Linda Reedy http://lindareedy.blogspot.com/ I am inspired by daily life and common objects and locations that evoke personal emotions. It is the beauty of these experiences, old found objects, and memorable places that fascinate me and motivate my work. Intuition is my guide, providing the direction I need for the first stages, changes, and completion of my work. Through this process, I reveal quiet paintings that reflect a sense of time, place, and above all, tranquility.

Visual Expressions Creative Art School and Gallery Visual Expressions Creative Art School, Gallery and Custom Framing is located in a small shopping center called The Ranch at Cedar Hill. Gallery owners Bill & Robin Ingle had a strong desire to help people experience and appreciate art of all types. Robin is a nationally recognized artist and they have traveled all over the Southern United States with her work. She has shown her work in to Las Vegas, Denver, Santa Fe, Kansas City, Jackson Hole and Nashville just to name a few places. In addition they’ve been fortunate enough to travel and enjoy art throughout the world. Art is important to them. Each time they returned they were always a little disappointed that there was not much of an art presence in Cedar Hill, Duncanville, Desoto or for that matter any part of Southwest Dallas county known as the Best Southwest. This was ultimately the motivation to open the Gallery in 2004. With over thirty years of experience they’ve learned a great deal about art and love to share that knowledge. From the beginning Visual Expressions has dealt with all aspects of art. They display, locate, frame, consult, repair and create all types of art. Whether a customer needs a painting, prints, bronze or advice about art, they do it all. Since opening they stopped doing most shows to focus on the Gallery. We represent quite a few different artists and offer both originals and reproductions of their work. There are many styles of art. They display glass, clay, mosaics, photography, sculptor as well as drawings and paintings. They work with a great many interior designers to come up with just the right pieces of art for a specific location. They’ve done installations of art in hotels, golf courses, chambers of commerce, city buildings as well as individual’s homes. We do conservation framing and offer over 2000 molding choices as well as have a nationally known artist to offer design elements. Also from the beginning people constantly asked about lessons. They were beginning to appreciate art and wanted to know how to create it. How was that made? Because of that curiosity Visual Expressions expanded. In 2008 they opened their creative art school in the facility they built to house both the Gallery and the school. It is directed by the Ingle’s daughter Jennifer and her Husband Javier Tamez. They offer classes to people of all experience levels from age 5 up. The classes are either one day workshops or six week courses in a variety of mediums. With a staff at times of up to 20 the school can teach a great many students. The teachers are excellent. Most of them have in excess of 20-25 years experience as professional artists. What they teach is from practical experience not just text books. Most people think they have no artistic talent but with the right instruction it’s amazing what they accomplish. The reaction we hear constantly from the students is “I can’t believe I did that” We’ve had several students that have progressed enough to get into highly juried art shows. That gives not only the students but their teachers a real sense of accomplishments.

In addition to the adult classes they have after school and weekend classes for the school age kids. During the summer from early June until mid August Visual Expression offers summer art camps for kids. The children get to explore different techniques in various mediums. The classes include everything from drawing, pastels, oil, watercolor, acrylic, encaustics, clay, mixed media, etc. It is fun and rewarding to watch the intensity these kids have when creating art. They absolutely love it. The Ingles created a 501-c3 to help at-risk kids with the cost of camps and classes. It is called Art and Beyond and is funded by matching Grants and donations from Individuals and sources like the Texas Commission for the arts and companies like Target. These art lessons for kids are extremely important. They’re not just about fun they promote critical thinking, problem solving and self confidence, as well as with math, reading and science development. We want to offer people of all ages an education and appreciation of art not leaving anyone behind that truly has a passion for the arts.

Miksang Contemplative Photography – Seeing the World with Fresh Eyes
Miksang is a Contemplative Arts practice using cameras. The Contemplative Arts are traditional Buddhist practices that include ikebana (art of flower arrangement), tea ceremony, calligraphy, kyudo (art of the bow), Haiku poetry, Zen gardens, and the modern practice of Miksang photography. The Contemplative Arts have little to do with the implements used in the practices, such as the flowers, pens, bows, or cameras. They have everything to do with one’s state of mind while engaged in the practices. The Contemplative Arts train students in being grounded in the world, minute by minute, to simply be present. Miksang is Tibetan for “Good Eye.” “Good” here does not mean bad or good in a judgmental way, but in the sense that all people have the innate ability to see their world clearly as it is in each moment. Miksang teaches students how to let go of their preconceptions and judgments about photography and to appreciate their world as they find it. Miksang contemplative photography is about the art of showing up and being fully present during the act of engaging with and photographing the world. It is a practice to feel at home in the world, to experience it directly, and to record the experience using cameras. The Miksang practice emphasizes the synchronization of the eye and the mind in the “now.” One way to understand Miksang as a contemplative practice is to learn what Miksang is NOT. Miksang is not about: preconceived ideas of photography, documentary photography, just taking pretty pictures, collecting pictures, our egos, gaining recognition for the photographs, or competition with other photographers. Miksang is not about what an individual photographer: likes or dislikes, finds beautiful or ugly, or finds worthy or unworthy of photographing. The goal of Miksang is not to get the “best” picture but simply to photograph what the student is seeing when they approach the world in an open, curious, and receptive way. During Miksang training, students learn to connect with their natural creativity and find photographic expression for what they find in the world. On a daily basis, we are all inundated with a barrage of information and experiences coming to us through our computers, cell phones, and TV’s. We live in a world of constant distraction of phone calls, emails, text messages, tweets, etc., etc. Our minds have been trained by our experiences to move rapidly from one demand to the next, to jump from the past to the future and back around again over and over throughout the day. Our minds are constantly labeling, categorizing, and judging our world and our interactions with it on both a conscious and unconscious level. It is the nature of being human in a modern world.

AOT Miksang contemplative photography is the practice of working with these habitual minds marinated in this world of distraction. It is about slowing down and connecting with the world and getting beyond the limitations the students define for themselves when they pick up a camera. It is about living in a world of direct perception, before our minds kick in with concepts. It is about true appearance rather than our mind’s story line about what we are seeing. It is about working from a place of mind without labels or categories. It is about relaxing, letting go, seeing clearly, and being a beginner in our experience of the world. It is about opening one’s eyes, one’s mind, and one’s heart to connect with the world as one finds it and to use the camera to capture that experience. “The Voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” ~Marcel Proust Miksang begins with an introduction to the basic forms of photography: color, pattern and texture, light, and space (positive and negative). Miksang then moves out into the students’ world with subjects like: “Ordinary Personal World,” “Sentient Beings” (animals and people), “Plants and Weeds,” as well as others. Students are taught to see and appreciate the beauty inherent in their world in a heartfelt and genuine way. The instructor provides group reviews of student’s photos to help guide them toward more effectively capturing the objects or scenes that caught their interest. Miksang has been taught in a variety of environments and formats: as immersive weekend workshops for groups of all ages, as college classes during a regular semester session, and as a series of weekly classes at a juvenile detention center, to name a few. Students of all levels of photographic experience, from novices with their first point and shoot cameras to professional photographers with their multiple lenses, can connect with the Miksang contemplative photography practice.

DONNA PAGE An “explosion of color and detail” are words used to describe a painting by Donna Page. A native of Dallas, TX. She graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. As a sculpture and painting major and as the daughter of an architect, dimension and depth have always been an important element in her pieces. Amazed by the incredible intricacies in architectural delineation, Page landed a job in the 80’s with an internationally known architectural illustration firm. The artist learned all she could about the theories of color, perspective, and shadow. After working as a freelance architectural illustrator for 20 years, Donna now enjoys applying the elements of “photo realism” to her own artistic interpretations. By taking a single flower portrayed in a “bee’s eye view” the audience sees an everyday object with an entirely new perspective. Donna works in pastel, gouache, watercolor, acrylic, and water soluble oils. The scale of her paintings range from very large to her small works series. She continues to attend various workshops to further her studies.
