Box and Whisker Plots

Box and Whisker Plots Box and Whisker Plots We generally come across many types of the plots or the diagrams or the graphs while studying the math in the context of the descriptive type of the statistics for example the stem and the leaf plot and many more. One such type of the diagrams or the plots is the box and whisker plot about which we will discuss in this article. A Box and Whisker Plot or diagram in the context of the descriptive type of the statistics is a very friendly way of depicting the groups of the numerical type of the data in a graphical manner with the help of the 5 number summaries which are stated as follows. The observation which is the smallest that is the minimum of the sample, the quartile which is lower and which is denoted by Q1, the median which is denoted by Q2, the quartile which is upper and which is denoted by Q3 and the observation which is the largest that is the maximum of the sample. We have already given the definition of the box and whisker plot in the last paragraph so we will understand the box and whisker plot in this paragraph in a more precise manner.

The box and whisker plot is generally utilized to show a group of the data for the purpose that we can very clearly check that where the much of the numbers are. Not let us understand this thing more clearly with the help of a very good example. Let us assume that you have to catch and find the length of the thirteen fishes which are present in a lake by measuring them. So after catching and measuring the length of the fishes they come out as follows that is 13, 12, 8, 5, 9, 20, 16, 14, 6, 14, 12, 9, 12. We generally prepare the box and whisker plot on the basis of the medians. So first we have to rearrange the found data in the increasing order that is from the minimum length to the maximum length given as follows that is 5, 6, 8, 9, 9, 12, 12, 12, 13, 14, 14, 16, 20. Now the next step is to calculate the median of all these found numbers. Now we see that there are odd that is thirteen numbers so the median of these numbers should be the middle one of all these numbers that is the 7th number of the order as there exists six numbers on both side of this 7th number. So our median comes out to be 12. Now in the further step we have to calculate the median which is lower. This median should be the centre of the first 6 numbers which comes out to be in the middle of eight and nine. Thus this median will come equal to 8.5. Then we have to calculate the median which is upper. This median should be the centre of the last 6 numbers which comes out to be in the middle of fourteen and fourteen. Thus this median will come equal to fourteen only. Finally we can make the box and whisker plot with the help of these three medians Advantages of Box whisker Plot 1. It helps us to learn how the data is spread in the series.

2. The graph is not sophisticated. It is clear and easy to understand. 3. It uses the range and the median values. 4. It is easy to compare the stratified data using the Box Whisker Plot. Disadvantages of the Box Whisker Plot 1. Original data is not clearly shown in the Box Plot 2. Mean and mode cannot be identified using the Box Plot. 3. It can be easy misinterpreted. 4. If large outliers are present, the Box Plot is more likely to give an incorrect representation.
