From Chains to Change An Evolution of African-American History

Day 1 The Stories of History Enjoy breakfast at your hotel then begin your day at the Museum of York County where you’ll find a collection of more than 200 artfully mounted African animals along with an outstanding assortment of cultural artifacts and musical instruments. Lunch will be at The Garden Café nestled in the historic City of York. Time will be allowed to visit the Market Gift Shop where you will find a wonderful and unique selection of handmade items and upcycled treasures that will surely catch your eye. Continue your day by traveling to Filbert, SC to to meet renowned author and farmer, Dori Sanders. For Dori, farm life and writing go hand in hand. It's the richness of place that serves as a wellspring for her writings. Dori can be found most days (from Memorial Day to Labor Day) at her family's peach stand in Filbert, South Carolina, selling peaches, autographing her books and telling stories of farm life and local southern folklore. Next, travel to McCrory’s lunch counter in Rock Hill to learn how a group of nine African-American college students gained nationwide attention by following an untried strategy called "jail, no bail” sit-in. Learn about this remarkable group, the Friendship Nine, and their courageous act. McCrory’s, now known as Five & Dine, will be your stop for dinner.

Day 2 Educating for Change After breakfast, start your day with more evidence of change. Travel a short distance to the Carroll School. Built in 1929, this Rosenwald School building was part of philanthropist Julius Rosenwald’s dream to provide equal education to all children. Mr. Rosenwald provided the seed money for over five thousand schools, shops and teachers' homes in the United States, which were built primarily for the education of African-Americans in the early twentieth century. The next stop on your journey is Historic Brattonsville, which is a 775-acre internationally-known historical site and living history farm. It is one of the most important and heavily visited cultural attractions in South Carolina. Historic Brattonsville stands as a testament to the pioneering spirit and industry of the Bratton family and to the hard work and sacrifice of their descendants and slaves. It is also known for being one of the film sites of Mel Gibson’s epic, The Patriot. While on your visit, you will enjoy a guided interpretation of what slave life was like during the 1700’s and 1800’s in the rural south.
