KARAN KHANNA For Karan, viewing life through the lens of camera started as a hobby, taken up in school and gradually spiraled into a passion, motivating him enough to take up professionally as a career. At St. Stephens College, Karan took an active part in photography, participating in several exhibitions in the 1970s. In the advertising phrase of his career as an account executive, Karan was exposed to many national and international corporate brands. His exposure into the advertising world of photography held him in good stead for several years & in 1982 he took to his passion - photography - full time. After that there was no looking back as assignments poured in from other ad agencies and direct clients. Slowly and steadily over the years, his reputation as commercial photographer grew in the field of industrial, fashion food and product photography. A all rounder Karan believed that you do not have to specialize in only one type of photography, and took up each assignment with equal gusto. But this commercial recognition was not enough and his soul still hankered to shoot pictures which were not bound by client briefs. So wherever Karan’s assignments took him, to satiate this desire he would literally take off on the streets of whichever city he was assigned to shoot in.. this street photography, straight from the heart is the culmination of 20 years of his lifes works so far. As his assignment took him to exotic destinations like Benares, Rajasthan and down south, Karan has built up a wonderful resovior of photographs. Keeping pace with the fast changing times, generes & trends in his field Karan has explored the fanstastic world of digital photography and has tweaked colours and the various fundamentals of photography and has come up with his own language. This exhibition is only the tip of the iceberg which tells its own story.

‘Time & time again’ archival print on archival fine photo paper 16”x 24” 2007

Born to an artist family, son of Krishen and Renu Khanna, Karan enjoyed growing up in an atmosphere where art was a way of life and so attenting art exhibitions musicial and dance performances was not out of the ordinary. One of the landmarks in his early life was his accompanying Henri Carter Bresson on a shooting spree in Chandini Chowk where he learnt the tricks of the trade and some of the finer points in photography. His works are in many private collections in India, UK, France, & USA.

Nandita Choudhary Nandita Chaudhuri, a London based artist, has been sculpting metal murals and painting oils and mixed media on canvas for over 20 years. Her repertoire also extends to charcoal sketches and installations. Her recent exhibitions have been have led to special commissioning from the Art Council of England. Her works are mostly abstract-figurative with a strong emotional element. A non-conformist, she believes in breaking free of pre-conceived definitions and stereotyped compartmentalisation. “Everyday I am filled with curiosity at newer facets of myself wanting to make a newer comment through brush, paint or other media. How can my today be anything like yesterday when I stare at different parts of my mind sitting in different areas of my palette wringing different thoughts and emotions that deserve to be expressed in different ways?” she says. Nandita has studied at the Central St. Martin’s School of Art, Courtauld Institute of Art and The Slade School of Art, London. With a Postgraduate Degree in Marketing Management from Westminster Business School, London. Nandita has had a successful career as a senior professional manager. She has worked in Senior Management roles in India, Europe and the specifically the UK in Advertising and a leading Global Bank. However, over the years her inner voice has plagued and beckoned her back fulltime to her studio Her works have been aired on a half hour slot on prime time television, in London and on BBC. Her recent solo in London was inaugurated by M.F. Hussain.A multifaceted personality, she has worn many hats as artist, art critique and theatre personality and published over a 100 articles in various newspapers and magazines in India and overseas. She has been the recipient of the Nehru award and has been living in London for the past 10 years with her family. Thoughts My current works explore and re-engage with various deep impressions and stored images snatched from life around me. Instances and nuances have been greedily devoured and etched into stored imprints and now they must find their way somehow into legible or illegible forms. They are gathered together as memories—fleeting, hiding and staring, as they rush to emote through brush and paint. ‘Bulls and Bears’ oil on canvas 36’’ x 48’’ 2008

A greedily devoured nuance can be ‘real’ while being derived from the ‘unreal’ if there was an acceptable reality in any terminology. My constant, heightened sensitivity has etched poetry in alternating forms, sometimes translating into imagery and sometimes into wordless verse. Very often I am unable to view an object or person in accepted forms but they might resemble a box with a label, a blurry haze or an animal or bird in the absolute surreal. What I gather is only an essence. I feed on this essence.

Many of my compositions begin with a strong aura combined with emotional or rational comment that can only be appeased after they appear composed in imagery like the cry of life from a disengaged womb, leaving me high, fulfilled and drained. I have battled in my earlier works to break free of lines and forms. The first line I drew on canvas stared at me like a shackle beginning to curl and swallow. I have fought that line and scaled limitations till interaction, conversation or creativity all blur into a language of liberated being and emoting.

We surround ourselves with handpicked entities and objects whether they are relationships, a circuitous routine or an exploration. We then begin to define that imagery through limitations bound by that permutation in choice. My works will strive to cross beyond in expression and content.

Suchi Chidambaram As a young child I was always interested in painting. I learnt to paint through observation and experiment. Initially self taught, it was only later that I was enthused into getting some formal training from K.C. Murukesan who is a senior artist, well known for his abstract landscapes. I have participated in various art workshops conducted by artists from South India. For the last few years I have been concentrating on oil painting, and inspiration has drawn me to views of cities, their people, the architecture and the interminable stories behind them. These are not painted in situ, rather they are painted from my distinctive memory of these places, often driven by my emotions. I try to capture the very mood of these inspiring cities and then narrate them on to the canvas with impressionistic strokes of thick oil paint with the use of a palette knife. They reveal the rhythm and movement of the people in these places. For the ‘India Now’ celebrations in London in July 2007, my 25m long paintings around a plinth that supported a model of the Taj floated down the Thames. The Paintings represented the similarities between Indian Cities and London and the strength of their relationship. I am currently working on a series called 'Great cities, Greater people'. In the last decade, cities like London, New York , Mumbai and Delhi have had the most extraordinary attacks to civilian life. My inspiration comes from the immense strength, courage and motivation of these people to carry on their lives despite death and destruction. These works will be exhibited in a solo exhihibition in 2008. Future Exhibitions · Participating in a Group show by Visual Arts London, in June 2008 · Participating in the Indian Summer show at Karen Taylor Contemporary Art in August 2008 · Solo exhibition at Nehru Centre, London in 2008. · Participating in the AAF with Karen Taylor Contemporary Art in October 2008
