads, tiny towns and the stunning Mississippi River are all here for wandering, boasting spectacular birding, fun main streets, charming apple orchards, unique wineries and breathtaking views. To the north on the Great River Road, Wabasha, Minn., and Nelson, Wisc., offer a sweet, small-town vibe with some cute shops and, of course, the majestic National Eagle Center. To the west, our neighbor Rochester has all of the big-city amenities you could need during your stay. To the south, La Crosse also has some interesting shopping and dining if you find your way too far from home base at dinner time. And from any of these places, it’s just a short jaunt along Highway 61 or a quick trip on Interstate 90 before you’re back in the comforts of Winona.

Wineries The Great River Road has been called one of the country’s most beautiful byways, and the Great River Road Wine Trail might be one of the best reasons ever to take a cruise down it. Along the way, enjoy rolling bluffs, soaring eagles and sapphire views of the Mississippi River. Winona is the perfect homebase for sampling the wares of the 10 wineries that comprise the trail, with several of those wineries just minutes from downtown. You’ll find that each has its own scenic ambiance and its own bespoke take on how to take grapes from near and far and turn them into something delicious. Best Local Secrets
Every city has a few spots that are prized by locals but that, while not exactly hidden, might be easy to miss if you are a visitor. As a 167-year-old river town on a million-year-old island in the Mississippi River, Winona has this in spades, and you could explore endlessly to discover the special places that make us unique. But since you might only have a few days instead of a few decades (for now), we wanted to share with you a handful of favorite local treasures. Want more? Stop by our Winona Visitor Center to talk with a Winona expert about all the wonders waiting here for you to discover.
#DriftlessDrone
GARVIN HEIGHTS PARK Some 540 feet above the city is a
park with a sweeping view of the Mississippi River Valley like you won’t find anywhere else. Flanked by hardwood forests, an old oak savanna and a restored goat prairie, the park can be reached via a winding road or a hike up a maintained trail from the bottom of the bluff.
HISTORIC WAGON BRIDGE Built in 1917, this hidden concrete bridge spans a backwater channel of the Mississippi River between Latsch Island and Aghaming Park and it is a local favorite for strolling, birdwatching, and taking stunning photos. While you’re there, check out Winona’s picturesque boathouse community that rims Latsch Island and cool off with a swim on the Latsch Island beach. PRINCESS WENONAH STATUE In the Dakota Indian language, Wenonah means “first born daughter,” and in our gorgeous Windom Park is a statue immortalizing “Princess Wenonah,” daughter of Dakota Chief Wapasha and the namesake of our fare city. The statue stands in the center of an exquisite fountain with spraying pelicans and turtles and it is rimmed by bright flowerbeds and a pretty gazebo. LAKE WINONA BANDSHELL Lake Park, which rings East
and West Lake Winona, has been the darling of outdoor places to play in Winona for more than a century, but the park’s allure isn’t merely its grassy expanses, playgrounds and bike trails. In the center of the park stands a 100-year-old bandshell that still today hosts concerts and events. Fun fact: East and West Lake Winona used to be the main channel of the Mississippi River, making Winona literally an island in the river.
HISTORIC DOWNTOWN WALKING TOUR Milling and lumber trade made Winona a wealthy port city 150 years ago, and evidence of that grandeur can be appreciated throughout our beautifully preserved Victorian downtown. Grab a historic walking tour map from the Visitor Center or the Winona County History Center and stroll the magnificent architecture our forefathers blessed the city with.

Relocating?
...where everything good about the Midwest is at our fingertips. Many people say they live here because Winona offers people the best of all worlds: Winona is a beautiful, vibrant small city with interesting local retailers and restaurants, astounding art and entertainment offerings, and effortless access to all the outdoor recreation a person can handle. Particularly for people weary of the big-city grind, it is a paradise without traffic jams and where work and play are separated by minutes, not hours or days. Dozens of large international companies are headquartered in Winona and we are a leader in manufacturing, composites engineering, higher education and health care. We have a fiercely entrepreneurial spirit, with businesses that have been here for more than 150 years and businesses that are starting up every day. If you want to work, there is a place for you here. New people are moving here every day, and beyond the reasons extolled above, we know it is because of something more: Ultimately, Winona is a town that offers an authentic community experience – a place where anyone can volunteer meaningfully, a place where people smile at each other on the sidewalk and make small talk with strangers, a place where there is ample opportunity to find a unique way to fit in and belong to something that feels like it matters. There is a community heartbeat in Winona, and when people spend a few days here, they can feel it. Want to join us? We thought you would. Reach out to a local to find out how to become one yourself: 507-452-0735 or visitwinona.com.
