Some of the most innovative company’s who are passionate about the products they create are the most are successful. O’Neill comes from humble and modest beginnings. Emerging from a small garage off the great highway in San Francisco, California in the home of founder Jack O’Neill in 1952. The company began with Jack O’Neill creating balsa surfboards and a handful of accessories, along with his innovative concept, the wetsuit. O’Neill created these aquatic thermal garments to insulate surfers and allow them to maintain body warmth in the cold California coast surf. The first of these suits were hand fabricated by gluing pieces of neoprene together. Despite the skepticism of friends at the idea of being accepted by the surfing community, the idea was warmly received for their ability to extend the length of surfing sessions. Being the only local surf shop in central and northern California, his first small surf shop became a well-known local hangout for surfers, which also helped popularize the sport. While O’Neill was quickly increasing his experience and skill in fabricating wetsuits, he lacked experience in the art of surfboard shaping. This led to him recruiting experienced board shaper Phil Edwards. What started out as single type of wetsuit quickly evolved into a few different types, each designed for different thermal needs. These different types of wetsuits were called the shorty, the long john, and the long sleeved beaver tall. What was once a seasonal sport during the summer and spring soon became a year round sport to thanks to O’Neill.

Background

Soon O’Neill’s wetsuits were not only being used for surfing but for waterskiing, windsurfing, diving, and even snow skin. As a result O’Neill opened up other stores in Washington, Oregon, and outside the U.S. in Canada. With a growing demand for his products, O’Neill realized that his small manufacturing operations in his garage were no longer adequate and was also becoming more work than he could handle himself. O’Neill found a lager facility in a building on 41st Street in San Francisco, and also found the additional help needed by turning to his six children. Each of his children soon found themselves helping with different aspects of business. Son Mike worked on wetsuit designs, while son Shawn handled product testing and working with each department, and son Tim organized external customer product testing and handling promotional work with son Pat who also organized the first O’Neill surf team. O’Neill’s daughter Kathy organized and modernized they operations by computerizing everything, and daughter Bridget successfully diversified their offerings to include beach sports wear. The brand soon became an icon within the surf industry and O’Neill began to sponsor and organize surf competitions around the globe. After almost thirty years of successful operations, Jack’s son Pat took the reigns and became the CEO having run team O’Neill and handling the majority of the company’s international operations. With Pat at the helm of the company’s operations Jack was able to share his love and passion for the ocean and marine biology with the next generation, creating the O’Neill Sea Odyssey program. This free program offered to under privileged fourth to fifth grade students aims to teach them about the importance of the ocean and its relationship to the environment. The program is located in Santa Cruz, California in the Santa Cruz Harbor and is taught aboard Team O’Neill’s sixty-five foot catamaran, focusing on teaching students about ecology, marine biology, and navigation. The Sea Odyssey program offers extensive information about these areas. Many of the classes who participate in the program use and incorporate the courses information into their curriculum before and after attending the three-hour program by accessing the information it teaches on its website. A recent estimate of the number of students who have participated and passed the program estimates it at 60,000. The program has even received recognition by the California Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award in Children’s Environmental Education (December 2004). The program was also awarded with US Senator Barbara Boxer’s statewide Environmental Champion award (May 2005).

To design a sub-brand to that embodies the O’Neill philosophy for a line of SPF protection skin care products that use natural and organic ingredients and mild fragrances that captures the essence of surf and snow. Packaging will reinforce and communicate the brands environmentally conscious mindset using recyclable and sustainable materials with products that are not tested on animals. Skin care line will include, moisturizer, sunblock, water resistant sunblock, lip balm, facial cleanser, sun soother, and microdermabrasion facial/body scrub.

Alfresco Aficionados (Outdoor and Beach Lifestyles) Demographic Segmentation Age & Lifecycle Segmentation – young teens to adults (13-45) of Generation X and Generation Y who enjoy surfing and or a beach lifestyle, and adults (55-65) of the Baby Boomer generation that have continued to live an active lifestyle with a passion for outdoor activities and nature. They purchase products and clothing not only based on their fashion and appearance, performance and price, but also for their ability to function and endure their active and often rugged lifestyle of outdoor living. They enjoy sports and outdoor activities that allow them to directly interact with the natural elements, and as a result they have a great appreciation for the nature and the playground and picturesque setting it provides for hanging out. Income Segmentation – teens to young adults in this segment have a moderate to sometimes high level of disposable income, which is provided by their parents or obtained through part to full time jobs they work at while attending school. They typically will have or go onto obtain a high school degree and a college degree, with some earing multiple degrees. Adults within these segment posses broad range of income levels ranging from lower middle class to upper middle and sometimes upper class. These individuals work in a variety of fields that include everything from engineers to artists, with many of them working in fields related to the environment or those which require them to work outdoors. They typically posses a high school degree and college degree (sometimes multiple degrees) but often work in fields unrelated to their degrees. Some adults within this demographic however only have a high school education, but have gone onto establish successful careers in fields related to their passion for nature and outdoor activities, where they can work outside or in areas where they can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors that they love and is responsible for shaping their identity and self image.
