During the winter months, activities such as cross-country skiing, daily snowmobile tours, snowshoeing and snowcoach tours allow visitors to experience and explore areas of Yellowstone National Park that are not accessible via other methods or at other times of the year. The park, which many say is at its most serene splendor in the snow-capped winter season, is also less crowded from mid-December to mid-March, affording those who visit at this time of year an unparalleled perspective of this national treasure. FISHING

With over 1,000 miles of blue-ribbon trout rivers such as the Gallatin, Madison and Yellowstone—as well as numerous tributaries and smaller streams—producing Brook, Brown, Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout in great abundance, Yellowstone Country is a fishing haven for young and old alike. As the primary location for the filming of A River Runs Through It, it’s no wonder that this corner of Montana has become a fly fishing mandatory. But it’s not all fly vests and wicker creoles, either; plenty of folks hit the rivers with spinning rods. The best fly fishing runs from late June through October, though conditions are often good in March and April before spring runoff. With up to 3,000 fish per mile in the many Yellowstone Country streams, regulations generally allow liberal catch limits. Obtain permission before you enter or cross private land. Consult local fly shops for specific tackle recommendations. For streamflow, license, boating and fishing regulations visit fwp.mt.gov.
