Artists of Texas For as long as mankind has played a role in this world, artists have recorded that role. Every era in our history has been recorded, defined, refined, and enhanced by its artists‌and today is no exception. Every second holds a lifetime of inspiration, and in our fast-paced world this means that capturing the essence of the era requires a veritable army, millions strong and wielding their chosen implements of creation. Right now, there are untold numbers of artists channeling their situations, their conflicts, their passions, their grievances—their lives and the lives of those around them into their work. Transforming their energy into what matters. Using their art to tell a story. The Artists of Texas was born in the Spring of 2009, by three Daily Painters, Vernita Bridges Hoyt, Debbie Grayson Lincoln and Laurie Justus Pace. With a desire to bond together a strong group of artists from advertising, marketing and creative they were committed to set out on the journey to find professional artists across the state of Texas This year celebrates 5 years of friendships based on respect, admiration and love. The AOT group is honored by The Dutch Art Gallery, Dallas, Texas, representing them annually in a winter show. Hans and Pam Massar are the family owners of The Dutch Art Gallery and have enjoyed bringing a bit of Texas into their gallery life and to the community.

With a BA degree in art from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and after working with an interior design firm and also a tour and destination management company, I have returned to my love of oil painting. There are so many subjects that interest me in painting, from a still life to figurative work, and painting en plein air. Continuing to learn and take workshops with artists I admire is an ongoing goal, having recently studied with Calvin Liang, Carolyn Anderson and Qiang Huang.

Beth Van Deventer

Bethv.com

My artwork comes out of my dogged (no pun intended) if not stubborn commitment to work hard and practice the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Of all of the potential subjects that can be painted, I find the human form, and particularly the face most interesting and worthy of exploration. I am amazed at how a tiny variation in shape, line, color or texture can completely alter the identity of a person. This intense focus on details that fit into the big picture is immensely fascinating and perplexing to me. Portraits give me the opportunity to have face-to-face interactions with others that I find very personally satisfying. My goal is to create not only a likeness of the individual but to try to capture that specific expression that helps to define some facet of the individual personality of the subject.

My portraits may be of people, or animals. At this point in time my process is the same regardless of the specific subject. Through my artwork I hope to convey to others the unique qualities of the subject: energy, calmness, contemplation, beauty or power. I use a digital camera and take many, many photos of the subject in order to offer me the flexibility of finding the ideal expression that best reflects the character of the person I am painting. Although I do paint from life, most subjects, especially children and animals are not able to hold a pose for more than a moment, and my visual memory is limited. I like painting in both pastels and oils as with each I can achieve a loose, painterly quality. At the moment I find the pastel works often are a great vehicle to capture quickly the likeness of a person. I find I am able to create a good likeness of the subject without too much effort with pastels.

Betty James

BettyJames.fineartstudioonline.com A native Texas artist, I currently live in Spring, Texas north of Houston. Art has been a lifelong passion for me, starting in early childhood. I have explored many mediums along the way, including acrylics, watercolor, sculpture, pastel, china painting and my first love oil. I have been fortunate to take numerous classes and workshops from talented professional artist including Bob Wygant, Tom Browning, Ron Riddick, Scott Burdick and Carolyn Anderson among others. For over a decade the majority of my time was occupied with private commissioned murals in acrylic, done mostly from old master’s work requested by the client. Currently I am back painting originals mainly from oils and pastels. I am thankful to have an art filled life working at something I love. Art gives meaning to my life and a deeper appreciation of the beauty surrounding me daily. It is a never ending process to learn and improve my skills and a way to express myself.

I am proud to be a member of the Artist of Texas, to have their support and the links available to follow the work of other Texas artists.

David Forks

DavidForks.com The 6th of 7 children Mr. Forks, was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1957 to a military family. He began a successful career in commercial art shortly after graduating high school. He initially worked and learned production art at River City Studio, owned and operated by San Antonio art legends George Hughey and now notable painter and signature member of PAPA, George Strickland. After River City Studio, he worked as co producer of Southwest Airlines magazine and as illustrator for Concept Enterprises, (the original Koozie company) before venturing off to open his own illustration and design firm. After 20 years self employed, and the revolution of the digital age, Mr. Forks went to work in the printing industry where he continues today. None of these positions however, fulfilled his real desire to paint. He shelved those aspirations for 30 years while he raised a family of 4 boys finding little to no time to paint along the way.

The untimely passing of an older brother to cancer in late 2006 opened his eyes to the fleeting of time and realization that it was time to make his dream a reality. He now paints on a daily basis in oil and acrylics. His style is ever evolving and varies from very loose and fast to tightly worked pieces. Mainly a landscape painter, he finds inspiration in Gods creations everywhere. Mr. Forks currently resides in Spring, Texas north of Houston.

Debbie Lincoln

nowornever-debbie.blogspot.com A 30 year resident of Erath County, Texas, Debbie Grayson Lincoln does not have to go far to find inspiration for her paintings. Most are found in her own backyard in Morgan Mill, Texas. RV trips to a Wyoming rendezvous, Yellowstone National Park and Cuchara, Colorado provide further inspiration. But her favorite subjects are the real cowboys and cowgirls who work with livestock on a daily basis in Erath and surrounding counties. A member of the Colorado based “Daily Painters” group since 2007 and a founding member of the Artists of Texas in 2009, Debbie devotes as much time promoting the art of other talented people as she does her own. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, cooking, caring for assorted farm animals (including chickens), playing with her grandbaby, quilting and riding one of the 3 horses that still reside at her farm.

Debbie says: “Many of my neighbors are real cowboys and horsemen/women. The photo opportunities are endless and the inspirations are bounded only by one’s imagination. I feel blessed to be able to indulge two of my passions in such a fashion - painting the country and people around me and riding the horses that are bred here. I am still ‘evolving’ a style. When I was in desktop publishing and designing logos, I drew like an engineer - precise and exact - photographic-like reproductions were my mainstay. Now, as a cherished friend says, I want to ‘hang loose’. My style is not yet established (and may never be!). I am having too much fun trying new things...but I predict if you follow me for a while, you’ll enjoy the variety and the evolution!”

Debra Latham

DebraLatham.com

Debra is a native Texan and much of her inspiration comes from her family farmhouse in the Texas Hill Country. She’s always been somewhat of an artist and designer growing up. Painting was only a hobby until it became an obsession for her. She became more aware of her talent as oil painter in her 30’s. She is a mother of two college age boys. “I didn’t paint a lot when the boys were younger because there was just too much going on with school and sports. Now that they are older and I have more free time I have really gone on a painting frenzy. And plus painting just helps me unwind.” Debra says. Debra is a self-taught artist. She studies the work of the old masters and some of the more popular artist of today. Some of her favorite artists are: Sargent, Zorn, Pino, Leffel, McGraw, Gerhartz. “For the most part, I am self taught. However, I am continuously learning from the many artists I study with on a regular basis. My art education will never end as each new painting & experience brings new insight.”

My photography is in the Miksang Contemplative Photography style. Miksang photography is a Shambhala Buddhist Contemplative practice that focuses on direct perception of the world, without conceptualizations; it is photography that connects the photographer with nonconceptual awareness. Often with this type of photography, the photographer will be stopped in their tracks by perceptions that completely interrupt the flow of mental activity, that freeze them in the moment. The craft is to capture that moment with the camera so that people viewing the photographs can then have the same experience.

Elizabeth Schowachert

facebook.com/ESSTUDIOS1

Having been born and raised in Northern California, I have always had a deep appreciation and affinity with the sea and the natural beauty of the Northern California coastline. My paintings reflect my bond with nature and deep love of the ocean. My aim when creating a piece of art is to achieve balance and harmony between color, composition and form. Artistic expression and the process of creating art is a key part of who I am, and I believe my work reflects this. I have explored many different mediums over the years, including mosaic, acrylic and oil paint. Currently I am working primarily with the encaustic medium.

For me, discovery and creative exploration are an essential part of making art. My work is as much about the process of discovery as it is about the articulation of an idea, a feeling or a place. Creating art is an essential part of who I am and my hope is that my work reflects the deep passion and joy I feel when I am painting. In this series “Originsmy intent was to explore the beginnings of life, in its most organic form. A watery, sweet, lush landscape, full of vibrant color, and organic shapes. This is the world which I am attempted to express and create in this series. Finding inspiration and maintaining the passion to create does not come easily and I want to acknowledge the influence and support of Bonny Leibowitz, (owner of The Encaustic Center Richardson Texas) who has guided and encouraged me along the way. The Texas artist community and Bonny in particular have been instrumental in nurturing my desire to fully realize my potential as an artist. Texas has a rich and vibrant art community of which I am privileged to be a part of.

Fran Chausse White

FranChausseWhite.com

During the last 30 years, Fran has mastered painting techniques as well as presenting her art to others. As a self-taught artist, she has consulted with masters, studied art instruction books, and communicated creative techniques to students. Once “art” was discovered, this creative journey has been never ending. The passion to be an artist and to share this gift of creativity has been a driving force in her life. There has been growth and enjoyment in using various art mediums but her specialized interest and greatest accomplishments have been with oil paints; thus, she is an oil painter. “Sharing the Gift” of painting has been a special focus. She has mentored all age groups at art studios, craft stores and painting conventions in various parts of the country. She knows there is something very special in helping someone gains a creative confidence. Anyone’s first painting is a masterpiece! And it works both ways, several of her art pieces have been inspired from interactions in the classroom. Her favorite subjects to capture on canvas are God’s many wonderful landscapes and gardens where people go for solitude, calmness, quiet, harmony, and a renewal of self.

George De Chiara

GeorgeDeChiara.com

George De Chiara’s paintings are best described as representational with a push towards impressionist color. One can see his dedication to composition and color in this body of work, which is collected across the United States and abroad.

George attended The America Academy of Art in Chicago, and graduated with a degree in fine arts. While at the academy, George Studied under Irving Shapiro, Ted Smuskiewicz and the legendary Bill L. Parks. Immersed in color, form and design, George developed many of the techniques he still uses today. The Academy stressed the importance of studying from life and working daily. George continues to embrace these ethics as he refines and sharpens his vision. After spending time living in Chicago, Colorado and Utah, George finally settled in North Texas with his wife and two daughters. HRuedArt.webs.com Colombian born artist, Hilda Rueda, trained as a Petroleum Engineer. She studied art with several artist, both in Canada and Brazil. She has exhibited in Canada, Brazil, and California and currently in Houston, where she has her studio. She has received several awards both locally and abroad. She also writes poetry and is an active member of several art organizations. Painting, for me, is not just a language, but the only one available to express complex ideas and thoughts that will be impossible to express in words. My passion has been always the human figure, involved in daily, simple activities. I intend to portrait the sitter’s soul and his/her solitude, not as a vice but as the true nature of life. In their loneliness, the characters talk about a moment in time apparently inconsequential which I intend to extend outside a time frame to express who they are, were and will be, so the viewer can reflect on his/her own transcendence. The strong colors and heavy texture intend to show the strong passions that the characters experience, the energy of happiness and sadness, the suffering and ecstasies and all the mixtures that constitute the wonderful fabric of life

JanisKrendick.com According to Janis, nature absorbs and inspires her. She focuses on the landscape and seeks to capture on paper or canvas the essence of the experience. She has a minor in studio art from Ohio University and has studied both pastel and oil with a number of nationally known artists. Her pastels and oils have been in many exhibits and have won several awards, including Honorable Mention in the Pastel Journal. “Krendick’s strong connection to the land as a sacred place is evident. Although formally trained with an art degree from Abilene Christian University plus a scholarship year at the Brooklyn Museum Art School in New York City, it is in my personal studies where I make my greatest strides. I attend art workshops, read art books and magazines, and watch art DVDs; but it is the “Brush Time, the actual painting time that produces the leaps of understanding. My husband is a commercial fisherman in Alaska where we spend our summers. We spend our winters in Granbury, Texas. I love to paint outdoors especially in the spring and fall in the areas around Granbury and Glen Rose Texas. As a member of Artist of Texas, Lake Granbury Art Association, and Outdoor Painters Society, I have taken advantage of the many opportunities to enter art shows, take workshop, go on paint outs, and especially enjoy the inspiring interchange of ideas of fellow artist.

Jimmy Longacre was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1947. At an early age his family moved to San Antonio, Texas. Through grade school he filled his notebooks with drawings of Davy Crockett, Superman, cowboys, Indians, horses, Disney characters, airplanes and spaceships, to share with his friends. Longacre graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree, and then earned a Master of Fine Art degree from Syracuse University. Contrary to the predominant scholastic influence of the day, Abstract Expressionism, Longacre fed his artistic interests on paintings from the Golden Age of American Illustration and the American Impressionists. In following his early passion for these he enjoyed a career as a freelance illustrator and painter for twenty-five years. During part of that time Longacre taught drawing and painting while on the faculty of The University of Texas College of Fine Art. Today, Jimmy is a full time painter and lives with his wife on a hilltop in the Texas hill country, near Dripping Springs. He spends much of his time on frequent outdoor painting excursions gathering the experience and material for his studio compositions. He describes his evolving painting style as Subjective Realism.

I am a member of Artists of Texas and the Pastel Society of the Southwest and have been published in the Kennedy Promotions edition of the Best of Artists & Artisans. My work has been juried into many prestigious shows and exhibitions including those of the Dutch Art Gallery, Pastel Society of the Southwest, RCAS Regional Art Exhibition, Texas and Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition and the Texas State Fair. I have won several First Place Ribbons, several Second Place Ribbons, several Third Place Ribbons. I have studied with Ken Gore, Bob Tommey, Greg Biolchini, Carrie Ballantyne, William A. Schneider, Kathy Tate, and June Holloway. I am a homegrown Texan who grew up in the Dallas area with roots in West Texas. Anything Texan and western are among my favorite subjects. I love doing portraits either from live models or photographs. Oils and pastels are my mediums. In oils, I love painting with a palet knife--it lends itself to a loose style and gives me a sense of freedom. I am a colorist--I love strong colors.

“I began painting over 20 years ago and my paintings have developed over time while trying to capture on canvas the beauty that can be found in everyday life. I want to convey the feel of a time, place or setting rather than create a photo representation. In a time when our lives are full of busyness, fine art holds a place all its own. Like music and other creative endeavors, painting calms the soul and in the words of Robert Henri, points us to what might be. My goal ultimately is to add something of value to the world that we live in.

Judy Mackey

JudyMackey.com I have always been interested in art and took painting lessons as a child growing up in Japan but I entered the world of Fine Art as a Professional Artist in 2005. I paint mostly with a palette knife, with a heavy build-up of paint which gives my paintings a lot of texture. I like working with a limited palette of colors using either Ultramarine blue or Prussian blue for my blues, Cadmium yellow light, Cadmium red medium or Alizarin Crimson for my reds, and Titanium white, and occasionally adding Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre and or Magenta. I love being able to mix and derive new colors with the limited palette of colors. I strive to create beautiful colors and capture the light and shadows along with the textures in every painting. My painting style is impressionistic with simplicity with a touch of abstract. My artwork is in private collections in Europe, Japan, Canada and the United States.

JuneHolloway.com I was born in England where I received a university of london degree in Art. I have been painting and drawing all my life and at the age of twelve I received a beautiful box of oil paints. When I became the mother of twin boys my oil painting was curtailed, little boys and oil paints do not mix. My local art supply clerk suggested that I switch to pastels it was love at first sight. At the age of thirty five I moved with my three sons to America I carried one suitcase containing my cloths, and a backpack containing all my art supplies. We settled in Wichita Kansas and I found a wonderful art community there, I joined many of the art groups and I continued my art career.

I love to paint and I love to pass on the knowledge that I have garnered through the years. I now have about thirty students who share my passion for painting. My hopes for the future is that I can continue to paint and draw and that my paintings will be enjoyed by my clients and my viewers for many years to come.

Kay Wyne

KWyne.com Kay M. Wyne is a mid-career artist who is passionate about painting. Kay has lived in the community of Lake Highlands in Dallas, Texas for over thirty-five years. Her interest in art has led her to develop her own distinctive style of imagery found in her art. The subject matter for Kay’s paintings varies, as she finds inspiration from the landscape, architectural elements, cows, roosters, horses and birds nests. She also finds the most ordinary objects of daily life interesting subjects to paint. Vibrant colors and loose brushstroke movements are characteristics found in her paintings. The use of the palette knife and multiple layers of paint create depth and texture on the canvas, creating a painterly, impressionistic feel.

As a full time artist, Kay paints in the working studio of ArtWorks, She shares the studio with eight other artists, and also paints in plein air on a weekly basis. The paintings on canvas may be appealing to the eye, not necessarily recreating realistic images, but images reflecting Kay’s own creative, unpredictable perspective. Oil paintings on canvas or board are her painterly visions, capturing a moment in time or a mood for the viewer to admire. The subject matter for Kay’s contemporary art varies, and includes seven bodies of work that she is working on concurrently: “Abstract Aspens”, “Contemporary Cows”, “Dragonfly Dreams”, “Horizon Series”, Nest Series”, “Rooster Series” and “Spirit of the Horse”. Kay holds a Bachelors Degree in Art Education from Western Illinois University, and has owned and operated a custom framing business for two decades. She recently sold that business, allowing her to devote more time to her art. Kay resides in Dallas with her husband, John. Together, they have two grown children and one son-in-law, all currently living in Dallas.

Kristine Byars

Wildwood-studio.com Art is a passion I’ve inherited from my grandmother. Born and raised in the Midwest, my parents created a strong foundation, instilling in me a great love of nature, the outdoors, and all creatures. I love, and take pride in what I do. Employed as a graphic artist most of my adult life with respected agencies, I’ve returned to my first love of painting. Working primarily in oil on canvas, I use bold color and interesting situations to create paintings that spark warm emotion. My work captures life, and is often coupled with humor. I personally photograph my own subject matter. My inspiration is gained through extensive travel, whether it be internationally, to the U.S. National Parks, or to cherished small town America. My husband and I live in Texas with our horse, Golden Retriever, and “full figured” cat. All live harmoniously and I usually paint with an audience of several critters offering advice. If not painting or traveling, most days I can be found at the barn, or volunteering at the U.S.’s largest animal sanctuary, Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch.

My parents always supported me in my artistic pursuits and were my biggest fans. I feel so blessed to be able to do what I do and find it very satisfying when my particular way of looking at the world connects with someone else.” Krystal resides in Spring Texas with her husband and three children. She has been juried into numerous competitions winning ribbons and cash awards. She has artwork hanging in over twelve states. Krystal is member of her local art league, Oil Painters of America, Portrait Society of America and American Women Artists. Kyle Wood

KWoodFineArt.com Kyle Wood was born in Dallas, Texas, on February 19, 1972. His interest in drawing & painting came at an early age. Initially, he doodled with paint-by-number series, but his Great Aunt, Mildred Stapleton, saw that he had great potential and encouraged him to take art instruction from a professional artist. Kyle’s first instruction came from Calonnie Gragg, who taught children’s and adult art classes at Nichol’s Art & Frame in Mesquite, Texas, and later at Barton on Boystun Gallery in Rockwall, Texas. In the beginning, he took children’s classes learning a variety of mediums, but decided that his passion was oil painting, so he enrolled in the adult oil painting classes. Under Calonnie’s guidance, Kyle learned the basics of color mixing, value, and composition. In addition, he has taken several art & architectural classes at Eastfield College and The University of Texas at Arlington, where he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art (December 1999). Kyle has studied with June Lee and Dalhart Windberg, learning unique brush and palette knife techniques.

I came by my passion for creating art from my mother Winifred Bozeman. She was an instructor, and an artist of life! I have worked in many different media, but primarily pastels and oils. I love painting the Grand Canyon, wildlife and of course western scenes. The Artists of Texas show includes a large oil of a crossbred Brahma heifer, thus the title of “Little Bit O Ear”, and a pastel of whitefaced cattle depicted resting in the shade of Mesquite trees. The other painting, “Into The Glory” is a large oil of a Grand Canyon scene, and it was accepted into the Bosque Classic. N. A. Bozeman strives to depict a moment in time with each of her paintings; “She loves the play of light and color to show movement, and hopes that you enjoy viewing her artwork as much as she enjoys creating it!”

“It is my hope that my art will inspire you, bless you, encourage you, or just simply make you feel good. Most of the images I have captured, with paint or silk dye, have begged me to paint them because of the colors, the memories, the light, the reflections, or the spiritual significance. When the Lord revealed to me that He had made me creative and that He wanted me to create with Him, I could not resist His invitation. These are the creative expressions of my worship of the Lord. I want to “SHOW forth the praises of Him who called me out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9) “

Nathalie Kelley is a full time, award winning artist. She was born into an artistic family in Texas to parents who are professional artists as well as inspiration from her artistic grandparents. Nathalie’s earliest memories are about art. She remembers an early childhood memory at age five of creating paintings and taking them around the neighborhood to sell. Niki Gulley

NikiGulley.com

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Seeing a spark of enthusiasm, her parents signed her up for private art lessons and she has been hooked ever since. Following her childhood in Glenview, Illinois, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at Southern Methodist University. Since she disliked the long, chilly Chicago winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after completing her degree. Upon graduating Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a Dallas magazine. After a few years passed by, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again during nights, weekends and any time she could find a free moment. This is what she had been missing; this satisfied the void and she began to feel fulfilled again. Ten years later she segued from advertising to live her life’s dream of being a full-time artist.

I’ve been self-employed for 30 years. I started my own business contracting the painting of billboards. After gathering some years of experience, I signed a contract with a local company and painted their pictorial work in a studio environment for eight years. With the advent of large printers, I chose to transfer my skills to painting murals. My clients have included PepsiCo, GE, Southwest Airlines, Landry’s (Saltgrass, Rainforest), Simon Properties and many schools and restaurants. I feel fortunate that I’ve been able to support myself with a paintbrush for over 30 years. For the most part, I am self taught. However, I’m grateful to all of the artists whose work I’ve studied because they have continued my education. In particular, Connie Erickson has provided her honest critique and her encouragement in my pursuit of fine art. Beauty inspires me; training the eye to see color, values and design while pursuing the beauty that light reveals is a lifelong adventure. Andrew Wages, John Pototschnik and Kaye Franklin have shaped my understanding of color and affected my palette. I reside in rural Collin County near Weston with my wife, Laurinda. My hobbies include cooking and beekeeping. Galleries representing my work are Mr. J’s in Richardson, Orison’s on McKinney’s square and The Dutch Art Gallery. Always True

Rebecca Zook

RebeccaZook.blogspot.com “What was it that Dorothy learned? ‘If ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own back yard.’ Many artists travel far and wide to find inspiration for their work, but I often find the most compelling scenes are truly in my own back yard; a wildflower-filled lot up the street, vultures roosting just off the back deck of the house, or a young boy dressed in costume for a festival.” Rather than focusing on a specific subject matter, Rebecca Zook relies on a high level of detail and a strong sense of light to tie her work together. Viewers often comment that they feel as if they could step into her paintings; as if the frame was a window to another world. She has several successful solo shows under her belt as well as many local and national level awards. In 2011, she was granted Signature Status in the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society. “I never made a choice to be an artist. I just always was.” Taking drawing and sculpture classes all through school, Rebecca was fortunate to attend a high school that offered Commercial Art as an elective. This altered her path from fine art to Graphic Design. She received a full academic scholarship to Southern Methodist University in Dallas where she majored in Advertising Art gaining her BFA degree and minored in fine art.

Rebecca has been working as a Graphic Designer for the last 20 years. She turned her attention back to fine art in 2003 focusing on acrylics to express herself in her paintings though still works a full-time day job. In a recent article in “Granbury Showcase Magazine” Rebecca was asked what she was most proud of about herself. The answer was simple, “It’s that I am a survivor.” She continues, “I have survived...found my inner strength, and still find joy, beauty and love all around me. I came to understand that I can make a difference. We all have that ability. We just have to find our passion.” In 2008, she was diagnosed with a rare genetic immune disease called Hypogammaglobulemia that nearly took her life and requires ongoing treatment with donated human plasma-based medication. In 2011, she faced the death of her husband of 10 years in a traffic accident, and more recently, she has been confronted with a new battle, breast cancer. Displaying a little of her ‘slightly twisted humor,’ which she credits for retaining her sanity, Rebecca remarried on December 21st, 2012–the day the world didn’t end–to a man who shares her love of animals, of art, of science and understands the emotional and physical pain she has suffered. Together they heal each other.

SheriArt.net I have studied and painted for 30 years, constantly learning from many diverse artists through workshops and classes. I consider myself an impressionist painter and strive to create an accurate but painterly look. I want you to see my brush stroke or wave of my palette knife. My goal is to push boundaries, growing through experimentation, variety and brush mileage. I have grown to love the process of painting from life, whether it be outdoors or from a set up in the studio. Creating still life’s in the studio gives me control over color shape, form and design. My result is an explosion of color and energy. It’s an exhilarating and challenging adventure. I am inspired with the process and my gratitude to God for the artistic ability He has given me. I currently have paintings in Dutch Art Gallery, Dallas, Texas; VITAS Inpatient unit at Baylor All Saints Hospital; VITAS Hospice, Dallas office and VITAS Hospice, Ft. Worth office. Original artwork brings beauty and warmth to our unit and provides a nice respite to the staff and patients.

Shirley Quaid

ShirleyQuaid.com Heart tugging scenes, character lines, life lived long, if not well, these are things that pull me in and keep me painting. I am an artist who has the rare privilege of living my dream to paint. What a life! Finally. Biography Shirley’s art career started after she had raised her family but she is making up for lost time by painting every day. A viewer once said of her work that the soul was evident in the figurative as well as the landscape paintings. What a wonderful thing to hear! She connects with her subjects on an emotional level as her heart strings are tugged by the beauty of the human spirit as well as our beautiful Earth. Every new painting offers challenges to work through as edges are softened, colors are selected and the thickness of the paint is applied with brush and knife to create an evocative response from the viewer. Her paintings have garnered numerous awards from the very beginning and have been collected throughout the United States. Now a Texas artist, she moved to the Houston area from Wewoka Oklahoma. She maintains a studio in Humble, TX and is represented by The Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, TX. Her work is hangs in Chez Nous, and Red Palette Art Gallery in Humble, TX.

SuzyPal.com I feel very blessed by God that He has allowed me to be able to paint and draw. I Love to do mosaics and quilt too. A scripture from the Bible that I really like is: For I am the Lord, your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear, I will help you. Isaiah 41:13 and I truly believe He has helped me with my art! I have met so many wonderful artists, and taken workshops from other artists who have all been willing to share their knowledge and tips to help the rest of us to continue to grow. I hope to be able to share anything I have learned too! My theory is “It is just paper and paint, NOT a matter of Life or Death, so just have fun with it!

Tina Bohlman

TinaBohlman.com “While it’s important to look ahead and plan for the future, an artist must also remain “in the moment…the now. My “moment” is when I’m working on location. I’ve been an outdoor painter for most of my art career. Nothing compares for inspiration and capturing light and emotion. Plein Air is demanding, physically and mentally. As the light moves, minute by minute across the sky, every stroke must be without hesitation. It’s a marathon race with the sun; spirited, emotional….and exhausting. I love it!” In a career span of 40 years, this native Texan has earned more than 60 awards to include 4 Best-in-Show and 14 First Place Watercolor. In addition to juror recognitions, she received more than 25 patron’s Purchase Awards and numerous Peoples’ Choice Awards.

She earned bachelors and masters degrees in art from Sam Houston State University and presently paints in her studio and en plein air. Ann Hoffpauier

ArtbyAnn.com

Ann Hoffpauir is a full-time artist from Orange, Texas where she lives and resides. Ms. Hoffpauir paints in a realistic style. Her love of life and art is reflected in her superb paintings done in different mediums, of a wide range of subjects. She knows when she has hit the mark when there’s a balance between moods, look and feel. An artist knows when he or she has succeeded when a viewer can feel the petal of a flower or the soft nose of a horse or the mist of a fog covered pasture or swamp. Major themes in her work in addition to her depiction of the landscape include animals, with an interaction with nature. Her painting style blends with a love of nature and its forms, floral displays, animals and people, with brilliant lights and strong darks. What catches her eye is the effect light has on form in unique situations whether it’s striking an object, fleeting or spilling over an object. Ann finds the spontaneous quality of watercolors lends itself very well to a fresh painterly approach, appearing effortless. Likewise, her oils and pastels contain those qualities along with her confident and enthusiastic brushwork. It’s not just the brushwork or color, but the painting as a whole, must engage the viewer. The painting should convey a sense of mystery and beauty.

Becky Parks

BeckyParksArtist.com Becky has always been interested in oil painting, art and architecture, but ‘life’ put her ambitions on hold until recently retiring. Now numerous travels to Europe have enabled her to acquire the true feeling of Provence and Tuscany. Enjoying the same light in the south of France that drew the masters such as Monet, Cezanne, and Renoire, she captures the brightly painted shutters, the lavender fields and the sunflowers of that special area. The medieval villages of St Paul de Vence, Gourdon and Eze to mention a few, offer many architectural opportunities for stunning painting. Had she been born in another time she would have designed the medieval villages of France, but now recreating their distinct beauty on canvas is her way of preserving the past as well as her holiday memories. Being fluent in the French language has been a huge benefit while traveling throughout France and Europe.

DonnaBlanchard.com I view my paintings as remembrances of passing moments, not photographic memories As remembrances, they renew the awe of a lasting impression. For me, immersion in art has been lifelong. My artistic potential was cultivated early with private tutoring as a child and progressed through university study. However, with a doctoral degree and subsequent careers in higher education, art became a personal endeavor. In 2002, I became an active career artist marketing my work primarily on the East Coast. In particular, both the Limner Gallery and Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in NYC have given me invaluable exposure through juried competitions and gallery invitations. Now, with Flower Mound as my home, I am very pleased to be a part of the vibrant art world of Texas.

Liz Hill

LizHillArt.com

Liz started her serious art training at the Los Angeles Art Center School at age 17. She studied advertising design and illustration. She enjoyed the experience, but always wished to do more unstructured creative pieces. During the 70’s she was a busy mother and wife, with an interior decorating business. She did attend the University of Houston and studied under John Alexander and Gael Stack, something she treasures to this day, as they inspired her to find her own voice. She continued her art education always and studied under many fine teachers. In the 80’s she started showing and selling her work primarily in the Rockport, Texas area. She did many water paintings and anything relating to the ocean. Her work at this time in her career was exclusively oil. She moved to the Woodlands in 2001 and loves the artist opportunities she finds there. She is a member of theWoodlands art league, as well as a member of the leagues in Tomball and Conroe. She won many ribbons for her oils, but 4 years ago she was introduced to water media and never looked back. She joined the Watercolor Society of Houston and gained recognition for her work, after a while people were asking her to teach her methods. She has expanded her media into collage, and her workshops are known for their experimental nature and light hearted approach to art. The main focus of her work now is figurative work. “I work in water media as it enables me to draw and paint quickly. My work is contemporary in feeling, and the addition of collage materials reflect our world today. I am not interested in copying the past.” - Liz

Martie Rains

MartieRains.com Martie Rains began painting in 2005 after retiring as a marketing manager and teacher. She wanted to try something new, so at the suggestion of a friend, she chose to enroll in oil painting classes. As most beginners, Martie began painting simple subjects such as apples and grapes which she found somewhat boring. She considered discontinuing the lessons, but a trip to Italy changed her mind. A few weeks into her classes, Martie and her husband, Gary, took a trip to Italy. Even though she knew little about painting techniques such as design, value, and color, the beautiful landscapes and ancient architecture inspired her. She couldn’t wait to get home to try to recreate what she had seen. In spite of her inexperience, Martie’s first few paintings were a success, winning Honorable Mention in local art shows. Encouraged by this, she decided to continue her art classes, finding she enjoyed painting the picturesque Italian countryside. Martie’s art has won awards and has been juried into shows and artists’ groups. In her hometown of Granbury,TX, she was the featured artist for the Christian Women’s Job Corp and recently hosted a solo show at Shanley House Gallery.

Since then, Martie and Gary have traveled extensively in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and the Middle East, giving her an unlimited source of subjects from which to paint. She loves to try to capture not only the beauty of the places she visits, but also the feeling she has when she sees them. Martie also enjoys painting landscapes and scenes near her home in Granbury, TX. Additionally, in the past few years, she has added still-life and figurative pieces to her repertoire. The artist’s medium of choice is oil though she has experimented with watercolor and pastels. Studying under several accomplished artists such as John Pototschnik, Kaye Franklin, Chris Saper, Betty Carr, and others, she prefers to master oil painting before moving on to other mediums.

Susan Moss Cooper

SusanMoss.com

Susan Moss began painting in oils at a young age under the instruction of her grandmother, Leola Moss, a nationally recognized award-winning painter. A great source of inspiration since childhood, Leola also instilled in Susan her love of the Texas landscape. Susan’s grandmother, Leola began painting in 1938. She studied under early Texas artist Vivian Aunspaugh for 10 years. She also studied with Jessie Davis, Ramon Froman and gave art demonstrations to the Frank Reaugh Art Club. Frank Reaugh and Vivian Aunspaugh are the pioneers in bringing professional art to Dallas during the early 1900’s and Leola played a key role in the Dallas art scene during her career, exhibiting at Joseph Sartor Galleries on several occasions, as well as her own gallery, 3020 McKinney. Susan’s style is heavily influenced by these early Texas artists, especially her grandmother. Like her predecessors, she prefers to experience the landscape first-hand and often paints en plein air (on location). Her focus has been on the Texas Hill Country, as well as landscapes from her travels throughout Europe and the Southwest. “Painting on-site brings so many other elements to a piece. The work is the result of my reaction to what I’m experiencing in the moment – the temperature, the wind, the light, indescribable qualities that come out in the painting. I’m more concerned with capturing the spirit of a place and my response to it rather than the exact color or duplication of what I see.” Her recent interest in figurative work has led her to study with Kim English and Lesley Rich. Other noted artists she has studied with include Jeanette LeGrue, Gordon Fowler and Suzanne Kelly Clark. Susan is an award-winning painter and is represented in many private collections across the country. She is a member of Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, Outdoor Painters Society and The National League of American Pen Women. She lives in Dallas with her husband Rob, four year old son Tres, one cat and a border collie named Sudie. ArtistsofTexas.org - AOT | 135

She has been involved in one-woman, group, society invitational exhibits and international exhibitions and her work can be found in both public and private collections throughout the nation. Linda Popple

LindaPopple.com

In 2008 began painting landscapes, still lifes and figures using the oil paints she loves. Linda chooses a subject by whatever speaks to her at the time and paints from life or photograph. She enjoys taking ordinary subjects and painting them in an extraordinary way with color and good composition. Linda began her art career after raising her three sons and retiring from her work in business world. She earned a BA from Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee and a Culinary Arts Degree from Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan. She is a self-taught artist with no formal art education, but has studied through workshops, DVDs, and art books. Linda spends time in museums and is inspired by the paintings and the works of fellow artists. In 2010 she began a blog as a way to document her creative journey, improve her work as a daily painter, receive input from other artists and share her art with others. As her journey continues Linda’s goal is to grow and learn more about art and the spirit of creativity.
